Abstract
Nanoglasses are solids consisting of nanometer-sized glassy regions connected by interfaces having a reduced density. We studied the structure of Sc(75)Fe(25) nanoglasses by electron microscopy, positron annihilation spectroscopy, and small-/wide-angle X-ray scattering. The positron annihilation spectroscopy measurements showed that the as-prepared nanoglasses consisted of 65 vol% glassy and 35 vol% interfacial regions. By applying temperature annealing to the nanoglasses and measuring in situ small-angle X-ray scattering, we observed that the width of the interfacial regions increased exponentially as a function of the annealing temperature. A quantitative fit to the small-angle X-ray scattering data using a Debye-Bueche random phase model gave a correlation length that is related to the sizes of the interfacial regions in the nanoglass. The correlation length was found to increase exponentially from 1.3 to 1.7 nm when the sample temperature was increased from 25 to 230 °C. Using simple approximations, we correlate this to an increase in the width of interfacial regions from 0.8 to 1.2 nm, while the volume fraction of interfacial regions increased from 31 to 44%. Using micro-compression measurements, we investigated the deformation behavior of ribbon glass and the corresponding nanoglass. While the nanoglass exhibited a remarkable plasticity even in the annealed state owing to the glass-glass interfaces, the corresponding ribbon glass was brittle. As this difference seems not limited to Sc(75)Fe(25) glasses, the reported result suggest that nanoglasses open the way to glasses with high ductility resulting from the nanometer sized microstructure.

High resolution ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging of the optic nerve and the optic nerve sheath: anatomic correlation and clinical importance. ULTRASCHALL IN DER MEDIZIN (STUTTGART, GERMANY : 1980) 2011; 32:608-613. Abstract
PURPOSE We performed a cadaver study to evaluate the accuracy of measurements of the optic nerve and the optic nerve sheath for high resolution US (HRUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS Five Thiel-fixated cadaver specimens of the optic nerve were examined with HRUS and MRI. Measurements of the optic nerve and the ONSD were performed before and after the filling of the optic nerve sheath with saline solution. Statistical analysis included the calculation of the agreement of measurements and the evaluation of the intraobserver and interobserver variation. RESULTS Overall a good correlation of measurement values between HRUS and MRI can be found (mean difference: 0.02-0.97 mm). The repeatability coefficient (RC) and concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) values were good to excellent for most acquisitions (RC 0.2-1.11 mm; CCC 0.684-0.949). The highest variation of measurement values was found for transbulbar sonography (RC 0.58-1.83 mm; CCC 0.615/0.608). CONCLUSION If decisive anatomic structures are clearly depicted and the measuring points are set correctly, there is a good correlation between HRUS and MRI measurements of the optic nerve and the ONSD even on transbulbar sonography. As most of the standard and cut-off values that have been published for ultrasound are significantly lower than the results obtained with MRI, a reevaluation of sonographic ONSD measurement with correlation to MRI is necessary.

Abstract
Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) is a tumor of the skeletal muscle in children and is frequently initiated by heterozygous germline mutations in the Hedgehog (Hh) receptor Patched1 (Ptch), both in humans and mice. Using a conditional knock-out strategy in Ptch(flox/+) mice, we demonstrate that early embryonic stages are more susceptible to ERMS development than later stages and that cells normally not committed to undergo myogenesis at this stage represent the major source of ERMS. We found that deletion of a single copy of the Ptch allele at E9.5 using the ubiquitously active Rosa26CreERT2 resulted in a tumor incidence of 88% but reached only 44% and 12% when the Ptch allele was inactivated at E11.5 and E13.5, respectively. Induction of the Ptch mutation at E9.5 did also significantly shorten ERMS-free survival and increased tumor multiplicity compared with tumor induction at E11.5 and E13.5. Interestingly, we observed a more that 10-fold reduction of ERMS incidence when the Ptch mutation was specifically introduced in Myf5-expressing cells, which is the myogenic factor expressed in all muscle cells at E9.5. We conclude that Myf5-negative cells are more susceptible to ERMS development than Myf5-positive embryonic precursors. As the propensity to undergo tumorigenic transformation declined with age, concomitant with the increase of stably committed muscle cells, it seems likely that the Ptch mutation favors tumor formation in progenitor cells, which have not yet acquired a muscle cell fate.

Abstract
An electrically controlled ultra-compact surface plasmon polariton absorption modulator (SPPAM) is proposed. The device can be as small as a few micrometers depending on the required extinction ratio and the acceptable loss. The device allows for operation far beyond 100 Gbit/s, being only limited by RC time constants. The absorption modulator comprises a stack of metal/insulator/metal-oxide/metal layers, which support a strongly confined asymmetric surface plasmon polariton (SPP) in the 1.55 μm telecommunication wavelength window. Absorption modulation is achieved by electrically modulating the free carrier density in the intermediate metal-oxide layer. The concept is supported by proof-of-principle experiments.

Abstract
ABSTRACTNanocrystalline ceramics have been produced by the method of inert gas condensation of ultra-small particles and in situ consolidation. Sintering characteristics and microstructural parameter such as grain size, porosity and pore size distributions have been investigated by a variety of techniques, including: X-ray diffraction, gravimetry, nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy and small angle neutron scattering. In pure TiO2, the sintering temperatures are drastically lowered compared to conventional ceramics, however, extensive grain growth occurs before full densification is achieved. High density, nanocrystalline ceramics can be prepared by pressure assisted sintering, doping and additions of second phases. High temperature microhardness and creep deformation in compression were measured and it was found that creep processes occur at lower temperatures than in ceramics with larger grain sizes. Nanocrystalline TiO2 with densities > 99 % can be deformed plastically without fracture at temperatures below half the melting point. The total strains exceed 0.6 at strain rates as high as 10−3 s−1. The stress exponent of the strain rate, n, is approximately 3 and the grain size dependence is G-q with q in the range of 1 – 1.5. It is concluded that the creep deformation occurs by an interface reaction controlled mechanism.

Abstract
AbstractA new class of materials with ultra small grain size has recently been synthesized by combining the methods of inert gas condensation of metal vapors and in situ powder compaction. These ‘nanocrystalline’ materials, with grain sizes of 5-10 nm, can have over 30% of their atoms lying in the highly disordered interfaces or grain boundaries. Because of their unique atomic structure, nanocrystalline materials often have properties far different from their bulk counterparts. In addition, kinetic processes can be rapidly accelerated due to the short diffusion distances between grains. In this review, we will report on the thermodynamic properties and reaction kinetics of nanocrystalline metals and on such kinetic properties as sintering and grain growth in nanocrystalline ceramics.

Abstract
ABSTRACTNanophase titanium, prepared by the gas-condensation method both as aggregated powder and in lightly compacted discs, has been studied by conventional small angle neutron scattering, and by use of contrast variation methods. The contrast has been changed (a), isotopically, by means of deuterated/protonated solvents distilled into the specimen and (b) by progressive incremental oxidation of the Ti particles using fixed doses of low-pressure oxygen. It was shown that some evolution of the small angle pattern for lightly compacted nanophase Ti occurred over a period of several months at 300 K. Contrast matching by external solvent works well and has allowed the scattering lengths of oxidized and unoxidized specimens to be followed. The results imply that the scattering from metal and oxide can be separated under suitable conditions. The partial oxidation experiments indicate that there is both a fast and slow oxidation at 300 K. Also, during slow oxidation, high scattering length density scattering centers were formed whose number increased, but whose size remained the same at about 2 nm; these centers are tentatively assumed to be TiO2.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe sintering and deformation kinetics of nanocrystalline (n-) TiO2 were studied. It was found that pressureless sintering yields densities above 95 % with modest increase in grain size whereas pressure assisted sintering (1GPa) results in high density samples without grain growth. In addition compression tests were performed. Large true strains up to 0.6 and strain rates as high as 8 × 10−5 s−1 were observed at 810 °C without fracturing. The sintering and creep results are discussed in terms of the microstructure and diffusion coefficients in n-TiO2.

Abstract
Constant development enabled Infrared (IR) spectroscopy to become a widely used, non-invasive tool for fast sample analyses with less to no pre-preparation. Furthermore, computational data handling is no more a limiting factor and hence, IR measurements are predestined for clinical diagnostics and drug analysis. Within this review the focus was put on clinical topics of high interest. One example is Alzheimer's disease, where the exact metabolism is still not clarified, or blood glucose monitoring for high throughput screening of patients without taking any drop of blood. The second section of this manuscript was focused on the analysis of drugs. The detection of physico-chemical parameters in pharmaceutics and the improvement of industrial proceedings allowed a dramatic increase of quality of produced medicine. In pharmaceutical industries problems with the equable allocation of agents occurs especially in scaling up processes. IR-analyzing-techniques serve as fast and precise indicators for the detection of active components and their distribution in tablets. In combination with statistical factors and medical investigations pharmaceuticals can be improved from their development until their application, and every step can be easily controlled by IR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Morphological changes involving mononuclear phagocytes in Listeria-infected mice after treatment with dextran sulfate 500 were investigated. Mononuclear phagocytes in livers and spleens, both circulating monocytes and fixed macrophages, showed uptake of electron-dense material. Mononuclear phagocyte changes were most pronounced within granulomatous lesions, where many phagocytes showed large membrane-bound inclusions and extensive cellular damage. It is concluded that dextran sulfate 500 selectively damages mononuclear phagocytes and that, in listerial infection, dextran sulfate 500 renders mononuclear phagocytes unable to express cellular resistance.

Abstract
Injection of dextran sulfate 500 caused loss of antibacterial resistance. Mice became more susceptible to an infection with Listeria monocytogenes and were unable to develop antilisterial immunity after both active and passive immunization with passively administered spleen cells from Listeria-immune donors. Indirect evidence suggests that the phagocytic component of cell-mediated resistance to bacterial infection is the site of attack of dextran sulfate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious threat to public health in Russia and other former Soviet Union Countries. The purpose of this paper is to describe the current trends of TB and MDR-TB in Russia and identify the characteristics of the traditional Russian TB control model inherited from the Soviet Union. We discuss current challenges to TB control in the country. METHODS WHO tuberculosis notification data were analysed for Russia and 14 other former Soviet Union countries. To investigate the characteristics of TB control in Russia, we performed a systematic literature review using MEDLINE/EMBASE databases. 136 articles were initially identified of which 66 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Full texts were reviewed. Additionally, we reviewed non-systematically Russian state reports, guidelines and legislations. RESULTS In 2006, nearly 125 000 TB cases and 28 000 TB deaths were notified in the Russian Federation. The TB notification rate was 13 times higher than in Germany. The characteristics of the traditional Russian TB control model include: a centralised disease-specific inpatient network for diagnosis and treatment of TB, countrywide population screenings using fluorography, a strong focus on X-ray for diagnosis and disease classification, individualised and lengthy inpatient care, high rates of drug resistance, and inefficient financing systems. CONCLUSIONS Current challenges to TB control in Russia are: the implementation of a quality-assured laboratory network for sputum-smear microscopy, culture and drug susceptibility testing, ensuring MDR-TB treatment and control, prevention and management of TB/HIV, and reform of health care financing systems. For TB control to be successful in the Russian Federation, the characteristics of the traditional TB control model need to be taken into account.

Abstract
Reversible tuning of the transport properties of metallic conducting systems is not reported widely in the literature. Here, we report a junction field-effect transistor (FET) based on a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) nanoparticle channel and a solid polymer electrolyte as a gate. The device principle is based on the variation of the drain current induced by the capacitive double layer charging at the electrolyte/nanoparticle interfaces. A device with a metallic conducting channel made of indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles exhibits an on/off ratio of 2 × 10(3) even when the gate potential is limited within the electrochemical capacitive region to avoid redox reactions at the interface. An FET device with metal-like conductance is always favored for the low dimensions of the device and a high on-state current. The field-effect mobility is calculated to be 24.3 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). A subthreshold swing between 230 and 425 mV dec(-1) is observed.

Abstract
PURPOSE The usefulness of whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) for the detection of skeletal lesions in patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis should be documented on the basis of case presentations. MATERIALS AND METHODS In six patients with histologically proven Langerhans cell histiocytosis, 14 WB-MRI examinations were performed to evaluate the skeletal system within disease staging (6 primary, 8 follow-up examinations). The examinations were performed on a 1.5 Tesla, 32-channel whole-body scanner. The examination protocol consisted of T 1-weighted and STIR sequences in coronal and sagittal orientation. For comparison, radiographs of the initial skeletal lesions and those that were additionally detected on WB-MRI were available. RESULTS In 4 patients no additional skeletal lesions were found on WB-MRI besides the initial lesion leading to the diagnosis of unifocal single system disease. In 2 patients WB-MRI was able to identify additional skeletal lesions. In a 5 S year-old boy with the primary lesion located in the cervical spine, a second lesion was detected in the lumbar spine on the initial scan and in the skull and proximal femur during follow-up examination. In a 12 year-old girl with a primary lesion of the thoracic spine, WB-MRI diagnosed additional lesions in the pelvic bone and the tibia. In both patients the diagnosis of multifocal skeletal involvement led to chemotherapy. During follow-up examination, the healing response under therapy could be demonstrated. Comparison with conventional imaging showed that especially lesions located in the spine or the pelvis were not detectable on radiographs even when knowing the MR results. CONCLUSION The extent of skeletal involvement in Langerhans cell histiocytosis has crucial impact on therapy and prognosis. Whole-body MRI has been reported to be an established method for the evaluation of disseminated skeletal disease with distinct advantages over conventional radiography and bone scintigraphy. Our results suggest that WB-MRI should also be the imaging modality of choice for the assessment of skeletal involvement in children with Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The frequency of depiction of the normal appendix by real time B-mode sonography in children was evaluated in a prospective study. MATERIALS AND METHODS In 274 consecutive patients, age one to nineteen, without abdominal pain, depiction of the normal appendix was attempted using a 5-12 MHz linear array transducer. The ultrasound examination was performed using the graded compression technique according to the description of Puylaert. Depiction of the normal appendix was graded as a) complete, b) partial and c) unable to be depicted. In addition the position and diameter of the appendix, the examination time and the image quality were documented. RESULTS The appendix was depicted completely in 74% of all patients and partially in 10%. In the age group of one to nine years, complete depiction was possible in 86% of the cases. The most common position with 87% was caudal and mediocaudal, 11% of the appendices were located retrocecal and 2% had a cranioventral position. The mean diameter of the appendices was 4.1 mm (range 3-7 mm). The mean examination time to depict the normal appendix completely was 3.7 min compared to 7.6 min in partial or incompletely depicted cases. In most cases in which complete depiction of the appendix was possible, the image quality was excellent. CONCLUSION Since the normal appendix in children can be reliably depicted by experienced examiners using high-resolution linear transducers, ultrasound is suitable as a reliable imaging modality for excluding acute appendicitis in children.

Abstract
The influence of lateral substituents was studied for a new series of bent-core liquid crystals with heptamethyltrisiloxane units at both ends of the aliphatic side chains. These materials were investigated by polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray scattering and electro-optical methods. An antiferroelectric switching columnar phase was found for the non-substituted compound. Different types of non-switching columnar phases were obtained for molecules having substituents (CH, NO) in the bay position, whereas a temperature-dependent transition from polar to non-polar smectic phases was found for molecules having substituents (Cl, CN) adjacent to one of the ester linking units. For the CN-substituted compound a new phase sequence SmCP-SmC-Cub-Iso was observed. The occurrence of the cubic phase is associated with a steric frustration due to the bulky silyl groups. The special rectangular columnar mesophase of the nitro-substituted compound is discussed with respect to its relation to B7-type mesophases.

Abstract
This study investigated the seroprevalence of antibodies against Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Berlin/Brandenburg, north-eastern Germany. During 1994-2001, 422 sera from patients with proven tick-exposure (specimens with antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi) were compared with 249 control sera. Using indirect fluorescent antibody testing, significantly more positive samples were detected among Borrelia antibody-positive specimens (4.5%, 95% CI 2.5-6.5%) than among controls (1.2%, 95% CI 0.5-1.9%; p < 0.05). While six (2.2%, 95% CI 1.3-3.1%) samples were positive among Borrelia antibody-positive sera between 1994 and 1997, 13 (8.7%, 95% CI 6.9-10.5%) were positive between 1998 and 2001 (p < 0.01), indicating an uneven annual seroprevalence.

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN)--effects of lipid composition on in vitro degradation and in vivo toxicity. DIE PHARMAZIE 2006; 61:539-44. Abstract
Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) composed of two different lipid matrices were produced to assess their in vivo toxicity in mice. Matrix substances were (i) Compritol (glycerol behenate), a physiological lipid with GRAS status (generally recognized as safe [FDA]), and (ii) cetyl palmitate, a less physiological compound. Physicochemical data proved the suitability of SLN batches for intravenous administration. To assess the in vivo toxicity of produced batches, 400 microl SLN dispersion (lipid content 10% [m/m]) were administered to mice via a bolus injection for six times within a period of 20 days (high dose administration). Additionally, a multiple low dose administration was performed with Compritol-SLN as well (200 microl SLN dispersion, lipid content 2.5% [m/m]). Hepatic and splenic tissues were analysed histologically. In vivo results were dependent on the lipid matrix, as well as on the dose administered. For cetyl palmitate containing SLN no pathological results were obtained, while high dosed Compritol containing formulations led to accumulation of the lipid in liver and spleen and subsequently to pathological alterations. These alterations were found to be partially reversible within six weeks after completing intravenous administration. Liver architecture was nearly recovered. In contrast, low dosed Compritol SLN were well tolerated. Lipid accumulation and pathological alterations of high dosed Compritol SLN were attributed to the slow degradation of the Compritol matrix which could be shown by performing in vitro studies in human plasma.

Abstract
Hemizygous Ptc1 mice have many features of Gorlin syndrome, including predisposition to medulloblastoma development. Ionizing radiation synergize with Ptc1 mutation to induce medulloblastoma only in neonatally exposed mice. To explore the mechanisms underlying age-dependent susceptibility, we irradiated Ptc(neo67/+) mice at postnatal day 1 (P1) or 10 (P10). We observed a dramatic difference in medulloblastoma incidence, which ranged from 81% in the cerebellum irradiated at P1 to 3% in the cerebellum irradiated at P10. A striking difference was also detected in the frequency of cerebellar preneoplastic lesions (100 versus 14%). Our data also show significantly lower induction of apoptosis in the cerebellum of medulloblastoma-susceptible (P1) compared to -resistant (P10) mice, strongly suggesting that medulloblastoma formation in Ptc1 mutants may be associated with resistance to radiation-induced cell killing. Furthermore, in marked contrast with P10 mice, cerebellum at P1 displays substantially increased activation of the cell survival-promoting Akt/Pkb protein, and markedly decreased p53 levels in response to radiation-induced genotoxic stress. Overall, these results show that developing cerebellar granule neuron precursors' (CGNPs) radiosensitivity to radiation-induced cell death increases with progressing development and inversely correlates with their ability to neoplastically transform.
