Exploring the Potential of Heteroatom-Doped Graphene Nanoribbons as a Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction

In this study, we created a series of N, S, and P-doped and co-doped carbon catalysts using a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) matrix and thoroughly evaluated the impact of doping on ORR activity and selectivity in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. The results obtained showed no significant changes in the GNR structure after the doping process, though changes were observed in the surface chemistry in view of the heteroatom insertion and oxygen depletion. Of all the dopants investigated, nitrogen (mainly in the form of pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N) was the most easily inserted and detected in the carbon matrix. The electrochemical analyses conducted showed that doping impacted the performance of the catalyst in ORR through changes in the chemical composition of the catalyst, as well as in the double-layer capacitance and electrochemically accessible surface area. In terms of selectivity, GNR doped with phosphorus and sulfur favored the 2e- ORR pathway, while nitrogen favored the 4e- ORR pathway. These findings can provide useful insights into the design of more efficient and versatile catalytic materials for ORR in different electrolyte solutions, based on functionalized carbon.

Carbonized Nickel Complex of Sodium Pectate as Catalyst for Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Sodium pectate derivatives with 25% replacement of sodium ions with nickel ions were obtained by carbonization to temperatures of 280, 550, and 800 °C, under special protocols in an inert atmosphere by carbonization to temperatures of 280, 550, and 800 °C. The 25% substitution is the upper limit of substitution of sodium for nickel ions, above which the complexes are no longer soluble in water. It was established that the sample carburized to 550 °C is the most effective active element in the hydrogen-oxidation reaction, while the sample carbonized up to 800 °C was the most effective in the oxygen-reduction reaction. The poor performance of the catalytic system involving the pectin coordination biopolymer carbonized up to 280 °C was due to loss of proton conductivity caused by water removal and mainly by two-electron transfer in one catalytic cycle of the oxygen-reduction reaction. The improved performance of the system with coordination biopolymer carbonized up to 550 °C was due to the better access of gases to the catalytic sites and four-electron transfer in one catalytic cycle. The (Ni-NaPG)_800C sample contains metallic nickel nanoparticles and loose carbon, which enhances the electrical conductivity and gas capacity of the catalytic system. In addition, almost four-electron transfer is observed in one catalytic cycle of the oxygen-reduction reaction.

Conducting Redox Polymer as a Robust Organic Electrode-Active Material in Acidic Aqueous Electrolyte towards Polymer-Air Secondary Batteries

Organic materials receive increasing attention as environmentally benign and sustainable electrode-active materials. We present a conducting redox polymer (CRP) based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) with naphthoquinone pendant group, which is formed from a stable suspension of a trimeric precursor and an oxoammonium cation as oxidant. This suspension allows us to easily coat the polymer onto a current collector, opening up use of roll-to-roll processing or ink-jet printing for electrode preparation. The CRP showed a full capacity of 76 mAh g^-1 even at a high C rate of 100 C in acidic aqueous electrolyte. These properties make the CRP a promising candidate as anode-active material; a polymer-air secondary battery was fabricated with the CRP as anode, a conventional Pt/C catalyst as cathode, and sulfuric acid aqueous solution as electrolyte. This battery yielded a discharge voltage of 0.50 V and showed good cycling stability with 97 % capacity retention after 100 cycles and high rate capabilities up to 20 C.

Segmentation and Re-encapsulation of Porous PtCu Nanoparticles by Generated Carbon Shell for Enhanced Ethylene Glycol Oxidation and Oxygen-Reduction Reaction

Hierarchical porous carbon-encapsulated ultrasmall PtCu (UsPtCu@C) nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed based on segmentation and re-encapsulation of porous PtCu NPs by using glucose as a green biomass carbon source. The synergistic electronic effect from the bimetallic elements can enhance the catalytic activity by adjusting the surface electronic structure of Pt. Most importantly, the generated porous carbon shell provided a large contact surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and structural stability, and the ultrasmall PtCu NPs exhibited an increased electrochemical performance compared with their PtCu matrix because of the exposure of more catalytically active centers. This synergistic relationship between the components resulted in enhanced catalytic activity and better stability of the obtained UsPtCu@C for ethylene glycol oxidation reaction and the oxygen-reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte, which was higher than the PtCu NPs and commercial Pt/C (20 wt % Pt on Vulcan XC-72). The electrochemically active surface areas of the UsPtCu@C, PtCu NPs, and commercial Pt/C were calculated to be approximately 230.2, 32.8, and 64.0 m²/g_Pt, respectively; the mass activity of the UsPtCu@C for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction was 8.5 A/mg_Pt, which was 14.2 and 8.5 times that of PtCu NPs and commercial Pt/C, respectively. The specific activity of UsPtCu@C was 3.7 mA/cm_pt², which was 2.1 and 2.3 times that of PtCu NPs and commercial Pt/C, respectively. The onset potential (E_on-set) of UsPtCu@C for the oxygen-reduction reaction was 0.96 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), which was 110 and 60 mV higher than PtCu and commercial Pt/C, respectively. The half-wave potentials (E_1/2) of UsPtCu@C, PtCu, and Pt/C were 0.88, 0.56, and 0.82 V (vs RHE), respectively, which indicated that the UsPtCu@C catalyst had an excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity.

2D Porous Carbons prepared from Layered Organic-Inorganic Hybrids and their Use as Oxygen-Reduction Electrocatalysts

2D porous carbon nanomaterials have attracted tremendous attention in different disciplines especially for electrochemical catalysis. The significant advantage of such 2D materials is that nearly all their surfaces are exposed to the electrolyte and can take part in the electrochemical reaction. Here, a versatile active-salt-templating strategy to efficiently synthesize 2D porous carbon nanosheets from layered organic-inorganic hybrids is presented. The resulting heteroatom-doped carbon nanosheets (NFe/CNs) exhibit exceptional performance for the oxygen-reduction reaction and in Zn-air battery electrodes. The activity of the best catalyst within a series of NFe/CNs exceeds the performance of conventional carbon-supported Pt catalysts in terms of onset potential (0.930 vs 0.915 V of Pt/C), half-wave potential (0.859 vs 0.816 V of Pt/C), long-time stability, and methanol tolerance. Also, when applied as a cathode catalyst in a zinc-air battery the NFe/CNs presented here outperform commercial Pt/C catalysts.

In Situ Polymer Graphenization Ingrained with Nanoporosity in a Nitrogenous Electrocatalyst Boosting the Performance of Polymer-Electrolyte-Membrane Fuel Cells

Rich, porous graphene frameworks decorated with uniformly dispersed active sites are prepared by using polyaniline as a graphene precursor and introducing phenanthroline as a pore-forming agent. The unprecedented fuel-cell performance of this electrocatalyst is linked to the graphene frameworks with vast distribution of pore sizes, which maximizes the active-sites accessibility, facilitates mass-transport properties, and improves the carbon corrosion resistance.

Atomic H-Induced Mo2C Hybrid as an Active and Stable Bifunctional Electrocatalyst

Mo₂C nanocrystals (NCs) anchored on vertically aligned graphene nanoribbons (VA-GNR) as hybrid nanoelectrocatalysts (Mo₂C-GNR) are synthesized through the direct carbonization of metallic Mo with atomic H treatment. The growth mechanism of Mo₂C NCs with atomic H treatment is discussed. The Mo₂C-GNR hybrid exhibits highly active and durable electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR). For HER, in an acidic solution the Mo₂C-GNR has an onset potential of 39 mV and a Tafel slope of 65 mV dec^-1, and in a basic solution Mo₂C-GNR has an onset potential of 53 mV, and Tafel slope of 54 mV dec^-1. It is stable in both acidic and basic media. Mo₂C-GNR is a high-activity ORR catalyst with a high peak current density of 2.01 mA cm^-2, an onset potential of 0.93 V that is more positive vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), a high electron transfer number n (∼3.90), and long-term stability.

Networking Pyrolyzed Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks by Carbon Nanotubes Improves Conductivity and Enhances Oxygen-Reduction Performance in Polymer-Electrolyte-Membrane Fuel Cells

A high-performance nonprecious-metal oxygen-reduction electrocatalyst is prepared via in situ growth of bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) followed by adsorption of furfuryl alcohol and pyrolysis. The networking boosts the conductivity and performance in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, yielding a maximal power density of 820 mW cm^-2 .

Ordered PdCu-Based Nanoparticles as Bifunctional Oxygen-Reduction and Ethanol-Oxidation Electrocatalysts

The development of superior non-platinum electrocatalysts for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability for the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) and liquid fuel oxidation reaction is very important for the commercialization of fuel cells, but still a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a new colloidal chemistry technique for making structurally ordered PdCu-based nanoparticles (NPs) with composition control from PdCu to PdCuNi and PtCuCo. Under the dual tuning on the composition and intermetallic phase, the ordered PdCuCo NPs exhibit better activity and much enhanced stability for ORR and ethanol-oxidation reaction (EOR) than those of disordered PdCuM NPs, the commercial Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the improved ORR activity on the PdCuM NPs stems from the catalytically active hollow sites arising from the ligand effect and the compressive strain on the Pd surface owing to the smaller atomic size of Cu, Co, and Ni.
