A systematic review and meta-analysis of abnormalities in hematological and biochemical markers among Bangladeshi COVID-19 cases

Background and Aims

Abnormalities in hematological and biochemical markers are assumed to be associated with the progression of COVID-19 disease. This meta-analysis was performed to assess the consequences of abnormalities of biomarkers (D-dimers, C-reactive protein [CRP], serum ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], random blood sugar [RBS], absolute neutrophil count [ANC], neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), serum creatinine, and hemoglobin) in the Bangladeshi COVID-19 patients.

Methods

The data of biomarker levels in Bangladeshi COVID-19 patients were gathered from five databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Bangladesh Journals Online between January 2020 to March 2022. Review Manager 5.4 was used for the meta-analysis, and Egger's test and Begg-Mazumdar's rank correlation were used to investigate publication bias.

Results

This study included 1542 patients with 567 severe and 975 nonsevere statuses. Based on the accumulated data synthesis, there is a strong correlation between disease severity and different biomarkers, including D-dimer, CRP, ferritin, LDH, RBS, NLR, and serum creatinine (MD = 1.16, p = 0.0004; MD = 22.97, p = 0.003; MD = 419.26, p < 0.00001; MD = 118.37, p = 0.004; MD = 1.96, p = 0.02; MD = 1.26, p = 0.02; and MD = 0.31, p = 0.008, respectively). A significantly decreased correlation was observed for hemoglobin levels in severe COVID-19 patients (MD = -0.73, p = 0.10).

Conclusion

The elevated biomarkers level was noticed in severe cases compared to nonsevere patients, revealing that D-dimer, CRP, ferritin, LDH, RBS, NLR, and serum creatinine are significantly correlated to COVID-19 severity. Only lower hemoglobin level was found to be associated with COVID-19 severity.

Elevated Levels of Pleiotropic Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10) are Critically Involved With the Severity and Mortality of COVID-19: An Updated Longitudinal Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review on 147 Studies

Objectives

Disruption in the natural immune reaction due to SARS-CoV-2 infection can initiate a potent cytokine storm among COVID-19 patients. An elevated level of IL-6 and IL-10 during a hyperinflammatory state plays a vital role in increasing the risk of severity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential of circulating IL-6 and IL-10 levels as biomarkers for detecting the severity and mortality of COVID-19.

Methods

This study was conducted according to the Cochrane Handbook and PRISMA guidelines. Authorized databases were searched to extract suitable studies using specific search terms. RevMan 5.4 was applied for performing the meta-analysis. Mean differences in IL-6 and IL-10 levels were calculated among COVID-19 patients via a random-effects model. NOS scoring, publication bias and sensitivity analyses were checked to ensure study quality.

Results

A total of 147 studies were selected, with 31 909 COVID-19 patients under investigation. In the severity analysis, the mean concentration of IL-6 was significantly higher in the severe COVID-19 cases than in the non-severe cases (MD: 19.98; P < .001; 95% CI: 17.56, 22.40). Similar result was observed for IL-10 mean concentration in severe COVID-19 cases (MD: 1.35; P < .001; 95% CI: 0.90, 1.80). In terms of mortality analysis, circulating IL-6 showed sharp elevation in the deceased patients (MD: 42.11; P < .001; 95% CI: 36.86, 47.36). IL-10 mean concentration was higher in the dead patients than in the survived patients (MD: 4.79; P < .001; 95% CI: 2.83, 6.75). Publication bias was not found except for comparing IL-6 levels with disease severity. Sensitivity analysis also reported no significant deviation from the pooled outcomes.

Conclusions

Elevated levels of circulating IL-6 and IL-10 signifies worsening of COVID-19. To monitor the progression of SARS-CoV-2 infection, IL-6 and IL-10 should be considered as potential biomarkers for severity and mortality detection in COVID-19.

Preparation of Highly Stable and Electrochemically Active Three-dimensional Interconnected Graphene Frameworks from Jute Sticks

Over the past few years, the environmentally friendly synthesis of nanomaterials, including graphene using green chemistry, has attracted tremendous attention due to its easy handling, low cost, and biocompatibility. Here we demonstrate a facile and efficient green synthesis route for producing highly stable and electrochemically active three-dimensional interconnected graphene frameworks (3DIGF) from jute sticks. Initially, jute sticks derived three-dimensional amorphous activated carbon nanosheets (3DAACNs) were prepared at low temperatures (i.e., 850 °C) in an inert environment. The resultant 3DAACNs were then heat treated at a high temperature (i.e., 2700 °C) under an inert environment, resulting in 3DIGF. The prepared carbonaceous materials were fully characterized, and various experimental techniques confirmed the preparation of 3DIGF. The prepared 3DIGF shows a highly stable nature in thermal and chemical environments and demonstrates a highly dynamic nature for the electrooxidation of sulfide. This study could be considered a vital contribution towards the economic and simple approach for preparing 3DIGF from biomass.

The role of ABCB1 gene polymorphisms in steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome: Evidence from a meta-analysis of steroid-receiving patients

Previous studies in nephrotic syndrome have shown that three common variants in the ABCB1 gene, including rs1128503, rs2032582, and rs1045642, change the expression and activity of ABCB1, which may be responsible for the drug resistance. However, as a result of the inconclusive outcomes of these studies, we performed a meta-analysis to validate the association between ABCB1 polymorphisms and the susceptibility of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). The association was evaluated by calculating the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval. A total of 12 studies containing 1,463 subjects (514 steroid-resistant and 949 steroid-sensitive) were included. Single nucleotide polymorphism rs1128503 showed a significant association with SRNS (p < 0.05) only in the allele model (OR = 1.40) in Africans. A statistically significant association was found for rs2032582 in codominant 2, dominant, recessive, and allele models (OR = 1.85, 1.52, 1.38, and 1.34, respectively). Subgroup analysis revealed that rs2032582 showed a significant correlation with SRNS in codominant 1, 2, dominant, over-dominant, and allele models in Africans (OR = 3.22, 3.52, 3.29, 1.74, and 1.83, respectively). In the case of rs1045642, codominant 1 (OR = 0.72) and recessive models (OR = 1.34) revealed a significant correlation with SRNS. Again, codominant 1 (OR = 0.58), dominant (OR = 0.69), and over-dominant models (OR = 0.62) showed a protective effect in Asians. Haplotype analysis showed that the TGC haplotype is associated with a 1.83, 1.77, and 2.17 times significant correlation in overall, Asian, and African populations, respectively. By contrast, the CGC haplotype showed a 0.69 and 0.57 times lower association in the overall and African populations, respectively. The CTC haplotype also showed a 1.79 times enhanced susceptibility for SRNS in the overall population. Our study suggests that ABCB1 polymorphisms are associated with SRNS development, especially in Africans and Asians.

Potential Applications of Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and their Derivatives

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a novel class of porous extended crystalline structures, are favored in different fields of heterogeneous catalysis, CO₂ separation and conversion, and energy storage (supercapacitors) due to their convenience of synthesis, structural tailor-ability, tunable pore size, high porosity, large specific surface area, devisable structures, and adjustable compositions. Nickel (Ni) is a ubiquitous element extensively applied in various fields of catalysis and energy storage due to its low cost, high abundance, thermal and chemical stability, and environmentally benign nature. Ni-based MOFs and their derivatives provide us with the opportunity to modify different properties of the Ni center to improve their potential as heterogeneous catalysts or energy storage materials. The recent achievements of Ni-MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts, membrane materials for CO₂ separation and conversion, electrode materials and their respective performance have been discussed in this review.

Pyroptosis in acute pancreatitis and its therapeutic regulation

Pyroptosis defines a new type of GSDMs-mediated programmed cell death, distinguishes from the classical concepts of apoptosis and necrosis-mediated cell death and is prescribed by cell swelling and membrane denaturation, leading to the extensive secretion of cellular components and low-grade inflammatory response. However, NLRP3 inflammasome activation can trigger its downstream inflammatory cytokines, leading to the activation of pyroptosis-regulated cell death. Current studies reveal that activation of caspase-4/5/11-driven non-canonical inflammasome signaling pathways facilitates the pathogenesis and progression of acute pancreatitis (AP). In addition, a large number of studies have reported that NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent pyroptosis is a crucial player in driving the course of the pathogenesis of AP. Excessive uncontrolled GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis has been implicated in AP. Therefore, the pyroptosis-related molecule GSDMD may be an independent prognostic biomarker for AP. The present review paper summarizes the molecular mechanisms of pyroptotic signaling pathways and their pathophysiological impacts on the progress of AP. Moreover, we briefly present some experimental compounds targeting pyroptosis-regulated cell death for exploring novel therapeutic directions for the treatment and management of AP. Our review investigations strongly suggest that targeting pyroptosis could be an ideal therapeutic approach in AP.

Catalase C262T genetic variation and cancer susceptibility: A comprehensive meta-analysis with meta-regression and trial sequential analysis

Background

Several genetic association studies have analyzed the link between the catalase ( CAT) C262T variant and different cancers, but the findings remain controversial. Our research centered on establishing a comprehensive correlation between the C262T variant and different cancers.

Methods

This study was conducted using RevMan 5.4 software following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. For this meta-analysis, 53 case-control studies (18,258 cases and 47,476 controls) were chosen.

Results

The analysis revealed that three genetic models were statistically linked ( P < 0.05) to overall cancer susceptibility in codominant model 2 (COD2): odds ratio (OR) = 1.16, COD3: OR = 1.21, recessive model (RM): OR = 1.20). After stratification by ethnicity, a significant link ( P < 0.05) was found in Caucasians (COD2: OR = 1.18, COD3: OR = 1.17, over-dominant model (ODM): OR = 1.19) and Asians (COD3: OR = 1.49). Subgroup analyses revealed a significant correlation ( P < 0.05) with blood-and-bone-marrow-related cancer, skin cancer, gastrointestinal-tract-related cancer, prostate cancer, and gynecologic cancer. Three genetic models in population-based controls (COD2: OR = 1.19, COD3: OR = 1.17, RM: OR = 1.19) and two genetic models in hospital-based controls (COD3: OR = 1.40, RM: OR = 1.24) were found to be significantly correlated ( P < 0.05) with cancer. Also, three genetic models for polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (COD3: OR = 1.46; RM: OR = 1.34, ODM: OR = 0.80) and three models for MALDI-TOF + MassARRAY (COD2: OR = 1.32, RM: OR = 1.26, allele model: OR = 1.14) genotyping methods showed significant association ( P < 0.05) with cancer. The meta-regression showed that the quality scores might be a source of significant heterogeneity under the COD2 model (coefficient = 0.176, P = 0.029). Trial sequential analysis also validated the adequacy of the sample size on overall findings.

Conclusion

Our results indicate that CAT C262T variant is associated with overall cancer susceptibility, especially in Caucasians and Asians. This variant may also be associated with blood-and-bone-marrow-related, GIT-related, prostate, skin, and gynecological cancers.

Propagation of age‐related diseases due to the changes of lipid peroxide and antioxidant levels in elderly people: A narrative review

Background and Aims

Lipid peroxidation end products are the major culprit for inducing chronic diseases in elderly people. Along with the elevated level of lipid peroxide biomarkers, there is a significant disruption of antioxidants balance, which combinedly propagate the diseases of elderly people. The aim of the present review is to bridge the connection of changes in lipid peroxides biomarkers and antioxidants level with age‐associated diseases in elderly people.

Methods

This narrative review was performed following a comprehensive search for suitable articles in multiple online databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect using selected search terms. The most appropriate literature was included based on the selection criteria.

Results

From the review, it is found that many age‐related diseases propagated with an increased level of the end products of lipid peroxide and reduced levels of antioxidants in elderly people. When the end products of lipid peroxidation increase in the body, it creates oxidative stress, which ultimately leads to many complicated diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular and neurogenic diseases, and many other chronic inflammatory diseases. The oxidative stress induced by peroxidation can be assessed by different lipid peroxide end products such as malondialdehyde, oxidized low‐density lipoprotein, isoprostanes, neuroprostanes, lipoperoxides, oxysterols (7‐ketocholesterol, 7β‐hydroxycholesterol), and many more.

Conclusions

This study definitively answers the correlation between the changes in lipid peroxides and antioxidants level and age‐related diseases. Our narrative article recommends future investigations for elucidating the mechanisms rigorously to establish a compact correlation.

Optical Chemical Sensing of Iodide Ions: A Comprehensive Review for the Synthetic Strategies of Iodide Sensing Probes, Challenges, and Future Aspects

Among several anions, iodide (I^- ) ions play a crucial role in human biological activities. In it's molecular form (I₂ ), iodine is utilized for several industrial applications such as syntheses of medicines, fabric dyes, food additives, solar cell electrolytes, catalysts, and agrochemicals. The excess or deficiency of I^- ions in the human body and environmental samples have certain consequences. Therefore, the selective and sensitive detection of I^- ions in the human body and environment is vital for monitoring their overall profile. Amongst various analytical techniques for the estimation of I^- ions, optical-chemical sensing possesses the merits of high sensitivity, selectivity, and utilizing the least amount of sensing materials. The distinctive aims of this manuscript are (i) To comprehensively review the development of optical chemical sensors (fluorescent & colorimetric) reported between 2001-2021 using organic fluorescent molecules, supramolecular materials, conjugated polymers, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). (ii) To illustrate the design and synthetic strategies to create specific binding and high affinity of I^- ions which could help minimize negative consequences associated with its large size and high polarizability. (iii) The challenges associated with sensitivity and selectivity of I^- ions in aqueous and real samples. The probable future aspects concerning the optical chemical detection of I^- ions have also been discussed in detail.

Link of BIN1, CLU and IDE gene polymorphisms with the susceptibility of Alzheimer's disease: evidence from a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative disorder. The association of BIN1, CLU and IDE genetic polymorphisms with AD risk have been evaluated overtimes that produced conflicting outcomes.

OBJECTIVE

We performed this meta-analysis to investigate the contribution of BIN1 (rs744373 and rs7561528), CLU (rs11136000 and rs9331888), and IDE (rs1887922) polymorphisms to AD risk.

METHODS

From a systemic literature search up to July 15, 2021, we included 25 studies with rs744373, 16 studies with rs7561528, 37 studies with rs11136000, 16 studies with rs9331888, and 4 studies with rs1887922. To analyze the correlation, we constructed seven genetic models that used odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals. We used RevMan 5.4 for meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Our study suggests that BIN1 rs744373 is associated with a significantly increased risk of AD in five genetic models (OR>1). Again, CLU rs11136000 showed reduced association in all genetic models (OR<1). CLU rs9331888 revealed an increased association in two models (OR>1). The IDE rs1887922 showed significantly increased risk in four models (OR>1). From subgroup analysis, a significantly increased risk of AD was observed in Caucasians and Asians for BIN1 rs744373. Again, BIN1 rs7561528 showed a significantly enhanced risk of AD only in Caucasians. CLU rs11136000 showed significantly reduced risk in Caucasians but rs9331888 showed increased risk in the same ethnicity.

CONCLUSION

Our meta-analysis confirms the association of BIN1 rs744373, CLU rs9331888 and IDE rs1887922 polymorphisms with an increased risk of AD, especially in Caucasians. Again, CLU rs11136000 is associated with reduced AD risk in the overall population and Caucasians.

Antibiogram of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase and AmpC Beta- Lactamase Producing Escherichia coli among the Patients Attending a Selected Tertiary Health Care Hospital

Background: The global emergence and spread of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) and AmpC beta-lactamases (AmpC) producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) have become a global concern because of inducing resistance toward most of the antimicrobial classes and making the treatment difficult. Hence, this study was aimed to assess the prevalence and antibiotic resistance pattern of ESBL and AmpC beta-lactamases producing E. coli in Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences (BIHS) General Hospital. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of ESBL +ve and AmpC +ve producing E. coli and to see their antibiotic resistance pattern in BIHS General Hospital. Materials and Methods: A total of 675 samples were subjected to aerobic bacteriologic culture in the department of Microbiology, BIHS General Hospital, Mirpur, Dhaka, during the period of 1st July 2016 to 30th June 2017. Specimens were collected from hospitalized and outdoor patients of different age and sex groups. All the isolates were identified by standard microbiological technique and their antibiotic susceptibility was observed by disk diffusion method. Strict aseptic precautions were taken all through the culture system. Results: Out of 675 specimens, 150 (22.22%) culture yielded growth of E. coli. Among them 47 (31.3%) were ESBL +ve, 27 (18%) were AmpC +ve and 7 (4.7%) were both AmpC +ve and ESBL +ve E. coli. Conclusion: Advance antibiotic resistance surveillance is necessary to guide the appropriate and judicious antibiotic use. Date-Leaf Carbon Particles for Green Enhanced Oil Recovery

Green enhanced oil recovery (GEOR) is an environmentally friendly enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process involving the injection of green fluids to improve macroscopic and microscopic sweep efficiencies while boosting tertiary oil production. Carbon nanomaterials such as graphene, carbon nanotube (CNT), and carbon dots have gained interest for their superior ability to increase oil recovery. These particles have been successfully tested in EOR, although they are expensive and do not extend to GEOR. In addition, the application of carbon particles in the GEOR method is not well understood yet, requiring thorough documentation. The goals of this work are to develop carbon nanoparticles from biomass and explore their role in GEOR. The carbon nanoparticles were prepared from date leaves, which are inexpensive biomass, through pyrolysis and ball-milling methods. The synthesized carbon nanomaterials were characterized using the standard process. Three formulations of functionalized and non-functionalized date-leaf carbon nanoparticle (DLCNP) solutions were chosen for core floods based on phase behavior and interfacial tension (IFT) properties to examine their potential for smart water and green chemical flooding. The carboxylated DLCNP was mixed with distilled water in the first formulation to be tested for smart water flood in the sandstone core. After water flooding, this formulation recovered 9% incremental oil of the oil initially in place. In contrast, non-functionalized DLCNP formulated with (the biodegradable) surfactant alkyl polyglycoside and NaCl produced 18% more tertiary oil than the CNT. This work thus provides new green chemical agents and formulations for EOR applications so that oil can be produced more economically and sustainably.

Measurement of Bone Mineral Density in the Transfusion Dependent Thalassemic Patients

Low bone mineral density represents as a major cause of morbidity in thalassemic patient. The mechanism depends upon several factors. Transfusion dependent iron over load cause decrease secretion of growth hormone, insulin, thyroid hormone, parathyroid hormone, sex hormone and vitamin D from different endocrine organs which ultimately causes impairment of adequate bone mass achievement. Other causes of low bone mass are iron chelating agent and bony expansion due to increase erythropoiesis. To find out the frequency of low bone mineral density in thalassemia patients who are transfusion dependent. This study was designed as a cross sectional observational study, which was analyzed in the Department of Haematology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka and National Institution of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) from September 2017 to August 2018. It had been performed over total 72 (Age ≥06 years to ≤40 years) thalassaemic patients who are transfusion dependent. Presence of bone diseases was detected by Bone mineral density (BMD). Seventy-two (72) patients with transfusion dependent thalassaemia, aged 6 to 39 years were enrolled. Mean age of patients was 20.9±7.2 years. Among them, 57(79.2%) patients were detected as a normal bone mineral density and fifteen (20.8%) patients were detected as a low bone mineral density in the left femoral neck. In transfusion dependent thalassaemic patient, Low bone mass was significantly associated with low BMI, total number of blood transfusion and serum ferritin level remarkably. This survey has established a new path for early detection of low bone mass and helped in prevention of bone loss and its sequel by starting early treatment in these groups of patients.

Assessment of membrane stability, central nervous system depressant, and gut motility effects of Lablab purpureus seeds

Introduction: Lablab purpureus, under the family of Fabaceae, is a plant with various pharmacological activities. The present study was aimed to investigate the phytoconstituents, membrane stabilizing activity, central nervous system (CNS) depressant potential, and gastrointestinal (GI) motility of the methanol extract of L. purpureus seeds (MELPS).Methods: The methanol plant extract was screened for different phytochemical groups. Mice were classified into four groups for in vivo activities. Group-I was designated as negative control and received distilled water (10 mL/kg body weight); group-II served as positive control and received diazepam (1 mg/kg body weight). Group-III and group-IV both were experimental groups and received plant extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight, respectively.Results: Alkaloids, carbohydrates, saponins, glycosides, tannins, phenols, flavonoids, and proteins were found after phytochemical analysis. On hypotonic solution-induced hemolysis of erythrocyte membrane, MELPS9 (9 mg/mL) resulted in the highest percentage of inhibition (60.51 ± 0.889), and on heat-induced hemolysis, MELPS9 (9 mg/mL) resulted in the highest percentage of inhibition (33.97 ± 0.21). In the case of the CNS depressant potential experiment, mice that received a sample at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight showed the highest result (54.40 ± 4.51) compared with the positive control (14.2 ± 3.70) (P < 0.001). Similarly, 400 mg/kg dose sample exhibited the highest percentage of inhibition (60.51 ± 0.889) of hemolysis and GI motility (22.26%).Conclusion: It can be concluded that the MELPS has potential membrane stability, CNS depressant, and antimotility effects.

Recent Advancements in Electrochemical Deposition of Metal-Based Electrode Materials for Electrochemical Supercapacitors

The demand for energy storage devices with high energy and power densities has increased tremendously in this rapidly growing world. Conventional capacitors, fuel cells, and lithium-ion batteries have been used as energy storage devices for the long term. However, supercapacitors are one of the most promising energy storage devices because of their high specific capacitance, high power density, and longer cycle life. Recent research has focused on synthesizing transition-metal oxides/hydroxides, carbon materials, and conducting polymers as supercapacitor electrode materials. The performance of supercapacitors can be improved by altering electrolytes, electrode materials, current collectors, experimental temperatures, and film thickness. Thousands of papers on supercapacitors have already been published, reflecting the significance and elucidating how much demanding such energy storage devices for this fast-growing generation. This review aims to illustrate the electrode materials loaded on various conductive substrates by electrochemical deposition employed for supercapacitors to provide broad knowledge on synthetic pathways, which will pave the way for future research. We also discussed the basic parameters involved in supercapacitor studies and the advantages of the electrochemical deposition techniques through literature analysis. Finally, future trends and directions on exploring metals/metal composites toward designing and constructing viable, high-class, and even newly featured flexible energy storage materials, electrodes, and systems are presented.

The first combined meta‐analytic approach for elucidating the relationship of circulating resistin levels and RETN gene polymorphisms with colorectal and breast cancer

Background

Evidence suggests that circulating resistin levels are altered in colorectal cancer (CRC) and breast cancer (BC). Again, polymorphisms in resistin-encoding gene RETN have been evaluated in CRC and BC. However, there is a scarcity of data establishing the relationship of resistin and RETN polymorphisms (rs1862513 and rs3745367) with these cancers. This study aimed to analyze the relationship of resistin levels and RETN polymorphisms with CRC and BC in a combined meta-analytic approach.

Main body of the abstract

After a comprehensive online literature search, screening and eligibility check, 41 articles (31 with resistin level and 10 with RETN polymorphisms) were retrieved for meta-analyses. The mean difference (MD) of resistin was calculated and pooled to investigate the effect sizes with a 95% confidence interval (CI), and the connection of genetic polymorphisms was analyzed with an odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI. The analysis showed that resistin level is significantly higher in CRC (MD = 3.39) and BC (MD = 3.91) patients. Subgroup analysis in CRC showed significantly higher resistin in serum (MD = 4.61) and plasma (MD = 0.34), and in BC, a significantly elevated resistin level was reported in premenopausal (MD = 7.82) and postmenopausal (MD = 0.37) patients. Again, RETN rs1862513 showed a significantly strong association with CRC (codominant 1—OR 1.24, codominant 2—OR 1.31, dominant model—OR 1.25, and allele model—OR 1.16) and with BC (codominant 2—OR 1.51, codominant 3—OR 1.51, recessive model—OR 1.51, and allele model—OR 1.21). RETN rs3745367 did not show any association with these cancers.

Short conclusion

Overall, our analysis indicates that higher circulating resistin levels are associated with an elevated risk of CRC and premenopausal and postmenopausal BC. Besides, rs1862513 in RETN gene is significantly connected with both CRC and BC.

Model-based Application for Adsorption of Lead (II) from Aqueous Solution using Low-cost Jute Stick Derived Activated Carbon

Background:

Removal of lead (II) ions from supply water using an inexpensive adsorbent is essential. It is recommended that low-cost adsorbents are developed to effectively remove lead (II) ions from aqueous solutions. The aim of the study is to develop and validate models for predicting the performance of carboxylated jute stick derived activated carbon (JSAC-COOH) in removing lead (II) ions from aqueous solution, which can assist the water supply authorities in supplying lead (II) free drinking water to the communities at a low-cost.

Methods:

Controlled laboratory experiments were conducted following the statistical “Design of Experiments” through varying the factors affecting the performance of JSAC-COOH in removing lead (II) ions. The performance of JSACCOOH was investigated for different concentrations of lead (II) ions (range: 50 - 500 mg/L) at variable experimental conditions (temperature: 15°C and 27°C; pH: 4.0 and 7.0) and time (1, 10, 30 and 60 min). Several models (Linear and non-linear) were investigated and validated for predicting the concentrations of lead (II) ions in aqueous solution.

Results:

The prepared JSAC-COOH had a surface area of 615.3 m2 /g. In 60 min, up to 99.8% removal of lead (II) ions was achieved. Few models showed very good to excellent predictive capabilities with coefficients of determination in the range of 0.85–0.95. The model validation experiments showed the correlation coefficients in the range of 0.84 – 0.98.

Conclusion:

The models have the capabilities to reasonably predict the final concentrations of lead (II) ions, which can be used in controlling the effluent lead (II) ion concentrations. The proposed adsorbent is likely to be low-cost as it was developed using the commonly available agricultural byproduct.

Preparation of Sulfur-doped Carbon for Supercapacitor Applications: A Review

Electrochemical capacitors, also known as supercapacitors (SCs), have lately played an important role in energy storage and conversion systems due to their specific characteristics such as high strength, durability, and environmental friendliness. A wide range of materials is used as electrodes for SC applications because the electrochemical efficiency is primarily determined by the electrode materials used. Carbonaceous materials with unique surface, chemical, electrochemical, and electronic characteristics have become attractive for energy storage research, but they cannot meet the rising need for high specific energy and specific power. Besides, heteroatom-doped carbon materials have shown pseudocapacitance characteristics and improved specific energy, specific power, and conductivity. This makes them more adaptable in SC application. Among different heteroatom doping of carbon, S-doped carbon has gained considerable attention in SC applications due to its unpaired electrons and easily polarizable nature. S-doped carbon materials-based SCs have demonstrated enhanced surface wettability, improved conductivity, and induced pseudocapacitance effect, thereby delivering improved specific energy and specific power. Many reports on S-doped carbon for SC applications have been published, but there is no specific Review on the preparation of S-doped carbon for SC applications. This Review focuses on recent developments in the field of SC electrodes made from S-doped carbon materials. Herein, the preparation methods and applications of S-doped carbon for SCs were summarized following a brief discussion of different electrochemical characterization techniques of SCs. Finally, the challenges of S-doped carbon materials and their potential prospects were discussed to give crucial insights into the favorable factors for future innovations of SC electrodes. This Review aims to provide insight for further research on the preparation of S-doped carbon for electrochemical energy storage applications.

Genetic Polymorphism of miR-218-2 (rs11134527) in Cervical Cancer: A Case-Control Study on the Bangladeshi Women

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of Cervical Cancer (CC) is disproportionately higher in developing countries. It is the second most frequent cancer type among Bangladeshi women and the major cause of morbidity and mortality. However, no previous data reported the association of miR-218-2 gene polymorphisms in Bangladeshi cervical cancer patients.

AIM

This case-control study was designed to find the link between the rs11134527 polymorphism in miR-218-2 and CC.

METHODS

A total of 488 subjects were recruited, comprising 256 cervical cancer patients and 232 healthy females. Genotyping was conducted with the tetra-primer ARMS-PCR technique to detect the association.

RESULTS

The results of genotype data showed that rs11134527 was in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in both CC cases and controls (P >0.05). Overall, the polymorphism was found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer with AG genotype (AG vs. GG: OR = 2.26, 95% Cl = 1.40-3.66, P = 0.0008), AA genotype (AA vs. GG: OR = 3.64, 95% Cl = 2.17-6.10, P <0.0001), dominant model (AG+AA vs. GG: OR = 2.75, 95% Cl = 1.75-4.31, P <0.0001), recessive model (AA vs. GG+AG: OR = 2.08, 95% Cl = 1.41-3.08, P = 0.0002), and A allele (A vs. G: OR = 1.94, 95% Cl = 1.51-2.51, P <0.0001). All of these correlations remained statistically significant after performing Bonferroni correction (P <0.008).

CONCLUSION

Our study suggests that the rs11134527 polymorphism in the miR-218-2 gene contributes to the susceptibility of CC in Bangladeshi women.

Polymorphisms in IL-17A Gene and Susceptibility of Colorectal Cancer in Bangladeshi Population: A Case-Control Analysis

OBJECTIVE

Interleukin-17A (IL-17A) genetic polymorphisms are associated with multiple cancer types, including colorectal cancer (CRC). However, no previous study was performed in the Bangladeshi population to evaluate the association. Our study aimed to find the association between two IL-17A variants (rs10484879 C/A and rs3748067 G/A) and susceptibility of CRC.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

This retrospective case-control study comprised 292 CRC patients and 288 age, sex, and BMI matched healthy volunteers. Genotyping of both variants was done by the tetra-primer ARMS-PCR method, and the results were analyzed by the SPSS software package (version-25.0).

RESULTS

Logistic regression analysis indicated that in case of IL-17A rs10484879 polymorphism, AC and AA genotype carriers showed 2.44- and 3.27-times significantly increased risk for CRC development (OR = 2.44, P = .0008 and OR = 3.27, P = .0133, individually). A significant association was also observed for AC + AA genotype (OR = 2.58, P = .0001). Again, over-dominant and allelic model revealed statistically significant link to CRC risk (OR = 2.13, P = .0035 and OR = 2.22, P = .001). For rs3748067 polymorphism, AG and AA genotype carriers showed 2.30- and 2.45-times enhanced risk for CRC (OR = 2.30, P = .005 and OR = 2.45, P = .031). A statistically significant association was also observed for AG + AA genotype (OR = 2.35, P = .001), over-dominant model (OR = 2.05, P = .014), and allelic model (OR = 2.11, P = .0004).

CONCLUSION

This study highlights that IL-17A rs10484879 and rs3748067 polymorphisms may be associated with CRC development. However, further functional research with larger samples may reveal more statistically significant outcomes.
