miR-141-3p protects against blood-brain barrier disruption and brain injury after intracerebral hemorrhage by targeting ZEB2. J Clin Neurosci 2022; 99:253-260. [PMID: 35306455 DOI: 10.1016/j.jocn.2022.03.010] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/11/2021] [Revised: 02/28/2022] [Accepted: 03/05/2022] [Indexed: 12/31/2022]
Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) participate in the diagnosis and treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). miR-141-3p has been widely reported to regulate neurological disorders and cerebropathy. However, the specific role of miR-141-3p in ICH has not yet been revealed. The aim of this study was exploration of the biological functions and mechanism of miR-141-3p in ICH by establishing a collagenase-induced ICH mouse model. After ICH induction, miR-141-3p mimics or miR-NC were administered into the right striatum of the model mice followed by the performance of neurological tests. After euthanasia of the mice, the injury volume, brain water content, and injury to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) were evaluated. Evans blue (EB) was used to stain the brain slices, and EB extravasation was detected to evaluate the injury to BBB. miR-141-3p expression in perihematomal edema and hematoma areas after ICH was assessed by RT-qPCR. The levels of tight junction proteins in brain tissues and human brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) were evaluated by western blotting. The FITC-dextran 20 method was used to assess BMEC permeability. The binding between miR-141-3p and zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 2 (ZEB2) was verified with a luciferase reporter assay. In this study, miR-141-3p overexpression alleviated ICH-induced brain injury and protected BBB integrity in vivo. ZEB2 was a target gene of miR-141-3p. ZEB2 overexpression promoted BBB disruption, and miR-141-3p overexpression attenuated the promoting effect exerted by ZEB2. Overall, miR-141-3p protects against BBB disruption and attenuates brain injuries induced by ICH by targeting ZEB2.

Abstract
A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT Collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of ^{235}U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the ^{235}U spectral shape to about 3%. The ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Distinctive carbon repression effects in the carbohydrate-selective wood decay fungus Rhodonia placenta. Fungal Genet Biol 2022; 159:103673. Abstract
Brown rot fungi dominate the carbon degradation of northern terrestrial conifers. These fungi adapted unique genetic inventories to degrade lignocellulose and to rapidly release a large quantity of carbohydrates for fungal catabolism. We know that brown rot involves "two-step" gene regulation to delay most hydrolytic enzyme expression until after harsh oxidative pretreatments. This implies the crucial role of concise gene regulation to brown rot efficacy, but the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain uncharacterized. Here, using the combined transcriptomic and enzyme analyses we investigated the roles of carbon catabolites in controlling gene expression in model brown rot fungus Rhodonia placenta. We identified co-regulated gene regulons as shared transcriptional responses to no-carbon controls, glucose, cellobiose, or aspen wood (Populus sp.). We found that cellobiose, a common inducing catabolite for fungi, induced expression of main chain-cleaving cellulases in GH5 and GH12 families (cellobiose vs. no-carbon > 4-fold, Padj < 0.05), whereas complex aspen was a universal inducer for Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) expression. Importantly, we observed the attenuated glucose-mediated repression effects on cellulases expression, but not on hemicellulases and lignin oxidoreductases, suggesting fungi might have adapted diverged regulatory routes to boost cellulase production for the fast carbohydrate release. Using carbon regulons, we further predicted the cis- and trans-regulatory elements and assembled a network model of the distinctive regulatory machinery of brown rot. These results offer mechanistic insights into the energy efficiency traits of a common group of decomposer fungi with enormous influence on the carbon cycle.

Abstract
Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is >10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.

Abstract
Background To analyze the distribution of gut microbiota in erectile dysfunction (ED) patients and explore the relationship between the diversity of gut microbiota and psychogenic ED. Methods Stool specimen were collected from 30 patients with ED and 30 healthy persons (healthy donors, HDs) and analyzed Paired end (PE) 300 sequencing on V3-V4 region sequences of bacterial 16S rRNA gene by using Illumina's Miseq platform, whereby sequencing results were analyzed to assess differences in species composition and diversity. The analysis comprised five modules: sequencing data quality control, operational taxonomic units (OTU) species clustering and annotation, alpha diversity, beta diversity and the use of t-tests and analysis of linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) differences. Results The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score ranged between 8 and 21. The scores of ED patients were ≥11 and ≤20, and the mean value was 15.67±2.94. The flora diversity in the group of ED patients was significantly different from that of HDs (P<0.01), with the ED group having low bacterial diversity. There were no significant differences in the genus level between the ED and HD group, and abundant bacteria (TOP10) and core flora (90%). Comparison of total flora (the abundance >1%) display, Alloprevotella genera showed differences, whereby Alloprevotella was only be identified in the HD group. Erectile dysfunction and HD showed good separation and clustering respectively in principal component analysis, showing significant differences in two kinds of microflora. T-tests showed that six species were significantly different, and that in the ED group, streptococci and Subdoligranulum were significantly increasing, and Prevotella sp.9, Blautia, Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 groups and Roseburia were significantly lower. Analysis using LEfSe analysis revealed 24 species were significantly different between ED and HD groups. Conclusions When gene sequencing was performed of ED and HD specimens, the microbial community structure and diversity showed significant differences, suggesting that ED specimen had lower gut microbiota diversity.

Abstract
Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector, the decay D^{0}→ωϕ is observed for the first time. The branching fraction is measured to be (6.48±0.96±0.40)×10^{-4} with a significance of 6.3σ, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. An angular analysis reveals that the ϕ and ω mesons from the D^{0}→ωϕ decay are transversely polarized. The 95% confidence level upper limit on longitudinal polarization fraction is set to be less than 0.24, which is inconsistent with current theoretical expectations and challenges our understanding of the underlying dynamics in charm meson decays.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Apoptosis and oxidative stress have been considered as key events in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Senegenin (Sen), the major and most effective ingredient of Radix Polygalae, which has anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidant effects of Sen on Aβ1-42-induced PC12 cells apoptosis and oxidative stress as well as its possible signaling pathway. METHODS Rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells were treated by 20 μM Aβ1-42 and then divided into 5 different treatment groups (Control; Aβ1-42 20 μM; Aβ1-42 20 μM + Sen 10 μM; Aβ1-42 20 μM + Sen 30 μM; Aβ1-42 20μM + Sen 60 μM). PC12 cells activity was detected by MTT assay. Colony formation assay was performed to assess the clonogenic ability of cells. The cell apoptosis was detected by Annexin-V/PI staining. The pro-apoptotic protein (Bax), anti-apoptotic protein (Bcl-2), anti-oxidative stress factor (HO-1, Nuclear Nrf2, Total Nrf2) and pathway-related protein (Akt, P-Akt, PI3K, P-PI3K) were tested by Western blot. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was assessed with a DCFH-DA probe. RESULTS The results indicated that Sen dose-dependently increased cell viability and reduced the number of apoptotic cells. The ratio of P-PI3K/PI3K and P-Akt/Akt increased in a dose-dependent manner under the treatment of Sen, suggesting that Sen might activate the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Moreover, Sen upregulates the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax. Further study revealed that Sen can play an antioxidant role in enhancing HO-1, promoting Nrf2 nuclear translocation and reducing ROS accumulation to reduce oxidative stress. CONCLUSION Sen is effective in inhibiting apoptosis and oxidative stress in Aβ1-42-induced PC12 cells, which likely contribute to the development of novel therapies for AD.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the epidemiological characteristics of imported COVID-19 cases in Tianjin, and provide references for risk assessment and control of imported COVID-19 cases. Methods: The information of imported COVID-19 cases were obtained from National Notifiable Disease Report System of China CDC. The data of imported COVID-19 cases reported from Tianjin airport and epidemiological surveys by CDCs at all levels from March 15, 2020 to August 31, 2021 were collected and analyzed by using software Excel 2010, SPSS 25.0 and R. Results: From March 15, 2020 to August 31, 2021, a total of 606 imported cases of COVID-19 were reported in Tianjin, in which 552 cases were finally included in the analysis. The male to female ratio of the cases was 1.8∶1, the age of the cases ranged from 3 to 77 years, and the cases were mainly reported in age group 20-39 years (59.8%). The areas where the imported case sojourned within 14 days included Europe (242 cases, 43.8%), Africa (139 cases, 25.2%), Americas (85 cases, 15.4%) and Asia (86 cases, 15.6%). The proportion of confirmed cases in autumn and winter was relatively high. During the study period, the proportion of infected persons found in custom entry quarantine decreased, and the proportion of persons with personal health declaration and under medical isolation observation increased. The interval between entry and diagnosis of infected persons tended to increase. Conclusion: The proportion of imported COVID-19 cases detected on the first day of entry at Tianjin airport decreased, and the interval to detect the infected persons trended to increase, to which close attention must be paid.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Restenosis is a common complication after endovascular treatment of peripheral artery disease. Drug-coated balloon (DCB) treatment has been proven safe and effective in reducing the rate of restenosis for simple and short lesions. However, the clinical results of DCBs for long lesions are still very limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of DCBs in the treatment of long femoropopliteal artery disease. And the results of this study will also complement the existing evidence of DCB treatment of long lesions. METHODS Patients with lesion length ≥15cm according to computed tomography angiography (CTA) or angiography in the AcoArt I Study were included into this study. Based on the balloon catheter used in treatment, patients were divided into the DCB group and the percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) group. The demographic, lesion, and procedural characteristics and 24-month follow-up results were compared between the two groups. The primary efficacy endpoints were angiographic late lumen loss (LLL) at 6 months or at the time of clinically driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR), primary patency (PP), freedom from CD-TLR, and changes in the ankle-brachial index (ABI) and Rutherford class during 24 months of follow-up. The safety endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse events. RESULTS The total number of patients was 87, including 42 in the DCB group and 45 in the PTA group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in demographic, lesion, and procedural characteristics. The 6-month follow-up angiography showed that the LLL was significantly smaller in the DCB group than the PTA group (0.27 ± 0.90 mm vs 1.32 ± 0.91 mm; P<0.001). At 24 months, compared with the PTA group, the DCB group had a significantly higher rate of freedom from CD-TLR (81.58% vs 43.18%; P<0.001) and a significantly higher PP rate (46.88% vs 15.00%; P=0.003). The DCB group had a significantly higher ABI than the PTA group at 6, 12, and 24 months (P<0.001, P=0.004 and P=0.018, respectively). The DCB group had a better Rutherford class than the PTA group at 6 and 12 months (P=0.033 and P=0.012, respectively); the Rutherford class did not significantly differ between the two groups at 24 months (P=0.127). The incidence of major adverse events did not significantly differ between the two groups. CONCLUSION The effectiveness of the DCB is superior to a standard uncoated balloon in treating long lesions during 24 months of follow-up. Furthermore, the safety of the DCB is equivalent to that of PTA.

Abstract
We measured the ground-state hyperfine splitting of trapped 113Cd+ ions to be 15199862855.02799(27) Hz with a fractional uncertainty of 1.8×10-14. The ions were trapped and laser-cooled in a linear quadrupole Paul trap. The fractional frequency stability was measured to be 4.2×10-13/τ, obtained from Ramsey fringes of high signal-to-noise ratios and taken over a measurement time of nearly 5 h, which is close to the short-term stability limit estimated from the Dick effect. Our result is consistent with previously reported values, but the measurement precision is four times better than the best result obtained to date.

Abstract
We propose a compact polarization-resolved common-path digital holography for measuring the polarization distribution of a light field dynamically with high temporal stability. The designed experimental setup allows simultaneously recording, in a common-path manner, two holograms carrying the complex amplitude information of two orthogonal polarization components of the light field. Based on the theory of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase to retrieve the full Stokes parameters of the light field, we demonstrate the experiments with polarized optical elements, stressed glass plate, and micrometer-sized liquid crystal droplet. The measurement results verify the method's high accuracy and stability, and the capability of measuring light fields with sizes ranging from centimeters to micrometers. Owing to the stable and compact optical path structure, this method is conducive to instrumentation and is expected to find wide applications in many fields.

Abstract
Using a dataset of 6.32 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4178 and 4226 MeV, we have measured the absolute branching fraction of the leptonic decay D_{s}^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ} via τ^{+}→e^{+}ν_{e}ν[over ¯]_{τ}, and find B_{D_{s}^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ}}=(5.27±0.10±0.12)×10^{-2}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The precision is improved by a factor of 2 compared to the previous best measurement. Combining with f_{D_{s}^{+}} from lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations or the |V_{cs}| from the CKMfitter group, we extract |V_{cs}|=0.978±0.009±0.012 and f_{D_{s}^{+}}=(251.1±2.4±3.0) MeV, respectively. Combining our result with the world averages of B_{D_{s}^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ}} and B_{D_{s}^{+}→μ^{+}ν_{μ}}, we obtain the ratio of the branching fractions B_{D_{s}^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ}}/B_{D_{s}^{+}→μ^{+}ν_{μ}}=9.72±0.37, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of lepton flavor universality.

Abstract
Using 2.93 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data taken with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV, the observation of the D^{0}→K_{1}(1270)^{-}e^{+}ν_{e} semileptonic decay is presented. The statistical significance of the decay D^{0}→K_{1}(1270)^{-}e^{+}ν_{e} is greater than 10σ. The branching fraction of D^{0}→K_{1}(1270)^{-}e^{+}ν_{e} is measured to be (1.09±0.13_{-0.16}^{+0.09}±0.12)×10^{-3}. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third originates from the assumed branching fraction of K_{1}(1270)^{-}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in D^{0}→K_{1}(1270)^{-}e^{+}ν_{e} is determined for the first time to be 0.50±0.19_{stat}±0.08_{syst}.

First Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of Λ→pμ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:121802. Abstract
The absolute branching fraction of Λ→pμ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ} is reported for the first time based on an e^{+}e^{-} annihilation sample of 10×10^{9} J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at sqrt[s]=3.097 GeV. The branching fraction is determined to be B(Λ→pμ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ})=[1.48±0.21(stat)±0.08(syst)]×10^{-4}, which is improved by about 30% in precision over the previous indirect measurements. Combining this result with the world average of B(Λ→pe^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e}), we obtain the ratio {[Γ(Λ→pμ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ})]/[Γ(Λ→pe^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e})]} to be 0.178±0.028, which agrees with the standard model prediction assuming lepton flavor universality. The asymmetry of the branching fractions of Λ→pμ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ} and Λ[over ¯]→p[over ¯]μ^{+}ν_{μ} is also determined, and no evidence for CP violation is found.

Abstract
We propose double structured illumination microscopy (SIM) method, which enables simultaneous imaging of achiral and chiral domains at sub-wavelength resolution. In double SIM, the illumination field is spatially structured both in the intensity and optical chirality so that moiré effects can be concurrently generated on the achiral and chiral fluorescent domains of a sample. This allows for down-modulating the high spatial frequency of both domains at the same time and thus provides sub-wavelength details after image reconstruction. We introduce the working principle of double SIM and theoretically demonstrate the feasibility of this method using different kinds of synthetic samples.

Abstract
In this paper, a new two-parameter logistic testlet response theory model for dichotomous items is proposed by introducing testlet discrimination parameters to model the local dependence among items within a common testlet. In addition, a highly effective Bayesian sampling algorithm based on auxiliary variables is proposed to estimate the testlet effect models. The new algorithm not only avoids the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm boring adjustment the turning parameters to achieve an appropriate acceptance probability, but also overcomes the dependence of the Gibbs sampling algorithm on the conjugate prior distribution. Compared with the traditional Bayesian estimation methods, the advantages of the new algorithm are analyzed from the various types of prior distributions. Based on the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) output, two Bayesian model assessment methods are investigated concerning the goodness of fit between models. Finally, three simulation studies and an empirical example analysis are given to further illustrate the advantages of the new testlet effect model and Bayesian sampling algorithm.

Abstract
In order to explore the mechanism of gefitinib-acquired resistance in lung cancer, a new biomarker has been developed for early clinical diagnosis and intervention; human NSCLC (Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer) cell lines H292 (denoted as H292S) and PC9 (denoted as PC9S) were used to establish gefitinibresistant NSCLC cell lines H292 and PC9 models. CCK-8 (Cell Counting Kit-8) method was used to test the drug resistance of the cells. circRNAs (circular RNAs) that were differentially expressed before and after resistance were screened by RNA sequencing technology. The effects of circSETD3 overexpression and interference on the sensitivity of gefitinib was observed to analyze the nuclear localization of circSETD3 and verify the interaction between circSETD3-miR-520h-ABCG2. The results showed that the most significant change in differential expression of human NSCLC cell lines before and after drug resistance was hsa_circ_0000567, that is, circSETD3, which is mainly present in the cytoplasm. In H292S and PC9S, compared with the negative control group, the cell proliferation ability of the overexpression group was significantly increased, and the apoptosis ability was significantly decreased. In H292R and PC9R, compared with the negative control group, the proliferation ability of the interference group was significantly decreased, and the apoptosis ability was significantly increased. Overexpression of circSETD3 to H292S and PC9S, the expression of ABCG2 increased significantly. Also, the expression of ABCG2 decreased significantly after transfection with miR-520h mimics. H292R and PC9R interfered with circSETD3, the expression of ABCG2 decreased significantly. Moreover, the expression of ABCG2 increased significantly after transfection with miR-520h inhibitor. In conclusion, circSETD3 can be used as a novel biomarker for lung cancer. It relieves miR-520h degradation of the transporter ABCG2 by down-regulating the miR-520h expression, causing gefitinib to be pumped out of the cell.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the observed cross sections of e^{+}e^{-}→J/ψX based on 3.21 fb^{-1} of data accumulated at energies from 3.645 to 3.891 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. In analysis of the cross sections, we measured the decay branching fractions of B(ψ(3686)→J/ψX)=(64.4±0.6±1.6)% and B(ψ(3770)→J/ψX)=(0.5±0.2±0.1)% for the first time. The energy-dependent line shape of these cross sections cannot be well described by two Breit-Wigner (BW) amplitudes of the expected decays ψ(3686)→J/ψX and ψ(3770)→J/ψX. Instead, it can be better described with one more BW amplitude of the decay R(3760)→J/ψX. Under this assumption, we extracted the R(3760) mass M_{R(3760)}=3766.2±3.8±0.4 MeV/c^{2} , total width Γ_{R(3760)}^{tot}=22.2±5.9±1.4 MeV, and product of leptonic width and decay branching fraction Γ_{R(3760)}^{ee}B[R(3760)→J/ψX]=(79.4±85.5±11.7) eV. The significance of the R(3760) is 5.3σ. The first uncertainties of these measured quantities are from fits to the cross sections and second systematic.

Abstract
Objective: To study the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) of scar skin in patients with superficial scars, hypertrophic scars, and atrophic scars, and to explore the correlation between TEWL and scar severity. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted. From February 2017 to February 2019, 120 scar patients who met the inclusion criteria were admitted to the General Hospital of Jilin Chemical Industry Group, including 78 males and 42 females, aged (35±14) years. According to the diagnosis on admission, there were 40 cases of superficial scar patients, 40 cases of hypertrophic scar patients, and 40 cases of atrophic scar patients. On admission, the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) was used to score the scar of each patient; the TEWL of scar skin and normal skin 1 cm from the edge of scar or the same site of the healthy side (hereinafter referred to as normal skin) of each patient was measured by water loss tester, and the difference value of TEWL between scar skin and normal skin (hereinafter referred to as the TEWL difference) was calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test, paired sample t test, one-way analysis of variance, and Dunnett-t test for comparison, and the correlation between the difference value of TEWL and scar VSS score was analyzed with univariate linear regression analysis. Results: On admission, the scar VSS score of superficial scar patients was significantly lower than that of hypertrophic scar or atrophic scar patients (t=4.403, 4.768, P<0.01), and the scar VSS score of atrophic scar patients was significantly lower than that of hypertrophic scar patients (t=4.185, P<0.01). On admission, the TEWL of scar skin of superficial scar, hypertrophic scar, and atrophic scar patients were (18±4), (20±4), and (20±5) g·m-2·h-1 respectively, significantly higher than (12±3), (12±3), and (14±4) g·m-2·h-1 of normal skin (t=6.889, 10.221, 5.870, P<0.01). The difference values of TEWL of superficial scar, hypertrophic scar, and atrophic scar patients were (5.9±1.7), (8.1±1.7), and (6.4±2.1) g·m-2·h-1 respectively. In comparison among different types of scar patients, only the TEWL difference of hypertrophic scar patients was significantly higher than that of superficial scar patients (t=6.975, P<0.05). The TEWL difference and the scar VSS score in patients with superficial scars, hypertrophic scars, and atrophic scars were significantly positively correlated (r=0.805, 0.872, 0.826, P<0.01). Conclusions: The TEWL of scar skin in patients with superficial scars, hypertrophic scars, and atrophic scars is increased compared with normal skin, and the degree of increase was positively correlated with the severity of scars.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the long-term outcomes after drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty dissection in patients with complex femoropopliteal artery disease. Methods Two hundred patients with femoropopliteal peripheral artery disease were enrolled in the AcoArt I trial and randomly assigned to either the DCB or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) group. A total of 86 patients with post-balloon angioplasty dissection were reanalyzed. The primary endpoint was clinically driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR) over five years. Kaplan–Meier curve estimates were used to evaluate the association between the treatment and CD-TLR. Interaction and stratified analyses were also performed. Results Over five years, patients treated with DCB angioplasty demonstrated an acceptable effect with a numerically higher but not statistically significant rate of freedom from CD-TLR compared with those treated by PTA (Kaplan–Meier estimate of 77.6% vs 64.4%; log-rank P = 0.08). Among the patients who underwent TLR, the mean time from intervention to TLR in the DCB group was significantly prolonged compared to the PTA group (P < 0.001). The stratified analysis showed that the Rutherford classification played an interactive role in the association between the DCB angioplasty and low CD-TLR rate at five years. No significant difference in the all-cause mortality was found in the patients with post-balloon angioplasty dissection between the two treatment groups. Conclusion The five-year follow-up outcomes of the post-balloon angioplasty dissection in the AcoArt I trial demonstrated that DCB angioplasty is more trustworthy than PTA, with a higher rate of freedom than CD-TLR and sustained improvement in clinical symptoms. However, the all-cause mortality rate in patients with femoropopliteal lesions is similar after both DCB angioplasty and PTA. Clinical Trial Registration http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the stent-assisted coil embolization and flow diversion treatments of blood-blister-like aneurysms based on the theory of acute dissection of the internal carotid artery. PATIENTS AND METHODS From July 2016 through July 2020, 27 patients presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) due to rupture of internal carotid artery blood blister-like aneurysms were subjected to endovascular treatment with stent-assisted coiling or Pipeline flow diversion. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using modified Rankin Scale score (mRS). RESULTS A proximal stenosis caused by angiopathology adjacent to aneurysms were found on internal carotid artery angiograms in all 27 cases. The angiopathology combining with the aneurysms implement that acute dissection of the supraclinoid segment of the internal carotid artery indicated the pathogenesis of blood blister-like aneurysm formation. All aneurysms were treated successfully with alleviation of the adjacent angiopathology after stenting on angiograms. During 1-12 months, mean 3.5 months, complete aneurysm obliteration without adjacent stenosis were found in 25(92.6%) patients. Two (7.4%) cases of recanalization were retreated with complete obliteration at 1 week and 3 months after initial treatment. Clinical mRS 0 and 1 outcomes were observed in 23(85.2%) patients, mRS 2 in 3(11.1%) patients and mRS 6 in 1(3.7%) not related to aneurysm treatment during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Acute focal dissection of supraclinoid segment of internal carotid artery underlies the development of blood blister-like aneurysm. Stent-assisted coiling and flow diversion treatments constitute appropriate treatment based on the arterial dissection pathology.

Abstract
Low-molecular-weight (LMW) aromatics are crucial in meditating fungal processes for plant biomass decomposition. Some LMW compounds are employed as electron donors for oxidative degradation in brown rot (BR), an efficient wood-degrading strategy in fungi that selectively degrades carbohydrates but leaves modified lignins. Previous understandings of LMW aromatics were primarily based on “bulk extraction”, an approach that cannot fully reflect their real-time functions during BR. Here, we applied an optimized molecular imaging method that combines matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) with Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) to directly measure the temporal profiles of BR aromatics as Rhodonia placenta decayed a wood wafer. We found that some phenolics were pre-existing in wood, while some (e.g., catechin-methyl ether and dihydroxy-dimethoxyflavan) were generated immediately after fungal activity. These pinpointed aromatics might be recruited to drive early BR oxidative mechanisms by generating Fenton reagents, Fe2+ and H2O2. As BR progressed, ligninolytic products were accumulated and then modified into various aromatic derivatives, confirming that R. placenta depolymerizes lignin. Together, this work confirms aromatic patterns that have been implicated in BR fungi, and it demonstrates the use of MALDI-FTICR-MS imaging as a new approach to monitor the temporal changes of LMW aromatics during wood degradation.

Abstract
In this paper, a new item-weighted scheme is proposed to assess examinees’ growth in longitudinal analysis. A multidimensional Rasch model for measuring learning and change (MRMLC) and its polytomous extension is used to fit the longitudinal item response data. In fact, the new item-weighted likelihood estimation method is not only suitable for complex longitudinal IRT models, but also it can be used to estimate the unidimensional IRT models. For example, the combination of the two-parameter logistic (2PL) model and the partial credit model (PCM, Masters, 1982) with a varying number of categories. Two simulation studies are carried out to further illustrate the advantages of the item-weighted likelihood estimation method compared to the traditional Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimation method, Maximum likelihood estimation method (MLE), Warm’s (1989) weighted likelihood estimation (WLE) method, and type-weighted maximum likelihood estimation (TWLE) method. Simulation results indicate that the improved item-weighted likelihood estimation method better recover examinees’ true ability level for both complex longitudinal IRT models and unidimensional IRT models compared to the existing likelihood estimation (MLE, WLE and TWLE) methods and MAP estimation method, with smaller bias, root-mean-square errors, and root-mean-square difference especially at the low-and high-ability levels.

Abstract
This study reviewed the clinical data of patients who were hospitalized in the Department of Neurology of Henan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2017 to October 2020. A total of 46 patients with positive serum anti-CV2 antibody were included. The average age of the patients was (54±15) years old, with a male to female ratio of 1.88∶1. Twenty-six patients were diagnosed with paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS). The most malignant tumors were thymoma, small cell lung cancer, and prostate cancer. The most common PNS included myasthenia gravis, subacute cerebellar degeneration, and subacute/chronic sensorimotor neuropathies. Twenty non-PNS patients exhibited subacute/old cerebral infarction, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and so on. Among them, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 10 cases showed different degrees of white matter demyelination, some of which were accompanied by brain atrophy. The current study found that the positive predictive value of anti-CV2 antibody for the diagnosis of PNS was 56.5%, which was relatively weak. As an accompanying antibody, it may be a coincidence, and it may also be related to the involvement of family members in the pathological process of the diseases.

Abstract
Quantum gates induced by geometric phases are intrinsically robust against noise due to the global properties of their evolution paths. Compared to conventional nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation, the recently proposed nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric quantum computation (NNGQC) works in a faster fashion while still remaining the robust feature of the geometric operations. Here, we experimentally implement the NNGQC in a single trapped ultracold ^{40}Ca^{+} ion to verify the noise-resilient and fast feature. By performing unitary operations under imperfect conditions, we witness the advantages of the NNGQC with measured fidelities by quantum process tomography in comparison to other two quantum gates by conventional nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation and by straightforward dynamical evolution. Our results provide the first evidence confirming the possibility of accelerated quantum information processing with limited systematic errors even in an imperfect situation.

Abstract
The Crab Nebula is a bright source of gamma rays powered by the Crab Pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind. We report the detection of gamma rays from this source with energies from 5 × 10-4 to 1.1 peta-electron volts with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades. The ultrahigh-energy photons imply the presence of a peta-electron volt electron accelerator (a pevatron) in the nebula, with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the theoretical limit. We constrain the pevatron's size between 0.025 and 0.1 parsecs and the magnetic field to ≈110 microgauss. The production rate of peta-electron volt electrons, 2.5 × 1036 ergs per second, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar spin-down luminosity, although we cannot exclude a contribution of peta-electron volt protons to the production of the highest-energy gamma rays.

Extended Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission Surrounding PSR J0622+3749 Observed by LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 126:241103. Abstract
We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E>25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17_{stat}±0.02_{sys}. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160 TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

Abstract
A mixture cognitive diagnosis model (CDM), which is called mixture multiple strategy-Deterministic, Inputs, Noisy "and" Gate (MMS-DINA) model, is proposed to investigate individual differences in the selection of response categories in multiple-strategy items. The MMS-DINA model system is an effective psychometric and statistical approach consisting of multiple strategies for practical skills diagnostic testing, which not only allows for multiple strategies of problem solving, but also allows for different strategies to be associated with different levels of difficulty. A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm for parameter estimation is given to estimate model, and four simulation studies are presented to evaluate the performance of the MCMC algorithm. Based on the available MCMC outputs, two Bayesian model selection criteria are computed for guiding the choice of the single strategy DINA model and multiple strategy DINA models. An analysis of fraction subtraction data is provided as an illustration example.

Accurate artificial boundary conditions for semi-discretized one-dimensional peridynamics. Proc Math Phys Eng Sci 2021. Abstract
The peridynamic theory reformulates the equations of continuum mechanics in terms of integro-differential equations instead of partial differential equations. In this paper, we consider the construction of artificial boundary conditions (ABCs) for semi-discretized peridynamics using Green functions. Especially, the Green functions that represent the response to the single wave source are used to construct the accu2rate boundary conditions. The recursive relationships between the Green functions are proposed, therefore the Green functions can be computed through a differential and integral system with high precision. The numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed ABCs. The proposed method can be applied to modelling of wave propagation for other non-local theories and high-dimensional cases.

Abstract
The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons-cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3-6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators.

Plasmonic elliptical nanoholes for chiroptical analysis and enantioselective optical trapping. NANOSCALE 2021; 13:9185-9192. Abstract
A simple yet effective achiral platform using elliptical nanoholes for chiroptical analysis is demonstrated. Under linearly polarized excitation, an elliptical nanohole in a thin gold film can generate a localized chiral optical field for chiroptical analysis and simultaneously serve as a near-field optical trap to capture dielectric and plasmonic nanospheres. In particular, the trapping potential is enantioselective for dielectric nanospheres, i.e., the hole traps or repels the dielectric nanoparticles depending on the sample chirality. For plasmonic nanospheres, the trapping potential well is much deeper than that for dielectric particles, rendering the enantioselectivity less pronounced. This platform is suitable for chiral analysis with nanoparticle-based solid-state extraction and pre-concentration. Compared to plasmonic chiroptical sensing using chiral structures or circularly polarized light, elliptical nanoholes are a simple and effective platform, which is expected to have a relatively low background because chiroptical noise from the structure or chiral species outside the nanohole is minimized. The use of linearly polarized excitation also makes the platform easily compatible with a commercial optical microscope.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between post-balloon angioplasty dissection and the mid-term results of the AcoArt I trial evaluating complex femoropopliteal artery disease. METHODS The outcome data for 144 patients from the AcoArt 1 trial were reanalysed. These patients were randomly divided into percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and drug-coated balloons (DCB) groups. The primary endpoint was the primary patency (PP) rate and clinically-driven target lesion revascularisation at 24 months. RESULTS After 24 months of follow-up, the PP rate of dissection cases in the PTA group was lower vs non-dissection cases. In patients receiving a bailout stent for dissection, the PP rate in the PTA group was lower vs the DCB group. Cox regression analysis showed that dissection decreased the PP rate; mild dissection reduced the PP rate as follows: 52%, PTA group and 19%, DCB group. With severe dissection, the PP rate reduction was as follows: 75%, PTA group and 73%, DCB group. CONCLUSIONS The mid-term follow-up showed that post-balloon angioplasty dissection reduced the PP rate in the PTA group but not in the DCB group. Additionally, in patients receiving a bailout stent for dissection, the DCB group had a better PP rate than the PTA group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the molecular basis of two individuals with weak D variant of the Rh blood type. METHODS Routine serological testing was carried out to detect the D, C, c, E and e antigens of the Rh blood group. The D antigen was further detected with an indirect antiglobulin test. The presence of Rhesus box was detected by PCR to determine the homozygosity of the RHD gene. RESULTS Both samples were determined as weak D phenotype by the indirect antiglobulin test. DNA sequencing revealed that case 1 harbored a heterozygous 208C>T variant in exon 2 and a heterozygous 1227G>A variant in exon 9; while case 2 harbored homozygous 779A>G variants of exon 5 of the RHD gene. Case 1 was determined as RHD+/RHD+, while case 2 was determined as RHD+/RHD-. The two samples were respectively named as weak D type 122 and weak D type 149 based on the rules of Rhesus Base Nomenclature. CONCLUSION D negative blood donors should subject to indirect antiglobulin testing and molecular analysis for safer transfusion.

Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical manifestations, neuroimaging, cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) cytology and prognosis of Leptomeningeal metastases(LM). Methods: The clinical manifestations, imaging features and CSF cytology of LM patients admitted to Henan Provincial People's Hospital from May 1, 2015 to May 31, 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The overall survival (OS) was evaluated by the time from the diagnosis of LM to death. Results: A total of 88 patients with LM were enrolled in the study, and the median age was 59 years (range:28-78 years). There were 42 males (47.7%) and 46 females (52.3%). According to the pathological classification, it was lung cancer in 58 cases (65.9%), gastric cancer in 13 cases (14.8%), breast cancer in 7 cases (8.0%), melanoma in 1 case, esophageal cancer in 1 case, gallbladder cancer in 1 case, renal cell carcinoma in 1 case, double source cancer in 2 cases, and unknown source in 4 cases. The median Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) score was 50. LM was the initial manifestation of cancer in 34 patients. All patients had LM-related clinical symptoms, including headache in 73 cases (83.0%), nausea and vomiting in 63 cases (71.6%), abnormal physical and mental behaviors in 37 cases (42.0%), seizure in 41 cases (46.6%). Cranial nerve involvement was observed in 23 patients (39.0%) and spinal nerve involvement in 20(33.9%). There were 61 patients (83.6%) who showed neuroimaging features of LM. Tumor cells or atypical cells were found in 90.8% of patients for the first time, and activated monocytes in 47 cases (54.7%). The median OS was 13.0 weeks (95%CI:2.9-23.1) with the 1-year survival rate of 19.1%. Univariate analysis of survival indicated that lung cancer, lower KPS score, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and whole brain radiotherapy were favorable predictors of survival (P<0.05). Conclusions: The overall prognosis of LM is poor. Good physical condition, TKIs treatment and whole brain radiotherapy might improve clinical outcomes of LM patients.

Abstract
Scales are symbolic characteristic of Lepidoptera; however, nothing is known about the contribution of cuticular proteins (CPs) to the complex patterning of lepidopteran scales. This is because scales are resistant to solubilization, thus hindering molecular studies. Here we succeeded in dissolving developing wing scales from Bombyx mori, allowing analysis of their protein composition. We identified a distinctive class of histidine rich (His-rich) CPs (6%-45%) from developing lepidopteran scales by LC-MS/MS. Functional studies using RNAi revealed CPs with different histidine content play distinct and critical roles in constructing the microstructure of the scale surface. Moreover, we successfully synthesized films in vitro by crosslinking a 45% His-rich CP (BmorCPR152) with laccase2 using N-acetyl- dopamine or N-β-alanyl-dopamine as the substrate. This molecular study of scales provides fundamental information about how such a fine microstructure is constructed and insights into the potential application of CPs as new biomaterials.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the influence of characteristics of green space on blood pressure control. Methods: Hypertensive patients who were managed by community health centers for one year and aged 35 years old and above were selected as the study subjects in Shenzhen. Multi-stage random sampling method was applied to select a representative sample of 1 200 patients. A total of 1 116 valid questionnaires were collected, with a response rate of 93.0%. From November 2019 to January 2020, well-structured questionnaire, physical examination and laboratory biochemical test were applied for information collection among the 1 116 participants. Binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between characteristics of green space and blood pressure control. Results: The rate of blood pressure control was 67.8%. Results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting confounding factors, health supporting elements, such as fitness areas (OR=1.678, 95%CI:1.231-2.288), collective exercise venues(OR=1.373, 95%CI:1.020-1.848), health knowledge promotion areas (OR=1.416, 95%CI: 1.049-1.911) in green space, were significantly correlated with blood pressure control. Green space safetiness (OR=1.010, 95%CI: 1.000-1.019), comfortableness (OR=1.011, 95%CI: 1.001-1.021) and maintenance status (OR=1.011, 95%CI: 1.001-1.021) also played a role. The rate of blood control among patients with exclusive green space was higher than that of patients without exclusive green space (OR=1.333, 95%CI: 1.009-1.762). Conclusion: Health supporting elements, safety, comfort, maintenance of green space and exclusive green space play an important role in blood pressure controlling.

Abstract
Surface plasmon resonance holographic microscopy (SPRHM), combining digital holographic microscopy with surface plasmon resonance (SPR), can simultaneously obtain the amplitude and phase distributions of the reflected beam carrying specimen information in SPR. Due to the decaying length of the surface plasmon wave as large as tens of micrometers, the spatial resolution of SPRHM is lower than that of ordinary optical microscopes. In this work, we propose a scheme to improve the spatial resolution of SPRHM by applying dual-channel SPR excitations. Through the polarization multiplexing technique, two holograms carrying the information of SPR excited in orthogonal directions are simultaneously acquired. Via a numerical reconstruction and filtering algorithm for holograms, the lateral spatial resolution of SPRHM can be effectively enhanced to reach nearly 1 µm at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. This is comparable to the resolution of traditional optical microscopes, while possessing the advantages of wide-field imaging and high measurement sensitivity of SPR.

Abstract
Objective: To examine a survival prognostic model applicable for patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) based on Bayesian network. Methods: The clinical and pathological data of ICC patients who underwent curative intent resection in ten Chinese hepatobiliary surgery centers from January 2010 to December 2018 were collected.A total of 516 patients were included in the study. There were 266 males and 250 females. The median age(M(QR)) was 58(14) years. One hundred and sixteen cases (22.5%) with intrahepatic bile duct stones, and 143 cases (27.7%) with chronic viral hepatitis. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. The univariate and multivariate analysis were implemented respectively using the Log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard model.One-year survival prediction models based on tree augmented naive Bayesian (TAN) and naïve Bayesian algorithm were established by Bayesialab software according to different variables,a nomogram model was also developed based on the independent predictors. The receiver operating characteristic curve and the area under curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the prediction effect of the models. Results: The overall median survival time was 25.0 months, and the 1-,3-and 5-year cumulative survival rates was 76.6%,37.9%,and 21.0%,respectively.Univariate analysis showed that gender, preoperative jaundice, pathological differentiation, vascular invasion, microvascular invasion, liver capsule invasion,T staging,N staging, margin, intrahepatic bile duct stones, carcinoembryonic antigen, and CA19-9 affected the prognosis(χ2=5.858-54.974, all P<0.05).The Cox multivariate model showed that gender, pathological differentiation, liver capsule invasion,T stage,N stage, intrahepatic bile duct stones, and CA19-9 were the independent predictive factors(all P<0.05). The AUC of the TAN model based on all 19 clinicopathological factors was 74.5%,and the AUC of the TAN model based on the 12 prognostic factors derived from univariate analysis was 74.0%,the AUC of the naïve Bayesian model based on 7 independent prognostic risk factors was 79.5%,the AUC and C-index of the nomogram survival prediction model based on 7 independent prognostic risk factors were 78.8% and 0.73,respectively. Conclusion: The Bayesian network model may provide a relatively accurate prognostic prediction for ICC patients after curative intent resection and performed superior to the nomogram model.

Abstract
We report a study of the processes of e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}D_{s}^{-}D^{*0} and K^{+}D_{s}^{*-}D^{0} based on e^{+}e^{-} annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb^{-1}. An excess of events over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the D_{s}^{-}D^{*0} and D_{s}^{*-}D^{0} mass thresholds in the K^{+} recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at sqrt[s]=4.681 GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as (3982.5_{-2.6}^{+1.8}±2.1) MeV/c^{2} and (12.8_{-4.4}^{+5.3}±3.0) MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 σ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate for a charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into D_{s}^{-}D^{*0} and D_{s}^{*-}D^{0}. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.

Abstract
Voracious feeding, trans-continental migration and insecticide resistance make Spodoptera litura among the most difficult Asian agricultural pests to control. Larvae exhibit strong circadian behavior, feeding actively at night and hiding in soil during daytime. The daily pattern of larval metabolism was reversed, with higher transcription levels of genes for digestion (amylase, protease, lipase) and detoxification (CYP450s, GSTs, COEs) in daytime than at night. To investigate the control of these processes, we annotated nine essential clock genes and analyzed their transcription patterns, followed by functional analysis of their coupling using siRNA knockdown of interlocked negative feedback system core and repressor genes (SlituClk, SlituBmal1 and SlituCwo). Based on phase relationships and overexpression in cultured cells the controlling mechanism seems to involve direct coupling of the circadian processes to E-boxes in responding promoters. Additional manipulations involving exposure to the neonicotinoid imidacloprid suggested that insecticide application must be based on chronotoxicological considerations for optimal effectiveness. Zhang et al. show that the circadian gene coupling between night feeding and day detoxification is regulated through the binding of circadian elements to E-boxes in Spodoptera litura, one of the most difficult Asian agricultural pests to control. Exposure of these larvae to a pesticide affects them more at night than during the day, suggesting the need for time-of-day considerations for pesticide application.
