Craniofacial and dental characteristics of three Japanese individuals with genetically diagnosed SATB2-associated syndrome

Craniofacial defects are one of the most frequent phenotypes in syndromic diseases. More than 30% of syndromic diseases are associated with craniofacial defects, which are important for the precise diagnosis of systemic diseases. Special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2 (SATB2)-associated syndrome (SAS) is a rare syndromic disease associated with a wide variety of phenotypes, including intellectual disability and craniofacial defects. Among them, dental anomalies are the most frequently observed phenotype and thus becomes an important diagnostic criterion for SAS. In this report, we demonstrate three Japanese cases of genetically diagnosed SAS with detailed craniofacial phenotypes. The cases showed multiple dental problems, which have been previously reported to be linked to SAS, including abnormal crown morphologies and pulp stones. One case showed a characteristic enamel pearl at the root furcation. These phenotypes add new insights for differentiating SAS from other disorders.

Bilateral talon cusp in permanent maxillary lateral incisors: A case report, clinico-pathological review and proposal of an integrated classification

Talon cusp (TC) is an uncommon developmental anomaly resulting from the invagination of inner enamel epithelium cells. It is primarily seen in people of Asian descent. Maxillary lateral incisors are the teeth most commonly affected by this dental malformation. Early detection and management are pertinent to prevent complications that may be associated with the TC. We describe the successful diagnosis and management of a rare case of nonsyndromic bilateral TC in permanent maxillary lateral incisors with conservative therapy. Further, while discussing the case, we present a brief clinicopathological review on TC and also propose an "integrated classification of talon cusp (ICTC) to describe the morphological aspects as well as indicate the severity and difficulty in the management of cases. An early specific diagnosis along with multidisciplinary treatment approach is recommended for TC, especially to avoid pulpal complications in teeth.

Nance-Horan syndrome-The oral perspective on a rare disease

The present study describes seven patients with Nance-Horan syndrome, all referred to a specialized oral care unit in the Central Denmark Region. A literature search on "Nance Horan Syndrome" resulted in 53 publications among which 29 reported on dental findings. Findings reported in these papers have been systematized to obtain an overview of the reported findings and the terminology on dental morphology. All seven patients included in the present study showed deviations of crown morphology on incisors and/or molars. The only consistent and very clear dental aberration was alterations in the tooth morphology that is screwdriver-shaped incisors and bud molars being most pronounced in the permanent dentition, but were also present in the primary dentition. In addition, three patients had supernumerary teeth, and three had dental agenesis. In conclusion, a dental examination as a part of the diagnostic process may reveal distinct characteristics of the dental morphology, which could be of diagnostic value and facilitate an early diagnosis. In the description of molar morphology in NHS patients, it is recommended to use the term "bud molar." The combination of congenital cataract, screwdriwer-shaped incisors and bud-shaped molars is a strong clinical indication of Nance-Horan syndrome. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Management of dens invaginatus type II with periapical lesion: case report

Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly resulting from epithelial invagination of the tooth crown before calcification. Endodontic treatment of teeth affected by dens invaginatusmay be difficult and complex due to aberrant anatomy. Combined orthograde and surgical approaches for successful treatment of dens invaginatus are effective. This report describes the successful treatmentand results atthe 12-month follow-up of a maxillary lateral incisor showing dens invaginatus type II, a large periapical lesion and an open apex by using combined surgical and endodontic treatment.
