The (Un)reliability of Alibi Corroborators: Failure to Recognize Faces of Briefly Encountered Strangers Puts Innocent Suspects at Risk

Some innocent suspects rely on the memory of strangers to corroborate their alibis. However, no research has examined whether such potential alibi corroborators can accurately recognize an innocent suspect with whom they previously interacted. We developed a novel alibi corroboration paradigm in which undergraduate students (representing innocent suspects who would later provide an alibi) interacted with naïve university employees (representing potential alibi corroborators). Each student briefly interacted with a different naïve university employee (n = 60), and were also each yoked to a different employee with whom they did not interact (n = 60). Employees were presented 24 hours later with either a single photograph of the student or a six-person array containing a photograph of the student and were asked if they recognized anyone. The majority of employees failed to make a correct recognition of the student. False recognitions, however, were rare. Students exhibited overconfidence that they would be recognized. Findings imply that innocent suspects who rely on strangers to corroborate their alibis may be at risk. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

End-tidal desflurane concentration for tracheal extubation in adults

OBJECTIVE

To determine the end-tidal desflurane concentration required for tracheal extubation in anaesthetised adults.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

After hospital Ethics Committee approval, eighteen ASA I-II adult patients (19-65 years of age), who had been scheduled for elective ambulatory surgery were included in the study. Anaesthesia was induced with propofol 2.5mg.kg^-1, fentanyl 2μg.kg^-1, and rocuronium 0.6mg.kg^-1 for intubation. Maintenance of anaesthesia was provided by desflurane in oxygen and air (40:60), and remifentanil at 0.05-0.25μg.kg^-1.min¹. Neuromuscular function was monitored with train-of-four (TOF) nerve stimulation and acceleromyography. At the end of the surgery neuromuscular blockade was reversed with sugammadex 2-4mg.kg^-1 in accordance with the TOF ratio. The concentration of desflurane at which extubation was attempted was determined by using Dixon's up-and-down method with 0.5% as a step size. Smooth extubation was defined as one without coughing, teeth clenching, gross purposeful movements, and no breath-holding or laryngospasm within 1min of tracheal extubation.

RESULTS

It was found that the end-tidal concentration of desflurane was 3.17±0.18% (95% CI: 3%-3.35%) for successful extubation in 50% of adults.

CONCLUSION

Extubation in patients receiving desflurane may be feasible at 0.62 minimum alveolar concentration.

Accrual to Cancer Clinical Trial

Accrual to cancer clinical trials (CCT) is imperative to safeguard continued improvement in cancer outcomes. A retrospective chart review was performed of patients (n=140) starting a new anti-cancer agent in a north Dublin cancer centre. This review was performed over a four-month period, beginning in November 2015. Only 29% (n=41) had a CCT option. The overall accrual rate to CCT was 5% (n=7), which is comparable to internationally reported figures. The main reasons for failure to recruit to CCT included the lack of a CCT option for cancer type (n=30, 23%), stage (n=25, 19%), and line of treatment (n=23, 17%). Over the last decade, the rate of accrual to CCTs has in fact doubled and the number of trials open to recruitment has tripled. Ongoing governmental and philanthropic support is necessary to continue this trend to further expand CCT patient options with a target accrual rate of 10%.

Communication: Analytical optimal pulse shapes obtained with the aid of genetic algorithms: Controlling the photoisomerization yield of retinal

We recently proposed a Quantum Optimal Control (QOC) method constrained to build pulses from analytical pulse shapes [R. D. Guerrero et al., J. Chem. Phys. 143(12), 124108 (2015)]. This approach was applied to control the dissociation channel yields of the diatomic molecule KH, considering three potential energy curves and one degree of freedom. In this work, we utilized this methodology to study the strong field control of the cis-trans photoisomerization of 11-cis retinal. This more complex system was modeled with a Hamiltonian comprising two potential energy surfaces and two degrees of freedom. The resulting optimal pulse, made of 6 linearly chirped pulses, was capable of controlling the population of the trans isomer on the ground electronic surface for nearly 200 fs. The simplicity of the pulse generated with our QOC approach offers two clear advantages: a direct analysis of the sequence of events occurring during the driven dynamics, and its reproducibility in the laboratory with current laser technologies.

E2f3 in tumor macrophages promotes lung metastasis

The Rb-E2F axis is an important pathway involved in cell-cycle control that is deregulated in a number of cancers. E2f transcription factors have distinct roles in the control of cell proliferation, cell survival and differentiation in a variety of tissues. We have previously shown that E2fs are important downstream targets of a CSF-1 signaling cascade involved in myeloid development. In cancer, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are recruited to the tumor stroma in response to cytokines secreted by tumor cells, and are believed to facilitate tumor cell invasion and metastasis. Using the MMTV-Polyoma Middle T antigen (PyMT) mouse model of human ductal carcinoma, we show that the specific ablation of E2f3 in TAMs, but not in tumor epithelial cells, attenuates lung metastasis without affecting primary tumor growth. Histological analysis and gene expression profiling suggest that E2f3 does not impact the proliferation or survival of TAMs, but rather controls a novel gene expression signature associated with cytoskeleton rearrangements, cell migration and adhesion. This E2f3 TAM gene expression signature was sufficient to predict cancer recurrence and overall survival of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer patients. Interestingly, we find that E2f3b but not E2f3a levels are elevated in TAMs from PyMT mammary glands relative to controls, suggesting a differential role for these isoforms in metastasis. In summary, these findings identify E2f3 as a key transcription factor in TAMs, which influences the tumor microenvironment and tumor cell metastasis.

Unexploited potential of some biotechnological techniques for biofertilizer production and formulation

The massive application of chemical fertilizers to support crop production has resulted in soil, water, and air pollution at a global scale. In the same time, this situation escalated consumers' concerns regarding quality and safety of food production which, due to increase of fertilizer prices, have provoked corresponding price increase of food products. It is widely accepted that the only solution is to boost exploitation of plant-beneficial microorganisms which in conditions of undisturbed soils play a key role in increasing the availability of minerals that otherwise are inaccessible to plants. This review paper is focused on the employment of microbial inoculants and their production and formulation. Special attention is given to biotechniques that are not fully exploited as tools for biofertilizer manufacturing such as microbial co-cultivation and co-immobilization. Another emerging area includes biotechnological production and combined usage of microorganisms/active natural compounds (biostimulants) such as plant extracts and exudates, compost extracts, and products like strigolactones, which improve not only plant growth and development but also plant-microbial interactions. The most important potential and novel strategies in this field are presented as well as the tendencies that will be developed in the near future.

Intellectual disability and co-occurring mental health and physical disorders in aggressive behaviour

BACKGROUND

Mental and physical health problems are more prevalent among individuals with an intellectual disability (ID) than in the general population. Studies suggest that there may be significant associations between these co-occurring disorders and aggressive behaviour, but few studies have taken into account multiple mental and physical problems, as well as their level of severity.

OBJECTIVES

The main goal of this study was to identify the associations between different types of aggressive behaviour and various types of physical and mental health problems.

METHODS

These associations were explored through a cross-sectional study of 296 adult men and women with mild or moderate ID living in the community and receiving ID services. Information was gathered through interviews with ID participants, case managers and file review.

RESULTS

The results show that individuals with ID who have more mental and physical health problems have higher odds of displaying aggressive behaviour than those with fewer and less severe physical health problems.

DISCUSSION

These results can help guide future prevention and intervention strategies for persons with ID who display aggressive behaviour or who are at risk of become aggressive.
