Abstract
Although the prophylaxis in controlling sterility within the operating room environment has been greatly improved, implant-associated infection is still one of the most serious complications in implant surgeries due to the existence of immune depression in the peri-implant area. The antibacterial ability of materials themselves logically becomes an important factor in preventing implant-associated infections. With the understanding of the pathogenesis of implant-associated infections, many approaches have been developed through providing an anti-adhesive surface, delivering antibacterial agents to disrupt cell-cell communication and preventing bacteria aggregation or biofilm formation, or killing bacteria directly (lysing the cell membrane). In this article, we review the current strategies in improving the antibacterial ability of materials to prevent implant infection and further present promising tactics in materials design and applications.

Abstract
Many materials with varied characteristics have been used for water purification and separation applications. Recently discovered graphene oxide (GO), a two-dimensional derivative of graphene has been considered as a promising membrane material for water purification due to its excellent hydrophilicity, high water permeability, and excellent ionic/molecular separation properties. This review is focussed on the possible versatile applicability of GO membranes. It is also known that selective reduction of GO results in membranes with a pore size of ∼0.35 nm, ideally suited for desalination applications. This article presents the applicability of graphene-based membranes for multiple separation applications. This is indeed the first review article outlining a comparison of GO and r-GO membranes and discussing the suitability for applications based on the porosity of the membranes. Abstract
Objective:In order to improve diagnostic accuracy, we study the characteristics of two dimensional ultrasound and shear wave elastography in the diagnosis of false negative or false positive thyroid nodules by shear wave elastography.Method:One hundred and eighty-nine nodules in 189 consecutive patients who had been determined by surgical operation and pathology. Conventional ultrasound features and SWE elasticity imaging characteristics and properties of the final postoperative pathology were recorded. A comparative study between true and false results of quantitative SWE elasticity imaging, and the corresponding conventional ultrasound nodule characteristics were compared.Result:Postoperative pathology showed 189 nodules, 74(39.2%) were benign and 115(60.8%) were malignant. The sensitivity, specificity of conventional ultrasound in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules were 56.5% and 81.1% respectively, and those of SWE were 60.9% and 85.1%. The false positive rate of shear wave elastography in diagnosing benign nodules and the false negative rate of malignant nodules were 14.9% and 39.1%, respectively. The false negative rate was higher than the false positive rate. A vertical growth (P< 0.01) and smaller diameter of the masses were significantly associated with false SWE findings (P< 0.01).Conclusion:The SWE imaging has important significance for differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules, but false results are inevitable, which requires clinicians conjunction with other test results to prevent errors judgment when reviewing the SWE imaging.

Abstract
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is widely used as an antioxidant, and previous studies have suggested that it may have potential as an alternative therapeutic strategy for the treatment of patients with autism. However, the exact effects of NAC administration on the development of autism, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying its actions, have yet to be fully elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of NAC on the oxidative status of rats in a valproic acid (VPA)‑induced model of autism, and to examine the involvement of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway in the actions of NAC. Rats exposed to VPA were monitored for behavioral changes, and oxidative stress indicators and key molecules of the canonical Wnt pathway were investigated using colorimetric and western blot analysis, respectively. The present results demonstrated that NAC ameliorated repetitive and stereotypic activity in autism model rats. Furthermore, NAC was revealed to relieve oxidative stress, as demonstrated by the increased glutathione and reduced malondialdehyde levels compared with VPA‑treated rats. However, NAC did not appear to affect the activity of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway. The present findings suggested that the beneficial effects of NAC in autism may be associated with its antioxidative properties, and may not be mediated by the canonical Wnt pathway. However, it may be hypothesized that the canonical Wnt pathway can be indirectly regulated by NAC through the activation of other signaling pathways or upstream factors. Taken together, the present study has contributed to the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the actions of NAC in autism, suggesting its potential for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with autism.

Abstract
AIM Increasing evidence demonstrates that circadian clock proteins are important regulators of physiological functions including blood pressure. An established risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease is the absence of a blood pressure dip during the inactive period. The goal of the present study was to determine the effects of a high salt diet plus mineralocorticoid on PER1-mediated blood pressure regulation in a salt-resistant, normotensive mouse model, C57BL/6J. METHODS Blood pressure was measured using radiotelemetry. After control diet, wild-type (WT) and Per1 (KO) knockout mice were given a high salt diet (4% NaCl) and the long-acting mineralocorticoid deoxycorticosterone pivalate. Blood pressure and activity rhythms were analysed to evaluate changes over time. RESULTS Blood pressure in WT mice was not affected by a high salt diet plus mineralocorticoid. In contrast, Per1 KO mice exhibited significantly increased mean arterial pressure (MAP) in response to a high salt diet plus mineralocorticoid. The inactive/active phase ratio of MAP in WT mice was unchanged by high salt plus mineralocorticoid treatment. Importantly, this treatment caused Per1 KO mice to lose the expected decrease or 'dip' in blood pressure during the inactive compared to the active phase. CONCLUSION Loss of PER1 increased sensitivity to the high salt plus mineralocorticoid treatment. It also resulted in a non-dipper phenotype in this model of salt-sensitive hypertension and provides a unique model of non-dipping. Together, these data support an important role for the circadian clock protein PER1 in the modulation of blood pressure in a high salt/mineralocorticoid model of hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Preventing and reducing allograft rejection play a far more important role in limb allotransplantation. We previously found L6H21 could inhibit LPS-induced (lipopolysaccharide LPS) overexpression inflammatory factors in macrophages and specifically targets to MD-2 (myeloid differential protein-2 MD-2) required for TLR4 (Toll-like receptor 4 TLR4) activation and represented an important therapeutic target in inflammatory disorders. Therefore, we evaluated the effect and explored the mechanism of L6H21 in rats' limb allograft model. MATERIALS AND METHODS The efficacy of L6H21 was evaluated in limb allograft rats and cyclosporine (CY-A) was used as a positive control agent. T-Lymphocyte in blood was analyzed and dendritic cells (DCs) separated from spleens using flow cytometry. ELISA was used to measure serum cytokine levels. Analysis of protein expressions was performed using Western blotting. RESULTS L6H21 reduced the risk of acute rejection and prolonged survival of limb allograft rats. At 3 d and 5 d post-transplant, the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ was decreased in L6H21 group. L6H21 suppressed the content of IL-1α at 7d, IL-5 and IL-10 at both 3 d and 7 d after transplantation. L6H21 decreased the protein expressions of IRF3, p-IRF3, P38, p-P38 and p-IκBα while increased IκBα expression and decreased the ratio of p-IRF3/ IRF3, p-P38/ P38, p-IκBα/IκBα correspondingly. CONCLUSIONS L6H21 could reduce the risk of acute rejection and prolong the survival of limb allograft rats through inhibiting the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in blood and serum cytokine levels and suppressing protein expressions of IRF3, p-IRF3, P38, p-P38 and p-IκBα in DCs. So, it may serve as a potential candidate for the treatment of allograft rejection.

Abstract
Nanotextured surfaces provide an ideal platform for efficiently capturing and emitting light. However, the increased surface area in combination with surface defects induced by nanostructuring e.g. using reactive ion etching (RIE) negatively affects the device's active region and, thus, drastically decreases device performance. In this work, the influence of structural defects and surface states on the optical and electrical performance of InGaN/GaN nanorod (NR) light emitting diodes (LEDs) fabricated by top-down RIE of c-plane GaN with InGaN quantum wells was investigated. After proper surface treatment a significantly improved device performance could be shown. Therefore, wet chemical removal of damaged material in KOH solution followed by atomic layer deposition of only 10 [Formula: see text] alumina as wide bandgap oxide for passivation were successfully applied. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the initially compressively strained InGaN/GaN LED layer stack turned into a virtually completely relaxed GaN and partially relaxed InGaN combination after RIE etching of NRs. Time-correlated single photon counting provides evidence that both treatments-chemical etching and alumina deposition-reduce the number of pathways for non-radiative recombination. Steady-state photoluminescence revealed that the luminescent performance of the NR LEDs is increased by about 50% after KOH and 80% after additional alumina passivation. Finally, complete NR LED devices with a suspended graphene contact were fabricated, for which the effectiveness of the alumina passivation was successfully demonstrated by electroluminescence measurements.

Abstract
Sediments were collected to a depth of 20 cm from urban, rural, and reclamation-affected rivers in the Pearl River Delta of China. In total, 16 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were analyzed in all sediment samples, and the occurrence, possible sources, toxicity, and health risks of OCPs were evaluated to compare the contamination characteristics of OCPs in sediments among the three types of rivers. The results showed that concentrations of Σ16OCPs in sediments from the three rivers followed the order urban river > reclamation-affected river > rural river, with a mean value of 247.21, 232.91, and 114.92 μg/kg, respectively, and the predominant OCPs were hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dieldrin, aldrin, endrin, and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs). Source diagnostics illustrated that there might be recent input of HCHs, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), and endosulfan in some sampling sites. Based on the soil quality thresholds of China, both HCHs and DDTs fell within the range of class II criteria except for some sediment samples in urban rivers with lower levels (below class I criteria). According to sediment quality guidelines, 92.86 % of samples were predicted to be toxic. The health risk assessment showed that OCPs would not pose a threat to people via dermal contact, ingestion, and inhalation, and the followed order of incremental lifetime cancer risks for OCPs in sediment samples was reclamation-affected river > urban river > rural river.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) have been commonly prescribed for depression treatment. However, their effects on blood pressure are unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS Effects on blood pressure of depressive patients in two groups (SSRIs versus placebo and SSRIs versus SNRIs) were evaluated. A search was conducted for double-blind, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in PubMed, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, PsycNET, CCRCT, and DARE (up to March 2017). The outcomes were systolic blood pressure (SBP) changes and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) changes from baseline to endpoint or to a certain period of treatment duration. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% CIs were calculated and pooled using random effects models. The χ2 test and I2 statistics were used to assess heterogeneity. Funnel plots, Begg's test, and Egger's test were used to estimate publication bias. RESULTS A total of 23 RCTs involving 13,285 participants were included. Patients on SSRIs showed no significant differences in blood pressure changes compared with placebo. In the group of SSRIs versus SNRIs, overall SBP changes and DBP changes revealed statistical significances (WMD 1.5 mmHg, 95% CI -2.15, -0.84, Z=4.46, P<0.00001 and WMD 1.34 mmHg, 95% CI -1.92, -0.75, Z=6.18, P<0.00001). Subgroup analyses on treatment duration and age further evidenced these findings. CONCLUSION It was established that SSRIs did not affect blood pressure, while SNRIs led to a modest increase in SBP and DBP with statistical significance compared with SSRIs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of exogenous fibroblast growth factor (FGF)9 on the progression of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (OA). DESIGN The expression of FGF9 in articular cartilage with OA is detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The effects of intra-articular exogenous FGF9 injection on post-traumatic OA induced by the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) surgery are evaluated. Cartilage changes and osteophyte formation in knee joints are investigated by histological analysis. Changes in subchondral bone are evaluated by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). The effect of exogenous FGF9 on an interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-induced ex vivo OA model of human articular cartilage tissues is also evaluated. RESULTS FGF9 expression was down-regulated in articular chondrocytes of OA but ectopically induced at sites of osteophyte formation. Intra-articular injection of exogenous FGF9 attenuated articular cartilage degradation in mice after DMM surgery. Exogenous FGF9 suppressed collagen X and MMP13 expressions in OA cartilage, while promoted collagen II expression. Similar results were observed in IL-1β-induced ex vivo OA model. Intra-articular injection of FGF9 had no significant effect on the subchondral bone of knee joints after DMM surgery, but aggravated osteophyte formation. The expressions of SOX9 and collagen II, and cell proliferation were up-regulated at sites of initial osteophyte formation in mice with exogenous FGF9 treatment. CONCLUSIONS Intra-articular injection of exogenous FGF9 delays articular cartilage degradation in post-traumatic OA, while aggravates osteophyte formation.

Abstract
The performance of belatacept in a real clinical setting has not been reported. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using registry data comparing 1-year clinical outcomes between belatacept- and tacrolimus-treated adult kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) from January 6, 2011, through January 12, 2014. Of 50 244 total patients, 417 received belatacept plus tacrolimus, 458 received belatacept alone, and 49 369 received tacrolimus alone at discharge. In the overall study cohort, belatacept alone was associated with a higher risk of 1-year acute rejection, with the highest rates associated with non-lymphocyte-depleting induction (adjusted hazard ratio 2.65, 95% confidence interval 1.90-3.70, p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in rejection rates between belatacept plus tacrolimus and tacrolimus alone. In KTRs who met inclusion criteria for the Belatacept Evaluation of Nephroprotection and Efficacy as First-line Immunosuppression Trial-Extended Criteria Donors (BENEFIT-EXT), 1-year kidney function was higher with belatacept plus tacrolimus and belatacept alone versus tacrolimus alone (mean estimated GFR 65.6, 60.4 and 54.3 mL/min per 1.73 m2 , respectively; p < 0.001). The incidence of new-onset diabetes after transplantation was significantly lower with belatacept plus tacrolimus and belatacept alone versus tacrolimus alone (1.7%, 2.2%, and 3.8%, respectively; p = 0.01). Despite improved graft function and metabolic complications with belatacept alone, it may be advisable to add short-term tacrolimus in the first year after transplant and to consider lymphocyte-depleting induction in patients with high rejection risk, as the risk-benefit ratio allows.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the clinical feature of familiar hereditary protein S deficiency(HPSD), and to explore the related gene mutations. Methods: A total of seven family members were enrolled in this study and examined during the June to September 2015. Medical histories of the families were analyzed to detect HPSD according to the diagnostic criteria. PROS1 genes of the proband and her family were analyzed. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood. The 15 exons and their intron-exon boundaries of PROS1 were amplified with PCR, and the PCR products were sequenced and analyzed to identify potential mutations. Medical histories from the family members died prior this study were also obtained. Results: Four out of 7 family members of 2 generations were diagnosed as HPSD. The proband suffered from pulmonary embolism, her elder brother suffered from cerebral infarction and her niece suffered from deep vein thrombosis. A missense mutation at the 1063 bp of cDNA(c.1063C>T)was detected in the exon 10 of PROS1, which resulted in arginine 355 to cysteine replacement in the first ball domain of laminin of the protein S(p.R355C). Conclusion: HPSD is an autosomal dominant genetic disease, patients often suffer from recurring vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. A missense mutation(c.1063C>T, p. R355C)of PROS1 was discovered in this Chinese family with HPSD, thus, this mutation might be the genetic basis responsible for these family members with HPSD .

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore the clinical significance of miR-145-5p expression in gastric cancer (GC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Expression of miR-145-5p was evaluated by qRT- PCR in tumor and normal gastric tissues in 145 GC patients. The correlation between the miR-145-5p expression and clinicopathological parameters was investigated. Finally, the survival was assessed by the Kaplan-Meier method and proportional hazards model. RESULTS Expression levels of miR-145-5p in GC tissues were significantly lower than those in adjacent normal tissues (p < 0.001). MiR-145-5p expression was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, metastasis stage, and distant metastasis (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, Patients with low miR-145-5p expression had poorer overall survival time than those with high miR-145-5p expression (p = 0.014). Moreover, univariate and multivariate Cox analysis showed that miR-145-5p was an independent prognostic indicator for OS (p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS MiR-145-5p is down-expressed in GC, and can be used as a marker of poor prognosis in GC patients.

Abstract
CD4+CD25+ T cells are critical for maintenance of immunologic self-tolerance. We measured the number of CD4+CD25+ cells in the patients with primary malignant hypertension related kidney injury, to explore the molecular pathogenesis of this disease. We selected 30 patients with primary malignant hypertension related kidney injury and 30 healthy volunteers. Information on clinical characteristics and laboratory tests was obtained from each subject. The number of CD4+CD25+ cells and glomerular injury were assessed by flow cytometry and histopathology, respectively. Both serum IL-2, IL-4, and IL-6 and endothelial cell markers were analyzed by ELISA. ADAMTS13 antibody was detected by Western blotting. CD4+CD25+ cells were significantly reduced in patients with primary malignant hypertension related kidney injury compared to controls (P < 0.05). The number of CD4+CD25+ cells was negatively related to blood urea nitrogen, serum uric acid, proteinuria, and supernatant IL-4; whereas positively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients. Gradually decreasing CD4+CD25+ cells were also found as increasing renal injury. Additionally, patients exhibited increasing supernatant IL-4, serum IL-2 and IL-6, endothelial cell markers, and anti-ADAMTS13 antibody compared with controls (all P < 0.05). CD4+CD25+ cells may play a key role in the pathogenesis of primary malignant hypertension related kidney injury.

Abstract
High pressure is an effective means for tuning the interparticle distances of nanoparticle (NP) superlattices and thus for modifying their physical properties and functionalities. In this work, we determined the evolution of inter-NP distances of a Pt NP superlattice with increasing pressure using an in situ synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique in a diamond-anvil cell (DAC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the microstructures of pre- and post-compression samples. Our results demonstrate that the evolution of Pt NP assemblies with increasing pressure consists of four stages: (1) ligand elastic response, (2) uniform compression, (3) ligand detachment from NP surfaces, and (4) deviatoric compression of ligands between neighboring NPs. By controlling the magnitudes of applied pressure and deviatoric stress, one can sinter NPs into novel architectures such as nanowires and nanoceramics.

Abstract
After unprecedented development of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells over the past few years, one of the biggest barriers towards their commercialization is the stability of the perovskite material. It is thus important to understand the interaction between the perovskite material and oxygen and/or humidity and the associated degradation process in order to improve device and encapsulation design for better durability. Here we characterize the dynamic aging process in vapour-assisted deposited (VASP) CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite thin films using advanced optical techniques, such as time-resolved photoluminescence and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Our investigation reveals that the perovskite grains grow spontaneously and the larger grains are formed at room temperature in the presence of moisture and oxygen. This crystallization process leads to a higher density of defects and a shorter carrier lifetime, specifically in the larger grains. Excitation-intensity-dependent steady-state photoluminescence shows both N2 stored and aged perovskite exhibit a super-linear increase of photoluminescence intensity with increasing excitation intensity; and the larger slope in aged sample suggests a larger density of defects is generated, consistent with time-resolved PL measurements.

Abstract
Cathepsin K (CTSK) was thought to be a collagenase, specifically expressed by osteoclasts, and played an important role in bone resorption. However, more and more research found that CTSK was expressed in more extensive cells, tissues, and organs. It may not only participate in regulating human physiological activity, but also be closely related to a variety of disease. In this review, we highlight the relationship between CTSK and oral and maxillofacial disorders on the following three aspects: oral and maxillofacial abnormities in patients with pycnodysostosis caused by CTSK mutations, oral and maxillofacial abnormities in Ctsk(-/-) mice, and the role of CTSK in oral and maxillofacial diseases, including periodontitis, peri-implantitis, tooth movement, oral and maxillofacial tumor, root resorption, and periapical disease.

Abstract
CD4+CD25+ cells are critical regulators in almost all of the animal models of human organ-specific autoimmune diseases, transplant rejection and allergic diseases. We aimed to explore the role of CD4+CD25+ cells in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma (MM) related renal impairment (RI). Thirty patients with MM related RI and 30 healthy volunteers were studied. The number of CD4+CD25+ cells was examined by flow cytometry. Clinical and laboratory data were collected from each subject. Glomerular injury was assessed by histopathology. Serum IL-2, IL-4 and IL-6 were analyzed by ELISA. CD4+CD25+ cells significantly decreased in MM related RI patients compared to the controls (P<0.05). CD4+CD25+ cell number was negatively associated with blood urea nitrogen (BUN), supernatant IL-4, serum IL-6, monoclonal immunoglobulin and β2-microglobulin, as well as bone marrow plasma cell percentage and proteinuria; whereas positively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (all P < 0.05). CD4+CD25+ cells gradually decreased as the Clinic Stage increased. The number of CD4+CD25+ cells reduced in MM related RI patients, and was correlated with disease severity. CD4+CD25+ cells may play an important role in the pathogenesis of MM related RI.
