Measurement of differential cross sections for inclusive isolated-photon and photon+jet production in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

Measurements of inclusive isolated-photon and photon+jet production in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV are presented. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment in 2015, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.26fb - 1 . The cross section for inclusive isolated photon production is measured as a function of the photon transverse energy in a fiducial region. The cross section for photon+jet production is measured as a function of the photon transverse energy in the same fiducial region with identical photon requirements and with the highest transverse momentum jet. All measurements are in agreement with predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD.

Synthesis and structural characterization of CoxFe3−xC (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications

The ferrofluids of pure and Co-substituted iron carbides exhibited heating abilities suitable for bioapplications.

Parkinson's Disease in Intensive Care Unit: An Observational Study of Frequencies, Causes, and Outcomes

Objective:

To analyze the frequency, causes, and outcomes of admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) among Parkinson's disease (PD) population so that preventive measures can be developed.

Methods:

We prospectively observed patients with diagnosis of PD admitted to ICU from January 2014 to December 2016. Based on etiology for hospital admission, they were divided into two groups – related to PD (further divided into direct or indirect) or not associated with PD at all. Etiology for hospitalization was determined from history and investigational data. The primary outcome was death or discharge from the hospital. Factors contributing to ICU admission were analyzed by comparing these patients with a cohort of 50 PD patients admitted to the neurology ward during the same study period. All values were expressed as mean (standard deviation) and percentages using SPSS version 16.0.

Results:

Fifty-three (36%) out of a total of 146 patients required ICU admission. Most common causes leading to admission in decreasing order of frequency were fever (34%), delirium (16%), falls (12%), encephalopathy (8%), gastrointestinal emergencies (6%); while direct disease-related severe dyskinesias were seen only in two patients (4%). 13.7% needed mechanical ventilation and mean duration of ventilation was 5.94 days with mortality rate of 20%. Significant factors predicting ICU admission, and thus, poor outcomes were age >65 years, history of previous admission within the last 12 months, delirium, and hypoalbuminemia. There was no significant association between the incidence of ICU admission and duration of disease or severity of the disease.

Conclusions:

Poor outcome in PD patients is due to systemic causes, hence multidisciplinary teamwork may improve outcome in these patients.

Observation of Medium-Induced Modifications of Jet Fragmentation in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV Using Isolated Photon-Tagged Jets

Measurements of fragmentation functions for jets associated with an isolated photon are presented for the first time in pp and Pb-Pb collisions. The analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Fragmentation functions are obtained for jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30  GeV/c in events containing an isolated photon with p_{T}^{γ}>60  GeV/c, using charged tracks with transverse momentum p_{T}^{trk}>1  GeV/c in a cone around the jet axis. The association with an isolated photon constrains the initial p_{T} and azimuthal angle of the parton whose shower produced the jet. For central Pb-Pb collisions, modifications of the jet fragmentation functions are observed when compared to those measured in pp collisions, while no significant differences are found in the 50% most peripheral collisions. Jets in central Pb-Pb events show an excess (depletion) of low (high) p_{T} particles, with a transition around 3  GeV/c. This measurement shows for the first time the in-medium shower modifications of partons (quark dominated) with well-defined initial kinematics. It constitutes a new well-controlled reference for testing theoretical models of the parton passage through the quark-gluon plasma.

Search for Leptoquarks Coupled to Third-Generation Quarks in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

Three of the most significant measured deviations from standard model predictions, the enhanced decay rate for B→D^{(*)}τν, hints of lepton universality violation in B→K^{(*)}ℓℓ decays, and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, can be explained by the existence of leptoquarks (LQs) with large couplings to third-generation quarks and masses at the TeV scale. The existence of these states can be probed at the LHC in high energy proton-proton collisions. A novel search is presented for pair production of LQs coupled to a top quark and a muon using data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb^{-1}, recorded by the CMS experiment. No deviation from the standard model prediction has been observed and scalar LQs decaying exclusively into tμ are excluded up to masses of 1420 GeV. The results of this search are combined with those from previous searches for LQ decays into tτ and bν, which excluded scalar LQs below masses of 900 and 1080 GeV. Vector LQs are excluded up to masses of 1190 GeV for all possible combinations of branching fractions to tμ, tτ and bν. With this analysis, all relevant couplings of LQs with an electric charge of -1/3 to third-generation quarks are probed for the first time.

Evidence for the Associated Production of a Single Top Quark and a Photon in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first evidence of events consistent with the production of a single top quark in association with a photon is reported. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb^{-1}. Events are selected by requiring the presence of a muon (μ), a photon (γ), an imbalance in transverse momentum from an undetected neutrino (ν), and at least two jets (j) of which exactly one is identified as associated with the hadronization of a b quark. A multivariate discriminant based on topological and kinematic event properties is employed to separate signal from background processes. An excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed, with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. A fiducial cross section is measured for isolated photons with transverse momentum greater than 25 GeV in the central region of the detector. The measured product of the cross section and branching fraction is σ(pp→tγj)B(t→μνb)=115±17(stat)±30(syst)  fb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Measurement of differential cross sections for Z boson production in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

The production of a Z boson, decaying to two charged leptons, in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV is measured. Data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC are used that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.19fb -1 . The cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity and its dependence on the transverse momentum of the Z boson, the jet kinematic variables (transverse momentum and rapidity), the scalar sum of the jet momenta, which quantifies the hadronic activity, and the balance in transverse momentum between the reconstructed jet recoil and the Z boson. The measurements are compared with predictions from four different calculations. The first two merge matrix elements with different parton multiplicities in the final state and parton showering, one of which includes one-loop corrections. The third is a fixed-order calculation with next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy for the process with a Z boson and one parton in the final state. The fourth combines the fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of the process with no parton in the final state with next-to-next-to-leading logarithm resummation and parton showering.

Studies of B s 2 ∗ ( 5840 ) 0 and B s 1 ( 5830 ) 0 mesons including the observation of the B s 2 ∗ ( 5840 ) 0 → B 0 K S 0 decay in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 TeV

Measurements ofB s 2 ∗ ( 5840 ) 0 andB s 1 ( 5830 ) 0 mesons are performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of , collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV . The analysis studies P-waveB s 0 meson decays intoB ( ∗ ) + K - andB ( ∗ ) 0 K S 0 , where theB + andB 0 mesons are identified using the decaysB + → J / ψ K + andB 0 → J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 . The masses of the P-waveB s 0 meson states are measured and the natural width of theB s 2 ∗ ( 5840 ) 0 state is determined. The first measurement of the mass difference between the charged and neutralB ∗ mesons is also presented. TheB s 2 ∗ ( 5840 ) 0 decay toB 0 K S 0 is observed, together with a measurement of its branching fraction relative to theB s 2 ∗ ( 5840 ) 0 → B + K - decay.

Measurement of the top quark mass with lepton+jets final states using p p collisions at s = 13 TeV

The mass of the top quark is measured using a sample of t t ¯ events collected by the CMS detector using proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV at the CERN LHC. Events are selected with one isolated muon or electron and at least four jets from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . For each event the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a t t ¯ hypothesis. Using the ideogram method, the top quark mass is determined simultaneously with an overall jet energy scale factor (JSF), constrained by the mass of the W boson in q q ¯ ' decays. The measurement is calibrated on samples simulated at next-to-leading order matched to a leading-order parton shower. The top quark mass is found to be 172.25 ± 0.08 (stat+JSF) ± 0.62 (syst) GeV . The dependence of this result on the kinematic properties of the event is studied and compared to predictions of different models of t t ¯ production, and no indications of a bias in the measurements are observed.

Shape Features of the Lesion Habitat to Differentiate Brain Tumor Progression from Pseudoprogression on Routine Multiparametric MRI: A Multisite Study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Differentiating pseudoprogression, a radiation-induced treatment effect, from tumor progression on imaging is a substantial challenge in glioblastoma management. Unfortunately, guidelines set by the Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology criteria are based solely on bidirectional diametric measurements of enhancement observed on T1WI and T2WI/FLAIR scans. We hypothesized that quantitative 3D shape features of the enhancing lesion on T1WI, and T2WI/FLAIR hyperintensities (together called the lesion habitat) can more comprehensively capture pathophysiologic differences across pseudoprogression and tumor recurrence, not appreciable on diametric measurements alone.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 105 glioblastoma studies from 2 institutions were analyzed, consisting of a training (n = 59) and an independent test (n = 46) cohort. For every study, expert delineation of the lesion habitat (T1WI enhancing lesion and T2WI/FLAIR hyperintense perilesional region) was obtained, followed by extraction of 30 shape features capturing 14 "global" contour characteristics and 16 "local" curvature measures for every habitat region. Feature selection was used to identify most discriminative features on the training cohort, which were evaluated on the test cohort using a support vector machine classifier.

RESULTS

The top 2 most discriminative features were identified as local features capturing total curvature of the enhancing lesion and curvedness of the T2WI/FLAIR hyperintense perilesional region. Using top features from the training cohort (training accuracy = 91.5%), we obtained an accuracy of 90.2% on the test set in distinguishing pseudoprogression from tumor progression.

CONCLUSIONS

Our preliminary results suggest that 3D shape attributes from the lesion habitat can differentially express across pseudoprogression and tumor progression and could be used to distinguish these radiographically similar pathologies.

Observation of the Z→ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} Decay in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

This Letter presents the observation of the rare Z boson decay Z→ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}. Here, ψ represents contributions from direct J/ψ and ψ(2S)→J/ψX, ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} is a pair of electrons or muons, and the J/ψ meson is detected via its decay to μ^{+}μ^{-}. The sample of proton-proton collision data, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb^{-1}. The signal is observed with a significance in excess of 5 standard deviations. After subtraction of the ψ(2S)→J/ψX contribution, the ratio of the branching fraction of the exclusive decay Z→J/ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} to the decay Z→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} within a fiducial phase space is measured to be B(Z→J/ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-})/B(Z→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})=0.67±0.18(stat)±0.05(syst).

Search for Pair-Produced Resonances Each Decaying into at Least Four Quarks in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

This Letter presents the results of a search for pair-produced particles of masses above 100 GeV that each decay into at least four quarks. Using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015-2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38.2  fb^{-1}, reconstructed particles are clustered into two large jets of similar mass, each consistent with four-parton substructure. No statistically significant excess of data over the background prediction is observed in the distribution of average jet mass. Pair-produced squarks with dominant hadronic R-parity-violating decays into four quarks and with masses between 0.10 and 0.72 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Similarly, pair-produced gluinos that decay into five quarks are also excluded with masses between 0.10 and 1.41 TeV at 95% confidence level. These are the first constraints that have been placed on pair-produced particles with masses below 400 GeV that decay into four or five quarks, bridging a significant gap in the coverage of R-parity-violating supersymmetry parameter space.

Search for new physics in dijet angular distributions using proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV and constraints on dark matter and other models

A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model, based on measurements of dijet angular distributions in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV . The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . The observed distributions, corrected to particle level, are found to be in agreement with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics that include electroweak corrections. Constraints are placed on models containing quark contact interactions, extra spatial dimensions, quantum black holes, or dark matter, using the detector-level distributions. In a benchmark model where only left-handed quarks participate, contact interactions are excluded at the 95% confidence level up to a scale of 12.8 or 17.5TeV, for destructive or constructive interference, respectively. The most stringent lower limits to date are set on the ultraviolet cutoff in the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali model of extra dimensions. In the Giudice-Rattazzi-Wells convention, the cutoff scale is excluded up to 10.1TeV. The production of quantum black holes is excluded for masses below 5.9 and 8.2TeV, depending on the model. For the first time, lower limits between 2.0 and 4.6TeVare set on the mass of a dark matter mediator for (axial-)vector mediators, for the universal quark couplingg q = 1.0 .

Observation of Higgs Boson Decay to Bottom Quarks

The observation of the standard model (SM) Higgs boson decay to a pair of bottom quarks is presented. The main contribution to this result is from processes in which Higgs bosons are produced in association with a W or Z boson (VH), and are searched for in final states including 0, 1, or 2 charged leptons and two identified bottom quark jets. The results from the measurement of these processes in a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment in 2017, comprising 41.3  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, are described. When combined with previous VH measurements using data collected at sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, an excess of events is observed at m_{H}=125  GeV with a significance of 4.8 standard deviations, where the expectation for the SM Higgs boson is 4.9. The corresponding measured signal strength is 1.01±0.22. The combination of this result with searches by the CMS experiment for H→bb[over ¯] in other production processes yields an observed (expected) significance of 5.6 (5.5) standard deviations and a signal strength of 1.04±0.20.

Measurement of the Z / γ ∗ → τ τ cross section in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV and validation of τ lepton analysis techniques

A measurement is presented of the Z / γ ∗ → τ τ cross section in pp collisions ats = 13 TeV , using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb - 1 . The product of the inclusive cross section and branching fraction is measured to be σ ( pp → Z / γ ∗ +X ) B ( Z / γ ∗ → τ τ ) = 1848 ± 12 ( stat ) ± 67 (syst \,+\,lumi) pb , in agreement with the standard model expectation, computed at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The measurement is used to validate new analysis techniques relevant for future measurements of τ lepton production. The measurement also provides the reconstruction efficiency and energy scale for τ decays to hadrons+ ν τ final states, determined with respective relative uncertainties of 2.2 and 0.9%.

Search for third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to a top quark and a τ lepton at s = 13 Te

A search for pair production of heavy scalar leptoquarks (LQs), each decaying into a top quark and a τ lepton, is presented. The search considers final states with an electron or a muon, one or two τ leptons that decayed to hadrons, and additional jets. The data were collected in 2016 in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 Te with the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . No evidence for pair production of LQs is found. Assuming a branching fraction of unity for the decay LQ → t τ , upper limits on the production cross section are set as a function of LQ mass, excluding masses below 900Ge at 95% confidence level. These results provide the most stringent limits to date on the production of scalar LQs that decay to a top quark and a τ lepton.

Demonstration of differences in colonic volumes, transit, chyme consistency, and response to psyllium between healthy and constipated subjects using magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND

In functional gastrointestinal disorders a lack of objective biomarkers limits evaluation of underlying mechanisms. We aimed to demonstrate the utility of magnetic resonance imaging for this task using psyllium, an effective constipation treatment, in patients and controls.

METHODS

Two crossover studies: (i) adults without constipation (controls, n = 9) took three treatments in randomized order for 6 days - maltodextrin (placebo), psyllium 3.5 g t.d.s and 7 g t.d.s., (ii) adults with chronic constipation (patients, n = 20) took placebo and psyllium 7 g t.d.s. for 6 days. MRI was performed fasting and postprandially on day 6. Measurements included small bowel and ascending colon water content, colonic volume, transit time, and MR relaxometry (T1, T2) to assess colonic chyme. Stool water percentage was measured.

RESULTS

7 g psyllium t.d.s. increased fasting colonic volumes in controls from median 372 mL (IQR 284-601) to 578 mL (IQR 510-882), and in patients from median 831 mL (IQR 745-934) to 1104 mL (847-1316), P < .05. Mean postprandial small bowel water was higher in controls and patients after 7 g psyllium t.d.s. vs placebo. Whole gut transit was slower in patients than controls (P < .05). T1 of the descending colon chyme (fasting) was lower in patients (213 ms, 176-420) than controls (440 ms, 352-884, P < .05) on placebo, but increased by 7 g psyllium t.d.s. (590 ms, 446-1338), P < .001. Descending colon T1 correlated with baseline stool water content and stool frequency on treatment.

CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES

MRI measurements can objectively demonstrate the mode of action of therapy targeting intestinal fluid content in constipation.

Measurement of the weak mixing angle using the forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan events in p p collisions at 8 TeV

A measurement is presented of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle ( sin 2 θ eff ℓ ) using the forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan lepton pairs ( μ μ and e e ) produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 TeV at the CMS experiment of the LHC. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 18.8 and 19.6 fb - 1 in the dimuon and dielectron channels, respectively, containing 8.2 million dimuon and 4.9 million dielectron events. With more events and new analysis techniques, including constraints obtained on the parton distribution functions from the measured forward-backward asymmetry, the statistical and systematic uncertainties are significantly reduced relative to previous CMS measurements. The extracted value of sin 2 θ eff ℓ from the combined dilepton data is sin 2 θ eff ℓ = 0.23101 ± 0.00036 (stat) ± 0.00018 (syst) ± 0.00016 (theo) ± 0.00031 (parton distributions in proton) = 0.23101 ± 0.00053 .

Observation of the χ_{b1}(3P) and χ_{b2}(3P) and Measurement of their Masses

The χ_{b1}(3P) and χ_{b2}(3P) states are observed through their ϒ(3S)γ decays, using an event sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data were collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 80.0  fb^{-1}. The ϒ(3S) mesons are identified through their dimuon decay channel, while the low-energy photons are detected after converting to e^{+}e^{-} pairs in the silicon tracker, leading to a χ_{b}(3P) mass resolution of 2.2 MeV. This is the first time that the J=1 and 2 states are well resolved and their masses individually measured: 10513.42±0.41(stat)±0.18(syst)  MeV and 10524.02±0.57(stat)±0.18(syst)  MeV; they are determined with respect to the world-average value of the ϒ(3S) mass, which has an uncertainty of 0.5 MeV. The mass splitting is measured to be 10.60±0.64(stat)±0.17(syst)  MeV.

Measurement of charged particle spectra in minimum-bias events from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

Pseudorapidity, transverse momentum, and multiplicity distributions are measured in the pseudorapidity range | η | < 2.4 for charged particles with transverse momenta satisfyingp T > 0.5 GeV in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy ofs = 13 TeV . Measurements are presented in three different event categories. The most inclusive of the categories corresponds to an inelastic p p data set, while the other two categories are exclusive subsets of the inelastic sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single diffractive dissociation events. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators used to describe high-energy hadronic interactions in collider and cosmic-ray physics.

Constraining Gluon Distributions in Nuclei Using Dijets in Proton-Proton and Proton-Lead Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

The pseudorapidity distributions of dijets as functions of their average transverse momentum (p_{T}^{ave}) are measured in proton-lead (pPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions. The data samples were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. A significant modification of the pPb spectra with respect to the pp spectra is observed in all p_{T}^{ave} intervals investigated. The ratios of the pPb and pp distributions are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations with unbound nucleon and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs). These results give the first evidence that the gluon PDF at large Bjorken x in lead ions is strongly suppressed with respect to the PDF in unbound nucleons.

Scrotal circumference: A predictor of testosterone concentration and certain attributes of seminal vesicles influencing buffalo male fertility

Aim:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of scrotal circumference (SC) with plasma testosterone, seminal vesicles (SVs) weight, and its secretion as measurable indicators of fertility and also to sequence and establish phylogenetic relatedness of certain SV protein genes with other species as such integrated approach is lacking.

Materials and Methods:

Altogether, 59 apparently healthy male buffaloes sacrificed at slaughterhouse were selected (irrespective of breed) for measuring SC and collecting blood and paired SVs. The SC was measured at greater curvature using soft thread. In the present study, blood plasma testosterone, cholesterol, protein, and glucose in addition to SV fructose, citric acid and proteins in SV fluid were also estimated. The SV tissue was fixed in RNAlater for RNA extraction. Male buffaloes were categorized as per total SV weight into Group I (<5.0 g), Group II (5.0-7.84 g), and Group III (>8.0 g) and dentitions-I (≤18 months), II (18-24 months), and III (≥24 months) to assess the effect of weight and dentition age on SC, SV weight, and its certain secretions. Data were analyzed using linear model procedure including Tukey HSD test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Variance inflation and condition index were also used to assess multicollinearity.

Results:

Gross and histomorphological evaluation of SVs did not show any abnormality. Macronutrients (plasma protein, glucose, and cholesterol) showed non-significant (p>0.05) variation between groups. The SC and SV weight varied significantly (p<0.05) with a significant positive relationship with plasma testosterone, SV protein, fructose, and citric acid. In addition, testosterone concentration also showed increasing trend from Groups I to III but increased significantly (p<0.05) from Group II to III with positive and significant correlations with SV protein, fructose, and citric acid similar to SV weight and SC. Binders of sperm protein (BSP1, 3, and 5) genes (full length) were sequenced and established an evolutionary relationship which is lacking in buffalo.

Conclusion:

The present findings established a significant positive correlation of SC with that of other fertility parameters related to SVs weight and its secretions: Fructose, citric acid, and protein (inclusive of BSPs sequenced full length), and testosterone. Therefore, the present integrated approach along with certain semen quality attributes reflecting epididymis function could be used as a predictive fertility marker for grading and selection of breeding bulls and their progenies to develop outstanding bull mother farm.

Venous thromboembolism in cancer patients - magnitude of problem, approach, and management

Cancer is hypercoagulable state. Patients with cancer are at high risk to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE). Relative risk of developing VTE is approximately seven times higher in patients with active cancer. The incidence of occult malignancy is 7%-12% in patients with idiopathic deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, little research has been focused on cancer with thromboembolism. Lowmolecularweight heparin most frequently used pharmacologic agents as recommended by established guidelines. The aim was to evaluate the magnitude of problem in cancer patients and treatment option as per established guidelines. EMBASE, MEDLINE, and PubMed search of the literature were done to evaluate the association of DVT with various malignancy, magnitude of problem, approach, and various guidelines for the management of DVT. References of all publication were also searched to enrich this article for recent update. Thromboprophylaxis in cancer patient is gray zone area. This need lot of investigational work to find highrisk patients who would benefit from primary thromboprophylaxis.

Measurement of prompt and nonprompt charmonium suppression in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV

The nuclear modification factors of J / ψ and ψ (2S) mesons are measured in PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV . The analysis is based on PbPb and p p data samples collected by CMS at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 464 μ b - 1 and 28 pb -1 , respectively. The measurements are performed in the dimuon rapidity range of | y | < 2.4 as a function of centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum ( p T ) from p T = 3 GeV / c in the most forward region and up to 50 GeV / c . Both prompt and nonprompt (coming from b hadron decays) J / ψ mesons are observed to be increasingly suppressed with centrality, with a magnitude similar to the one observed at s NN = 2.76 TeV for the two J / ψ meson components. No dependence on rapidity is observed for either prompt or nonprompt J / ψ mesons. An indication of a lower prompt J / ψ meson suppression at p T > 25 GeV / c is seen with respect to that observed at intermediate p T . The prompt ψ (2S) meson yield is found to be more suppressed than that of the prompt J / ψ mesons in the entire p T range.

Search for Physics Beyond the Standard Model in Events with High-Momentum Higgs Bosons and Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at 13 TeV

A search for physics beyond the standard model in events with one or more high-momentum Higgs bosons, H, decaying to pairs of b quarks in association with missing transverse momentum is presented. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb^{-1}, were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at the center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13  TeV. The analysis utilizes a new b quark tagging technique based on jet substructure to identify jets from H→bb[over ¯]. Events are categorized by the multiplicity of H-tagged jets, jet mass, and the missing transverse momentum. No significant deviation from standard model expectations is observed. In the context of supersymmetry (SUSY), limits on the cross sections of pair-produced gluinos are set, assuming that gluinos decay to quark pairs, H (or Z), and the lightest SUSY particle, LSP, through an intermediate next-to-lightest SUSY particle, NLSP. With large mass splitting between the NLSP and LSP, and 100% NLSP branching fraction to H, the lower limit on the gluino mass is found to be 2010 GeV.

Measurement of b hadron lifetimes in pp collisions at s = 8 TeV

Measurements are presented of the lifetimes of theB 0 ,B s 0 , Λ b 0 , and B c + hadrons using the decay channelsB 0 → J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 ,B 0 → J / ψ K S 0 ,B s 0 → J / ψ π + π - ,B s 0 → J / ψ ϕ ( 1020 ) ,Λ b 0 → J / ψ Λ 0 , andB c + → J / ψ π + . The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7fb -1 , was collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions ats = 8 TeV . TheB 0 lifetime is measured to be 453.0 ± 1.6 (stat) ± 1.8 (syst) μ m in J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 and 457.8 ± 2.7 (stat) ± 2.8 (syst) μ m in J / ψ K S 0 , which results in a combined measurement of c τ B 0 = 454.1 ± 1.4 (stat) ± 1.7 (syst) μ m . The effective lifetime of theB s 0 meson is measured in two decay modes, with contributions from different amounts of the heavy and light eigenstates. This results in two different measured lifetimes: c τ B s 0 → J / ψ π + π - = 502.7 ± 10.2 (stat) ± 3.4 (syst) μ m and c τ B s 0 → J / ψ ϕ ( 1020 ) = 443.9 ± 2.0 (stat) ± 1.5 (syst) μ m . The Λ b 0 lifetime is found to be 442.9 ± 8.2 (stat) ± 2.8 (syst) μ m . The precision from each of these channels is as good as or better than previous measurements. The B c + lifetime, measured with respect to theB + to reduce the systematic uncertainty, is 162.3 ± 7.8 (stat) ± 4.2 (syst) ± 0.1 ( τ B + ) μ m . All results are in agreement with current world-average values.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Events with Three Charged Leptons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for a heavy neutral lepton N of Majorana nature decaying into a W boson and a charged lepton is performed using the CMS detector at the LHC. The targeted signature consists of three prompt charged leptons in any flavor combination of electrons and muons. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb^{-1}. The search is performed in the N mass range between 1 GeV and 1.2 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with the expected standard model background. Upper limits are set on the values of |V_{eN}|^{2} and |V_{μN}|^{2}, where V_{ℓN} is the matrix element describing the mixing of N with the standard model neutrino of flavor ℓ. These are the first direct limits for N masses above 500 GeV and the first limits obtained at a hadron collider for N masses below 40 GeV.

Measurement of Prompt D^{0} Meson Azimuthal Anisotropy in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

The prompt D^{0} meson azimuthal anisotropy coefficients, v_{2} and v_{3}, are measured at midrapidity (|y|<1.0) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV per nucleon pair with data collected by the CMS experiment. The measurement is performed in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) range of 1 to 40  GeV/c, for central and midcentral collisions. The v_{2} coefficient is found to be positive throughout the p_{T} range studied. The first measurement of the prompt D^{0} meson v_{3} coefficient is performed, and values up to 0.07 are observed for p_{T} around 4  GeV/c. Compared to measurements of charged particles, a similar p_{T} dependence, but smaller magnitude for p_{T}<6  GeV/c, is found for prompt D^{0} meson v_{2} and v_{3} coefficients. The results are consistent with the presence of collective motion of charm quarks at low p_{T} and a path length dependence of charm quark energy loss at high p_{T}, thereby providing new constraints on the theoretical description of the interactions between charm quarks and the quark-gluon plasma.

Search for the X(5568) State Decaying into B_{s}^{0}π^{±} in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=8 TeV

A search for resonancelike structures in the B_{s}^{0}π^{±} invariant mass spectrum is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at sqrt[s]=8  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7  fb^{-1}. The B_{s}^{0} mesons are reconstructed in the decay chain B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ, with J/ψ→μ^{+}μ^{-} and ϕ→K^{+}K^{-}. The B_{s}^{0}π^{±} invariant mass distribution shows no statistically significant peaks for different selection requirements on the reconstructed B_{s}^{0} and π^{±} candidates. Upper limits are set on the relative production rates of the X(5568) and B_{s}^{0} states times the branching fraction of the decay X(5568)^{±}→B_{s}^{0}π^{±}. In addition, upper limits are obtained as a function of the mass and the natural width of possible exotic states decaying into B_{s}^{0}π^{±}.

Search for Narrow Resonances in the b-Tagged Dijet Mass Spectrum in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=8 TeV

A search for narrow resonances decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs is presented, using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=8  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7  fb^{-1}. The search is extended to masses lower than those reached in typical searches for resonances decaying into jet pairs at the LHC, by taking advantage of triggers that identify jets originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of events is observed above the background predictions. Limits are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction to bottom quarks for spin 0, 1, and 2 resonances in the mass range of 325-1200 GeV. These results improve on the limits for resonances decaying into jet pairs in the 325-500 GeV mass range.

Transcriptional and translational abundance of Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 2, 4, 6, 7 and their receptors BMPR1A, 1B and BMPR2 in buffalo ovarian follicle and the role of BMP4 and BMP7 on estrogen production and survival of cultured granulosa cells

BMPs and their receptors modulate the granulosa cell (GC) function in the follicle of domestic animals. Since little is known on BMPs in the buffalo, the present study was aimed to investigate the expression of BMP2, 4, 6, 7 and their receptors BMPR1A, BMPR1B, BMPR2 in the GC and theca cells (TC) of ovarian follicles and the role of BMP4 and BMP7 on buffalo GC. Follicles were classified into four groups based on size and E₂ level in the follicular fluid as follows: (i) Group1(4-6 mm; <0.5 ng/mL) (ii) Group 2 (7-9 mm; 0.5-5 ng/mL) (iii) Group 3 (10-13 mm; 5-40 ng/mL) and (iv) Group 4 (dominant follicle) (>13 mm; >180 ng/mL). The results revealed that except BMP6, BMP2, 4 7 and receptors BMPR1A, BMPR1B and BMPR2 showed a minimum of 1.5-2 fold increase in mRNA expression in the GC of dominant follicle as compared to other follicle classes. In the dominant follicle, a two-fold increase in BMP4 and BMP7 expression was observed in the TC. At 100 ng/mL, the BMP4 and BMP7 either alone or in combination maximally down-regulated CASPASE3 and stimulated the transcripts of PCNA, FSHR and CYP19A1 that was supported by E₂ secretion in the granulosa cell culture suggesting their role in cell survival and E2 production. In conclusion, GC and TC of dominant follicles express BMP 2, 4, 6, 7 and their receptors BMPR1A, BMPR1B and BMPR2. BMP4 and BMP7 stimulate E₂ production and promote GC survival.

Search for new physics in events with a leptonically decaying Z boson and a large transverse momentum imbalance in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for new physics in events with a Z boson produced in association with large missing transverse momentum at the LHC is presented. The search is based on the 2016 data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS experiment ats = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . The results of this search are interpreted in terms of a simplified model of dark matter production via spin-0 or spin-1 mediators, a scenario with a standard-model-like Higgs boson produced in association with the Z boson and decaying invisibly, a model of unparticle production, and a model with large extra spatial dimensions. No significant deviations from the background expectations are found, and limits are set on relevant model parameters, significantly extending the results previously achieved in this channel.

Measurement of associated Z + charm production in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 TeV

A study of the associated production of a Z boson and a charm quark jet ( Z + c ), and a comparison to production with a b quark jet ( Z + b ), in p p collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV are presented. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7fb - 1 , collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The Z boson candidates are identified through their decays into pairs of electrons or muons. Jets originating from heavy flavour quarks are identified using semileptonic decays of c or b flavoured hadrons and hadronic decays of charm hadrons. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region with two leptons withp T ℓ > 20 GeV ,| η ℓ | < 2.1 , 71 < m ℓ ℓ < 111 GeV , and heavy flavour jets withp T jet > 25 GeV and| η jet | < 2.5 . The Z + c production cross section is measured to be σ ( p p → Z + c + X ) B ( Z → ℓ + ℓ - ) = 8.8 ± 0.5 (stat) ± 0.6 (syst) pb . The ratio of the Z + c and Z + b production cross sections is measured to be σ ( p p → Z + c + X ) / σ ( p p → Z + b + X ) = 2.0 ± 0.2 (stat) ± 0.2 (syst) . The Z + c production cross section and the cross section ratio are also measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the Z boson and of the heavy flavour jet. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the Splitting Function in pp and Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

Data from heavy ion collisions suggest that the evolution of a parton shower is modified by interactions with the color charges in the dense partonic medium created in these collisions, but it is not known where in the shower evolution the modifications occur. The momentum ratio of the two leading partons, resolved as subjets, provides information about the parton shower evolution. This substructure observable, known as the splitting function, reflects the process of a parton splitting into two other partons and has been measured for jets with transverse momentum between 140 and 500 GeV, in pp and PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair. In central PbPb collisions, the splitting function indicates a more unbalanced momentum ratio, compared to peripheral PbPb and pp collisions.. The measurements are compared to various predictions from event generators and analytical calculations.

Suppression of Excited ϒ States Relative to the Ground State in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s]_{NN}=5.02 TeV

The relative yields of ϒ mesons produced in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV and reconstructed via the dimuon decay channel are measured using data collected by the CMS experiment. Double ratios are formed by comparing the yields of the excited states, ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S), to the ground state, ϒ(1S), in both Pb-Pb and pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. The double ratios, [ϒ(nS)/ϒ(1S)]_{Pb-Pb}/[ϒ(nS)/ϒ(1S)]_{pp}, are measured to be 0.308±0.055(stat)±0.019(syst) for the ϒ(2S) and less than 0.26 at 95% confidence level for the ϒ(3S). No significant ϒ(3S) signal is found in the Pb-Pb data. The double ratios are studied as a function of collision centrality, as well as ϒ transverse momentum and rapidity. No significant dependencies are observed.

Study of dijet events with a large rapidity gap between the two leading jets in pp collisions at s = 7 TeV

Events with no charged particles produced between the two leading jets are studied in proton-proton collisions ats = 7 TeV . The jets were required to have transverse momentump T jet > 40 GeV and pseudorapidity1.5 < | η jet | < 4.7 , and to have values of η jet with opposite signs. The data used for this study were collected with the CMS detector during low-luminosity running at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 8pb - 1 . Events with no charged particles withp T > 0.2 GeV in the interval - 1 < η < 1 between the jets are observed in excess of calculations that assume no color-singlet exchange. The fraction of events with such a rapidity gap, amounting to 0.5-1% of the selected dijet sample, is measured as a function of the p T of the second-leading jet and of the rapidity separation between the jets. The data are compared to previous measurements at the Tevatron, and to perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations based on the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov evolution equations, including different models of the non-perturbative gap survival probability.

Effects of developmental lead exposure on the hippocampal methylome: Influences of sex and timing and level of exposure

Developmental lead (Pb) exposure results in persistent cognitive/behavioral impairments as well as an elevated risk for developing a variety of diseases in later life. Environmental exposures during development can result in a variety of epigenetic changes, including alterations in DNA methylation, that can influence gene expression patterns and affect the function and development of the nervous system. The present promoter-based methylation microarray profiling study explored the extent to which developmental Pb exposure may modify the methylome of a brain region, hippocampus, known to be sensitive to the effects of Pb exposure. Male and female Long Evans rats were exposed to 0 ppm, 150 ppm, 375 ppm, or 750 ppm Pb through perinatal exposures (gestation through lactation), early postnatal exposures (birth through weaning), or long-term postnatal exposures (birth through postnatal day 55). Results showed a significant contribution of sex to the hippocampal methylome and effects of Pb exposure level, with non-linear dose response effects on methylation. Surprisingly, the developmental period of exposure contributed only a small amount of variance to the overall data and gene ontology (GO) analysis revealed the largest number of overrepresented GO terms in the groups with the lowest level of exposure. The highest number of significant differentially methylated regions was found in females exposed to Pb at the lowest exposure level. Our data reinforce the significant effect that low level Pb exposure may have on gene-specific DNA methylation patterns in brain and that this occurs in a sex-dependent manner.

Observation of Correlated Azimuthal Anisotropy Fourier Harmonics in pp and p+Pb Collisions at the LHC

The azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients (v_{n}) in 8.16 TeV p+Pb data are extracted via long-range two-particle correlations as a function of the event multiplicity and compared to corresponding results in pp and PbPb collisions. Using a four-particle cumulant technique, v_{n} correlations are measured for the first time in pp and p+Pb collisions. The v_{2} and v_{4} coefficients are found to be positively correlated in all collision systems. For high-multiplicity p+Pb collisions, an anticorrelation of v_{2} and v_{3} is observed, with a similar correlation strength as in PbPb data at the same multiplicity. The new correlation results strengthen the case for a common origin of the collectivity seen in p+Pb and PbPb collisions in the measured multiplicity range.

Propensity score-matched comparison of oncological outcomes between laparoscopic and open distal pancreatic resection

BACKGROUND

Selected studies have reported improved outcomes in laparoscopic compared with open distal pancreatic resection. Concerns regarding failure to achieve proper oncological resection and compromised long-term outcomes remain. This study investigated whether postoperative outcomes and long-term survival after laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy are comparable to those after an open procedure.

METHODS

This retrospective case-control study included patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy for resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma between 2010 and 2013, identified from the National Cancer Database. Propensity score nearest-neighbour 1 : 1 matching was performed between patients undergoing laparoscopic or open distal pancreatectomy based on all relevant co-variables. The primary outcome was overall survival.

RESULTS

Of 1947 eligible patients, 605 (31·1 per cent) underwent laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. After propensity score matching, two well balanced groups of 563 patients each were analysed. There was no difference in overall survival at 3 years after laparoscopic versus open distal pancreatectomy (41·6 versus 36·0 per cent; hazard ratio 0·93, 95 per cent c.i. 0·77 to 1·12; P = 0·457). The overall conversion rate was 27·3 per cent (165 of 605). Patients who underwent laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy had outcomes comparable to those of patients who had an open procedure with regard to median time to chemotherapy (50 versus 50 days; P = 0·342), median number of nodes examined (12 versus 12; P = 0·759); 30-day mortality (1·2 versus 0·9 per cent; P = 0·562); 90-day mortality (2·8 versus 3·7 per cent; P = 0·403), 30-day readmission rate (9·6 versus 9·2 per cent; P = 0·838) and positive margin rate (14·9 versus 18·5 per cent; P = 0·110). However, median duration of hospital stay was shorter in the laparoscopic group (6 versus 7 days; P < 0·001).

CONCLUSION

Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy is an acceptable alternative to open distal pancreatectomy with no detriment to survival.

Tuberculosis and other causes of uveitis in Indonesia

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to assess the causes of uveitis in Indonesia and determine the importance of tuberculosis (TB) as a cause of uveitis.Patients and methodsProspective cohort study examining 146 consecutive new human immunodeficiency virus-negative patients with active uveitis between June 2014 and May 2015. We assessed the anatomic locations and specific causes of uveitis, as well as associations with infectious and non-infectious systemic diseases. We determined the prevalence of positive QuantiFERON Tb Gold test (QFT) results in Indonesian patients with uveitis and calculated the number of patients with active systemic TB.ResultsPosterior and panuveitis were the most common anatomic entities (38% each). Infections represented the most frequent cause of uveitis (33%); the most prevalent were toxoplasmosis (19%) and active systemic TB (8%). The majority of patients were QFT positive (61%). A specific diagnosis could not be established in 45% of the patients. At first presentation to the ophthalmologist, the majority of patients (66%) had a visual acuity of less than finger counting at 3 m and already exhibited various complications of uveitis. When classifying the QFT-positive patients with unexplained uveitis into a TB-related group, the percentage of 'TB-associated' uveitis cases increased from 8-48%. Highly elevated QFT levels were observed in patients with uveitis of unknown cause and no signs of active systemic TB.ConclusionsIn Indonesia, infectious uveitis was the most common type of uveitis and the leading causes consisted of toxoplasmosis and TB. The association observed between highly elevated QFT results and uveitis of otherwise unexplained origins indicates that a link exists between the latent TB infection and the development of uveitis.

Accident & Emergency Department's Response to Patients' Inquiries by Telephone

A prospective survey of all telephone calls for medical advice to the Accident & Emergency Department of Leicester Royal Infirmary was undertaken. The objectives of the study were to quantitate the frequency and circumstances related to these inquiries. Over the study period of 10 days, details of 154 telephone calls were recorded. The results demonstrated the perception of the general public, that the A & E department was the most logical place to contact. Only 30% (46) attempted to seek advice from their general practitioner prior to calling the department.

Measurements of the p p → Z Z production cross section and the Z → 4 ℓ branching fraction, and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at s = 13 TeV

Four-lepton production in proton-proton collisions, p p → ( Z / γ ∗ ) ( Z / γ ∗ ) → 4 ℓ , where ℓ = e or μ , is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . The ZZ production cross section, σ ( p p → Z Z ) = 17.2 ± 0.5 (stat) ± 0.7 (syst) ± 0.4 (theo) ± 0.4 (lumi) pb , measured using events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region 60 < m ℓ + ℓ - < 120 GeV , is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are measured and are well described by the theoretical predictions. The Z boson branching fraction to four leptons is measured to be B ( Z → 4 ℓ ) = 4 . 83 - 0.22 + 0.23 ( s t a t ) - 0.29 + 0.32 ( s y s t ) ± 0.08 ( t h e o ) ± 0.12 ( l u m i ) × 10 - 6 for events with a four-lepton invariant mass in the range 80 < m 4 ℓ < 100 GeV and a dilepton massm ℓ ℓ > 4 GeV for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results agree with standard model predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ γ couplings at 95% confidence level: - 0.0012 < f 4 Z < 0.0010 , - 0.0010 < f 5 Z < 0.0013 , - 0.0012 < f 4 γ < 0.0013 , - 0.0012 < f 5 γ < 0.0013 .

The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ γ couplings at 95% confidence level: - 0.0012 < f 4 Z < 0.0010 , - 0.0010 < f 5 Z < 0.0013 , - 0.0012 < f 4 γ < 0.0013 , - 0.0012 < f 5 γ < 0.0013 .

Second primary malignancy: A retrospective analysis report from a tertiary cancer center of North India

AIM OF STUDY

We analyzed the data of second primary malignancy (SPM) from one of the tertiary cancer centers of North India, and the basic aim was to retrieve incidence, prognosis, and outcomes.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Radiation Oncology in a tertiary cancer center between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2015. A total of 6000 cases of cancer were analyzed, out of which cases who presented with histological proven synchronous SPM were included in this study.

RESULTS

The present study showed three cases (8.1%) of SPM who are attributed to field carcinogenesis. There were five cases in which metachronous malignancy develops in the previous radiation therapy field. There is 26% of synchronous malignancy as compared to 74% of metachronous malignancy. In the present study, most diagnosed synchronous malignancies were carcinoma breast, while in metachronous malignancies, carcinoma breast and gynecological cancers were most common.

CONCLUSIONS

SPMs are not very rare. Hence, pretreatment and follow-up evaluation should be meticulous to rule out SPMs.
