Abstract
High performance anion exchange chromatography on pellicular ion exchange resins under high pH conditions with detection of sugars using a pulsed amperometric detector has been developed as a method for the separation and analysis of reduced oligosaccharides liberated from mucins by alkaline borohydride treatment. Ovine, bovine and porcine submaxillary mucins were used as models to develop the method. Although neutral reduced di-to tetraoligosaccharides were poorly retained on the column, a variety of sialylated reduced oligosaccharides could be separated efficiently. Treatment of the samples with sialidase and rechromatography identified the sialylated compounds in the elution profile. A striking finding was the greatly delayed elution times given by N-glycolylneuraminic acid containing compounds in comparison with the corresponding N-acetylneuraminic acid containing analogues. The elution profiles for the product from the mucins closely corresponded to those expected for the major oligosaccharides from these mucins. The procedures described will be useful for analysing sialomucins on a microscale without resorting to radiolabelling procedures.

Abstract
In one case of human malaria imported from Gabon, abnormal forms of Plasmodium vivax are described; severe multiple infections of the host erythrocytes are noticed (up to 6 amoeboid trophozoites in a single red blood cell). Attention is drawn to the numerous morphologically abnormal intra-erythrocytic stages of P. vivax: severe multiple infections of red cells, parasites "ressembling" P. ovale, mature schizonts of small size, with reduced number of merozoites... The geographical distribution of P. vivax in Central Africa is discussed, with reflections on the factors allowing the importation of few P. vivax cases from this area.

Abstract
An overview is presented of a number of astrometry and astrophysics programs based on radio sources from the Parkes 2.7 GHz catalogues. The programs cover the optical identification and spectroscopy of flat-spectrum Parkes sources and the determination of their milliarc-second radio structures and positions. Work is also in progress to tie together the radio and Hipparcos positional reference frames. A parallel program of radio and optical astrometry of southern radio stars is also under way.

Abstract
Evidence is accumulating that colonic mucin glycoconjugates are altered in ulcerative colitis. In order to investigate this further, the lectin-binding properties of rectal glycoconjugates have been studied in ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and controls using lectin-peroxidase histochemistry. Ten lectins were used including peanut agglutinin (PNA) which is known to bind to malignant and adenomatous but not normal colonic mucins. Eight of 21 ulcerative colitis rectal biopsies and 10 of 17 Crohn's disease rectal biopsies showed PNA positivity, particularly in the supranuclear region of surface epithelial cells. There was no correlation between PNA positivity and duration of disease or inflammation, and none of the biopsies showed evidence of dysplasia. This abnormality in epithelial cell glycoconjugates seems to be commonly present in nondysplastic mucosa and occurs in both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. It may reflect a fundamental abnormality in mucus glycoprotein synthesis in inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
Evidence is accumulating that there are changes in the expression of antigens on biliary epithelium in early primary biliary cirrhosis and graft rejection. If any of the biliary diseases including rejection are associated with specific alterations in biliary glycoprotein structure, lectin histochemistry could be useful for detecting these abnormalities. Lectin histochemistry, using a panel of five lectins with differing carbohydrate specificities, was therefore performed on liver biopsies from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, sclerosing cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma, liver transplantation, extrahepatic biliary obstruction and normal liver. Reproducible high-quality lectin histochemistry was obtained on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue. In normal liver wheat germ agglutinin selectively bound to Kupffer cells, Griffonia simplicifolia II bound to hepatocytes, peanut agglutinin (PNA) bound to portal tract macrophages and liver capsule, and Ulex europaeus I (UEA I) bound to endothelium. Bile ducts were variably bound by all these lectins and soy bean agglutinin. In all the cholestatic biopsies PNA identified 'activated' Kupffer cells but there was no alteration in lectin binding specific to any of the benign conditions studied. Cholangiocarcinoma cells bound PNA and UEA I, so UEA I binding should not be regarded as specific for tumours of endothelial origin.

Abstract
Lectin peroxidase histochemical analysis was carried out on pancreatic tissue from patients with pancreatic carcinoma and chronic pancreatitis and from subjects with normal pancreas to find a tumour specific pattern of lectin binding that would aid histological and cytological diagnosis. There were striking differences between the lectin binding characteristics of the different cell types in the normal pancreas. Acinar cells were uniformly positive for binding with wheat germ agglutinin and soy bean agglutinin while islet cells were usually negative for these lectins. Ulex europaeus I lectin however, was found not to be specific for endothelium, showing positivity also for acinar and ductal tissue. Griffonia simplicifolia II lectin was found to be highly specific for ductal epithelium, and because of this was tested in a hamster pancreatic cancer model where it was not specific for ductal epithelium, reflecting differing carbohydrate expression in the hamster pancreas. Pancreatic carcinomas and chronic pancreatitis bound all five lectins without any qualitative distinction from each other or from normal pancreatic tissue, but there was increased intensity of peanut agglutinin binding to secreted mucins in pancreatic carcinoma, which may be of potential use in radiolabelled lectin scanning.

Abstract
Sexual maturation and fertility were assessed in fourteen cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) females under various social conditions. Six tamarin females (20-28 mo of age) showed a suppression of fertility while living with their families. Hormonal profiles demonstrated low, acyclic levels of urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) and estrone-conjugates (E1C). A rapid onset of ovarian and pituitary cyclicity occurred when four of the six females were removed from their families and paired with an unrelated male. In one female, an ovulatory LH peak occurred as early as eight days after pairing and resulted in conception and full-term pregnancy. Two of the six females were housed in total isolation for 30 days following their removal from the family and prior to pairing. Gradual increases in hormone concentrations occurred during isolation; however, there was no ovarian cyclicity until each female was paired with an unrelated male. In all six females, conception occurred before or as a result of the third ovulatory cycle. Partial isolation of a 36-mo-old female resulted in elevated LH and E1C levels, but cyclicity was not observed until the female was paired with an unrelated male. These findings indicate that removal of a female from the family alone does not initiate ovarian cycling. Sexual maturation, or puberty, occurs in female tamarins living with their families between 15 and 17 mo of age when mean LH and E1C levels began to increase. However, when a female is removed and paired at 9 mo of age with an unrelated male, elevated levels of LH and E1C may be seen by 10 and 11 mo of age. Our findings indicate that a suppression of fertility occurs in cotton-top tamarins living with their families, but that reproductive suppression does not affect the process of sexual maturation. Both removal from the family environment and stimulation by an unrelated male tamarin were necessary to induce normal reproductive activity. An acceleration of puberty occurred when a female tamarin was removed from her family early in development and paired with a male.

Abstract
Old World monkeys and apes have been reported to differ from New World monkeys in their abilities to discriminate colors across the visible spectrum. Old World monkeys and apes (Macaca, Pan, Pongo) discriminate colors quite accurately, while some New World monkeys studied (Saimiri, Cebus) have shown lower sensitivity to and poorer discrimination of long wavelength light. This study examined the color discrimination ability of another New World primate, the cotton-top tamarin, Saguinus oedipus oedipus (family Callitrichidae). The tamarins were trained to discriminate a set of Munsell color chips, both within the same hue category and from the 2 hue categories on either side of the training hue. Results indicated that the cotton-top tamarin can make accurate discriminations across the visible spectrum. Human subjects were tested under similar conditions in order to compare their color discrimination abilities to those of the tamarins. The tamarins and human subjects had the most difficulty discriminating the same hues. The discrimination abilities of the monkeys were assessed in relation to the coloration of fruits eaten in a natural environment. A list of the species of fruits commonly eaten by various species of New World monkeys was compiled and the coloration of fruits at maturity was noted. It was found that most New World primate species eat fruits whose mature coloration ranges across most of the spectrum.

Abstract
A technique for lectin-peroxidase histochemistry was adapted for the study of formalin fixed paraffin embedded colonic tissue. Ten lectins with differing carbohydrate binding specificity were tested against 20 normal rectal biopsy specimens and tissue from 19 colonic carcinomata, 19 tubular or tubulovillous adenomata, and 19 hyperplastic polyps. None of the normal rectal biopsy specimens bound the lectins peanut agglutinin (PNA), Griffonia simplicifolia II (GSII), and Ulex europaeus I (UEAI), whereas 18 carcinomata, 12 adenomata, and 18 hyperplastic polyps showed affinity for one or more of these lectins. Hyperplastic colonic polyps are shown to possess similar abnormalities in glycoprotein structure to malignant and adenomatous colonic tissue. This may simply indicate a non-specific reaction to changed rates of cell proliferation but might represent a more fundamental association between hyperplastic polyps and adenocarcinomas.

Abstract
During a one year period, seven rejected cotton-top tamarin infants were hand-reared. A hand-rearing program was developed which included the use of heated surrogates, a non-human primate infant formula, special nipples, and a systematic reintroduction into a family group. This regimen was quite successful. The hand-rearing process yielded a success rate of 75.0%, while the reintroduction process had a success rate of 80.0% for reintroduction into a family group and 100.0% survival rate.
