Abstract
The Siwei Shaoyao Decoction possesses a marked effect on the alleviation of trigeminal neuralgia in rats caused by penicillin G potassium injection. As shown from the hot-plate test, it also has an obvious analgesic effect on mice. To some extent, the decoction has a significant anti-inflammatory effect on the acute edema in hind paws of rats and the effect is believed to be related to the reduction of capillary permeability.

Abstract
RAPD markers were used to determine the level of heterozygosity transmitted via 2n gametes from V. darrowi selection Florida 4B (Fla 4B) to inter-specific hybrids with tetraploid V. corymbosum cv Bluecrop. The tetraploid hybrid US 75 was found to contain about 70% of Fla 4B's heterozygosity, a value attributed to a first-division restitution (FDR) mode of 2n gamete production. Crossovers during 2n gamete formation were evidenced by the absence of 16 dominant alleles of Fla 4B in US 75, and direct tests of segregation in a diploid population involving Fla 4B. RAPD markers that were present in both Fla 4B and US 75 were used to determine the mode of inheritance in a segregating population of US 75xV. corymbosum cv Bluetta. Thirty-one duplex loci were identified which segregated in a 5∶1 ratio, indicating that US 75 undergoes tetrasomic inheritance.

Abstract
A better understanding is needed to explain the mechanism of therapeutic effect of combined use of tetradrine-PVNO and tetradrine-QOHP which play very important roles in treatment of silicosis. Blood prolidase (PLD), monamine oxidase (MAO) and plasminogen (PLG) in silicotic rats after treatment with tetradrine-PVNO or tetradrine-QOHP were measured. The values obtained were compared with the untreated silicotic rats. It was found that the silicotic rats that received tetradrine-PVNO showed significant increase in PLD and decrease in PLG, but no significant change in MAO. The PLD in plasma of silicotic rats that received tetradrine-QOHP were elevated significantly, but PLG and MAO did not change appreciably. These findings suggest that the combined use of tetradrine-PVNO and tetradrine-QOHP can accelerate the degradation of collagen in silicotic rats.

Abstract
The EBNA transcription unit which is active in Epstein-Barr virus-immortalized latently infected B lymphocytes covers approximately 60% of the 172-kb genome. Since the genome exists as a circular double-stranded DNA molecule in latently infected cells, it is conceivable that complete copies are made during transcription. Rather than attempt to detect gigantic RNA molecules directly, we used RNA-PCR to detect incorporation of leader exons into mRNA in a shuffled order. The downstream U leader exon was detected spliced upstream of the internal repeat leader exons W1 and W2 in the polyadenylated RNA fraction of spontaneous lymphoblastoid cell lines, restricted phenotype BL cell lines Wanyanyi and Wewak2, and in B95-8, Raji, and Akata cells. Quantitative competitive RNA-PCR showed that the ratio of U exon-containing EBNA1 messages to U exon-shuffled leader messages was approximately 10:1, with large variation from cell line to cell line, and was not affected by induction of the lytic cycle in B95-8, Raji, or Akata cells. Messages with shuffled exons contained only the C2W1 alternative splice, which does not produce an initiator AUG methionine codon for EBNA4 gene expression. The results provide evidence for long-range exon skipping and imply that genome-length transcripts may occur and participate in viral gene expression in latency.

Abstract
The results of our experiments showed that the 5'-terminal sequences of 23S rRNAs can be used to distinguish different genera of actinomycetes, including the genera Streptomyces, Micromonospora, Amycolatopsis, and Saccharomonospora. There are small differences (< 1%) among the sequences of some strains belonging to the genera Streptomyces (two strains) and Saccharomonospora (seven strains). On the basis of the results of morphological and biochemical analyses, strain 9022 belongs in the genus Saccharomonospora; however, there are distinct differences in the cell wall compositions and the 5' termini of the 23S rRNA sequences of this strain and members of the genus Saccharomonospora. Hence, strain 9022 cannot be classified in the genus Saccharomonospora.

Abstract
In this study of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latency, the polymerase chain reaction was used in modified form for amplification and detection of viral mRNA sequences in peripheral blood lymphocytes from healthy seropositive adults. Six known promoters for latent gene expression and eight known gene products were identified in in vitro-immortalized lymphocytes and in the cell lines established spontaneously from seropositive adults. We examined whether mRNA expression in uncultured B cells from four seropositive adults was the same as that which occurred in spontaneously established EBV-positive B-cell lines from the same individuals. A minimum of 17 polymerase chain reaction targets was required to circumscribe the known latent mRNA structures. Expression of the C promoter for the EBNA genes was detected in B-cell RNA from three of the four subjects. Transcripts initiated from the alternative W promoter for EBNA expression were not detected. The spliced transcripts detected in the B cells contained only the C2-to-W1 alternative splice, which was nonproductive for EBNA4 gene expression. None of the other EBNA open reading frames were detected spliced onto the 3' ends of the C promoter-initiated RNAs. Spliced RNA from the TP gene was detected in all four subjects. Expression of the TP gene was restricted to TP1 promoter-initiated RNAs, as no TP2 promoter-initiated transcripts were detected. Expression of RNA from the LMP gene was not detected. The F promoter which is active in the restricted expression latency that occurs in Burkitt's lymphoma cells was not detected being expressed in peripheral blood B cells. This pattern of latent gene expression is unique to uncultured B cells, indicating that there are profound differences between viral latent states in vitro and in situ and suggesting a central role for the TP gene in the latency of EBV.

Abstract
Activity was recorded from physiologically identified baroreceptor or chemoreceptor fibers in carotid sinus nerves of urethane-anesthetized spontaneously breathing rabbits. A carotid sinus area was vascularly isolated so that carotid sinus pressure and perfusion medium (Locke's solution or rabbit blood) could be controlled. The cervical sympathetic, vagus, and aortic depressor nerves were bilaterally cut to eliminate vagal and cardiopulmonary reflexes. Baroreceptor fibers could be divided into two groups: fibers with a mean firing threshold of 47.6 +/- 1.9 mm Hg and no activity below this threshold (37 fibers) and fibers that were active at low intrasinus pressures (18.1 +/- 2.2 impulses/sec at an intrasinus pressure of 0 mm Hg). The baroreceptor fibers that were spontaneously active at low pressures were also chemically sensitive: discharge rate was increased by 5-hydroxytryptamine (10 fibers, p less than 0.01), nicotine (10 fibers, p less than 0.01), or hypercapnia (13 fibers, p less than 0.001). The activity of baroreceptor fibers with a clear pressure threshold was usually decreased by hypercapnia (26 of 27 fibers, from 18.8 +/- 3.1 to 13.2 +/- 3.9 impulses/sec). Chemoreceptor fibers failed to respond to intrasinus pressure changes from 0 to 100 mm Hg (n = 25 fibers, p greater than 0.5) but were sensitive to chemical changes, as expected. Thus, there is a subset of baroreceptor fibers that, under certain conditions, is spontaneously active at very low intrasinus pressures and responds to changes in the chemical milieu.

Abstract
Substance P (SP) is abundant in the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) and has been implicated in baro- and chemoreceptor reflexes. We examined the effect of SP on blood pressure, heart rate, phrenic nerve activity, hindlimb perfusion pressure, and cardiac contractile strength in urethane-anesthetized rabbits with bilaterally cut cervical sympathetic, vagus, and aortic depressor nerves. Retrograde simultaneous injection of SP (0.5-2.7 micrograms/kg in 0.2-0.3 ml saline) into both carotid sinus areas via the internal carotid arteries decreased blood pressure (by 56%), heart rate (by 13%), cardiac contractility (by 25%) and phrenic nerve activity (by 77%). The effect on hindlimb perfusion pressure was variable. There was both a reflex effect and direct hindlimb vasodilation. In another group of rabbits, the carotid sinus areas were vascularly isolated and perfused with SP (0.19 micrograms/min dissolved in Locke's solution) or Locke's solution alone for 5 min. While carotid sinus perfusion pressure was maintained in the range of 80-120 mmHg, mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, and unit activity from the CSN were recorded. SP increased the activity of 11 of 18 baroreceptor fibers and inhibited all of 20 chemoreceptor fibers. SP decreased mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate, but the changes were less than those obtained with injection of SP into nonisolated carotid sinus arteries because systemic effects of SP, which in some cases counteracted the reflex effects, were eliminated.

Abstract
Although discharge of many sympathetic nerves decreases substantially on transection of the spinal cord in cats, firing of splenic and mesenteric postganglionic nerves continues unabated (R. L. Meckler and L. C. Weaver, Brain Res. 338: 123-135, 1985; R. D. Stein and L. C. Weaver. J. Physiol. Lond. 396: 155-172, 1988). Therefore, ongoing sympathetic outflow directed to the splanchnic circulation was proposed to be less dependent on supraspinal excitatory drive than that directed to other vascular beds. Blockade or transection of cervical spinal pathways in chloralose-anesthetized cats significantly decreased firing of gastric, hepatic, adrenal, and lumbar chain sympathetic nerves. Discharge of gastric and hepatic nerves decreased as much as that of adrenal and lumbar chain nerves; therefore, sustained discharge in the absence of bulbospinal excitation is not a characteristic of all sympathetic nerves innervating the splanchnic circulation. In contrast, discharge of the preganglionic greater splanchnic nerves was not decreased after spinal transection, although it changed from a rhythmic to an asynchronous pattern. This provocative finding suggests that rhythmicity of preganglionic discharge may be important for effective synaptic transmission to some postganglionic neurons, since postganglionic gastric, hepatic, and adrenal nerve firing decreased in the presence of sustained but asynchronous preganglionic input.

Abstract
To understand whether quantitative measurement of minimal coronary luminal diameter is a better method than percent diameter narrowing for assessing the functional impairment of myocardial contractility produced by coronary artery stenoses, measurements were made from 37 stenotic segments in 27 patients with coronary artery disease and from corresponding segments in 10 subjects without coronary artery narrowing. An assessment of the reliability of the 2 types of measurements was made by correlating them with the physiologic parameters of both segmental wall motion and global ejection fraction response induced by atrial pacing. Digitally acquired coronary angiograms were used to facilitate quantitative analysis. Measurements by edge detection and videodensitometry correlated closely (r = 0.94). Percent diameter narrowing correlated moderately with the change in ejection fraction (r = -0.41) or with the change in segmental wall motion (r = -0.44). The measurement of minimal lumen diameter correlated with the change in global ejection fraction (r = 0.61) and did so even better with the change in segmental wall motion (r = 0.78, p less than 0.05). A minimal lumen diameter of less than or equal to 1.5 mm identified patients likely to have a functional impairment during atrial pacing as assessed by either global ejection fraction or segmental wall motion defects. We conclude that minimal coronary luminal diameter provides a better method than percent diameter narrowing calculations to measure the anatomic severity of coronary artery narrowing.

Abstract
Quantitative measurements of coronary stenoses were made from digital coronary angiograms in 19 patients before and after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). Two methods of measurement were compared. Mean stenosis before PTCA was 67 +/- 10% by the edge detection method and 67 +/- 12% by videodensitometry (difference not significant). After PTCA, the mean stenosis was 32 +/- 14% by edge detection and 30 +/- 13% by videodensitometry (difference not significant). In addition, a new method was developed to rapidly calculate the absolute minimum luminal area and diameter by videodensitometry. The minimum luminal diameter before PTCA was 1.0 +/- 0.5 mm and after PTCA increased to 2.4 +/- 0.5 mm (p less than 0.001). The validity of the videodensitometric method was analyzed in a series of Lucite phantom studies, which suggested that when there is an irregular angiographic appearance, the densitometric method may be more accurate than standard edge detection methods. Digital acquisition of coronary angiograms provides a means for rapid application of quantitative analysis during coronary interventional procedures.
