Abstract
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the peritoneum with about 250 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. It is the second most common site for mesothelioma development and accounts for 10-20% of all mesotheliomas diagnosed in the United States. A meeting sponsored by the NIH Office of Rare Diseases was held in Bethesda, Maryland on September 13 and 14, 2004. The objective of this meeting was to review the epidemiology, biology and current surgical and medical management of peritoneal mesothelioma. In addition, the meeting also discussed clinical and pre-clinical evaluation of novel treatments for mesothelioma as well as ongoing laboratory research to better understand this disease. This report summarizes the proceedings of the meeting as well as directions for future clinical and basic research.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus culture positive breast milk was obtained from four mothers of very premature babies. The milk was stored at 0-5 degrees C in a domestic refrigerator for 48 hours or frozen for different durations at -20 degrees C. Cytomegalovirus survived in breast milk despite being frozen for 10 days at -20 degrees C.

Abstract
A parturient presented for elective caesarean section with a history of multiple spinal operations and scoliosis and a biochemical diagnosis of suxamethonium apnoea. She declined any attempt at regional anaesthesia. We describe the use of a thiopental/remifentanil technique to relax the larynx and provide rapid and excellent conditions for laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. The parturient awoke following an uneventful caesarean section with excellent pain relief and no recall. The baby had normal Apgar scores and umbilical blood gas measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been a policy shift away from hospital to community in the services of all those with psychiatric disorders, including those with intellectual disability (ID), in the last 50 years. This has been accompanied recently by the growth of assertive outreach services, but these have not been evaluated in ID services. METHOD In a randomized controlled trial we compared assertive outreach with 'standard' community care, using global assessment of function (GAF) as the primary outcome measure, and burden and quality of life as secondary measures. RESULTS We recruited 30 patients, considerably less than expected; no significant differences were found between the primary and secondary outcomes in the two groups. The differences were so small that a Type II error was unlikely. CONCLUSIONS Reasons for this lack of specific efficacy of the assertive approach are discussed and it is suggested that there is a blurring of the differences between standard and assertive approaches in practice.

Abstract
Possible management strategies to improve water quality in a eutrophic water supply reservoir in Argentina were evaluated using the one-dimensional coupled hydrodynamics and water quality model DYRESM-CAEDYM. The model was used to determine the effects of several different artificial destratification system designs (including both bubble plume diffusers and surface impellers with draft tubes, both separately and in combination), on the biomass of the potentially toxic cyanobacteria Microcystia aeruginosa. The best results were found by using a combination of a deep and shallow diffuser, to break down the seasonal thermocline and therefore limit sediment nutrient release and anoxia, and to enhance vertical mixing in the surface mixed layer, respectively.

Abstract
Macrocyclic alkanes are novel markers derived from the algaenan of Botryococcus braunii (B. braunii) independent of the race of B. braunii. Analysis of a crude oil (Leatherjacket–1, Cretaceous) and a sediment from the Gippsland Basin (Flounder–1 well, Cretaceous) reveal the presence of macrocyclic alkanes, suggesting an input to the organic matter from freshwater alga B. braunii. This is the first report of macrocyclic alkanes in Australian crude oils and in sediments other than torbanites. These compounds are important because they ultimately derive from the algaenan of B. braunii and are thus selectively preserved in crude oils unlike other B. braunii biomarkers that are not always preserved.

'RETCIF': a rapid, sensitive method for detection of viruses, applicable for large numbers of clinical samples. J Virol Methods 2001; 97:77-85. Abstract
Rapid detection of viruses in clinical samples is important for continuing appropriate antiviral treatment and discontinuing unnecessary antibacterial treatment, as well as for excluding viral pathogens. Yet detection of viral agents may require numerous susceptible cell lines. Even with the shell vial culture method, it is cumbersome for handling large volumes of specimens. A procedure has been developed, which is time and cost-saving and uses specific cell lines in a 96-well microtitre plate and monoclonal antibodies (RETCIF-rapid enhanced tissue culture immunofluorescence). Each clinical sample was inoculated into 12 different wells with five different cell lines. Enhancement was achieved by sonication, centrifugation and hormonal supplementation to the medium used. Cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and respiratory viruses were detected by monoclonal antibodies on day 2, whilst varicella zoster virus (VZV) and enteroviruses were detected on days 5 and 7, respectively. During July-December 1998, 3298 patient specimens were compared by RETCIF and a modified shell vial method. Either or both methods isolated 779 viruses (24% positivity rate), whilst both methods detected 621. Of the 779 viruses, 87% (679) were isolated by the shell vial method in an average time of 4.9 days. For RETCIF the respective rate was 92.5% (721), in an average time of 3.0 days. The RETCIF method is a time-saving procedure, with higher isolation rates than the shell vial method.
