Abstract
Immunoglobulin (Ig) is the one of the main anti-infective components of blood, colostrum and breast milk. It is the unique glycoprotein that defends the body from harmful bacteria, viruses and other environmental pathogens by either binding to them or by forming an encapsulating barrier. The expansion of antimicrobial and immunomodulatory products from natural sources for dietary supplementation in both animals and humans is an ever growing and thriving area of research. Purified Ig from sheep serum (ovine serum Ig) is one such candidate product. Recent work has shown the various biological effects of oral Ig in different animal models including its effect on growth, immunity, intestinal growth and gut barrier function. The objective of this paper is to review the results of recent studies demonstrating the effects of oral Ig in both pathogenic and non-pathogenic animal models and to suggest a possible mechanism of its action. Overall, purified oral Ig improves growth of healthy (and challenged) rats and defends against enteric infection by immunomodulation, mucin protein and/or modification of commensal microbial composition. The findings contribute to knowledge of how orally administered ovine Ig can influence and enhance key indicators of gut function and overall growth performance in an animal model.

Abstract
Intrinsically labeled dietary proteins have been used to trace various aspects of digestion and absorption, including quantifying the contribution of dietary protein to observed postprandial amino acid and protein kinetics in human subjects. Quantification of the rate of appearance in peripheral blood of an unlabeled (tracee) amino acid originating from an intrinsically labeled protein (exogenous Ra) requires the assumption that there is no dilution of the isotope enrichment of the protein-bound amino acid in the gastrointestinal tract or across the splanchnic bed. It must also be assumed that the effective volume of distribution into which the tracer and tracee appear can be reasonably estimated by a single value and that any recycling of the tracer is minimal and thus does not affect calculated rates. We have assessed these assumptions quantitatively using values from published studies. We conclude that the use of intrinsically labeled proteins as currently described to quantify exogenous Ra systematically underestimates the true value. When used with the tracer-determined rates of amino acid kinetics, underestimation of exogenous Ra from the intrinsically labeled protein method likely translates to incorrect conclusions regarding protein breakdown, including the effect of a protein meal and the anabolic impact of the speed of digestion and absorption of amino acids. Estimation of exogenous Ra from the bioavailability of ingested protein has some advantages as compared with the intrinsically labeled protein method. We therefore conclude that the bioavailability method for estimating exogenous Ra is preferable to the intrinsically labeled protein method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The form of dietary nitrogen (free peptides or intact proteins) may influence the amount of endogenous amino acids found at the terminal ileum of the pig, and it has been speculated that hydrolyzed dietary protein may lead to increased endogenous amino acids. OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of dietary free peptides on ileal endogenous nitrogen and amino acid flows [ileal endogenous nitrogen flow (ENFL), ileal endogenous amino acid flow (EAAFL)] with that of peptides released naturally from dietary protein during digestion, from the same intact parent protein source. METHODS Six pigs (mean body weight: 34 kg) were equipped with a postvalve T-caecum cannula. Semisynthetic test diets contained the same 15N-labeled intact casein (C) or hydrolyzed casein (HC). Pigs received the test diets every sixth day and the corresponding unlabeled diets in the intervening 5-d periods. Digesta were pooled from 4 to 10 h postprandially. EAAFL and ENFL, calculated with reference to the dietary marker titanium dioxide, were determined by isotope dilution for C and HC. RESULTS Ileal EAAFL and ENFL (mean flows n = 5 of 1828 and 1912 μg/g of dry matter intake for diets HC and C, respectively) did not differ (P > 0.05) between pigs fed HC and C. Centrifugation and ultrafiltration of the HC digesta allowed an estimation of label recycling into gut endogenous proteins. Some 20% of ileal endogenous protein (diet HC, ultrafiltered digesta) was 15N-labeled due to tracer recycling. CONCLUSIONS The administration of a casein hydrolysate had no effect on ileal endogenous protein flows compared with C. There was no evidence of enhanced ileal endogenous protein losses with the HC diet.

Abstract
Background Actinidin, a cysteine protease in kiwifruit (KF), increases both the gastric digestion and gastric-emptying rate of beef muscle protein. Objective This study aimed to determine the relation between the rate of digested nitrogen entering the small intestine (SI; a function of the extent of gastric digestion and gastric-emptying rate) and the disappearance of amino acids (AAs) in different parts of the SI at set times postfeeding. Methods Male 9-wk-old pigs (n = 90; mean ± SD body weight: 28 ± 2.9 kg) were fed a diet containing 14% beef for 3 d. The beef-based diet was supplemented with green KF pulp (containing actinidin), gold KF pulp supplemented with actinidin, or gold KF pulp alone (no actinidin). The KF or actinidin amounts corresponded to the intake of 2 KFs/human meal. On day 3, pigs were killed at 0.5, 1, 3, 5, and 7 h postprandially. Stomach chyme was analyzed to determine the rate of digested nitrogen entering the SI. Apparent AA digestibility at set times was determined in the proximal, medial, and distal SI. Polynomial and correlation analyses were conducted. Results The rate of digested nitrogen entering the SI was higher (P < 0.001) with actinidin (e.g., >44% at 5 h postprandially). Actinidin also increased the apparent AA digestibility at the proximal and medial SI (P ≤ 0.05) at set times (e.g., 42% and 15% greater for arginine, respectively), but not in general for the distal SI (P > 0.05). At the proximal SI, apparent AA digestibility was correlated more strongly with the digested nitrogen entering the SI (r = 0.73, P < 0.001; n = 57) than with gastric emptying (r = 0.64, P < 0.001) or gastric protein digestion (r = 0.57, P < 0.001). Similar trends were observed for the medial SI. Conclusion The rate of digested nitrogen entering the SI is an accurate predictor of the rate of AA digestibility and the location of AA absorption in the pig SI.

Abstract
Background The loss of endogenous (nondietary) amino acids (AAs) from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is an important component underlying the adult human dietary requirement for protein and essential AAs (EAAs). Although data with regard to endogenous AA losses to the end of the small intestine have been published, to our knowledge there are no direct measures of colonic endogenous AA losses. Objective The objective was to derive quantitative estimates for daily endogenous protein and EAAs lost from the colon of the adult human. Methods A factorial model was developed for the prediction of endogenous AA losses across the adult human GIT. Estimates of AAs entering the upper GIT lumen were combined with relative protein synthesis rates in the colon to predict colonic AA losses. The AA composition of human colonic endogenous protein was calculated by estimating the relative contributions of epithelial cell protein and mucin protein on the basis of published data for cell shedding in the pig small intestine, small intestinal protein synthesis rates in pigs and humans, and human upper and lower GIT surface areas. Colonic AA losses were summed with empirical estimates of ileal AA losses in humans to estimate total daily GIT endogenous AA losses. Results Colonic AA loss was estimated to total 3.5 g/d in the adult male human, comprising 33% of total GIT endogenous AA loss (10.2 g/d). GIT essential AA losses accounted for 25-97% of the current recommended daily AA requirement for adult humans. For threonine, colonic losses were 54% of total GIT threonine losses, which were 97% of the current recommended daily threonine requirement. Conclusions Colonic endogenous AA losses represent a significant fraction of total GIT endogenous AA losses. The requirement of the GIT for EAAs to replace AAs lost via the gut lumen comprises a substantial proportion of the Recommended Daily Intake of AAs.

Abstract
Background Cooking processes affect the physical, chemical, and structural properties of meat proteins. Cooking may also affect the protein quality of meat, as indicated by the true ileal digestibility of individual amino acids, the content of each truly digestible amino acid, and the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS). Objective The study aimed to determine the effect of the cooking process (raw, not cooked; boiled; grilled; pan-fried; roasted) of beef on true (standardized) ileal amino acid digestibility, true ileal digestible amino acid content, and DIAAS. Methods Beef topside steak was subjected to one of the following conditions: raw, boiled, grilled, pan-fried, or roasted, followed by mincing. The growing pig was used as an animal model for the adult human. Diets containing the raw or cooked meats (10% crude protein content) were fed to growing pigs (n = 6 per diet; mean ± SEM bodyweight, 23.6 ± 0.48 kg) and samples of terminal ileal digesta were collected under anesthesia. True ileal amino acid digestibility of the beef was determined and DIAAS values were calculated. Results There were only minor differences in true ileal amino acid digestibility across cooking conditions with all amino acids having true ileal amino acid digestibility in the range of 90-100%. In general, boiled meat had the highest true ileal digestible amino acid content (total of 724 g/kg dry matter), and roasted meat the lowest (total of 641 g/kg dry matter; P < 0.001). The DIAAS was greater (P < 0.001) for the raw, boiled, and pan-fried meat treatments (97-99%) than for roasted meat (91%) or grilled meat (80%). The high DIAAS (range 80-99%) across cooking conditions confirms that bovine meat is a high-quality protein source. Conclusion Cooking conditions affect the true ileal digestible amino acid content and DIAAS of beef, as determined with the use of the pig model.

Abstract
Background Substantial microbial fermentation may occur mainly in the lower small intestine (SI) of human adults, but there is no established methodology to determine this. Objective The study aimed to develop a combined in vivo and in vitro methodology for ileal fermentation based on the pig as an animal model for digestion in human adults. Methods Several aspects of a combined in vivo/in vitro ileal fermentation assay were evaluated. Male 9-wk-old pigs (n = 30; mean ± SD body weight: 23 ± 1.6 kg) were fed a human-type diet (143, 508, 45, 49, and 116 g/kg dry matter diet of crude protein, starch, total lipid, ash, and total dietary fiber) for 15 d. On day 15, pigs were killed, and the last third of the SI was collected to prepare an ileal digesta-based inoculum. Terminal jejunal digesta (last 50 cm of the second third of the SI) were collected as substrate for the assay to test the form of substrate (fresh or freeze-dried), origin (location in jejunum or SI) of the substrate, storage of the inoculum, incubation time (1.2-6.8 h), pH of the medium, and inoculum concentration (6-26 mg inoculum/100 mg substrate). Results The group of donor pigs used to prepare the inoculum, form of the substrate, origin of the substrate, origin of the inoculum (location in the SI), storage of the inoculum, incubation time, and inoculum concentration did not influence the in vitro ileal organic matter (OM) fermentability (P > 0.05). The in vitro ileal OM fermentability decreased when the pH of the medium increased from 5.5 to 7.5 (31% to 28%; P ≤ 0.05). Predicted (in vivo/in vitro) apparent ileal OM digestibility was similar to the value measured in vivo. Conclusions Thirty-percent of the terminal jejunal digesta OM was fermented in the ileum. Fiber fermentation in the ileum can be studied using the optimized in vivo/in vitro ileal fermentation method.

Abstract
The biological processes underlying the partitioning of amino acids and energy during animal growth are well understood qualitatively. However, if a deeper mechanistic understanding is to be achieved, such as to allow generalised predictions of growth outcomes, these biological processes need to be described quantitatively, along with critical control points. Concepts and rules can be formulated at mechanistic and semi-mechanistic levels, and often reflecting causation, to allow nutrient intake and partitioning to be described in a quantitative manner for different animal and environmental conditions. An overview is given of amino acid and energy partitioning during growth in monogastric animals, in terms of causation and quantitatively based descriptors. Current knowledge is far from complete, and areas requiring new insights and a more in-depth understanding of causative mechanisms include voluntary food-intake control, dynamics of nutrient uptake, temporary post-prandial nutrient storage, relationships among nutrient intakes, protein turnover and maintenance-energy requirement, colonic amino acid uptake in poultry, bioavailability of amino acids other than lysine, diet effects on gut endogenous amino acid loss, inevitable amino acid catabolism, preferential amino acid catabolism, and diet, age and genotype effects on body protein synthesis and degradation.

Abstract
Protein is the only dietary macronutrient required for life. As such, it is reasonable to consider dietary protein as the centerpiece of a healthy eating pattern. To do so requires consideration of what type of protein should be eaten. Account should be taken of the quality of the protein, the density of the protein in the protein food source, and the non-protein components of protein food source. The quality of protein can be quantified based on the amount and profile of essential amino acids (EAAs), as well as the true ileal digestibility of the EAAs in the protein. The density of protein in a food source can be quantified on the basis of the amount of total calories ingested to achieve intake of the daily requirement of all EAAs. Non-protein components of protein food sources can be considered in terms of the amount and nature of fat, carbohydrate and fiber, as well as the content of micronutrients. Potential beneficial effects of high-quality protein food sources should be balanced against any possible adverse effects. When all of these factors are considered we conclude that animal-based protein foods (e.g., eggs, dairy, meat, fish, poultry) occupy an important place in a healthy eating pattern.

Abstract
One of the limitations for ranking foods and meals for healthiness on the basis of the glycaemic index (GI) is that the GI is subject to manipulation by addition of fat. Postprandial lipemia, defined as a rise in circulating triglyceride containing lipoproteins following consumption of a meal, has been recognised as a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. Many non-modifiable factors (pathological conditions, genetic background, age, sex and menopausal status) and life-style factors (physical activity, smoking, alcohol and medication use, dietary choices) may modulate postprandial lipemia. The structure and the composition of a food or a meal consumed also plays an important role in the rate of postprandial appearance and clearance of triglycerides in the blood. However, a major difficulty in grading foods, meals and diets according to their potential to elevate postprandial triglyceride levels has been the lack of a standardised marker that takes into consideration both the general characteristics of the food and the food’s fat composition and quantity. The release rate of lipids from the food matrix during digestion also has an important role in determining the postprandial lipemic effects of a food product. This article reviews the factors that have been shown to influence postprandial lipemia with a view to develop a novel index for ranking foods according to their healthiness. This index should take into consideration not only the glycaemic but also lipemic responses.

Abstract
Dietary protein quality has been recognized as a critical issue by international authorities because it can affect important functions of the body. To predict protein quality, the FAO introduced the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score. This score depends on ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility; therefore, the assumption is made that AAs are not absorbed in nutritionally relevant amounts from the large intestine. This article reviews the evidence for this assumption by considering the role of the mammalian large intestine in dietary protein and AA digestion and absorption, with particular reference to adult humans. Although most dietary AAs and peptides are absorbed in the small intestine, substantial amounts can enter the large intestine. Nitrogen is absorbed in the large intestine, and a series of animal experiments indicate a potential small degree of AA absorption. In humans, colonocytes have the capacity for AA absorption because AA transporters are present in the large intestine. The absorption of nutritionally relevant amounts of dietary indispensable AAs and peptides in the human large intestine has not been convincingly demonstrated, however.

Abstract
Protein is the most satiating macronutrient and is source dependent, with whey protein thought to be particularly satiating. The purported satiating effect of whey protein may be due to the unique mixture of proteins in whey or to the major constituent individual proteins (β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin). The objective of the study was to compare the effects of isoenergetic (~2100kJ, ~500kcal) preload meals enriched (~50g protein) with either whey protein isolate (WP), β-lactoglobulin (BL) isolate or α-lactalbumin (AL) isolate, on food intake at an ad libitum test meal 120min later and subjective ratings of appetite (hunger, desire to eat, prospective food consumption and fullness) using visual analogue scales (VAS). Twenty adult normal-weight women (mean age 24.2±0.8years; mean BMI 22.7±0.4kg/m2) participated in the study which used a single-blind completely randomised block design, where each subject consumed each of the three preload meals. Energy intake at the ad libitum test meal and total energy intakes (preload+test meal) did not differ between the three preload meals (p>0.05). There were no significant differences observed for the VAS scores and net incremental area under the curve (net iAUC) during the 120min following consumption of the three preload meals for subjective ratings of appetite (p>0.05). The findings show that the satiating effect of whey protein was similar to that of BL or AL individually and suggest that the major whey protein components BL and AL do not mediate the satiating effect of whey protein. The present human trial was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (www.anzctr.org.au) as ACTRN12615000344594.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been assumed that short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colon originate mainly from dietary fiber fermentation. However, SCFAs in the colon are also produced from the fermentation of nondietary material. OBJECTIVES We aimed to predict the relative contributions of dietary and nondietary substrates in the production of SCFAs with the use of a human fecal inoculum for diets containing kiwifruit as a model fiber. METHODS Terminal ileal digesta were collected from ileal-cannulated male pigs [n = 7; mean ± SD: 41.4 ± 2.98 kg body weight] adapted (44-d feeding) to diets containing either 25 g/kg dry matter (DM) of kiwifruit fiber (KFf) (25 KFf) or 50 g/kg DM of KFf (50 KFf) and then again after receiving a fiber-free diet (n = 14) for a further 7 d. Pigs were used as a model for adult humans for digestion in the upper digestive tract (mouth to the terminal ileum). The ileal digesta (either unfractionated or fractionated into crude mucin and microbial fractions) were fermented in vitro for 24 h with the use of a fresh human fecal inoculum to predict SCFA production in the human hindgut. RESULTS SCFAs of nondietary origin were the main source (65%) of total SCFAs predicted to be produced in the human hindgut. The contribution of SCFAs from KFf was only 26% of the total SCFAs, and that from total dietary material was 35%. The higher contribution of nondietary material to total predicted SCFA production was observed at both dietary fiber concentrations. Predicted SCFA intake from dietary fiber was 76 and 105 mmol/kg diet DM intake for the diets containing 25 KFf and 50 KFf, respectively, and from the nondietary substrates it was 178 and 280 mmol/kg diet DM intake, respectively. CONCLUSION A considerable proportion of the SCFAs produced in the human hindgut seems to be derived from the fermentation of nondietary substrates.

Abstract
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recently recommended the adoption of a new and improved scoring system (Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score [DIAAS]) to quantify dietary protein quality. The DIAAS is based on the relative digestible content of the indispensable amino acids (IAAs) and the amino acid requirement pattern. Factors involved in calculation of the DIAAS include: use of the content and profile of IAAs as the basis for quality; methods for determination of the protein and amino acid content of the protein source; accuracy of individual requirement values for IAAs; normalization of IAA requirements by the estimated average requirement for protein; and basing the DIAAS on the true ileal digestibility of each IAA in the test protein. This review outlines the rationale for including each of these factors in the calculation of the DIAAS and describes associated potential errors.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to identify the origin and implications of a nondietary material present in digesta and feces that interferes with the determination of dietary fiber in gastrointestinal contents. Negative values for ileal and fecal digestibility of dietary fiber are commonly reported in the literature for monogastric animal species, including humans. As negative values are not possible physiologically, this suggests the existence of a nondietary material in the gastrointestinal contents and feces that interferes with the accurate determination of dietary fiber digestibility when conventional methods of fiber determination are applied. To date, little attention has been given to this nondietary interfering material, which appears to be influenced by the type and concentration of fiber in the diet. Interestingly, estimates of dietary fiber digestibility increase substantially when corrected for the nondietary interfering material, which suggests that currently reported values underestimate the digestibility of dietary fiber and may misrepresent where, in the digestive tract, fermentation of fiber occurs. A new perspective of dietary fiber digestion in the gastrointestinal tract is developing, leading to a better understanding of the contribution of dietary fiber to health.

Abstract
A recently proposed paradigm suggests that, like their dietary counterparts, digestion of gastrointestinal endogenous proteins (GEP) may also produce bioactive peptides. With an aim to test this hypothesis, in vitro digests of four GEP namely; trypsin (TRYP), lysozyme (LYS), mucin (MUC), serum albumin (SA) and a dietary protein chicken albumin (CA) were screened for their angiotensin-I converting (ACE-I), renin, platelet-activating factor-acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitory (DPP-IV) and antioxidant potential following simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Further, the resultant small intestinal digests were enriched to obtain peptides between 3-10 kDa in size. All in vitro digests of the four GEP were found to inhibit ACE-I compared to the positive control captopril when assayed at a concentration of 1 mg/mL, while the LYS < 3-kDa permeate fraction inhibited renin by 40% (±1.79%). The LYS < 10-kDa fraction inhibited PAF-AH by 39% (±4.34%), and the SA < 3-kDa fraction inhibited DPP-IV by 45% (±1.24%). The MUC < 3-kDa fraction had an ABTS-inhibition antioxidant activity of 150 (±24.79) µM trolox equivalent and the LYS < 10-kDa fraction inhibited 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) by 54% (±1.62%). Moreover, over 190 peptide-sequences were identified from the bioactive GEP fractions. The findings of the present study indicate that GEP are a significant source of bioactive peptides which may influence gut function.

Abstract
It is well known that endogenous bioactive proteins and peptides play a substantial role in the body's first line of immunological defence, immune-regulation and normal body functioning. Further, the peptides derived from the luminal digestion of proteins are also important for body function. For example, within the peptide database BIOPEP (http://www.uwm.edu.pl/biochemia/index.php/en/biopep) 12 endogenous antimicrobial and 64 angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE-I) inhibitory peptides derived from human milk and plasma proteins are listed. The antimicrobial peptide database (http://aps.unmc.edu/AP/main.php) lists over 111 human host-defence peptides. Several endogenous proteins are secreted in the gut and are subject to the same gastrointestinal digestion processes as food proteins derived from the diet. The human gut endogenous proteins (GEP) include mucins, serum albumin, digestive enzymes, hormones, and proteins from sloughed off epithelial cells and gut microbiota, and numerous other secreted proteins. To date, much work has been carried out regarding the health altering effects of food-derived bioactive peptides but little attention has been paid to the possibility that GEP may also be a source of bioactive peptides. In this review, we discuss the potential of GEP to constitute a gut cryptome from which bioactive peptides such as ACE-I inhibitory, renin inhibitory and antioxidant peptides may be derived.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reported negative ileal and total tract dietary fiber (DF) digestibility values are physiologically untenable and suggest the presence of nondietary material in the gut contents that interferes with the DF determination. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to demonstrate the importance of interfering material (IM) when the Prosky method was used to determine DF digestibility. METHODS Fourteen pigs (41.6 ± 3.0 kg) were surgically implanted with ileal T-cannulas. A semisynthetic fiber-free diet and 2 semisynthetic diets containing kiwifruit as the sole fiber source [25 or 50 g fiber/kg dry matter (DM)] were prepared. Titanium dioxide was used as an indigestible marker. Pigs were fed the kiwifruit-containing diets (n=7 per diet) for 44 d, followed by the fiber-free diet (n=14) for 7 d. Ileal digesta and feces were collected over 3 d, starting on days 42 and 49. The flow of IM and the soluble, insoluble, and total DF digestibility were determined. RESULTS Considerable amounts of IM were present when the Prosky method was applied to ileal digesta (12 g/kg DM intake) and feces (28 g/kg DM intake) collected from pigs fed the fiber-free diet after adaptation to the diet containing 50 g/kg DM of fiber. The pigs adapted to the highest fiber concentration had 0.9- and 0.7-fold greater ileal and fecal IM flows than their counterparts adapted to the lowest concentration. In the ileal digesta, crude mucin was the main IM source in the soluble DF fraction (66%). In the ileal digesta and feces, microbial cells were the main IM source in the insoluble DF fraction. The determined ileal soluble DF and total tract insoluble DF digestibilities increased by 44-54% and 78% respectively after correction for IM (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Large amounts of IM are present in ileal digesta and feces of pigs when fiber is determined with the Prosky method, leading to a marked underestimation.

Abstract
Lactobacillus fermentum is commonly found in food products, and some strains are known to have beneficial effects on human health. However, our previous research indicated that L. fermentum AGR1487 decreases in vitro intestinal barrier integrity. The hypothesis was that cell surface structures of AGR1487 are responsible for the observed in vitro effect. AGR1487 was compared to another human oral L. fermentum strain, AGR1485, which does not cause the same effect. The examination of phenotypic traits associated with the composition of cell surface structures showed that compared to AGR1485, AGR1487 had a smaller genome, utilized different sugars, and had greater tolerance to acid and bile. The effect of the two strains on intestinal barrier integrity was determined using two independent measures of paracellular permeability of the intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cell line. The transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) assay specifically measures ion permeability, whereas the mannitol flux assay measures the passage of uncharged molecules. Both live and UV-inactivated AGR1487 decreased TEER across Caco-2 cells implicating the cell surfaces structures in the effect. However, only live AGR1487, and not UV-inactivated AGR1487, increased the rate of passage of mannitol, implying that a secreted component(s) is responsible for this effect. These differences in barrier integrity results are likely due to the TEER and mannitol flux assays measuring different characteristics of the epithelial barrier, and therefore imply that there are multiple mechanisms involved in the effect of AGR1487 on barrier integrity.
