Abstract
Introduction Insufficient attention has been directed towards urosepsis. Notably, no protocols or clinical decision rules currently exist outlining the appropriate use of imaging in uroseptic patients. The primary objective of our study was to retrospectively evaluate uroseptic emergency department (ED) patients who underwent abdominal imaging, to report the proportion of patients with imaging findings necessitating emergent surgical consultation. Methods We retrospectively identified 1142 patients ≥ 18 years of age that presented to the ED from January 2009 to December 2012 with ICD9 code indicative of urosepsis. All included patients underwent ED-ordered abdominal computerized tomography (CT) or retroperitoneal ultrasound (US). Imaging and urinalysis (UA) results were categorized. We report proportions with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results Of 1142 patients, we excluded 80 for neg UA, 167 for < 2 SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome), 320 for positive blood cultures, and 37 for incomplete data. This yielded 538 patients which the authors reviewed the results of the CT or US to determine the proportion who required emergent surgical consultation and who underwent surgical or interventional procedure. There were 243 (45%) that had CT or US results that necessitated emergency surgical consultation, of those 180 (33%) underwent surgical or interventional procedure. Similar rates of emergency surgical consultation occurred when sub-divided by positive versus equivocal UA, with 43% and 47%, respectively. Conclusions Forty-five percent of our abdominally imaged urosepsis cohort had imaging findings that necessitated emergent surgical consultation, with a similar proportion in the subset with positive versus equivocal UA. The utility of abdominal imaging in this population should be studied prospectively.

Abstract
Background Most outpatients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) do not initially demonstrate severe features requiring hospitalization. Understanding this population’s epidemiological and clinical characteristics to allow outcome anticipation is crucial in healthcare resource allocation. Methods Retrospective, multicenter (8 hospitals) study reporting on 821 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 by real-time reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction assay of nasopharyngeal swabs and discharged home to self-isolate after evaluation in emergency departments (EDs) within Beaumont Health System in March, 2020. Outcomes were collected through April 14, 2020, with a minimum of 12 day follow-up and included subsequent ED visit, admission status, and mortality. Results Of the 821 patients, mean age was 49.3 years (SD 15.7), 46.8% were male and 55.1% were African-American. Cough was the most frequent symptom in 78.2% of patients with a median duration of 3 days (IQR 2–7), and other symptoms included fever 62.1%, rhinorrhea or nasal congestion 35.1% and dyspnea 31.2%. ACEI/ARBs usage was reported in 28.7% patients and 34.0% had diabetes mellitus. Return to the ED for re-evaluation was reported in 19.2% of patients from whom 54.4% were admitted. The patients eventually admitted to the hospital were older (mean age 54.4 vs 48.7 years, p=0.002), had higher BMI (35.4 kg/m2 vs 31.9 kg/m2, p=0.004), were more likely male (58.1% vs 45.4%, p=0.026), and more likely to have hypertension (52.3% vs 29.4%, p<0.001), diabetes mellitus (74.4% vs 29.3%, p<0.001) or prediabetes (25.6% vs 8.4%, p<0.001), COPD (39.5% vs 5.4%, p<0.001), and OSA (36% vs 19%, p<0.001). The overall mortality rate was 1.3%. Conclusion We found that 80.8% of patients did not return to the ED for re-evaluation. Sending patients with COVID-19 home if they experience mild symptoms is a safe approach for most patients and might mitigate some of the financial and staffing pressures on healthcare systems.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of energy-restricted feeding during rearing on the sexual maturation and reproductive performance of Rugao layer breeders. A total of 2,400 8-wk-old Rugao layer breeders were randomly assigned to one of 5 groups (480 pullets per group) with eight replicates and were fed one of 5 diets that were nutritionally similar with the exception of apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (AMEn) content (2,850, 2,750, 2,650, 2,550, and 2,450 kcal AMEn/kg) from 8 to 18 wks of age. The daily amount of feed was restricted to the absolute quantity of the diet consumed by laying hens fed 2,850 kcal AMEn per kg diet ad libitum (control). From 18 to 52 wks of age, all hens were fed basal diets ad libitum. The body weight of layer breeders at 18 wks of age decreased linearly with increasing energy restriction (P < 0.001), but caught up within 3 wks of ad libitum feeding (P = 0.290). The coefficient of variation of the body weight of the hens at 18, 21, and 24 wks of age decreased linearly (P = 0.010, 0.025, and 0.041, respectively) with increasing energy restriction during rearing. Energy-restricted feeding delayed sexual organ development at 18, 20, and 22 wks of age, including the number of large yellow follicles, oviduct length, oviduct length index, oviduct index, and ovary stroma index (P < 0.05), and delayed sexual maturity, including the age at laying the first egg and the age at 5% and 50% egg production (P = 0.042, 0.004, and 0.029, respectively). Consequently, egg number from 5% to 50% egg production decreased linearly as the degree of energy restriction increased (P = 0.001) and egg production of hens in the energy-restricted feeding groups was lower than that of hens in the ad libitum feeding group (6.36, 6.43, 6.4, and 4.61% vs. 14.29%; P < 0.05) from 18 to 20 wks of age. Furthermore, egg weight increased linearly as energy restriction increased (P < 0.001) and laying hens in the most severe energy-restricted feeding group had more setting eggs (normal eggs weighing >40 g) than hens in the ad libitum feeding and lighter energy-restricted feeding groups (149.57 vs. 144.34, 142.66, 143.63, and 141.78; P < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in fertility, hatchability of fertile eggs, and hatchability of setting eggs (P = 0.381, 0.790, and 0.605, respectively). In conclusion, moderate energy restriction (85.97%, 2,450 vs. 2,850 kcal AMEn/kg) from 8 to 18 wks of age increased egg weight as well as the production of setting eggs in native layer breeders throughout the laying period, without adverse effects on productive performance from 18 to 52 wks of age, or fertility and hatchability at 52 wks of age.

Abstract
Goose is an important type of domesticated poultry. The wild geese that are regarded as the ancestors of modern domestic geese present gray plumage. Domesticated, geese have both white and gray feathers. To elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying the formation of white and gray plumage in geese, we resequenced the whole genome of 18 geese from six populations including white and gray goose breeds. The average sequencing depth per individual was 9.81× and the average genome coverage was 96.8%. A total of 346 genes were detected in the top 1% of FST scores of gray- and white-feathered geese, and a significant FST site was located in the intron region within the KIT gene, the 18 bp deletion in KIT having the strongest potential association with white feathers. It has been reported that a number of genes are associated with plumage colors in birds. However, no studies have identified the relationship between KIT and plumage color in birds at present, although the white coat can be attributed to mutations in KIT in some mammals. Our study showed that that KIT is a plausible candidate gene for white/gray plumage color in Chinese domestic geese.

Abstract
Recognition of the adverse events of inferior vena cava filters (VCFs) has prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue safety warnings (2010 and 2014), advocating for removal, once the risk of pulmonary embolism has abated. Despite an initial increase in retrieval rates, these remain low (25–30% at 1 year in 2014). We retrospectively investigated retrieval trends in adults with VCFs placed between 2015 and 2018 at a single institution. The rate of retrievable VCF removal accounting for the competing risk of death was the main outcome. There were 494 VCFs placed (305 retrievable). The cumulative incidence of retrieval remained low (21% at 1 year), even after the second FDA warning (2014). Patients who resumed anticoagulation (AC) at any time were more likely to have retrieval (hazard ratio [HR] = 3.6,
p
< 0.01) and had higher retrieval rates at every time point (31.4 vs. 7.6% at 1 year). Advanced age (HR = 0.98 per year,

= 0.004), stroke (HR = 0.28,
p
= 0.028), and active malignancy (HR = 0.42,

= 0.006) predicted nonretrieval. Device-related complications were infrequent (<1%) but thrombotic complications occurred early and were more common for nonretrieved VCFs (17 vs. 12%,

= 0.29). Revision of guidelines to recommend active surveillance for the ability to tolerate AC in the immediate postimplantation period may improve retrieval rates.

Abstract
PURPOSE This paper aims to observe the expressions of VEGF and MMP-2 in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated by nimotuzumab combined with cisplatin. METHODS Altogether, 104 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated in our hospital from April 2014 to August 2016 were selected as research subjects. Among them, 50 patients treated with cisplatin were divided into a control group and 54 patients treated with nimotuzumab combined with cisplatin were divided into an observation group. The two groups of patients were compared in terms of efficacy after treatment and incidence of adverse reactions. Changes of serum VEGF and MMP-2 concentrations before and after treatment were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the 3-year overall survival (OS) of patients was observed. RESULTS Compared with the control group, patients in the observation group had significantly higher total remission rate (RR) (P < 0.05) and significantly lower incidence of adverse reactions (P < 0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference between the observation and control groups in the concentrations of VEGF and MMP-2 (P > 0.05). After treatment, the concentrations in the two groups were significantly lower than those before treatment (P < 0.05), and the concentrations in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the 3-year OS between the observation and control groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Nimotuzumab combined with cisplatin could improve the conditions of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. After treatment, the expression of VEGF and MMP-2 decreased significantly. We speculated that it improves the survival rate of patients by reducing the expression of VEGF and MMP-2.

Abstract
Epigenetics, such as the dynamic interplay between DNA methylation and demethylation, play diverse roles in critical cellular events. Enzymatic activity at CpG sites, where cytosines are methylated or demethylated, is known to be influenced by the density of CpGs, methylation states, and the flanking sequences of a CpG site. However, how the relevant enzymes are recruited to and recognize their target DNA is less clear. Moreover, although DNA-binding epigenetic enzymes are ideal targets for therapeutic intervention, these targets have been rarely exploited. Single-molecule techniques offer excellent capabilities to probe site-specific protein-DNA interactions and unravel the dynamics. Here, we develop a single-molecule approach that allows multiplexed profiling of protein-DNA complexes using magnetic tweezers. When a DNA hairpin with multiple binding sites is unzipping, strand separation pauses at the positions bound by a protein. We can thus measure site-specific binding probabilities and dissociation time directly. Taking the TET1 CXXC domain as an example, we show that TET1 CXXC binds multiple CpG motifs with various flanking nucleotides or different methylation patterns in an AT-rich DNA. We are able to establish for the first time, at nanometer resolution, that TET1 CXXC prefers G/C flanked CpG motif over C/G, A/T, or T/A flanked ones. CpG methylation strengthens TET1 CXXC recruitment but has little effect on dissociation time. Finally, we demonstrate that TET1 CXXC can distinguish five CpG clusters in a CpG island with crowded binding motifs. We anticipate that the feasibility of single-molecule multiplexed profiling assays will contribute to the understanding of protein-DNA interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The management of cardiac arrest patients receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an essential aspect of emergency medicine (EM) training. At our institution, we have a 1-month Resuscitation Rotation designed to augment resident training in managing critical patients. The objective of this study is to compare 30-day mortality between cardiac arrest patients with resuscitation resident (RR) involvement versus patients without. Our secondary outcome is to determine if RR involvement altered rates of initiating targeted temperature management (TTM). METHODS This study was conducted at a single site tertiary care Level-1 trauma center with an Emergency Department (ED) census of nearly 130,000 visits per year. Data was collected from 01/01/2015 to 01/01/2018 using electronic medical records via query. Patients admitted with cardiac arrest were separated into two groups, one with RR involvement and one without. Initial rhythm of ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia (VFIB/VTACH), 30-day mortality, history of coronary artery disease (CAD), and initiation of TTM were compared. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS Out of 885 patient encounters, 91 (10.28%) had RR participation. There was no statistical difference in 30-day mortality between patients with RR involvement compared to those without (71.42% vs 66.36%; P = 0.3613). However, TTM was initiated more in the RR group (20.70% vs 8.86%; P = 0.0025). Patients who received TTM also had a lower 30-day mortality compared to those without TTM (52.94% vs 70.87%; P = 0.0020). Patients who were older and had no history of CAD were also noted to have a statistically significant higher 30-day mortality. All other variables were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION Resuscitation resident involvement with the care of cardiac arrest patients had no impact in 30-day mortality. However, the involvement of RR was associated with a statistically significant increase in the initiation of TTM. One limitation is that RR participated in 10.28% of the cases analyzed herein, thus the two arms are unbalanced in size. Future work may investigate if the increase in TTM in the RR involved cases may portend improved rates of neurologically intact survival or more rapid achievement of goal temperatures.

Abstract
Mottled eggs in layer chickens are gaining increasing attention because of the economic impact on the egg industry caused by the reduced sale value of commodity eggs. However, the genetic architecture underlying mottled eggs is not well understood. The genetic architecture underlying the mottled egg trait was investigated using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) by high-density arrays, using a total of 407 pink eggs and 799 blue eggs from an F2 resource population generated by crossing Dongxiang Blue-shelled and White Leghorn chickens. The mottled egg score in blue eggs was found to be higher than that in pink eggs. The single-nucleotide polymorphism heritability of mottled egg at laying day and storage for 7 days was 0.18 and 0.20, respectively. Bivariate GWAS provided 29 significant loci, mainly located on GGA2, GGA3, GGA8, GGA10, GGA15, GGA17, and GGA23, affecting mottled egg on laying day. Candidate genes RIMS2, SLC25A32, RIMBP2, VPS13B, and RGS3 were obtained for mottled eggshell by bivariate GWAS and gene annotation. Our findings provide new insights into the genetic architecture of mottled egg in hens, and demonstrate that a genomic selection method would be profitable for breeding out the mottled egg trait.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE At our emergency department (ED), opioid prescribing guidelines were implemented in September 2016. The opioid prescribing guidelines were adopted and revised from collective efforts and advocacy of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians for ED-led opioid stewardship. We performed a retrospective before and after study to determine if opioid prescribing guidelines would change the use of intravenous opioids per patient and the morphine equivalent units (MEU) per patient in a suburban academic ED. METHODS A retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care level 1 trauma center with an annual ED volume of ≈ 130,000 visits. All intravenous orders of fentanyl, morphine, and hydromorphone for adult patients from January 1, 2015, through December 31, 2017, were tabulated. A 3-month (August 2016-October 2016) washout period was used. Poisson and ordinary linear regression analyses were employed to evaluate any difference in number of intravenous opioids ordered before and after adoption of the guidelines. Within our opioid prescribing guidelines was also guidance for oral opioid orders within the ED and oral opioid prescriptions for discharge, although these elements were not included in this investigation. RESULTS A total of 108,327 intravenous opioid orders were included in the final analysis. After adoption of the opioid prescribing guidelines, the expected number of intravenous opioids ordered dropped by 3.1% (eβ, 0.969; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.779-1.209), and there was an additional decrease of 0.1% per month (eβ, 0.999; 95% CI, 0.990-1.010). After the adoption of opioid prescribing guidelines, the average MEU dropped by 0.3 mg (95% CI, -0.47 to -0.13), and there was decrease of 0.01 mg per month (95% CI, -0.02 to -0.004). CONCLUSION After the adoption of opioid prescribing guidelines, our analysis suggests that opioid prescribing guidelines are associated with clinically small but statistically significant changes in MEU ordered in ED. We cannot determine if this represented a continued trend of decreased opioid use or associated with the opioid prescribing guidelines.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The survivorship of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) placed in hospitalized patients is shockingly poor and leads to frequent reinsertions. We aimed to evaluate differences in failure rates and IV insertion practices for PIVCs that are placed in the emergency department (ED) compared to those placed in the inpatient (IP) setting. METHODS We conducted a retrospective electronic medical record review of PIVC survival at a single-site suburban, academic tertiary care referral center with 130,000 annual ED visits and 1100 inpatient beds. Adult patients admitted requiring at least one PIVC were included. The primary outcome was incidence of premature failure of PIVCs. Secondary outcomes included dwell time, completion of therapy, catheter diameter, and site of insertion as they relate to PIVC survival. RESULTS Between January 2018 and July 2019, 90,743 IV catheters were included from 47,272 unique patient encounters in which 35,798 and 54,945 catheters were placed in the ED and IP units, respectively. There was no significant difference in failure rate between the ED and IP PIVCs, with 53.1% of ED PIVCs failing and 53.4% of IP PIVCs failing (p = 0.35). Mean dwell time for ED PIVCs was 3.4 days compared to a mean of 3.2 days for IP placed PIVCs (p < 0.001). 48% of ED PIVCs achieved completion of therapy at the first insertion compared to 59% of IP PIVCs (p < 0.001). The antecubital fossa and forearm had the lowest failure rate of 53% and 50%, respectively, and 22 gauge PIVCs had the highest failure rate of 60.5%. CONCLUSION PIVCs have similar poor survival rates regardless of ED versus IP location of the insertion. The forearm and antecubital fossa sites should be preferentially used. Smaller diameter (22G) catheters have highest complications and poorest survival regardless of site of insertion. Larger diameter catheters (18 or 20 gauge) may offer improved outcomes.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has aggressively spread across the United States with numerous fatalities. Risk factors for mortality are poorly described. This was a multicentered cohort study identifying patient characteristics and diagnostic markers present on initial evaluation associated with mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of survivors and non-survivors were obtained from electronic medical records and a multivariable survival regression analysis was conducted to identify risk factors of in-hospital death. Of 1629 consecutive hospitalized adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 from March 1st thru March 31, 2020, 1461 patients were included in final analysis. 327 patients died during hospitalization and 1134 survived to discharge. Median age was 62 years (IQR 50.0, 74.0) with 56% of hospitalized patients under the age of 65. 47% were female and 63% identified as African American. Most patients (55%) had either no or one comorbidity. In multivariable analysis, older age, admission respiratory status including elevated respiratory rate and oxygen saturation ≤ 88%, and initial laboratory derangements of creatinine > 1.33 mg/dL, alanine aminotransferase > 40 U/L, procalcitonin > 0.5 ng/mL, and lactic acid ≥ 2 mmol/L increased risk of in-hospital death. This study is one of the largest analyses in an epicenter for the COVID-19 pandemic. Older age, low oxygen saturation and elevated respiratory rate on admission, and initial lab derangements including renal and hepatic dysfunction and elevated procalcitonin and lactic acid are risk factors for in-hospital death. These factors can help clinicians prognosticate and should be considered in management strategies.

Abstract
Egg-type ducks and meat-type ducks are predominantly commercial or indigenous and have been subjected to artificial directional selection. These two duck types differ substantially in body shape, production performance and reproductivity. However, the genetic changes associated with phenotypic differences remain unclear. Here, we compared the two duck types at the genomic and transcriptomic levels. We identified a large number of SNPs and genes in genomic divergent regions in terms of FST and θπ values. The corresponding genes were mainly enriched in embryonic development function and metabolic pathway. RNA-seq analysis also revealed differential gene expression in the liver and gonads. The differentially expressed genes were functionally associated with signal transmission and substance metabolism respectively. Furthermore, we found that seven genes were related to differentiation between the two types by both g genome and transcriptome analysis and were plausible candidate genes. These genes were annotated to GO categories of cell development and disease immunity. These findings will enable a better understanding of the artificial selection history of meat and egg ducks and provide a valuable resource for future research on the breeding of these two lineages.

Abstract
It is known that rare-earth manganites LnMnO3 with Ln = La to Gd are typical Mott insulators favoring the A-type antiferromagnetic (A-AFM) state. Certainly no ferroelectricity can be possible although the alternatively stacked LnO layers are both polar. Nevertheless, under the inspiration that one plus one is more than two, it is appreciated that by combining two components of this manganite series into a superlattice functionality is added. In this work, we construct a (001)-oriented LaMnO3/RMnO3 (R = Pr, Pm, Sm and Gd) superlattice and investigate the possible emergent ferroelectricity by means of first-principles calculations. It is revealed that the lattice matching in these superlattices may generate lattice distortions to each component based on the scenario of hybrid improper ferroelectricity, resulting in spontaneous ferroelectric polarization, which is larger than the traditional type II Ln'MnO3 (Ln' radius is smaller than that of Gd) polarization. In the meantime, the A-AFM state remains the magnetic ground state of these superlattices. Furthermore, it is predicted that the externally imposed in-plane compressive strain can trigger the semiconductor to half-metal transitions accompanying the A-AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) transitions. The present work sheds light on the possibility to design multiferroic materials and functionality by tailoring artificial superlattices/heterostructures from those non-ferroelectric systems, and to design electronic devices by utilizing the electronic transport properties under epitaxial strain.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the dynamic changes of egg selenium (Se) deposition and deposition efficiency and to evaluate the efficacy of selenium-enriched yeast (SY) in laying hens over the 84 d feeding period after SY supplementation. A total of one thousand one hundred fifty-two 30-wk-old, Hy-Line Brown hens were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 groups (192 laying hens per group) with 6 replicates of 32 birds each, fed a basal diet (without Se supplementation), basal diet with 0.3 mg/kg of Se from sodium selenite (SS) or basal diets with 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4 mg/kg of Se from SY, respectively. The results showed that the Se concentrations in the eggs and breasts from hens fed a SY-supplemented diet were significantly higher than those from hens fed a SS-supplemented diet or a basal diet (P < 0.001). There was a positive linear and quadratic correlation between Se concentrations in the eggs from hens fed a SY-supplemented diet and dietary Se supplementation on days 28, 56, and 84 (r2 = 0.931, 0.932, 0.976, P < 0.001; r2 = 0.946, 0.935, 0.976, P < 0.001), respectively. The Se deposition efficiency in whole eggs from hens fed a basal or SY-supplemented diet weresignificantly higher than those in eggs from hens fed a SS-supplemented diet on days 28, 56, and 84 (P < 0.001), respectively. In addition, there was a positive linear and quadratic correlation between Se concentrations in the eggs from hens fed SY-supplemented diet (r2 = 0.655, 0.779, 0.874, 0.781, P < 0.001; r2 = 0.666, 0.863, 0.944, 0.781, P < 0.001) or SS-supplemented diet (r2 = 0.363, P = 0.002; r2 = 0.440, P = 0.002) and number of feeding days. In conclusion, the organic Se from SY has higher bioavailability and deposition efficiency of Se in whole eggs as compared with inorganic Se from SS. The Se concentrations and Se deposition efficiency in the eggs increased from hens fed a SS- or SY-supplemented diet but decreased from hens fed a basal diet with the extension of the experimental duration. The results indicate that the dietary Se supplementation from SY should be limited to a maximum of 0.1 mg Se/kg complete feed when the eggs and meat produced from hens fed a SY-supplemented diet are used as food for humans directly, whereas up to 0.4 mg/kg organic Se from SY can be used to supplement the diets for laying hens when the products are used as raw materials for producing Se-enriched food.

Abstract
Background The resuscitation of septic patients is a fundamental skill of emergency medicine (EM) training. We developed a required rotation designed to augment resident training in resuscitating critically ill patients in the emergency department (ED). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the successful completion of sepsis core measures alongside clinical outcomes between patients with a resuscitation resident (RR) involved in care versus patients without. Methods This retrospective study was conducted at a single site tertiary care Level 1 trauma center with an ED census of 130,000 visits annually. Data were collected from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2016, using the electronic medical record (EMR) via an Epic query (Epic Systems Corp., Verona, WI). Patients admitted with severe sepsis or septic shock (Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines) were included and separated into two groups, one with RR involvement and one without. Emergency department length of stay, time to initial lactic acid draw, lactic acid value, time to bolus fluid initiation, time to antibiotic initiation, need for medical intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and 30-day mortality were compared between the two groups. Chi-square tests and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the categorical variables. Two-sided t-tests and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used to examine continuous variables. Results Out of 4,746 patients admitted, 101 patients had an RR participate in their care. The median time to initial lactic acid draw was shorter (0.53 vs 1.05 hours; p < 0. 0001) and the lactic acid level was higher (2.5 vs 1.8 mmol/L; p < 0. 0001) with the presence of an RR. Resuscitation resident was correlated with a decrease in time to antibiotics and appropriate 30 cc/kg bolus, however, these were not statistically significant (p = 0.10 and p = 0.09 respectively). Resuscitation resident involvement was also associated with more medical ICU (45.5% vs 18.8%; p<0.0001) admissions and a higher 30-day mortality (14.9% vs 29.7%; p < 0. 0001). All other variables were not statistically significant. Conclusion Resuscitation residents demonstrate a statistically significant impact on lactic acid-related bundle compliance and help facilitate the care of higher acuity severe sepsis and septic shock patients.

Abstract
Single-molecule force spectroscopy is a powerful tool to directly measure protein-protein interactions (PPI). The high specificity and precision of PPI measurements made it possible to reveal detailed mechanisms of intermolecular interactions. However, protein aggregation due to specific or nonspecific interactions is among the most challenging problems in PPI examination. Here, we propose a strategy of a parallel DNA circuit to probe PPI using single-molecule magnetic tweezers. In contrast to PPI examination using atomic force microscopy, microspheres as probes used in magnetic tweezers avoided the single-probe issue of a cantilever. Negatively charged DNA as a linker circumvented the severe aggregation in the PPI construct with a protein linker. The unnatural amino acid encoded in proteins of interest expanded the choices of biorthogonal conjugation. We demonstrated how to apply our strategy to probe the PPI between the PHD3-Bromo and the histone H3 methylated at K4, a critical epigenetic event in leukemia development. We found a rupture force of 12 pN for breaking the PPI, which is much higher than that required to peel DNA off from a nucleosome, 3 pN. We expect that our methods will make PPI measurements of mechanics and kinetics with great precision, facilitating PPI-related research, e.g., PPI-targeted drug discovery.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1) is involved in the Hedgehog pathway and has been shown to regulate the RNA stability of several growth-related target genes. It is located in a quantitative trait locus showing a strong association with traits related to body size in ducks. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) also participates in Hedgehog signaling pathways and has been reported to be associated with organic growth and development. FGFR1-knockout mice have been shown to have severe postnatal growth defects, including an approximately 50% reduction in body weight and bone mass. Meanwhile, nonsense-mediated mRNA decay factor (SMG6) can maintain genomic stability, which is associated with organic growth and development. Therefore, we hypothesized that IGF2BP1, FGFR1 and SMG6 genes may play important roles in the growth traits of goats. In this study, the existence of two insertion/deletion (InDel) variants within IGF2BP1, one InDel within FGFR1 and two InDels within SMG6 was verified and their correlation with growth traits was analyzed in 2429 female Shaanbei white cashmere goats. Results showed both the 15 bp InDel in intron 2 and the 5 bp InDel in the 3' regulatory region within IGF2BP1 were significantly associated with growth traits (P < 0.05) and goats with the combinatorial homozygous insertion genotypes of these two loci had the highest body weight (P = 0.046). The other InDels within FGFR1 and SMG6 were not obviously associated with growth traits (P > 0.05). Therefore, the two InDels in IGF2BP1 were vital mutations affecting goat growth traits.

Abstract
Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of perovskite LaMO3/YMO3 superlattices (M = Cr, Mn, Co and Ni). It is found that ferroelectricity can emerge in LaMO3/YMO3 superlattices (M = Cr, Mn, Co), allowing them to be promising multiferroic candidates, while no ferroelectricity is found in the LaNiO3/YNiO3 superlattice. The electronic structure calculations indicate that the LaCrO3/YCrO3, LaMnO3/YMnO3, and LaCoO3/YCoO3 superlattices are insulators, and their magnetic ground states exhibit G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM), A-type AFM, and G-type AFM order, respectively, while the LaNiO3/YNiO3 superlattice is however a half-metallic ferromagnet. The electronic structure and magnetic ground state are discussed, based on the projected density of states data and Heisenberg model, respectively, and the magnetic phase transition temperature is evaluated based on mean-field theory. In the meantime, the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization of the LaMO3/YMO3 superlattices (M = Cr, Mn, Co) is determined respectively using the Born effective charge model and Berry phase method, and their hybrid improper ferroelectric character is predicted, with the net polarization mainly from the different displacements of the LaO layers and YO layers along the b-axis. It is suggested that alternative multiferroic materials can be obtained by properly designing superlattices that consist of two non-polar magnetic materials but exhibit tunable magnetic ground states and transition temperature and hybrid improper ferroelectricity.
