Intercropping of Euonymus japonicus with Photinia × fraseri Improves Phytoremediation Efficiency in Cd/Cu/Zn Contaminated Field

Intercropping plants for phytoremediation is a promising strategy in heavy metal-polluted soils. In this study, two typical greening plant species, Euonymus japonicus (E. japonicus) and Photinia × fraseri (P. × fraseri), were intercropped in a Cd/Cu/Zn-contaminated field. The phytoremediation efficiency was investigated by measuring the plant biomass, metal concentration, and mycorrhizal colonisation, as well as the effects on soil properties, including soil pH; soil total N; and available N, P, K, Cd, Cu, and Zn. The results showed that, compared with the monoculture system, intercropping significantly lowered the available Cd, Cu, and Zn contents, significantly improved the total and available N contents in rhizosphere soils of both plant species, and increased the hyphae colonisation rate of P. × fraseri. In both plants, intercropping significantly improved the total plant biomass. Furthermore, the concentrations Zn and Cd in the root of E. japonicus and Cu concentration in the root of P. × fraseri were enhanced by 58.16%, 107.74%, and 20.57%, respectively. Intercropping resulted in plants accumulating higher amounts of Cd, Cu, and Zn. This was particularly evident in the total amount of Cd in E. japonicus, which was 2.2 times greater than that in the monoculture system. Therefore, this study provides a feasible technique for improving phytoremediation efficiency using greening plants.

Phytostabilization of Pb-Zn Mine Tailings with Amorpha fruticosa Aided by Organic Amendments and Triple Superphosphate

A greenhouse pot trial was conducted to investigate the effect of organic amendments combined with triple superphosphate on the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs), Amorpha fruticosa growth and metal uptake from Pb-Zn mine tailings. Cattle manure compost (CMC), spent mushroom compost (SMC) and agricultural field soil (AFS) were applied to tailings at 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% w/w ratio, whereas sewage sludge (SS) and wood biochar (WB) were mixed at 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20% w/w ratio. Triple superphosphate (TSP) was added to all the treatments at 4:1 (molar ratio). Amendments efficiently decreased DTPA-extracted Pb, Zn, Cd and Cu in treatments. Chlorophyll contents and shoot and root dry biomass significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the treatments of CMC (except T4 for chlorophyll b) and SMC, whereas treatments of SS (except T1 for chlorophyll a and b), WB and AFS (except T4 for chlorophyll a and b) did not show positive effects as compared to CK1. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) values in plant tissues were below 1 for most treatments. In amended treatments, soluble protein content increased, phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) decreased, and catalase (CAT) activity showed varied results as compared to CK1 and CK2. Results suggested that A. fruticosa can be a potential metal phytostabilizer and use of CMC or SMC in combination with TSP are more effective than other combinations for the in situ stabilization of Pb-Zn mine tailings.

Use of bacterial acc deaminase to increase oil (especially poly aromatic hydrocarbons) phytoremediation efficiency for maize (zea mays) seedlings

Oil presence in soil, as a stressor, reduces phytoremediation efficiency through an increase in the plant stress ethylene. Bacterial 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase, as a plant stress ethylene reducer, was employed to increase oil phytoremediation efficiency. For this purpose, the ability of ACC deaminase-producing Pseudomonas strains to grow in oil-polluted culture media and withstand various concentrations of oil and also their ability to reduce plant stress ethylene and enhance some growth characteristics of maize and finally their effects on increasing phytoremediation efficiency of poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil were investigated. Based on the results, of tested strains just P9 and P12 were able to perform oil degradation. Increasing oil concentration from 0 to 10% augmented these two strains population, 15.7% and 12.9%, respectively. The maximum increase in maize growth was observed in presence of P12 strain. Results of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that PAHs phytoremediation efficiency was higher for inoculated seeds than uninoculated. The highest plant growth and PAHs removal percentage (74.9%) from oil-polluted soil was observed in maize inoculated with P12. These results indicate the significance of ACC deaminase producing bacteria in alleviation of plant stress ethylene in oil-polluted soils and increasing phytoremediation efficiency of such soils.

Salicylic acid nanoparticles (SANPs) improve growth and phytoremediation efficiency of Isatis cappadocica Desv., under As stress

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid dispersed in the environment and it cause serious toxicity to plants. Salicylic acid (SA) plays an important role in many plant growth processes involved in plant defence against heavy metal or metalloid stress. In the present study, for the first time, chitosan nanoparticles was synthesised, loaded by SA and the positive role of SA on growth and phytoremediation efficiency of Isatis cappadocica against As toxicity were evaluated. The highest arsenate treatment (1200 µM) caused a decrease in plant biomass that, however, its combined application with salicylic acid nanoparticles (SANPs) substantially increase in shoot height, root length and their biomass production compared with As stressed plants. The pretreatment of SANPs by increasing arsenate supply, simultaneously increased the As concentration in roots and shoots of I. cappadocica which reached a maximum of 705 and 1188 mg/kg, respectively. This results suggest that high levels of As stress induce stress status in I. cappadocica which SANPs pretreatment application limit these toxic effects of As. Therefore, SANPs has a significant beneficial effect on the growth and phytoremediation efficiency of I. cappadocica subjected to As stress.
