Do peer-based short-form educational videos created by nursing students improve youths' knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases? A quasi-experimental study

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remains high worldwide in today's society, especially among young people. Youth education on STDs could help to reduce the prevalence of the condition in society and prevent new cases.

AIM

The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of peer-based short-form educational videos on youths' knowledge of STDs.

METHODS

This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Turkey. The sample consisted of 121 students divided into experimental and control groups. Pre- and post-test control group quasi-experimental research design was employed in this study during the spring semester of the academic year 2021-2022. Peer-based short-form educational videos created by nursing students were used as an intervention. The survey form and Sexually Transmitted Disease Knowledge Questionnaire were used to collect data.

RESULTS

Participants with parental responsibilities and had previous STD experience had higher knowledge score than the other subgroups. There was a significant main effect of peer-based short-form educational video on participants overall knowledge score of STDs. Additionally, the effect of intervention continued at 12-week follow-up measurement.

CONCLUSION

Peer-based short-form educational videos increase young people's knowledge of STD, and the impact of the intervention continued at 12-week follow up.

Peer mentorship as an adjunct intervention for the treatment of eating disorders: A pilot randomized trial

OBJECTIVE

Peer mentorship has been shown to be helpful for other mental health conditions, but it has been understudied for patients with eating disorders. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of peer mentorship for individuals with eating disorders by conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT).

TRIAL DESIGN

Parallel three-arm pilot RCT with 1:1:1 allocation to peer mentorship, social support mentorship (active comparison intervention), and waiting list.

METHOD

Sixty outpatients with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge-eating disorder (BED) were randomly assigned to a condition. Outcome measures, including eating disorder symptoms and general psychopathology, were completed at baseline, mid-, and postintervention.

RESULTS

Session attendance and acceptability ratings were higher in peer mentorship than social support mentorship. More participants in social support mentorship (39%) dropped out compared to peer mentorship (5%). In intent-to-treat analysis, peer mentorship showed greater reductions in body dissatisfaction and anxiety compared with both control groups. Compared with social support mentorship, peer mentorship had greater reductions in depression. Compared with waiting list, peer mentorship had greater reduction in binge eating days/week in patients with BN/BED and restriction days/week in patients with AN. Peer mentorship did not impact body mass index or reentry into higher level of care.

DISCUSSION

This pilot RCT provides preliminary evidence that peer mentorship is effective for some cognitive and behavioral symptoms of eating disorders as an adjunct to outpatient treatment. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of peer mentorship in absence of treatment.

The Michigan Peer-to-Peer Depression Awareness Program: School-Based Prevention to Address Depression Among Teens

OBJECTIVE

The Peer-to-Peer Depression Awareness Program (P2P) is a school-based program that aims to decrease mental illness and promote well-being among students by empowering high school students as both learners and educators. Specific goals include improving the school climate around mental health, directing students to resources, and encouraging help-seeking behavior.

METHODS

In the 2015-2016 academic year, 121 students across 10 high schools organized into teams and were trained to develop and implement peer-to-peer depression awareness campaigns. Outcomes were assessed via pre- and posttest questionnaires.

RESULTS

A total of 878 students completed questionnaires. Outcomes demonstrated improved knowledge and attitudes toward depression, increased confidence in identifying and referring peers with depression, improved help-seeking intentions, and reduced stigma.

CONCLUSIONS

The P2P program increased depression literacy through the use of youth-designed and youth-implemented depression awareness and outreach activities, which may ultimately result in earlier detection of depression and in fewer depression sequelae.

Compulsory drug detention exposure is associated with not receiving antiretroviral treatment among people who inject drugs in Bangkok, Thailand: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Thailand has experienced a longstanding epidemic of HIV among people who inject drugs (PWID). However, antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage among HIV-positive PWID has historically remained low. While ongoing drug law enforcement involving periodic police crackdowns is known to increase the risk of HIV transmission among Thai PWID, the impact of such drug policy approaches on the ART uptake has been understudied. Therefore, we sought to identify factors associated with not receiving ART among HIV-positive PWID in Bangkok, Thailand, with a focus on factors pertaining to drug law enforcement.

METHODS

Data were collected from a community-recruited sample of HIV-positive PWID in Bangkok who participated in the Mitsampan Community Research Project between June 2009 and October 2011. We identified factors associated with not receiving ART at the time of interview using multivariate logistic regression.

RESULTS

In total, 128 HIV-positive PWID participated in this study, with 58 (45.3%) reporting not receiving ART at the time of interview. In multivariate analyses, completing less than secondary education (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 3.32 ; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.48 - 7.45), daily midazolam injection (AOR: 3.22, 95% CI: 1.45 - 7.15) and exposure to compulsory drug detention (AOR: 3.36, 95% CI: 1.01 - 11.21) were independently and positively associated with not receiving ART. Accessing peer-based healthcare information or support services was independently and positively associated with receiving ART (AOR: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.05 - 0.84).

CONCLUSIONS

Approximately half of our study group of HIV-positive PWID reported not receiving ART at the time of interview. Daily midazolam injectors, those with lower education attainment, and individuals who had been in compulsory drug detention were more likely to be non-recipients of ART whereas those who accessed peer-based healthcare-related services were more likely to receive ART. These findings suggest a potentially adverse impact of compulsory drug detention and highlight the need to expand interventions to facilitate access to ART among HIV-positive PWID in this setting.

Can a peer-based intervention impact adherence to the treatment of latent tuberculous infection?

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effectiveness of a peer-based intervention on adherence to and completion of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) treatment.

METHODS

Patients prescribed self-administered LTBI treatment were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of an experimental, peer-based adherence support intervention. Primary outcomes were treatment adherence and completion. Adherence was assessed through self-report, electronic monitoring devices and clinic visits.

RESULTS

Of 250 participants, 70% were male; 71% were Black and 20% Latino; the mean age was 40 years; 67% were foreign-born and 39% were married. No significant baseline differences were noted between the intervention groups. Treatment completion was 61% in the intervention group compared to 57% in the controls (P = 0.482). The corresponding completion rate for other clinic patients was 44%. Foreign birth, marriage and history of mental illness were associated with non-completion of treatment after controlling for the intervention group; increased completion rates were found among foreign-born married persons and older participants. A substantial difference in adherence rates was observed between the intervention groups. Adherence among non-completers decreased early, while adherence among completers remained constant.

CONCLUSIONS

The peer-based intervention was not significantly associated with LTBI treatment completion, but was associated with greater adherence. Findings suggest the importance of interventions to support adherence that target early non-adherence with LTBI treatment, particularly in the first 2 months, when there is a substantial risk of default.
