[Bullous mastocytosis. Two clinical cases]

Two cases of bullous mastocytosis in children are described. This form must be differentiated from the more common mastocytosis with bullae: in the latter form, blisters occur on previously existing papillar or nodular lesions, whereas in bullous mastocytosis the blisters occur on apparently normal skin.

A multicentre study of contact sensitization in children. Gruppo Italiano Ricerca Dermatiti da Contatto e Ambientali (GIRDCA)

The results of 7 months of patch testing with a standard series of 26 allergens in 323 children with eczematous conditions or itching palmoplantar psoriasis under the age of 14 years are reported. 114 (35.3%) of the children had 1 or more positive reactions to this standard series. 28 children (8.7%) were polysensitive. On the basis of personal history, additional series of allergens and/or specific allergens were also tested. 61.7% (90/146) of positive reactions were considered relevant to the current dermatitis. Metals, medicaments, preservatives or fragrances, and shoe components were the major sources of contact sensitization. It is suggested that patch testing be done more frequently in evaluating dermatitis in children.

The use of laboratory methods in contact dermatitis induced by composite materials

Thin-layer chromatography, column chromatography, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance were used to investigate the chemical constituents and haptens responsible in 2 different circumstances where allergic contact dermatitis from composite materials was suspected. In an aircraft factory where epoxy resins were used, tetraglycidyl-4,4'-dimethyl dianiline and phenylglycidyl ether were identified as the haptens responsible for an outbreak of contact dermatitis. The role of abietic acid as the main sensitizer in colophony was confirmed in a case of contact dermatitis occurring in a sportsman with an acute eczematous reaction due to a leg bandage. Identification of the chemical sensitizers was possible only by using the aforementioned laboratory methods.

[The relationship between lichen ruber planus orale, hepatopathies and hypersensitivity to the components of dental restorations]

A group of patients with lichen planus, a pathology affecting the cutis and mucosa which may affect the oral cavity, were studied. All patients underwent laboratory tests to assess hepatic function. Prick tests, using a series of haptens found in materials used in dental reconstruction work, were also performed in 53 patients who possessed dental prostheses. The statistically significant correlation between lichen planus, especially in its erosive form, and hepatic damage is underlined. However, the correlation between sensitivity to the haptens contained in materials for dental reconstruction work and lichen planus was not significant.
