Abstract
We examined the intrinsic signals in response to grating stimuli in order to determine whether the light-evoked intrinsic signals of the retina are due to changes in the photoreceptor activities induced by the image projected on to the retina or are due to neural activities of the inner retina. The retinas of the left eye of 12 cats under general anesthesia were examined by a functional imaging fundus camera. Near infrared light was used to monitor the reflectance changes (RCs) of the retina. Vertical grating were used to stimulate the retina at 4 Hz. The spatial frequencies of the gratings were 0.05, 0.11, 0.22, 0.43, 0.86, 1.73, and 3.46 cycles/degree (cpd). Ten images were averaged and used to analyze the RCs to obtain the peak value (PV) of a two dimensional fast Fourier transfer of the RCs. The wavefront aberrations (WA) were measured with a compact wavefront aberrometer and the spatial modulation transfer function (MTF) of the eye was calculated. The retinal reflectance image had a grating pattern. The PV of the spatial sensitivity curve was highest at low spatial frequencies (0.05 and 0.11 cpd), and the sensitivity decreased steeply with an increase in the spatial frequency. RCs were not detectable at 3.46 cpd. The MTF decreased gradually with increases in the spatial frequencies and was 0.68 at 3.46 cpd. The reflectance pattern of the retinal intrinsic signal elicited by grating stimuli of different spatial frequencies was different from that of the MTF. This suggests that the intrinsic signal represents not only the response of the photoreceptors but also other neuronal or vascular changes in the retina.

Abstract
An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, (Λ)(7)He, was observed for the first time with the (e, e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV. This resolution is the best reported to date for hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. The (Λ)(7)He binding energy supplies the last missing information of the A = 7, T = 1 hypernuclear isotriplet, providing a new input for the charge symmetry breaking effect of the ΛN potential.

Abstract
Membrane fouling needs to be mitigated for widespread use of membrane bioreactors (MBRs). It has been pointed out that particles with small sizes found in supernatants (sub-micron particles) of mixed liquor suspensions of MBRs are important in the evolution of membrane fouling of this technology. However, information on characteristics of sub-micron particles in MBRs is still insufficient. In this study, a pilot-scale MBR treating municipal wastewater was used to investigate and characterize sub-micron particles in an MBR and to identify the size fraction(s) responsible for irreversible fouling in an MBR. It was clearly shown that characteristics of sub-micron particles in the MBR varied considerably depending on their sizes. Results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis and monosaccharide analysis suggested that irreversible fouling in this study was mainly caused by the specific size fraction of 0.1-0.45 μm, which was close to the size of micropores of the membrane used. Pore plugging might explain this to some extent.

Abstract
We present the case of an 81-year-old man with primary clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of the pubic bone with an associated aggressive clinical course. The patient's laboratory tests showed marked leukocytosis, elevated levels of C-reactive protein and multiple cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). Histological examination showed monomorphic small cells predominantly arranged as a diffuse sheet with morphological features of a small round cell tumor (SRCT). Immunohistochemical staining indicated that the tumor cells were positive for HMB45, S100, Melan A, IL-6, IL-6 receptor, G-CSF, and G-CSF receptor and negative for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3) and epithelial membrane antigen. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of aggressive primary CCS of the pubic bone with features of SRCT showing the production and co-expression of multiple cytokines and their receptors. Thus, we suggest that proliferation through an IL-6- and G-CSF-associated autocrine mechanism may play an important role in the aggressive clinical course and poor prognosis of some CCSs showing features of SRCT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Volumetry may be useful for evaluating treatment response and prognosis of intraocular lesions. Phantom, volunteer, and patient studies were performed to determine whether ocular MR volumetry is reproducible. MATERIALS AND METHODS Half-Fourier single-shot RARE and FSPGR sequences at 1.5T with a 76-mm-diameter surface coil were optimized to obtain still ocular images. Volumetry accuracies of each sequence were compared with simulated subretinal phantom volumes. Ocular volumetry was performed in 15 volunteers twice in 1 week by using contiguous axial images of the globes while the subjects stared at a target, and images were acquired in 2 seconds before the subjects were instructed to blink, with this process repeated as necessary. Imaging, intraobserver, and interobserver reproducibility for volumes of the whole eyeball and anterior chamber were assessed. Ocular volumetry was also performed in 6 patients with intraocular tumors before and after treatment. RESULTS The phantom study demonstrated that measurement error rates with RARE were significantly lower than with FSPGR (P<.01). The volunteer study demonstrated excellent imaging and intraobserver reproducibility of RARE volumetry for whole eyeballs and anterior chambers (P<.01). Although no interobserver differences were observed in anterior chamber volume measurement (P=.33), there was a significant difference between the 2 observers in eyeball volume measurement (P<.01). Follow-up volumetric data were useful for treatment decisions in all patients. CONCLUSIONS Ocular volumetry from contiguous ultrafast RARE images obtained during visual fixation is feasible in volunteer and patient studies and is superior to FSPGR images.

Abstract
Although the involvement of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in the development of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in HIV patients and transplant recipients has been reported, it is still controversial whether CMV itself can cause TMA. We report herein a rare case with rapid improvement of TMA by ganciclovir treatment in a patient who is neither HIV-positive nor a transplant recipient, suggesting a pathogenic role for CMV in TMA.

Abstract
The interaction of phenothiazine neuroleptics with α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and desialylated AGP (asialoAGP) has been investigated by fluorescence, circular dichroism spectroscopy and by equilibrium dialysis. The binding parameters of phenothiazines obtained from fluorescence agreed closely with those obtained from circular dichroism and equilibrium dialysis. The binding affinities (nK) to AGP were slightly higher than binding affinities to asialoAGP. Attempts to correlate binding affinities with partition coefficients suggested that hydrophobic forces were mainly involved in the binding of phenothiazine neuroleptics to AGP and asialoAGP. However, electrostatic interaction was also found to be involved as suggested by experimental data obtained from the influence of oleic acid and caesium chloride on the drug binding to the two proteins.

Abstract
Wide resection of tumours in the anterior compartment of the thigh frequently requires en bloc removal of the quadriceps femoris muscle. Such resection can result in significantly decreased muscle power of knee extension. Functional muscle transfer is a beneficial tool for the reconstruction process. Until now, however, there have been few reports on the outcome of quadriceps muscle reconstruction using free innervated muscle transfer. We reviewed 14 patients (seven women and seven men, mean age 53 years). The extent of tumour invasion required resection of the entire quadriceps in four cases, of three heads in six cases and of two heads in the remaining four cases. Local recurrence occurred in one patient only, and there were no major complications. In the four patients with entire resection of the quadriceps, the postoperative muscle manual test (MMT) result was 0-1 (mean, 0.5), but this recovered to between 2 and 3 (mean 2.3) after a mean follow-up of 70 months. In the six cases with resection of three heads, the MMT test result was 2 and active knee extension recovered almost fully. Transfer of free, functional latissimus dorsi muscle is best indicated for cases in which the entire quadriceps or three heads are resected. Active knee extension can be expected to improve to an MMT score of 2 after reinnervation of the transferred muscle. Microsurgical reconstruction following resection of soft-tissue sarcoma provides adequate functional and coverage reconstruction, together with better local control by allowing wider surgical margins.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe effect of ambient gases on degradation and rejuvenation of ZnO varistors was investigated from the viewpoint of voltage-current characteristics. Ambient oxygen gas suppressed increases in the leakage current during ac biasing, while it rejuvenated degraded samples. The time dependence of rejuvenation indicated that ion migrations, possibly the desorption and adsorption of oxygen ions at the grain boundaries, occur reversibly in degradation and rejuvenation. Moreover, a noticeable difference was observed between V–I curve shapes after ac biasing in nitrogen and in oxygen atmospheres.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe production of foamed aluminum has long been considered difficult to realize because of such problems as the low foamability of molten metal, the varying size of cellular structures, solidification shrinkage and so on. Recently these problems have been solved by a number of researches and some manufacturers produce foamed aluminum by their own methods. We have been employing a batch casting process and manufacturing foamed aluminum under the tradename ALPORAS® since 1986. This paper presents the manufacturing process, physical properties and some typical applications of ALPORAS.

Abstract
We present new data on electron scattering from a range of nuclei taken in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. For heavy nuclei, we observe a rapid falloff in the cross section for x>1, which is sensitive to short-range contributions to the nuclear wave function, and in deep inelastic scattering corresponds to probing extremely high momentum quarks. This result agrees with higher energy muon scattering measurements, but is in sharp contrast to neutrino scattering measurements which suggested a dramatic enhancement in the distribution of the "superfast" quarks probed at x>1. The falloff at x>1 is noticeably stronger in 2H and 3He, but nearly identical for all heavier nuclei.

Abstract
In this study, the fouling potentials of polysaccharides contained in mixed liquor suspension in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating municipal wastewater were investigated using lectin affinity chromatography. This investigation was carried out with different membranes to assess the effects of membrane materials on fouling potentials of polysaccharides. In lectin affinity chromatography, some polysaccharides with high affinity to the lectin in the column can be retained in the column. The fouling potentials of the retained polysaccharides were evaluated by dead-end filtration test. Degree of reduction in fouling potential differed considerably when different lectins were used in affinity chromatography indicating that fouling potentials of polysaccharide differed depending on types of polysaccharide. Trends in the reduction of fouling potential were different depending on membrane materials. Characteristics of the organic matter associated with polysaccharides removed by lectins were investigated by means of excitation-emission matrices (EEM). The results of EEM analysis indicate that the characteristics of the organic matter eluted from different lectins were different as long as elution reagents for the lectin were different. Characteristics of the organic matter eluted from the lectins which have the same elution reagent were similar in terms of shapes of EEM fluorescence spectra. However, the trends in reduction of fouling potentials could not be explained by the characteristics of organic matter assessed by EEM analysis. On the basis of the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that characteristics of membrane and structures or properties of sugar chain would play an important role in determining fouling potentials.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the impact of membrane properties on membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor (MBR). Membrane fouling was divided into two categories: physically reversible and irreversible fouling. Membrane properties related to each type of membrane fouling were investigated separately. Five microfiltration (MF) and one ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with different properties (pore size, contact angle, roughness, zeta potential, and pure water permeability) were examined with a laboratory-scale MBR, fed with synthetic wastewater. Two separate experiments were conducted: the first to examine physically reversible fouling, and the second to examine physically irreversible fouling. The correlation between the degree of each type of fouling and membrane properties was studied. High correlation was observed between the degree of physically reversible fouling and roughness (R(2)=0.96). In contrast, with regard to physically irreversible fouling, strong correlation between roughness and degree of membrane fouling can only be found in the case of MF membranes. Except for the membrane with the highest roughness, the degree of physically irreversible fouling can be well correlated with pure water permeability (lower pure water permeability results in higher degree of physically irreversible fouling) including UF membrane. On the basis of the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that roughness is an important factor in determination of physically reversible fouling regardless of the types of membrane (i.e. MF or UF membranes) and evolutions of physically irreversible fouling can be mitigated when an MBR is operated with membranes with smooth surface and high pure water permeability.

Abstract
An experimental study of the (16)O(e,e'K(+))(Lambda)(16)N reaction has been performed at Jefferson Lab. A thin film of falling water was used as a target. This permitted a simultaneous measurement of the p(e,e'K(+))Lambda, Sigma(0) exclusive reactions and a precise calibration of the energy scale. A ground-state binding energy of 13.76+/-0.16 MeV was obtained for (Lambda)(16)N with better precision than previous measurements on the mirror hypernucleus (Lambda)(16)O. Precise energies have been determined for peaks arising from a Lambda in s and p orbits coupled to the p(1/2) and p(3/2) hole states of the (15)N core nucleus.

Abstract
PURPOSE Some have suggested that the criteria for weight loss surgery in adolescents be stricter than those currently recommended for adults by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The aim of the current study is to define the characteristics of adolescents who meet NIH consensus criteria for bariatric surgery in adults to determine their level of morbidity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey 2000-2004, children designated as meeting NIH criteria were 13 to 17 years of age with (1) a body mass index >or=40 or (2) a body mass index >35, and one or more comorbidity. We contrasted surgery candidates with noncandidates. We examined items that comprise a screener for identifying children with special health care needs. The Columbia Impairment Scale (CIS) was used to assess child functioning. RESULTS There were 134 children identified as candidates for bariatric surgery and 4736 noncandidates in the same age range. Candidates were more likely to have special health care needs (36% vs 23%) and more likely to have a CIS above 16 (34% vs 16%). Candidates for weight loss surgery were 2.36 times as likely to have a CIS score of 16 or higher and 1.87 times as likely to be identified as a child with special health care needs (P <or= .001). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that adolescents who meet NIH consensus criteria for weight loss surgery in adults require specialized health services and have functional impairment. Thus, we advocate the use of the standard adult criteria defined by the NIH as the initial screening requirements so that enhanced access to weight loss surgery for morbidly obese adolescents may be achieved.

Abstract
Membrane water transport is an essential event not only in the osmotic cell volume change but also in the subsequent cell volume regulation. Here we investigated the route of water transport involved in the regulatory volume decrease (RVD) that occurs after osmotic swelling in human epithelial Intestine 407 cells. The diffusion water permeability coefficient (Pd) measured by NMR under isotonic conditions was much smaller than the osmotic water permeability coefficient (Pf) measured under an osmotic gradient. Temperature dependence of Pf showed the Arrhenius activation energy (Ea) of a low value (1.6 kcal/mol). These results indicate an involvement of a facilitated diffusion mechanism in osmotic water transport. A mercurial water channel blocker (HgCl(2)) diminished the Pf value. A non-mercurial sulfhydryl reagent (MMTS) was also effective. These blockers of water channels suppressed the RVD. RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry demonstrated predominant expression of AQP3 water channel in this cell line. Downregulation of AQP3 expression induced by treatment with antisense oligodeoxynucleotides was found to suppress the RVD response. Thus, it is concluded that AQP3 water channels serve as an essential pathway for volume-regulatory water transport in, human epithelial cells.
