Abstract
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disease in Caucasians. Although most cases are diagnosed in childhood, diagnosis in adults is apparently increasing. OBJECTIVE Evaluate the adult population with CF, comparing patients who were diagnosed before and after 18 years of age. METHODS Retrospective analysis of patients followed in three main medical centres in Portugal in 2012. Comparison of two groups: G1 - patients diagnosed at <18 years and G2 - patients diagnosed at ≥18 years. RESULTS 89 adults were identified: 61.8% in G1, 38.2% in G2. Gender distribution was similar in both groups. Average age in G2 was higher (38.3±8.4 vs. 26.8±6.1 years, p<0.001). Respiratory symptoms most frequently led to CF diagnosis in all patients, mainly in adulthood. There was a greater percentage of patients homozygous for the mutation delF508 in G1 (43.6 vs. 8.8%, p=0.02). Respiratory and pancreatic function, and body mass index (BMI) showed a higher severity in G1 (G1 vs. G2: FEV1: 54.6±27.3 vs. 29.9±64.6%, p=0.177; pancreatic insufficiency 72.7 vs. 26.5%, p<0.001; BMI 20.2±3.4 vs. 22.2±4.8, p=0.018). Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus were the most frequently isolated microorganisms. Lung transplantation rate was higher in G2 (20.6 vs. 10.9%, p=0.231) while mortality rate was higher in G1 (0 vs. 3.6%, p=0.261). Hospital admission rate was higher in G1 as well as mortality rate. CONCLUSION The results suggest that patients with CF diagnosed in childhood have characteristics that distinguish them from those diagnosed in adulthood, and these differences may have implications for diagnosis, prognosis and life expectancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increased asthma prevalence in westernized societies has been suggested to be related to environment exposures and lifestyle changes, particularly diet. We aimed to explore the association between dietary patterns and asthma prevalence, incidence and control in a nationally representative population. METHODS Data from 32,644 adults, 53% female, from the 4th Portuguese National Health Survey were analysed. Prevalence of asthma was 5.3%; 'current asthma', defined by asthma symptoms within previous year, 3.5%; 'current medicated asthma' defined by use of asthma medication within previous year, 3.0%; 'current severe asthma' defined by emergency visit because of asthma within previous year, 1.4%; and 'incident asthma', 0.2%. Dietary patterns (DP) were identified by latent trait models based on dietary intake. Unconditional logistic regression models were performed to analyse association between DP and asthma. Age, gender, education, family income, proxy reporting information, smoking, body mass index and physical activity level were analysed as confounders. RESULTS Two of the five identified DP were associated with asthma: 'high fat, sugar and salt' DP (positively correlated with pastry, chocolate and sweet desserts, candies, salty snacks, chips, fruit juices, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages consumption at snacks) was associated with asthma prevalence (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.24) and current severe asthma (OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.48), while 'fish, fruit and vegetables' DP (positively correlated with fish, vegetables and fruit intake at meals) was negatively associated with current (OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.73, 0.98), and current medicated asthma (OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.72, 0.98), after adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSION & CLINICAL RELEVANCE Our results suggest a protective association between 'fish, vegetables and fruit' DP and current asthma and current medicated asthma, and a detrimental association between 'high fat, sugar and salt' DP and severe asthma prevalence, further supporting the rational for diet and lifestyle intervention studies in asthma based on whole dietary patterns and physical activity.

Abstract
Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMC) is a variant of infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast associated with poor outcome. In this study, we report 16 carcinomas of the feline mammary gland displaying histologic features that correspond to IMC of the breast in women. The clinicopathologic findings, overall survival time, disease-free survival time, and nuclear DNA content of these cats were compared with 65 more common invasive mammary carcinomas (other feline mammary carcinoma [FMC]) of nonspecified type. IMC was associated with larger tumor size, higher histologic grade ( P < .0001), deeper muscle invasion ( P = .004), and more frequent lymphovascular invasion and nodal metastases ( P = .009 and P = .001, respectively) than other FMCs. The aneuploid pattern was more frequent in IMC lesions. IMCs were also associated with lower survival rates. In summary, all cases of feline IMC were associated with clinicopathologic features of high biologic aggressiveness and should be classified as independent histologic types of FMC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) in Portugal is estimated at 1:8000 live births, although there is a lack of accurate statistics. The average life expectancy has been steadily increasing and CF is no longer an exclusively pediatric disease. OBJECTIVES Characterize the Portuguese adult population with the diagnosis of CF. METHODS Retrospective study based on clinical data of adult CF follow-up patients in the three specialized centers in Portugal where all of CF patients are seen, during 2012. RESULTS In 2012, there were 89 follow-up patients, 48 (54%) female and 15 (17%) lung transplanted. The average age was 31.3±9 years. The median age at diagnosis was 13 years and 34 (38%) were diagnosed in adulthood. The most frequent mutation was F508del (54.9%). Of the 89 patients, 49 patients (56%) had pancreatic insufficiency, 7 (9%) were diabetic and 42 patients (47.7%) had a body mass index (BMI) <20kg/m(2). As to ventilatory function, the average value of the forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1) was 58.45±28.59%. Only one of 77 patients did not have chronic airway infection. The most commonly isolated germ was methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus in 49 patients (55%). During 2012, two patients (2.2%) died at the ages of 21 and 36 years. DISCUSSION This study is the first description of the Portuguese adult CF population, which is particularly important since it can give us a better understanding of the real situation. A significant percentage of these patients were diagnosed in adulthood, which highlights the need for diagnostic suspicion in a patient with chronic lung disease and atypical manifestations.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY To investigate two protocols to provide antinociception in horses. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the antinociceptive effects of intravenous methadone combined with detomidine or acepromazine in adult horses. STUDY DESIGN Randomised, blinded, crossover study. METHODS Mechanical, thermal and electrical stimuli were applied to the dorsal left and right metacarpus and coronary band of the left thoracic limb, respectively. A thermal stimulus was applied caudal to the withers. The horses were treated with saline (C), a combination of methadone (0.2 mg/kg bwt) and detomidine (10 μg/kg bwt) (MD) or methadone (0.2 mg/kg bwt) and acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg bwt) (MA) at 1 week intervals. Nociceptive thresholds were measured before and at 15 min intervals until 150 min after treatment. Wilcoxon rank-sum and Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used to compare data between groups at each time point and over time within each group, followed by the Bonferroni method to adjust the P value. RESULTS The mechanical stimulus was the most sensitive test to differentiate the antinociceptive effects of the treatments. Mechanical thresholds were greater after MD than MA between 15 and 30 min and with both MD and MA these thresholds were greater than C from 15 to 60 min. Electrical and thermal limb thresholds were greater after MD than C at 15 and 45 min and at 15, 30, 45, 75 and 105 min, respectively. Thermal limb thresholds were greater with MA than C at 30 min. Thoracic thermal threshold in MD and MA were higher than C at 45, 75, 90 and 120 min and from 30 to 75 min, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Methadone and acepromazine produced less pronounced mechanical antinociception than MD.

Abstract
DC reactive magnetron sputtered Ag:TiO2 nanocomposite thin films were developed to be used as protective coatings in pressure sensor devices. The coatings, with Ag content varying from 0 to about 30 at.%, were prepared and characterized in order to study their biological response. The as-deposited samples were annealed in vacuum at 500 °C in order to evaluate the influence of their morphological and structural differences over the response elicited upon contact with simulated bodily fluids and cultured human cells, as well as selected microorganisms. The results showed that the annealing treatment produced less porous films with an enhanced structure, with a significant reduction in structural defects and improved crystallinity. Additionally, samples with higher Ag contents (≥12.8 at.%) exhibited Ag agglomerates/clusters at the surface, a result anticipated from the XRD data. The crystallization of the TiO2 matrix was also observed by XRD analysis, albeit delayed by the dispersion of Ag into the matrix. Biological characterization showed that the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of the coatings were directly related with their composition, closely followed by the particular structural and morphological features, namely those resulting from annealing process.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) is the main receptor activated by vascular endothelial growth factor -A (VEGF-A) to promote tumour angiogenesis. Its clinical prognostic value has not been studied in canine mammary tumours (CMTs). Dogs with mammary cancer were enrolled in a survival study and the immunohistochemical expressions of VEGFR-2 and VEGF-A were analysed and associated with clinicopathological features. VEGFR-2 expression was associated with VEGF immunoreactivity in cancer cells, supporting the presence of an autocrine loop that may be involved in CMTs growth and survival. VEGFR-2 was also expressed by endothelial cells from tumour vasculature and positively associated with stromal matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), suggesting the existence of a link between endothelial cells activation and up-regulation of matrix degrading proteins. Carcinosarcomas exhibited high VEGFR-2 expression suggesting that it may be one of the activated molecular pathways in this aggressive histological type and that VEGFR-2 inhibitors may constitute a potential treatment to improve the prognosis of these patients. Both VEGF and VEGFR-2 immunoreactivities were independent of patients' overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS).
