Abstract
Highlights Natural killer cell activity is dramatically impaired in patients with glioblastoma. Surgical resection of glioblastoma promotes redistribution of NK cell subsets and increases NK cell activity 30 days after surgery. Gross total resection rather than subtotal resection significantly recovers and further increases the impaired NK cell activity in patients with glioblastoma.
Abstract Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor, and median survival is relatively short despite aggressive standard treatment. Natural killer (NK) cell dysfunction is strongly associated with tumor recurrence and metastasis but is unclear in glioblastoma. NK activity (NKA) represents NK cell-secreted interferon-γ (IFN-γ), which modulates immunity and inhibits cancer progression. This study aimed to analyze NKA in glioblastoma patients to obtain a clearer overview of immunity surveillance. From 2020 to 2021, a total of 20 patients and six healthy controls were recruited. Peripheral blood samples were collected preoperatively and on postoperative days (POD) 3 and 30. Then, NKA was measured using the NK VUE kit. Although NKA decreased on POD3, it recovered and further significantly enhanced on POD30, with a nearly five-fold increase compared to baseline (p = 0.004). Furthermore, the percentage of CD56brightCD16− NK cells decreased significantly on POD3 (p = 0.022) and further recovered on PO30. Subgroup analysis of extent surgical resection further revealed that the recovery of impaired NKA was attributable to gross total resection (GTR) rather than subtotal resection (STR). In conclusion, NKA is significantly impaired in glioblastoma, and GTR has demonstrated superior benefit in improving the suppressed NKA and increased CD56brightCD16− NK subset in glioblastoma patients, which may be associated with subsequent patients’ prognosis. Therefore, the goal of performing GTR for glioblastoma should be achieved when possible since it appears to increase NKA cell immunity.

Abstract
Repeat craniotomies to treat recurrent seizures may be difficult, and minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation is an alternative therapy. On the basis of this procedure, we aimed to develop a more reliable methodology which is helpful for institutions where real-time image monitoring or electrophysiologic guidance during ablation are not available. We used simulation combined with a robot-assisted radiofrequency ablation (S-RARFA) protocol to plan and execute brain epileptic tissue lesioning. Trajectories of electrodes were planned on the robot system, and time-dependent thermodynamics was simulated with radiofrequency parameters. Thermal gradient and margin were displayed on a computer to calculate ablation volume with a mathematic equation. Actual volume was measured on images after the ablation. This small series included one pediatric and two adult patients. The remnant hippocampus, corpus callosum, and irritative zone around arteriovenous malformation nidus were all treated with S-RARFA. The mean error percentage of the volume ablated between preoperative simulation and postoperative measurement was 2.4 ± 0.7%. No complications or newly developed neurologic deficits presented postoperatively, and the patients had little postoperative pain and short hospital stays. In this pilot study, we preliminarily verified the feasibility and safety of this novel protocol. As an alternative to traditional surgeries or real-time monitoring, S-RARFA served as successful seizure reoperation with high accuracy, minimal collateral damage, and good seizure control.

Background
Cryoballoon ablation is an important method for pulmonary vein (PV) isolation in treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Previous studies have shown that thawing time, but not freezing time or temperature, impacts PV reconnection during long-term follow-up. However, it is unknown whether the entire or only part of the thawing stage plays a critical role.
Purposes
This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the durability of PV isolation and the time of phase transition from ice to water indicated by thawing plateau (TP) time during a cryoballoon ablation.
Methods
In this retrospective study, 241 PVs from 71 patients who underwent a repeat AF ablation 526 (IQR: 412, 675) days after a cryoballoon ablation were analyzed. The predictive value of procedural parameters for the durability of PV isolation were evaluated. Definitions of different phases of the temperature-time curve are shown in Figure 1. TP Time is defined as the time from 0 to 10°C inside the balloon in the thawing period (the plateau on the curve).
Results
Reconnection was observed in 101 (41.9%) PVs of 53 patients (74.6%). Durable PV isolation was associated with significantly longer TP Time compared with PV reconnection (26.0 vs. 11.0 s, P<0.001). The proportion of durable PV isolations increased with TP Time in a dose-proportional manner (Figure 2). The cut point for PV reconnection was TP Time <15 s with a positive predictive value of 82.1% (sensitivity=63.4%, specificity=90.0%) while for durable PV isolation the cut point was TP Time >25 s with a positive predictive value of 84.6% (sensitivity=55.0%, specificity=86.1%). After the analysis of multivariable logistic regression, location of PV (P<0.01), and TP Time (P<0.05) were shown as independent predictors for durable PV isolation. None of nadir temperature, initial cooling time, effective freezing time, initial thawing time, or late warming time was independent predictor. Accumulated TP Time for all PVs showed a positive linear correlation with the plasma level of troponin T (ρ=0.624, P<0.01).
Conclusions
TP Time is an independent predictor for the durability of PV isolation, and it presents in a dose-proportional manner. TP Time <15 s predicts long-term reconnection while TP Time >25 s predicts durable PV isolation.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the mechanism of reactive oxygen species/thioredoxin-interacting protein/nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor 3 (ROS/TXNIP/NLRP3) pathway in the skin injury of trichloroethylene (TCE) sensitized mice. Methods: In August 2020, 40 female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into control group (n=5) , solvent control group (n=5) , TCE treatment group (n=15) and TCE+(2-(2, 2, 6, 6-Tetrameyhylpiperidin-1-oxyl-4-ylamino)-2-oxoethyl) triphenylphosphonium chloride (Mito TEMPO) treatment group (n=15) . The TCE sensitization model was established. Mice in the TCE treatment group and TCE+Mito TEMPO treatment group were divided into the sensitized positive group and the sensitized negative group according to the skin erythema and edema reactions on the back of the mice 24 h after the last stimulation. The mice were sacrificed 72 h after the last stimulation, the back skin of the mice was taken, and the skin lesions were observed. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect the expression level of NLRP3, and the Western Blot was performed to detect the expression levels of NLRP3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC) , cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase 1 (Caspase 1) , Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and TXNIP proteins in the skin of the mice, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) kit was used to detect the level of intracellular ROS in the back skin tissue. Results: The sensitization rates of TCE treatment group and TCE+Mito TEMPO treatment group were 40.0% (6/15) and 33.3% (5/15) , respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05) . The back skin of the mice in the TCE sensitized positive group was thickened and infiltrated by a large number of inflammatory cells. The number of mitochondria in the epidermis cells was significantly reduced, the mitochondrial crest disappeared and vacuolar degeneration occurred. TCE+Mito TEMPO sensitized positive group had less damage, more mitochondria and relatively normal cell structure. Compared with the solvent control group and corresponding sensitized negative groups, the expression levels of NLRP3, ASC, Caspase 1, IL-1β, TXNIP proteins and the content of ROS in the TCE sensitized positive group and TCE+Mito TEMPO sensitized positive group were significantly increased (P<0.05) . Compared with TCE sensitized positive group, the expression levels of NLRP3, ASC, Caspase 1, IL-1β, TXNIP proteins and the content of ROS in the TCE+Mito TEMPO sensitized positive group were significantly decreased (P<0.05) . Conclusion: ROS/TXNIP/NLRP3 pathway was activated and then encouraged the release of IL-1β, finally aggravated the TCE-induced skin injury.

Abstract
Traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage (tIVH) is associated with increased mortality and disability in traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the significance of tIVH itself remains unclear. Our goal is to assess whether tIVH affects in-hospital mortality and short-term functional outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 5048 patients with TBI during a 5-year period, and 149 tIVH patients were analyzed. Confounding was reduced using the inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) based on propensity score. The association between IVH and outcomes was investigated using logistic regression in the IPTW-adjusted cohort. In our study, after adjustment for analysis, the in-hospital mortality rate (11.4% vs. 9.2%) and the poor functional outcome rate (37.9% vs.10.6%) were significantly higher in the tIVH group than in the non-tIVH group. Factors independently associated with outcomes were age ≥ 65 years, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) severity score, and the Graeb score. The Traumatic Graeb Score, a novel scoring system for predicting functional outcomes associated with tIVH, comprised the sum of the following components: GCS scores of 3 to 4 (=2 points), 5 to 12 (=1 point), 13 to 15 (=0 points); age ≥ 65 years, yes (=1 point), no (=0 points); Graeb score (0-12 points). A Traumatic Graeb Score ≥ 4 is an optimal cutoff value for poor short-term functional outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most challenging complication associated with lower blepharoplasty is ectropion, and the traditional lateral canthopexy or canthoplasty procedure may carry the risk of eyelid malposition or subsequent chemosis. We propose lateral tarsoplasty with a detailed description of the techniques to treat and even prevent ectropion by not involving the medial or lateral canthal ligament so as to avoid complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS Lower eyelid laxity was analyzed with the snap-back test and distraction test before surgery. Approximately 5 mm medial to the lateral canthus, lateral tarsoplasty is performed through a full-thickness pentagonal tarsal-conjunctival resection according to the "overlapping test" for an accurate measurement of the amount of the tarsus to be resected. Seventy-two eyelids that received either ectropion correction or prevention with lateral tarsoplasty over an 8-year period at a single institution were collected and analyzed for this retrospective review. RESULTS Lateral tarsoplasty was performed in 39 patients with a mean age of 63.8 years. Thirteen patients with 20 eyelids presented for ectropion correction, in whom 5 to 10 mm of tarsus was resected, 6.0 mm in average. The other 26 patients with 52 eyelids presented for ectropion prevention, in whom 3 to 7 mm of tarsus was resected, 4.1 mm in average. Apart from temporary mild chemosis, all patients experienced highly satisfactory results without any ectropion or malposition of the involved lower eyelids after a follow-up of 8.1 months in average. CONCLUSIONS For patients with moderate and severe laxity of lower eyelids, lateral tarsoplasty without involvement of the lateral canthal ligament proves to be an effective way to treat and prevent lower eyelid ectropion.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Recurrent pelvic pressure injuries are common among paraplegic patients with spinal cord injury. Most of them experienced multiple surgical treatments because of recurrence. Based on the "spare part" concept, the double fillet flap is feasible when all other reconstructive procedures were exhausted. In this case report, we present the double fillet flap technique to manage recurrent extended pelvic pressure ulcers in a paraplegic spinal cord injury patient.

Abstract
It is vital to remove residual tumor cells after resection to avoid the recurrence and metastasis of osteosarcoma. In this study, a mineral nanomedicine, europium-doped calcium fluoride (CaF2:Eu) nanoparticles (NPs), is developed to enhance the efficacy of adjuvant radiotherapy (i.e., surgical resection followed by radiotherapy) for tumor cell growth and metastasis of osteosarcoma. In vitro studies show that CaF2:Eu NPs (200 μg/mL) exert osteosarcoma cell (143B)-selective toxicity and migration-inhibiting effects at a Eu dopant amount of 2.95 atomic weight percentage. These effects are further enhanced under X-ray irradiation (6 MeV, 4 Gy). Furthermore, in vivo tests show that intraosseous injection of CaF2:Eu NPs and X-ray irradiation have satisfactory therapeutic efficacy in controlling primary tumor size and inhibiting primary tumor metastasis. Overall, our results suggest that CaF2:Eu NPs with their osteosarcoma cell (143B)-selective toxicity and migration-inhibiting effects combined with radiotherapy might be nanomedicines for treating osteosarcoma after tumor resection.

Abstract
Objective: To describe the use of non-erythrocyte blood products transfusion in very preterm and extremely preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) of the Chinese Neonatal Network (CHNN) in 2019, to explore the disparity between different centers, and to further investigate the rationality and standardability of non-erythrocyte blood products transfusion. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on the CHNN cohort of very preterm and extremely preterm infants. All 6 598 infants with gestational age (GA)<32 weeks and admitted to the 57 NICU of CHNN within 24 h of life in 2019 were enrolled. Non-erythrocyte blood products included platelet, plasma, albumin, immunoglobulin, cryoprecipitate and prothrombin complex. Infants who received at least one type of non-erythrocyte blood products were defined in transfusion group. The comparison between infants with and without transfusion was done by t-test, rank-sum test or χ2 test as appropriate. Linear regression model was used to generate adjusted transfusion rate of each center, and to investigate the correlation between adjusted rate and center-level characteristics. Results: A total of 6 598 infants were enrolled in the study, with gestational age of 30.0 (28.7, 31.0) weeks and birth weight of (1 353±312) g, and 43.6 % (2 877) of them were female. Among them, 42.7% (2 816) infants were enrolled in transfusion group, with the times of transfusion as 3 (1, 6) times. Compared to the infants without any transfusion of non-erythrocyte blood products, those infants received transfusion had lower gestational age (Z=17.62, P<0.01), lower birth weight (t=18.64, P<0.01), higher proportion of small-for-gestation age (χ2=31.06, P<0.01), multiple birth (χ²=12.82, P<0.01) and intensive resuscitation in delivery room (χ²=287.52, P<0.01), as well as lower proportion of females (χ²=10.68, P<0.01) and even lower proportion of infants born in this hospital (χ²=78.23, P<0.01). Among the entire study population, albumin (25.4%, 1 674 cases), immunoglobulin (21.5%, 1 417 cases) and plasma (18.9%, 1 245 cases) were the most commonly used non-erythrocyte blood products. Overall, 60.4% (544/901) infants with gestational age <28 weeks received transfusion 4 (2, 8) times. A total of 39.9% (2 272/5 697) infants between 28-31weeks received non-erythrocyte blood products 3 (1, 6) times. The non-erythrocyte blood products transfusion rates of critically-ill and non-critically-ill infants were 62.2% (1 693/2 723) and 29.0% (1 123/3 875) respectively, and the transfusion times were 4 (2,7) and 2 (1,4) times. The transfusion rates varied significantly among different NICU, and the disparities remained obvious after adjustment (adjusted χ²=153.48, P<0.01). Conclusion: Near half of very preterm and extremely preterm infants admitted to Chinese NICU in 2019 receive non-erythrocyte blood products during hospitalization with significant disparities among different hospitals.

Abstract
Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological cancer worldwide. At present there is no effective screening test for its early detection and no curative treatment for women with advanced-stage or recurrent disease. Overexpression of fatty acid synthase is a common molecular feature of a subgroup of sex steroid-related cancers associated with poor prognoses, including endometrial cancers. Disruption of this fatty acid synthesis leads to cell apoptosis, making it a potential therapeutic target. The saturated fatty acid palmitate reportedly induces lipotoxicity and cell death by inducing oxidative stress in many cell types. Here, we explored the effects of palmitate combined with doxorubicin or cisplatin in the HEC-1-A and RL95-2 human endometrial cancer cell lines. The results showed that physiological concentrations of exogenous palmitate significantly increased cell cycle arrest, DNA damage, autophagy, and apoptosis in both RL95-2 and HEC-1-A cells. It also increased the chemosensitivity of both cell types. Notably, we did not observe that palmitate lipotoxicity reflected increased levels of reactive oxygen species, suggesting palmitate acts via a different mechanism in endometrial cancer. This study thus provides a potential therapeutic strategy in which palmitate is used as an adjuvant in the treatment of endometrial cancer.

Abstract
An investigation of the process involved in the production of and dyeing with indigo based on a CO2/O2 sensor device and a cellphone-camera is reported. The former involves transforming indican to indigo, and the latter the process by which indigo and indigo-white are produced. During the process of indigo production, a clear and positive correlation can be observed between the concentration of gas levels (either the production of CO2 or the consumption of O2) and the final yield. The authors found that for the first time that the change in the concentration levels of CO2/O2 can be used as important parameters for indigo dyeing. The optimal time required to produce indigo can be decided by the change of CO2/O2 concentration level. It is no long should depending on the experience of a craftsperson. Furthermore, the optimal time needed to produce indigo also can be decided by the concentration levels of glucose. The color analysis of indigo dyeing can be performed by using a camera and by calculating the RGB and HSV (hue, saturation, value) values.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and rapid synthesis method was developed to prepare silver nanoplates (AgNPLs) with a high aspect ratio. A microwave heating process with a high heating rate and uniform heating was used to promote the silver reduction reaction. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) was used as the precursor of AgNPLs, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) played the role of a solvent and reducing agent. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) with a molecular weight of 29,000 and a PVP/AgNO3 ratio of 10 were used to control the shape of synthesized AgNPLs. By adjusting the optimal microwave heating parameters, temperature ramping rate, reaction time, and reaction temperature, triangular AgNPLs with high aspect ratios could be produced. The synthesized AgNPLs had an edge length up to 700 nm and a thickness of 35 nm with aspect ratios up to 20. The AgNPLs were also used to produce conductive patterns via pen writing with a conductivity of 2 × 106 S/m to demonstrate the feasibility of applying the synthesized nanomaterials for electronic applications.

Methods: Multi-center data of patients who accepted single-drug albumin-bound paclitaxel or combination regimens from 2013 to 2019 were collected and the efficacy and safety were evaluated. Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis, while Log-rank test was used to compare the survival rates. Results: A total of 203 advanced breast cancer cases were enrolled. The median progression-free survival time (PFS) lasted for 4 months, the median overall survival(OS)was 14 months, objective response rate (ORR) was 36.0% while the disease control rate (DCR) was 81.3%. The ORRs of Luminal, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression and triple-negative breast cancer patients underwent albumin-bound paclitaxel treatment were 37.3%, 45.5% and 31.0%, respectively, the DCRs were 85.5%, 68.2% and 78.9%, respectively. The OS of patients with relapse or metastasis who accepted less than two and more than two chemotherapy regimens were 22 months and 11 months (P<0.000 1), the ORRs were 44.9% vs 30.4%, DCRs were 87.2% vs 77.6% (P=0.018). The ORR and DCR of patients who accepted traditional paclitaxel treatment before the albumin-bound paclitaxel treatment were 35.8% and 82.1%, respectively. The common adverse reaction of these patients was numbness of limbs, which incidence rate was 64.5% (131/203), and 61.1% (124/203) were degree 1 to 2. Other adverse reactions including decreased white blood cells, which incidence rate was 56.1% (114/203); nausea and vomit, which incidence rate was 36.9% (75/203); anemia, which incidence rate was 21.2% (43/203); decreased platelet, which incidence rate was 18.7% (38/203); hepatic dysfunction, which incidence rate was 18.2% (37/203). Conclusions: Albumin-bound paclitaxel single or combination regimen is still significant efficient for various molecular subtypes of breast cancer patients or patients with traditional paclitaxel resistance or multi-line chemotherapy failure. Early usage has better prognosis, controllable adverse reaction and prominent clinical application value.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the predictive value of swab cultures of cryopreserved skull flaps during cranioplasties for surgical site infections (SSIs). METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of consecutive patients who underwent delayed cranioplasties with cryopreserved autografts between 2009 and 2017. The results of cultures obtained from swabs and infected surgical sites were assessed. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of swab cultures for SSIs were evaluated. RESULTS The study included 422 patients categorized into two groups, swab and nonswab, depending on whether swab cultures were implemented during cranioplasties. The overall infection rate was 7.58%. No difference was seen in infection rates between groups. There were 18 false-positive and no true-positive swab culture results. All bacteria between swab cultures and SSI cultures were discordant. Meanwhile, there were 19 false-negative swab cultures. The results showed high specificity but low sensitivity for swab cultures to predict SSI occurrence and the pathogens. CONCLUSIONS Owing to low accuracy and sensitivity, swab cultures of cryopreserved autografts should not be routinely performed during delayed cranioplasties.

AIM2 Inflammasome in Tumor Cells as a Biomarker for Predicting the Treatment Response to Antiangiogenic Therapy in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Patients. J Clin Med 2021; 10:jcm10194529. Abstract
Antiangiogenic therapy, such as bevacizumab (BEV), has improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in high-risk patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) according to several clinical trials. Clinically, no reliable molecular biomarker is available to predict the treatment response to antiangiogenic therapy. Immune-related proteins can indirectly contribute to angiogenesis by regulating stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment. This study was performed to search biomarkers for prediction of the BEV treatment response in EOC patients. We conducted a hospital-based retrospective study from March 2013 to May 2020. Tissues from 78 Taiwanese patients who were newly diagnosed with EOC and peritoneal serous papillary carcinoma (PSPC) and received BEV therapy were collected. We used immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and analyzed the expression of these putative biomarkers (complement component 3 (C3), complement component 5 (C5), and absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2)) based on the staining area and intensity of the color reaction to predict BEV efficacy in EOC patients. The immunostaining scores of AIM2 were significantly higher in the BEV-resistant group (RG) than in the BEV-sensitive group (SG) (355.5 vs. 297.1, p < 0.001). A high level of AIM2 (mean value > 310) conferred worse PFS after treatment with BEV than a low level of AIM2 (13.58 vs. 19.36 months, adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 4.44, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.01–9.80, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in C3 (p = 0.077) or C5 (p = 0.326) regarding BEV efficacy. AIM2 inflammasome expression can be a histopathological biomarker to predict the antiangiogenic therapy benefit in EOC patients. The molecular mechanism requires further investigation.

Abstract
Genetic and environmental factors play important roles in cancer progression, metastasis, and drug resistance. Herein, we used a multiomics data analysis to evaluate the predictive and prognostic roles of genetic and epigenetic modulation of c-MET (hepatocyte growth factor receptor)/epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in colorectal cancer (CRC). First, we found that overexpressions of c-MET/EGFR were associated with the infiltration of tumor immune cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts, and were of prognostic relevance in CRC cohorts. We also observed that genetic alterations of c-MET/EGFR in CRC co-occurred with other gene alterations and were associated with overexpression of messenger (m)RNA of some cancer hallmark proteins. More specifically, DNA-methylation and somatic copy number alterations of c-MET/EGFR were associated with immune infiltration, dysfunctional T-cell phenotypes, and poor prognoses of the cohorts. Moreover, we describe two novel gefitinib-inspired small molecules derivatives of 3-phenyl-2H-benzo[e] [1,3]-oxazine-2,4(3H)-dione, NSC777205 and NSC777207, which exhibited wide-spectrum antiproliferative activities and selective cytotoxic preference for drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant melanoma, renal, central nervous system, colon, and non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. We further provided in silico mechanistic evidence implicating c-MET/EGFR/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition in anticancer activities of those compounds. Our overall structure-activity relationship study revealed that the addition of an –OCH3 group to salicylic core of NSC777207 was not favorable, as the added moiety led to overall less-favorable drug properties as well as weaker anticancer activities compared to the properties and activities demonstrated by NSC777205 that has no –OCH3 substituent group. Further in vitro and in vivo analyses in tumor-bearing mice are ongoing in our lab to support this claim and to unravel the full therapeutic efficacies of NSC777205 and NSC777207 in CRC.

Abstract
Disulfiram is a drug used to support the treatment of chronic alcoholism. Recently, it has been found to have an off-label ability to inhibit the growth of ovarian cancer cells. However, the original formulation was designed for use via oral administration, which is not suitable to be given by a direct spray on the affected area. Therefore, in this study, we designed and prepared alginate (ALG) microparticles loaded with disulfiram and superparamagnetic iron oxide (cross-linking disulfiram/SPIO/ALG MPs), which have great potential application for inhibiting the growth of ovarian cancer simultaneously via two treatments, i.e., chemotherapy and hyperthermia. The drug-encapsulating alginate microparticles were prepared using an electrospray system and then cross-linked with calcium chloride ions. The particles were observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and found to be approximately 200 μm in diameter. The disc-shape morphology of the microparticles could be controlled by up to 95%. The drug-encapsulation efficiency of the microparticles reached 98%, and the suppression of tumor growth for the free-form disulfiram-treated group and disulfiram/SPIO/ALG MPs-treated group were 48.2% and 55.9% of tumor volume reduction, respectively, compared with a cisplatin-treated group. A hyperthermic effect can be achieved by applying a magnetic field to oscillate SPIO. The results of this study showed that these cross-linking disulfiram/SPIO/ALG MPs are potential drug carriers for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Sepsis remains a leading cause of death in critical patients. Both excessive inflammatory response and long-term immunosuppression can lead to the death of sepsis patients. As a key pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-17 (IL-17) plays an important role in the body's inflammatory response and immune system. The signal transduction of IL-17 is a key link in maintaining the body's health and participating in the onset and development of sepsis. This review mainly summarizes and discusses the regulation of IL-17 signal transduction and pathogenic and protective role of IL-17 in sepsis.

Abstract
We studied the effects and mechanisms of action of conophylline in different concentrations in the original in vitro model of myocardial fibrosis (treatment of cardiac fibroblasts isolated form the hearts of newborn rats with angiotensin II). Viability, collagen content, and expression of related protein in cardiac fibroblasts were assessed using the MTT-test, Sircol assay, and Western blotting, respectively. Conophylline markedly protected the cultured cells against the development of angiotensin II-induced fibrosis, which was seen from reduced viability of fibroblasts, decreased collagen content, and down-regulation of the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). Conophylline did not affect the TGF-β pathway altered by angiotensin II, but markedly decreased the level of bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4) enhanced by angiotensin II and BMP4 itself. Conophylline produced no effect on phosphorylation of α-SMA and Smad homologue-1/5/8, the classic BMP4 downstream pathway elements, but reduced the level of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) elevated by BMP4. Conophylline did not inhibit the development of myocardial fibrosis in the presence of JNK activator anisomycin. Thus, conophylline inhibited angiotensin II-provoked myocardial fibrosis via the BMP4/JNK pathway.

Abstract
Osteosarcoma is insensitive to radiation. High-dose radiation is often used as a treatment but causes side effects in patients. Hence, it is important to develop tumor cell-- targeted radiotherapy that could improve radiotherapy efficiency on tumor cells and reduce the toxic effect on normal cells during radiation treatment. In this study, we developed an innovative method for treating osteosarcoma by using a novel radiation-enhancer (i.e., carboxymethyl-hexanoyl chitosan-coated self-assembled Au@Fe3O4 nanoparticles; CSAF NPs). CSAF NPs were employed together with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5- ALA) to achieve tumor cell-targeted radiotherapy. In this study, osteosarcoma cells (MG63) and normal cells (MC3T3-E1) were used for an in vitro investigation, in which reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, cell viability assay, clonogenic assay, and western blot were used to confirm the treatment efficiency. The ROS assay showed that the combination of CSAF NPs and 5-ALA enhanced radiation-induced ROS production in tumor cells (MG63); however, this was not observed in normal cells (MC3T3-E1). The cell viability ratio of normal cells to tumor cells after treatment with CSAF NPs and 5-ALA reached 2.79. Moreover, the clonogenic assay showed that the radiosensitivity of MG63 cells was increased by the combination use of CSAF NPs and 5-ALA. This was supported by performing a western blot that confirmed the expression of cytochrome c (a marker of cell mitochondria damage) and caspase-3 (a marker of cell apoptosis). The results provide an essential basis for developing tumor-cell targeted radiotherapy by means of low-- dose radiation.

Abstract
AIM To track the knowledge structure, topics in focus, and trends in emerging research in pterygium in the past 20y. METHODS Base on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), studies related to pterygium in the past 20y from 2000-2019 have been included. With the help of VOSviewer software, a knowledge map was constructed and the distribution of countries, institutions, journals, and authors in the field of pterygium noted. Meanwhile, using co-citation analysis of references and co-occurrence analysis of keywords, we identified basis and hotspots, thereby obtaining an overview of this field. RESULTS The search retrieved 1516 publications from WoSCC on pterygium published between 2000 and 2019. In the past two decades, the annual number of publications is on the rise and fluctuated a little. Most productive institutions are from Singapore but the most prolific and active country is the United States. Journal Cornea published the most articles and Coroneo MT contributed the most publications on pterygium. From co-occurrence analysis, the keywords formed 3 clusters: 1) surgical therapeutic techniques and adjuvant of pterygium, 2) occurrence process and pathogenesis of pterygium, and 3) epidemiology, and etiology of pterygium formation. These three clusters were consistent with the clustering in co-citation analysis, in which Cluster 1 contained the most references (74 publications, 47.74%), Cluster 2 contained 53 publications, accounting for 34.19%, and Cluster 3 focused on epidemiology with 18.06% of total 155 co-citation publications. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that the research of pterygium is gradually attracting the attention of scholars and researchers. The interaction between authors, institutions, and countries is lack of. Even though, the research hotspot, distribution, and research status in pterygium in this study could provide valuable information for scholars and researchers.

Abstract
PURPOSE Altered cognition or hemiparesis can occur in neurocritical but conscious patients, and recognizing pain is challenging. This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) in this specific group. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study included ventilated, conscious patients who had certain neurologic deficits. CPOT scores were assessed before and after nociceptive (turning the patient) and non-nociceptive (measuring body temperature) procedures. The patients' self-reported pain was also recorded using a numerical rating scale (NRS). RESULTS Sixty-three patients were enrolled. The intraclass correlation coefficient was r = 0.975-1.000 (p < 0.001) for turning the patient. Discriminant validation indicated that CPOT scores were significantly higher after turning the patient compared with measuring body temperature (p = 0.025). CPOT scores were positively correlated with NRS when turning the patient (r = 0.724, p < 0.001). After turning, the mean increase in CPOT score was lower in the patients with hemiparesis than in those without hemiparesis (p = 0.079), however it was significantly higher in the patients with cognitive dysfunction compared to those without cognitive dysfunction (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS The CPOT is an appropriate instrument to assess pain in conscious patients, particularly those with cognitive dysfunction. The influence of hemiparesis on the CPOT is noteworthy.
