Functional anatomy of the ocular circulatory system: vascular corrosion casts of the cetacean eye

OBJECTIVE

To examine the functional anatomy of the ocular circulation in four bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and five melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra).

PROCEDURE

Eyes were obtained postmortem from whales that died while in captivity and/or were found beached. Specimens from whales were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular corrosion casts and histology. The thermal characteristics of live dolphin eyes were measured using an infrared imaging system.

RESULTS

The whale eye receives its primary blood supply from the ophthalmic rete, which extends just behind the eyeball. The ophthalmic rete diverges from the basilar rete and the cervical rete via the posterior thoracic artery. The iris and ciliary processes are supplied by iridic arteries via the major arterial circle that is located around the iris edge. The retinal vessels show the holangiotic type. Choroidal arteries run in parallel arrays so as to interdigitate the densely packed choroidal veins. The venules in the conjunctival fold and palpebral conjunctiva form a well-developed venous plexus. Thermographic examination revealed that the eye shows a substantially higher degree of thermal emission than adjacent skin areas.

CONCLUSIONS

The cetacean eye is characterized by a unique vascular pattern and multivessel plexuses, which are quite different from those of terrestrial mammals. This suggests that the ocular vasculature might function as a thermoregulatory system so that the appropriate operating temperature for the photoreceptors can be maintained in a deep and cold aquatic environment. The distinctive plexuses in the orbit might also be for pooling blood in the eye to conserve oxygen during dives. The ophthalmic rete might play a role in a pressure-damping effect on cetacean ocular circulation as well.

Branching patterns of the left main coronary artery in the dog demonstrated by the use of corrosion casting technique

As many investigators use dogs as experimental models in catheterization-, ligation-, and collateral flow studies, knowledge and awareness of the canine left coronary artery anatomical variation is vital for differentiation between canine and human coronary arterial patterns and canine and human coronary congenital anomalies with or without circulatory importance. The present study was performed to examine and review the various principal subdivisions of the canine left main coronary artery (LMCA) in vascular casts of 20 hearts obtained from cadavers of clinically normal dogs of various ages, breeds and of either sex. A corrosion casting technique using an acrylic resin called Tensol Cement No. 70 and a lower-viscosity acrylic resin called Mercox were used to produce a three-dimensional model of the canine coronary arteries. In our study, all dog hearts were left preponderant and the patterns of the principal subdivisions of the LMCA were grouped into three types: Type 1 occurred in seven of the 20 dogs (35%), Type 2 in 12 of 20 dogs (60%) and Type 3 in one instance (5%). A comparison between the canine divisional patterns of the LMCA in the vascular casts and those reported in the literature showed major agreement.

Gross anatomy of the portal vein and hepatic artery ramifications in dogs: corrosion cast study

The anatomical variations of the portal vein and the hepatic artery ramifications were analysed on liver corrosion casts in 20 dogs as a possible aid in the surgical management of the organ. The portal vein ramified similarly in all dogs. It divided into the smaller right portal branch from which vessels for the caudate process and both right lobes arose and the substantial left portal branch, which supplied the remaining liver portions and in 12 cases also the dorsal part of the right lateral lobe. Right lateral, right medial and left branches are the major arteries originating from the hepatic artery; however, their origin and course varied among individual animals. In 10 livers, the right lateral and the left branches originated from the hepatic artery, while the right medial branch arose from the left branch and usually supplied the right medial lobe solely. In nine livers, the right medial branch arose directly from the hepatic artery and supplied quadrate lobe and gallbladder as well, while in one liver the common artery, which subsequently divided into lobar branches, branched away from the hepatic artery. An additional branch for the caudate process, originating directly from the hepatic artery, was observed in 10 livers. Certain liver portions received the arterial blood from two major branches, which was particularly characteristic for the right medial lobe (six livers) and caudate process (10 livers). The course of the major arterial branches was also variable, although they proceeded in close anatomical relationship with the portal vein branches. The left arterial branch accompanied the left portal branch on its dorsal aspect (15 cases) or crossed it from the caudal aspect (five cases). The right lateral branch crossed the initial parts of the left and right portal branches either from cranial (12 cases) or caudal aspects (eight cases), while the right medial branch always crossed the left portal branch from its caudal aspect.

Microvascularization of the canine hepatic ducts

The angioarchitecture of the proximal and distal segments of the hepatic duct in the dog was investigated by means of vascular corrosion casts under a scanning electron microscope. The results of observations indicated a change of the pattern of vascularization of the hepatic duct along with the increasing distance of the hepatic duct from the liver and increasing diameter of the duct. In the proximal hepatic duct, the main blood vessels run along the duct as a pair of supplying arteriole and voluminous collecting venule, while in the distal segments of the hepatic duct on the opposite margin of the duct two vascular triads were observed, composed of two venules and one medial arteriole. On the surface of both segments of the hepatic duct, there are well-anastomosed outer venous plexuses. In the distal segments of the hepatic duct, the outer venous plexus accompanies a fine outer arterial rete. Observations of the intramural network indicate the presence of single terminal arterioles running to mucosa and supplying a subepithelial capillary network. Differences were observed in the blood drainage from the mucosa, as in the proximal segment of the hepatic duct single post-capillary venules are found, while in the distal segment in the mucosa a well-developed mucosal venous plexus is formed. In the well-developed venous system of the hepatic duct no valves were observed.

Use of corrosion casting techniques to evaluate coronary collateral vessels and anastomoses in hearts of canine cadavers

OBJECTIVE

To study and investigate branching patterns of the canine coronary arteries and collateral circulation by use of corrosion casting techniques.

SAMPLE POPULATION

31 hearts obtained from cadavers of clinically normal dogs of various ages and breeds and of either sex.

PROCEDURE

3-dimensional reproduction of coronary arteries was achieved by postmortem injection and perfusion with casting materials into the aortic sinus via the ascending aorta. Perfused hearts were macerated and carefully irrigated; the air-dried specimens were examined macroscopically and with a magnifying headset.

RESULTS

Collateral arteries and inter- and intra-arterial anastomoses were successfully detected in 8 corrosion cast specimens. In total, 9 coronary collateral arteries and 3 interarterial anastomoses were found.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Our finding of coronary collateral arteries in canine hearts is in agreement with recent findings in coronary flow study. On the basis of our results, vasodilation treatment to improve collateral vessel remodeling in dogs with myocardial dysfunction may be warranted.

Vascular changes associated with chorioretinal and optic nerve colobomas in rats (Crj: CD(SD), IGS)

OBJECTIVE

Three female adult rats (Crj: CD(SD) IGS) with colobomatous anomalies were investigated.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The microvascular changes of the coloboma were studied using the techniques of fluorescein angiography, histology and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular corrosion casts.

RESULTS

Fluorescein angiography revealed the pits of the optic disk as a dark hole with some abnormalities in vessel arrangement. Light microscopy confirmed the presence of attenuated lamina cribrosa, retinal dysplasia and marked dilation of the retinal veins. SEM revealed that the optic disk coloboma formed a crater-like pit and that central retinal vessels ran a tortuous course along the bottom and side of the crater. Capillaries in the optic nerve head were missing in the affected area. The central retinal veins were thick and had various changes such as strangulation, rough surface structures, mural voids and evaginations, which represent loss of integrity of the vascular wall.

CONCLUSIONS

These vascular changes that are associated with colobomatous anomalies may impede the retinal circulation and be responsible for the fluctuating fluorescein pattern during fluorangiogram of affected animals. The lesions of the vascular wall may increase the subretinal fluid due to the leakage of fluid, thus causing the maculopathy or serous retinopathy, which is frequently associated with posterior pole coloboma.

Microvasculature of the hamster eye: scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts

The architecture of the retina, choroid and anterior eye segment was investigated in 12 Syrian hamsters using scanning electron micrographs of methylmethacrylate corrosion casts. The hamster eye receives its primary blood supply from the long posterior ciliary artery, which directly enters the optic nerve head, and divides into three branches: the central retinal artery and medial and lateral long posterior ciliary arteries. In the retina the central retinal artery divides into six radiating branches. Retinal arterioles form a slender and long course to capillaries. Retinal capillaries are extremely thin in diameter and form a sparse capillary network. The choroid is supplied by the long posterior ciliary arteries. Choroidal arterioles exhibit a thick and short course to the choriocapillaris. The choriocapillaris is thick and sinusoid-like, forming a dense network in the choroid. The ciliary body, iris and bulbar conjunctiva are supplied by the anterior ciliary arteries, which are branches of the long posterior ciliary arteries. Capillaries supplying the anterior margin of the ciliary process are large in diameter with an irregular bore, forming a thoroughfare channel draining blood in the ciliary arterioles into the pars plana vessels. Blood from the retina is drained by the central retinal veins. Venules from the anterior eye segment empty into the vortex veins via the pars plana vessels. Venous blood from the choroid is drained only by vortex veins via the choroidal veins. The functional significance of the vascular architecture and species differences are discussed.

[The blood vessels of the mesonephros of domestic cattle (Bos taurus), a corrosion cast study]

The blood vessels of the bovine mesonephros - a corrosion cast study Using scanning electron microscopy plastoid corrosion cast specimens of the mesonephros of 30-45-day-old bovine foetuses were investigated. The studies showed that the blood vessels of the mesonephros are organized in two separate networks similar to these of the teleosts and amphibians. The glomerula mesonephrica originate from the aorta implying that they belong to the high pressure system. The tubuli mesonephrici are surrounded by a filamentous independent capillary network which is shown for the first time in these studies. This capillary network originates from the caudal cardinal veins and represents a mesonephric portal system with a relatively low blood pressure. The blood from the two capillary networks diverts into terminal veins and into the subcardinal veins. The questions of haemodynamics in the mesonephros are discussed.

Third coronary artery in monkey heart

Investigations were carried out on 55 monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops, Macaca fascicularis) hearts by stereomicroscopic dissection and measurements. Latex-injected specimens and corrosion casts showed that, as in humans, the hearts were usually (in 98.2% of the cases) supplied by two coronary arteries (CAs)--the left (LCA) and the right coronary artery (RCA), and occasionally (in 1.8% of the cases) also by a third one (TCA). Furthermore, the orifice of the TCA was situated in the right aortic sinus at the same level as the RCA and 0.2 mm in front of it. The LCA and the RCA originated from the corresponding aortic sinuses and the external diameter of the LCA was greater [average: 1.65+/-0.39 (SD) mm] than that of the RCA [average 0.94+/-0.15 (SD) mm] and the TCA (0.8 mm). The LCA orifice was more often above (76.3%) than below the free edge of the left aortic valve leaflet. The longitudinal axis of the aortic root and of the initial part of the LCA formed an angle of 45-120 degrees (average: 52 degrees). The orifice of the RCA was usually above (82.3%) the free edge of the right aortic valve leaflet, and less frequently below it (17.7%). The longitudinal axis of the aortic root and of the initial part of the RCA formed an angle of 70-150 degrees (average: 103 degrees). The resemblance of monkey CAs to their human counterparts make them a suitable model for experimental studies on coronary circulation.

Ultrasonographic findings in dogs with hyperammonemia: 90 cases (2000–2002)

OBJECTIVE

To determine ultrasonographic abnormalities in dogs with hyperammonemia.

DESIGN

Retrospective study.

ANIMALS

90 client-owned dogs with hyperammonemia.

PROCEDURE

Ultrasonography of the abdominal vessels and organs was performed in a systematic way. Dogs in which the ultrasonographic diagnosis was a congenital portosystemic shunt were included only if they underwent laparotomy or necropsy. Dogs in which the abdominal vasculature appeared normal and dogs in which the ultrasonographic diagnosis was acquired portosystemic shunts and portal hypertension were included only if liver biopsy specimens were submitted for histologic examination.

RESULTS

Ultrasonography excluded portosystemic shunting in 11 dogs. Acquired portosystemic shunts were found in 17 dogs, of which 3 had arterioportal fistulae and 14 had other hepatic abnormalities. Congenital portosystemic shunts were found in 61 dogs, of which 19 had intrahepatic shunts and 42 had extrahepatic shunts. Intrahepatic shunts originated from the left portal branch in 14 dogs and the right portal branch in 5. Extrahepatic shunts originated from the splenic vein, the right gastric vein, or both and entered the caudal vena cava or the thorax. Ultrasonography revealed splenic-caval shunts in 24 dogs, right gastric-caval shunts in 9 dogs, splenic-azygos shunts in 8 dogs, and a right gastric-azygos shunt in 1 dog.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Results suggest that ultrasonography is a reliable diagnostic method to noninvasively characterize the underlying disease in dogs with hyperammonemia. A dilated left testicular or ovarian vein was a reliable indicator of acquired portosystemic shunts.

Development of the Areola in the Early Placenta of the One-humped Camel (Camelus dromedarius): A Light, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopical Study

This study aimed to elucidate development of the areola in the early dromedary placenta in comparison with that of the pig and mare. Placental tissues from 25 pregnant camels were obtained from Cairo abattoir and prepared for light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy by routine methods. Vascular casts were made by injection of 4 : 1 liquid plastic mixture of mercox and methylmethacrylate. Areolar formation was first observed at 4.5 cm curved-crown-rump CVR length, while by 5-9 cm CVR length, the endometrial surface was uneven and studded with numerous uterine gland openings, where corresponding foetal areolae were barely detectable and the foetal areolar cells were of variable appearance and covered with long microvilli. At 10-13 cm CVR length the uterine gland openings developed irregular folds and the maternal areolar cells showed numerous apical blebs. At 14-29 cm CVR length the foetal areolae showed a great increase in height at the expense of their width. At 30-34 cm (CVR) length the maternal areolae appeared discoid and sharply demarcated from the surrounding inter-areolar tissues and the foetal areolae were rounded to irregular in shape with well-developed areolar rims. The vascular casts showed a widely meshed capillary network on the maternal areola, connecting with the pre- and post-capillary vessels, whereas the foetal side showed a relatively dense capillary meshwork. These studies indicate that the areola in the placenta of the one-humped camel is of the regular type like in the pig, and is poorly vascularized.

Intermediary spleen microvasculature in canis familiaris- morphological evidences of a closed and open type

Numerous studies have been made regarding circulation via the red pulp of the spleen, and intense controversy surrounds the question as to whether or not endothelial continuity exists between arterial and venous vessels. Aware of this intense controversy, and in order to perform investigation over the spleen of dogs infected with a parasitic disease (future reports shall be done), the authors studied the vascularization of the normal dog spleen in order to define its normal pattern and evaluate the eventual changes of the circulation pattern under the parasitic condition. These studies led us to report, unequivocally, using complementary vascular replective techniques, that the normal dog's intermediary circulation is morphologically closed and of the open kind also. These findings are contrary to the thesis that defends the existence of a physiologically closed and morphologically open circulation in the dog spleen. Lymphatic vessels in the spleen of the dog are also demonstrated.

[August Schummer (1902-1977): breaking ground for new corrosion casting anatomy]

About 70 years ago, when the so-called polymeric science succeeded in producing synthetic materials and making it available to industrial manufacturing, August Schummer intuitively recognized and reconnoitred the use of these new materials for corrosion casting anatomy. Through the employment of this method, which was named after him, an epoch-making step was achieved in the anatomy of corrosion casting. In the year that followed there has been a very successful progress in the exploration of blood vessels right through into the capillaries of the organs. On the occasion of the 100th birthday of August Schummer (born 13th of December 1902 in Sălişte near Hermannstadt, died 1st of March 1977 in Giessen), former Professor of Veterinary Anatomy at the Universität Giessen, we commemorate the life and work of this exceptionally talented and passionate anatomist.

Vasculature of the ophthalmic rete in night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax): scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts

Vasculature of the ophthalmic rete (rete ophthalmicum) in the night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) was studied using scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts and light microscopy on tissue sections. Most blood to the eyeball and a lesser volume of blood to the brain passed through the ophthalmic rete via the external ophthalmic artery. The collateral retial arterioles originated from the external ophthalmic artery forming a flat and fusiform-shaped arterial network at the ventrotemporal region of the eyeball. The arterial network was intermixed with a similar complex of the veins from the eye. The ophthalmotemporal artery, which supplied the eyeball posteriorly, and supraorbital and infraorbital arteries, which supplied the eyeball anteriorly, originated from the rete. Blood from the eye, which is a site of potential heat loss, drained into the ophthalmic rete via the ophthalmotemporal vein. On the casts of retial arterioles, slit-like cleavages at branching sites representing flap valves, which might play a role as sluice valves, were seen. In addition, marks of circularly running grooves, which might represent tufts of smooth muscle cells and might contribute to a sphincter activity, were observed. These anatomical specializations of the avian ophthalmic rete, involving parallel arrangement of arteries and veins, may function to facilitate counter-current heat exchange and to regulate blood pressure and volume to the eye and the brain.

The effect of nephrotomy on renal function and morphology in dogs

OBJECTIVE

To determine whether bisection or intersegmental nephrotomy adversely affects glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and whether bisection nephrotomy has less adverse effect than intersegmental nephrotomy.

STUDY DESIGN

Dogs assigned to 5 groups of 3 dogs each, depending on time of euthanasia at postoperative day 1, 4, 8, 15, or 29.

ANIMALS

Fifteen healthy adult intact female dogs.

METHODS

Within 4 days of total and single kidney GFR measurements using technetium Tc 99m-DTPA, left intersegmental nephrotomy and right bisection nephrotomy were performed. The GFR measurements were repeated the day before dogs were killed except for the day 1 group. Histologic examination was performed on kidneys harvested from day 1, 4, 8, and 29 groups. Severity of lesions was scored on a 0 to 4 scale. Single kidney GFR was compared in each kidney before and after nephrotomy. Histologic and GFR changes were compared between bisection and intersegmental nephrotomy kidneys for each time period.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

Three days after surgery, total GFR was increased from baseline by 176%, with no difference in percent change in single kidney GFR between intersegmental and bisection nephrotomy. By day 7, total and single kidney GFR were not different than baseline. Bisection nephrotomy caused more intrarenal hemorrhage and cortical infarction and inflammation than intersegmental nephrotomy. By 4 weeks, no significant histologic differences were observed between the 2 techniques.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Neither intersegmental nor bisection nephrotomy adversely affected GFR. As intersegmental nephrotomy requires additional surgical manipulation and time, bisection nephrotomy is the technique of choice for nephrotomy in dogs.

Development of a standardized nomenclature for bronchoscopy of the respiratory system of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena)

Respiratory disease is common in captive and wild cetaceans. Bronchoscopy may permit early diagnosis of respiratory disease in dolphins and porpoises. Refinement of cetacean bronchoscopy requires development of a nomenclature system to facilitate description of the anatomic site at which lesions occur. A standard bronchoscopic nomenclature also permits serial evaluations of lesions and enhances communication between veterinarians. In this project, we adapted the bronchoscopic nomenclature devised by Amis and McKiernan for the dog and horse to the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Silastic and air-dried models of the bronchial tree of the harbor porpoise were made to illustrate the anatomy and devise the nomenclature. Bronchial anatomy was consistent among the four porpoise lungs studied. The Amis and McKiernan nomenclature was readily adaptable to the harbor porpoise lung with minor modifications and may be useful for cetacean bronchoscopy.

Microvasculature of the rat eye: scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts

Methylmethacrylate castings of the eye microvasculature were prepared from 10 Spargue-Dawley rats and studied by electron microscopy. The choroidal arterioles are larger in diameter than retinal arterioles, and have a shorter course to choroidal capillaries than retinal arterioles to retinal capillaries. Retinal capillaries are extremely thin in diameter and form a sparse retinal capillary network. The choriocapillaris is large and sinusoid-like, forming a compactly arranged network in the choroid. These differences in the microvasculature between the choroid and retina help explain the differences in ocular hemodynamics; that is, the blood flow in the choroid is faster than that in the retina. Capillaries of the iris show a zigzag configuration, which may be an accommodation for dilation and constriction of the pupil. Capillaries of the ciliary body are of large diameter forming leaf-like configurations, presumably to contribute to the secretion of the aqueous humor. Capillaries of the conjunctiva exhibit a somewhat coiled configuration, the arrangement of which reduce tension of the conjunctiva vessels caused by eyeball movement. Intra-arterial cushions, which control blood flow at the branching sites, are found in both choroidal or retinal arterioles.

Microvasculature of hydronephrotic kidneys in KK-A(Y) mice

Spontaneous hydronephrosis in KK-A(Y) mice was studied using light and electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of resin casts to evaluate micro vascular changes in the kidney. The renal parenchyma was extremely thin as a result of tubular atrophy. Histologically, varying degrees of glomerulosclerosis were observed. Ultrastructurally, marked thickenings of the glomerular basal lamina, an increase in mesangial cells and matrix, and marked effacement of foot processes were observed. In resin casts, a marked reduction in number of glomeruli was evident. The capillaries were thin, strangulated and tom-off to varying degrees in severely affected glomeruli. In the medulla, the three-dimensional capillary network running along the tubules was lost and changed to a two-dimensional vascular bed. Despite severe hydronephrosis, the glomerular capillary network was relatively well preserved, being either slightly or moderately injured in approximately 60% of surviving glomeruli.

The vascular bed in the rabbit ear: microangiography and scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts

The vascular bed of the rabbit ear has been studied with light microscopy, microangiography and scanning electron microscopy of resin casts in a series of 20 ears. The major arteries supplying the ear were the central and rostral auricular branches of the caudal auricular artery. The caudal auricular branch was not observed, except as a small vessel supplying the rostral auricular base. The central auricular branch supplied blood to most of the auricular integument and was surrounded by capillaries extended from those supplying the skin. The periarterial capillaries formed a fine, compact network in the tunica media and were closely related to the central auricular branch. Evidence is presented suggesting that this vascular mechanism has a counter-current heat-exchange function for regulating body temperature. The artery had the well-developed internal elastic lamina and intimal cushions that regulate blood flow at the branching sites. A number of arteriovenous anastomoses were also observed between arterioles and venules, particularly in marginal regions of the ear. The intimal cushions and arteriovenous anastomoses might play an additional role in thermoregulation by regulating local blood flow in the ear.

Obstructive uropathy and hydronephrosis in male KK-Ay mice: a report of cases

Uropathy associated with hydronephrosis was observed frequently in our male KK-Ay mouse colony during a long-term study of diabetes. The lesion occurred in 24 of the 31 KK-Ay male mice and accounted for the greatest number of spontaneous deaths among them. It was observed after 4 months of age and involved about hard plugs of altered seminal material resembling the seminal vesicle secretion. The plugs became impacted in the urethral bulb and the bladder. The penile anatomy, with its flexure, pressure on the urethra from the bulbocavernosus muscle, and the characteristic ability of the seminal fluid to easily coagulate to form the vaginal plug may have contributed to the lesion. Correlation between development of the uropathy and diabetes has not been established.

Collagen fiber arrangement in canine hepatic venules

Cell-maceration/scanning electron microscopy, serial sections and scanning electron microscopy of vascular resin casts were employed to demonstrate the arrangement of collagen fibers in the terminal hepatic venules, involving the central, intercalated and collecting veins in dog liver. In cell-maceration specimens, each collagen fiber was observed to run in various directions, forming a sheath with a compact meshwork of collagen fibers. The collagenous meshwork in the hepatic venules was looser than those of the terminal portal venules and hepatic arterioles. Some collagen fibers formed bundles with an elongated spiral arrangement encircling the wall of the terminal hepatic venules. In resin casts, these venules were observed as a twisted configuration caused by spiral collagen bundles. A helical modification of such connective tissue bundles might provide a mechanically stable vascular structure and permit reversible changes in linear and circumferential vascular dimensions at the terminal tributaries of veins. Round or oval pores with diameters of approximately 9 microns were also observed in the sheath of collagen fibers. These pores, together with the relatively loose collagenous meshwork in the hepatic venules, might play a role in lymphocyte migration from these venules into the surrounding tissue and provide high permeability to the venule walls. No such helical configuration and pores were observed in either the portal venules or the hepatic arterioles.

Morphologic peculiarities of the renal cortical vasculature connected with blood redistribution in the kidney of the domestic pig

The cortical blood vessels from 2 to 8 month old Camborow hybrid pigs and Belgium landrace pigs were studied using histologic and semithin sections as well as corrosion casts and cleared preparations of intravascular injection. It was established that the cortical blood vessels of the porcine kidney possess peculiarities that may regulate the redistribution of blood in the cortex. These peculiarities were found in the interlobular arteries, in the efferent arterioles of midcortical nephrons, in afferent arterioles of juxtamedullar glomeruli, and in the glomerular capillary networks. It was established that the number of renal corpuscles is different in the various zones of the cortex.

[The morphology of the thyroid gland in poultry with special regard to seasonal variations]

The thyroid glands of 31 chickens at the age of 17 to 24 months were investigated. Different methods of anatomical preparation, casts of vessels and scanning electron microscopy were used. The thyroid gland of birds is a paired organ. It is located on the ventral surface of the base of the neck within the thoracic inlet. The left thyroid gland is placed more cranially than the right one. Each thyroid gland is closely connected to the common carotid artery on the medial side, from which it is supplied and to the jugular vein on the lateral side. It is a reddish-brown organ and of lenticular profile. The gland measures on average 10 mm in length, 6 mm in width and 2 mm in thickness, and is covered by a thin connective tissue capsule which holds adipose cells. It seems that each thyroid follicle is surrounded by a net of capillaries. The investigation by scanning electron microscopy proved that the follicles are oval with a pyramidal top on each end. The cuboidal epithelium cells leave impressions in the colloid. Epithelium cells carry microvilli on the follicle side surface. Described seasonal changes of the thyroid gland in size and activity were able to be confirmed by the examination of the organ in July and December. In winter the follicular cells were higher and the follicles had a greater volume.

The morphology of the ureter in the duck (Anas platyrhynchos)

The morphology of the ureter of the duck was investigated, using histological, SEM and TEM techniques. The inner perimeter, the total thickness of the ureteral wall and the thickness of each uretral layer were measured. The epithelium was tall columnar and pseudostratified along all the tracts of the ureter and showed a high muco-secretive activity. The lamina propria contained numerous capillaries and aggregates of leucocytes and macrophages. Throughout the lamina propria there was a dense plexus of nerves. Some denuded single nerve fibres were observed between the epithelial basal cells. A plexus of nerves was also observed in the tunica muscularis. The ostium cloacale ureteris opened on a well-developed papilla in the dorsal region of the urodeum. The total thickness of the ureteral wall, the thickness of the lamina propria and the tunica muscularis, and the inner perimeter progressively increased towards the ostium. The above observations suggest that the avian ureter plays an important role in the modification of the urine coming from medullary cones, and in emission of the urine into the cloaca.

Congenital interruption of the portal vein and caudal vena cava in dogs: six case reports and a review of the literature

OBJECTIVE

To describe six dogs with congenital abnormalities involving the portal vein, caudal vena cava, or both.

ANIMALS

Six client-owned dogs with congenital interruption of the portal vein or the caudal vena cava, or both.

METHODS

Portal vein and caudal vena cava anatomy was evaluated by contrast radiography and visualization at surgery. Vascular casts or plastinated specimens were obtained in three animals.

RESULTS

Portal blood shunted into the caudal vena cava in four dogs and the left hepatic vein in one. Two of these five dogs also had interruption of the caudal vena cava with continuation as azygous vein, as did an additional dog, in which the portal vein was normally formed. Portal vein interruption was present in 5 of 74 (6.8%) dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts evaluated at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital during the study period.

CONCLUSIONS

Serious malformations of the abdominal veins were present in more than 1 in 20 dogs with single congenital portosystemic shunts.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Veterinarians involved in diagnosis and surgery for portosystemic shunts should be aware of these potential malformations, and portal vein continuity should be evaluated in all dogs before attempting shunt attenuation.

Injection technique and scanning electron microscopic study of the arterial pattern of the 20 gestation days (G20) rat fetus

A technique to obtain microvascular corrosion casts of the G20 rat fetus and the normal pattern of the main arteries of the G20 rat fetus are described. The casts were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The arterial pattern is similar to that described in the adult; however, several variations have been found. It is concluded that the use of vascular corrosion casts studied by SEM may be particularly helpful to observe the extremely small arteries of rat fetuses. Moreover, we suggest that this technique may be useful in practical teratological studies.

[Intramural blood vessels of the large intestine of the horse (Equus przewalskii f. caballus)]

The vascular system of the large intestine of 12 horses was examined by means of vascular corrosion casts, histology and transmission electron microscopy providing the following results. The Aa. et Vv. breves et longae leave the mesenteric vessels, respectively the subserously on the teniae lying cecal vessels to reach the tela subserosa at the mesenteric margin. The short vessels enter the deeper layers of the wall instantly, whereas the Aa. et Vv. longae move towards the submucosa by penetrating the muscular layers after a variable subserous course. The tela submucosa contains an arterial and a venous vascular plexus. In broader areas of the submucosa a three-dimensional vascular network can be found. This consists of a deep and a superficial vascular plexus, which are closely interconnected. The deep plexus is applied to the inner circular muscles, whereas the superficial plexus is adjacent to the muscularis mucosae. The (deep) arterial plexus receives its afflux from the Aa. breves et longae and supplies parts of the circular muscle layer with recurrent muscle branches. The vascularisation of the mucosa also originates from the submucosal (superficial) plexus. In the basal tunica mucosa, the ascending arteries form a transversal network from which arterioles branch into periglandular capillaries around each Lieberkühn crypt. Close to the lumen, a polygonal subepithelial capillary system is formed. The capillaries turn into postcapillary venules immediately below the epithelium of the mucosal surface. Veins move vertically through the submucosa to enter the submucosal plexus after few inflowing side branches. Branches of the subserous-submucosal connections form an intermuscular plexus between the circular and longitudinal muscular layer. This plexus supplies the capillaries of the tunica muscularis. The subepithelial capillaries are predominantly lined with a fenestrated endothelium, whereas the capillaries of the pericryptal mucosa mainly show a continuous endothelial lining. The latter contain multiple vesicles, which may fuse in order to form transcytoplasmic channels. Sphincter-like muscle bundles at the transition points from capillaries to venules may provide hemodynamic regulatory structures in the submucosa of the horse. Veins with circumferential cushions of smooth muscle fibres, so-called 'throttle veins', are also found.

[Milk ducts and chaos]

In the present report, the arrangement of the milk-duct system of one quarter of the bovine udder has been investigated using a corrosion preparation. In general, the observations revealed the following remarkable principles of construction: 1. The milk ducts branched out into parallel plains; 2. The manner of the extension of the milk ducts was similar in the whole system; and 3. Narrow elements alternated with sinus-like parts. The same patterns occurred permanently in all levels of magnification. Thus, it was realized that the principle of the self-similarity, which puts the chaos of various forms in an order at a higher level.

Gross anatomy of the portal vein and its tributaries in the opossum (Didelphis albiventris)

The gross anatomy of the portal vein (V. portae) and its tributaries was studied through anatomical methods, i.e. dissection, corrosion and diaphanization, in 45 opossums (Didelphis albiventris). In all animals the portal vein was formed by the junction of the cranial mesenteric, caudal mesenteric and lienal veins (V. mesenterica cranialis, V. mesenterica caudalis and V. lienalis, respectively). Many collateral tributaries were observed running into the portal venous trunk.

Anatomy of the ocular arteries in the horse

Orbital and intrabulbar arteries were studied in 20 equine eyes by means of latex injections and methylmethacrylate casts. The orbital branches of the external ophthalmic artery arise far caudal to the posterior pole of the eyeball and present a variable topographic arrangement. The intrabulbar arteries are supplied by ciliary and choroidoretinal arteries. Dependent on their entrance into the eyeball, the ciliary arteries are subdivided into a posterior and an anterior group. The posterior ciliary arteries perforate the sclera post equatorially and consist of 4 major vessels that penetrate in the lateral, medial, dorsal and ventral meridian of the eyeball, respectively. The lateral and medial of these arteries follow a long intrabulbar trajectory after having supplied several short posterior ciliary arteries to the choroid. The anterior ciliary arteries consist of a dorsal and a ventral vessel which penetrate the eyeball in the pericorneal area. The choroidoretinal arteries form an arterial network around the optic nerve at the posterior pole of the eyeball. They give rise to all retinal arterioles and some peridiscal choroidal branches. The larger part of the choroid is supplied by branches of the posterior ciliary arteries. Additionally, the anterior choroid receives recurrent branches from an arterial circle that lies externally in the ciliary ring. The iris contains a major arterial circle formed by the lateral and medial long posterior ciliary arteries and both anterior ciliary arteries. A minor iridic arterial circle nor central retinal artery could be found in the equine eyes examined.

Transportal approach for attenuating intrahepatic portosystemic shunts in dogs

A novel surgical approach, using portal venotomy during total hepatic vascular occlusion, was used to locate and attenuate congenital intrahepatic portosystemic shunts in nine dogs. Shunt location was consistent with a persistent ductus venosus in only two dogs. In the remaining seven dogs the shunts were window-like orifices arising from either the left (two dogs) or right portal vein branch (five dogs) and communicating with the ipsilateral hepatic vein or caudal vena cava. The transportal approach using total hepatic vascular occlusion consistently provided good access to the portosystemic shunts, including those with window-like communications. A 7 to 16 minute period of total vascular occlusion was well-tolerated hemodynamically, with few intraoperative complications. Intrahepatic shunts were successfully attenuated in eight dogs, while one dog with portal atresia was euthanatized. The postoperative course was complicated by high protein pulmonary edema (one dog), an encapsulated biliary pseudocyst (one dog) and uncontrollable hemorrhage caused by an uncharacterized coagulopathy (one dog). Three dogs required a second operation to further attenuate their shunts. The clinical condition of all seven surviving dogs was improved after surgery.

[The blood vessel system of the large intestine of swine (Sus scrofa f. domestica)]

The circulatory system of the large intestine of 27 pigs was examined by means of corrosion anatomy (vascular casts), histology and electron microscopy. The results were as follows: The Aa. et Vv. breves et longae leave the mesenteric vessels and reach the wall of the intestine at the mesenteric margin. The short vessels enter the deeper layers of the wall, whereas the Aa. et Vv. longae, by taking a variable subserous course, reach the submucosa after penetrating the muscular layers. The tela submucosa contains an arterial and a venous vascular plexus. Where the submucosa is larger, there is a three-dimensional vascular network, a deep and superficial vascular plexus that are closely interconnected. The deep plexus is applied to the inner circular muscles, whereas the superficial plexus is adjacent to the muscularis mucosae. The deep arterial plexus receives its afflux from the Aa. breves et longae and provides part of the circular muscle layers with recurrent muscle branches. The vascularization of the mucosa is derived from the (superficial) submucosal plexus. The arteries that ascend the tunica mucosa ramify, in the form of a brush, into some arterioles. In the basal part of the mucosa, they turn into a periglandular capillary system, i.e. a network around each Lieberkühn crypt. Close to the lumen, a polygonal subepithelial capillary system is formed. Below the epithelium of the mucosal surface, the capillaries turn into postcapillary venules. These are running vertically through the submucosa, with few inflowing side branches, and finally enter the submucosal plexus An intermuscular plexus is formed by anastomoses between the circular and the longitudinal muscular layers from the branches of the subserous-submucosal connections. This intermuscular plexus provides the capillaries for the tunica muscularis. The subepithelial capillaries are, above all, furnished with a so-called fenestrated endothelium, whereas the capillaries of the pericryptal mucosa mainly show a continuous endothelium. The latter contains multiple vesicles that can fuse to form transcytoplasmic channels. In the wall of the large intestine of the pig, there are no sure indications as to the existence of either arterio-venous anastomoses or haemodynamic regulatory structures.

Methods for permanent conservation of biological objects and anatomic preparations in synthetic resins

Two methods for preparing packets of synthetic resin for permanent preservation of biological objects and anatomical tissue have been developed. The first method is applied when adding corrosive preparations to epoxide resin. The corrosive preparation is soaked in a mixture of epoxide resin and hardener in a ratio, experimentally determined. The induration proceed at room temperature for 12 h. The second method has two options and is applied for the conservation of biological objects and anatomical preparations in polymethylmethacrylate by a successive immersing of the object in a system of dehydrating mixtures: 50%, 70%, 90% and 96% water solution of methanol and ethanol and in a mixture of acetone and ethanol (1:1) and in acetone or in methylene chloride. The object, thus prepared, is impregnated in vacuum with polymer of methylmethacrylate, benzoyl peroxide and stearic acid or in a composition containing: methylmethacrylate, benzoyl peroxide, dibutylphthalate and tertiary aromatic amine, in optimum correlations of the components, experimentally determined. The induration proceed by heating in a water bath (37 + 3 degrees C) for 3 h and at 30 degrees C temperature in the course of 6-8 h in the first option or at room temperature for about 3 days in the second option. The advantages of the proposed methods are: the use of cheap and available materials for the production of a simplified technological scheme of strongly transparent packages, preserved over a long period; preserving the sizes, the form and natural colour of the objects and preparations as well as a possibility for selective tinting of the separate tissues and systems in the preserved biological objects and anatomical preparations; a possibility for stereomicroscopic observation of the objects and preparations preserved.

Vascular supply of the tendon of the equine deep digital flexor muscle within the digital sheath

The vascular and microvascular anatomy of the equine deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) within the digital sheath was studied by injecting the vasculature with either colored latex or barium sulphate for radiographic, microangiographic, histologic, and computed tomographic (CT) evaluation. Consecutive 4-mm thick two-dimensional CT slice data were reconstructed to 3-dimensional volumetric images to enhance spatial evaluation of the blood supply. Gross dissection and angiographic studies identified three major vascular sources. Above the fetlock, the DDFT was supplied by either a branch of the medial palmar artery (Arteriae digitalis palmaris communis II) or a branch of the medial palmar digital artery (A. digitalis [palmaris propria III] medialis). Below the fetlock, the DDFT was supplied by branches from the lateral and medial palmar branches to the proximal phalanx (Ramus palmaris phalangis proximalis). The most distal aspect of the tendon received small branches from the medial and lateral palmar digital arteries. Using histology and microangigraphy we observed an extensive and uniform intratendinous vascular network above and below the fetlock, with a relatively avascular region of tendon palmar to the fetlock. The most distal 2.0 to 2.5 cm of the tendon within the sheath was heavily infiltrated with fibrocartilage along its dorsal aspect.

Vascularization of the pineal gland in the crow

The blood vascularization in the pineal gland of the crow was investigated in detail using a vascular corrosion cast technique and by scanning electron microscopy. The pineal gland received two afferent arteries on either side, each artery arising from the A. cerebralis caudalis (CC) which supplied its branches to the hemisphere. The pineal gland of the crow was so highly vascularized as to be suggestive of its high metabolic and endocrine activities. The efferent veins drained into the Sinus occipitalis and the Sinus sagittalis dorsalis. There was a direct vascular connection between capillaries of the stalk of the gland and those of the Plexus choroideus.

[The microvascularization of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles in the goat (Capra hircus)]

The goat choroid plexus angioarchitecture of the lateral ventricles was studied under the SEM using the method of "microvascular corrosion casts". The whole plexus is semilunar shaped and directed in an antero-posterior, latero-median fashion. In the plexus the lateral extremity is larger than the median one. All the components of the vascular bed (arteries, veins and capillaries) of the choroid plexus have interesting morpho-structural features. In particular, the capillaries are more developed than the other components and they are variously located on both sides of the plexus. The capillary network has a various organization in different zones of each side of the plexus.

Gross anatomy of the canine portal vein

The gross anatomy of the portal vein of 21 dogs was studied by venous portography, corrosion casting, and gross dissection. The portal vein in all specimens originated by confluence of the cranial and caudal mesenteric veins. Its large tributaries were the splenic and gastroduodenal veins, which entered the portal vein between its origin and the hepatic porta. At the hepatic porta, the portal vein divided into a short right branch and a larger left branch. The right branch ramified in the caudate process of the caudate lobe and in the right lateral lobe of the liver. The left branch was essentially the continuation of the portal vein from which successive branches passed to each of the remaining lobes of the liver and the papillary process of the caudate lobe.

Coronary arterial anatomy of the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius)

The detailed coronary arterial anatomy of seven camels was studied and compared with that of horses and cattle. In camels, there is a bilateral coronary supply, the right coronary artery being the larger. The left coronary artery follows the same pattern as that in horses. The ramus collateralis proximalis in camels separates off some distance away from the origin of the ramus interventricularis paraconalis, as in horses, whereas it separates of very quickly in cattle. The ramus collateralis distalis has two branches in camels, whereas the left distal ventriculi ramus does not branch. The ramus angularis is also absent but the left distal atrii ramus is present.

Communication of the ulnaris lateralis bursa with the equine elbow joint and evaluation of caudal arthrocentesis

Elbows from cadaver limbs were evaluated to determine the presence of a communication between the ulnaris lateralis bursa (ULB) and the joint and the extent of the bursa. Thirty-two pairs of joints were studied: 12 pairs were frozen, then transversely sectioned and 20 pairs were injected with methyl methacrylate. The 12 frozen-section pairs revealed a communication between the ULB and the elbow joint in 9/24 joints (37.5%) and a true bursa (absence of communication) in 15/24 joints (62.5%). The mean bursal length in adult horses was 3.8 cm. There was no significant difference in the length of the bursa or presence of bursa-joint communication between the right and left limbs. In the acrylic specimens a communication between the ULB and the joint was found in 19/40 specimens (47.5%). There was no significant correlation between age or sex and frequency of communication. There was a significantly greater prevalence of communications present in Quarter Horse than in non-Quarter Horse (P < 0.05) joints. A communication between the ULB and the joint is not always present, and therefore injection of the elbow joint via the ULB may be unreliable.

[The blood supply to the stomach of the dog--a corrosion cast and scanning electron microscopic study]

An unimpaired vascular circulation is vital for gastric function. The arteries of the stomach originate from the coeliac artery; the veins lead to the portal vein. Arteries in the right half of the organ form a perigastric circle of anastomosing vessels, which is lacking on the left side. The basal capillary network of the gastric submucosa shows no important regional differences. Territories of vascularisation are documented for the canine stomach.

Microvascular circulation of the small intestine in horses

The microvascular anatomic features of the small intestine was described by correlating results of microangiography, light microscopy, gross studies, and scanning electron microscopy of vascular replicas in 14 horses. After heparinization, the horses were euthanatized, a length of jejunum was transected, and blood was flushed free of the circulation, using isotonic NaCl solution. In six horses, the circulatory system was perfused with a modified radiopaque medium and evaluated radiographically. These sections were then evaluated by standard histologic methods. Sections from 8 horses were perfused with 1 of 2 types of plastics and studied grossly or by scanning electron microscopy. The marginal arterial arcade gives rise to vessels that enter the jejunum at the mesenteric angle. These vessels penetrated either directly, by branching and entering on both sides of the mesenteric angle, or supplying only 1 side of the mesenteric angle. All these vessels continued in the submucosa branching extensively, forming a submucosal plexus. This submucosal plexus supplied the tunica muscularis, tunica serosa, and the mucosa. Vessels within the 2 muscle layers ran parallel to the muscle fibers and, consequently, perpendicular to each other. The arterial supply to the mucosa penetrated the muscularis mucosae and branched to supply 2 mucosal capillary networks. An eccentrically placed arteriole penetrated the base of the villus and spiralled to the tip where it "fountained" into a mesh-like capillary network, which descended peripherally in the villus to drain via 1 to 3, but most commonly 2 venules. Anatomic and radiographic study of the lacrimal apparatus of llamas

The anatomy of the nasolacrimal duct of llamas was examined grossly and radiographically in 2 llamas. Dacryocystorhinography was performed on cadaver heads, using a radiographic aqueous contrast agent. Anatomic casts of the nasolacrimal apparatus were obtained by cannulation of the duct and use of polyurethane cast material. Dacryocystorhinography accurately revealed the nasolacrimal apparatus and compared favorably with gross dissections and polyurethane casts.

Microvascular circulation of the descending colon in horses

The microvascular circulation of the descending colon was studied in 5 adult horses, using microangiography and light microscopy combined with gross studies and scanning electron microscopy of vascular replicas. After heparinization, horses were euthanatized, and 3 segments of the descending colon and its mesentery containing 1 vascular arcade were removed from each horse. The fecal balls were gently massaged from the lumen, and the blood was flushed free of the circulation with isotonic NaCl. In 5 segments, the vascular system was injected with a modified radiopaque medium and evaluated radiographically. Specimens examined radiographically also were prepared for histologic examination, using standard methods. Ten segments were injected with 1 of 2 types of plastics and studied grossly or by scanning electron microscopy. Arcuate arteries gave rise to a descending colonic rete that surrounded the vein and supplied numerous descending colonic lymph nodes. The rete also supplied the mesocolon and the descending colonic tissue. Short filamentous vessels arising from the rete directly penetrated the mesenteric tenia to supply an intermuscular plexus between the longitudinal and circular muscle layers of the muscularis externa. Larger vessels arising from either side of the rete divided into the long- and short-terminal arteries that supplied an extensive submucosal plexus, which was continuous around the circumference. The submucosal plexus supplied the mucosa, the tunica muscularis, and the serosa. Vessels running centrifugally from the submucosal plexus formed an intermuscular plexus between the longitudinal and circular muscle layers of the muscularis externa. The intermuscular plexus at the mesenteric angle also was supplied by vessels branching from the short-terminal arteries as they penetrated the muscularis externa.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Scanning electron microscopy of vascular architecture in the mucosa of sheep omasal laminae

Three dimensional vascular architecture in the omasal laminae of sheep was studied by scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts. The omasal laminae were equipped with well-developed subepithelial capillary network with various capillary loops and inter-papillar undulations. The capillary loops were more highly developed in the omasal papillae than in the inter-papillar space and more in the oral region than in the aboral. The capillary loops were inconspicuous in the inter-papillar space of the middle and aboral regions and in the omasal papillae of the aboral region. On the other hand, the inter-papillar undulation of the capillary network was more conspicuous in the aboral region than in the other regions of the omasal mucosa. These findings may indicate a regional diversity in the function of the omasal laminae.

Microvascular circulation of the cecum in horses

The microvascular circulation of the cecum was studied in 15 adult horses, using microangiography and light microscopy combined with gross studies and scanning electron microscopy of vascular replicas. After heparinization, the horses were euthanatized and the cecum was transected at the cecocolic junction. Blood was flushed free of the circulation with isotonic NaCl and the cecal lumen was slightly distended. In 6 horses, the vascular system was injected with a modified radiopaque medium and evaluated radiographically. Sections evaluated radiographically were also prepared for histologic examination by standard methods. Eight horses were injected with 1 of 2 types of plastics and studied grossly or by scanning electron microscopy. In 1 additional horse, the lateral and medial arteries were injected with different colored plastic for gross studies. The lateral and medial cecal arteries appear to supply the respective areas of the cecum with minimal mixing of the 2 circulations. The major vascular supply to the cecal apex appeared to be through the medial cecal artery. Both the lateral and medial cecal arteries gave rise to cecal retia, which formed a mesh-like network around the respective veins. Vessels from these retia supplied the cecal tissue and the cecal lymph nodes. The continuation of the retia was through long terminal arteries that coursed around the circumference in the submucosa, forming an extensive submucosal plexus. This plexus supplied both the mucosa, and the tunica muscularis and serosa. Vessels within the longitudinal and circular muscle layers of the muscularis externa ran parallel to the muscle fibers, and consequently, perpendicular to each other.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Arterial segmentation in the spleen of the sheep

Forty six corrosion casts of sheep splenic artery and its intrasplenic tree were studied. Forty spleens (86.96%) showed two segments, 2 spleens (4.35%) revealed three segments and 4 spleens (8.69%) did not demonstrate arterial segmentation.

[Spatial pattern and microvascularization of the ductuli efferentes testis of bulls (Bos taurus)]

The arrangement, origin, course and opening of the ductuli efferents testis of the bull (Bos taurus) were visualized using scanning electron microscopy. The corresponding capillary structure was also described and documented with the help of corrosive microanatomical casts. The number of the ductuli efferents testis of the bull varies narrowly between 12 to 13. Ductuli removed from the surrounding tissue have a length of up to 78 cm. The duct system is composed of linear as well as tortuous parts, permitting division into three distinct segments. Blind ending ductules are very short. We therefore do not see these structures as being associated with spermiostasis. The capillary density as well as the capillary architecture show regional peculiarities. All segments of the ductuli efferents testis are composed of capillaries of the continuous type. The findings indicate that the increased capillary density in the voluminous initial section of the ductuli efferents testis represents the basis for resorptive as well as secretory activities in the bull.

Morphological studies on the vascular architecture in the boar spermatic cord

The morphological features of the testicular artery and the pampiniform plexus in the boar spermatic cord were evaluated by light microscopy, corrosion cast technique combined with scanning electron microscopy and by transmission electron microscopy. The testicular veins could be subdivided into 4 types according to their perivascular elements and their location to the testicular artery. Type I vein consisted of large veins and gave rise to type II and III veins. Type II vein was composed of a single layer of veins and ran along the testicular artery, while type III vein consisted of several layers of veins and was located between type II veins. Type IV vein, which was regarded as a venous portal system, was composed of small muscular and pericytic venules and was located in the tunica adventitia of type II vein and the testicular artery. Occasionally, type IV vein penetrated deep into the tunica media of the testicular artery, accompanied by a fenestrated endothelium in its thin portion. The direct arterio-venous anastomosis between the pampiniform plexus and the testicular artery was not found. Type IV vein was considered to be the most important vessel in reducing the capacity of the barrier between the testicular artery and the veins (type II and III). It is, therefore, suggested that type IV venous network may play a role in transferring the substances between the artery and the veins.
