Abstract
Fluorescence intensity measurements of chromophore-doped or -labeled polymers have been used for the first time to determine the effects of decreasing film thickness on glass transition temperature, T(g), the relative strength of the glass transition, and the relative rate of physical aging below T(g) in supported, ultrathin polymer films. The temperature dependence of fluorescence intensity measured in the glassy state of thin and ultrathin films of pyrene-doped polystyrene (PS), poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) differs from that in the rubbery state with a transition at T(g). Positive deviations from bulk T(g) are observed in ultrathin PiBMA and P2VP films on silica substrates while substantial negative deviations from bulk T(g) are observed in ultrathin PS films on silica substrates. The relative difference in the temperature dependences of fluorescence intensity in the rubbery and glassy states is usually reduced with decreasing film thickness, indicating that the strength of the glass transition is reduced in thinner films. The temperature dependence of fluorescence intensity also provides useful information on effects of processing history as well as on the degree of polymer-substrate interaction. In addition, when used as a polymer label, a mobility-sensitive rotor chromophore is demonstrated to be useful in measuring relative rates of physical aging in films as thin as 10 nm.

Abstract
Oxytetracycline (OTC) has been used for over 40 years in veterinary medical field. Various forms of oxytetracycline preparations have been marketed, but little information is available on the bioequivalence of OTC preparations. This study was conducted to evaluate the bioequivalence of two OTC powder preparations available in Korea. Fourteen rabbits were randomly allocated into two groups. During the first period, a dose (200 mg/kg) of reference product was orally administered to the rabbits in Group A and test product to those in Group B. After 7-day washout period the reference and test products were given in group B and A, respectively. Blood samples were drawn at 17 points during 48 hours after administration and plasma OTC concentrations were measured by using HPLC. The solution concentrations of OTC dissolved from two products were not significantly different in the dissolution test. The mean area under the curve (AUC0- infinity ) and peak plasma concentration (C(max)) values for test and reference OTCs were 7.22 +/- 3.90 and 11.04 +/- 7.37 microg h/ml, 1.11 +/- 0.65 and 1.85 +/- 1.15 microg/ml, respectively. The relative bioavailability and C(max) of test product to those of reference product was 65.4% and 60.0%, respectively. The ranges of AUC and C(max) of test drug compared to those of reference drug under 90% confidence limits were 27 104% and 28 91.5%, respectively. The results of statistical analysis indicate that the two pivotal pharmacokinetic parameters, AUC and C(max) of test product are not within the 20% of those of the reference, suggesting that the test OTC is not bioequivalent to the reference OTC.

Abstract
Psoriasis is recognized as a chronic, relapsing disorder of the skin, and its clinical course is influenced by various environmental factors. However, only a few articles have addressed the effect of low epidermal hydration status as an exacerbating factor of psoriasis. Our study was performed to investigate the relationship between subjective assessment and quantified data regarding dryness parameters in psoriasis patients. Seventy psoriasis patients were enrolled in our study. Subjective assessments were undertaken by evaluating the extent of involvement, erythema, scale and infiltration of individual lesions. Functional status of stratum corneum was evaluated by measuring electrical capacitance and conductance of the lesional and uninvolved skin of psoriatic patients. In addition, measurement of trans-epidermal water loss was performed. The results showed poor hydration status and barrier function in involved psoriatic epidermis compared with the uninvolved skin. Subjective assessment showed fairly good correlation with the quantified values. In conclusion, the degree of dryness in psoriatic skin lesions--which we presume to be one of the aggravating factors of psoriasis--seemed to be related to disease severity.

Abstract
The relative importance of interface, volume, and thermal scattering in spin-dependent hot-electron transmission of magnetic trilayers is quantified. While interfaces produce significant attenuation (factor 2.2 per interface), the spin asymmetry is dominated by volume scattering. Extracted thermal attenuation lengths (130 A at 300 K for Ni80Fe20) show that thermal spin-wave scattering is stronger than hitherto assumed. This suggests that spontaneous spin-wave emission, rather than the details of the spin-dependent band structure, may cause the strong filtering of minority hot-electron spins.

Abstract
Since 1998, mass urine screening tests have been performed on Korean school children. We have analyzed those patients who showed abnormal urinary findings in the school screening program. Between January 1998 and January 2000, 452 children with abnormal urinary findings visited the Pediatric Kidney Center, Kyung-Hee University Hospital. Sex, age, 24-h urine creatinine clearance, ultrasonography, Doppler scans and renal biopsies were reviewed retrospectively. Results of initial urinalysis are divided into three groups: solely hematuria group (228 cases, 50.4%), solely proteinuria group (98 cases, 21.7%), and combined hematuria and proteinuria group (79 cases, 17.5%). Among the biopsied cases, the proportions representing renal parenchymal diseases were as follows: IgA nephropathy 11.3%, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis 21.9%, others 3.8%. Among the three groups, the combined hematuria and proteinuria group had more frequent chronic renal disease (57.7%) than the other groups. Chronic renal disease was detected in 36.9% of all visiting subjects. In the school screening program a significant number of patients showed abnormal urinary findings, which were associated with chronic renal diseases especially in the combined hematuria and proteinuria group. In conclusion, mass urine screening tests should be mandatory to detect asymptomatic chronic renal disease in school children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The aim of the study was to objectify the effect of a Q-switched Nd-YAG laser on Ota's nevus in view of barrier function, surface contour changes, dermal blood flow, surface color changes and sebum production rate. METHODS Fifteen Korean patients with nevus of Ota (between 14 and 54 years of age) were enrolled. All the patients were treated by Q-switched Nd-YAG laser and followed up for 12 weeks. A reflectance spectrophotometer, a colorimeter, laser Doppler flowmetry, a Tewameter, a Corneometer and a Sebumeter were used to make measurements. RESULTS Pvalues of less than 0.05 were regarded as statistically significant. In skin reflectance measurements, L* values declined for 4 weeks and increased at 12 weeks, indicating that the brightness of the lesions improved. a* values showed a significant increase at 2 and 4 weeks. On the contrary, b* values decreased at 2 weeks. Transepidermal water loss and dermal blood flux showed identical patterns, showing increases at 2 weeks. The water holding capacity decreased at 2 and 4 weeks, and thereafter showed a delayed recovery. Casual sebum production increased at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. The loss of skin roughness was observed at 4 weeks, recovering at 12 weeks, although statistically insignificant. Reflex spectrophotometry did not reflect the changing properties of the skin. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest a useful model for evaluating physiologic skin changes after laser surgery in patients with nevus of Ota.

Abstract
Anisotropic spin-orbit scattering of hot-electron spins in ferromagnets is examined by injecting a hot-electron current into the thin ferromagnetic base of a transistor and measuring the current attenuation as a function of the magnetization orientation. The transmission anisotropy is described by a simple model, from which we extract an effective spin-orbit scattering length of 420 nm for hot-electron spins in Ni(80)Fe(20), independent of temperature. The corresponding scattering time (<0.3 ps) is surprisingly short, suggesting efficient spin-lattice relaxation of hot electrons. The results also unambiguously demonstrate the attenuation of a hot-electron current by an elastic scattering process.

Abstract
Retinal vascular lesions are the most common ophthalmologic manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), occurring in 3% to 29% of cases, generally late in the disease. More rare is the severe vaso-occlusive disease, often termed "retinal vasculitis", which includes central retinal artery occlusion, multifocal arteriolar occlusions, extensive capillary nonperfusion and central venous occlusion. Patients with SLE and raised serum concentrations of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) have a higher risk of developing occlusive ocular vascular disease. We report a case in which retinal involvement was an earlier manifestation of SLE in a patient without ACA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transthoracic echocardiography was used in a rodent animal model to determine whether long-term alcohol consumption (8 and 12 months) was associated with the development of a dilated cardiomyopathy. We also investigated whether alcohol-induced changes in cardiac structure corresponded to activation of the renin-angiotensin system and the natriuretic peptide (NP) system. METHODS Male rats received either the Lieber-DeCarli liquid alcohol diet (EtOH) (9%v/v) (n = 8) or control diet (CON) (n = 8). Echocardiography (echo) was used to determine left-ventricular (LV) dimensions, and isolated heart studies (Langendorff and atrium) were used to assess ex vivo contractility. Plasma and tissue angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE) activity was measured. Gene expression, plasma, and tissue levels of the NPs were determined by northern blot analysis and radioimmunoassay, respectively. RESULTS After 8 months of alcohol consumption, there was a trend for the end diastolic dimension, end systolic dimension, and LV mass to be greater in the 8 month EtOH group compared with the CON group. However, after 12 months of alcohol consumption, significant increases were found between the groups in several echo parameters. Tissue ACE activity (nmoles/min/mg protein) was greater in the 12 month EtOH group compared with the 12 month CON and 8 month EtOH group (p < 0.05). We found no differences between groups in gene expression (messenger RNA), plasma, and tissue levels of the NPs. CONCLUSIONS Echocardiography revealed that 8 to 12 months of alcohol consumption was associated with the development of a dilated cardiomyopathy. However, this was not preceded by an increase in tissue ACE activity, and these changes occurred in the absence of increased plasma and LV tissue levels of the NPs.

Abstract
The effects of physicochemical conditions, such as pH, water hardness, flow rates and natural organic substances on the sensitivity of Ceriodaphnia dubia to the toxic effects of copper were investigated using static bioassay cups and specially designed flow-through bioassay chambers. We found that C. dubia was very sensitive to pH changes and the total copper LC50 values of C. dubia neonates increased by 15-fold as the pH increased from pH 7 to 10. It was also observed that the LC50 values increased sharply upon increasing the water hardness value to 2.4 meq. In addition, increasing flow rates from zero to 50 mL hr(-1) also increased its sensitivity to copper, which was possibly due to hydrodynamic stress. The presence of natural organic substances (humic acid and dissolved organic matter) and suspended particles decreased the toxic effect of copper. This significant decrease in the toxicity of copper in the presence of natural organic materials can be explained by a reduction in the free ion concentration due to complexation. Furthermore, we observed that the kinetics of copper interactions with natural organic materials are a significant factor in the toxic effect of copper and that the acute LC50 values increased with increasing reaction time between solubilized copper and water-borne organics.

Abstract
The liquid ethanol diet is a widely used method of ethanol administration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate fluid balance using a multitude of physiological parameters (electrolytes, osmolality, total serum proteins, fluid intake/output and body weight), during and after the introduction of liquid ethanol diet. Animals were randomized into four different dietary protocols (two control and two ethanol groups) and were placed in metabolic cages for 16 days. Serum electrolytes, as well as the above parameters, were measured before, during and 1 week after the introduction of 9% (v/v) ethanol-containing diet (Lieber-DeCarli: LD). After the first night on 9% (v/v) ethanol LD, animals had significantly decreased diet consumption, urine output and body weight. However, a major finding of this study was that, during the habituation phase, the electrolyte values remained within the normal range for rats and, in particular, serum sodium was not altered at any time point measured in this study. Based upon the findings from this study, it is recommended that body weight be carefully monitored as a measure of the animal's equilibration and physiological adaptation during the initiation of a liquid ethanol diet, since neither the serum sodium nor calculated osmolality values were changed. Our results also highlight the need to offer water to animals during the habituation phase of ethanol consumption. This is because ethanol rats that were offered water ad libitum lost less weight than groups that did not receive water ad libitum, despite consuming the same amount of LD diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the colors of psoriatic lesions, largely determined by erythema and scales, are important clinical indicators, expressing them in an objective manner is difficult. Cutaneous blood flow (CBF) also affects erythema. Serial measurement of these parameters during phototherapy was almost nonexistent. OBJECTIVE The objectives of our study were to observe the changes of color parameters and the CBF of psoriatic lesions during PUVA therapy and to determine their clinical significance. METHODS CBF, measured by laser Doppler flowmetry, and color parameters, measured by tristimulus colorimetry and reflectance spectrophotometry, were assessed in 13 patients with psoriasis who received PUVA therapy. RESULTS The values of CBF, erythema index (EI), and a(*) (color parameter representing red-green axis) in psoriatic lesions were significantly different from those observed in the control sites before therapy. The parameters of psoriatic lesions normalized according to the clinical improvement and approached those of the control sites as PUVA therapy progressed. The values of melanin index (MI), L(*) (color parameter representing white-black axis), and b(*) (color parameter representing yellow-blue axis) showed no significant difference between the psoriatic plaques and the control sites. They all displayed changes toward darkening and indicated tanning induced by PUVA therapy. Serial changes presented a generally unidirectional pattern in the control sites. However, this was not always the case in psoriatic lesions because scale, infiltration, and erythema also affected the measurement of blood flow and the color of the skin. CONCLUSION Color parameters and CBF were closely related with clinical improvement according to consecutive phototherapy. They may serve as objective indices for the visible morphology and underlying lesional pathophysiology of psoriasis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the ultrasonographic (US) findings of normal and acutely torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) of the knee and evaluate the usefulness of US in the injured PCL. MATERIALS AND METHODS US images were obtained in 30 knees in 15 asymptomatic volunteers as a control group and in 35 patients clinically suspected of having an acute PCL injury. Only the distal half of the PCL was evaluated. Of the 35 patients, 28 had their PCL status confirmed: 13 had a normal PCL at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plus clinical examination, and 15 had a torn PCL at either MR imaging and surgery or MR imaging and clinical follow-up. RESULTS Normal PCLs were homogeneously hypoechoic, with a well-defined posterior border. Torn PCLs were heterogeneously hypoechoic (12 [80%] of 15 patients), with an indistinct posterior margin (11 [73%] of 15 patients). Torn PCLs were significantly thicker (range, 12.0-20.0 mm; mean, 15.6 mm +/- 2.5 [SD]; P <.01), as compared with normal PCLs in 13 patients (range, 3.8-5.8 mm; mean, 4.6 mm +/- 1.0; P <.01) and in the volunteers (range, 3.7-6.2 mm; mean, 4.5 mm +/- 1.2; P <.01). CONCLUSION An acutely torn PCL thickens (>10 mm), loses its sharply defined posterior border, and has a heterogeneously hypoechoic appearance. US may be useful as a screening examination for patients suspected of having PCL injury and for deciding whether to perform more expensive MR imaging or surgical intervention.

Abstract
The U6 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein is a critical component of the eukaryotic spliceosome. The first protein that binds the U6 snRNA is the La protein, an abundant phosphoprotein that binds the 3' end of many nascent small RNAs. A complex of seven Sm-like proteins, Lsm2-Lsm8, also binds the 3' end of U6 snRNA. A mutation within the Sm motif of Lsm8p causes Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells to require the La protein Lhp1p to stabilize nascent U6 snRNA. Here we describe functional interactions between Lhp1p, the Lsm proteins, and U6 snRNA. LSM2 and LSM4, but not other LSM genes, act as allele-specific, low-copy suppressors of mutations in Lsm8p. Overexpression of LSM2 in the lsm8 mutant strain increases the levels of both Lsm8p and U6 snRNPs. In the presence of extra U6 snRNA genes, LSM8 becomes dispensable for growth, suggesting that the only essential function of LSM8 is in U6 RNA biogenesis or function. Furthermore, deletions of LSM5, LSM6, or LSM7 cause LHP1 to become required for growth. Our experiments are consistent with a model in which Lsm2p and Lsm4p contact Lsm8p in the Lsm2-Lsm8 ring and suggest that Lhp1p acts redundantly with the entire Lsm2-Lsm8 complex to stabilize nascent U6 snRNA.

Abstract
A comprehensive quality survey for PCDDs/PCDFs in ambient air has been studied in Korea for two years. Monitoring was undertaken at two locations throughout Seoul (urban site) and Incheon (industrial site) in winter and spring. The periods are during 16 to 17 March 1998, 21 to 22 January 1999 and 28 to 29 April 1999 (Seoul) and 25 to 26 March 1998, 18 to 19 January 1999 and 26 to 27 April 1999 (Incheon). The values of PCDDs/PCDFs in ambient air were expressed as concentrations and international TEF values. The contents of PCDDs/PCDFs in urban site (Seoul) were lower than in industrial site (Incheon). The measurements in wintertime were higher than in springtime. The contents of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF with half toxicity of 2,3,7,8-TCDD were high. Thus we assumed to have an interest to the contents of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF. In this study, sample size was small (sample number was only 18) and sampling period was limited by 24 h. Therefore, we need more widespread and long-term surveys in order to estimate the human exposure by inhalation.

Abstract
Glutamate receptors-mediated excitotoxicity is believed to play a role in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. The present study was performed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of fangchinoline, a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, which has a characteristic as a Ca2+ channel blocker, on excitatory amino acids (EAAs)-induced neurotoxicity in cultured rat cerebellar granule neuron. Fangchinoline (1 and 5 microM) inhibited glutamate (1 mM), N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA; 1 mM) and kainate (100 microM)-induced neuronal cell death which was measured by trypan blue exclusion test. Fangchinoline (1 and 5 microM) inhibited glutamate release into medium induced by NMDA (1 mM) and kainate (100 microM), which was measured by HPLC. And fangchinoline (5 microM) inhibited glutamate (1 mM)-induced elevation of intracellular calcium concentration. These results suggest that inhibition of Ca2+ influx by fangchinoline may contribute to the beneficial effects on neurodegenerative effect of glutamate in pathophysiological conditions.

Abstract
A new procedure of operation in acute paraproctitis with transsphincteral purulent canal is proposed. The method is based on deferral transection of sphincter's portion by latex ligature, which ensure minimal diastasis of muscular ends and prevents the development of anal sphincter insufficiency. 35 patients with different forms of transsphincteral purulent canal were operated by this technique. There were other recurrences or anal sphincter insufficiency.

Abstract
Three varieties of methyl citrate and 1-methyl malate were isolated from the fruits of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino through in vitro bioassay-guided isolation for the inhibition on monoamine oxidase(MAO). The IC50 values for MAO-B of 1-monomethyl citrate, 1,3-dimethyl citrate, trimethyl citrate and 1-methyl malate were 0.19, 0.23, 0.61 and 0.25 mM, respectively. However, on MAO-A, their inhibitions showed only marginal activity.

Abstract
Mastoparan B (MP-B) is an antimicrobial cationic tetradecapeptide amide isolated from the venom of the hornet Vespa basalis. NMR spectroscopy was used to study the membrane associated structures of MP-B in various model membrane systems such as 120 mM DPC micelles, 200 mM SDS micelles, and 3%(w/v) DMPC/DHPC (1:2) bicelles. In all systems, MP-B has an amphiphilic alpha-helical structure from Lys2 to Leu14. NOESY experiments performed on MP-B in nondeuterated SDS micelles show that protons in the indole ring of Trp9 are in close contact with methylene protons of SDS micelles. T1 relaxation data and NOE data revealed that the bound form of MP-B may be dominant in SDS micelles. The interactions between MP-B and zwitterionic DPC micelles were much weaker than those between MP-B and anionic SDS micelles. By substitution of Trp9 with Ala9, the pore-forming activity of MP-B was decreased dramatically. All of these results imply that strong electrostatic interactions between the positively charged Lys residues in MP-B and the anionic phospholipid head groups must be the primary factor for MP-B binding to the cell membrane. Then, insertion of the indole ring of Trp9 into the membrane, as well as the amphiphilic alpha-helical structures of MP-B may allow MP-B to span the lipid bilayer through the C-terminal portion. These structural features are crucial for the potent antibiotic activities of MP-B.

Abstract
Porokeratosis is a genodermatosis characterized by abnormal epidermal keratinization with the histologic finding of cornoid lamella. To date, five clinical variants have been identified. However, the coexistence of these variants in a single patient has been described only rarely. We report a 5-year-old girl with the simultaneous occurrence of porokeratotic lesions in linear and disseminated patterns. Linear lesions were detected at birth and the disseminated lesions developed at the age of 3 years. Histologically the lesions had cornoid lamella, which is typical of this condition.

Abstract
A 20-residue hybrid peptide CA(1-8)-MA(1-12) (CA-MA), incorporating residues 1-8 of cecropin A (CA) and residues 1-12 of magainin 2 (MA), has potent antimicrobial activity without toxicity against human erythrocytes. To investigate the effects of the Gly-Ile-Gly hinge sequence of CA-MA on the antibacterial and antitumor activities, two analogues in which the Gly-Ile-Gly sequence of CA-MA is either deleted (P1) or substituted with Pro (P2) were synthesized. The role of the tryptophan residue at position 2 of CA-MA on its antibiotic activity was also investigated using two analogues, in which the Trp2 residue of CA-MA is replaced with either Ala (P3) or Leu (P4). The tertiary structures of CA-MA, P2, and P4 in DPC micelles, as determined by NMR spectroscopy, have a short amphiphilic helix in the N-terminus and about three turns of alpha-helix in the C-terminus, with the flexible hinge region between them. The P1 analogue has an alpha-helix from Leu4 to Ala14 without any hinge structure. P1 has significantly decreased lytic activities against bacterial and tumor cells and PC/PS vesicles (3:1, w/w), and reduced pore-forming activity on lipid bilayers, while P2 retained effective lytic activities and pore-forming activity. The N-terminal region of P3 has a flexible structure without any specific secondary structure. The P3 modification caused a drastic decrease in the antibiotic activities, whereas P4, with the hydrophobic Leu side chain at position 2, retained its activities. On the basis of the tertiary structures, antibiotic activities, vesicle-disrupting activities, and pore-forming activities, the structure-function relationships can be summarized as follows. The partial insertion of the Trp2 of CA-MA into the membrane, as well as the electrostatic interactions between the positively charged Lys residues at the N-terminus of the CA-MA and the anionic phospholipid headgroups, leads to the primary binding to the cell membrane. Then, the flexibility or bending potential induced by the Gly-Ile-Gly hinge sequence or the Pro residue in the central part of the peptides may allow the alpha-helix in the C-terminus to span the lipid bilayer. These structural features are crucial for the potent antibiotic activities of CA-MA.

Abstract
Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation may activate or deteriorate cultured human epidermal melanocytes, depending on the doses and culture conditions. It is also reported that cultured human epidermal melanocytes derived from different pigmentary phenotypes showed different responses to UVB radiation. In this study, we examined whether apoptosis of melanocytes can be induced by physiologic doses of UVB irradiation using cultured human epidermal melanocytes derived from oriental males of skin types III and IV. Propidium iodide staining for DNA condensation and flow cytometric analyses demonstrated the apoptotic cell death of melanocytes following UVB irradiation (0-30 mJ/cm2). The levels of p53, Bax, and Bcl-2, determined by immunoblotting, revealed a dose-dependent increase in p53 and Bax, but the level of Bcl-2 remained unchanged. Confocal microscopic examination showed that Bax moved from a diffuse to a punctate distribution after UVB irradiation. However, there were no changes in the pattern of distribution of Bcl-2. These data suggest that the high constitutional level of Bcl-2 may protect melanocytes from UVB-induced injury, and that apoptotic death of melanocytes may be induced by the elevation and redistribution of Bax.

Abstract
This study was aimed to determine whether pre-operatively measured linear and nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability might predict the occurrence of the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) or other arrhythmia during strabismus surgery in children (n = 185, mean (SD) age = 8.09 (3.31) years). We compared time- and frequency-domain, and nonlinear dynamic indices of pre-operatively measured RR interval data between the OCR-positive group (maximum heart rate decrement = 20 beat.min-1 during the traction of extraocular muscle, n = 54), OCR-negative group (< 20 beat x min(-1), n = 78) and arrhythmia-positive group (all other arrhythmias; n = 53). pNN50, rMSSD, high-frequency power and nonlinear prediction error were significantly lower in the OCR-positive and arrhythmia-positive groups than in the OCR-negative group. Discriminant analysis using these indices could correctly identify 39/54 (72.2%) OCR-positive patients. Some pre-operatively measured indices of linear and nonlinear heart rate variability, especially when used in combination, are valuable for predicting significant bradycardia during strabismus surgery in children.
