Abstract
In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic measurements have been made on 253/102No. A single rotational band was identified up to a probable spin of 39/2planck, which is assigned to the 7/2(+)[624] Nilsson configuration. The bandhead energy and the moment of inertia provide discriminating tests of contemporary models of the heaviest nuclei. Novel methods were required to interpret the sparse data set associated with cross sections of around 50 nb. These methods included comparisons of experimental and simulated spectra, as well as testing for evidence of a rotational band in the gammagamma matrix.

Abstract
The 62Ni(n,gamma)63Ni(t(1/2)=100+/-2 yr) reaction plays an important role in the control of the flow path of the slow neutron-capture (s) nucleosynthesis process. We have measured for the first time the total cross section of this reaction for a quasi-Maxwellian (kT=25 keV) neutron flux. The measurement was performed by fast-neutron activation, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry to detect directly the 63Ni product nuclei. The experimental value of 28.4+/-2.8 mb, fairly consistent with a recent calculation, affects the calculated net yield of 62Ni itself and the whole distribution of nuclei with 62<A<90 produced by the weak s process in massive stars.

Abstract
The incidence of burns in pregnant females is on the rise in villages in and around Aligarh. Hence, the study of such cases epidemiologically is of paramount importance to throw light on the exact nature of the incidents. This study was done on 1200 patients over a period of 5 years in JNMCH, AMU, Aligarh and data revealed 384 (32%) cases of burnt pregnant females who were in the age group of 19-35 years (median age = 27 years). Maximum number of deaths occurred in patients with a TBSA more than 50 and 70% burns. Period of amenorrhoea ranged from 1 to 8 months. Number of patients who expelled the dead foetus were 86. This study throws light on the bias against pregnant females, dowry factor and still further, female foeticide and oedipal dominance of mother in law over the grooms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND At the national Stone Centre we have adopted a proactive management approach involving early ureteroscopy for ureteric calculi. As the efficacy of ureteroscopy is known this study focuses on the low intra-operative complication rate as justification for a proactive management protocol. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective study (1987-1997) identified 1936 patients undergoing 2273 ureteroscopies. A database was created from inpatient hospital records. The male to female ratio was 3 to 1, age range was 25 to 84 years. RESULTS Twenty-three patients (1%) had an intra-operative complication during ureteroscopy. Immediate ureteric JJ stenting was performed in 16 cases with ureteric injury. Two cases underwent percutaneous drainage and delayed antegrade ureteric stenting, ureteroscopy was terminated because of poor visibility. Five patients (0.22%) underwent open surgery for: ureteric perforation (n = 2); Dormia basket ureteric avulsion (n = 1); impacted Dormia basket and stone (n = 1); and impacted balloon dilator and stone (n = l). Ureteroscopic complications were not related to the level of ureteric calculus. CONCLUSION A protocol of proactive management of ureteric calculi facilitates rapid turnover of large patient numbers. This approach is supported by the low intra-operative complication rate, most of which can be managed by further endoscopic procedures. In the event of corrective open surgery a favourable outcome has resulted.

Abstract
The decay of 182Hf, now extinct, into stable 182W has developed into an important chronometer for studying early solar system processes such as the accretion and differentiation of planetesimals and the formation of the Earth and the Moon. The only 182Hf half-life measurements available were performed 40 years ago and resulted in an imprecise half-life of (9+/-2)x10(6) yr. We redetermined the half-life by measuring the specific activity of 182Hf based on two independent methods, resulting in a value of t(1/2)(182Hf)=(8.90+/-0.09)x10(6) yr, in good agreement with the previous value, but with a 20 times smaller uncertainty. The greatly improved precision of this half-life now permits very precise intercalibration of the 182Hf-182W isotopic system with other chronometers.

Abstract
Asbestos was monitored in water, sediment, and aquatic plant samples around an asbestos cement factory. Based on asbestos concentration found in aquatic plants during monitoring, and the propensity of asbestos to cause oxidative stress in animal models, laboratory experiments were conducted to assess toxicity of chrysotile asbestos on an aquatic macrophyte, duckweed (Lemna gibba). L. gibba plants were exposed to two concentrations of chrysotile asbestos (0.5 microg and 5.0 microg chrysotile in 5.0 microl double distilled water) twice per week during a period of 28 days and cultured in medium containing 0.1 g chrysotile/L. Control plants were cultured in medium without chrysotile asbestos. Effect of chrysotile exposure on certain growth and physiological and biochemical parameters was evaluated. An inhibition effect of chrysotile exposure was found on the number of fronds, root length, and biomass. Similar alterations in contents of chlorophyll, carotenoid, total free sugar, starch, and protein were also found. Contrary to effect on these parameters, a dose- and time-dependent increase in efflux of electrolytes, lipid peroxidation, cellular hydrogen peroxide, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activity was found. The results indicate oxidative stress and phytotoxicity of chrysotile asbestos on duckweed.

Abstract
We have measured the total energy of the alpha particles following the beta decay of 8B by implanting 8B into a planar silicon surface barrier detector. Calibration was performed using alpha particles following the beta decay of 20Na, similarly implanted. The alpha spectrum is used to infer the 8B neutrino spectrum which is an important input in the interpretation of experiments that detect energetic neutrinos from the Sun. The alpha spectrum reported here is in disagreement with the previous best measurement which used two detectors in coincidence.

Abstract
Arthroconidia produced by dermatophytic fungi are considered to be the primary cause of skin and nail infections in humans and animals. Trichophyton rubrum is currently the most common cause of tinea pedis all over the world. The common form of T. rubrum produces a cottony colony in cultures that is characteristically low in conidia formation. The attempts to produce arthroconidia in T. rubrum have shown little success so far. Recently, Trichophyton raubitschekii, an anthropophilic dermatophyte prevalent in Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean, has been recognized as a variant of T. rubrum. In cultures, T. raubitschekii is characterized by a granular colony form, and an abundance of both micro- and macroconidia. The present study reveals a predominance of arthroconidia in two T. raubitschekii cultures isolated from clinical materials. These isolates were able to maintain arthroconidiation in bimonthly subcultures throughout the entire course of this study. The growth parameters for in vitro cultivation of arthroconidia are described here. Arthroconidia prepared from T. raubitschekii cultures showed greater than 95% germination within 21 h of suspension in phosphate-buffered saline. The availability of arthroconidia in T. raubitschekii cultures appears to offer a practical means of characterizing infective cells in T. rubrum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peristomal infection can sometimes complicate percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement. Antibiotic prophylaxis has, in some studies, been shown to reduce the incidence. However, the use of prophylaxis varies widely, possibly because the design and findings of the studies have differed, making their relevance to clinical practice difficult to interpret. AIM To determine the efficacy of antibiotics, either prophylaxis or concurrent antibiotics at the time of the procedure, in reducing peristomal infection after PEG insertion in the context of a study designed to reflect current practice. METHODS One hundred and forty-one patients undergoing PEG placement were randomised to group one to receive either a single dose of 750 mg of intravenous cefuroxime (n=50) or placebo (n=51) 30 min before PEG insertion. Forty patients who, for various reasons, were already receiving antibiotics were allocated to group two. The peristomal site was evaluated on day 3, 5 and 7 following insertion. Erythema and exudate were scored on a scale from 0 to 4; induration was scored on a scale of 0-3. A maximum combined score of 8 or higher or the presence of pus was criteria for infection. The primary outcome measure was the occurrence of a peristomal wound infection at any time within one week of PEG insertion. RESULTS Peristomal wound infection was significantly reduced in patients who received antibiotics either as a single dose of cefuroxime [one of 33 (3%)], or in those on antibiotics for prior indications [one of 36 (3%)], compared with placebo [six of 33 (18%)], P=0.04 and 0.03, respectively. CONCLUSION Antibiotics, either prophylaxis or concurrent, reduce the incidence of peristomal wound infection after PEG placement.
