Abstract
PURPOSE This study reviewed the past and present status of liver transplantation (LT) and outlooks for the future of LT in Korea. METHOD The first LT in Korea was successfully performed using a deceased donor graft in 1988. Pediatric and adult living donor liver transplantations (LDLTs) were initiated in 1994 and 1997, respectively. From 1988 to 2013, 10,581 LTs were performed at 40 centers, whereas LDLT accounted for 76.5% of all LTs. RESULTS In the early 1990s, the deceased organ donation rate was less than 1.5 per million population (PMP) per year, but it increased to 5 PMP beginning in 2008. Despite the increasing number of deceased donor liver transplantations (DDLTs), high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-induced cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has provoked persistent performance of adult LDLT with technical advancement including middle hepatic vein (MHV) reconstruction of right lobe graft and dual graft LDLT with 1 nationwide donor mortality. CONCLUSION The number of LTs in Korea in 2010 was 23.2 PMP (1042 LTs/45 million population), lower than 23.5 PMP of Spain, but higher than 20 PMP of the United States. However, future LT numbers may decrease because of lowering the HBV carrier rate (neonatal HBV universal vaccination began in 1992), new potent anti-HBV agents, and lowest birth rate (1.22 children per family) with a decrease of potential live donors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormal serum lipid profiles are an issue in chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the clinical ramifications of dyslipidemia in live kidney donors are unclear. Thus, we explored the relationship between serum lipids and residual renal function in living donors post-nephrectomy. METHODS Charts of living donors who underwent nephrectomy between January 2010 and March 2013 were reviewed, targeting those with 6-month follow-up examinations at minimum. Altogether, 282 donors were studied, examining total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels assayed before donation by standard techniques. Median follow-up time was 14 months. The relationship between postoperative renal function and allograft biopsy results was assessed. Recursive partitioning was applied to identify optimal cut-off points for each parameter. RESULTS Median (interquartile range) serum TC, TG, LDL, and HDL levels were 183 (161-205) mg/dL, 86 (63-131) mg/dL, 108 (92-128) mg/dL, and 53 (44-62) mg/dL, respectively. The glomerular filtration rate at last follow-up was associated with TC (r = -0.187; P = .002) and LDL (r = -0.172; P = .005) levels, but showed no correlation with TG and HDL. Root nodes of TC and LDL determinations in recursive partitioning were 170.5 mg/dL and 80.5 mg/dL, respectively, serving as thresholds for further evaluation. On logistic regression analysis, the likelihood of CKD (glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m(2)) at last follow-up was greater in donors with elevated TC and LDL levels (odds ratio = 1.96 and 3.33; P = .021 and .029, respectively). CONCLUSION Kidney donors with serum TC and LDL elevations require close observation, given their demonstrable predisposition to CKD after donation.

Abstract
Chemical storage rooms located near engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) workplaces can be a significant source of unintentional nanoaerosol generation. A new incidental nanoparticle source was identified and characterized in a chemical storage room located at an ENMs workplace. Stationary and mobile measurements using on-line instruments and chemical analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were carried out to identify the source. The number of nanoaerosols emitted from the chemical storage room was found to be several orders of magnitude higher than that existing in the ENMs workplace. VOC analysis showed that the accumulated precursors and oxygenated VOCs in the chemical storage room could be attributed to incidental particle formation via gas-to-particle conversion. We stress the importance of identification of the incidental nanoaerosols to allow characterization of the nanoaerosols at ENMs workplaces, and to estimate additional nanoaerosols exposure, which was previously unknown. Hazardous chemical substances in the workplace have been regulated in many countries; however, most of the regulations are focused on gas-phase or liquid-phase substances. The present study emphasizes the importance of secondary pollutants in particulate form that can be generated from the gas or liquid phase of hazardous chemical substances.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Optimization of kidney donor selection is critical to ensure recovery of the donor. The goal of this study was to determine the influence of metabolic syndrome on renal histology and perioperative renal function in living kidney donors. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between January 2010 and March 2013, a total of 363 living kidney donors who underwent donor nephrectomy at our institution were enrolled. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in patients according to the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III, and renal histology of implantation biopsy specimens and perioperative renal function were compared in participants with or without metabolic syndrome. Using multivariate regression analysis, the goal was to identify which component of metabolic syndrome induces chronic histologic changes and delayed renal function recovery. RESULTS We identified 30 donors (8.45%) with metabolic syndrome. Donors with metabolic syndrome were older (48.4 ± 9.2 years vs 39.7 ± 11.4 years; P < .001) and more likely to have chronic histologic changes (36.8% vs 9.7%; P = .001) than subjects without metabolic syndrome. Results of the multivariate regression analysis indicated that obesity, hyperglycemia, and hypertriglyceridemia were independently associated with chronic histologic changes. Perioperative renal function was correlated with the presence of metabolic syndrome rather than with chronic histologic changes, and patients with metabolic syndrome were more likely to experience delayed renal function recovery. Linear regression models found that the sum of the metabolic components correlated with renal function 6 months postoperatively, but among all risk factors, only obesity was significantly associated with the occurrence of delayed renal function recovery (odds ratio, 2.67; P = .001). CONCLUSIONS Although metabolic syndrome in living kidney donors is characterized by chronic histologic changes, perioperative renal function is affected by the syndrome itself rather than by the histologic changes. Obesity is the most important metabolic factor for predicting delayed renal function recovery in living kidney donors, providing an important clinical indicator of postoperative renal function in these patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Contrast-enhanced cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been introduced and accepted as a useful technique to evaluate delicate vascular anatomy and neurovascular stents. Current protocol for CBCT requires quantitative dilution of contrast medium to obtain adequate quality images. Here, we introduce simple methods to obtain contrast-enhanced CBCT without quantitative contrast dilution. METHODS A simple experiment was performed to estimate the change in flow rate in the internal carotid artery during the procedure. Transcranial doppler (TCD) was used to evaluate the velocity change before and after catheterization and fluid infusion. In addition, 0.3 cm(3)/s (n = 3) and 0.2 cm(3)/s (n = 7) contrast infusions were injected and followed by saline flushes using a 300 mmHg pressure bag to evaluate neurovascular stent and host arteries. RESULTS Flow velocities changed -15 ± 6.8 % and +17 ± 5.5 % from baseline during catheterization and guiding catheter flushing with a 300 mmHg pressure bag, respectively. Evaluation of the stents and vascular structure was feasible using this technique in all patients. Quality assessment showed that the 0.2 cm(3)/s contrast infusion protocol was better for evaluating the stent and host artery. CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced CBCT can be performed without quantitative contrast dilution. Adequate contrast dilution can be achieved with a small saline flush and normal blood flow.

Abstract
The luminance mechanisms of the white organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs) with a charge generation layer (CGL) consisting of a tungsten oxide layer and a 5,6,11,12-tetraphenyltetracene (rubrene) doped N,N',-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl1-1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB) layer were investigated. Current densities and luminances of the WOLEDs increased with increasing a rubrene doping concentration because the formation of excitons in the rubrene-doped NPB layer increased due to the more exciton trapping in rubrene molecules and the delay of the electron injection due to the insertion of the litium qunolate layer. The yellow light emitted from the rubrene-doped NPB layer in the CGL combined with the blue light from the main emitting layer of the WOLEDs, resulting in the emission of the white light. The ratio between the yellow and the blue color peak intensities of the electroluminescence spectra for the WOLEDs was controlled by the rubrene doping concentration. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of the fabricated WOLED were (0.31, 0.42) at 740.7 cd/m2, indicative of white emission color.

Abstract
In order to explore the differential expression and evolutionary conservation of the genes encoding the cytoskeletal proteins for human epidermal cells, we have constructed a library of bacterial plasmids containing inserts of double-stranded cDNAs complementary to the mRNAs of cultured human epidermal cells. Cloned hybrid plasmids containing 45-95% of the sequences present in keratin, actin, and tubulin mRNAs were isolated and characterized. To identify the cDNAs encoding the four major keratins of human epidermal cells, the clones were initially screened for their ability to hybridize strongly with 32P-labeled cDNA prepared from unfractionated epidermal mRNA (about 30% keratin mRNA). Strongly hybridizing clones were further characterized by positive hybrid selection. Two distinct classes of clones were identified: One class hybridized specifically to the 56 and 58kd keratin mRNAs and one class hybridized specifically to the 46 and 50kd keratin mRNAs. Each class is encoded by a separate multigene family of about 10 genes. The two classes of sequences are conserved throughout vertebrate evolution, indicating the functional importance of each class in filament assembly. Clones containing human cDNA sequences encoding a cytoplasmic actin and alpha-tubulin were selected by hybridization screening using 32P-labeled cloned cDNAs for the mRNAs of beta-actin and alpha-tubulin of embryonic chick brain. The identity of these clones was established by positive hybrid selection and by DNA sequence analysis. Similar to the keratins, the actins and tubulins are also encoded by multigene families which are highly evolutionarily conserved. The availability of cloned cDNAs specific for each of three types of epithelial cytoskeletal proteins allows us to investigate the coordinate expression of their mRNAs during terminal differentiation in human epidermis.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that bovine subcutaneous preadipocytes promote adipogenic gene expression in muscle satellite cells in a co-culture system. Herein we hypothesize that saturated fatty acids would promote adipogenic/lipogenic gene expression, whereas mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids would have the opposite effect. Bovine semimembranosus satellite cells (BSC) and intramuscular preadipocytes (IPA) were isolated from crossbred steers and cultured with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS)/Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) and 1% antibiotics during the 3-d proliferation period. After proliferation, cells were treated for 3 d with 3% horse serum/DMEM (BSC) or 5% FBS/DMEM (IPA) with antibiotics. Media also contained 10 μg/mL insulin and 10 μg/mL pioglitazone. Subsequently, differentiating BSC and IPA were cultured in their respective media with 40 μM palmitic, stearic, oleic, or linoleic acid for 4 d. Finally, BSC and IPA were single- or co-cultured for an additional 2 h. All fatty acid treatments increased (p = 0.001) carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 beta (CPT1β) gene expression, but the increase in CPT1β gene expression was especially pronounced in IPA incubated with palmitic and stearic acid (6- to 17- fold increases). Oleic and linoleic acid decreased (p = 0.001) stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) gene expression over 80% in both BSC and IPA. Conversely, palmitic and stearic acid increased SCD gene expression three fold in co-cultured in IPA, and stearic acid increased AMPKα gene expression in single- and co-cultured BSC and IPA. Consistent with our hypothesis, saturated fatty acids, especially stearic acid, promoted adipogenic and lipogenic gene expression, whereas unsaturated fatty acids decreased expression of those genes associated with fatty acid metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was conducted to compare the expression patterns of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and proteins induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) and resection at a high-volume single institution. METHODS First, 663 liver transplant recipients with HCC were selected. They were divided into hepatitis B virus (HBV) (n = 628) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) groups (n = 35). Their medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Second, another cohort of 2709 patients who underwent HCC resection included 2258 HBV, 143 HCV, and 308 non-HBV non-HCV (NBNC) patients. RESULTS In the transplantation group, pretransplantation AFP level >20 ng/mL was observed in 42.5% of HBV patients and 60% of HCV patients (P = .042). PIVKA-II level >40 mAU/mL was observed in 30.6% of HBV patients and 42.9% of HCV patients (P = .127). In the resection group, a preoperative AFP level >20 ng/mL was observed in 51.7% of HBV patients and 43.3% of HCV patients (P = .052). PIVKA-II level >40 mAU/mL was observed in 59.7% of HBV patients and 56.6% of HCV patients (P = .47). Preoperative AFP level >20 ng/mL and PIVKA-II level >40 mAU/mL were observed in 35.7% and 61% of NBNC patients, respectively. Receiver-operator characteristic curve analyses revealed that the expression pattern of PIVKA-II in patients with elevated AFP level was not predictable and vice versa, regardless of background liver diseases. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that serum AFP and PIVKA-II may be expressed variably regardless of the types of background liver disease. Further large-volume multicenter studies are needed to evaluate the possibility of the etiology-dependent expression of tumor markers.

Abstract
AIM Right retroesophageal lymph nodes (RRLNs) should be involved in central lymph nodes (CLNs) dissection in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). This study assessed the incidence and factors related to RRLNs metastasis. METHODS From January 2008 to March 2010, 129 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with CLNs dissection including RRLNs were enrolled. The predictive value of RRLNs metastasis was assessed. RESULTS Twenty six (20.1%) of 129 patients exhibited nodal metastasis in RRLNs. Metastasis of RRLNs was associated with large tumor size (>1 cm; P<0.01), multiplicity (P=0.03), preoperative LN enlargement (P<0.01), metastasis of non-retroesophageal lateral LN (P<0.01) and large number of CLNs metastases (P<0.01) in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis revealed that tumor size (>1 cm) and metastasis of non-retroesophageal lateral LN were independent correlates of RRLNs metastases. CONCLUSION RRLNs may be removed during operation for PTC, particularly in patients with tumor >1 cm and lateral LN metastases.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the ability of granulated coal ash (GCA), a byproduct of coal thermal electric power stations, to remove hydrogen sulfide from organically enriched sediments, a pilot study was carried out at oyster farming sites, where sediments were enriched with oyster feces and dead oysters. Concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the interstitial water of the sediment decreased to nearly zero in both experimental sites, whereas it remained over 0.2mg/l in the control site. Concentration of acid volatile sulfide (AVS) in the sediment also decreased significantly in both experimental sites, while remained over 0.4 mg/g in the control site. Increases were observed in both the number of benthic microalgae species and the individual number of benthic animals in the surface sediments. This may have been due to the decrease in hydrogen sulfide.

Abstract
Physiologic bioengineering of the oral, dental, and craniofacial complex requires optimized geometric organizations of fibrous connective tissues. A computer-designed, fiber-guiding scaffold has been developed to promote tooth-supporting periodontal tissue regeneration and functional restoration despite limited printing resolution for the manufacture of submicron-scaled features. Here, we demonstrate the use of directional freeze-casting techniques to control pore directional angulations and create mimicked topographies to alveolar crest, horizontal, oblique, and apical fibers of natural periodontal ligaments. For the differing anatomic positions, the gelatin displayed varying patterns of ice growth, determined via internal pore architectures. Regardless of the freezing coordinates, the longitudinal pore arrangements resulted in submicron-scaled diameters (~50 µm), along with corresponding high biomaterial porosity (~90%). Furthermore, the horizontal + coronal ([Formula: see text]) freezing orientation facilitated the creation of similar structures to major fibers in the periodontal ligament interface. This periodontal tissue-mimicking microenvironment is a potential tissue platform for the generation of naturally oriented ligamentous tissues consistent with periodontal ligament neogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The prevalence of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) in patients with bronchial asthma remains unknown. We evaluated the roles of various laboratory tests in the diagnosis of ABPA, including, skin prick test (SPT) for Aspergillus fumigatus (Af), and serum Af specific IgE and IgG antibody measurement. METHODS A total of 50 asthma patients with more than 1000cell/μL of peripheral blood eosinophils were prospectively collected between January 2007 and September 2011. Evaluations using SPT for Af, serum total IgE and specific IgE antibody to Af by CAP system, IgG antibody to Af by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or CAP system were performed according to the essential minimal criteria for the diagnosis of ABPA - asthma, immediate cutaneous reactivity to Af, elevated total IgE, and raised Af specific IgE and IgG. RESULTS Among 50 patients, three patients (6.0%) were diagnosed as ABPA, of whom each confirmed five items of the essential minimal diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of ABPA. Six patients (12.0%) showed negative responses to Af in SPT, but positive responses in specific IgE by CAP system. Eight patients (16.0%) showed negative responses to IgG to Af by CAP system, but positive responses by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). CONCLUSIONS SPT and serum IgE to Af measurement by CAP system should be performed simultaneously. It is reasonable to set up cut-off values in Af specific IgE/IgG by CAP system for the differentiation of ABPA from Af sensitised asthma patients.
