Radiation-enhancing effect of sodium glycididazole in patients suffering from non-small cell lung cancer with multiple brain metastases: A randomized, placebo-controlled study

PURPOSE

Median survival of patients with brain metastases from non-small cell lung cancer is poor. This study was to investigate the radiation-enhancing effect of sodium glycididazole combined with whole-brain radiotherapy of multiple brain metastases from non-small cell lung cancer.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Sixty-four patients with multiple brain metastases from non-small cell lung cancer were included: the study group (n=32) received whole-brain radiotherapy combined with sodium glycididazole at a dose of 700mg/m(2) intravenous infusion 30minutes before radiotherapy, three times a week; the control group (n=32) only received whole-brain radiotherapy. The primary end point was central nervous system (CNS) progression-free survival and overall survival. The treatment-related toxicity was also recorded.

RESULTS

The CNS disease control rate was better (90.6% vs 65.6%, P=0.016) in the study group than in the control group at 3 month of follow-up. The median CNS progression-free survival time was longer in the study group than in the control group (7.0 months vs 4.0 months, P=0.038). There was no significant difference of the median overall survival time between the study group and the control group (11.0 months vs 9.0 months, P=0.418). On the other hand, the treatment-related toxicity showed no statistically significant difference between these two groups (P>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The study indicated that sodium glycididazole was an effective, promising radiation-enhancing agent that improved CNS disease control rate, extended the median CNS progression-free survival time and was well tolerated in patients suffering from non-small cell lung cancer with multiple brain metastases.

Modulation of photonic nanojets generated by microspheres decorated with concentric rings

A novel design of decorating microsphere surface with concentric rings to modulate the photonic nanojet (PNJ) is investigated. By introducing the concentric ring structures into the illumination side of the microspheres, a reduction of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) intensity of the PNJ by 29.1%, compared to that without the decoration, can be achieved numerically. Key design parameters, such as ring number and depth, are analyzed. Engineered microsphere with four uniformly distributed rings etched at a depth of 1.2 μm and width of 0.25 μm can generate PNJ at a FWHM of 0.485 λ (λ = 400nm). Experiments were carried out by direct observation of the PNJ with an optical microscope under 405 nm laser illumination. As a result, shrinking of PNJ beam size of 28.0% compared to the case without the rings has been achieved experimentally. Sharp FWHM of this design can be beneficial to micro/nanoscale fabrication, optical super-resolution imaging, and sensing.

Conductance measurements of individual polypyrrole nanobelts

We present here a study on the electrical conduction properties of individual polypyrrole nanobelts by using conductive atomic force microscopy and discuss a general effect while probing soft materials. A length-dependent analysis demonstrates that the tip could induce local defects into the polymer structure and, thus diminishes the electrical conduction.

Effectiveness of bacterial infection-related cytokine profile (BIRCP) determination for monitoring pathogen infections in children with hemopathy in the bone marrow inhibition phase

Serum cytokine profiles were analyzed before and after infection in children with hemopathy in the bone marrow inhibition phase to explore the utility of cytokine variations for detecting infections. Serum Th1/Th2 cytokine levels, including tumor necrosis factor, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and interferon, were quantitatively determined by cytometric bead array technology in 480 cases (230 children) of children with hemopathy in the bone marrow inhibition phase with signs of infection, such as fever, and without, to establish baseline and affected levels for comparison with healthy control children. We used the cytokine profile of infected, blood culture-positive children to establish a bacterial infection-related cytokine profile (BIRCP) for predicting infections by pathogens in blood culture-negative children. Overall, 82.9% of children with Gram-negative bacterial infections were accompanied by marked increases of IL-6 and IL-10 levels [>10 times (means ± SD)], whereas only a mild increase of IL-6 levels occurred in Gram-positive bacteria-infected children [>2 times (means ± SD)] and only a mild increase of IFN-γ levels occurred in fungal culture-positive children [>2 times (means ± SD)]. Gram-positive bacterial and fungal infections did not cause a marked increase in IL-6 or IL- 10 levels. The effective rate (86.05%, N = 43) of infectious cases predicted by BIRCP was significantly higher than that obtained using traditional methods for selecting antibiotics based on clinical indications (65.45%, N = 55, P < 0.05). In summary, BIRCP can be used to predict the infections by pathogens in children with hemopathy and to select appropriate antibiotics.

Network-based identification of key proteins involved in apoptosis and cell cycle regulation

OBJECTIVES

Cancer cells differ from normal body cells in their ability to divide indefinitely and to evade programmed cell death. Crosstalk between apoptosis and cell cycle processes promotes balance between proliferation and death, and limits population growth and survival of cells. However, intricate relationships between them and how they are able to manipulate the fate of cancer cells still remain to be clarified. Identification of key factors involved in both apoptosis and cell cycle regulation may help to address this problem.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Identification of such key proteins was carried out, using a series of bioinformatics methods, such as network construction and key protein identification.

RESULTS

In this study, we computationally constructed human apoptotic/cell cycle-related protein-protein interactions (PPIs) networks from five experimentally supported protein interaction databases, and further integrated these high-throughput data sets into a Naïve Bayesian model to predict protein functional connections. On the basis of modified apoptotic/cell cycle related PPI networks, we calculated and ranked all protein members involved in apoptosis and cell cycle regulation. Our results not only identified some already known key proteins such as p53, Rb, Myc and Src but also found that the proteasome, Cullin family members, kinases and transcriptional repressors play important roles in regulating apoptosis and the cell cycle. Furthermore, we found that the top 100 proteins ranked by PeC were enriched in some pathways such as those of cancer, the proteasome, the cell cycle and Wnt signalling.

CONCLUSIONS

We constructed the global human apoptotic/cell cycle related PPI network based on five online databases, and a Naïve Bayesian model. In addition, we systematically identified apoptotic/cell cycle related key proteins in cancer cells. These findings may uncover intricate relationships between apoptosis and cell cycle processes and thus provide further new clues towards future anticancer drug discovery.

HES1 inhibits adipogenesis of porcine mesenchymal stem cells via transcriptional repression of FAD24

Adipogenesis, the development from preadipocytes or mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to mature adipocytes, is regulated by a network of signaling pathways and transcription factors. The involvement of Notch signaling and its effector HES1 in adipogenesis has been investigated in several studies with conflicting results. The underlying mechanisms remain unclear because of the lack of information about HES1 target genes during adipocyte differentiation. As a novel gene transiently up-regulated in early adipogenesis, FAD24 functions as a positive regulator of adipocyte differentiation in both preadipocytes and MSCs. In the present study, we report that the expression level of FAD24 is inversely associated with that of HES1 in porcine MSCs after adipogenic induction. Enforced overexpression of HES1 in MSCs during the early stage of adipogenesis significantly repressed the transcription of FAD24 (P < 0.01) and the other pro-adipogenic genes (P < 0.05), resulting in reduced intracellular lipid accumulation. Sequence analysis showed that porcine FAD24 harbors an evolutionarily conserved HES1 binding site in its proximal promoter region. Functional HES1, but not its dominant-negative mutant, markedly reduced the promoter activity of FAD24 (P < 0.01). Site-directed mutation and chromatin immunoprecipitation further confirmed that HES1 inhibits FAD24 transcription by direct binding to the promoter. Taken together, we identified FAD24 as a novel downstream target of HES1 during adipogenesis. Our data suggest that HES1-mediated repression of FAD24 transcription at the early stage of adipocyte differentiation may contribute to the impaired adipogenesis induced by the Notch-HES1 signaling pathway.

A randomized clinical trial comparing prophylactic upper versus whole-neck irradiation in the treatment of patients with node-negative nasopharyngeal carcinoma

BACKGROUND

This study sought to compare the clinical outcomes of upper versus whole-neck prophylactic irradiation in the treatment of patients with node-negative nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

METHODS

Between November 2005 and June 2012, 301 patients with node-negative NPC were randomly assigned to receive primary plus prophylactic upper neck irradiation (UNI, 153 patients) or primary plus whole-neck irradiation (WNI, 148 patients). Patients in both groups received irradiation to the primary tumor and the upper neck nodal regions, and patients in the WNI group also received irradiation to the lower neck. The main endpoint of the study was to compare the lower neck control rate between the 2 groups.

RESULTS

With a median follow-up period of 39 months (range, 6-84 months), no patient in either group had a cervical node relapse. The overall survival at 3 years was 89.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 84.1%-95.0%) in the UNI group and 87.4% (95% CI = 81.4%-93.5%) in the WNI group (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.866, 95% CI = 0.41-1.82; P = .70). The 3-year relapse-free survival rate was 89.8% and 89.3% (95% CI = 84.2%-95.3% and 83.7%-94.8%, HR = 0.914, 95% CI = 0.42-2.00; P = .82), and the 3-year metastasis-free survival rate was 91.7% and 90.9% (95% CI = 87.0%-96.5% and 85.7%-96.1%) for the UNI and WNI groups, respectively (HR = 1.007, 95% CI = 0.44-2.32; P = .99).

CONCLUSIONS

Prophylactic upper neck irradiation is sufficient for patients with node-negative NPC.

[Effect of cytoskeleton reorganization inhibition on the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase in osteoblasts by fluid shear stress]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of cytoskeleton reorganization inhibition with RNA interference on the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) in primary osteoblasts induced by fluid shear stress (FSS).

METHODS

BALB/c mouse primary cultured osteoblasts were isolated by enzyme digestion technique. Osteoblasts were treated with LIM domain kinase 2 (LIM-2) specific siRNA or negative control siRNA, and then were loaded or unloaded by FSS of 1.2 Pa for 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min, respectively. The Western blotting was performed to detect the protein expression levels of P-ERK1/2 and ERK1/2, respectively. Two-way ANOVA and one-way ANOVA were used in data analysis.

RESULTS

FSS loading for different time (0, 5, 15, 30, 60 min) treated with negative RNA inteference had significant effect on the levels of P-ERK/ERK ratio (0.047 ± 0.031, 0.253 ± 0.137, 0.390 ± 0.155, 0.613 ± 0.123, 0.680 ± 0.108, respectively, P < 0.01). Statistical analysis showed that there was significant interaction between FSS and cytoskeleton reorganization inhibition treated with RNA inteference on the levels of P-ERK/ERK ratio (P < 0.01). The levels of P-ERK/ERK ratio increased when osteoblasts were loaded for 5 - 15 min (0.623 ± 0.129 and 0.623 ± 0.064, respectively, P < 0.05) and returned to baseline at 30 min (0.333 ± 0.086), and then reached the peak at 60 min (0.667 ± 0.064, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

FSS could activate ERK1/2 rapidly in primary cultured osteoblasts. Cytoskeleton reorganization inhibition treated with RNA interference speeded-up the activation of ERK1/2 by FSS, which could increase the sensitivity of ERK1/2 to FSS.

Circulation of Coxsackievirus A10 and A6 in hand-foot-mouth disease in China, 2009-2011

Coxsackieviruses A10 (CV-A10) and A6 (CV-A6) have been associated with increasingly occurred sporadic hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases and outbreak events globally. However, our understanding of epidemiological and genetic characteristics of these new agents remains far from complete. This study was to explore the circulation of CV-A10 and CV-A6 in HFMD and their genetic characteristics in China. A hospital based surveillance was performed in three heavily inflicted regions with HFMD from March 2009 to August 2011. Feces samples were collected from children with clinical diagnosis of HFMD. The detection and genotyping of enteroviruses was performed by real-time PCR and sequencing of 5′UTR/VP1 regions. Phylogenetic analysis and selection pressure were performed based on the VP1 sequences. Logistic regression model was used to identify the effect of predominant enterovirus serotypes in causing severe HFMD. The results showed 92.0% of 1748 feces samples were detected positive for enterovirus, with the most frequently presented serotypes as EV-71 (944, 54.0%) and CV-A16 (451, 25.8%). CV-A10 and CV-A6 were detected as a sole pathogen in 82 (4.7%) and 44 (2.5%) cases, respectively. Infection with CV-A10 and EV-71 were independently associated with high risk of severe HFMD (OR = 2.66, 95% CI: 1.40–5.06; OR = 4.81, 95% CI: 3.07–7.53), when adjusted for age and sex. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that distinct geographic and temporal origins correlated with the gene clusters based on VP1 sequences. An overall ω value of the VP1 was 0.046 for CV-A10 and 0.047 for CV-A6, and no positively selected site was detected in VP1 of both CV-A10 and CV-A6, indicating that purifying selection shaped the evolution of CV-A10 and CV-A6. Our study demonstrates variety of enterovirus genotypes as viral pathogens in causing HFMD in China. CV-A10 and CV-A6 were co-circulating together with EV-71 and CV-A16 in recent years. CV-A10 infection might also be independently associated with severe HFMD.

Uniform amorphous lactose microspheres formed in simultaneous convective and dehydration antisolvent precipitation under atmospheric conditions

A simultaneous convection-dehydration and antisolvent precipitation approach has been shown to produce uniform microsized lactose particles from aqueous droplet at atmospheric pressure. Microparticles with high uniformity having diameters of between 1.0 and 2.4 μm have been obtained. The precipitation of the microparticles is driven by a unique self-assembly mechanism that cannot be fully elucidated by supersaturation alone. Further analysis suggests that structural changes in the solvent/antisolvent mixture, due to hydrophobic hydration, could play a role in the precipitation process observed.

Serum levels of selenium in patients with brain metastases from non-small cell lung cancer before and after radiotherapy

PURPOSE

This study was to evaluate the influence of radiotherapy on the selenium serum levels of non-small cell cancer patients with brain metastases.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This prospective study included 95 non-small cell cancer patients with brain metastases treated by radiotherapy from December 2007 until November 2010. Plasma selenium levels were determined before and at the end of the radiotherapy. Age, body mass index (BMI), prior chemotherapy, pathological type and personal habits (smoking and alcoholism) were recorded for each patient.

RESULTS

The mean age was 63 years; the mean BMI was 27.6. Seventy-six patients (80%) were non-smokers. Sixty-two patients (65.3%) showed no drinking habits and 8 (8.4%) have no prior chemotherapy. Thirty-nine patients (41.1%) were adenocarcinoma, 51 (53.7%) were squamous cell carcinoma and five (5.3%) were large cell carcinoma. At the beginning of radiotherapy, the mean selenium level for all patients was 90.4 μg/l and after radiation this value dropped to 56.3 μg/l. Multivariate analysis showed statistically significant difference in the plasma selenium concentration before and after radiotherapy for age (P<0.001), BMI (P<0.001), smoking (P<0.001), alcoholism (P<0.001), prior chemotherapy (P<0.001) and pathological type (P<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Significant reduction in plasma levels of selenium was recorded in patients undergoing radiotherapy, suggesting attention to the nutritional status of this micronutrient and other antioxidant agents.

The link between fibroblast growth factor 21 and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c during lipogenesis in hepatocytes

Recently fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) has been identified as a potent regulator in glucose and lipid homeostasis. Here, we firstly investigated the metabolic role of FGF21 in human liver-derived HepG2 cells, and suggested that overexpression of FGF21 suppressed triglyceride accumulation by inhibiting the transcription of the gene necessary for de novo lipogenesis. The potential mechanism of FGF21 regulating lipogenesis was also explored, which revealed that FGF21 repressed the transcription of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c (SREBP1c), an essential transcription factor promoting expression of lipogenesis-related genes. Overexpression of FGF21 ameliorated the up-regulation of SREBP1c and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in HepG2 cells elicited by FFAs treatment. Moreover, FGF21 could inhibit the transcriptional levels of the key genes involved in processing and nuclear translocation of SREBP1c, and decrease the protein amount of mature SREBP1c. Unexpectedly, overexpression of SREBP1c in HepG2 cells could also inhibit the endogenous FGF21 transcription. Further experiments demonstrated that SREBP1c could significantly attenuate the promoter activity of FGF21. In conclusion, our data identifies a clear link between FGF21 and SREBP1c during lipogenesis in hepatocyte in culture.

UV light emitting transparent conducting tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowires

Multifunctional single crystalline tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowires with tuned Sn doping levels are synthesized via a vapor transport method. The Sn concentration in the nanowires can reach 6.4 at.% at a synthesis temperature of 840 °C, significantly exceeding the Sn solubility in ITO bulks grown at comparable temperatures, which we attribute to the unique feature of the vapor-liquid-solid growth. As a promising transparent conducting oxide nanomaterial, layers of these ITO nanowires exhibit a sheet resistance as low as 6.4 Ω/[Symbol: see text] and measurements on individual nanowires give a resistivity of 2.4 × 10(-4) Ω cm with an electron density up to 2.6 × 10(20) cm(-3), while the optical transmittance in the visible regime can reach ∼ 80%. Under the ultraviolet excitation the ITO nanowire samples emit blue light, which can be ascribed to transitions related to defect levels. Furthermore, a room temperature ultraviolet light emission is observed in these ITO nanowires for the first time, and the exciton-related radiative process is identified by using temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements.

Phagocytic activity, respiratory burst, cytoplasmic free-Ca(2+) concentration and apoptotic cell ratio of haemocytes from the black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon under acute copper stress

The aim of this study was to investigate the cellular toxicity of copper-induced injury to the black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon. The 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h LC(50) (median lethal concentration) of Cu(2+) on P. monodon (11.63+/-1.14g) were found to be 3.49, 1.54, 0.73 and 0.40mgL(-1), respectively. Total haemocyte count (THC), phagocytic activity, respiratory burst (RB), cytoplasmic free-Ca(2+) (cf-Ca(2+)) concentration and apoptotic cell ratio of shrimp were determined after exposure to different concentrations of Cu(2+) (0, 0.05, 0.5, 1.5 and 3.5mgL(-1)) for 0, 6, 12, 24 and 48h. There was no significant effect on the analytic indicator of shrimp exposed to 0.05mgL(-1) Cu(2+). THC decreased after Cu-exposure to 0.5mgL(-1) for 48h, 1.5mgL(-1) for 24h and 3.5mgL(-1) for 12h. Phagocytic activity decreased in P. monodon following 48h exposure to 3.5mgL(-1) Cu(2+). RB was induced after 6h exposure to 0.5, 1.5 and 3.5mgL(-1) Cu(2+). cf-Ca(2+) concentration increased after 48h exposure to 0.5mgL(-1) Cu(2+), and 12h exposure to 1.5 and 3.5mgL(-1) Cu(2+). The percentage of apoptotic cells increased to 9.5%, 16.3% and 18.6% respectively following 48h exposure to 0.5, 1.5 and 3.5mgL(-1) Cu(2+). These results indicate that Cu can induce oxidative stress, elevation of cf-Ca(2+) and cell apoptosis, and inhibit phagocytic activity in the shrimp P. monodon, and the lethal injury of Cu(2+) to P. monodon may be mainly due to the sharp reduction of THC caused by ROS-induced apoptosis.

Model-based analysis and optimization of bioreactor for hematopoietic stem cell cultivation

One of the problems to be solved in attaining the full potentials of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) applications is the limited availability of the cells. Growing HSCs in a bioreactor offers an alternative solution to this problem. Besides, it also offers the advantages of eliminating labour intensive process as well as the possible contamination involved in the periodic nutrient replenishments in the traditional T-flask stem cell cultivation. In spite of this, the optimization of HSC cultivation in a bioreactor has been barely explored. This manuscript discusses the development of a mathematical model to describe the dynamics in nutrient distribution and cell concentration of an ex vivo HSC cultivation in a microchannel perfusion bioreactor. The model was further used to optimize the cultivation by proposing three alternative feeding strategies in order to prevent the occurrence of nutrient limitation in the bioreactor. The evaluation of these strategies, the periodic step change increase in the inlet oxygen concentration, the periodic step change increase in the media inflow, and the feedback control of media inflow, shows that these strategies can successfully improve the cell yield of the bioreactor. In general, the developed model is useful for the design and optimization of bioreactor operation.

Safety and radiation-enhancing effect of sodium glycididazole in locoregionally advanced laryngeal cancers previously treated with platinum-containing chemotherapy regimens: A preliminary report

PURPOSE

To determine the safety and radiation-enhancing effect of sodium glycididazole in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (stage T3-4,N0-3,M0) with conventional radiotherapy.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Patients with locoregional advanced laryngeal cancer (stage T3-4,N0-3,M0) were included: group 1(control, n=30)were not administered of sodium glycididazole; group 2 (test, n=30) received sodium glycididazole at a dose of 700 mg/m(2) intravenous infusion 30 minutes before radiotherapy three times a week. Surrogate end-points of efficacy were tumor and nodal size. Safety parameters were vomiting, nausea, mucositis, laryngeal edema, esophagus and skin reaction, dysphagia, dyspnea, neurological deficit. Patients were evaluated weekly during treatment for 7 weeks and thereafter monthly for 3 months.

RESULTS

In the test, the overall response rate was 88.89% (95%CI, 71.00-97.00%) at 7 weeks and 92.59% (95%CI, 76.00 to 99.00%) at 1 month of follow-up. In the control, the overall response rate was 62.5% (95%CI, 41.00 to 81.00%) at 7 weeks and 58.33% (95%CI, 37.00 to 78.00%) at 1 month of follow-up. The short-term locoregional response rate was better in the test group at 7 weeks (p=0.027) and at 1 month (p=0.005) of follow-up. The test group had significantly more nausea and vomiting in weeks 1 (p=0.047), 2 (p=0.007), and 3 (p=0.01) of treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

The study indicates sodium glycididazole is an effective radiation-enhancing agent that improves short-term locoregional control and is well tolerated in patients with locoregionally advanced laryngeal cancer.

Bis{μ-2-[1-(2-Pyridylmethyl-imino)eth-yl]phenolato}bis-[azido-copper(II)]

The title compound, [Cu(2)(C(14)H(13)N(2)O)(2)(N(3))(2)], was synthesized by the reaction of Cu(NO(3))(2)·3H(2)O with the Schiff base 2-[1-(2-pyridylmethyl-imino)eth-yl]phenol (HL) in methanol-water solution, adding NaN(3) as the bridging ligand. The asymmetric unit contains one half-mol-ecule, the other half being generated by the inversion center. Each Cu(II) atom shows a slightly distorted trigonal-pyramidal geometry formed by two N atoms and one O atom from one Schiff base ligand, by another O atom of a second Schiff base ligand and by an azide N atom. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

Aqua-(1,10-phenanthroline-κN,N')bis-(trimethyl-acetato)-κO,O';κO-cobalt(II)

In the title compound, [Co(C₅H₉O₂)₂(C₁₂H₈N₂)(H₂O)], the Co^II atom is coordinated in a distorted octahedral environment by three carboxyl O atoms of two trimethyl­acetate ligands, one aqua O atom and two N atoms from 1,10-phen­anthroline. The crystal structure is stabilized by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking inter­actions [inter­planar distance between inter­digitating 1,10-phenanthroline ligands = 3.378 (2) Å].

Cloning, characterization, chromosomal mapping and tissue transcription analysis of porcine CREB2 and CREB3 genes

CREB2 and CREB3 are two important members of the ATF/CREB family, which negatively and positively regulates CRE-dependent transcription in vitro. Here we report the cloning, chromosome mapping and tissue transcription analysis of CREB2 and CREB3 in pigs. The full-length coding sequence of CREB2 and CREB3 is 1047 bp and 1098 bp, encoding 348 and 365 amino acids, respectively. Porcine CREB3 comprises nine exons and eight introns, whereas CREB2 consists of three exons and two introns. CREB2 and CREB3 were cytogenetically assigned to porcine chromosome 5p and 1q28, respectively. Tissue transcription analysis revealed that both porcine CREB2 and CREB3 mRNA were ubiquitously detected in all examined tissues. Additionally, we cloned the 5' flank genomic sequence of porcine CREB3 and characterized several putative transcription factor recognition sites including SP1, NF-kappaB, AP-1 and AP-2 in its promoter region. Our studies provide basic molecular information helpful for further investigation of the function of the two genes in pig models.

Evolution of photoluminescence mechanisms of Si(+)-implanted SiO2 films with thermal annealing

The information of band structure of silicon nanocrystal (nc-Si) embedded in SiO2 thin films synthesized by Si ion implantation and subsequent thermal annealing at various temperatures has been obtained from spectroscopy ellipsometric (SE) analysis. The indirect band structure and the energy gap of the nc-Si are not affected by the annealing. In contrast, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra show a continuous evolution with the annealing. Six PL bands located at 415, 460, 520, 630, 760, and 845 nm, respectively, have been observed depending on the annealing temperature. The annealing at 1100 degrees C yields the strongest PL band at 760 nm (approximately 1.63 eV) with the intensity much higher than that of all the other PL bands. Based on the knowledge of the band structure, the 760 nm-PL band could be attributed to the indirect band-to-band transition of the nc-Si assisted by the Si-O vibration of the nc-Si/SiO2 interface with the stretching frequency of approximately 1083 cm(-1) (approximately 0.13 eV). On the other hand, the first four PL bands mentioned above could originate from different extended defects in the oxide matrix, while the 845-nm PL band could be related to the interface luminescent centers.

Observation of Y(2175) in J/psi --> etaphif0 (980)

The decays of J/psi --> etaphif(0)(980)[eta --> gammagamma, phi --> K(+) K(-), f(0)(980) --> pi(+)pi(-)] are analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. A structure at around 2.18 GeV/c(2) with about 5 sigma significance is observed in the phif(0)(980) invariant mass spectrum. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function gives the peak mass and width of m = 2.186+/-0.010(stat)+/-0.006(syst) GeV/c(2) and Gamma = 0.065+/-0.023(stat)+/-0.017(syst) GeV/c(2), respectively, which are consistent with those of Y(2175), observed by the BABAR Collaboration in the initial-state radiation process e(+)e(-) --> gamma(ISR) phif(0)(980). The production branching ratio is determined to be Br(J/psi --> etaY(2175))Br(Y(2175)- -> phif(0)(980))Br(f(0)(980) --> pi(+)pi(-)) = [3.23+/-0.75(stat)+/-0.73(syst)] x 10(-4), assuming that the Y(2175) is a 1(--) state.
