Abstract
The exclusive gammaE(T) signal has a small standard model cross section and is thus a channel sensitive to new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using 87 pb(-1) of data at square root [s]=1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale |F|(1/2) in supersymmetric models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, model-dependent limits on the fundamental mass scale M(D) of 0.55, 0.58, and 0.60 TeV, respectively, are found. We also specify a "pseudo-model-independent" method of comparing the results to theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) secondary to Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare condition. The commonest presentation is hemoptysis, which can be fatal. Though the classical triad of recurrent oral and genital ulcers and relapsing iritis is present in most patients of BD, isolated pulmonary artery involvement termed as incomplete BD has been reported. Prompt diagnosis and immunosuppressive therapy can cause regression of aneurysm and prevent fatal hemoptysis. We report a case of PAA due to BD who presented with hemoptysis and responded to steroid therapy.

Abstract
A growing amount of literature describes the development and applications of novel targeting and/or release triggering schemes to improve the therapeutic index of drugs encapsulated within liposomes. The composition of liposomal systems can be modified to facilitate site specific release in response to environmental conditions, namely at the gross anatomical level, at the cellular or sub-cellular level. They are designed in order to release their contents in response to acidic pH within the endosomal system while remaining stable in plasma thus improving the cytoplasmic delivery of various polar materials and macromolecules such as anti-tumor drugs, toxins, proteins and DNA. This review covers various aspect of research on pH-sensitive liposomes.

Abstract
The antihistamine activity of N-(pyridin-4-yl)-(indol-3-yl) alkylamides has been analyzed using Fujita-Ban and Hansch approaches. The analyses have helped to ascertain the role of different substituents in explaining the antiallergic actions of these analogues. From both approaches it is revealed that the small size substituents at R and R2 and non-hydrogen bond acceptor substituent at R improve histamine antagonist activity of a compound. Likewise, a small incision such as -CH2CONH-serving as the spacer between pyridinyl and indolyl rings and a bigger substituent like 4-FBn at R1 are also desirable for inhibitory activity.

Abstract
The reverse transcriptase inhibition of HIV-1, the most common form of HIV, by non-nucleoside 2-arylsulfonyl-6-substituted benzonitriles is analysed through Fujita-Ban and Hansch approaches. The analyses have helped to ascertain the role of different substituents in explaining the observed inhibitory actions of these compounds. From both approaches it appeared that SO2 instead of SO or S at X; and NH2 instead of F at Y (see Figure 1) are advantageous to improving the activity of a compound against HIV-1. This in turn leads to the suggestion that the 2-arylsulfonyl-6-aminobenzonitrile scaffold is the only appropriate structural entity that may further result into potential compounds. Further, the compounds having a OMe substituent at the orthoposition, the bulkier substituents at meta-positions and "no" substituent at para-position of 2-arylsulfonyl moiety are beneficial in raising the activity. The two quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analyses, differing in parametric approach, therefore, provided the grounds for rationalizing the substituent selection in designing more potent compounds of the series.

Abstract
We present the results of a search in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV for anomalous production of events containing a photon and a lepton (e or mu), both with large transverse energy, using 86 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994-1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The presence of large missing transverse energy (E(T)), additional photons, or additional leptons in these events is also analyzed. The results are consistent with standard model expectations, with the possible exception of photon-lepton events with large E(T), for which the observed total is 16 events and the expected mean total is 7.6+/-0.7 events.

Abstract
Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and these tumours are usually hyperfunctional as opposed to other malignant endocrine tumors. Surgery is the only effective treatment while nonsurgical modalities yield poor results. We report a patient, who presented with palpable mass in the neck and severe hypercalcemia. He underwent debulking surgery and received allendronate, calcitonin, dacarbazine followed by in- situ alcohol instillation with some success.

Abstract
Rheological behavior of surfactant-stabilized colloidal dispersions of silica particles under extreme conditions (low pH, high ionic strength) has been investigated in relation to interparticle forces and stability of the dispersion. The surfactant used as the dispersing agent was C(12)TAB, a cationic surfactant. Stability analysis through turbidity measurements indicated that there is a sharp increase in the stability of the dispersion when the surfactant concentration is in the range of 8 to 10 mM in the system. The state of the dispersion changes from an unstable regime to a stable regime above a critical concentration of C(12)TAB in the system. In the case of interaction forces measured between the silica substrate and AFM tip, no repulsive force was observed up to a surfactant concentration of 8 mM and a transition from no repulsive forces to steric repulsive forces occurred between 8 and 10 mM. Rheological measurements as a function of C(12)TAB concentration indicated a significant decrease in the viscosity and linear viscoelastic functions of the dispersion over the same range of surfactant concentration (8 to 10 mM C(12)TAB), showing a strong correlation between the viscosity behavior, interparticle forces, and structure development in the dispersion.

Abstract
The present study comprises of forty patients of scoliosis in growing age group (10-25 years) with Cobbs angles ranging from 52"-98". They were treated with Leeds procedure which is by anterior loosening followed by Posterior Harrington fixation + Luque derotation + Fusion and Costoplasty. Majority of the curves were thoracic (60%), and right sided (72%). Average correction of the deformity after surgery was 45%. Satisfaction level of patients and parents was good in 60% of the cases. The modality of treatment was decided on the basis of personality of each case, its demand and requirement, time of presentation and the potential for increasing severity. Anterior spinal surgery for scoliosis is an effective procedure in hands of experienced surgeons and it reduces stiffness of the curve, shorten the anterior column, decreases thoracic lordosis which leads to some improvement of pulmonary function. But there is greater risk of damage to vital structures with higher risks of cardiorespiratory failure. The potential risks have to be balanced with the expected rewards. The optimum method of correction has to be decided by careful preoperative evaluation. Combined procedure of anterior and posterior surgery causes lesser decrease in pulmonary functions than costoplasty alone, and achieving better cosmetic correction. This study reaffirms the role of anterior spinal surgery in India as the patients due to lower levels of health awareness present late and with severe deformities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human apolipoprotein H (beta(2)-glycoprotein I, apoH, protein; APOH, gene) is a single-chain glycoprotein that has been implicated in several metabolic pathways, including lipid metabolism, coagulation and production of antiphospholipid antibodies and many disease phenotypes. The structural, molecular and genetic bases of APOH have been studied in detail but population studies, especially from the Indian subcontinent, are limited. OBJECTIVE This study seeks to enlarge our understanding of APOH genetic diversity in human populations from different regions and social groups of India. Also, we examine the level and extent of genetic variation at this locus in world populations and its utility as a population genetic marker. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Blood samples from 1381 unrelated and randomly selected individuals were screened for APOH genetic polymorphism. Eleven populations from North India (Brahmins, Banias, Jat Sikhs, Khatris, Scheduled Castes, Lobanas and Rajputs), West India (Brahmin and Patels) and Central India (Brahmins and Baiga tribe) were studied for APOH polymorphism using isoelectric focusing. Allele frequencies were calculated by the gene counting method. The results were statistically evaluated using chi-square statistics for regional and ethnic variation. Genetic distances were computed on Indian populations to determine the population affinities. Correspondence analysis was used to assess ethnic variation in world populations. RESULTS An interesting and wide genetic variation at this locus was observed in Indian populations. The frequency distribution of three observed alleles ranged from 0.034 to 0.091 for APOH*1, 0.852 to 0.917 for APOH*2 and 0.027 to 0.075 for APOH*3. The world's highest APOH*2 allele frequency was observed in the Patel (0.917) caste group from West India. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the observed variation at this locus in Indian populations is comparable to many Caucasian populations. An analysis of world populations showed that APOH is a useful genetic marker for population and anthropological studies.

Abstract
We report on measurements of the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) differential cross sections (d(2)sigma/dp(T)dy)(/y/<0.4), as well as on the Upsilon(1S) polarization in p p macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV using a sample of 77+/-3 pb(-1) collected by the collider detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay Upsilon-->mu(+)mu(-). The measured angular distribution of the muons in the Upsilon(1S) rest frame is consistent with unpolarized meson production.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function F(D)(jj) of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV to F(D)(jj) obtained from a similar measurement at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and other theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the xi ( x-Pomeron) and beta ( x of parton in Pomeron) dependence of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. In the region 0.035<xi<0.095, /t/<1 GeV2, and beta<0.5, F(D)(jj)(beta,xi) is found to be of the form beta(-1.0+/-0.1)xi(-0.9+/-0.1), which obeys beta-xi factorization.

Abstract
The study was conducted to examine the role of free radicals in Indomethacin induced gastric mucosal injury and to evaluate the gastroprotective effects of melatonin and beta-carotene. Gastric mucosal injury was produced in rats by administering indomethacin 30 mg/kg subcutaneously. Melatonin was administered in three different doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, 30 minutes prior to the administration of indomethacin. Beta-carotene was administered as a single dose of 100 mg/kg. Following parameters were calculated: ulcer index, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense enzymes i.e. superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Indomethacin caused gastric mucosal injury in the form of haemorrhages, increased the lipid peroxidation and decreased the levels of the antioxidant defense enzymes. Melatonin (20 mg/kg) and beta-carotene decreased the ulcer index and lipid peroxidation, and reduced the decrease in antioxidant enzyme levels. These findings suggest the melatonin and beta-carotene show protective effect against indomethacin induced gastric injury and this effect is mediated by scavenging of oxygen derived free radicals.

Abstract
The effects of route of exposure, time of exposure and metabolism of 2-butoxyethanol (BE) on the contact hypersensitivity response (CHR) were evaluated in female BALB/c mice. Mice were either orally exposed to 50, 150 or 400 mg BE/kg or topically exposed to 0.25, 1.0, 4.0 or 16.0 mg BE on the ear and the oxazolone (OXA)-induced CHR evaluated by measuring ear thickness before and after OXA challenge. While no modulation was observed following oral exposure to BE, topical exposure resulted in a significant decrease in the CHR. Application of 4.0 mg BE in 4:1 acetone and olive oil (AOO) vehicle at the time of sensitization, challenge or both, decreased the CHR by 18%, 18% and 22%, respectively. A time course study of the effects of topical exposure to 4.0 mg BE/ear during the challenge phase of the CHR revealed that BE must be applied at the time of OXA challenge to significantly reduce the ear swelling response. In order to determine if metabolism of topically applied BE was required for suppression of the CHR, butoxyacetic acid (BAA), the primary metabolite of BE, was applied to the ear immediately following OXA challenge. No topical dose of BAA (2.0,4.0 and 8.0 mg BAA/ear) administered in this study altered the CHR. Blocking the metabolism of BE by oral administration of 4-methylpyrazole (MP), further reduced OXA-induced ear swelling when compared to mice exposed to BE without MP treatment. Taken together, these studies indicated that suppression of the CHR in mice following topical exposure to this glycol ether was due to the activity of BE itself and was not dependent on metabolic activation of the compound. Further studies were undertaken to identify a potential mechanism of BE-induced reduction of the CHR. Epidermal cells from untreated BALB/c mice were isolated and exposed to BE in vitro (10(-12), 10(-10), 10(-8), 10(-6) and l0(-4) M BE). In vitro exposure to BE at these concentrations did not significantly affect expression of MHC class II surface protein or protein synthesis in epidermal Langerhans cells, failing to provide in vitro evidence that BE-associated suppression of the CHR is associated with a reduction in MHC class II expression.

Abstract
We present the first general search for new heavy particles, X, which decay via X --> WZ0 --> e(nu)+jj as a function of M(X) and Gamma(X) in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. No evidence is found for production of X in 110 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. General cross section limits are set at the 95% C.L. as a function of mass and width of the new particle. The results are further interpreted as mass limits on the production of new heavy charged vector bosons which decay via W' --> WZ0 in an extended gauge model as a function of the width, Gamma(W'), and mixing factor between the W' and the standard model W bosons.
