Comparing the diagnostic ability of inflammatory markers in metabolic syndrome

BACKGROUND

Chronic low-grade inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although some studies have demonstrated that several standard inflammatory markers provide diagnostic value for MetS, few studies have compared the diagnostic ability of various inflammatory markers. We demonstrated the diagnostic ability of several inflammatory markers in detecting MetS.

METHODS

Complement component 3 (C3), C4, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), leukocyte count, neutrophil, lymphocyte and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) concentrations were measured in 6312 participants living in Tianjin, China. MetS was defined according to American Heart Association criteria. Adjusted logistic models were used to assess associations between inflammatory markers and MetS. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed to determine the diagnostic values of inflammatory markers for MetS.

RESULTS

The adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) of MetS for the highest inflammatory markers (C3, leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte) quintile, when compared to the lowest quintile were 2.68 (2.12-3.38), 2.53 (2.05-3.11), 1.31 (1.06-1.62) and 1.94 (1.60-2.37), respectively. ROC analysis showed that the optimal cut-off values were 101.0mg/dl for C3 (Area under the ROC curve (AUC)=0.68), 5.41×1000cells/mm³ for leukocyte (AUC=0.63), 3.20×1000cells/mm³ for neutrophil (AUC=0.60) and 1.82×1000cells/mm³ for lymphocyte (AUC=0.62). No significant association was observed between the other inflammatory markers and MetS.

CONCLUSIONS

Among the inflammatory markers assessed in this population, C3 has the strongest diagnostic value in detecting MetS. Further studies are encouraged to determine the efficacy of applying C3 to diagnosis and treatment in the clinical setting.

Brain iron deposition analysis using susceptibility weighted imaging and its association with body iron level in patients with mild cognitive impairment

The aim of the present study was to analyze brain and body iron levels among patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and normal controls (NCs). A total of 90 participants (30 MCI, 30 AD, 30 NC) were enrolled. Brain iron content was quantified using susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI). Phase values were used to calculate bilateral iron content in the hippocampus (HP), substantia nigra, red nucleus (RN), dentate nucleus (DN), caudate nucleus (CN), globus pallidus (GP), putamen (PUT), frontal white matter, temporal cortex (TC), and parietal cortex. Body iron indices, including serum iron, serum transferrin, ferritin and total iron binding capacity, were measured. Phase values of the left (L)-DN, L-CN, and bilateral PUT in the MCI group were significantly lower compared with NC group. Phase values of the right (R)-RN, bilateral DN, and bilateral PUT in the AD group were significantly lower compared with the MCI group. Phase values of the bilateral HP, DN, RN, CN, GP, PUT, and L-TC in the AD group were significantly lower compared with the NC group. Serum ferritin levels in the MCI and AD groups were significantly lower compared with the NC group. Only serum iron in the AD group was positively associated with iron content in the R-HP. Brain iron deposition and body iron levels both increased in MCI and AD patients, however, excessive brain iron accumulation may have no association with body iron level. SWI was particularly effective at recognizing the presence of brain iron in the MCI and AD groups.

[Surveillance for HIV infection in MSM selected through respondent driven sampling in Beijing, 2005-2012]

Objective: To understand the HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) and discuss the feasibility of respondent driven sampling (RDS) as a tool to conduct long term HIV surveillance in MSM in Beijing. Methods: From 2005 to 2012 RDS was used to recruit MSM for face-to-face interview with structured questionnaire to collect their demographic characteristics and HIV risk-related behavior. Blood samples were collected from them for HIV test. Results: A total of 427, 540, 607, 614, 616, 602, 579 and 600 MSM were surveyed, respectively, from 2005 to 2012. The HIV infection prevalence increased from 4.2%(95%CI: 1.9-7.0) in 2005 to 10.1% (95%CI: 7.2-13.2) in 2012 (P=0.02). Meanwhile, HIV prevalence substantially increased among MSM aged >25 years, in floating population and with lower education level (≤high school), from 6.4%(95%CI: 2.2-9.5), 3.3%(95%CI: 1.8-5.4) and 5.5% (95%CI: 2.2-8.9) in 2005 to 7.6% (95%CI: 5.4-10.3, P=0.04), 10.7% (95% CI: 7.8-14.6, P=0.04) and 10.4% (95% CI:7.2-14.3, P=0.04) in 2012, respectively. Moreover, the HIV infection prevalence in MSM aged ≤25 years old and with higher education level (>high school) increased from 1.7%(95%CI: 0.4-3.1) in 2009 and 1.1%(95%CI: 0.2-1.7) in 2007 to 13.7%(95%CI: 7.2-20.4) and 9.1%(95%CI: 4.7-13.8) in 2012, respectively, the differences were not significant. Furthermore, the HIV infection prevalence in MSM who had 2-9 male sex partners in the last six months increased from 4.0% (95% CI: 1.0-8.0) in 2005 to 12.6% (95% CI: 8.7-16.7) in 2012 (P=0.02). Conclusions: Studies have shown that RDS is an effective and feasible sampling method for long term HIV surveillance in MSM. The HIV infection prevalence in MSM in Beijing increased from 2005 to 2012, especially among those with older age, in floating population and with lower educational level. More attention should be paid to MSM with younger age and with higher educational level.

Unveiling Structurally Engineered Carrier Dynamics in Hybrid Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskite Thin Films toward Controllable Emission

Quasi-two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites driving carrier self-separation have rapidly advanced the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, insightful understanding of carrier dynamics in the perovskites is still inadequate. The distribution of multiple perovskite phases, crucial for carrier separation, is controversial. Here we report a systematic study on carrier dynamics of spin-coated (C₆H₅CH₂CH₂NH₃)₂(CH₃NH₃)_n-1Pb_nI_3n+1 (n = 3 and 5) perovskite thin films. Efficient electrons transfer from small-n to large-n perovskite phases, and holes transfer reversely with time scales from ∼0.3 to 30.0 ps. The multiple perovskite phases are arranged perpendicularly to substrate from small to large n and also coexist randomly in the same horizontal planes. Further, the carrier separation dynamics is tailored by engineering the crystalline structure of the perovskite film, which leads to controllable emission properties. These results have important significance for the design of optoelectronic devices from solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and so forth.

Simultaneous Enantioselective Determination of the Chiral Fungicide Prothioconazole and Its Major Chiral Metabolite Prothioconazole-Desthio in Food and Environmental Samples by Ultraperformance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

An efficient and sensitive chiral analytical method was established for the determination of the chiral fungicide prothioconazole and its major chiral metabolite prothioconazole-desthio in agricultural and environmental samples using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The optical rotation and absolute configuration of enantiomers were identified by optical rotation detector and electronic circular dichroism spectra. The elution order of prothioconazole and its chiral metabolite enantiomers was R-(+)-prothioconazole-desthio, S-(-)-prothioconazole-desthio, R-(-)-prothioconazole, and S-(+)-prothioconazole. The mean recoveries from the samples was 71.8-102.0% with intraday relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.3-11.9% and interday RSDs of 0.9-10.6%. The formation of prothioconazole-desthio was studied in soil under field conditions and enantioselective degradation was observed for chiral prothioconazole. Remarkable enantioselective degradation was observed: R-prothioconazole degraded preferentially with EF values from 0.48 to 0.37. Although prothioconazole-desthio is the most remarkably bioactive metabolite, no obvious enantioselective behavior was observed in soil. These results may help to systematically evaluate prothioconazole and its metabolites in food and environmental safety.

Tannerella forsythia and coating color on the tongue dorsum, and fatty food liking associate with fat accumulation and insulin resistance in adult catch-up fat

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

We aimed to determine the alteration of Tannerella forsythia and coating color on the dorsal tongue, and fatty food liking in catch-up fat in adult (CUFA), as well as the probable associations between fat accumulation, insulin resistance (IR) and these changes.

SUBJECTS/METHODS

T. forsythia on the tongue dorsum, fatty food liking, fat accumulation and insulin sensitivity were investigated in CUFA humans and rats, and tongue-coating color was observed in CUFA individuals. We further determined the changes of fatty food liking, fat accumulation and IR in T. forsythia-infected rodents by oral lavage.

RESULTS

Increases in fat accumulation, IR, percentage of subjects with yellow tongue coating and that with T. forsythia detected were observed in CUFA individuals. Additionally, the fat ranking scores were significantly lower and the hedonic ratings of low-fat options of sampled food were lower, while the ratings of high-fat options were remarkably higher in CUFA subjects. Additionally, T. forsythia level elevated in CUFA rats, and fatty food liking, fat accumulation and IR increased in CUFA and T. forsythia-infected animals, with the increases in T. forsythia infection and fatty food liking preceding the occurrence of fat accumulation and IR.

CONCLUSIONS

T. forsythia and yellow coating on the dorsal tongue and fatty food liking associate fat accumulation and IR in CUFA. Moreover, we tentatively put forward that T. forsythia, which is very important in yellow tongue-coating microbiota, and its consequent increases in fatty food liking, might be crucial in the development of fat accumulation and IR in CUFA.

Evaluation of the Molecular Structural Parameters of Normal Rice Starch and Their Relationships with Its Thermal and Digestion Properties

The molecular structural parameters of six normal rice starches with different amylose contents were investigated through their iodine absorption spectra and gel permeation chromatography of fully branched and debranched starches. The thermal and digestion properties of starches were also determined and their relationships with molecular structural parameters were analyzed. Results showed that the molecular structural parameters of maximum absorption wavelength, blue value (BV), optical density 620 nm/550 nm (OD 620/550), amylose, intermediate component, and amylopectin, including its short branch-chains, long branch-chains, and branching degree, had high correlation in different determining methods. The intermediate component of starch was significantly positively related to amylose and negatively related to amylopectin, and the amylopectin branching degree was significantly positively related to amylopectin content and negatively related to amylose content. The gelatinization temperatures and enthalpy of native starch were significantly positively related to BV, OD 620/550, and amylose content and negatively related to amylopectin short branch-chains. The gelatinization temperatures and enthalpy of retrograded starch were significantly negatively related to amylopectin branching degree. The digestions of gelatinized and retrograded starches were significantly negatively related to the BV, OD 620/550, amylose, and intermediate component and positively related to amylopectin and its short branch-chains and branching degree.

The down-regulation of TAPP2 inhibits the migration of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and predicts favorable outcome

Tandem pH domain-containing proteins TAPP1 and TAPP2 are adaptor proteins that specifically bind to phosphatidylinositol-3,4-bisphosphate, or PI(3,4)P2, a product of phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3K). Although PI3K enzymes have multiple functions in cell biology, including cell migration, the functions of PI (3, 4) P2 and its binding proteins are not well understood. Previously studies found that TAPP2 is highly expressed in primary leukemic B cells that have strong migratory capacity. However, the function and underlying mechanisms of TAPP2 in ESCC remain largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the level of TAPP2 in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and in corresponding adjacent non-tumor tissues by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blot analyses. TAPP2 protein level was increased in ESCC tissues compared with corresponding adjacent non-tumor tissues. In vitro experiments showed that under-expression of TAPP2 reduced ESCC cell TE1 migration by wound-healing assays and transwell migration assays, and it was concurrent with the decreased expression of the phosphorylation of AKT. Taken together, these findings suggested that TAPP2 serves as oncogenic gene in ESCC and may serve as a new target for ESCC therapy.

[The value of serum human tumor protein P53 in colorectal cancer combined diagnosis and postoperative monitoring]

Objective: The aim of this paper is to investigate the application value of serum human tumor protein P53 (TP53) in the diagnosis and postoperative monitoring of colorectal cancer. Methods: One hundred and fifteen patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed without colorectal cancer and without surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and total of 158 patients with colorectal benign disease and 182 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. The levels of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199) were detected by electrochemiluminescence assay. The expression of TP53 was analyzed by ELISA. Fourth-one patients with colorectal cancer were detected with one day before operation and the first seven days after operation. The expression of CEA, CA199 and TP53 was analyzed by ROC curve. The results were compared with those of CEA and CA199 diagnostic value. Results: The medians of the levels of TP53 in patients with colorectal cancer patients, colorectal benign, and healthy subjects are 316.0(24.6, 940.8 ) , 9.8(3.7, 30.1 ) and 1.9(1.4, 2.5 ) μg/L (H=260.161, P<0.01), respectively. The level of TP53 in patients with colorectal cancer was significantly higher than that in colorectal benign and healthy subjects. The levels of serum TP53 in patients with colorectal cancer show great discrepancies in different TNM stages, different tumor location, depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05) , but no difference in sex, age, and tumor growth type. The levels of TP53 in the same patient is 711.5(354.9, 1 068.0) μg/L in the first seven days after operation, significantly decreased when compared to it in the one day before the operation with the value of 952.6 (419.7, 1485.4) μg/L (Z=-1.989, P<0.05). The difference was statistically significant, and CEA, CA199 were not statistically significant. And the sensitivity (79.1%) and specificity (81.8%) of TP 53 were significantly higher than those of CEA (39.1%, 70.3%) and CA199 (47.8%, 69.1%). If TP53 was combined with CEA and CA199, sensitivity (86.1%) and specificity (87.9%) can be significantly improved, in which the area of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.924. Conclusions: Serum TP53 has a certain positive significance for the diagnosis, postoperative monitoring of colorectal cancer. Combined detection with CEA and CA199 can improve the sensitivity and specificity, implicating good clinical application value.

Transperineal cryotherapy for unresectable muscle invasive bladder cancer: preliminary experience with 7 male patients

BACKGROUND

Radical cystectomy (RC) with pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) and urinary diversion (UD) is considered the standard treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). In a part of patients, RC procedure is aborted due to unresectable disease, other followed treatment like systemic chemotherapy, radiotherapy or cryotherapy may be a better option. The aim of present study was to report the preliminary results of transperineal cryotherapy for unresectable muscle invasive bladder cancer.

METHODS

From January 2011 to August 2013, 7 male patients with pT4b unresectable bladder cancer underwent bilateral ureterocutaneostomy. Two performed a pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND). Then primary transperineal cryosurgery for preserved bladder at the guidance of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) was performed. All patients underwent a dual freeze-thaw cycle using third-generation cryotechnology with ultrathin 17-gauge cryoneedles. Computer tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance image (MRI)were performed at 3 month intervals after cryosurgery to determine whether progression or recurrence occurred.

RESULTS

All cryosurgery was performed successfully, mean operation time was 76.43 ± 25.12 min (range 50-120 min), mean blood loss was 19.29 ± 15.92 ml (range 5-50 ml). Mean hospital stay was 3.86 ± 1.68 day (range 2-7 days). No operative related deaths occurred. Four patients dead due to the metastasis disease at the follow up time of 8, 15, 18 and 37 months, respectively. Six patients received postoperative therapy, of whom 5 patients were treated with combined chemoradiation, and the other one received chemotherapy alone. The progression free survival (PFS) of the 7 patients was 22.00 ± 14.61 months (range 3-40 months). The one, two and three year overall survival (OS) was 85.7%, 57.1% and 42.9%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that cryosurgery combination with chemoradiotherapy provide a safe and effective alternative method for unresectable pT4b bladder cancer. Longer follow-up is necessary to determine the sustained efficacy.

[Differential expression and clinical significance of calretinin in total colonic aganglionosis]

Objective: To evaluate the differential calretinin immunostaining in different segments of total colonic aganglionosis and its utility in the diagnosis. Methods: Nine specimens including ileum and colon segments were obtained from 9 patients with total colonic aganglionosis (TCA), from 2010 to 2016 year, in Wuhan Children's Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Another 9 ganglionic specimens including the same segments from patients with non-Hirschsprung disease (non-HD) patients were collected as control. All cases were immunostained with calretinin. The patterns of calretinin immunostaining were observed, and morphometric analysis of each sample was performed by image analysis program (Image-Pro-Plus). The mean absorbance was evaluated by calculating the areas of the lamina propria occupied by the positively stained area of the calretinin at high power field. Results: The same pattern of calretinin immunostaining was seen in ganglionic ileum and ganglionic colon segments, with staining seen in intrinsic nerves fibers (INF), and in granular aggregates in the lamina propria and muscularis mucosae. There was no significant difference in the numbers of calretinin-positive INF from the ganglionic segments. In contrast, the number of calretinin-positive INF and granular aggregates in aganglionic segments were significantly lower than those in the ganglionic group (P<0.01). In the ileum transitional zone, scattered calretinin staining was observed, and the amount of calretinin-positive INF was significantly lower than those in the proximal segment of ganlionic ileum (P<0.01). Conclusions: Since there is significant different expression of calretinin among the different segments from TCA, calretinin immunostaining has potential value in detecting TCA. It could be an important adjunctive method in detecting TCA in the future.

[The effects of tympanoplasty on improvements of hearing and tinnitus for chronic otitis media patients with tinnitus]

Objective:The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation of hearing and tinnitus improvement levels in chronic otitis media (COM) patients after tympanoplasty.Method:Thirty-five cases with COM, accompanied with tinnitus on the affected side or undefined sides, were enrolled and accepted for tympanoplasty between May 2015 and Dec 2016. Audiologic evaluation by pure tone audiometry and assessment of Tinnitus Handicap Inventory scores were conducted in pre-operation and 3 months post-operation. The mean air conduction (AC), boneconduction (BC), air-bone gap (ABG) at 500, 1 000, 2 000 and 4 000 Hz was calculated. THI scores were recorded and analyzed.Result:All the patients healed well and the felthearing was improved and tinnitus symptoms alleviated. There was a significant difference between post-operative THI score (15.0±5.6) and pre-operative score (21.2±7.4), t= 7.8, P< 0.01. Significant differenceswerealso found in comparison of pre-operative AC (41.6±9.9)dBHL and post-operative AC(32.5±10.0)dBHL, t= 5.9, P< 0.01, pre-operative ABG (27.0±7.4)dBHL and post-operative ABG (18.3±7.7)dBHL,t= 6.5, P< 0.01. However, the value of BC in the pre-operation (14.5±5.9)dBHL was almost the same as that in post-operation(13.9±6.0)dBHL, t= 1.2, P> 0.05. Hearing improve levels aboutAC and ABG were positively correlated with the remission degree of tinnitus post-operatively (t= 0.9, P< 0.01).Conclusion:Patients accompanied with tinnitus experienced a remarkableremission in tinnitus and recoveryin hearing levelfollowed bytympanoplasty.Tympanoplasty was a positive treatment for relievingtinnitus in COM patients.

[Correlation between self-reported gingival bleeding and type 2 diabetes mellitus in aged ≥18 years adults in China]

Objective: To understand the correlation between self-reported gingival bleeding and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in adults in China. Methods: The database of China' s 2010 Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance (CCDRFS) survey among people aged ≥18 years was used to analyze the demographic characteristics of subjects with self-reporting gingival bleeding and the prevalence of major chronic diseases among adults. Correlation and interaction analyses were conducted on the relationships between frequent gingival bleeding and T2DM, hypertension and dyslipidemia, and interaction of age and gingival bleeding, age and hypertension, age and dyslipidemia, age and gender on the prevalence of T2DM. Results: Among 93 647 adults surveyed, 87.4% were in Han ethnic group. The incidence of frequent gingival bleeding was higher in females (63.6%) than in males (36.4%). The incidence of frequent gingival bleeding was highest (30.1%) in adults with middle school education level. Among the adults aged 45-60 years, 12.8%(2 839/22 179) had T2MD but no gingival bleeding, 15.6% (163/1 044) had both frequent gingival bleeding and T2DM, frequent gingival bleeding was correlated with T2DM (OR=1.29, 95%CI: 1.08-1.54) and the interaction with age had influence on T2DM (P<0.005). In males, frequent gingival bleeding was correlated with T2DM (OR=1.30, 95% CI: 1.08-1.56, P=0.005). In hypertension group, frequent gingival bleeding was correlated with T2DM (OR=1.25, 95% CI: 1.07-1.46), and interaction of hypertension and gingival bleeding had influence on T2DM (P<0.05). Conclusions: The positive correlation between frequent gingival bleeding and T2DM was observed in adults surveyed, and the interaction of age and hypertension had influence on prevalence of T2DM. Frequent gingival bleeding was correlated with T2DM in males either.

[The effects of different tidal volume ventilation on right ventricular function in critical respiratory failure patients]

Objective: To observe and explore the effects of different tidal volume (VT) ventilation on right ventricular (RV) function in patients with critical respiratory failure. Methods: Consecutive respiratory failure patients who were treated with invasive ventilator over 24 h in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University from June to December in 2015 were enrolled in this study.Clinical data including patients' vital signs, ventilator parameters and RV echocardiography were collected within 6 h (D0), day1(D1), day2 (D2) and day3 (D3) after ventilation started.According to the VT, patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) were assigned to low VT group [S6, ≤6 ml/kg predicted body weight (PBW)] and high VT group (L6, >6 ml/kg PBW), while non-ARDS patients were also assigned to low VT group (S8, ≤8 ml/kg PBW) and high VT group (L8, >8 ml/kg PBW). Results: A total of 84 patients were enrolled in this study.44.2% ARDS patients and 58.5% non-ARDS patients were in low VT groups.After ventilation, tricuspid annulus plane systolic excursion(TAPSE)decreased progressively in S6 [from 18.30(16.70, 20.70) mm to 17.55(15.70, 19.50) mm, P=0.001], L6 [from 19.50(17.00, 21.00) mm to 16.30(15.00, 18.00) mm P=0.001], S8[from 18.00(16.00, 21.00) mm to 16.50(15.50, 18.00) mm, P=0.001] and L8 [from 19.00(17.50, 21.50) mm to 16.35(15.15, 17.00) mm, P=0.001] groups.However, TAPSE decreased less in small VT groups (S6 and S8) than those of in large VT groups (S8 and L8) without significant differences.There were not statistical differences between different VT groups in terms of ventilation days, including right ventricle area/left ventricle area (RV(area)/LV(area)), TAPSE, peak mitral flow velocity of the early rapid filling wave (E), peak mitral flow velocity of the late rapid filling wave (A), early diastolic velocity of the tricuspid annulus (e'), pulmonary artery systolic pressure, inferior vena cava diameter (all P>0.05). Compared to L6 group, low VT (S6 group) resulted in decreased mortality at 28 days [1/19 vs 37.5%(9/24), P=0.014]. There were not statistical differences between different VT groups in terms of ventilation days, length of intensive care unit stay, length of hospital stay (all P>0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that VT could be the independent factor of TAPSE (OR=1.104, 95%CI 0.100-1.003, P=0.049). Conclusions: Positive pressure mechanical ventilation resulted in RV systolic dysfunction .Lower VT may have the protective effect on RV function. High expression of EphA4 is associated with invasion and lymph node metastasis in colorectal carcinomas

Eph receptors and ephrin ligands have been implicated in development of embryo, especially in vascular and nervous system. Increasing evidence suggests that Eph/ephrin signaling plays important roles in carcinogenesis. EphA4 is a member of Eph receptors and its role has been found in development of nerve and in tumorigenesis. Till now, EphA4 expression and its clinical significance in colorectal carcinoma have not been well investigated. In the present study, a set of 102 colorectal carcinoma tissue specimens were subjected to immunohistochemistry by using a specific polycolonal antibody for EphA4. Expression of EphA4 protein was more often detected in colorectal carcinoma than in normal mucosa (P<0.001). High expression of EphA4 protein in colorectal carcinomas was positively associated with tumor size (P=0.008, r_s =0.260), depth of invasion (P=0.004, r_s =0.286), lymph node metastasis (P=0.013, r_s =0.244), and TNM stage (P=0.005, r_s =0.279), and was negatively associated with age of patients (P=0.027, r_s =-0.219). No significant relationship between expression of EphA4 and sex and tumor location was found. The survival analyses showed that patients whose carcinoma exhibited high expression of EphA4 had a poor outcome (P=0.006). Our results suggest that EphA4 play a role in the invasion and lymph node metastasis of colorectal carcinoma. The EphA4 protein expression level may be used as a potential prognostic marker in colorectal carcinoma. Furthermore, the EphA4 gene may provide a novel target for therapy of colorectal carcinoma.

Curative effect of Jin'gangteng capsule combined with Kangfuxiaoyan suppository in the treatment of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease

This paper aims to analyze the curative effect of Jin'gangteng capsule combined with Kangfuxiaoyan suppository in the treatment of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. 97 patients with chronic pelvic inflammatory disease admitted to our hospital from June 2015 to June 2016 were selected and randomly divided into observation group and control group. Patients in control group were treated with Kangfuxiaoyan suppository and patients in the observation group were treated with Jin'gangteng capsule combined with kangfuxiaoyan suppository treatment. The curative effect between the two groups was compared. The scores of symptoms and signs in the observation group after treatment were lower than those in the control group. The total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, and there was significant difference between the two groups, P<0.05. Jin'gangteng capsule combined with Kangfuxiaoyan suppository in the treatment of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease can improve the treatment efficiency and promote the rapid and effective relief of clinical symptoms and signs.

A magnetic topological semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y, z < 0.1)

Weyl (WSMs) evolve from Dirac semimetals in the presence of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or space-inversion symmetry. The WSM phases in TaAs-class materials and photonic crystals are due to the loss of space-inversion symmetry. For TRS-breaking WSMs, despite numerous theoretical and experimental efforts, few examples have been reported. In this Article, we report a new type of magnetic semimetal Sr_1-yMn_1-zSb₂ (y, z < 0.1) with nearly massless relativistic fermion behaviour (m^∗ =  0.04 - 0.05m₀, where m₀ is the free-electron mass). This material exhibits a ferromagnetic order for 304 K  <  T  <  565 K, but a canted antiferromagnetic order with a ferromagnetic component for T  <  304 K. The combination of relativistic fermion behaviour and ferromagnetism in Sr_1-yMn_1-zSb₂ offers a rare opportunity to investigate the interplay between relativistic fermions and spontaneous TRS breaking.

Association of intraocular pressure-related factors and retinal vessel diameter with optic disc rim area in subjects with and without primary open angle glaucoma

IMPORTANCE

The data may support the notion that the intra-ocular pressure (IOP)-related factors and vascular factors were implicated concurrently in glaucomatous optic nerve damage.

BACKGROUND

To study the association of intraocular pressure (IOP)-related factors, IOP, trans-lamina cribrosa pressure difference (TLCPD), cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) and retinal vessel diameters (RVD), central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE), central retinal venular equivalent (CRVE) with neuro-retinal rim area (RA).

DESIGN

A population-based, cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 6830 people aged 30 years and over.

METHODS

All participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination, fundus photograph-based measurements of RVD and Heidelberg retinal tomogram (HRT) measurement of optic disc.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

RA, CRAE, CRVE, IOP, body mass index (BMI), CSFP and TLCPD.

RESULTS

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) was diagnosed using two separate methods: 67 from expert consensus, and 125 from the International Society of Geographical and Epidemiologic Ophthalmology (ISGEO) classification. After excluding of those with high myopia or without gradable HRT images, 4194 non-glaucoma and 40 POAG were analysed for determinants of RA. On multivariable analysis determinants of reduced RA were POAG (P < 0.001), higher IOP (P = 0.03), higher refractive error (P < 0.01), longer axial length (P = 0.01), CRVE (P < 0.001), lower BMI (P = 0.015), older age (P < 0.001) smaller disc area (P < 0.001) and higher TLCPD (P = 0.03). When age and/or BMI were omitted from the model, reduced RA was also associated with lower CSFP (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

Reduced RA is associated with narrow CRVE and higher IOP or lower CSFP. The data supports the concurrent role of IOP-related and vascular factors in glaucomatous optic nerve damage.
