Electrochemical polymerization of allylamine copolymers

We describe for the first time the electro-oxidative synthesis and passivating properties of surface films of poly(allylamine) and copolymers of allylamine and diallylamine. Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectra show that the films exhibit high charge-transfer resistance and that the addition of diallylamine causes improvements in the compactness and stability toward swelling of the films when compared to both allylamine and diallyamine, leading to coatings with high charge-transfer resistance up to 70 MΩ. We also show that removing oxygen before the polymerization further improves the films' passivating properties.

Arsenic release from deep natural solid matrices under experimentally controlled redox conditions

We investigated the role of iron (Fe) on arsenic (As) release from two samples of a natural deep soil collected in an aquifer body in the Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy. Each sample is representative of a different solid matrix, i.e., sand and vegetal matter. Batch experiments were performed by applying alternating aerobic/anaerobic conditions to the samples under a range of redox and pH conditions, consistent with the corresponding values measured in the field. Arsenic mobilization was triggered by abrupt and rapid changes in redox conditions and displayed a clear correlation with oxidation/reduction potential for both solid matrices. Vegetal matter showed high binding capacity and large As concentration release. Arsenic release was also correlated with Fe released from the solid matrices. Our results suggest that the environmentally critical As concentrations detected in some aquifers in the Emilia-Romagna Region are consistent with (a) the occurrence of high natural As content in the component of the host porous medium associated with vegetal matter and (b) the effect of possible sharp localized (and temporally oscillating) variations in redox conditions.

Knitting the catalytic pattern of artificial photosynthesis to a hybrid graphene nanotexture

The artificial leaf project calls for new materials enabling multielectron catalysis with minimal overpotential, high turnover frequency, and long-term stability. Is graphene a better material than carbon nanotubes to enhance water oxidation catalysis for energy applications? Here we show that functionalized graphene with a tailored distribution of polycationic, quaternized, ammonium pendants provides an sp(2) carbon nanoplatform to anchor a totally inorganic tetraruthenate catalyst, mimicking the oxygen evolving center of natural PSII. The resulting hybrid material displays oxygen evolution at overpotential as low as 300 mV at neutral pH with negligible loss of performance after 4 h testing. This multilayer electroactive asset enhances the turnover frequency by 1 order of magnitude with respect to the isolated catalyst, and provides a definite up-grade of the carbon nanotube material, with a similar surface functionalization. Our innovation is based on a noninvasive, synthetic protocol for graphene functionalization that goes beyond the ill-defined oxidation-reduction methods, allowing a definite control of the surface properties.

Different corrosive effects on hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and amine fluoride-based mouthwashes on dental titanium brackets: a comparative in vitro study

Titanium plates treated in vitro with a mouthwash containing amine fluoride (100 ppm F-) and another containing zinc-substituted carbonate-hydroxyapatite have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to evaluate the modification of the surface roughness induced by treatment with these two different mouthwashes. The treatment with F--based mouthwash produces a roughness characterized by higher peaks and deeper valleys in the streaks on the titanium bracket surface compared with those observed in the reference polished titanium plates. This effect causes a mechanical weakness in the metallic dental implant causing bacterial growth and therefore promotes infection and prosthesis contamination. However, the in vitro treatment with a mouthwash containing zinc-substituted carbonate-hydroxyapatite reduced the surface roughness by filling the streaks with an apatitic phase. This treatment counteracts the surface oxidative process that can affect the mechanical behavior of the titanium dental implant, which inhibits the bacterial growth contaminating prostheses.

Highly sensitive electrochemiluminescent nanobiosensor for the detection of palytoxin

Marine toxins appear to be increasing in many areas of the world. An emerging problem in the Mediterranean Sea is represented by palytoxin (PlTX), one of the most potent marine toxins, frequently detected in seafood. Due to the high potential for human toxicity of PlTX, there is a strong and urgent need for sensitive methods toward its detection and quantification. We have developed an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence-based sensor for the detection of PlTX, taking advantage of the specificity provided by anti-PlTX antibodies, the good conductive properties of carbon nanotubes, and the excellent sensitivity achieved by a luminescence-based transducer. The sensor was able to produce a concentration-dependent light signal, allowing PlTX quantification in mussels, with a limit of quantification (LOQ = 2.2 μg/kg of mussel meat) more than 2 orders of magnitude more sensitive than that of the commonly used detection techniques, such as LC-MS/MS.

Toward Quantum-dot Cellular Automata units: thiolated-carbazole linked bisferrocenes

Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) exploit quantum confinement, tunneling and electrostatic interaction for transistorless digital computing. Implementation at the molecular scale requires carefully tailored units which must obey several structural and functional constraints, ranging from the capability to confine charge efficiently on different 'quantum-dot centers'-in order to sharply encode the Boolean states-up to the possibility of having their state blanked out upon application of an external signal. In addition, the molecular units must preserve their geometry in the solid state, to interact electrostatically in a controlled way. Here, we present a novel class of organometallic molecules, 6-3,6-bis(1-ethylferrocen)-9H-carbazol-9-yl-6-hexan-1-thiols, which are engineered to satisfy all such crucial requirements at once, as confirmed by electrochemistry and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, and first principles density functional calculations.

Raman doping profiles of polyelectrolyte SWNTs in solution

We present a resonance Raman study of electrochemical charge transfer doping on polyelectrolyte single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in solution. Changes in the intensity of the radial breathing modes of well-identified SWNTs are measured as a function of the electrochemical potential. The intensity is maximum when the nanotubes are neutral. Unexpectedly, the Raman signal decreases as soon as charges are transferred to the nanotubes, leading to intensity profiles that are triangular for metallic and trapezoidal for semiconducting nanotubes. A key result is that the width in energy of the plateaus for the semiconducting nanotubes is roughly equal to the optical gap (rather than the free carrier gap). While these experiments can be used to estimate the energy levels of individual nanotubes, strong dynamical screening appears to dominate in individual SWNT polyelectrolytes so that only screened energy levels are being probed.

Electrochemical study of hydrogen peroxide formation in isolated mitochondria

Mitochondrial respiration generates reactive oxygen species that are involved in physiological and pathological processes. The majority of methods, with exception of electron paramagnetic resonance, used to evaluate the identity, the rate and the conditions of the reactive oxygen species produced by mitochondria, are mainly based on oxidation sensitive markers. Following latest electrochemical methodology, we implemented a novel electrochemical assay for the investigation of aerobic metabolism in preparations of isolated mitochondria through simultaneous measurement of O₂ consumption and reactive species production. This electrochemical assay reveals active H₂O₂ production by respiring mouse liver mitochondria, and shows that ATP synthase activation and moderate depolarization increase the rate of H₂O₂ formation, suggesting that ATP synthesizing (state 3) mitochondria might contribute to oxidative stress or signaling.
