Effect of short-term nutritional supplementation of green microalgae on some reproductive indicators of Anglo-Nubian crossbred goats

Background and Aim

Despite the wide spectrum of uses, one of the chief drawbacks to expanding microalgae as a food supplement in livestock is the lack of a regimen protocol with established dosage and time length of supplementation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of short-term supplementation with increasing doses of microalgae on ovarian response in goats reared in northeast Brazil.

Materials and Methods

Twenty-eight goats had their follicular waves synchronized using three injections of a prostaglandin analog at 7-day intervals. Goats were allocated to groups that received daily oral Chlorella supplementation for 7 days, respectively: 5 g, GMA5 group (n = 7), 10 g (GMA10; n = 7), and 20 g (GMA20; n = 7). The control group (GMA 0; n = 7) received a drench of water.

Results

The groups showed a quadratic increase (p = 0.0156) in kidney fat thickness but there was a significant reduction in dry matter intake in the GMA20 group. The GMA20 group showed higher glucose levels and glutathione peroxidase (p < 0.05). There was a decrease in plasma cholesterol (p < 0.05) in the 10 and 20 g treatments. The number of total follicles increased quadratically. Follicles <3 mm increased linearly (p = 0.0113) for microalgal supply. The GMA10 and GMA20 groups had the highest values (p < 0.05) among the treatments. After inducing ovulation, there was a significant increase in follicles >3 mm in the GMA10 group, which also showed a greater (p < 0.05) area of intraovarian blood perfusion and pulsatility index of the ovarian artery.

Conclusion

We conclude that for 7 days of supplementation, the administration of 10 g of microalgae appears to be the most efficient dosage for stimulating the ovarian response in tropical goats.

Changes in ovarian reserve and ovarian blood flow in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome following laparoscopic ovarian drilling

This prospective cohort study was conducted on 80 patients with clomiphene citrate (CC)-resistant polycystic ovary syndrome undergoing laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD). Pre- and post-LOD ovarian reserve parameters (anti-Mullerian hormone: AMH, ovarian volume: OV, and antral follicle count: AFC) and ovarian stromal blood flow indices (Vascularization index: VI, flow index: FI, and vascularization flow index: VFI) were measured to explore the effect of LOD and to find out the correlation between serum AMH and different clinical, hormonal, and ultrasonic variables. There was a highly significant reduction of the serum AMH (p < .001) after LOD with significant reduction in OV, AFC and vascular indices (VI, FI and VFI) of the right and left ovaries (p < .05). LOD significantly reduced ovarian reserve parameters (AMH, OV and AFC) and ovarian stromal blood flow indices (VI, FI and VFI) with no observed correlation between AMH levels and Doppler indices.

Effect of antitubercular treatment on ovarian function in female genital tuberculosis with infertility

AIM:

To evaluate the effect of antitubercular therapy (ATT) on an ovarian function such as ovarian reserve, ovarian dimensions, and ovarian stromal blood flow.

SETTINGS AND DESIGN:

Prospective study design.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Fifty infertile women with female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) without tubo-ovarian masses diagnosed by positive acid-fast bacilli culture or epithelioid granuloma on endometrial aspirate or positive polymerase chain reaction with positive findings on laparoscopy or hysteroscopy were recruited. The ovarian function tests were performed on day 2/3 as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels. Ovarian dimensions (length, width, and depth) were measured using a transvaginal ultrasound. Mean antral follicle count (AFC) and ovarian stromal blood flow (peak systolic velocity [PSV], pulsatility index (PI), and resistive index [RI]) were measured using a transvaginal ultrasound. All women were started on ATT for 6 months by directly observed treatment strategy. After completion of ATT, all the parameters were repeated.

RESULTS:

There was a significant increase in AMH (2.68 ± 0.97 ng/ml to 2.8 ± 1.03 ng/ml) pre- to post-ATT, nonsignificant increase in FSH (7.16 ± 2.34 mIU/ml to 7.26 ± 2.33 mIU/ml) post-ATT, significant increase in mean AFC (7.40 ± 2.12–8.14 ± 2.17), PSV in the right ovary (6.015–6.11 cm/s) and left ovary (6.05–6.08 cm/s), PI in the right ovary (0.935–0.951 cm/s) and left ovary (0.936–0.957 cm/s), and RI in the right ovary (0.62 ± 0.01–0.79 ± 0.02) and left ovary (0.65 ± 0.02–0.84 ± 0.01) with ATT. There was no significant change in mean ovarian dimensions (ovarian length, breadth, and width) and summed ovarian volume with ATT. On laparoscopy, tubercles were seen in 27 (54%) women. Caseous nodules and encysted ascites were seen in 8% cases each.

CONCLUSION:

ATT improves the ovarian function (AMH and AFC) and ovarian blood flow in women with FGTB.

The role of alpha adrenoceptors in the vascular and estradiol secretory responses to stimulation of the superior ovarian nerve

Electrical stimulation of the superior ovarian nerve in rats reduces both the plasma flow rate of ovarian venous blood (ovarian blood flow) and the ovarian estradiol secretion rate. Here, we examined the possible roles of alpha-adrenoceptors in these processes. The reduction of the plasma flow rate was blocked by an alpha 1- (prazosin), but not by an alpha 2- (yohimbine) adrenoceptor blocker. In contrast, the reduction of the estradiol secretion rate was blocked by yohimbine but not by prazosin. We conclude that ovarian vascular and estradiol secretory responses to superior ovarian nerve activation are mediated by alpha 1- and alpha 2-adrenoceptors, respectively.
