Novel Dual-Excitation and Dual-Emission Materials: Eu2+,Pb2+ Co-doped Core-Shell-Structured CaS@CaZnOS Phosphors and Their Application for Highly Efficient Photosynthesis of Plants

Eu²⁺,Pb²⁺-doped core-shell-structured CaS@CaZnOS phosphors were synthesized by a two-step high-temperature solid-phase method. The as-synthesized CaS:Eu²⁺,Pb²⁺@CaZnOS:Pb²⁺ phosphors possess excellent dual-excitation and dual-emission (DE²) luminescent properties, which give rise to red emission peaking at 650 nm under green excitation, derived from the core CaS:Eu²⁺,Pb²⁺, and blue emission peaking at 424 nm, originating from the shell CaZnOS:Pb²⁺, under ultraviolet (UV) excitation. In addition, tunable red/blue emission can be achieved by changing the doping concentration of Pb²⁺ in the CaZnOS shell. The red/blue dual emission of core-shell DE² phosphors under excitation of UV and green light significantly matches with the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll (a, b); hence, the as-prepared phosphors are excellent solar spectral conversion (SSC) auxiliaries of plastic films or laminated glass for greenhouses and provide ideas for creating more efficient and practically valuable SSC auxiliaries. The DE² properties are described, and the energy transfer mechanism from Pb²⁺ to Eu²⁺ in the core is proposed and discussed in detail.

Growth-Controllable Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on Surface-Attached Metal-Organic Framework Layer on Living Leaf

Plant nanoelectronics aims to achieve specific functions by selecting suitable nanomaterials to connect or implant into plants. In this work, a new cyclic-spraying method is developed to attain controllable growth of surface-attached metal-organic framework (SURMOF) coatings on various complex substrates, including cotton, silk, and plant leaves. The covalent bonds formed between the SURMOF layer and substrate enable them to connect firmly without additional adhesive and do not fall off from the microstructured substrate surface with the change of biological activity or environment. Noteworthily, the triboelectric polarity of SURMOF can be regulated by changing the ligand molecule. As a proof of concept, a growth-controllable triboelectric nanogenerator (GC-TENG) based on living leaves and coated SURMOF layer is developed, and the feasibility of using it in the self-driven agricultural monitoring system is explored. In addition, long-term monitoring results show that the growth of SURMOF coating will not cause damage to plant leaf tissue, nor will it affect plant photosynthesis.

Morphology, Photosynthetic Traits, and Nutritional Quality of Lettuce Plants as Affected by Green Light Substituting Proportion of Blue and Red Light

Green light, as part of the photosynthetically active radiation, has been proven to have high photosynthetic efficiency once absorbed by plant leaves and can regulate plant physiological activities. However, few studies have investigated the appropriate and efficient way of using the green light for plant production. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate a moderate amount of green light, partially replacing red and blue light, for plant growth and development. In this experiment, four treatments were set up by adjusting the relative amount of green light as 0 (RB), 30 (G30), 60 (G60), and 90 (G90) μmol m^-2 s^-1, respectively, with a total photosynthetic photon flux density of 200 μmol m^-2 s^-1 and a fixed red-to-blue ratio of 4:1. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv. 'Tiberius') plant growth and morphology, stomatal characteristics, light absorptance and transmittance, photosynthetic characteristics, and nutritional quality were investigated. The results showed that: (1) shoot dry weight increased by 16.3 and 24.5% and leaf area increased by 11.9 and 16.2% under G30 and G60, respectively, compared with those under RB. Plant stem length increased linearly with increasing green-to-blue light ratio; (2) light transmittance of lettuce leaf under treatments employing green light was higher than that under RB, especially in the green region; (3) stomatal density increased, whereas stomatal aperture area decreased with the increase in the relative amount of green light; and (4) carbohydrate accumulation increased under G60 and G90. Soluble sugar contents under G60 and G90 increased by 39.4 and 19.4%, respectively. Nitrate contents under G30, G60, and G90 decreased by 26.2, 40.3, and 43.4%, respectively. The above results indicated that 15-30% green light replacing red and blue light effectively increased the yield and nutritional quality of lettuce plants.

[Investigation on effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration on plant-soil system carbon cycling: Based on stable isotopic technique]

Elevated atmospheric CO₂ affects plant photosynthesis process and biomass accumulation, furthermore alters the distribution of photosynthetic carbon (C) above- and below-ground. The formation and turnover of soil organic carbon (SOC) depends on the input of photosynthetic C, so the change of plant physiology and metabolism caused by increasing CO₂ concentration will further affect the balance of SOC pool. Therefore, stable isotope ¹³C technique is powerful for clarifying the influence of elevated atmospheric CO₂ on C cycling in plant-soil system, including the distribution of photosynthetic C among plant organs, and the transformation and accumulation of photosynthetic C in soil. This review summarized research focused on the effects of elevated atmospheric CO₂ on C cycling in terrestrial ecosystems based on ¹³C natural abundance or ¹³C tracing technique, including: 1) isotopic fractionation effect in plant photosynthesis; 2) the distribution of photosynthetic C in plant organs; 3) the transformation and stabilization of photosynthetic C in SOC driven by microbial process. Clarifying the above processes and controlling mechanisms is essential to predict long-term influence of elevated CO₂ on C cycling and evaluate the source-sink function of SOC in terrestrial ecosystems.
