Abstract
Protists in general comprise about one-third of the parasitic species infecting arthropod vectors, the role of free-living and epibiotic ciliates on mosquitoes have been insufficiently studied either due to their low pathogenicity or facultative parasites. Studies have shown that exposure of Paramecium ciliate protists, like Vorticella species, to first instar Culex nigripalpus Theobald, larvae delayed larval development and reduced biomass of emerged adults due to competition for food sources like bacteria and other microbes essential to mosquito growth and survival. Thus, we report on the capacity of a Vorticella sp. protist's ability to cross-infect host species and parasitize multiple mosquito larvae. The unique adapted behavior with the ability to remain on the exuviae in tree hole habitats provide a novel delivery system to develop products for target species-specific mosquitocides, larvicides, or viricides to be applied and sustained in aquatic systems.

Abstract
The genus Rhabdostyla is one of the oldest of the family Epistylididae, it was described over 120 years ago and has more than 40 species considered valid. This group went through several systematic changes throughout its existence and due to the lack of taxonomic information, said to be essential, for most species that compose it, some of these changes are still questioned. In order to better understand and validate the species and relationships identified for this genus, the present work makes a brief review for the genus Rhabdostyla and its related genera, Opisthostyla and Orborhabdostyla. A 18S-rDNA phylogenetic analysis was also performed to understand the relationship between these groups. As a result of this review, 45 diagnoses were compiled and reorganized for the current model, accompanied by new graphical representations for the species considered valid for the genus Rhabdostyla and its associates. The major changes that the genus underwent, such as synonymy and separation to a new genus, were discussed in light of new phylogenetic information, but despite this, other information is still needed for a better validation of these changes.

Abstract
Paramecium (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea) is a good model to study ciliate biogeography. Extensive sampling mainly in northern hemisphere has led to 16 valid morphological species description thus far. However, a majority of hard-to-reach regions, including South East Asia, are underinvestigated. Our study combined traditional morphological and molecular approaches to reveal the biodiversity of Paramecium in Thailand from more than 110 samples collected in 10 provinces. Representatives of seven morphological species were identified from our collection, including the rare species, such as P. gigas and P. jenningsi. Additionally, we detected five different sibling species of the P. aurelia complex, described a new cryptic species P. hiwatashii n. sp. phylogenetically related to P. caudatum, and discovered a potentially new genetic species of the P. bursaria species complex. We also documented a variety of bacterial cytoplasmic symbionts from at least nine monoclonal cultures of Paramecium.

Abstract
The phylum Ciliophora (ciliates) comprises about 2600 symbiotic and over 5500 free-living species. The inclusion of symbiotic ciliates in phylogenetic analyses often challenges traditional classification frameworks due to their morphological adaptions to the symbiotic lifestyle. Conchophthirus is such a controversial obligate endocommensal genus whose affinities to other symbiotic and free-living scuticociliates are still poorly understood. Using uni- and multivariate morphometrics as well as 2D-based molecular and phylogenetic analyses, we attempted to test for the monophyly of Conchophthirus, study the boundaries of Conchophthirus species isolated from various bivalves at mesoscale, and reveal the phylogenetic relationships of Conchophthirus to other scuticociliates. Multidimensional analyses of morphometric and cell geometric data generated the same homogenous clusters, as did phylogenetic analyses based on 144 new sequences of two mitochondrial and five nuclear molecular markers. Conchophthirus is not closely related to 'core' scuticociliates represented by the orders Pleuronematida and Philasterida, as assumed in the past using morphological data. Nuclear and mitochondrial markers consistently showed the free-living Dexiotricha and the mouthless endosymbiotic Haptophrya to be the nearest relatives of Conchophthirus. These three highly morphologically and ecologically dissimilar genera represent an orphan clade from the early radiation of scuticociliates in molecular phylogenies.

Abstract
A review of the ciliate (Ciliophora) species associated to rotifers as epibionts and endoparasites is presented, based on published records. Thirty rotifer species from 12 genera are known as hosts of ciliates. Among ciliates, one species of class Suctorea and 14 species of class Oligohymenophorea (12 from subclass Peritrichia, one from Hymenostomatia, and one from Astomatia) have been noted as associated to rotifers. The possible factors responsible for host prevalence of ciliates are discussed.

Abstract
As part of a study to investigate the use of the scuticociliate Orchitophrya stellarum as a biological control for the invasive seastar Asterias amurensis in Australia, we collected prevalence data for O. stellarum from 3 seastar species (A. amurensis, A. rubens, Pisaster ochraceus) between 1996 and 1999 from the Pacific (Australia, Japan, Korea, Canada) and Atlantic (France, Netherlands, Canada) oceans. In the Pacific Ocean, for the first time, we found O. stellarum in male A. amurensis in Korea and female A. amurensis in Japan. The parasite was not detected in the invasive A. amurensis from Australia. There was no significant difference between size of infected and uninfected male seastars, nor a correlation between biased sex ratio and parasite prevalence in populations in the Pacific or Atlantic oceans. Therefore, unlike other studies, we found size and sex ratio in seastar populations in the field are unreliable indicators of parasite impacts. Regular monitoring of infected seastar populations in the field would be useful to better understand how sex ratio varies with parasite prevalence. We recommend laboratory studies under controlled conditions to determine the effect of O. stellarum on seastar populations.

Abstract
Mesanophrys sp. is a parasitic ciliate that invades and destroys the hemocytes of the swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus). In the present study, we employed an in vitro model to elucidate how Mesanophrys sp. destroys crab hemocytes. We also evaluated the relationship between the parasite's density, the destruction rate of the hemocytes, and the rapid proliferation pattern of parasites in host crabs. We found that the survival rate and cell integrity of crab hemocytes decreased with an increase in Mesanophrys sp. density, depicting a negative correlation between hemocyte viability and parasite density. Further analyses revealed that crab hemocytes could resist destruction by a low density (10 ind/mL) of Mesanophrys sp. for a long time (60 h). Mesanophrys sp. and its culture medium (containing the ciliate secretions) destroy the host hemocytes. The natural population growth rate of Mesanophrys sp. decreased with an increase in the parasite density, but the Mesanophrys sp. density did not affect the generation time of the parasites. In summary, Mesanophrys sp. can destroy crab hemocytes, and the degree of destruction is directly proportional to the parasite density. The resistance of crab hemocytes to Mesanophrys sp. decreased gradually with an increase in the parasite density.

Abstract
Miamiensis avidus is a parasitic pathogen that causes scuticociliatosis, a severe and often lethal marine infection that affects marine fishes worldwide, including olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in Korea. This parasite infects all size groups of flounder year-round, causing recurring mortalities and huge economic losses to the Korean flounder industry each year. However, few efforts have been made to implement effective remedial measures to control this parasite. Therefore, our study sought to develop a chitosan microsphere (MS)-encapsulated inactivated vaccine (IMa + chitosan) for oral delivery (adsorbed in feed) to flounder fingerlings and assess its protective efficacy at different modalities via three in vivo experimental trials. Immunisation trial-1 was conducted to determine the effective concentration of chitosan. Our findings indicated that an IMa + chitosan 0.05 % vaccine formulation was safe and effective in providing moderate protection [46.67%-53.3 % relative percent survival (RPS)] against M. avidus intraperitoneal (IP) injection challenge at two weeks post-vaccination (wpv) compared to the IMa + chitosan 0.01 % and IMa + chitosan 0.005 % vaccines (0%-13.3 % RPS) irrespective of the antigen doses. In trial-2, the IMa + chitosan 0.05 % vaccine elicited similar protective immunity (30.8%-57.1 % RPS) in olive flounder against M. avidus at varying antigen doses (high: 2.38 × 106 cells/fish; low: 1.5 × 105 cells/fish), immunisation periods (2 and 5 wpv), and challenge modes (IP injection and immersion). Furthermore, experimental trial-3 validated the use of chitosan MS as an IMa antigen carrier to improve survivability (41.7 % RPS) in the host by significantly (p < 0.05) upregulating specific anti-M. avidus antibody titres in the fish sera and mucus of the group immunised with IMa-containing chitosan MS. In contrast, non-specific immunomodulatory effects (16.7 % RPS and enhanced mucosal antibody titres) were observed in the group treated with chitosan MS without IMa. Therefore, our findings suggested that oral administration of chitosan MS (0.05 %)-encapsulated IMa vaccine is a promising immunisation strategy against M. avidus that can protect the IMa antigen from digestive degradation, facilitates its targeted delivery to the host immune organs, and helps in orchestrating protective immune induction in olive flounder, thus controlling parasite infection.

Abstract
This article deals with the report of a colonial peritrich ciliate species Epistylis obliqua Sommer, 1951 as epibiont on hydrachnid mite Unionicola minor (Soar 1900) from the freshwater in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The finding of the species is the first after its original description as well as the first finding on a mite which belongs to family Unionicolidae Oudemans, 1909. The systematic position, improved diagnosis and morphometrics characteristic of E. obliqua are presented in the present study.

Abstract
Apocarchesium rosettum and A. arndti were originally discovered in Japan (Lake Biwa) and Germany (River Rhine), respectively. We report the first record of A. arndti in the Danube and provide a detailed description of its colony development. Our findings support the theory of moderate endemicity and reveal a new, smaller zooid type in A. arndti. This zooid remains attached to the colony, connected to the stalk myoneme but lacks an aboral ciliary wreath. Unlike microzooids, it is incapable of leaving the colony. It exhibits a less spherical shape and arises from the fourth division of the colony-founder cell. Although its specific function is unknown, it is hypothesized to support the stalk dish. Our results have significant implications for understanding the systematics of vorticellids, suggesting their ancestral nature as colonial organisms characterized by a helically contracting stalk myoneme. Furthermore, the exclusive retention of the stalk myoneme by the parental cell after binary fission may serve as a synapomorphy for the Vorticellidae. We provide a descriptive analysis of the ecological environment and microhabitat of A. arndti in the Danube, revealing its preference for well-developed, detritus-rich biofilms during summer, absence in late winter and spring, emergence during peak summer, and subsequent decline until mid-winter.

Abstract
Specimens of two species of Kinorhyncha, Setaphyes dentatus and S. kielensis, were collected in 1988, 1998, and 2016 at two intertidal sites on the island of Sylt, North Sea, and investigated as preserved material by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy for their epibionts. One species of Acinetidae (Suctoria), one species of Vaginicolidae (Peritrichia), and two species of bacteria were traced. The most abundant ciliate species with 705 specimens was Trematosoma husselae sp. nov. occurring with 146 specimens on a basibiont, mainly on the ventral side and here especially on segment 1. Cothurnia buetschlii was found as 14 specimens. Trematosoma husselae sp. nov. agreed with T. amphiasci and T. pusilla in the calyciform shape of the lorica and with most species in the general size of the body except for the much larger T. constricta and T. pusilla. The new species could be distinguished from T. amphiasci, T. complatana, T. constricta, T. falcata, T. ovata, and T. pusilla by the short length of its stalk and agreed with T. bocqueti and T. rotunda in this character. Cothurnia buetschlii was redescribed for the first time after the descriptions by Zelinka (1914, 1928).

Abstract
The research on anaerobic ciliates, to date, has mainly been focused on representatives of obligately anaerobic classes such as Armophorea or Plagiopylea. In this study, we focus on the anaerobic representatives of the subclass Scuticociliatia, members of the class Oligohymenophorea, which is mainly composed of aerobic ciliates. Until now, only a single anaerobic species, Cyclidium porcatum (here transferred to the genus Anaerocyclidium gen. nov.), has been described both molecularly and morphologically. Our broad sampling of anoxic sediments together with cultivation and single cell sequencing approaches have shown that scuticociliates are common and diversified in anoxic environments. Our results show that anaerobic scuticociliates represent a distinctive evolutionary lineage not closely related to the family Cyclidiidae (order Pleuronematida), as previously suggested. However, the phylogenetic position of the newly recognized lineage within the subclass Scuticociliatia remains unresolved. Based on molecular and morphological data, we establish the family Anaerocyclidiidae fam. nov. to accommodate members of this clade. We further provide detailed morphological descriptions and 18S rRNA gene sequences for six new Anaerocyclidium species and significantly broaden the described diversity of anaerobic scuticociliates.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the protective efficacy of a trivalent oral vaccine containing chitosan-PLGA encapsulated inactivated viral haemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), Streptococcus parauberis serotype I and Miamiensis avidus antigens, followed by its oral (incorporated in feed) administration to olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) fingerlings for a period of 15-consecutive days. After 35 days of initial vaccination, three separate challenge studies were conducted at the optimal temperature of the targeted pathogens using an intraperitoneal injection route. RPS analysis revealed moderate protection in the immunized group against all the three pathogens viz., VHSV (53.30% RPS), S. parauberis serotype-I (33.30% RPS), and M. avidus (66.75% RPS), as compared to the respective non-vaccinated challenge (NVC) control group. In addition, the immunized fish demonstrated significantly (p < 0.05) higher specific antibody titres in serum and significant (p < 0.05) upregulation in the transcript levels of immune genes of Igs (IgM, IgT, pIgR), TLRs (TLR 2, TLR 7), cytokines (IL-1β, IL-8) and complement pathway (C3) in the mucosal and systemic tissues than those of NVC control fish, suggesting orchestration of pathogen-specific host immune responses thereby favouring its combativeness against the three pathogens. The expression dynamics of IFN-γ, Mx, caspase 3 genes post VHSV challenge; IFN-γ, TLR 2, caspase 1 genes post S. parauberis serotype I challenge and CD-8α, IL-10, TNF-α genes post M. avidus challenge further substantiates the efficacy of the vaccine in stimulating antiviral, antibacterial and antiparasitic immune responses in the host resulting in their better survival. The findings from the present study reflect that the formulated trivalent oral vaccine incorporating VHSV, S. parauberis serotype I and M. avidus antigens can be a promising prophylactic strategy to prevent the associated disease outbreaks in olive flounder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of the major cultured fish species in Asia including Korea. However, the mass mortality of olive flounder caused by various pathogens leads to huge economic loss. The pathogens that lead to fish mortality include parasites, bacteria, and viruses that can cause various kinds of diseases. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the protein expression patterns in the gills and spleens of olive flounder after artificial infection. We hypothesized that proteomics levels in gills and spleen may be differentially expressed depending on infectious agents. METHODS To investigate the expression pattern of proteins in gills and spleens, olive flounders were experimentally infected with VHSV (virus), S. parauberis (bacteria), or M. avidus (pathogenic ciliate). Proteins were extracted from the gills and spleens of infected olive flounder. We used 2-DE analysis with LC-MS/MS to investigate proteome changes in infected olive flounders. RESULTS The results of the LC-MS/MS analyses showed different protein expression profiles depending on pathogenic sources and target organs. Proteins related to cytoskeletal structure like keratin, calmodulin and actin were mostly expressed in the infected gills. Proteins involved in the metabolism pathway like glycolysis were expressed mainly in the spleens. The protein profiles of S. parauberis and VHSV infection groups had many similarities, but the profile of the M. avidus infection group was greatly different in the gill and spleen. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that measures according to the characteristics of each pathogen are necessary for disease prevention and treatment of farmed fish.

Three freshwater turbellarian species (Dugesia gonocephala, Girardia tigrina, and Polycelis felina), belonging to the order Tricladida, were examined for the presence of ciliates. Living morphology and phylogenetic position of the isolated ciliates were studied using light microscopy and molecular phylogenetic methods. Three ciliate species, all from the highly diverse class Oligohymenophorea, were detected: Haptophrya planariarum from the subclass Astomatia, Urceolaria mitra from the subclass Peritrichia, and Tetrahymena sp. from the subclass Hymenostomatia. Each of these ciliates is specialized for different parts of the turbellarian bodies: H. planariarum lives in the pharynx and rami of the intestine, U. mitra colonizes the body surface, and Tetrahymena sp. attacks open wounds and feeds on the mesenchyme. Astomes and peritrichs isolated from turbellarians are placed deeper in 18S rRNA gene phylogenies than their relatives isolated from annelids and mollusks. On the other hand, Tetrahymena sp. isolated from turbellarians is classified comparatively deeply within the family Tetrahymenidae, suggesting that the phylogeny of tetrahymenids does not correlate with that of their obligate/facultative host groups. Nevertheless, the reconstruction of ancestral traits corroborated the hypothesis that histophagy was already a life history trait of the progenitor of the subclass Hymenostomatia to which Tetrahymena belongs.

Abstract
P. dicentrarchi is one of the most threatening pathogens for turbot aquaculture. This protozoan ciliate is a causative agent of scuticociliatosis, which is a disease with important economic consequences for the sector. Neither vaccines nor therapeutic treatments are commercially available to combat this infection. Numerous antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have demonstrated broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and even tumor cells; an example is Nk-lysin (Nkl), which is an AMP belonging to the saposin-like protein (SAPLIP) family with an ability to interact with biological membranes. Following the recent characterization of turbot Nkl, an expression plasmid encoding Nkl was constructed and an anti-Nkl polyclonal antibody was successfully tested. Using these tools, we demonstrated that although infection did not clearly affect nkl mRNA expression, it induced changes at the protein level. Turbot Nkl had the ability to inhibit proliferation of the P. dicentrarchi parasite both in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, a shortened peptide containing the active core of turbot Nkl (Nkl71-100) was synthesized and showed high antiparasitic activity with a direct effect on parasite viability that probably occurred via membrane disruption. Therefore, the nkl gene may be a good candidate for genetic breeding selection of fish, and either the encoded peptide or its shortened analog is a promising antiparasitic treatment in aquaculture.

Abstract
The present study performed three experiments to establish a practical prevention strategy for the ectoparasitic flagellate Ichthyobodo salmonis and ciliate Trichodina truttae in hatchery-reared juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta using dietary supplementation with oregano essential oil. Experiment 1 showed that a diet supplemented for 3 weeks with 0.02% oregano essential oil significantly prevented infection with I. salmonis and T. truttae in juveniles reared in small tanks. Experiment 2, in outdoor hatchery ponds, demonstrated that the oregano treatment completely prevented I. salmonis infection for 52 days and T. truttae infection for 38 days. Oregano-treated juvenile mortality attributable to infection with these protozoans also decreased to 7.6% of control juvenile mortality, confirming the utility of this treatment in cultured O. keta. Physiological analyses of the oregano-treated juveniles elucidated the treatment's safety in relation to their metabolism, osmoregulation, natural immunity and olfactory responses and also detected carvacrol (a major component of oregano essential oil which shows antimicrobial activity) on the skin. In experiment 3, exposure of the two protozoans to oregano essential oil revealed a weak antiparasitic action on the body surface of the juvenile O. keta. The overall results demonstrate that dietary oregano supplementation is a practical prevention strategy for I. salmonis and T. truttae in hatchery-reared juvenile O. keta and suggest the possibility that its anti-parasitic action is attributable to a component of the oil that emerges onto the skin of the body of the fish.

Abstract
This study for the first time confirmed that eight dominating protozoan species, Cryptomonas erosa, Euglena axyuris, Euglena caudate, Euglena gasterosteus, Euglena acus, Vorticella campanula, Vorticella convallaria and Epistylis lacustris, were the pollution tolerant species at chemical oxygen demand 54-104mg/L. These species cannot be used as indicator for clean water quality as commonly believed. The protozoa can be actively participating in the energy transfer chain between nano-planktonic and higher plants in polluted wetlands.

Abstract
The distribution and coexistence of two unrelated commensals, the chironomid Epoicocladius ephemerae (Kieffer 1924) and ciliate Carchesium polypinum L. 1758, on one host species, Ephemera danica Muller 1764, sampled in two small lowland rivers in 2009, 2010 and 2011, were investigated. We analyzed 288 mayfly specimens from the Bzura River and 101 from the Mroga River. The number of commensals on a single mayfly specimen varied between 0 and 18 chironomids, and from 0 to 46 colonies of ciliates. Prevalences were >48% for chironomids and ∼30% for ciliates, whereas mean intensities were low (4.01±6.04 commensals on one host). The spatial distribution of each commensal species was investigated on different parts of the host body. Neither chironomids nor ciliates infected the whole mayfly body. The co-occurrence of these two commensals was not random and showed a negative association. Chironomids were most frequent on two or three parts of the body (two parts of the abdomen, with gills and without gills, and legs), whereas ciliates were found on two parts (the whole abdomen). Coexistence of the two commensal species led to partitioning of resources that was host body size dependent: small mayflies (optimal size 11.63 mm) were primarily settled by ciliated protozoans while larger specimens (optimal size 28.77 mm) were settled by chironomids.

Abstract
We evaluated the expression profiles of turbot in spleen, liver, and head kidney across five temporal points of the Philasterides dicentrarchi infection process using an 8x15K Agilent oligo-microarray. The microarray included 2,176 different fivefold replicated gene probes designed from a turbot 3' sequenced EST database. We were able to identify 221 differentially expressed (DE) genes (8.1% of the whole microarray), 113 in spleen, 83 in liver, and 90 in head kidney, in at least 1 of the 5 temporal points sampled for each organ. Most of these genes could be annotated (83.0%) and functionally categorized using GO terms (69.1%) after the additional sequencing of DE genes from the 5' end. Many DE genes were related to innate and acquired immune functions. A high proportion of DE genes were organ-specific (70.6%), although their associated GO functions showed notable similarities in the three organs. The most striking difference in functional distribution was observed between the up- and downregulated gene groups. Upregulated genes were mostly associated to immune functions, while downregulated ones mainly involved metabolism-related genes. Genetic response appeared clustered in a few groups of genes with similar expression profiles along the temporal series. The information obtained will aid to understand the turbot immune response and will specifically be valuable to develop strategies of defense to P. dicentrarchi to achieve more resistant broodstocks for turbot industry.

Abstract
Feeding kelp grouper, Epinephelus bruneus (26.1 ± 1.4), with 0%, 0.1%, 1.0%, and 2.0% Kalopanax pictus extract-supplementation diets, for 30 days reduced mortality on being challenged intraperitoneally 100 μl with bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus (2.1 × 10(7) cfu ml(-1)) and ciliate parasite Philasterides dicentrarchi (2.3 × 10(7) ciliates ml(-1)). The red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), haemoglobin, haematocrit, lymphocytes, and monocytes levels significantly increased in kelp grouper fed with all doses of K. pictus-supplementation diets and challenged with bacterium and parasite when compared to control. However, the levels of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), neutrophils, and thrombocytes did not significantly. The phagocytic activity, complement activity, and antiprotease activity did not significantly change in kelp grouper fed with 0.1% K. pictus-supplementation diets and challenged with bacterium and parasite. The respiratory activity, lysozyme activity, bactericidal activity, total protein level, and myeloperoxidase levels significantly increased in kelp grouper fed with all the doses of K. pictus-supplementation diet and challenged with bacterium and parasite. However, α2-macroglobulin level significantly increased with 1.0% diet, but not with 0.1% and 2.0% diets. Therefore this study suggests that 1.0% and 2.0% K. pictus-supplementation diets positively protected and enhanced the immune system in kelp grouper E. bruneus against V. alginolyticus and P. dicentrarchi infection.

Abstract
Biological effects of the biocide zinc pyrithione (Zpt), used in anti-dandruff shampoos and antifouling paints and the agricultural insecticide imidacloprid on Japanese medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) were assessed in experimental rice fields. Both chemicals are toxic to medaka, in particular Zpt, which also causes teratogenic effects such as spinal cord deformities in embryos at very low, sublethal concentrations. Rates of malformation in medaka fry from paddies treated twice a week with anti-dandruff shampoo (0.18-0.37 microL/L each time) over a period of 4 months were within the natural background, perhaps due to the quick dissipation rate of this chemical in the environment. Both Zpt and imidacloprid caused stress syndrome in juvenile medaka, with fish from Zpt-shampoo fields having a significantly lower weight to body length ratio than those from control fields. As it often happens with stressed fish, a massive infestation by a Trichodina ectoparasite was observed in medaka from imidacloprid fields. However, despite their high stress levels, fish from the Zpt fields did not suffer such infestation, supposedly because the disinfectant action of this biocide.

Abstract
Philasterides dicentrarchi is a histiophagous ciliate that causes severe losses in turbot and sea bass farming. This study investigated the in vitro efficacy against P. dicentrarchi of 85 newly synthesized compounds and 12 commercial compounds, of which 2 are fluoroquinolones (norfloxacine and lomefloxacine) with known antibacterial activity. Seventeen of the newly synthesized compounds (2 naphthyridines, 2 pyridothienodiazines and 13 pyridothienotriazines) and the fluoroquinolone norfloxacin showed good activity. The most promising compound was the pyridothienotriazine 12k, with activity similar to that of the salicylanilides niclosamide and oxiclozanide (MLC 0.8 mg l(-1) in PBS, 1.5 mg l(-1) in seawater; MLC = minimum 24 h lethal concentration).

Abstract
Philasterides dicentrarchi is an opportunistic histiophagous ciliate parasite causing systemic scuticociliatosis in cultured turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). This study investigated the effects of inoculation with live or killed trophozoites of this ciliate (plus 3% thioglycollate) on the in vitro phagocytic activity and respiratory-burst responses of inflammatory peritoneal leucocytes obtained from the fish thus treated. The phagocytic activity of leucocytes from fish inoculated with killed P. dicentrarchi was higher in the presence than in the absence of infected turbot serum (ITS). The effect of ITS was smaller in fish inoculated with live P. dicentrarchi, indicating modulation of the opsonic activity of ITS. Inoculation with live ciliates led to a significant increase in subsequent in vitro extracellular ROS production, but only when normal turbot serum (NTS) or ITS was included in the assay medium. Inclusion of live P. dicentrarchi in the medium abolished this increase, suggesting ROS-scavenging activity. Inoculation with live P. dicentrarchi led to a significant decline in subsequent in vitro intracellular ROS production; when NTS was included in the medium, there was a significant increase in intracellular ROS production, but no such increase was observed when ITS was included in the medium. Inoculation with live P. dicentrarchi alone did not increase subsequent in vitro NO? production in response to LPS; a significant increase was observed when NTS or ITS was included in the assay medium, but this increase was not affected by prior inoculation with P. dicentrarchi. These results suggest that the amphizoic nature of this parasite may reflect the ease with which it can develop mechanisms of evasion of the host immune response.

Abstract
The morphology and reproduction of Trichodina branchicola n.sp. are described. Its total diameter is 30–54μ, and its height is 20–36μ,; the diameter of the striated ring is 19–33μ, and the diameter of the denticulate ring 10–20μ. There are 20–26 denticles in the ring, with 6–8 striations to each denticle. The denticles measure 1·5–2μ, in thickness, 3·5μ in length, each with a broad outer hook 2·3μ long and an inner ray 3·2μ long. The aboral cilia are fused at their base to form a complete membranelle.This organism is found on the gills of the following marine fishes at Plymouth: Ciliata mustela, Gaidopsaurus tricirratus, Cottus bubalis, Spinachia spinachia, Blennius pholis, B. guttorugine, Trigla lucerna and Pleuronectes platessa.The genus Vauchomia Mueller 1938 is regarded as a synonym of Trichodina.
