Comparison of bubble removal performances of five membrane oxygenators with and without a pre-filter

When employing minimal invasive extracorporeal circulation (MiECC), the removal of bubbles in the circuit is important to prevent air embolism. We investigated the bubble removal performance of the FHP oxygenator with a pre-filter and compared it with that of four oxygenators, including the Fusion oxygenator, Quadrox oxygenator, Inspire oxygenator, and FX oxygenator. A closed test circuit filled with an aqueous glycerin solution was used. Air injection (10 mL) was performed prior to the oxygenator, and the number and volume of the bubbles were measured at the inlet and outlet of each oxygenator. At the inlet of the five oxygenators, there were no significant differences in the total number of bubbles detected. At the outlet, bubbles were classified into two groups according to the bubble size: ≥100 μm and <100 μm. Tests were performed at pump flow rates of 4 and 5 L/min. For bubbles ≥100 μm, which are considered clinically detrimental, the FHP was the lowest number and volume of bubbles at both pump flow rates compared to the other oxygenators. Regarding the bubbles <100 μm, the number of bubbles was higher in the FHP than those in others; however, the volume of bubbles was significantly lower at 4 L/min and tended to be lower at 5 L/min. The use of the FHP with the pre-filter removed more bubbles ≥100 μm in the circuit than that by the other oxygenators.

Pre-filtration followed by slow double-layered filtration: Media clogging effects on hydraulic aspects and water quality

This study evaluated clogging effects on head loss and water quality in sand prefiltration columns, followed by innovative double-layered slow-filter filtration technology using anthracite coal and sand. The study was divided into two phases. Phase 1 (filtration rate 11 m³ /m² ·d) had a layout of a pre-filter (PF) system followed by a slow filter (SF). In Phase 2 (filtration rates of 5.5 and 11 m³ /m² ·d), two PF systems (PF1 and PF2) followed by SFs (SF1 and SF2) were monitored, be differed only by filtration rate. Phase 1 presents a mean turbidity removal of 45.6% in PF and 23.9% in SF. PF presented a lower head loss in the superficial layers of the filter media, whereas SF presented a more important contribution in the deeper layers of the bed. In Phase 2, the mean results obtained for turbidity removal in PF1 and SF1 were 84.7% and 22.4%, in that order. PF2 and SF2 promoted mean reductions of 84.5% and 22.0%, respectively. Greater clogging is observed in the PF's surface layers, whereas the SFs dissipate greater clogging with depth. Filtration rates and water quality were similar in filter media of different compositions. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Double-layer filters show better use of the porous media in depth. Different materials produce different forms of clogging. Higher filtration rates increase the number of pre-filter and slow filter runs.

Improvement of Polytetrafluoroethylene Membrane High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filter Performance with Melt-Blown Media

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filters are widely used in low-load application areas, such as industrial cleanrooms, due to their low initial pressure drop. In this study, melt-blown (MB) nonwoven was introduced as a pre-filtration layer at the front end of a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to improve the filter performance of the PTFE membrane. Pre-filtration reduces the average particle size, which reaches the PTFE membrane and reduces the dust load on the HEPA filters. A comparative analysis of the HEPA filters by composite MB and PTFE was conducted. Regarding the MB composite on the PTFE, low-weight and high-weight MB composites were effective in increasing dust filtration efficiency, and the dust loading capacity of the PTFE composite with high-weight MB increased by approximately three times that of the PTFE membrane. In addition, the filter was installed on an external air conditioner in an actual use environment and showed a high efficiency of 99.984% without a change in differential pressure after 120 days.
