Abstract
Plasmon resonances of noble metal nanoparticles are used to enhance light-matter interactions in the nanoworld. The nanoparticles' optical response depends strongly on the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding medium. We show that the plasmon resonance energy of core-shell Au@Mo6 nanoparticles can be tuned from 2.4 to 1.6 eV by varying the thickness of their Mo6 cluster shells between zero and 70 nm, when the core diameter is fixed at 100 nm. We probe their plasmonic response by performing nanometer-resolution plasmon mapping on individual nanoparticles, using electron energy-loss spectroscopy inside a transmission electron microscope. Our experimental results are corroborated by numerical simulations performed using boundary element methods. The simulations predict a similar dependency for the extinction energy, showing that this effect could also be observed by light-optical experiments outside the electron microscope, although limited by the size distribution of the nanoparticles in solution and the substantial scattering effects.

Abstract
Abstract:
The binding of anions by highly-coloured chromophore compounds is of interest from the point-of-view of the development of optical sensors for analyte species. In this review, we have summarised our work on the interactions between oxoporphyrinogen type host compounds and different analyte species using computational methods. The origin of our interest in sensing using oxoporphyrinogens stems from an initial finding involving anion-host interactions involving a conjugated oxoporphyrinogen molecule. This review starts from that point, introducing some additional exemplary anion binding data, which is then elaborated to include descriptions of our synthesis work towards multitopic and ion pair interactions. In all the projects, we have consulted computational data on host structure and host-guest complexes in order to obtain information about the interactions occurring during complexation. Density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations have been extensively used for these purposes. Oxoporphyrinogens are highly colored synthetically flexible compounds whose interactions with anions, ion pairs, and other species have been modelled using computational methods.

Abstract
The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, through which monolayers are transferred from the air/water interface onto a solid substrate, was the first method to allow for the controlled assembly of organic molecules. With its almost 100 year history, it has been the inspiration for most methods to functionalize surfaces and produce nanocoatings, in addition to serving to explore concepts in molecular electronics and nanoarchitectonics. This paper provides an overview of the history of Langmuir monolayers and LB films, including the potential use in devices and a discussion on why LB films are seldom considered for practical applications today. Emphasis is then given to two areas where these films offer unique opportunities, namely, in mimicking cell membrane models and exploiting nanoarchitectonics concepts to produce sensors, investigate molecular recognitions, and assemble molecular machines. The most promising topics for the short- and long-term prospects of the LB technique are also highlighted.

Abstract
Materials science and chemistry have played a central and significant role in advancing society. With the shift toward sustainable living, it is anticipated that the development of functional materials will continue to be vital for sustaining life on our planet. In the recent decades, rapid progress has been made in materials science and chemistry owing to the advances in experimental, analytical, and computational methods, thereby producing several novel and useful materials. However, most problems in material development are highly complex. Here, the best strategy for the development of functional materials via the implementation of three key concepts is discussed: nanotechnology as a game changer, nanoarchitectonics as an integrator, and materials informatics as a super-accelerator. Discussions from conceptual viewpoints and example recent developments, chiefly focused on nanoporous materials, are presented. It is anticipated that coupling these three strategies together will open advanced routes for the swift design and exploratory search of functional materials truly useful for solving real-world problems. These novel strategies will result in the evolution of nanoporous functional materials.

Abstract
Like the proposal of nanotechnology by Richard Feynman, the nanoarchitectonics concept was initially proposed by Masakazu Aono. The nanoarchitectonics strategy conceptually fuses nanotechnology with other research fields including organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, micro/nanofabrication, materials science, and bio-related sciences, and aims to produce functional materials from nanoscale components. In this review article, bio-interactive nanoarchitectonics and two-dimensional materials and environments are discussed as a selected topic. The account gives general examples of nanoarchitectonics of two-dimensional materials for energy storage, catalysis, and biomedical applications, followed by explanations of bio-related applications with two-dimensional materials such as two-dimensional biomimetic nanosheets, fullerene nanosheets, and two-dimensional assemblies of one-dimensional fullerene nanowhiskers (FNWs). The discussion on bio-interactive nanoarchitectonics in two-dimensional environments further extends to liquid-liquid interfaces such as fluorocarbon-medium interfaces and viscous liquid interfaces as new frontiers of two-dimensional environments for bio-related applications. Controlling differentiation of stem cells at fluidic liquid interfaces is also discussed. Finally, a conclusive section briefly summarizes features of bio-interactive nanoarchitectonics with two-dimensional materials and environments and discusses possible future perspectives.

Abstract
Electro-catalytic activity of Pt in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) depends strongly on its morphology. For an understanding of how morphology affects the catalytic properties of Pt, the investigation of Pt materials having well-defined morphologies is required. However, the challenges remain in rational and facile synthesis of Pt particles with tuneable well-defined morphology. A promising approach for the controlled synthesis of Pt particles is 'self-assembly of building blocks'. Here, we report a unique synthesis method to control Pt morphology by using a self-assembly route, where nanoflower, nanowire, nanosheet and nanotube morphologies of Pt particles have been produced in a controlled manner. In the growth mechanism, Pt nanoparticles (5-11 nm) are rapidly prepared by using NaBH4 as a reductant, followed by their agglomeration promoted by adding 1,2-ethylenediamine. The morphology of the resulting Pt particles can be easily controlled by tuning hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions by the addition of isopropanol and H2O. Of the Pt particles prepared using this method, Pt nanotubes show the highest ORR catalytic activity in an acid electrolyte with an onset potential of 1.02 V vs. RHE.

Abstract
Nanoarchitectonics has emerged as a post-nanotechnology concept. As one of the applications of nanoarchitectonics, this review paper discusses the control of stem cell fate and function as an important issue. For hybrid nanoarchitectonics involving living cells, it is crucial to understand how biomaterials and their nanoarchitected structures regulate behaviours and fates of stem cells. In this review, biomaterials for the regulation of stem cell fate are firstly discussed. Besides multipotent differentiation, immunomodulation is an important biological function of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs can modulate immune cells to treat multiple immune- and inflammation-mediated diseases. The following sections summarize the recent advances of the regulation of the immunomodulatory functions of MSCs by biophysical signals. In the third part, we discussed how biomaterials direct the self-organization of pluripotent stem cells for organoid. Bioactive materials are constructed which mimic the biophysical cues of in vivo microenvironment such as elasticity, viscoelasticity, biodegradation, fluidity, topography, cell geometry, and etc. Stem cells interpret these biophysical cues by different cytoskeletal forces. The different cytoskeletal forces lead to substantial transcription and protein expression, which affect stem cell fate and function. Regulations of stem cells could not be utilized only for tissue repair and regenerative medicine but also potentially for production of advanced materials systems. Materials nanoarchitectonics with integration of stem cells and related biological substances would have high impacts in science and technology of advanced materials.

Abstract
Nanoarchitectonics approaches can produce functional materials from tiny units through combination of various processes including atom/molecular manipulation, chemical conversion, self-assembly/self-organization, microfabrication, and bio-inspired procedures. Existing fabrication approaches can be regarded as fitting into the same concept. In particular, the so-called layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method has huge potential for preparing applicable materials with a great variety of assembling mechanisms. LbL assembly is a multistep process where different components can be organized in planned sequences while simple alignment options provide access to superstructures, for example helical structures, and anisotropies which are important aspects of nanoarchitectonics. In this article, newly-featured examples are extracted from the literature on LbL assembly discussing trends for composite functional materials according to (i) principles and techniques, (ii) composite materials, and (iii) applications. We present our opinion on the present trends, and the prospects of LbL assembly. While this method has already reached a certain maturity, there is still plenty of room for expanding its usefulness for the fabrication of nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices.

Abstract
Biomass-derived activated carbon materials with hierarchically nanoporous structures containing nitrogen functionalities show excellent electrochemical performances and are explored extensively in energy storage and conversion applications. Here, we report the electrochemical supercapacitance performances of the nitrogen-doped activated carbon materials with an ultrahigh surface area prepared by the potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation of the Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus) seed in an aqueous electrolyte solution (1 M sulfuric acid: H2SO4) in a three-electrode cell. The specific surface areas and pore volumes of Lotus-seed-derived carbon materials carbonized at a different temperatures, from 600 to 1000 °C, are found in the range of 1059.6 to 2489.6 m2 g-1 and 0.819 to 2.384 cm3 g-1, respectively. The carbons are amorphous materials with a partial graphitic structure with a maximum of 3.28 atom% nitrogen content and possess hierarchically micro- and mesoporous structures. The supercapacitor electrode prepared from the best sample showed excellent electrical double-layer capacitor performance, and the electrode achieved a high specific capacitance of ca. 379.2 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 current density. Additionally, the electrode shows a high rate performance, sustaining 65.9% capacitance retention at a high current density of 50 A g-1, followed by an extraordinary long cycle life without any capacitance loss after 10,000 subsequent charging/discharging cycles. The electrochemical results demonstrate that Nelumbo nucifera seed-derived hierarchically porous carbon with nitrogen functionality would have a significant probability as an electrical double-layer capacitor electrode material for the high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract
For materials development with high-level structural regulations, the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics has been proposed. Analytical sciences, including sensing/detection, sensors, and related device construction, are active targets of the nanoarchitectonics approach. This review article focuses on the two features of interface and nanostructures are especially focused to discuss nanoarchitectonics for analytical science. Especially, two selected topics, (i) analyses on molecular sensing at interfaces and (ii) sensors using self-assembled supramolecular nanostructures, are exemplified in this review article. In addition to recent general examples, specific molecular recognition at the air-water interface and fabrication of sensing materials upon self-assembly of fullerene units are discussed. Descriptions of these examples indicate that nanoarchitectonics and analytical science share common benefits, and therefore, developments in both research fields should lead to synergies.

Abstract
An emerging concept, nanoarchitectonics, is supposed to work on the preparation of functional materials systems from nanoscale components. Because porphyrin derivatives show their importance in many research targets, discussions on nanoarchitectonics with porphyrins and related molecules would provide meaningful opportunities to consider effective usages of the nanoarchitectonics. This review article explains various examples of nanoarchitectonics approaches with porphyrin derivatives. The examples are especially focused on two topics: (i) materials nanoarchitectonics for nanofibers, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks; (ii) interfacial nanoarchitectonics for surface monolayers (self-assembled monolayers), Langmuir-Blodgett films, and layer-by-layer assemblies. Functions and properties can be enhanced upon their organization in specific dimensions and arrangements in nanostructured frameworks. In many cases, interface-specific organization would lead to advanced performances with high efficiency and specificity. Even though only limited examples are described here, various possibilities are actually suggested. Not limited to porphyrin families, nanoarchitectonics for functional materials has to be considered with a wide range of materials.

Abstract
Nanoarchitectonics is a universal concept to fabricate functional materials from nanoscale building units. Based on this concept, fabrications of functional materials with hierarchical structural motifs from simple nano units of fullerenes (C60 and C70 molecules) are described in this review article. Because fullerenes can be regarded as simple and fundamental building blocks with mono-elemental and zero-dimensional natures, these demonstrations for hierarchical functional structures impress the high capability of the nanoarchitectonics approaches. In fact, various hierarchical structures such as cubes with nanorods, hole-in-cube assemblies, face-selectively etched assemblies, and microstructures with mesoporous frameworks are fabricated by easy fabrication protocols. The fabricated fullerene assemblies have been used for various applications including volatile organic compound sensing, microparticle catching, supercapacitors, and photoluminescence systems.

Abstract
Nanoarchitectonics of two-dimensional materials from zero-dimensional fullerenes is mainly introduced in this short review. Fullerenes are simple objects with mono-elemental (carbon) composition and zero-dimensional structure. However, fullerenes and their derivatives can create various types of two-dimensional materials. The exemplified approaches demonstrated fabrications of various two-dimensional materials including size-tunable hexagonal fullerene nanosheet, two-dimensional fullerene nano-mesh, van der Waals two-dimensional fullerene solid, fullerene/ferrocene hybrid hexagonal nanosheet, fullerene/cobalt porphyrin hybrid nanosheet, two-dimensional fullerene array in the supramolecular template, two-dimensional van der Waals supramolecular framework, supramolecular fullerene liquid crystal, frustrated layered self-assembly from two-dimensional nanosheet, and hierarchical zero-to-one-to-two dimensional fullerene assembly for cell culture.

Abstract
In this review article, the recent examples of nanoarchitectonics on living cells are briefly explained. Not limited to conventional polymers, functional polymers, biomaterials, nanotubes, nanoparticles (conventional and magnetic ones), various inorganic substances, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and other advanced materials have been used as components for nanoarchitectonic decorations for living cells. Despite these artificial processes, the cells can remain active or remain in hibernation without being killed. In most cases, basic functions of the cells are preserved and their resistances against external assaults are much enhanced. The possibilities of nanoarchitectonics on living cells would be high, equal to functional modifications with conventional materials. Living cells can be regarded as highly functionalized objects and have indispensable contributions to future materials nanoarchitectonics.

Abstract
Edge-bridged halide tantalum clusters based on the {Ta6Br12}4+ core have been the topic of many physicostructural investigations both in solution and in the solid-state. Despite a large number of studies, the fundamental correlations between compositions, local symmetry, electronic structures of [{Ta6Bri12}La6]m+/n- cluster units (L = Br or H2O, in solution and in the solid-state), redox states, and vibrational and absorption properties are still not well established. Using K4[{Ta6Bri12}Bra6] as a starting precursor (i: inner and a: apical), we have investigated the behavior of the [{Ta6Bri12}Bra6]4- cluster unit in terms of oxidation properties and chemical modifications both in solution (water and organic solvent) and after recrystallization. A wide range of experimental techniques in combination with quantum chemical simulations afford new data that allow the puzzling behavior of the cluster units in response to changes in their environment to be revealed. Apical ligands undergo changes like modifications of interatomic distances to complete substitutions in solution that modify noticeably the cluster physical properties. Changes in the oxidation state of the cluster units also occur, which modify significantly their physical properties, including optical properties, which can thus be used as fingerprints. A subtle balance exists between the number of substituted apical ligands and the cluster oxidation state. This study provides new information about the exact nature of the species formed during the transition from the solid-state to solutions and vice versa. This shows new perspectives on optimization protocols for the design of Ta6 cluster-based materials.

Abstract
In science and technology today, the crucial importance of the regulation of nanoscale objects and structures is well recognized. The production of functional material systems using nanoscale units can be achieved via the fusion of nanotechnology with the other research disciplines. This task is a part of the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics, which is a concept moving beyond the area of nanotechnology. The concept of nanoarchitectonics is supposed to involve the architecting of functional materials using nanoscale units based on the principles of nanotechnology. In this focus article, the essences of nanotechnology and nanoarchitectonics are first explained, together with their historical backgrounds. Then, several examples of material production based on the concept of nanoarchitectonics are introduced via several approaches: (i) from atomic switches to neuromorphic networks; (ii) from atomic nanostructure control to environmental and energy applications; (iii) from interfacial processes to devices; and (iv) from biomolecular assemblies to life science. Finally, perspectives relating to the final goals of the nanoarchitectonics approach are discussed.

Abstract
Ionic liquids are regarded as one of the most prodigious materials for sustainable technological developments with superior performance and versatility. Hence, in this study, we have reported the design and synthesis of electroactive disubstituted ferrocenyl ionic liquids (Fc-ILs) with two different counter anions and demonstrated the significance of their anion tuneable physicochemical characteristics towards multifunctional electrochemical applications. The Fc-IL synthesized with chloride counter anion (Fc-Cl-IL) displays water-solubility and can be used as a redox additive in the fabrication of supercapacitor. Supercapacitor device with Fc-Cl-IL based redox electrolyte exhibits outstanding energy and power densities of 91 Wh kg-1 and 20.3 kW kg-1, respectively. Meanwhile, ferrocenyl IL synthesized with perchlorate anion (Fc-ClO4-IL) exhibits water-insolubility and can serve as a redox mediator towards construction of a glucose biosensor. The biosensor comprising Fc-ClO4-IL is able to detect glucose at an exceptionally lower potential of 0.2 V, with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity. This study implies that the introduction of electroactive ILs could afford supercapacitor devices with high energy and power densities and biosensors with less detection potential.

Abstract
Although various synthetic methodologies including organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, and materials science are the main contributors to the production of functional materials, the importance of regulation of nanoscale structures for better performance has become clear with recent science and technology developments. Therefore, a new research paradigm to produce functional material systems from nanoscale units has to be created as an advancement of nanoscale science. This task is assigned to an emerging concept, nanoarchitectonics, which aims to produce functional materials and functional structures from nanoscale unit components. This can be done through combining nanotechnology with the other research fields such as organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and bio-related science. In this review article, the basic-level of nanoarchitectonics is first presented with atom/molecular-level structure formations and conversions from molecular units to functional materials. Then, two typical application-oriented nanoarchitectonics efforts in energy-oriented applications and bio-related applications are discussed. Finally, future directions of the molecular and materials nanoarchitectonics concepts for advancement of functional nanomaterials are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Acenes and azaacenes lie at the core of molecular materials' applications due to their important optical and electronic features. A critical aspect is provided by their heteroatom multiplicity, which can strongly affect their properties. Here we report pyrazinacenes containing the dihydro-decaazapentacene and dihydro-octaazatetracene chromophores and compare their properties/functions as a model case at an oxidizing metal substrate. We find a distinguished, oxidation-state-dependent conformational adaptation and self-assembly behaviour and discuss the analogies and differences of planar benzo-substituted decaazapentacene and octaazatetracene forms. Our broad experimental and theoretical study reveals that decaazapentacene is stable against oxidation but unstable against reduction, which is in contrast to pentacene, its C-H only analogue. Decaazapentacenes studied here combine a planar molecular backbone with conformationally flexible substituents. They provide a rich model case to understand the properties of a redox-switchable π-electronic system in solution and at interfaces. Pyrazinacenes represent an unusual class of redox-active chromophores.

Abstract
Many researchers working on the development of Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) continue to focus on the synthesis of photoanode materials with high surface area, along with high light scattering ability to enhance light harvesting efficiency (LHE). On the other hand, dye packing density, which can also affect the LHE significantly, is often overlooked. Solvothermally synthesized anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (SANP) were obtained by a new and simple approach using a mixed solvent, ethanol and acetic acid. SANP were applied as a photoanodes material in DSCs using a metal-free organic dye (D149) or organometallic dye (N719) dyes. The dye loading (packing density) was examined in term of the isoelectric point (IEP) and the contribution of this, in addition to light scattering effects were shown to control the devices photovoltaic efficiency of the devices; specifically when compared with ones employing commercially available TiO2 nanoparticles (either transparent or a bilayer structure with a transparent layer and a scattering one). SANP photoanodes sensitized with D149 dye were found to be optimised at 10 µm, yielding photovoltaic conversion efficiencies of 6.9%, superior to for transparent or transparent + scattering films from the commercial source (5.6% and 5.9%, respectively). Further to this, an efficiency of 7.7% PCE was achieved using a SANP photoanode sensitized with N719 dye, with 7.2% seen for the transparent photoanode and 7.9% with a scattering layer. The high efficiencies of devices based on of SANP photoanode are attributed to the high dye loading capability in addition to good light scattering. A further point of interest is that even with the increased reactivity of the surface towards dye adsorption, we did not observe any significant increase in recombination with the redox mediator, presumably due to this increased dye loading providing better shielding.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a technology that can precisely fabricate customized tissues and organs. Hydrogel materials that can embed living cells for use in 3D printing are called bioinks. However, there are only limited options of bioinks currently because they require the following features at once, such as printability, repetitive layer-by-layer stacking (stackability), structure stabilization, and biological properties. A polyurethane-gelatin double network hydrogel bioink was previously reported to own tunable modulus through changing the solid content, but cell viability at the high solid content is inevitably reduced. In the present study, the reinforcement effects of a metal-organic framework (MOF), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), in the PUG bioink were evaluated. The printability, stackability, thermoresponsiveness, and shear-thinning behavior of the PUG-ZIF-8 composite hydrogels were examined. It was found that the PUG composite hydrogel containing 1250 μg/mL ZIF-8 crystals showed significant structural stability and modulus enhancement (∼2.5-fold). However, the PUG bioink containing 1250 μg/mL ZIF-8 crystals may lead to cell senescence or death. The cytocompatible concentration of ZIF-8 crystals in the bioink was about 875 μg/mL, and this concentration was much higher than the reported tolerable amount (∼50 μg/mL) of ZIF-8 for biomedical applications. The strong reinforcement effect of ZIF-8 and the drug-loading/sensing possibilities of MOFs may open new opportunities for using MOFs in 3D bioprinting applications.

Abstract
The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schaefer techniques facilitate thermodynamic favorability at an air-water interface, at which nanoscale molecular aggregations can be manipulated by micrometer- or millimeter-scale mechanics. The customary use of an aqueous subphase has limitations in the available temperature and spread materials. We present a general strategy to replace the aqueous subphase with an inert, low-vapor-pressure liquid, ethylene glycol. As a representative spread material that requires high-temperature processes, a semicrystalline polymeric semiconductor was investigated. We successfully demonstrated that the polymeric semiconductor spreads homogeneously across the entire surface of ethylene glycol heated to 100 °C using an LB trough, and spontaneously forms multilayers. Comprehensive studies such as X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy, and charge transport measurements revealed that barrier compression of solid-state polymer thin films during a high-temperature LB process produced uniaxial alignment of the polymer main chain with an averaged dichroic ratio of about 8, by which the electron transport concomitantly became highly anisotropic. The LB method presented in this work could be used to deposit thin films under ultimate environments, e.g., below 0 °C or above 100 °C, minimizing the effects of the vapor pressure of the subphase.

Abstract
Of the available environmentally friendly energy storage devices, supercapacitors are the most promising because of their high energy density, ultra-fast charging-discharging rate, outstanding cycle life, cost-effectiveness, and safety. In this work, nanoporous carbon materials were prepared by applying zinc chloride activation of lotus seed powder from 600 °C to 1000 °C and the electrochemical energy storage (supercapacitance) of the resulting materials in aqueous electrolyte (1M H2SO4) are reported. Lotus seed-derived activated carbon materials display hierarchically porous structures comprised of micropore and mesopore architectures, and exhibited excellent supercapacitance performances. The specific surface areas and pore volumes were found in the ranges 1103.0–1316.7 m2 g−1 and 0.741–0.887 cm3 g−1, respectively. The specific capacitance of the optimum sample was ca. 317.5 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1 and 272.9 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 accompanied by high capacitance retention of 70.49% at a high potential sweep rate of 500 mV s−1. The electrode also showed good rate capability of 52.1% upon increasing current density from 1 to 50 A g−1 with exceptional cyclic stability of 99.2% after 10,000 cycles demonstrating the excellent prospects for agricultural waste stuffs, such as lotus seed, in the production of the high performance porous carbon materials required for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract
Although molecular recognition at the air-water interface has been researched for over 30 years, investigations on its fundamental aspects are still active research targets in current science. In this perspective article, developments and future possibilities of molecular recognition at the air-water interface from pioneering research efforts to current examples are overviewed especially from the physico-chemical viewpoints. Significant enhancements of binding constants for molecular recognition are actually observed at the air-water interface although molecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding are usually suppressed in aqueous media. Recent advanced analytical strategies for direct characterization of interfacial molecules also confirmed the promoted formation of hydrogen bonding at the air-water interfaces. Traditional quantum chemical approaches indicate that modulation of electronic distributions through effects from low-dielectric phases would be the origin of enhanced molecular interactions at the air-water interface. Further theoretical considerations suggest that unusual potential changes for enhanced molecular interactions are available only within a limited range from the interface. These results would be related with molecular recognition in biomolecular systems that is similarly supported by promoted molecular interactions in interfacial environments such as cell membranes, surfaces of protein interiors, and macromolecular interfaces.

Abstract
Molecular behavior and functionality are affected by their prevailing immediate environment. Molecular machines function according to conformational variations and have been studied largely in solution states. In order to access more highly complex functional molecular machines, it is necessary to analyze and control them in various environments. We have designed and synthesized a bisbinaphthyldurene (BBD) molecule that has two binaphthyl groups connected through a central durene moiety, allowing for the formation of several conformers. In density functional theory (DFT) calculations, BBD has five major conformers, denoted anti-1/anti-2/syn-1/syn-2/flat. It has been demonstrated that BBD exhibits different conformations in solution (anti-1 and syn-1) than on a gold surface (syn dimer and flat). In this work, the ratio of BBD conformations has been controlled in mixed monolayers with several different lipids at an air-water interface in order to compare conformational activity under different conditions. The conformations of BBD in transferred films obtained by using Langmuir-Blodgett techniques were estimated from circular dichroism spectra and DFT calculations. It has been found that the conformation of BBD in the mixed monolayer depends on its aggregated state, which has been controlled here by the mechanical properties and miscibility. In mixed monolayers with "hard" lipids having less miscibility with BBD as well as in cast film, BBD is self-aggregated and mostly forms stable anti-1 and syn-1 conformations, while unstable anti-2 and syn-2 conformers dominated in the more dispersed states involving "soft" lipids, which show good miscibility with BBD. Conformational changes in BBD are due to the formation of different aggregated states in each mixed monolayer according to the miscibility. Overall, BBD molecular conformations (and the resulting spectra) could be tuned by controlling the environment whether in solution, on a solid substrate, or in an admixture with lipids at the air-water interface.

Abstract
Ionic self-assembly is a simple yet powerful method to obtain robust nanostructures. Herewith, we use mixtures of oppositely-charged porphyrins that can act as mesogens to form chromonic liquid crystals in water, i.e., molecular stacks with orientational (nematic) or positional (hexagonal) order. Electrostatic locking coupled with π-π interactions between aromatic groups within the stacks, together with inter-stack hydrogen bonding induce formation of all-organic crystalline nanofibers with high aspect ratio (a few tenths of nanometers in width but several tenths of micrometers in length) and that display branching. The nanofibers prepared from metal-free porphyrin units feature interesting optical properties, including an absorption spectrum that is different from the simple sum of the individual spectra of the components, which is attributed to a striking aggregation-induced chromism. When in contact with some polar organic solvents the materials become fluorescent, as a result of disaggregation. In a proof-of-concept, the obtained self-assembled one-dimensional (1D) materials were carbonized (yield ca. 60%) to produce nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers that can be used as active electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract
Nitrogen and phosphorus-containing ions such as ammonium, nitrates and phosphates are anthropogenic pollutants while ammonium nitrate may be diverted for nefarious purposes in improvised explosive devices. Crown ether-oxoporphyrinogen conjugates (OxP-crowns) are used to selectively detect nitrates, especially their ion pairs with K+ and NH4 + , based on ion pair complexation of OxP-crowns under phase transfer conditions. The presence of phosphate and carbonate lead to deprotonation of OxP-crowns. OxP-1N18C6 is capable of extracting ion pairs with nitrate from aqueous phase leading to a selective chromogenic response. Deprotonation of the OxP moiety leads to [OxP- ]-1N18C6[K+ ] and is promoted by crown ether selective cation binding coupled with hydration of basic oxoanions, which are constrained to remain in the aqueous phase. This work illustrates the utility of molecular design to exploit partitioning and ion hydration effects establishing the selectivity of the chromogenic response.

Abstract
Exploration of molecular functions and material properties based on the control of chirality would be a scientifically elegant approach. Here, the fabrication and function of chiral-featured materials from both chiral and achiral components using a supramolecular nanoarchitectonics concept are discussed. The contents are classified in to three topics: i) chiral nanoarchitectonics of rather general molecular assemblies; ii) chiral nanoarchitectonics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); iii) chiral nanoarchitectonics in liquid crystals. MOF structures are based on nanoscopically well-defined coordinations, while mesoscopic orientations of liquid-crystalline phases are often flexibly altered. Discussion on the effects and features in these representative materials systems with totally different natures reveals the universal importance of supramolecular chiral nanoarchitectonics. Amplification of chiral molecular information from molecules to materials-level structures and the creation of chirality from achiral components upon temporal statistic fluctuations are universal, regardless of the nature of the assemblies. These features are thus surely advantageous characteristics for a wide range of applications.

Abstract
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy cannot be used to discriminate enantiomers, and NMR resonances of enantiomeric mixtures are generally not affected by enantiomeric excess (ee). Here, we report that a coordination complex (L·2Zn·3C), where L is a salen-like prochiral ligand and C is an exchangeable acetate coligand, exhibits symmetrical splitting of one of the 1H NMR resonances of L with the degree of splitting linearly proportional to ee of the chiral guest coligand C, 2-phenoxypropionic acid. Despite the well-defined chirality in the crystal structure of L·2Zn·3C, concurrent fast chiral inversion and coligand exchange in solution renders L·2Zn·3C the primary example of prochiral solvating agent (pro-CSA) based on a coordination complex. Notably, the NMR resonances remain split even in dilute solution due to the lack of chiral guest dissociation in the coligand exchange system. This work provides new insights into chiral transfer events in metal-ligand complexes.

Abstract
The living cell can be regarded as an ideal functional material system in which many functional systems are working together with high efficiency and specificity mostly under mild ambient conditions. Fabrication of living cell-like functional materials is regarded as one of the final goals of the nanoarchitectonics approach. In this short review article, material-based approaches for regulation of living cell behaviors by external stimuli are discussed. Nanoarchitectonics strategies on cell regulation by various external inputs are first exemplified. Recent approaches on cell regulation with interfacial nanoarchitectonics are also discussed in two extreme cases using a very hard interface with nanoarchitected carbon arrays and a fluidic interface of the liquid-liquid interface. Importance of interfacial nanoarchitectonics in controlling living cells by mechanical and supramolecular stimuli from the interfaces is demonstrated.
