Plasma β-Alanine is Positively Associated With Risk of Ischemic Stroke: a Nested Case-Control Study. J Nutr 2023; 153:1162-1169. [PMID: 36854355 DOI: 10.1016/j.tjnut.2023.02.029] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/26/2022] [Revised: 02/17/2023] [Accepted: 02/23/2023] [Indexed: 02/27/2023] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies suggested that β-alanine as a neurotransmitter could affect the pathogenesis of ischemic damage. However, the association between circulating β-alanine and risk of ischemic stroke (IS) has not been evaluated in populations. OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine the association between β-alanine and IS risk in a nested case-control study. METHODS We performed a case-control study nested within a prospective community-based cohort (n = 16457; median follow-up time: 5.3 y), which included 321 incident IS cases and 321 controls matched by age and sex. Β-alanine and other metabolites were measured in plasma after overnight fasting by LC-MS/MS. The association of β-alanine with risk of IS was evaluated by conditional logistic regression. BMI, current smoking, educational attainment, physical activity, total energy intake, family history of stroke, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and estimated GFR were adjusted in multivariable models. RESULTS There was a significant Spearman partial correlation between β-alanine and 4-pyridoxic acid (ρ = 0.239; P < 0.001). Participants with elevated β-alanine levels were more likely to develop IS with an adjusted OR of 1.26 (95% CI: 1.06-1.51; P = 0.011) (per standard deviation increment). This association remained significant after excluding the first 2 y of follow-up, and after further adjustment for red meat intake, total protein intake, medication use, or vitamin B6 indicators. CONCLUSIONS Our novel findings revealed that plasma β-alanine at baseline were positively associated with risk of IS and may function as an early biomarker of IS risk.

Abstract
Sensation seeking has been extensively demonstrated as a risk factor for substance use. Potential bidirectional associations between sensation seeking and substance use at the within-person level are incompletely understood. The present study examined longitudinal trajectories of sensation seeking and substance use and bidirectional longitudinal associations between sensation seeking and substance use in Chinese adolescents during a 3-year period over three time points. A total of 10,138 adolescents (59.8%) male; Mage = 16.77, SD = 0.83 at time (1) were surveyed. Sensation seeking and substance use frequency increased concomitantly over time. At the within-person level, sensation seeking and substance use were reciprocally predictable, and there were no evidence of sex difference in longitudinal associations. This study provides unique data concerning the relationship between sensation seeking and substance use in a sample of Chinese adolescents, and highlights the importance of identifying sensation seeking behaviors to prevent substance use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Worldwide, >130 babies have been born from ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) and ovarian tissue transplantation (OTT). Ovarian tissue cryopreservation can improve quality of life among young female cancer survivors. Here, we assessed the feasibility of OTC and subsequent OTT in Hong Kong via xenografts in nude mice. METHODS This pilot study was conducted in a university-affiliated tertiary hospital. Fifty-two ovarian tissues were collected from 12 patients aged 29 to 41 years during ovarian surgery, then engrafted into 34 nude mice. The efficacies of slow freezing and vitrification were directly compared. In Phase I, non-ovariectomised nude mice underwent ovarian tissue engraftment. In Phase II, ovariectomised nude mice underwent ovarian tissue engraftment, followed by gonadotrophin administration to promote folliculogenesis. Ovarian tissue viability was assessed by gross anatomical, histological, and immunohistochemical examinations before and after OTC. Follicular density and morphological integrity were also assessed. RESULTS After OTC and OTT, grafted ovarian tissues remained viable in nude mice. Primordial follicles were observed in thawed and grafted ovarian tissues, indicating that the cryopreservation and transplantation protocols were both effective. The results were unaffected by gonadotrophin stimulation. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the feasibility of OTC in Hong Kong as well as primordial follicle viability after OTC and OTT in nude mice. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is ideal for patients who cannot undergo the ovarian stimulation necessary for oocyte or embryo freezing as well as prepubertal girls (all ineligible for oocyte freezing). Our findings support the clinical implementation of OTC and subsequent OTT in Hong Kong.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of the background fitting of e-commerce live streaming on consumers' purchase intentions and the relevant internal psychological mechanism from the cognitive-affective perspective. Methods In this study, a theoretical framework model of SOR comprising six variables is established. SPSS and SmartPLS are used to test the model and analyze data collected from a comprehensive questionnaire survey of 424 Chinese online consumers. Results Results demonstrate that the impact of background fitting in e-commerce live streaming on consumers' purchase intentions can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, background fitting (comprised of both product-background fit and anchor-background fit) positively affect consumer cognitive process (perceived trust and perceived value). Perceived trust is mainly affected by anchor-background fit, while perceived value is mainly affected by product-background fit. In the second stage, consumers' cognitive process subsequently affects their affective process (perceived pleasure). Perceived value also has a greater positive effect on consumers' perceived pleasure than perceived trust, although perceived trust is a prerequisite for improving perceived value. In the third stage, the affective process further promotes consumers' purchase intentions. Conclusion Combining both SOR theory and cognitive-affective perspective, this study reveals that the internal influence mechanism of background fitting in e-commerce live streaming on consumers' purchase intentions is divided into three stages. Theoretically, this study not only expands the application of SOR theory in the research field of e-commerce live streaming from the perspective of external background stimulation, but also importantly contributes to the application of cognitive-emotional perspective in e-commerce live streaming. Practically, the study suggests optimizing background fitting as an effective way to improve consumer purchase intention in e-commerce live streaming, and it is better to optimize background fitting from the perspective of improving perceived trust, perceived value, and perceived pleasure.

Epigenome-wide DNA methylation in leukocytes and toenail metals: The normative aging study. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 217:114797. [PMID: 36379232 PMCID: PMC9825663 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2022.114797] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/07/2022] [Revised: 10/27/2022] [Accepted: 11/10/2022] [Indexed: 06/16/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Environmental metal exposures have been associated with multiple deleterious health endpoints. DNA methylation (DNAm) may provide insight into the mechanisms underlying these relationships. Toenail metals are non-invasive biomarkers, reflecting a medium-term time exposure window. OBJECTIVES This study examined variation in leukocyte DNAm and toenail arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and mercury (Hg) among elderly men in the Normative Aging Study, a longitudinal cohort. METHODS We repeatedly collected samples of blood and toenail clippings. We measured DNAm in leukocytes with the Illumina HumanMethylation450 K BeadChip. We first performed median regression to evaluate the effects of each individual toenail metal on DNAm at three levels: individual cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites, regions, and pathways. Then, we applied a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to assess the joint and individual effects of metal mixtures on DNAm. Significant CpGs were identified using a multiple testing correction based on the independent degrees of freedom approach for correlated outcomes. The approach considers the effective degrees of freedom in the DNAm data using the principal components that explain >95% variation of the data. RESULTS We included 564 subjects (754 visits) between 1999 and 2013. The numbers of significantly differentially methylated CpG sites, regions, and pathways varied by metals. For example, we found six significant pathways for As, three for Cd, and one for Mn. The As-associated pathways were associated with cancer (e.g., skin cancer) and cardiovascular disease, whereas the Cd-associated pathways were related to lung cancer. Metal mixtures were also associated with 47 significant CpG sites, as well as pathways, mainly related to cancer and cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS This study provides an approach to understanding the potential epigenetic mechanisms underlying observed relations between toenail metals and adverse health endpoints.

Accuracy of stroke volume variation and pulse pressure variation in predicting fluid responsiveness undergoing one-lung ventilation during thoracic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis. ANNALS OF TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE 2023; 11:19. [PMID: 36760241 PMCID: PMC9906205 DOI: 10.21037/atm-22-6030] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/09/2022] [Accepted: 01/05/2023] [Indexed: 01/16/2023]
Abstract
Background Stroke volume variation (SVV) and pulse pressure variation (PPV) are based on the interaction between the heart and lungs during mechanical ventilation. However, debate continues as to whether SVV and PPV can accurately predict fluid responsiveness during the one-lung ventilation (OLV). We therefore undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials that investigated the diagnostic value of SVV and PPV in predicting fluid responsiveness undergoing OLV during thoracic surgery. Methods The MEDLINE, EMBASE, WANFANG, and CENTRAL databases were systematically searched for studies on the use of SVV and/or PPV in patients undergoing OLV from 2010 to 2021. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. The funnel diagram analysis was used to test publication bias. A fixed-effects model was used to calculate the pooled values of sensitivity, specificity, the diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the relevant 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). The summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curves were estimated, and the areas under the SROC curve were calculated. Results In total nine studies, comprising 452 patients were ultimately included in this meta-analysis, including 217 (48%) responders and 235 (52%) nonresponders. After combining the correlation coefficients, a slight heterogeneity was found between SVV and PPV in these selected studies (I2 SVV =19.7%, I2 PPV =15.3%), and the funnel diagram also showed that the P values of SVV and PPV were 0.33 and 0.26. After the pooled analysis, the respective sensitivity of SVV and PPV in predicting fluid responsiveness was 0.66 and 0.61, the specificity was 0.62 and 0.53, the positive likelihood ratios were 1.7 and 1.3, the negative likelihood ratios were 0.55 and 0.74, and the DORs were 3 and 2. The areas under the SROC curve of SVV and PPV were 0.68 and 0.60, respectively, according to STATA SE16 software, and the combined areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of SVV and PPV were 0.681 and 0.604, respectively, according to MedCalc19.0.4 software. Conclusions Current evidence suggests that SVV and PPV are not suitable for guiding intraoperative fluid therapy due to their poor ability to predict fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing OLV, and we need a better indicator instead.

Abstract
As an internal modification of transcripts, RNA methylation determines RNA fate by changing RNA-protein binding affinity. In plants, RNA methylation is ubiquitous and is involved in all aspects of RNA post-transcriptional regulation. For instance, long-distance mobile RNAs, strongly influenced by their methylation status, play important roles in plant growth, development and environmental adaptation. Cucumber/pumpkin heterografts are widely used to improve stress tolerance of cucumber and to study mobile RNA signals due to their strong developed vasculature system. Here, we developed the Cucume (Cucurbit RNA methylation, http://cucume.cn/) database for these two important vegetables, cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) with high productivity worldwide. We identified mRNAs harboring 5-methylcytosine (m5C) and N6-methyladenosine (m6A) sites in pumpkin and cucumber at the whole genome level via Methylated RNA Immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeRIP-seq) of different tissues and the vascular exudates. In addition to RNA methylation sites, the Cucume database includes graft-transmissible systemic mRNAs identified in previous studies using cucumber/pumpkin heterografts. The further integration of cucumber genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) and quantitative trait loci (QTL) allows the study of RNA methylation-related genetic and epigenetic regulation in cucurbits. Therefore, the here developed Cucume database will promote understanding the role of cucurbit RNA methylation in RNA mobility and QTL, ultimately benefitting future breeding of agronomic crop germplasms.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA), the most prevalent joint disease and the leading cause of disability, remains an incurable disease largely because the etiology and pathogenesis underlying this degenerative process are poorly understood. Low-grade inflammation within joints is a well-established factor that disturbs joint homeostasis and leads to an imbalance between anabolic and catabolic processes in articular cartilage; however, the complexity of the network between inflammatory factors that often involves positive and negative feedback loops makes current anti-cytokine therapy ineffective. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as key regulators to control inflammation, and aberrant miRNAs expression has recently been linked to OA pathophysiology. In the present study, we characterized transcriptomic profiles of miRNAs in primary murine articular chondrocytes in response to a proinflammatory cytokine, IL-1β, and identified miR-146a-5p as the most responsive miRNA to IL-1β. miR-146a-5p was also found to be upregulated in human OA cartilage. We further demonstrated that knockdown of miR-146a-5p antagonized IL-1β-mediated inflammatory responses and IL-1β-induced catabolism in vitro, and silencing of miR-146a in chondrocytes ameliorated articular cartilage destruction and reduced OA-evoked pain in an injury-induced murine OA model. Moreover, parallel RNA sequencing revealed that differentially expressed genes in response to IL-1β were enriched in pathways related to inflammatory processes, cartilage matrix homeostasis, and cell metabolism. Bioinformatic analyses of putative miR-146a-5p gene targets and following prediction of protein-protein interactions suggest a functional role of miR-146a-5p in mediating inflammatory processes and regulation of cartilage homeostasis. Our genetic and transcriptomic data define a crucial role of miR-146a-5p in OA pathogenesis and implicate modulation of miR-146a-5p in articular chondrocytes as a potential therapeutic strategy to alleviate OA.

Abstract
Apple ring rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea is an important disease that leads to severe quality deterioration and yield loss at pre-harvest and postharvest stages. Therefore, it is urgent to develop safe and efficient measures to control this disease. The objective of the present study was to investigate the biocontrol features of Pseudomonas syringae B-1 against B. dothidea and explore its mechanism of action utilizing in vitro and in vivo assays. The results showed that P. syringae B-1 strongly reduced the incidence of apple ring rot and lesion diameter by 41.2 and 90.2%, respectively, in comparison to the control fruit. In addition, the control efficiency of strain B-1 against B. dothidea infection depended on its concentration and the interval time. P. syringae B-1 cells showed higher inhibitory activities than its culture filtrates on the mycelial growth and spore germination of B. dothidea. Moreover, P. syringae B-1 treatment alleviated electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation, and H2O2 accumulation in B. dothidea-infected apple fruit by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities, including peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase. We also found that strain B-1 treatment enhanced four defense-related enzyme activities and stimulated the accumulation of three disease-resistant substances including phenolics, lignin, and salicylic acid (SA) in apple fruit. In addition, strain B-1 triggered the upregulated expression of defense-related genes such as PR genes (PR1, PR5, GLU, and CHI) and two genes involved in the biosynthesis of SA (SID2 and PAD4) to promote the resistance potential in apple fruit. Hence, our results suggest that P. syringae B-1 is a promising strategy against B. dothidea, mainly through reducing oxidative damage, activating defense-related enzymes, accumulating disease-resistant substances, and triggering the expression of resistance-correlated genes in apple fruit.

Abstract
Purpose Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) is associated with an increased risk of multiple diseases. Therefore, the early identification and intervention of IFG are particularly significant. Our study aims to construct and validate a clinical and laboratory-based nomogram (CLN) model for predicting IFG risk. Patients and Methods This cross-sectional study collected information on health check-up subjects. Risk predictors were screened mainly by the LASSO regression analysis and were applied to construct the CLN model. Furthermore, we showed examples of applications. Then, the accuracy of the CLN model was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) values, and the calibration curve of the CLN model in the training set and validation set, respectively. The decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to estimate the level of clinical benefit. Furthermore, the performance of the CLN model was evaluated in the independent validation dataset. Results In the model development dataset, 2340 subjects were randomly assigned to the training set (N = 1638) and validation set (N = 702). Six predictors significantly associated with IFG were screened and used in the construction of the CLN model, a subject was randomly selected, and the risk of developing IFG was predicted to be 83.6% by using the CLN model. The AUC values of the CLN model were 0.783 in the training set and 0.789 in the validation set. The calibration curve demonstrated good concordance. DCA showed that the CLN model has good clinical application. We further performed independent validation (N = 1875), showed an AUC of 0.801, with the good agreement and clinical diagnostic value. Conclusion We developed and validated the CLN model that could predict the risk of IFG in the general population. It not only facilitates the diagnosis and treatment of IFG but also helps to reduce the medical and economic burdens of IFG-related diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Higher optimism is associated with reduced mortality and a lower risk of age-related chronic diseases. DNA methylation (DNAm) may provide insight into mechanisms underlying these relationships. We hypothesized that DNAm would differ among older individuals who are more versus less optimistic. METHODS Using cross-sectional data from two population-based cohorts of women with diverse races/ethnicities ( n = 3816) and men (only White, n = 667), we investigated the associations of optimism with epigenome-wide leukocyte DNAm. Random-effects meta-analyses were subsequently used to pool the individual results. Significantly differentially methylated cytosine-phosphate-guanines (CpGs) were identified by the "number of independent degrees of freedom" approach: effective degrees of freedom correction using the number of principal components (PCs), explaining >95% of the variation of the DNAm data (PC-correction). We performed regional analyses using comb-p and pathway analyses using the Ingenuity Pathway Analysis software. RESULTS We found that essentially all CpGs (total probe N = 359,862) were homogeneous across sex and race/ethnicity in the DNAm-optimism association. In the single CpG site analyses based on homogeneous CpGs, we identified 13 significantly differentially methylated probes using PC-correction. We found four significantly differentially methylated regions and two significantly differentially methylated pathways. The annotated genes from the single CpG site and regional analyses are involved in psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and cancer. Identified pathways were related to cancer, and neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. CONCLUSION Our findings provide new insights into possible mechanisms underlying optimism and health.

Reduction of antibiotic use and multi-drug resistance bacteria infection in neonates after improvement of antibiotics use strategy in a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit in southern China. Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis 2023; 42:87-98. Abstract
The investigation on antibiotic stewardship in neonatal intensive care unit in China is scarce. This study aimed to analyze the effect of a comprehensive 2-year antibiotic stewardship in a level 4 NICU. During this baseline period from October 1st 2017 to October 1st 2019, continuation of empirical antibiotic therapy for ruled-out sepsis courses was beyond 72 h and for pneumonia was more than 7 days. Meropenem or vancomycin was used even if they were not the only bacterial sensitive antibiotics. The intervention period was from October 2nd 2019 to August 23rd 2021. Three areas for quality improvement were targeted in our center: discontinuation of antibiotic use in ruled-out sepsis within 72 h, treatment duration for culture-negative pneumonia less than 7 days, and vancomycin or meropenem was not used unless the cultured bacteria was only susceptible to them. The total antibiotic consumption decreased from 791.1 to 466.3 days of therapy per 1000 patient days from baseline to intervention period. Antibiotics were stopped within 72 h for 47.48% patients with rule-out sepsis and within 7 days for 75.70% patients with pneumonia compared with 11.56% and 37.69% during the baseline period respectively. The prevalence of multi-drug resistance bacteria decreased from 67.20 to 48.90%. The total use rate of meropenem or vancomycin decreased from 7.6 to 1.8%. Our quality improvement approach on antibiotic strategy significantly reduced antibiotic use and prevalence of multi-drug resistance bacteria in our NICU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the health effects of air pollution and temperature are widely studied, the molecular effects are poorly understood. Extracellular microRNAs (ex-miRNAs) have the potential to serve as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers and/or to act as intercellular signaling molecules that mediate the effects of environmental exposures on health outcomes. METHODS We examined the relationship between short-term exposure to air pollution and ambient temperature and the ex-miRNA profiles of participants in the Normative Aging Study (NAS) from 1999 to 2015. Our exposures were defined as same-day, two-day, three-day, one-week, two-week, and three-week moving averages of PM2.5, NO2, O3, and temperature which were derived from high-resolution spatio-temporal models. The ex-miRNA profiles of the subjects were obtained during follow-up visits. We analyzed the data using a longitudinal quantile regression model adjusted for individual covariates, batch effects, and time trends. We adjusted for multiple comparisons using a false discovery rate (FDR) correction. Ex-miRNAs that were significantly associated with exposures were further investigated using pathway analyses. RESULTS We found that all the examined exposures were associated with changes in ex-miRNA profiles in our study, particularly PM2.5 which was responsible for most of the statistically significant results. We found 110 statistically significant exposure-outcome relationships that revealed associations with the levels of 52 unique ex-miRNAs. Pathway analyses showed these ex-miRNAs have been linked to target mRNAs, genes, and biological mechanisms that could affect virtually every organ system, and as such may be linked to multiple clinical disease presentations such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and neurological disease. CONCLUSIONS Air pollution and temperature exposures were significantly associated with alterations in the ex-miRNA profiles of NAS subjects with possible biological consequences.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is defined as a severe chronic degenerative neurological disease in human. The pathogenic mechanism of AD has been convincingly elucidated by the "amyloid cascade hypothesis" with the main focus of the pathological accretion of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides outside the cell. However, increasing evidence suggests that this hypothesis is weak in explaining the pathogenesis of AD. Neuroinflammation is crucial in the development of AD, which is proven by the elevated levels of inflammatory markers and the identification of AD risk genes relevant to the innate immune function. Here, we summarize the effects of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation on AD, focusing on the temporal and spatial changes in microglial phenotype, the interactions among microglia, Aβ, tau, and neurons, and the prospects and recent advances in neuroinflammation as a diagnostic and therapeutic target of AD.

Abstract
We previously described a DNA methylation (DNAm) based biomarker of human mortality risk DNAm GrimAge. Here we describe version 2 of GrimAge (trained on individuals aged between 40 and 92) which leverages two new DNAm based estimators of (log transformed) plasma proteins: high sensitivity C-reactive protein (logCRP) and hemoglobin A1C (logA1C). We evaluate GrimAge2 in 13,399 blood samples across nine study cohorts. After adjustment for age and sex, GrimAge2 outperforms GrimAge in predicting mortality across multiple racial/ethnic groups (meta P=3.6x10-167 versus P=2.6x10-144) and in terms of associations with age related conditions such as coronary heart disease, lung function measurement FEV1 (correlation= -0.31, P=1.1x10-136), computed tomography based measurements of fatty liver disease. We present evidence that GrimAge version 2 also applies to younger individuals and to saliva samples where it tracks markers of metabolic syndrome. DNAm logCRP is positively correlated with morbidity count (P=1.3x10-54). DNAm logA1C is highly associated with type 2 diabetes (P=5.8x10-155). DNAm PAI-1 outperforms the other age-adjusted DNAm biomarkers including GrimAge2 in correlating with triglyceride (cor=0.34, P=9.6x10-267) and visceral fat (cor=0.41, P=4.7x10-41). Overall, we demonstrate that GrimAge version 2 is an attractive epigenetic biomarker of human mortality and morbidity risk.

Identification of Pinelliae Rhizoma and its counterfeit species based on enzymatic signature peptides from toxic proteins. PHYTOMEDICINE : INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYTOTHERAPY AND PHYTOPHARMACOLOGY 2022; 107:154451. [PMID: 36126407 DOI: 10.1016/j.phymed.2022.154451] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/18/2022] [Revised: 08/28/2022] [Accepted: 09/09/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Pinelliae Rhizoma (PR), a toxic medication, with long history, is commonly used for eliminating phlegm. Due to the shortage of wild resources and the relative lacking of cultivation technology, it is often confused with its counterfeit species in the market, such as Typhonii Rhizoma (TR), Arisaematis Rhizoma (AR) and tubers of Typhonium flagelliforme (TF) and Pinellia pedatisecta (PP). PURPOSE It was aimed to screen signature enzymatic peptides from toxic proteins to identify PR and its four counterfeit species. STUDY DESIGN A comparative proteogenomics strategy based on open-source transcriptome data was applied for screening signature peptides from toxic proteins, which were applied for species authentication of PR and its counterfeit species. METHODS Firstly, the open-source transcriptome data was used for constructing the annotated protein database, which was used for peptides identification. Secondly, the toxicity of different fractions of PR were evaluated by the rat peritoneal inflammation model. Furthermore, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) were used to profile the main proteins bands of five species, whose sequences were identified based on the in-gel digestion experiment by using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Finally, the label-free proteomic analysis was performed to character the proteins and screen the signature peptides of five species, which were validated in commercially available products by dynamic multi reaction monitor (DMRM). RESULTS The results in this study confirmed that protein was the main toxic components of PR. Both Pinellia ternata agglutinin (PTA) and trypsin inhibitor (TI) like proteins are the main proteins, which were characterized by proteomic analysis based on four annotated protein database. Meanwhile, seven signature peptides from toxic proteins were screened and validated with good repeatability and specificity in commercial products. CONCLUSION Seven signature enzymatic peptides from toxic protein screened by the comparative proteogenomics strategy based on open-source transcriptome data achieved good identification ability of PR and its four counterfeit species.

Fine particle components and risk of psychiatric hospitalization in the U.S. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 849:157934. [PMID: 35952868 PMCID: PMC10021693 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.157934] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/29/2022] [Revised: 07/28/2022] [Accepted: 08/05/2022] [Indexed: 05/27/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of evidence for the associations between atmospheric particle components exposure and psychiatric health. We aimed to identify the most toxic particle component(s) and source(s) related with psychiatric illness. METHODS Using Health Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) State Inpatient Databases (SIDs), we analyzed the relative risk (RR) of psychiatric hospitalization associated with increased residential exposure to 14 particle components (Zn, V, Si, Pb, Ni, K, Fe, Cu, Ca, Br, sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC)). We covered the residents of eight U.S. states, who contributed to 5,012,041 psychiatric admissions over 2002-2018. Single component models were conducted via fitting zero-inflated negative binomial regression for each component with aggregated counts of total psychiatric hospitalizations per ZIP code per year as dependent variable. We used Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) to identify particle source factors and obtained the source-specific estimates. Generalized Weighted Quantile Sum (gWQS) Regression was applied to obtain an overall mixture effect. Separate but similar models were fitted for different age groups (<30 yrs. vs. ≥ 30 yrs) and psychiatric illness sub-categories to assess effect heterogeneity. RESULTS Sulfate, Fe, Pb and Zn were associated with the largest risk increases in single-component models. The biggest harmful associations were observed for metal industry source (high loadings of Pb and sulfate). For one quartile increase in components mixture score, we observed an adjusted RR of 1.24 (95 % CI, 1.21-1.26). Older population were more affected. We also observed higher increase in bipolar and psychotic admission risk for increased components source and mixture level. CONCLUSION Living in areas with higher levels of particle components was associated with increased risk of psychiatric hospitalization among the residents in eight U.S. states. Certain components (i.e. Pb, sulfate) and sources (metal industry) were the most related.

Self-Doping Based Facet Junctions and Oxygen Vacancies in Ferroelectric Bi 3Ti xNb 2-xO 9 Nanosheets for Boosting Photocatalytic Degradation and Antibacterial Activity. Abstract
Constructing facet junction in semiconductor photocatalysts has been demonstrated as an effective method to promote charge-carrier separation and suppress carrier recombination. Herein, we proposed a novel but facile self-doping strategy to regulate the crystal facet exposure ratio in ferroelectric Bi3TixNb2-xO9 single-crystalline nanosheets, thereby optimizing its facet junction effect. Through tuning the atomic ratio of Ti and Nb, the exposure ratio of {001} and {110} crystal planes in Bi3TixNb2-xO9 nanosheets can be delicately modulated, and more {110} facets were exposed with the increase of the Ti/Nb atomic ratio as evidenced by the X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy results. A facet junction between {110} and {001} crystal planes was verified based on the density functional theory calculation and photodeposition experiment results. Photogenerated electrons tend to accumulate in {110}, while holes gathered in {001} crystal planes. Owing to the optimal facet junction effect, the sample of Ti1.05 shows the most efficient charge-carrier separation and transportation compared to Ti0.95 and Ti1.00 as supported by the photoluminescence, surface photovoltage, photoelectrochemistry, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results. In addition, the oxygen vacancy arising from the inequivalent substitution of Nb5+ by Ti4+ as proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and EPR results and the enhanced ferroelectricity supported by P-E loops can also assist charge-carrier separation and migration. Benefiting from these properties, Ti1.05 outperformed Ti0.95 and Ti1.00 in the photodegradation of organic dye and antibiotic molecules. Meanwhile, the excellent antibacterial activity of Ti1.05 under visible light was also demonstrated by the Escherichia coli sterilization experiment. This work not only presents a novel pathway to adjust the facet junction but also provides new deep insights into the crystal facet engineering in ferroelectrics as photocatalysts.

Nomograms Based on Fibrinogen, Albumin, Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio, and Carbohydrate Antigen 125 for Predicting Endometrial Cancer Prognosis. Cancers (Basel) 2022; 14:cancers14225632. [PMID: 36428725 PMCID: PMC9688634 DOI: 10.3390/cancers14225632] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/17/2022] [Revised: 11/06/2022] [Accepted: 11/08/2022] [Indexed: 11/18/2022] Open
Abstract
Background: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of the preoperative levels of fibrinogen, albumin (ALB), neutrophil−lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) in endometrial cancer and to establish nomograms for predicting patient survival. Methods: Patients with endometrial cancer (n = 1483) who underwent surgery were included in this study, and their preoperative fibrinogen, ALB, NLR, and CA125 levels and clinicopathological characteristics were collected. Patients were randomized into a training cohort (70%, n = 1038) and an external validation cohort (30%, n = 445). The Cox regression analysis was performed using the data for the patients in the training cohort to identify independent prognostic factors; nomograms for predicting prognosis were established and validated. Results: High fibrinogen (≥3.185 g/L), NLR (≥2.521 g/L), and CA125 (≥35 U/mL) levels and low ALB (<4.185 g/L) levels were independently associated with poor progression-free survival (PFS) and poor overall survival (OS) in patients with endometrial cancer. Prognostic prediction model nomograms were developed and validated based on these results. Calibration curves and C-indexes underscored the good predictive power of the nomograms, and both the net reclassification index (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) values of the prognostic prediction model nomograms were improved. Conclusions: Nomograms that are developed based on preoperative fibrinogen, ALB, NLR, and CA125 levels accurately predict PFS and OS in patients with endometrial cancer.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution in the soil surrounding solid wastes from coking plants poses potential threats to human health and has attracted widespread attention. This study is the first to assess the spatial variability and risks of heavy metals in the soil surrounding solid waste from coking plants. The results showed that the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cd in the soil were much higher than the background value of the soil. Solid waste had a clear influence on the contents of Ni, Cd, Mn, Pb, and Cr in the soil. The ecological risk assessment of heavy metal pollution demonstrated that the pollution degree of Cu, Pb, and Cd was more serious than others, and the ecological risk of heavy metals was mainly caused by Cd in the soil. The human health risk assessment showed that adults and children near coking plants might face carcinogenic risk from exposure to Cr. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and management of soil heavy metal pollution surrounding solid waste in coking plants.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze and evaluate the differences in sex hormones after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery (LRYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in male patients with obesity. Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study. The inclusion criteria were (1) male patients with obesity who met the surgical indications of the "Chinese Guidelines for Surgical Treatment of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes" (2019 Edition); (2) patients with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥27.5 kg/m2 and obesity-related metabolic diseases, or patients with severe obesity and a BMI of ≥35 kg/m2; and (3) sex hormone levels checked 1 year after surgery. The exclusion criteria included (1) patients with endocrine diseases (thyrotoxicosis, hyperprolactinemia) and hypothalamic-pituitary lesions and (2) those with severe major organ dysfunction who could not tolerate anesthesia or surgery. According to the above criteria, the clinical data of male patients with obesity admitted to the Gastrointestinal Surgery/Bariatric Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University from October 2017 to January 2020 were included. A total of 52 male patients with obesity were included in this study. The mean age, body weight, BMI, and total testosterone level were (29.3±10.2) years, (123.6±35.4) kg, (40.1±11.1) kg/m2, and 7.6 (5.5, 9.1) nmol/L, respectively. Forty-five patients (86.5%) exhibited testosterone deficiency. Among all the patients, 29 underwent LSG (LSG group) and 23 underwent LRYGB surgery (LRYGB group). The main outcome measure was the change in sex hormone levels before and after bariatric surgery in all the patients. The secondary outcome measures were the comparison of changes in sex hormone levels before and after LSG and LRYGB. Results: Pearson correlation analysis showed that preoperative estradiol was positively correlated with waist circumference (R=0.299, P<0.05), hip circumference (R=0.326, P<0.05), and chest circumference (R=0.388, P<0.05). Testosterone was negatively correlated with BMI (R=-0.563, P<0.01), waist circumference (R=-0.521, P<0.01), hip circumference (R=-0.456, P<0.01), chest circumference (R=-0.600, P<0.01), and neck circumference (R=-0.547, P<0.01). One year following bariatric surgery, the serum testosterone (7.6 [5.5, 9.1] nmol/L vs. 13.6 [10.5, 15.4] nmol/L, Z=-5.910, P<0.001), follicle-stimulating hormone (4.7 [2.7, 5.3] IU/L vs. 6.5 [3.6, 7.8] IU/L, Z=-4.658, P<0.001), and progesterone (1.2 [0.4, 1.5] nmol/L vs. 1.9 [0.8, 1.3] nmol/L, Z=-2.542, P=0.011) levels were significantly higher in all the patients. Both estradiol (172.8 [115.6, 217.5] pmol/L vs. 138.3 [88.4, 168.1] pmol/L, Z=-2.828, P=0.005) and prolactin (11.4 [6.4, 14.6] mIU/L vs. 8.6 [4.8, 7.3] mIU/L, Z=-2.887, P=0.004) levels were decreased. In addition to prolactin levels in the LRYGB group, there were statistically significant differences in the levels of estradiol (P=0.030), follicle-stimulating hormone (P < 0.001), luteinizing hormone (P=0.033), progesterone (P=0.034), and testosterone (P<0.001) compared with their preoperative levels. In the LSG group, there were statistically significant differences in the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (P=0.011), prolactin (P=0.023), and testosterone (P<0.001) compared with their preoperative levels. Conclusion: The degree of obesity in men was negatively correlated with testosterone levels. Both LRYGB and LSG can significantly improve sex hormone levels in male patients with obesity, and testosterone levels show a significant increase after surgery.

[Application of the concept of precision obesity metabolic surgery in laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass]. ZHONGHUA WEI CHANG WAI KE ZA ZHI = CHINESE JOURNAL OF GASTROINTESTINAL SURGERY 2022; 25:875-880. Abstract
Due to the complexity and heterogeneity of obesity, the diagnosis and treatment of obesity vary greatly. Five to 10 percent of body weight can be lost through lifestyle modifications, nutritional and behavioral counseling, and the use of approved weight reduction medicines for obesity and diabetes; however, these non-surgical treatments are not effective for all patients. Compared to medical therapy, bariatric surgery is associated with higher rates of type 2 diabetes remission, lower mortality from vascular complications, and long-term, sustained weight loss. With the advent of precision medicine in surgical therapy, bariatric surgeons' fundamental understanding of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery has evolved in recent years. The objective of surgery has shifted from short-term weight loss to the safe and successful long-term management of patient weight and comorbidities. In laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, the concept of precision bariatric and metabolic surgery is mainly reflected in three aspects: accurate preoperative assessment, precise intraoperative operation, and comprehensive postoperative management. A new direction for the future development of precision laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and obesity metabolic surgery is to formulate precise and individualized surgical treatment plans for patients and to use artificial intelligence and big data technology to improve the standardization of specialist data.

Abstract
The melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is an important pest on various vegetables around the world and has developed resistance to neonicotinoids in fields. Cycloxaprid is a novel cis-nitromethylene configuration neonicotinoid insecticide that is different from trans-configuration neonicotinoids like imidacloprid and thiamethoxam. Herein, the cross-resistance to the other seven insecticides and fitness costs were investigated in the cycloxaprid-resistant A. gossypii strain (Cpd-R), which has developed 69.5-fold resistance to cycloxaprid. The results showed that the Cpd-R strain had very low levels of cross-resistance to imidacloprid (4.3-fold), acetamiprid (2.9-fold), thiamethoxam (3.7-fold), nitenpyram (6.1-fold), flupyradifurone (2.2-fold), and sulfoxaflor (4.5-fold), while it exhibited a cross-resistance to dinotefuran (10.6-fold). The fitness of the Cpd-R strain by life table analysis was only 0.799 compared to the susceptible strain (Cpd-S). This Cpd-R strain exhibited significantly reduction in fecundity, oviposition days, and developmental time of nymph stage compared to the Cpd-S strain. Moreover, the expression levels of some genes related to the development and reproduction, including EcR, USP, JHAMT, and JHEH were significantly up-regulated, while Vg was down-regulated in the Cpd-R strain. This study indicates that the Cpd-R strain possessed a certain fitness cost. The above research results are useful for rational application of cycloxaprid and implementing the appropriate resistance management strategy for A. gossypii.

Real-world effectiveness and safety of edoxaban in patients with and without a history of ischaemic stroke: results from the ETNA-AF programme. Eur Heart J 2022. [DOI: 10.1093/eurheartj/ehac544.2702] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/12/2022] Open
Abstract
Abstract
Background
Atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with a history of ischaemic stroke (IS) have a higher risk for recurrent IS events and were largely excluded from the pivotal, randomised, controlled phase 3 trials on oral anticoagulants. Thus, the effectiveness and safety of edoxaban in these patients need to be studied in a real-world setting.
Purpose
To compare edoxaban real-world effectiveness and safety in AF patients with or without an IS history.
Methods
The Global ETNA-AF programme (EU: NCT02944019, Japan: UMIN000017011, South Korea/Taiwan: NCT02951039) integrates data from multiple prospective, observational, noninterventional regional studies of AF patients receiving edoxaban for stroke prevention. This snapshot analysis summarises baseline characteristics with medical history and 2-year annualised rates of all-cause death, cardiovascular (CV) death, stroke (haemorrhagic, ischaemic, any), and bleeding (including major bleeding [MB], major gastrointestinal [GI] bleeding, intracranial haemorrhage [ICH], clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding [CRNMB], and any bleeding) in patients with or without IS history.
Results
Data from 27,333 patients (3215 with prior IS and 24,118 without) from Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were analysed. Patients with IS history were significantly older, more likely ≥75 years of age, and had a lower mean body weight and creatinine clearance (P<0.0001 for all; Table). Patients with IS history also had significantly higher baseline stroke (CHA2DS2-VASc) and bleeding (HAS-BLED) risk scores (P<0.0001 for both; Table). A significantly higher percentage of patients with IS history had previous transient ischaemic attacks (TIA), MB, and ICH (P<0.0001 for all; Table). Patients with IS history more likely received edoxaban 30 mg vs 60 mg at baseline (P<0.0001). Effectiveness and safety outcomes hazard ratios are shown in the Figure. Patients with IS history had significantly higher rates of all-cause death (4.5% vs 3.0%; P<0.0001), CV death (1.9% vs 1.4%; P=0.004), IS (2.5% vs 0.5%; P<0.0001), any stroke (3.1% vs 0.7%; P<0.0001), and TIA (0.5% vs 0.2%; P=0.0002). Patients with IS history had significantly higher annualised rates of MB (1.6% vs 1.0%; P<0.0001), major GI bleeding (0.8% vs 0.5%; P=0.003), ICH (0.6% vs 0.3%; P<0.0001), haemorrhagic stroke (0.5% vs 0.2%; P<0.0001), CRNMB (2.3% vs 1.3%; P<0.0001), and any bleeding (6.1% vs 4.1%; P<0.0001).
Conclusions
Patients with AF who have a history of IS are more likely elderly; have histories of MB, ICH, and TIA; and have high baseline stroke and bleeding risk scores. Patients with IS history receiving edoxaban have a considerably higher likelihood of experiencing IS or TIA, whereas the risk of experiencing any bleeding event (with the exception of ICH) is only modestly higher than in those without IS history.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Heart failure (HF) occurs in approximately 26% of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Real-world data of oral anticoagulation with edoxaban in AF patients with HF history are limited.
Purpose
To compare edoxaban effectiveness and safety in AF patients with or without HF history.
Methods
The Global ETNA-AF programme (EU: NCT02944019, Japan: UMIN000017011, South Korea/Taiwan: NCT02951039) integrates data from multiple prospective, observational, noninterventional regional studies of AF patients receiving edoxaban for stroke prevention. This snapshot analysis summarises baseline characteristics and 2-year annualised rates of all-cause death, cardiovascular (CV) death, stroke (haemorrhagic, ischaemic, any), and bleeding (major bleeding [MB], major gastrointestinal [GI] bleeding, intracranial haemorrhage [ICH], clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding [CRNMB], and any bleeding) in patients with or without HF history. Univariate Cox regression models assessed clinical outcomes.
Results
Data from 27,333 patients (5258 with HF history) from Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were analysed. Patients with HF history were significantly older and had lower mean body weight and creatinine clearance (P<0.0001 all; Table). Patients with HF history had significantly higher baseline stroke (CHA2DS2-VASc) and bleeding (HAS-BLED) risk scores (P<0.0001 both; Table). Significantly more patients with HF history reported previous experiences with MB (P=0.001) and major GI bleeding (P=0.007); these patients were also more likely to receive 30 mg edoxaban vs 60 mg edoxaban (P<0.0001; Table). Patients with HF history had significantly (P<0.0001 both) higher rates of all-cause (6.1% vs 2.5%; hazard ratio [HR] (95% confidence interval [CI]), 2.41 [2.17–2.68]) and CV death (2.8% vs 1.2%; HR [95% CI], 2.39 [2.05–2.80]), and fatal bleeding (0.3% vs 0.2%; HR [95% CI], 1.86 [1.20–2.89]; Figure). The proportion of all-cause deaths that were fatal bleeding events was 6% and 7% for patients with and without HF, respectively. Additionally, patients with HF history had significantly (P<0.0001 both) higher rates of MB (1.7% vs 0.9%; HR [95% CI], 1.87 [1.53–2.28]) and major GI bleeding (1.1% vs 0.4%; HR [95% CI], 2.69 [2.07–3.49]), with a greater proportion of MB events classified as major GI bleeding (64.5% vs 44.8%; P<0.0001). Patients with HF history also had significantly (P<0.0001 both) higher rates of CRNMB (HR [95% CI], 1.87 [1.58–2.21]) and any bleeding (HR [95% CI], 1.49 [1.34–1.65]). Rates of ICH and haemorrhagic stroke were similar in both groups.
Conclusions
In AF patients receiving edoxaban, the rates of MB, major GI bleeding, and CV or all-cause death were higher when comparing those with versus without HF history. The higher incidence of MB and major GI bleeding in patients with HF history did not lead to proportionally higher fatal bleeding rates among all-cause deaths.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Atrial fibrillation patients with a history of major bleeding (MB) are at high risk of future bleeding events; this history was an exclusion criterion in pivotal phase 3 trials of anticoagulation for stroke prevention. Real-world edoxaban effectiveness and safety in patients with a history of MB were analysed from the global ETNA programme.
Purpose
To compare edoxaban effectiveness and safety in AF patients with or without an MB history.
Methods
The Global ETNA-AF programme (EU: NCT02944019, Japan: UMIN000017011, South Korea/Taiwan: NCT02951039) integrates data from multiple prospective, observational, noninterventional regional studies of AF patients treated with edoxaban for stroke prevention. This snapshot analysis summarises global baseline characteristics and 2-year annualised rates of all-cause death, cardiovascular death, stroke (haemorrhagic, ischaemic, any), and bleeding (including MB, major gastrointestinal bleeding [MGIB], intracranial haemorrhage [ICH], clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding, and any bleeding) in patients with or without MB history.
Results
Data from 27,333 patients (479 with MB history and 26,854 without) from Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were analysed. Patients with MB history were significantly older (P<0.0001) and more likely to be ≥75 years of age (P=0.0003), to be male (P=0.024), and to have a lower body weight and creatinine clearance (P<0.0001 for both) (Table). Globally, antiplatelet use was significantly higher in patients with MB history compared with patients without (P=0.005). Patients with MB history were more likely to have previously diagnosed heart failure (HF, P=0.001) and to receive 30 mg vs 60 mg edoxaban at baseline (P<0.0001). Hazard ratios for effectiveness and safety outcomes are shown in the Figure. Patients with MB history had significantly higher annualised rates of all-cause death (5.7% vs 3.1%; P<0.0001), ischaemic stroke (1.8% vs 0.7%; P=0.002), and any stroke (3.1% vs 0.9%; P<0.0001) than patients without MB history. Patients with MB history also had significantly higher annualised rates of MB (3.6% vs 1.0%; P<0.0001), MGIB (1.5% vs 0.5%; P=0.001), ICH (1.5% vs 0.3%; P<0.0001), fatal bleeding (0.9% vs 0.2%; P<0.0001), and fatal ICH (0.5% vs 0.1%; P=0.0002). Among patients with MB history, the annualised rate of ICH did not differ between patients with ICH history (1.42%/yr) vs without (1.65%/yr); whereas the annualised rate of MGIB was significantly higher in patients with MGIB history vs without (4.14%/yr vs 1.08%/yr; P=0.0337).
Conclusions
Patients with AF receiving edoxaban and who have a history of MB are more likely elderly, male, and have comorbidities, including HF. These patients are also more susceptible to any adverse cardiovascular event. ICH event rates were not higher in patients with prior ICH than those with non-ICH major bleedings, whereas history of MGIB was associated with a high risk of MGIB recurrence.

Abstract
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is an important obesity surgery. The risk of remnant gastric cancer after RYGB for obesity is gaining growing attention from bariatric surgeons and patients with obesity. This systematic review included articles from major databases internationally and domestically that specifically described the remnant gastric cancer after RYGB intervention, a total of 21 cases was subsequently analyzed. The average median time from post-operative RYGB to diagnosis of gastric cancer was 11 years (1-28 years), the duration of gastric cancer symptoms lasted 7 days to 6 years, abdominal pain is the most common (71.4%), especially in the upper abdomen (33.3%), followed by nausea and vomiting (33.3%), over-weight loss (33.3%), and abdominal bloating (28.6%), etc. Neoplasm location was reported to occur in the antrum or the pre-pyloric region (71.4%), with adenocarcinoma being the most common tumor histology observed (71.4%), tumor stage III-IV as the most diagnosed, 38.1% of tumor were deemed to be unresectable, 52.4% of the patients performed subtotal gastrectomy and lymphadenectomy. In addition, a global article investigating the occurrence of esophageal gastric cancer after RYGB in 64 cases revealed the common preoperative medical history include smoking habits (37.5%), alcohol issues (14.0%), GERD (86.0%), presence with Barret esophagus (10.9%), patients that has other malignant tumor medical history (6.3%), first-degree relatives (6.3%), or other family members with gastric esophagus cancer family history. Although the incidence of gastric cancer after RYGB is rare, the increasing prevalence of gastric cancer development is one of great concern. A rise in clinical cases of patients treated with RYGB presents a target for future studies. Risk of gastric cancer after RYGB should be evaluated and considered in high-risk cases.

Abstract
The reconstruction of tactile function during the repair of skin damage caused by factors including burns is inseparable from the functional regeneration of tactile receptor Merkel cells. Merkel cells mainly exist in the basal layer of the epidermis and are closely connected with nerves to form Merkel cell-nerve complexes, which play an important role in biological organisms. A large number of studies have shown that Merkel cells conduct precise transmission of mechanical force stimuli through the mechanically gated ion channels PIEZO2, and perform the function of tactile receptors. In this paper, we discussed the characteristics of Merkel cells and analyzed the different subgroups that may possibly exist in this type of cells and their functions, at the same time, we investigated the animal model research of touch-related diseases and the clinical diseases related to touch, revealing the importance of Merkel cell function research.

Abstract
Native language background exerts constraints on the individual's brain automatic response while learning a second language. It remains unclear, however, whether second language immersion experience could help the brain overcome such constraints and meet the requirements of a second language. This study compared native Chinese speakers with English-as-a-second-language immersion experience (immersive English learners), native Chinese speakers without English-as-a-second-language immersion experience (nonimmersive English learners), and native English speakers with an ERP cross-modal MMN paradigm. The results found that English-as-a-second-language immersion could benefit speech perception for native Chinese speakers. In addition, both immersive English learners and native English speakers showed enhanced cross-modal MMN, indicating that second language immersion could help native Chinese speakers successfully integrate English letter-sound like native English speakers. The present study further revealed that English listening and speaking exposure in an immersive environment is important in English letter-sound integration for immersive English learners.

Abstract
Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a crucial disease for wheat worldwide and constantly threatens wheat production in southwestern and northwestern China, where the environment is a good fit for Pst oversummering and overwintering. However, the underlying genetic dynamics of spring epidemic Pst populations across large areas of continuous planting in the southwestern and northwestern regions are poorly understood. A total of 2,103 Pst isolates were sampled in the spring of 2019 from the two agroecosystems and grouped into three horizontal spatial scales (countywide, provincial, and regional subpopulations) and two vertical spatial scales that consisted of elevational and geomorphic subpopulations. A total of 776 multilocus genotypes were identified, with the highest genetic diversity found in the northern and Sichuan populations, particularly in the Ningxia and Sichuan Basins, while the lowest genetic diversity was found in the Yunnan and Guizhou populations. Multivariate discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) and STRUCTURE (STRUCTURE 2.3.4) analyses revealed variation in the genotypic compositions of the molecular groups on horizontal and vertical dimensions from north to south or vice versa and from low to high or vice versa, respectively. The regional neighbor-joining tree revealed three large spatial structures consisting of the southwestern, the northwestern, and the Xinjiang regions, while the Tibetan population connected the southwestern and northwestern regions. The isolates of the Sichuan Basin were scattered over the four quartiles by principal coordinate analysis, which indicated frequent genotype interchange with others. Greater genetic differentiation was observed between the southwestern and northwestern regions. Linkage equilibrium (P ≥ 0.05) was detected on different spatial scales, suggesting that Pst populations are using sexual reproduction or mixed reproduction (sexual and clonal reproduction) in southwestern and northwestern China. IMPORTANCE Understanding the epidemiology and population genetics of plant pathogens is crucial to formulate efficient predictions of disease outbreaks and achieve sustainable integrated disease management, especially for pathogens with migratory capability. Here, this study covers the genetic homogeneity and heterogeneity of different geographical Pst populations on broad to fine spatial scales from the key epidemic regions of the two agroecosystems in China, where wheat stripe rust occurs annually. We provide knowledge of the population genetics of Pst and reveal that, for instance, there is greater genetic diversity in northwestern China, there are close genetic relationships between Yunnan and Guizhou and between Gansu-Ningxia and Qinghai, and there are effects of altitude on genetic compositions, etc. All of these findings clarify the genetic relationships and expand the insights into the population dynamics and evolutionary mechanisms of Pst in southwestern and northwestern China, providing a theoretical basis for achieving sustainable control of wheat stripe rust in key epidemic regions.

Abstract
The work describes a novel, small-molecule phytochemicals as nanomaterials based pro-micelles (pro-phytomicelles) drug delivery system, for oral delivery of carvedilol (CAR). This novel nanoformulation of CAR, named CAR pro-phytomicelles, was prepared with rebaudioside A (RA) and dipotassium glycyrrhizinate (DG) as mixed nanomaterials. The formulation was optimized, leading to a 502-fold increase in solubility of CAR in water as a result of encapsulation within mixed phytomicelles based on DG and RA. CAR pro-phytomicelles samples could be instantly dissolved into aqueous media to formulate clear phytomicelle solutions with CAR encapsulation efficiency of 99.67 ± 0.02 %, and small micelle size of 15.62 ± 0.27 nm. CAR pro-phytomicelles exhibited good storage stability, rapid in vitro release in simulated intestinal fluid, and improved in vitro antioxidant activity. CAR pro-phytomicelles had good biocompatibility. Protective efficacy evaluation revealed that acetaminophen overdose could induce high mortality and severe liver injury in mice, while CAR pro-phytomicelle treatment exhibited significant protective effect against acetaminophen overdose. This protective efficacy was due to a mechanism that involved the regulation of high-mobility group box 1 and its signaling-related proinflammatory cytokines. These results show that pro-phytomicelles could provide a new concept and promising therapeutics as nanomedicines for improving the activities of CAR against acetaminophen-induced liver injury.

Gender differences in the associations of circulating erythrocytes and hemoglobin with hypertension risk. Blood Press Monit 2022; 27:227-232. [PMID: 35258019 DOI: 10.1097/mbp.0000000000000592] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/27/2022]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies on associations of erythrocytes parameters with hypertension risk are scarce. We aimed to examine associations of the erythrocytes parameters with the hypertension risk and potential effect modification by gender using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. METHODS A total of 5419 eligible participants (2468 men, 45.5%) without hypertension at baseline in 2009 were included and followed for a median of 6.1 years. Parameters of erythrocytes and hemoglobin were measured at baseline. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratio for the associations between these parameters and hypertension risk. Data were collected from 2009 to 2015 and analyzed in 2021. RESULTS A total of 1178 incident cases of hypertension were identified during the follow-up. In women, erythrocytes and hemoglobin were positively associated with risk of hypertension, yielding the highest hazard ratio in the third quartile of 1.59 (95% confidence interval, 1.28-1.97, P trend < 0.001) for erythrocytes and in the fourth quartile of 1.64 (95% confidence interval, 1.23-2.17, P trend < 0.001) for hemoglobin compared with their first quartile, respectively. In addition, quartiles of erythrocytes and hemoglobin were not associated with risk of hypertension in men ( P trend > 0.050). CONCLUSION Erythrocytes and hemoglobin were associated with an increased risk of hypertension in women, but not in men. Our findings suggest that special attention for the prevention of hypertension should be given to those women with the moderate to high level of circulating erythrocytes and higher level of hemoglobin.

Abstract
The sciarid fly Bradysia odoriphaga is a serious pest of Chinese chive (Liliaceae). Neonicotinoid insecticides including thiamethoxam have been used for B. odoriphaga control. However, thiamethoxam resistance in B. odoriphaga has developed in recent years. To identify potential genes involved in detoxification metabolism of thiamethoxam in B. odoriphaga, a PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) transcriptome sequencing and Illumina RNA-seq analysis on thiamethoxam treated B. odoriphaga were performed to explore differentially expressed genes in B. odoriphaga. After SMRT sequencing, analysis of Illumina RNA-Seq data showed a total of 172 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after thiamethoxam treatment, among which eight upregulated DEGs were P450 genes that may be related to thiamethoxam metabolism. The qRT-PCR results of the eight up-regulated P450 unigenes after thiamethoxam treatment were consistent with RNA-Seq data. Furthermore, oral delivery mediated RNA interference of the eight upregulated P450 transcripts followed by insecticide bioassay was conducted, and three P450 unigenes were verified to be related to thiamethoxam detoxification in B. odoriphaga. This study provides new information about the P450 genes involved in thiamethoxam detoxification in B. odoriphaga.

Abstract
ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the association between dietary patterns and hypertension based on a community–based survey in Suzhou, Eastern China.MethodsThis cross–sectional analysis was undertaken from the subset of the Suzhou Food Consumption and Health State Survey in 2018–2019. Adults aged ≥ 18 years were invited to participate in this survey. Dietary intake was collected by a 24–h dietary recall and a weighing method over three consecutive days (including two weekdays and one weekend day). Dietary patterns were defined using factor analysis. Association between the dietary patterns and hypertension was examined by multivariable logistic regression models with adjustment for covariates. Moreover, sensitivity analysis was used to reinforce our findings.ResultsA total of 2,718 participants were included in the final analysis. Rice-vegetable pattern, fast food pattern, fruit-dairy pattern, and wheat-meat pattern were identified. We observed that the fruit-dairy pattern was inversely associated with hypertension after adjustment for all the covariates (OR = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.75; P = 0.002). The association between the wheat-meat pattern and hypertension was attenuated and became statistically nonsignificant in sensitivity analyses. The other two patterns were not significantly associated with hypertension (P > 0.05).ConclusionThe fruit-dairy pattern was inversely associated with the risk of hypertension among Chinese adults. Our findings further emphasize the important role of optimal diet combination in the prevention of hypertension.

IGF2BP3 enhances the mRNA stability of E2F3 by interacting with LINC00958 to promote endometrial carcinoma progression. Cell Death Discov 2022; 8:279. [PMID: 35676262 PMCID: PMC9177600 DOI: 10.1038/s41420-022-01045-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 14] [Impact Index Per Article: 7.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/03/2022] [Revised: 04/20/2022] [Accepted: 04/26/2022] [Indexed: 11/21/2022] Open
Abstract
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important regulatory roles in a variety of pathological processes involving cancer. However, the exact molecular mechanisms of lncRNA regulation in endometrial carcinoma (EC) remain poorly defined. The aim of this study was to illustrate the mechanism of LINC00958 in regulating the function of IGF2BP3, an RNA binding protein involved in mRNA stability, and their clinical implications in EC. First, we investigated the clinical role of IGF2BP3 in EC and demonstrated its prognostic value. Loss-of-function and gain-of-function studies showed that IGF2BP3 promoted EC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Then, we carried out RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (RIP-seq) analysis, RNA pulldown and immunofluorescence-RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization to identify LINC00958 that interacted with IGF2BP3 in the cytoplasm of EC cells. Rescue experiments indicated that knockdown of LINC00958 partially offset the EC cell progression mediated by IGF2BP3. After that, RNA sequencing was used to screen out the downstream genes of IGF2BP3 and LINC00958. The results revealed that IGF2BP3 upregulated E2F3 expression by interacting with LINC00958. Furthermore, RNA stability assays demonstrated that silencing LINC00958 partially rescued the IGF2BP3-mediated promoting effect on the mRNA stability of E2F3. Collectively, this study suggests that LINC00958, as an oncogene, assists IGF2BP3 in stabilizing E2F3 mRNA and ultimately promotes EC progression, providing a promising therapeutic target for patients with EC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE T cells display significant phenotypical changes and play multiple roles in promoting the immune response in SLE. The frequencies of T cell subpopulations in SLE are still not well understood. To better understanding the phenotypic abnormalities of T cells in SLE will help us to clarify disease immunopathology and to find promising biomarkers for disease monitoring and control. METHODS Peripheral blood CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and their subsets were determined by flow cytometry. Forty-one active SLE patients were selected, including 28 new-onset patients and 13 relapsing patients. One hundred healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled as the control group. The percentages of these cell subsets between patients with SLE and HCs and their relationships with disease activity and autoantibody titers were analysed. Thirteen of 28 new-onset SLE patients were assessed before and after treatment. The changes in the frequencies of these cell subsets and their relationships with renal response were analysed. RESULTS There was a broad range of anomalies in the proportion of T cell subsets in patients with SLE compared with that of the HCs. Compared with the HCs, a higher frequency of memory T cells and a lower frequency of naïve T cells were noted in patients with SLE. In addition, an imbalance of CD28+ and CD28- cells in CD4+ T cells was observed in patients with SLE. We found that the expanded CD4+CD28- T cells did not decrease after treatment in patients who had impaired renal responses. It was very interesting to exhibit a negative correlation in the frequency between the CD4+CD28- T cells and T regulatory (Treg) cells and a positive correlation between the frequency of CD4+CD28+ T cells and Treg cells in this study. Increased CD8+HLADR+ T cell and CD8+CD38+HLADR+ T cell counts were observed in patients with SLE, suggesting an impaired cytotoxic capacity of CD8+ T cells in SLE. Additionally, we found that CD8+CD38+HLADR+ T cells were closely associated with disease activity, autoantibody titres and renal prognosis. CD4+ CXCR5-PD1+ T cells were expanded in patients with SLE in this study and were associated with disease activity in SLE. Th1 (T helper type 1) cells and Treg cells were decreased, but frequencies of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, Th2 cells, Th17 cells and Tfh17 cells were increased. A strong correlation between Th17 cells and Tregs with renal involvement was observed in this study. CONCLUSION The proportions of CD4+CD28- T cells, CD4+CXCR5-PD1+ T cells, CD8+HLADR+ T cells and CD8+CD38+HLADR+ T cells increased in patients with SLE and could be associated with disease activity and renal prognosis.

Abstract
The present research aims to evaluate the expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in uterine leiomyoma, and explore its relationship with the occurrence and development of uterine leiomyoma and potential signal pathways. QRT-PCR and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used for estimating the levels of IGF-1 in human uterine leiomyoma compared to myometrium. The expression of cell proliferation and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway related proteins in uterine leiomyoma cells were evaluated by Western blot. Cell viability analysis was performed by CCK-8 assay. Lentivirus infection was used for IGF-1 overexpression and knockdown in uterine leiomyoma cells. IGF-1 expression level was elevated in human uterine leiomyomas compared to myometrium. IGF-1 promoted the cell viability of human uterine leiomyoma cells. Overexpression of IGF-1 induced the expression of pro-proliferation markers including c-Myc, PCNA and cyclin D1 in uterine leiomyoma cells. IGF-1 elevated the phosphorylation levels of PI3K, AKT and mTOR, thus modifying PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling in uterine leiomyoma cells. IGF-1 promotes human uterine leiomyoma cells proliferation via PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

To compare the effectiveness and safety of edoxaban in AF patients with or without a history of ICH.
Methods
The Global ETNA-AF programme is composed of and, thus, integrates data from multiple prospective, observational, and noninterventional regional studies collecting data of AF patients treated with edoxaban for stroke prevention. This snapshot analysis presents global and regional baseline characteristics with medical history and 2-year annualised rates of all-cause mortality, stroke (haemorrhagic, ischaemic, any), and bleeding (major bleeding [MB] including ICH, clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding [CRNMB], any bleeding), in patients with or without ICH history.
Results
Overall, 27,333 patients from Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were analysed, including 367 with prior ICH and 26,966 without prior ICH. There were proportionally fewer patients with a history of ICH in the European population. Patients with a history of ICH were older (P=0.006), had a lower body mass index (P<0.0001), had a lower creatinine clearance (P=0.0001), and had more comorbidities, with a higher percentage of patients with a history of stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA), or MB (Table 1); the higher level of comorbidities noted in patients with a history of ICH was also reflected by higher baseline CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores (Table 1). Patients with a history of ICH were more likely receiving 30 mg edoxaban at baseline, whereas patients without ICH history were more often on 60 mg edoxaban (each P<0.0001). In patients with vs without ICH history, all-cause mortality (5.10% vs 3.14%; P=0.01), ischaemic stroke (1.79% vs 0.73%; P=0.006), and any stroke rates (3.25% vs 0.95%; P<0.0001) were higher (Table 2). Patients with vs without ICH history had higher annualised rates of MB (2.50% vs 1.00%; P=0.001), ICH (1.42% vs 0.27%; P<0.0001), haemorrhagic stroke (1.42% vs 0.20%; P<0.0001), CRNMB (2.49% vs 1.40%; P=0.04), and any bleeding (7.57% vs 4.27%; P=0.001), but these rates were low compared to other high-risk populations. ICH was not selected as a predictor of cardiovascular outcomes on multivariate prediction modelling. ICH had non-significant effects in predicting all-cause death (HR 1.22), ischemic stroke (HR 1.14), and major bleeding (HF 1.37) and repeat ICH (HR 1.94).
Conclusions
Patients with a history of ICH are a small, elderly, multimorbid subgroup of patients with AF. Treatment with the non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant edoxaban resulted in relatively low rates of major events.

Air Pollutants and Asthma Hospitalization in the Medicaid Population. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2022; 205:1075-1083. [PMID: 35073244 PMCID: PMC9851478 DOI: 10.1164/rccm.202107-1596oc] [Citation(s) in RCA: 13] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/04/2021] [Accepted: 01/21/2022] [Indexed: 01/23/2023] Open
Abstract
Rationale: Risk of asthma hospitalization and its disparities associated with air pollutant exposures are less clear within socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, particularly at low degrees of exposure. Objectives: To assess effects of short-term exposures to fine particulate matter (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ⩽2.5 μm [PM2.5]), warm-season ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on risk of asthma hospitalization among national Medicaid beneficiaries, the most disadvantaged population in the United States, and to test whether any subpopulations were at higher risk. Methods: We constructed a time-stratified case-crossover dataset among 1,627,002 hospitalizations during 2000-2012 and estimated risk of asthma hospitalization associated with short-term PM2.5, O3, and NO2 exposures. We then restricted the analysis to hospitalizations with degrees of exposure below increasingly stringent thresholds. Furthermore, we tested effect modifications by individual- and community-level characteristics. Measurements and Main Results: Each 1-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, 1-ppb increase in O3, and 1-ppb increase in NO2 was associated with 0.31% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.24-0.37%), 0.10% (95% CI, 0.05 - 0.15%), and 0.28% (95% CI, 0.24 - 0.32%) increase in risk of asthma hospitalization, respectively. Low-level PM2.5 and NO2 exposures were associated with higher risk. Furthermore, beneficiaries with only one asthma hospitalization during the study period or in communities with lower population density, higher average body mass index, longer distance to the nearest hospital, or greater neighborhood deprivation experienced higher risk. Conclusions: Short-term air pollutant exposures increased risk of asthma hospitalization among Medicaid beneficiaries, even at concentrations well below national standards. The subgroup differences suggested individual and contextual factors contributed to asthma disparities under effects of air pollutant exposures.

Abstract
Electrides have valence electrons that occupy free space in the crystal structure, making them easier to extract. This feature can be used in catalysis for important reactions that usually require a high-temperature and high-pressure environments, such as ammonia synthesis. In this paper, we use density functional theory to investigate the behaviour of interstitial electrons of the 1-dimensional electride Sr3CrN3. We find that the bulk excess electron density persists on introduction of surface terminations, that the crystal termination perpendicular to the 1D free-electron channel is highly stable and we confirm an extremely low work function with hybrid functional methods. Our results indicate that Sr3CrN3 is a potentially important novel catalyst, with accessible, directional and extractable free electron density.

Recurrent umbilical varix rupture with hemoperitoneum: a case report and review of literature. BMC Gastroenterol 2022; 22:160. [PMID: 35365084 PMCID: PMC8973573 DOI: 10.1186/s12876-022-02167-3] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/21/2021] [Accepted: 02/15/2022] [Indexed: 11/10/2022] Open
Abstract
Background Non-traumatic hemoperitoneum was a rare event with the risk of sudden death. Spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma is the most intuitive diagnosis when hemoperitoneum occurs in cirrhotic patients who are not regularly followed up. However, other etiologies of hemoperitoneum, such as intra-abdominal varix rupture, should be kept in mind.
Case presentation A 44-year-old man with alcoholic liver cirrhosis, Child–Pugh B was sent to our emergency department (ED) because of recurrent abdominal pain and hypovolemic shock. He had similar symptoms one month ago and was diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) rupture with hemoperitoneum, therefore he underwent trans-arterial embolization (TAE). However, the follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed less possibility of hepatocellular carcinoma. Contrast enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed possible umbilical vein contrast agent extravasation. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed the diagnosis of rupture umbilical varix with hemoperitoneum. Conclusion Although umbilical varix rupture is a rare cause of hemoperitoneum, it should be kept in mind in cirrhotic patients with unexplained hemoperitoneum. How Are Consumers Affected by Taste and Hygiene Ratings When Ordering Food Online? A Behavioral and Event-Related Potential Study. Front Neurosci 2022; 16:844027. [PMID: 35386593 PMCID: PMC8978544 DOI: 10.3389/fnins.2022.844027] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/27/2021] [Accepted: 02/10/2022] [Indexed: 11/25/2022] Open
Abstract
With the rapid development of the take-out industry, taste and hygiene ratings as social-based information have been frequently used by online food-ordering platforms to facilitate consumer purchases. The present study aims to uncover the effects of taste and hygiene ratings on online food-ordering decision by incorporating behavioral and neural approaches. The behavioral results showed that a high taste rating induced a higher ordering intention than a low taste rating, and that a high hygiene rating induced a higher ordering intention than a low hygiene rating. The effect of hygiene rating on ordering intention was moderated by taste rating. Hygiene rating had a greater impact on ordering intention when the taste rating was high (vs. low). In addition, inconsistency between taste and hygiene ratings increased the cognitive load and took more time for decision-making. The event-related potential (ERP) data revealed that consumers paid more attention to a high (vs. low) taste rating in the early cognitive process, which was reflected by a larger P2. Subsequently, a more negative N2 was elicited by conflicting ratings than consistent ratings when the taste rating was low. In the relatively late decision-making process, a larger P3 was evoked by consistent than conflicting ratings, suggesting that consumers had more confidence in their decisions for consistent ratings. These findings could help restaurants understand the roles of taste and hygiene rating cues in affecting consumer behavior and prompt those restaurants to adopt effective measures to increase online sales.

Depression and Reasoning Ability in Adolescents: Examining the Moderating Role of Growth Mindset. Front Psychol 2022; 13:636368. [PMID: 35360598 PMCID: PMC8964125 DOI: 10.3389/fpsyg.2022.636368] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/01/2021] [Accepted: 02/08/2022] [Indexed: 11/28/2022] Open
Abstract
The present two-year longitudinal study aimed to examine the relationship between depression and reasoning ability in adolescents, and further investigated the modulation effect of growth mindset on this relationship. A total of 1,961 and 1,667 Chinese adolescents participated in the study for the first year (T1) and second year (T2), respectively. The results showed that T1 depression was negatively correlated with T1 growth mindset (r = -0.35, p < 0.001), T1 reasoning (r = -0.30, p < 0.001), and T2 reasoning (r = -0.23, p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed that T1 depression and the interaction between T1 depression and T1 growth mindset significantly predicted T1 reasoning (β = -0.220/-0.044, all ps < 0.05). After controlling for gender, age, family socioeconomic status, and T1 reasoning ability, both T1 depression and the interaction between T1 depression and T1 growth mindset still significantly predicted T2 reasoning (β = -0.104/β = 0.054, all ps < 0.05). The simple slope analysis found that the negative correlation between depression and reasoning in the high growth mindset group was weaker than that of the low growth mindset group in both T1 and T2, suggesting that growth mindset plays a significant moderating role in the relationship between depression and reasoning. In conclusion, depression was negatively correlated with reasoning ability in adolescents, in addition, growth mindset moderated the relationship between depression and reasoning.

Associations between Air Pollution and Psychiatric Symptoms in The Normative Aging Study. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH LETTERS : ERL [WEB SITE] 2022; 17:034004. [PMID: 35273649 PMCID: PMC8903151 DOI: 10.1088/1748-9326/ac47c5] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 05/15/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Environmental risk factors for psychiatric health are poorly identified. We examined the association between air pollution and psychiatric symptoms, which are often precursors to the development of psychiatric disorders. METHODS This study included 570 participants in the US Veterans Administration (VA) Normative Aging Study and 1,114 visits (defined as an onsite follow-up at the VA with physical examination and questionnaires) from 2000-2014 with information on the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) to assess their psychiatric symptom levels. Differences in the three BSI global measures (Global Severity Index - GSI, Positive Symptom Distress Index - PSDI and Positive Symptom Total - PST) were reported per interquartile (IQR) increase of residential address-specific air pollutants levels (fine particulate matter - PM2.5, ozone - O3, nitrogen dioxide - NO2) at averages of 1 week, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 1 year prior to the visit using generalized additive mixed effects models. We also evaluated modification by neighborhood factors. RESULTS On average, among the NAS sample (average age, 72.4 yrs. (standard deviation: 6.7 yrs.)), an IQR increase in 1- and 4- week averages of NO2 before visit was associated with a PSDI T score (indicator for psychiatric symptom intensity) increase of 1.60 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.31, 2.89), 1.71 (95% CI: 0.18, 3.23), respectively. Similarly, for each IQR increase in 1- and 4-week averages of ozone before visit, PSDI T-score increased by 1.66 (95% CI: 0.68, 2.65), and 1.36 (95% CI: 0.23, 2.49), respectively. Stronger associations were observed for ozone and PSDI in low house value and low household income areas. No associations were found for PM2.5. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to gaseous air pollutants was associated with higher intensity of psychiatric symptoms among a cohort of older men, particularly in communities with lower socio-economic or housing conditions.
