Abstract
Charge excitations in stripe-ordered 214 compounds La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4} and 1/8-doped La2-x(Ba or Sr)xCuO4 are studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the hard x-ray regime. We observe = or approximately 1 eV excitation with a momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nickelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. They are interpreted as collective stripe excitations or anomalous softening of the charge excitonic modes of the in-gap states.

Abstract
The presence or absence of a quantum critical point and its location in the phase diagram of high-temperature superconductors have been subjects of intense scrutiny. Clear evidence for quantum criticality, particularly in the transport properties, has proved elusive because the important low-temperature region is masked by the onset of superconductivity. We present measurements of the low-temperature in-plane resistivity of several highly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals in which the superconductivity had been stripped away by using high magnetic fields. In contrast to other quantum critical systems, the resistivity varies linearly with temperature over a wide doping range with a gradient that scales monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature. It is maximal at a critical doping level (pc) approximately 0.19 at which superconductivity is most robust. Moreover, its value at pc corresponds to the onset of quasi-particle incoherence along specific momentum directions, implying that the interaction that first promotes high-temperature superconductivity may ultimately destroy the very quasi-particle states involved in the superconducting pairing.

Abstract
(NZW x BXSB)F1 mice (W/BF1 mice) have been reported to be a type of autoimmune-prone mice, showing symptoms of proteinuria, anti-DNA antibodies and anti-platelet antibodies. In this paper, we report that W/BF1 mice show hyperproduction of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, responding to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in comparison with normal mice, resulting in induction of death. In normal mice, monocytes/macrophages (Mo/MØ) are the main producer of TNF-alpha, while both Mo/MØ and dendritic cells (DCs) produce TNF-alpha in W/BF1 mice. Because the number of DCs is higher in W/BF1 mice, the main producers of TNF-alpha in W/BF1 mice are thought to be DCs. Moreover, administration of anti-TNF-alpha antibodies rescued the W/BF1 mice from death induced by LPS, suggesting that TNF-alpha is crucial for the effect of LPS. Although there is no significant difference in the expression of Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) on DCs between B6 and W/BF1 mice, nuclear factor kappa b activity of DCs from W/BF1 mice is augmented under stimulation of LPS in comparison with that of normal mice. These results suggest that the signal transduction from TLR-4 is augmented in W/BF1 mice in comparison with normal mice, resulting in the hyperproduction of TNF-alpha and reduced survival rate. The results also suggest that not only the quantity of endotoxin, but also the host conditions, the facility to translate signal from TLR, and so on, could reflect the degree of bacterial infections and prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has recently been recognized that there is a close relationship between spinal cord tethering (SCT) and congenital anorectal malformation (ARM). PATIENTS AND METHODS We evaluated spinal MRI examinations of 28 patients with ARM (14 boys and 14 girls) aged 5 months to 9 years. All patients diagnosed with SCT subsequently underwent operation. Patients were divided into high and low type ARM groups. We reviewed the relationship between SCT and ARM, and evaluated the untethering surgery. RESULTS We evaluated 14 boys (high, 9; low, 5) and 14 girls (high, 4; low, 10). Of these 28 patients, 13 had SCT on MRI. Five out of 13 patients with high type ARM and 8 out of 15 patients with low type ARM had SCT. Seven out of 10 girls with low type ARM had SCT. Ten of these 13 patients with SCT experienced bowel/urological/orthopedic symptoms. SCT symptoms progressed prior to operation in the 2 patients who underwent untethering surgery a few years after their initial MRI examination. Postoperatively, orthopedic symptoms disappeared completely in all patients, but other symptoms did not. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of this study, we recommend routine MRI examination of patients with ARM and early untethering surgery in cases with SCT.

Abstract
It has recently been reported that antigen presentation from dendritic cells (DCs) to T cells occurs in the bone marrow, and that not only tumor antigen-pulsed DCs but also unpulsed DCs have some anti-tumor effects, resulting from the induction of anti-tumor immunity. In this paper, we examined whether dendritic cells induced from bone marrow cells (BMCs) have the capacity to suppress tumor growth and, if so, which route (intravenous, subcutaneous, or intra-bone marrow injection) is best. BALB/c mice that had been subcutaneously inoculated with Meth A (a murine fibrosarcoma cell line) were injected with BMC-derived DCs via the above three routes. We also examined the tumor suppressive effects of DCs from tumor-bearing mice. Although IBM injection showed similar effects to subcutaneous injection on the suppression of tumor growth, intravenous injection was less effective. It seems likely that the IBM injection of DCs activates tumor-specific T cells, resulting in the suppression of the tumor growth. DCs derived from tumor-bearing mice had some effects on the suppression of tumor growth but they were less effective than DCs from untreated mice.

Abstract
Although it is known that sustained activation of classical mitogen-induced protein kinase (MAPK, also known as ERK) induced by nerve growth factor (NGF) plays an important role in the induction of neurite outgrowth, the role of p38 MAPK in neural cell function is still not clear. We developed two neuronal cell lines from PC12 cells, PC12m3 and PC12m32, in which NGF-induced neurite outgrowth is impaired and that show neurite outgrowth in response to hyperosmotic shock. The frequencies of neurite outgrowth of PC12m3 and PC12m32 cells induced by osmotic shock were approximately 10- and 12-fold greater, respectively, than that in PC12 parental cells. The p38 MAPK pathway inhibitor SB203580 but not the ERK pathway blocker U0126 inhibited the ability of PC12m3 and PC12m32 cells to induce neurite outgrowth in response to osmotic shock. Furthermore, expression of a nonactivable form of p38 but not that of wild-type p38 significantly blocked neurite outgrowth induced by osmotic shock. The extent of phosphorylation of p38 MAPK induced by osmotic shock in PC12m32 cells was much greater than that in PC12 parental cells. The upstream kinases MKK3 and MKK6, which phosphorylate and activate p38 MAPK, also showed higher levels in PC12m32 cells than in PC12 parental cells when treated with osmotic shock. Inhibition of p38 MAPK by SB203580 resulted in inhibition of the activity of the transcription factor CREB, which is activated by osmotic shock. These findings indicate that activation of CREB mediated by a p38 pathway distinct from the NGF signaling pathway may be required for neurite outgrowth.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose a learning model using the Actor-Critic method and the feedback-error-learning scheme. The Actor-Critic method, which is one of the major frameworks in reinforcement learning, has attracted attention as a computational learning model in the basal ganglia. Meanwhile, the feedback-error-learning is learning architecture proposed as a computationally coherent model of cerebellar motor learning. This learning architecture's purpose is to acquire a feed-forward controller by using a feedback controller's output as an error signal. In past researches, a predetermined constant gain feedback controller was used for the feedback-error-learning. We use the Actor-Critic method for obtaining a feedback controller in the feedback-error-earning. By applying the proposed learning model to an arm's posture control, we show that high-performance feedback and feed-forward controller can be acquired from only by using a scalar value of reward.

Abstract
We have established a new method for allogeneic pancreatic islet (PI) transplantation: relatively low doses of irradiation followed by simultaneous transplantation of PIs and bone marrow cells (BMCs) via the portal vein (PV). In the present study, we have compared this method with intra-bone marrow (IBM)-bone marrow transplantation (BMT), and with a combination of both methods. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic-recipient rats, Fischer 344 (F344, RT1A(l), RT1B(l)), were irradiated 1 day before transplantation. PIs of Brown Norway rats (BN, RT1A(n), RT1B(n)) were transplanted into the liver of the diabetic F344 rats via the PV. BMCs from BN rats were injected into the recipients' bone marrow (IBM), PV or intravenously (IV) or by a simultaneous combination of PV plus IBM (PV+IBM). We compared graft survival among the groups of '9 Gy+IBM'(10/10 accepted), '9 Gy+PV'(7/10 accepted), '9 Gy+IV'(0/7 accepted), '9 Gy+PV+IBM'(8/8 accepted), '8.5 Gy+IBM'(4/9 accepted), '8.5 Gy+PV'(0/7 accepted), '8.5 Gy+IV'(0/7 accepted), '8.5 Gy+PV+IBM'(9/12 accepted), '8 Gy+IBM'(2/10 accepted) and '8 Gy+PV+IBM'(2/8 accepted). As we reported previously, PV-BMT is more effective in inducing the acceptance of allogeneic PIs than IV-BMT. However, IBM-BMT requires less pretreatment than PV-BMT. (PV+IBM)-BMT was found to be the most effective in inducing the acceptance of allogeneic PIs. These results suggest that allogeneic PI-transplantation in conjunction with (PV+IBM)-BMT could become a viable strategy.

Abstract
Flail chest occurs by blunt chest trauma and is associated with pulmonary contusion, atelectasis, pneumothorax, hemothorax, and respiratory failure. Because of its severity, it may need internal pneumatic stabilization or surgical fixation. Some patients do not need the internal stabilization and are observed conservatively. Some of these patients, however, increase the flail after palliating the pain and getting up. These patients show inefficient ventilation and surgical fixation is needed. The operation should be performed after the improvement of pulmonary contusion. In this paper, we presented 2 patients who showed such course and clarified the surgical methodology.

Abstract
The influence of the consumed carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio on arachidonic acid (AA) production and mycelial morphology was investigated in cultures of Mortierella alpina using shake flasks and a fermentor. The consumed C/N ratio was varied from 5 to 32 under the condition that the total initial amount of carbon and nitrogen sources was 50 g/l. Cellular yield increased markedly at C/N ratios below 7; carbon utilization was switched from cellular growth to lipid biosynthesis in the C/N ratio range of 7-15; lipid biosynthesis was most active when the C/N ratio was in the range of 15-32. However, for C/N ratios higher than 15, the mycelial concentration decreased due to nitrogen limitation but the lipid yield still increased. In the presence of excess nitrogen, the biomass concentration depended on the amount of the nitrogen source, but the AA yield was inversely related to this. On the other hand, in the presence of excess carbon, the fatty acid concentration increased with carbon source concentration but the AA concentration remained constant. From the viewpoint of AA production, the optimum C/N ratio was in the range of 15 to 20 with a balance between the amounts of carbon and nitrogen sources. When an enriched medium was used at a fixed C/N ratio of 20, the cellular and AA concentrations were shown to be proportional to the total concentrations of carbon and nitrogen sources in both flasks and the fermentor. The whole pellet size and width of pellet annular regions did not change with increasing C/N ratio for C/N ratios below 20 in the flask cultures. However, when the C/N ratio was higher than 20, these sizes increased in proportion to the C/N ratio.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the association between type 2 diabetes and bone mineral density. This study included 145 Japanese patients (64 men and 81 women) with type 2 diabetes and 95 non-diabetic control subjects (41 men and 54 women) of similar age. We measured bone mineral density (BMD) at the sites with different cortical/cancellous bone ratio (lumbar spine, femoral neck, and distal radius) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. BMD and Z score at the distal radius were significantly lower in type 2 diabetic patients than those in control subjects, and in type 2 diabetic patients, the Z score at the distal radius was lower than that at their own lumbar spine and femoral neck. In type 2 diabetic patients, negative correlation between BMD and the mean HbA1c during the previous 2 years was found significantly at the distal radius in both genders and at the femoral neck in women. These results indicate the selective cortical bone loss in type 2 diabetes and suggest the importance of also determining BMD at the radius and keeping good metabolic control to prevent bone loss in type 2 diabetic patients.

OBJECTIVE To clarify the progression of autonomic symptoms and functional deterioration in pure autonomic failure (PAF), particularly in comparison with multiple system atrophy (MSA). METHODS The investigation involved eight patients with PAF (M/F = 7/1; mean age at onset, 57 years) and 22 with probable MSA matched for age at onset (M/F = 14/8; onset 56 years). Subjects were followed up for neurological symptoms, activities of daily living, and autonomic function for more than seven years. Autonomic functional tests were carried out. RESULTS In PAF, fainting or sudomotor dysfunction occurred first, followed by constipation and syncope. Urinary dysfunction developed late, and respiratory dysfunction was not evident. This clinical course contrasted sharply with that in MSA, where early urinary dysfunction usually proceeded to sudomotor dysfunction or orthostatic hypotension (p = 0.004), followed by respiratory dysfunction (p = 0.0004). Results of pharmacological tests also distinguished PAF from MSA. Progression and prognosis in patients with PAF did not worsen, unlike the steady progressive autonomic dysfunction in MSA (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, p = 0.0009, and p = 0.003, for progression to modified Rankin scale grade III, IV, V, and death, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The time course and pattern of progression of autonomic failure differed significantly between PAF and MSA. Patients with PAF had slower functional deterioration and a better prognosis.

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S = 1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependence of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q(parallel) = pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev, Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Abstract
After stimulation with anti-CD3 antibody in vitro, CD57(+) T cells showed a greater susceptibility to apoptosis than CD57(-)alphabetaT cell receptor (TCR)(+) T cells (regular alphabeta T cells). The apoptotic fraction of CD57(+) T cells showed an increased production of active caspase-3. An increase in both Fas expression and Fas-ligand (FasL) production was also observed in CD57(+) T cells, whereas the expression of survivin was suppressed in CD57(+) T cells compared to that of regular alphabeta T cells. CD57(+) T cells display a biased expansion of a few Vbeta T cell fractions in individuals, but such Vbeta T cells were not specifically susceptible to CD3-mediated apoptosis. The TCR expression level of CD57(+) T cells was much lower than that of regular T cells and anti-TCR antibody stimulation induced a smaller apoptotic proportion of CD57(+) T cells than did anti-CD3 antibody. Although the CD3epsilon expression levels were similar in both T cell subsets, the CD3zeta level of CD57(+) T cells was significantly higher than that of regular T cells. These results suggest that several apoptotic and anti-apoptotic molecules are involved in the CD3-induced apoptosis of CD57(+) T cells and raise the possibility that the imbalance in expression of the CD3epsilon and CD3zeta chains may also contribute to the susceptibility of CD57(+) T cells to undergo apoptosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is highly dependent on tumour extension and liver function. Recently, two new prognostic scoring systems-the CLIP score, developed by Italian investigators and the BCLC score, developed in Barcelona-have been widely used to assess prognosis in patients presenting with hepatocellular carcinoma. Each system has its own relative limitations. AIMS To create a new prognostic scoring system which is simple, easy to calculate, and suitable for estimating prognosis during radical treatment of early HCC. METHODS A total of 403 consecutive patients with HCC treated by percutaneous ablation at the Department of Gastroenterology, University of Tokyo Hospital, between 1990 and 1997 were used as the training sample to identify prognostic factors for our patients and used to develop the Tokyo score. As a testing sample, 203 independent patients who underwent hepatectomy at the Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery were studied. Prognostic factors were analysed by univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression. RESULTS The Tokyo score consists of four factors: serum albumin, bilirubin, and size and number of tumours. Five year survival was 78.7%, 62.1%, 40.0%, 27.7%, and 14.3% for Tokyo scores 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4-6, respectively. The discriminatory ability of the Tokyo score was internally validated by bootstrap methods. The Tokyo score, CLIP score, and BCLC staging were compared by Akaike information criterion and Harrell's c index among training and testing samples. In the testing sample, the predictive ability of the Tokyo score was equal to CLIP and better than BCLC staging. CONCLUSIONS The Tokyo score is a simple system which provides good prediction of prognosis for Japanese patients with HCC requiring radical therapy.

Abstract
Cases of primary spinal epidural Extra-osseous Ewing's sarcoma (EES) are rarely seen and a good prognosis for EES cannot be expected since a high incidence of local recurrence and metastasis frequently occur. We present a case of cervical spinal epidural EES in a 7-year-old girl with long survival after tumour resection. She also received adjuvant treatment with peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). This management successfully improved her condition and she was in complete remission without neurological deficit 60 months after surgery. Such a good prognosis of EES in the cervical spine is very rare. It is likely that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lead to a diagnosis of this rare type of EES at an early stage of the disease. PBSCT could be useful as an adjuvant to prolong the period of complete remission.
