Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze clinical feature and evaluate long-term outcome of patients with thallium poisoning. MATERIALS AND METHODS An observational series of cases with acute thallium poisoning was analyzed retrospectively in West China Hospital of Sichuan University between 2000 and 2010. The clinical data including symptom, determination of thallium level, treatment, neurophysiological examination, and neuropsychological evaluation were analyzed. The patients were followed up until December 2012. RESULTS Seven men and six women were enrolled in the study. The median patient age was 37 years (range: 15-53 years). The median duration of hospitalization was 44 days (range: 7-72). All the patients were misdiagnosed initially. One patient died in the hospital. The other 12 patients were followed for a median of 7 years (range: 1-12 years) after discharge from hospital. One patient died from leukemia in the first year of follow-up. Long-term outcome results showed peripheral neuropathy improved substantially. However, many patients have mild or moderate sequelae in sensory nerve fibers of distal lower extremity. A sural nerve biopsy in one patient revealed shrunken axons, distorted myelin sheath, and myelinated fibers loss. During follow-up period, problem of intelligence (4/12 patients, 33%), memory impairment (4/12, 33%), anxiety (6/12, 50%), and depression (5/12, 42%) were demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS Neurological symptoms may lead to misdiagnosis of thallium poisoning. Mild or moderate neurological sequelae may last for a long time after thallium poisoning.

Abstract
To observe the effects of supplemental dietary d-α-tocopherol in relation to dietary energy on growth and immune status in dairy calves, 32 newborn Holstein bull calves were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments for 5 wk in a 2 × 2 factorial, randomized complete block, split-plot design. Calves received moderate growth (MG) or low growth (LG) all-milk dietary treatments, formulated to support daily gains of 0.5 or 0.25 kg/d, respectively, per the dietary energy recommendation for milk-fed calves according to the National Research Council's Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle. Calves in both groups were either injected i.m. with Vital E-A+D (injectable solution of vitamins E, A, and D) on d 1 and supplemented with Emcelle Tocopherol (micellized vitamin E) via milk daily (MG-S and LG-S), or were not supplemented (MG-C and LG-C) during the study period. Total weight gain of MG calves was greater than that of LG calves and tended to be greater in MG-S calves than in MG-C calves. Calves receiving vitamin supplementation demonstrated greater concentrations of plasma α-tocopherol, retinol, and 25-(OH)-vitamin D than did control calves, whereas MG calves demonstrated a lower concentration of plasma α-tocopherol than did LG calves. The apparent increased utilization of α-tocopherol by MG calves was accompanied by a rise in serum haptoglobin, a positive acute-phase protein and indicator of inflammation, especially in MG-C calves. Serum amyloid A, also a positive acute-phase protein, was not different among groups, but was elevated from baseline in all groups during wk 1 through 3. Plasma IgG1 concentrations were higher in MG-S and LG-S calves than in their nonsupplemented dietary counterparts, whereas plasma IgG2, IgA, and IgM concentrations were not different among groups. In summary, dietary supplementation of d-α-tocopherol improved plasma α-tocopherol status and tended to increase growth in calves fed for 0.5 kg of average daily gain. Vitamin supplementation ameliorated the rise of serum haptoglobin associated with acute inflammation in MG calves, and may have improved passive transfer of maternal antibody. These results indicate a role for α-tocopherol in prevention of proinflammatory state associated with greater dietary energy and onset of infectious disease.

Abstract
One of the most promising materials for fabricating cold cathodes for next generation high-performance flat panel devices is carbon nanotubes (CNTs). For this purpose, CNTs grown on metallic substrates are used to minimize contact resistance. In this report, we compare properties and field emission performance of CNTs grown via water assisted chemical vapor deposition using Inconel vs silicon (Si) substrates. Carbon nanotube forests grown on Inconel substrates are superior to the ones grown on silicon; low turn-on fields (∼1.5 V/μm), high current operation (∼100 mA/cm(2)) and very high local field amplification factors (up to ∼7300) were demonstrated, and these parameters are most beneficial for use in vacuum microelectronic applications.

Abstract
The study investigated the role of androgen receptor (AR) as a potential target for the treatment of bladder cancer in regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition or transformation (EMT). Cell proliferation, and migration capacity were determined in bladder cancer T24 cells treated with small interfering RNA directed against AR, and expression levels of E-cadherin, β-catenin and N- cadherin were assessed using quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Tumour cell growth was evaluated in vivo in T24 tumour-bearing nude mice receiving electroporation-assisted administration of anti-AR small interfering RNA. It was found that low AR expression decreased proliferation and migration of bladder cancer cells. In vivo experiments showed that silencing AR expression significantly suppressed AR-positive bladder tumour growth with decreased cell proliferation. Low AR level of T24 bladder cancer cells treated with dehydrotestosterone (DHT) decreased expression of E-cadherin, β-catenin and N-cadherin expression, indicating a strong sensitivity to the EMT and In cells with low AR content, TGF-β induced down-regulation of E-cadherin and β-catenin. It is concluded that suppression of AR expression decreased the production of TGF-β, inhibiting EMT and bladder cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo, implying that its use might be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of bladder cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Increasing the protein expression of intracellular Cu/Zn SOD, which is the major endogenous antioxidant enzyme, may attenuate or prevent hypoxia-reoxygenation injury (HRI) in cultured cardiomyocytes. However, ectogenic Cu/Zn-SOD can hardly be transferred into cells to exert biological effects. In this study, we constructed PTD-Cu/Zn SOD plasmid with a kind of translocation structure-Protein transduction domain (PTD) and detected its transmembrane ability and antioxidant effects in H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation injury (HRI). METHODS We constructed the pET-PTD-Cu/Zn SOD (CDs) prokaryotic expression vectors in plasmid that were inserted into E. coli BL21 to induce the protein expression of PTD-Cu/Zn SOD. H9c2 cardiomyocyte HRI was achieved by exposing cardiomyocytes to 12 h hypoxia followed by 2 h reoxygenation. Protein expression of PTD-Cu/Zn SOD in cardiomyocytes was assayed by Western blot and their enzyme activities were investigated by immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. RESULTS In cultured cardiomyocytes hypoxia-reoxygenation injury model, exogenous PTD-Cu/Zn SOD could penetrate cell membrane to clear superoxide anion and decrease hydrogen peroxide level in H9c2 cardiomyocytes subjected to HRI. The level of mitochondrial membrane potential was restored to normal, and the cell apoptosis was reduced in cardiomyocytes with PTD-Cu/Zn SOD treatment during HRI. CONCLUSION Recombinant PTD-Cu/Zn SOD could scavenge intracellular-free superoxide anion, protect mitochondria from damages, and attenuate the hypoxia-reoxygenation injury in cultured cardiomyocytes.

Abstract
Lysosomal enzymes, cathepsin B and D, have been studied in their possible relationship to the ability of malignant cells to invade and metastasize. In the current investigation, these cathepsins were detected immunohistochemically using avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method in the pancreatic cancer cells of 21 patients. The positive rate of identification of cathepsin B and D was 43% and 81%, respectively. Cathepsin D stained more strongly than cathepsin B and the plasma membrane stained quite strongly in two instances. A correlation between the presence of cathepsin B or D in cancer cells and the degree of metastasis to lymph nodes, liver, or lung was not recognized.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after ablation is difficult to predict. The development of AF is associated with inflammation, and inflammatory markers such as big endothelin-1 (big ET-1) reflect inflammatory status. It is unknown, however, whether big ET-1 can be used as a predictor for AF recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between plasma levels of big ET-1 and AF recurrence. METHODS A total of 158 patients who had undergone primary ablation for symptomatic and/or drug-refractory AF, including 103 with paroxysmal and 55 with persistent AF, were included in this study. Left atrial diameter was measured with echocardiography and plasma big ET-1 levels with ELISA. All patients were followed up for at least 12 months and AF recurrence defined as an episode of AF lasting ≥ 30 s, with or without atrial flutter or atrial tachycardia. RESULTS The AF recurrence rate was 44.9% (71/158) during the median follow-up period of 22 (13, 40) months. Plasma levels of big ET-1 in the recurrence group were higher than those in the non-recurrence group in all patients [0.80 (0.54, 1.30) vs. 0.57 (0.48, 0.72) fmol·L(-) (1), p = 0.001], in patients with paroxysmal AF [0.81 (0.46, 1.30) vs. 0.57 (0.48, 0.70) fmol·L(-) (1), p = 0.009] as well as in patients with persistent AF [0.77 (0.57, 1.28) vs. 0.57 (0.49, 0.89) fmol·L(-) (1), p = 0.034]. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that plasma levels of big ET-1 were associated with AF recurrence in patients with paroxysmal AF (p = 0.037). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that the sinus rhythm maintenance rate was lower in patients with higher big ET-1 levels than those with lower levels (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Baseline plasma big ET-1 levels are associated with AF recurrence after primary ablation procedure in patients with paroxysmal AF, and may be used in the prediction of AF recurrence in these patients.

Abstract
The p16(INK4a) gene is a cell cycle inhibitor and a major tumour suppressor protein, but the regulation and effects on tumour cells' invasion process of p16(INK4a) is poorly known. A role for p16(INK4a) in basal cell carcinoma is suggested by the observation that p16(INK4a) was upregulated at the invasive front of the majority of basal cell carcinomas with infiltrative growth patterns, accompanied by cessation of proliferation. In this paper, we explore whether there is a difference of tumour cells' proliferative activity between the centre and the invasion front tissues of human colorectal cancer and its relationship with the expression and methylation status of p16(INK4a) gene. We obtained the centre and the invasion front tissues of colorectal cancer respectively by the technology of laser mircodissection. The expressions of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen ki67 and p16(INK4a) were assessed by immunohistochemistry, methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MS-PCR) and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the different areas. There was a significant difference in the expressions of ki67 between the centre and the invasion front tissues (p < 0.05). The difference did not correlate with age, sex, Dukes stage but did correlate with expression of p16(INK4a) gene (chi(2) = 25.37, p < 0.01). Furthermore, hypermethylation of the promoter was the major mechanism of inactivation of p16(INK4a) in the centre areas. Demethylation of the p16(INK4a) promoter, the elevated expression of p16(INK4a) protein and mRNA level was proved in the invasion front. Our finding suggested that enhanced invasion in tumours was accompanied by ceased proliferation in the invasion fronts of human colorectal cancer. This interesting phenomenon may be due to not only the microenvironment, but also the molecular changes such as p16(INK4a) status.
