Abstract
Increased midsole deformation can limit exposure to high impact and vibration magnitudes while running. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of shoes eliciting different midsole deformation on ground reaction forces, heel impact, soft tissue vibrations and bone vibrations. Forty-eight runners performed a 5-min running task on an instrumented treadmill at a self-selected pace with four different shoes. Midsole horizontal and vertical deformations were quantified with relative displacement of seven reflective markers placed on the midsole of the shoe and tracked by eight optoelectronic cameras. Heel impacts, soft tissue and bone vibrations of lower leg muscle groups, sacrum and head were quantified with tri-axial accelerometers. Continuous wavelet transform was used to assess magnitude and frequency of the acceleration data. Linear mixed models and non-parametric one-dimensional regressions between the accelerometer data and shoe deformation were performed. Greater horizontal and vertical deformations decreased the magnitude (up to 4.6% per mm) and frequency (up to 0.6 Hz per mm) of soft tissue vibrations and bone accelerations. Accelerations of the heel, tibia, gastrocnemius medialis and vastus lateralis were more influenced than the sacrum and head. Increasing midsole deformation could therefore mitigate the risk of injury, while increasing running comfort and smoothness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine prevalence of novel newborn types among 541 285 live births in 23 countries from 2000 to 2021. DESIGN Descriptive multi-country secondary data analysis. SETTING Subnational, population-based birth cohort studies (n = 45) in 23 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) spanning 2000-2021. POPULATION Liveborn infants. METHODS Subnational, population-based studies with high-quality birth outcome data from LMICs were invited to join the Vulnerable Newborn Measurement Collaboration. We defined distinct newborn types using gestational age (preterm [PT], term [T]), birthweight for gestational age using INTERGROWTH-21st standards (small for gestational age [SGA], appropriate for gestational age [AGA] or large for gestational age [LGA]), and birthweight (low birthweight, LBW [<2500 g], nonLBW) as ten types (using all three outcomes), six types (by excluding the birthweight categorisation), and four types (by collapsing the AGA and LGA categories). We defined small types as those with at least one classification of LBW, PT or SGA. We presented study characteristics, participant characteristics, data missingness, and prevalence of newborn types by region and study. RESULTS Among 541 285 live births, 476 939 (88.1%) had non-missing and plausible values for gestational age, birthweight and sex required to construct the newborn types. The median prevalences of ten types across studies were T+AGA+nonLBW (58.0%), T+LGA+nonLBW (3.3%), T+AGA+LBW (0.5%), T+SGA+nonLBW (14.2%), T+SGA+LBW (7.1%), PT+LGA+nonLBW (1.6%), PT+LGA+LBW (0.2%), PT+AGA+nonLBW (3.7%), PT+AGA+LBW (3.6%) and PT+SGA+LBW (1.0%). The median prevalence of small types (six types, 37.6%) varied across studies and within regions and was higher in Southern Asia (52.4%) than in Sub-Saharan Africa (34.9%). CONCLUSIONS Further investigation is needed to describe the mortality risks associated with newborn types and understand the implications of this framework for local targeting of interventions to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes in LMICs.

Abstract
Background Cervical pregnancy, an uncommon type of ectopic pregnancy, can lead to devastating consequences if not diagnosed and treated early. Despite this, there are no specific guidelines on how to treat such pregnancies especially in advanced gestational ages (GAs). Case This is a 35-year-old patient who presented to our hospital at 13 weeks GA after failing systemic multidose methotrexate therapy for a cervical ectopic pregnancy. Given desire to preserve fertility, a minimally invasive conservative approach was taken involving potassium chloride (KCl) and methotrexate injections into the gestational sac, followed by immediate Cook intracervical double balloon placement under direct ultrasound visualization, with removal of the balloon after 72 hours, and ultimately resolution of the pregnancy 12 weeks after the removal. Conclusion Advanced first trimester cervical ectopic pregnancy after failure of methotrexate therapy was managed successfully with minimally invasive KCl and methotrexate injections in combination with cervical ripening balloon.

Abstract
Myelin is a multilayered membrane that tightly wraps neuronal axons, enabling efficient, high-speed signal propagation. The axon and myelin sheath form tight contacts, mediated by specific plasma membrane proteins and lipids, and disruption of these contacts causes devastating demyelinating diseases. Using two cell-based models of demyelinating sphingolipidoses, we demonstrate that altered lipid metabolism changes the abundance of specific plasma membrane proteins. These altered membrane proteins have known roles in cell adhesion and signaling, with several implicated in neurological diseases. The cell surface abundance of the adhesion molecule neurofascin (NFASC), a protein critical for the maintenance of myelin-axon contacts, changes following disruption to sphingolipid metabolism. This provides a direct molecular link between altered lipid abundance and myelin stability. We show that the NFASC isoform NF155, but not NF186, interacts directly and specifically with the sphingolipid sulfatide via multiple binding sites and that this interaction requires the full-length extracellular domain of NF155. We demonstrate that NF155 adopts an S-shaped conformation and preferentially binds sulfatide-containing membranes in cis, with important implications for protein arrangement in the tight axon-myelin space. Our work links glycosphingolipid imbalances to disturbance of membrane protein abundance and demonstrates how this may be driven by direct protein-lipid interactions, providing a mechanistic framework to understand the pathogenesis of galactosphingolipidoses.

Abstract
After a stroke, physical activity can be key in enhancing the rehabilitation of patients and preventing a secondary stroke. In this commentary, we critically appraise a systematic review which investigated how different types of physical fitness training impact on the mental and physical conditions of stroke survivors. Cardiorespiratory, resistance and mixed training (especially when including walking) can improve key outcomes such as the balance and mobility of stroke survivors, but the most suitable type of training depends on the individual needs and aims of the rehabilitation process. More research is needed to understand how the effects of the different types of training vary by considering the time between stroke and intervention onset, stroke severity, and the dose of intervention.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction A unilateral or bilateral pars interarticularis defect (spondylolysis) is a leading cause of axial back pain in adolescent athletes. Currently, a spectrum of imaging modalities is used for assessment of pars interarticularis defects.
Objectives The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy of chemical shift sequence (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) technique to conventional MRI sequences in the detection of pars defects.
Patients and Methods Conventional T1, T2, and short tau inversion recovery sagittal and axial, as well as “in-” and “out-” phase chemical shift sagittal MRI sequences of 70 consecutive patients referred for low back pain were reviewed. Demographic details, clinical indication, and presence/diagnosis of pars defects using a 5-point Likert scale on both conventional and chemical shift MRI sequences. Spearman's correlation was used for statistical analysis. Intraclass correlation coefficient analysis was evaluated to assess the intraclass reliability between observers. Data were analyzed using DATAtab web-based statistics software (2022).
Results A total of 70 patients with an average age of 54.34 years with a female predominance were included. There were 11 pars defects in the cohort. Both in and out phases of chemical shift imaging were able to identify pars defect and intact pars. However, out phase was relatively better in delineating pars defects, while the in phase was superior in identifying an intact pars, though this was not statistically significant. There was good intra- and interobserver reliabilities.
Conclusion Chemical shift MRI sequence is a quicker, complementary technique to assess and analyze pars interarticularis confidently than conventionally utilized MRI sequences in patients being evaluated for axial back pain.

Abstract
Microengineering technologies provide bespoke tools for single-cell studies, including microarray approaches. There are many challenges when culturing adherent single cells in confined geometries for extended periods, including the ability of migratory cells to overcome confining cell-repellent surfaces with time. Following studies suggesting clonal expansion of only a few vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) contributes to plaque formation, the investigation of vSMCs at the single-cell level is central to furthering our understanding of atherosclerosis. Herein, we present a medium throughput cellular microarray, for the tracking of single, freshly-isolated vSMCs as they undergo phenotypic modulation in vitro. Our solution facilitates long-term cell confinement (> 3 weeks) utilising novel application of surface functionalisation methods to define individual culture microwells. We demonstrate successful tracking of hundreds of native vSMCs isolated from rat aortic and carotid artery tissue, monitoring their proliferative capacity and uptake of oxidised low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) by live-cell microscopy. After 7 days in vitro, the majority of viable SMCs remained as single non-proliferating cells (51% aorta, 78% carotid). However, a sub-population of vSMCs demonstrated high proliferative capacity (≥ 10 progeny; 18% aorta, 5% carotid), in line with reports that a limited number of medial SMCs selectively expand to populate atherosclerotic lesions. Furthermore, we show that, when exposed to oxLDL, proliferative cells uptake higher levels of lipoproteins, whilst also expressing greater levels of galectin-3. Our microwell array approach enables long-term characterisation of multiple phenotypic characteristics and the identification of new cellular sub-populations in migratory, proliferative adherent cell types.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the prognostic utility of different parameters routinely assessed from cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and exercise echocardiography in adults with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Forty-two ESRD (37 male) individuals (age: 58 ± 13 years, height: 169.30 ± 8.30 cm, weight: 81 ± 15 kg, body surface area: 1.92 ± 0.20 m2) underwent a maximal/symptom limited CPET, with a full cross-sectional echocardiogram performed at baseline and peak exercise. All participants were prospectively followed over a 10-year period, with all-cause mortality as the primary endpoint. After the follow-up period, a total of 19 participants (45%) died. Left atrial size (4.70 ± 0.70 vs. 3.65 ± 0.50 cm, P < 0.001) and anteroseptal wall thickness (1.28 ± 0.40 vs. 1.06 ± 0.02 cm, P = 0.002) were significantly greater in those that died, while peak heart rate was significantly lower (108 ± 12 vs. 128 ± 14 bpm, P < 0.001). The prevalence of myocardial ischaemia (13 vs. 8 participants, P = 0.03) was significantly greater, while peak VO2 (9.80 ± 2.10 vs. 15.90 ± 4.30 ml·kg-1·min-1, P < 0.001) was significantly lower in those that died. Following multivariate cox regression, myocardial ischaemia (Hazard Ratio 3.08; 95% Confidence Interval 1.09-8.70; P = 0.03) and peak VO2 (HR 0.73; 95% CI 0.64-0.84; P < 0.001) were significant independent predictors of 10-year all-cause mortality. This is the first study to establish peak VO2 as powerful marker of all-cause mortality when assessed with clinical, resting and stress echocardiography parameters in people with ESRD over a 10-year follow up period. This observation indicates that, in clinical practice, CPET and exercise echocardiography may serve as valuable tools for the risk stratification of individuals with ESRD. HIGHLIGHTSWe aimed to assess the prognostic utility of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and exercise echocardiography in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with 10-year mortality.Peak aerobic capacity and the presence of ischaemic heart disease were independently associated with all-cause mortality.This observation indicates that, in clinical practice, CPET and exercise echocardiography may serve as valuable tools for the risk stratification of individuals with end-stage renal disease.

Abstract
We describe a workflow for efficient, environmentally attentive, and sustainable practices related to routine agarose gel electrophoresis. The methods reduce plastic waste and improve efficiency, especially for the exhaustive screening of difficult-to-obtain plasmids. Sustainability is increased when agarose is used ten times over by virtue of a thorough recycling regimen. The workflow optimizes workspaces and standardizes lab practices for handling potentially hazardous waste, minimizing environmental harm. Safety, efficiency, and sustainability improve laboratory productivity, help minimize environmental contamination, and increase cost-effectiveness.

Abstract
The objective of this systematic review was to compare the efficacy of antibiotic and non-antibiotic alternatives in the prevention and treatment of necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens. In vivo experimental and observational studies that compared the administration of non-antibiotic compounds with antibiotics to prevent or treat NE in broiler chickens and that evaluated mortality and/or clinical or subclinical NE outcome measures were eligible. Four electronic databases were searched in December 2019 and updated in October 2021. Retrieved studies were evaluated in two phases: abstract and design screening. Data were then extracted from included studies. Risk of bias was assessed by outcome following the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. A meta-analysis was not conducted due to heterogeneity across interventions and outcomes. The non-antibiotic and antibiotic groups were compared at the outcome level for individual studies using the mean difference and 95% confidence interval (CI) calculated post hoc from raw data. In total, 1282 studies were originally identified, and 40 were included in the final review. The overall risk of bias for the 89 outcomes was either "high" (n = 34) or "some concerns" (n = 55). Individual study comparisons showed a beneficial trend toward the antibiotic group for reduced mortality, NE lesion scores (overall, jejunum, and ileum), Clostridium perfringens counts, and for most histologic measurements (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum villi height, and jejunum and ileum crypt depth). The non-antibiotic groups showed a beneficial trend for NE duodenum lesion scores and duodenum crypt depth measurements. Based on this review, there is a trend that mostly favors antibiotic compounds in preventing and/or treating NE, but the evidence also suggests no difference when comparing them with non-antibiotic alternatives. Studies assessing this research question were heterogeneous in their intervention conditions and outcomes measured, and there were key aspects of the experimental design not reported in some of the studies.

Abstract
Background Sub-Saharan Africa experiences a disproportionate amount of pediatric surgical disease, with 80% of children lacking access to timely, affordable, and safe surgical care. This study aims to characterize the burden of disease and outcomes of pediatric surgical conditions at Connaught Hospital, the main pediatric referral hospital in Sierra Leone. Methods This retrospective and hospital-based study included children up to 15 years old who were operated on between 2015 and June 2016 at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to characterize the distribution of disease and compare all variables against age category and mortality. Findings A total of 215 patients were included in this study of which 72.5% (n=132) were male and 27.5% (n=50) were female. Most of the patients were diagnosed with congenital anomalies (60.9%; n=131). However, infection was the leading diagnosis (60.5%; n=23) among patients aged 5-10 years (n=38). Inguinal hernia was the leading condition (65.0%; n=85) among patients presenting with a congenital anomaly. The condition with the highest mortality was infections (17.0%; n=8), followed by other conditions (9.1%; n=2) and congenital anomalies (3.1%; n=4). Based on the results of this study, over 7000 children with inguinal hernias remain untreated annually in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Conclusion This study quantifies the burden of surgical disease among children, a foundational step toward the prioritization of pediatric surgical care in national health agendas, the development of evidence-based interventions, and the strategic allocation of resources in Sierra Leone.

Abstract
AIMS The UK Proton Overseas Programme (POP) was launched in 2008. The Proton Clinical Outcomes Unit (PCOU) warehouses a centralised registry for collection, curation and analysis of all outcomes data for all National Health Service-funded UK patients referred and treated abroad with proton beam therapy (PBT) via the POP. Outcomes are reported and analysed here for patients diagnosed with non-central nervous system tumours treated from 2008 to September 2020 via the POP. MATERIALS AND METHODS All non-central nervous system tumour files for treatments as of 30 September 2020 were interrogated for follow-up information, and type (following CTCAE v4) and time of onset of any late (>90 days post-PBT completion) grade 3-5 toxicities. RESULTS Four hundred and ninety-five patients were analysed. The median follow-up was 2.1 years (0-9.3 years). The median age was 11 years (0-69 years). 70.3% of patients were paediatric (<16 years). Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) and Ewing sarcoma were the most common diagnoses (42.6% and 34.1%). 51.3% of treated patients were for head and neck (H&N) tumours. At last known follow-up, 86.1% of all patients were alive, with a 2-year survival rate of 88.3% and 2-year local control of 90.3%. Mortality and local control were worse for adults (≥25 years) than for the younger groups. The grade 3 toxicity rate was 12.6%, with a median onset of 2.3 years. Most were in the H&N region in paediatric patients with RMS. Cataracts (30.5%) were the most common, then musculoskeletal deformity (10.1%) and premature menopause (10.1%). Three paediatric patients (1-3 years at treatment) experienced secondary malignancy. Seven grade 4 toxicities occurred (1.6%), all in the H&N region and most in paediatric patients with RMS. Six related to eyes (cataracts, retinopathy, scleral disorder) or ears (hearing impairment). CONCLUSIONS This study is the largest to date for RMS and Ewing sarcoma, undergoing multimodality therapy including PBT. It demonstrates good local control, survival and acceptable toxicity rates.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale has been associated with respiratory disease in poultry, particularly turkeys, leading to significant economic losses. However, O. rhinotracheale is poorly studied, and a very limited number of complete genomes are available. Here, we report the complete genome sequences of three O. rhinotracheale strains, generated using a Nanopore-Illumina hybrid assembly approach.

Abstract
AIMS In 2008, the UK National Health Service started the Proton Overseas Programme (POP), to provide access for proton beam therapy (PBT) abroad for selected tumour diagnoses while two national centres were being planned. The clinical outcomes for the patient group treated for central nervous system (CNS), base of skull, spinal and paraspinal malignancies are reported here. MATERIALS AND METHODS Since the start of the POP, an agreement between the National Health Service and UK referring centres ensured outcomes data collection, including overall survival, local tumour control and late toxicity data. Clinical and treatment-related data were extracted from this national patient database. Grade ≥3 late toxicities were reported following Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) v 4.0 definition, occurring later than 90 days since the completion of treatment. RESULTS Between 2008 and September 2020, 830 patients were treated within the POP for the above listed malignancies. Overall survival data were available for 815 patients and local control data for 726 patients. Toxicity analysis was carried out on 702 patients, with patients excluded due to short follow-up (<90 days) and/or inadequate toxicity data available. After a median follow-up of 3.34 years (0.06-11.58), the overall survival was 91.2%. The local control rate was 85.9% after a median follow-up of 2.81 years (range 0.04-11.58). The overall grade ≥3 late toxicity incidence was 11.97%, after a median follow-up of 1.72 years (0.04-8.45). The median radiotherapy prescription dose was 54 GyRBE (34.8-79.2). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicate the safety of PBT for CNS tumours. Preliminary clinical outcomes following PBT for paediatric/teen and young adult and adult CNS tumours treated within the POP are encouraging, which reflects accurate patient selection and treatment quality. The rate of late effects compares favourably with published cohorts. Clinical outcomes from this patient cohort will be compared with those of UK-treated patients since the start of the national PBT service in 2018.

Abstract
The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×10^{20} protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q^{2} (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV≤E_{ν}<6 GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs Q^{2}.

Abstract
Cerebral aneurysm (CA) rupture is one of the major causes of hemorrhagic stroke. During endovascular therapy (ET), neurointerventionalists rely on qualitative image sequences and do not have access to crucial quantitative hemodynamic information. Quantifying angiographic image sequences can provide vital information, but it is not possible to perform this in a controlled manner in vivo. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a valuable tool capable of providing high fidelity quantitative data by replicating the blood flow physics within the cerebrovasculature. In this work, we use simulated angiograms (SA) to quantify the hemodynamic interaction with a clinically utilized contrast agent. SA enables extraction of time density curves (TDC) within the desired region of interest to analyze hemodynamic parameters such as time to peak (TTP) and mean transit time (MTT) within the aneurysm. We present on the quantification of several hemodynamic parameters of interest for multiple, clinically-relevant scenarios such as variable contrast injection duration and bolus volumes for 7 patient-specific CA geometries. Results indicate that utilizing these analyses provides valuable hemodynamic information relating vascular and aneurysm morphology, contrast flow conditions and injection variability. The injected contrast circulates for multiple cardiac cycles within the aneurysmal region, especially for larger aneurysms and tortuous vasculature. The SA approach enables determination of angiographic parameters for each scenario. Together, these have the potential to overcome the existing barriers in quantifying angiographic procedures in vitro or in vivo, and can provide clinically valuable hemodynamic insights for CA treatment.

Abstract
Background Childhood neurosurgical conditions such as hydrocephalus and spina bifida represent a significant burden of death and disability worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries. However, there are limited data on the disease prevalence and delays in care for pediatric neurosurgical conditions in very low-resource settings. This study aims to characterize the delays in access to care for pediatric neurosurgical conditions in Somaliland. Methods We performed a retrospective review of all children with congenital hydrocephalus and spina bifida admitted to the Edna University Hospital (EAUH) in Somaliland between 2011 and 2018. Patient demographics were analyzed with descriptive statistics and χ2 test statistics. We defined delays in care for each condition based on standard care in high-income settings. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed to evaluate predictors of delay in care. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results A total of 344 children were admitted to EAUH with neurosurgical conditions from 2011 to 2018. The most common condition was congenital hydrocephalus (62%). Delays in care were found for 90% of patients and were associated with the type of diagnosis and region. The longest delay among children with spina bifida was 60 months, while the longest delay for children with congenital hydrocephalus was 36 months. Children with congenital hydrocephalus or spina bifida traveling from foreign countries had the highest waiting time to receive care, with a median delay of 8 months (IQR: 5-11 months) and 4 months (IQR: 3-7 months), respectively. Conclusion We found significant delays in care for children with neurosurgical conditions in Somaliland. This country has an urgent need to scale up its surgical infrastructure, workforce, and referral pathways to address the needs of children with hydrocephalus and spina bifida.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has had serious negative health and economic impacts in sub-Saharan Africa. Continuous monitoring of these impacts is crucial to formulate interventions to minimize the consequences of COVID-19. This study surveyed 2,829 adults in urban and rural sites among five sub-Saharan African countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ghana. Participants completed a mobile phone survey that assessed self-reported sociodemographics, COVID-19 preventive practices, psychological distress, and barriers to healthcare access. A modified Poisson regression model was used to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% CIs to investigate potential factors related to psychological distress and barriers to reduced healthcare access. At least 15.6% of adults reported experiencing any psychological distress in the previous 2 weeks, and 10.5% reported that at least one essential healthcare service was difficult to access 2 years into the pandemic. The majority of participants reported using several COVID-19 preventive methods, with varying proportions across the sites. Participants in the urban site of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (aPR: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.74-3.03) and in the rural site of Kintampo, Ghana (aPR: 1.68; 95% CI: 1.21-2.34) had a higher likelihood of experiencing any psychological distress compared with those in the rural area of Nouna, Burkina Faso. Loss of employment due to COVID-19 (aPR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.47-2.11) was also associated with an increased prevalence of psychological distress. The number of children under 5 years in the household (aPR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.14-1.33) and participant self-reported psychological distress (aPR: 1.83; 95% CI: 1.48-2.27) were associated with an increased prevalence of reporting barriers to accessing health services, whereas wage employment (aPR: 0.67; 95% CI: 0.49-0.90) was associated with decreased prevalence of reporting barriers to accessing health services. Overall, we found a high prevalence of psychological distress and interruptions in access to healthcare services 2 years into the pandemic across five sub-Saharan African countries. Increased effort and attention should be given to addressing the negative impacts of COVID-19 on psychological distress. An equitable and collaborative approach to new and existing preventive measures for COVID-19 is crucial to limit the consequences of COVID-19 on the health of adults in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract
With the number of older adults increasing rapidly, researchers have increasingly focused on designing interventions to improve health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in older adulthood. However, many interventions struggle with adherence because older adults often perceive them as unenjoyable, condescending, or painful. Here, we report results from a clinical trial of Bingocize®, a community-based “in vivo” exercise and health education intervention for older adults, to determine if participation impacts participants’ HRQOL. One-hundred and forty-three older adults ages 60+ were randomly assigned to one of four conditions that contrasted exercise and health education to non-intervention control groups. All conditions were matched on social engagement and met in group sessions twice weekly for 12 weeks. The CDC HRQOL measure was administered before and after the intervention. Session adherence was >90% across all sessions. Results from 2 (Time: Pre/Post) x 4 (Condition: Bingo-only Control vs. Bingo+Health Education vs. Bingo+Exercise vs. Bingo+Health Education+Exercise) ANOVAs found that all participants reported better sleep quality, reduced pain, and increased energy after completing the program (p-values <.05). Results from 2 (Time: Pre/Post) x 2 (Exercise/No Exercise) ANOVAs revealed interactions showing that exercise participants experienced greater decreases in days with anxiety and physically unhealthy days as compared to non-exercise participants (p-values <.05). These findings suggest that elements of Bingocize can contribute to improvements in older adults’ mental and physical quality of life. The current research can help researchers and professionals further elucidate which intervention mechanisms play a role in determining older adults’ health-related quality of life.
