Abstract
We investigated the effects of basicity, sulfate content, and aluminum hydrolyte species on the ability of polyaluminum chloride (PACl) coagulants to remove F-specific RNA bacteriophages from river water at a pH range of 6-8. An increase in PACl basicity from 1.5 to 2.1 and the absence of sulfate led to a reduction of the amount of monomeric aluminum species (i.e., an increase of the total amount of polymeric aluminum and colloidal aluminum species) in the PACl, to an increase in the colloid charge density of the PACl, or to both and, as a result, to high virus removal efficiency. The efficiency of virus removal at around pH 8 observed with PACl-2.1c, a nonsulfated high-basicity PACl (basicity 2.1-2.2) with a high colloidal aluminum content, was larger than that observed with PACl-2.1b, a nonsulfated high-basicity PACl (basicity 2.1-2.2) with a high polymeric aluminum content. In contrast, although extremely high basicity PACls (e.g., PACl-2.7ns, basicity 2.7) effectively removed turbidity and UV260-absorbing natural organic matter and resulted in a very low residual aluminum concentration, the virus removal ratio with PACl-2.7ns was smaller than the ratio with PACl-2.1c at around pH 8, possibly as a result of a reduction of the colloid charge density of the PACl as the basicity was increased from 2.1 to 2.7. Liquid (27)Al NMR analysis revealed that PACl-2.1c contained Al30 species, which was not the case for PACl-2.1b or PACl-2.7ns. This result suggests that Al30 species probably played a major role in virus removal during the coagulation process. In summary, PACl-2.1c, which has high colloidal aluminum content, contains Al30 species, and has a high colloid charge density, removed viruses more efficiently (>4 log10 for infectious viruses) than the other aluminum-based coagulants-including commercially available PACls (basicity 1.5-1.8), alum, and PACl-2.7ns-over the entire tested pH (6-8) and coagulant dosage (0.54-5.4 mg-Al/L) ranges.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We developed a new grip strength measuring device, which considers the time axis, for evaluating muscle contraction in detail in elderly people. OBJECTIVES To present the novel device and preliminary results concerning agility in gripping. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis. PARTICIPANTS One hundred and twenty-one older persons (48 men and 73 women, mean age 74.4 years) referring for memory disorders to the outpatient clinic of our institute. MEASUREMENTS A novel device taking advantage of an industrial force-gauge was developed for measuring gripping performance. The instrument graphically described participants' strength production. Nine indices were derived from four points identified by the graph: 1) starting point ("Go signal"), 2) time when gripping starts, 3) turning point (TP) when the inclination of the curve depicting strength production changes, and 4) peak of strength production. Results obtained from the study sample of older persons were compared (as ratios) to a control group of 30 healthy young adults in their thirties in order to calculate age-related decline rates. Differences between right and left side were compared. RESULTS A significant difference was observed between right and left hands concerning the time to reach peak of strength, and time from TP to strength peak in both men and women. For women, the following indices were also significantly different: time to reach TP, strength at TP, time from TP to strength peak, curve inclination from TP to strength peak, and ratio of TP strength divided by peak strength. CONCLUSION Declines in several indices of gripping agility were measured. The parameters which were more closely related to time than strength itself showed significant differences between right and left hands, especially in women.

Abstract
Hippo signaling plays a crucial role in growth control and tumor suppression by regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. How Hippo signaling is regulated has been under extensive investigation. Over the past three years, an increasing amount of data have supported a model of actin cytoskeleton blocking Hippo signaling activity to allow nuclear accumulation of a downstream effector, Yki/Yap/Taz. On the other hand, Hippo signaling negatively regulates actin cytoskeleton organization. This review provides insight on the mutual regulatory mechanisms between Hippo signaling and actin cytoskeleton for a tight control of cell behaviors during animal development, and points out outstanding questions for further investigations.

Abstract
Chirality--that is, left- or right-handedness--is an important concept in a broad range of scientific areas. In condensed matter, chirality is found not only in molecular or crystal forms, but also in magnetic structures. A magnetic skyrmion is a topologically stable spin vortex structure, as observed in chiral-lattice helimagnets, and is one example of such a structure. The spin swirling direction (skyrmion helicity) should be closely related to the underlying lattice chirality via the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Here, we report on the correlation between skyrmion helicity and crystal chirality in alloys of helimagnets Mn(1-x)Fe(x)Ge with varying compositions by Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and convergent-beam electron diffraction over a broad range of compositions (x = 0.3-1.0). The skyrmion lattice constant shows non-monotonous variation with composition x, with a divergent behaviour around x = 0.8, where the correlation between magnetic helicity and crystal chirality changes sign. This originates from continuous variation of the spin-orbit coupling strength and its sign reversal in the metallic alloys as a function of x. Controllable spin-orbit coupling may offer a promising way to tune skyrmion size and helicity.

Abstract
We investigated the crystal structures of an ordered perovskite-type cobaltate, GdBaCo2O(5+δ) (δ < 0.5), at elevated temperatures by transmission electron microscopy. Above the magnetic ordering temperature, we observed a first-order structural phase transition between the low-temperature tetragonal 3a(p) × 3a(p) and high-temperature orthorhombic 1a(p) × 2a(p) superstructure phases (where a(p) is the perovskite-unit cell). Upon the application of a magnetic field, an incommensurate phase emerges around the structural phase-transition temperature, which indicates a magnetic-field-induced structural phase transition via no magnetic ordering in the ordered perovskite-type cobaltate.

Abstract
Hippo (Hpo) signaling plays a critical role in restricting tissue growth and organ size in both invertebrate and vertebrate animals. However, how the Hpo kinase is regulated during development has not been clearly understood. Using a Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation assay, we have investigated the functional significance of Hpo homo-dimer formation and subcellular localization in living cells. We found that Hpo dimerization and membrane association are critical for its activation in growth inhibition. As dimerization facilitates Hpo to access its binding partner, Hpo kinases in the homo-dimer trans-phosphorylate each other to increase their enzymatic activity. Moreover, loss- and gain-of-function studies indicate that upstream regulators, Expanded, Merlin and Kibra, play a critical role in promoting Hpo dimerization as well as association to the cortical F-actin beneath the plasma membrane. Enforced Hpo localization to the plasma membrane increases Hpo dimerization and activity. Therefore, homo-dimerization and plasma membrane association are two important mechanisms for Hpo activation in growth control during animal development.

Abstract
The relaxation dynamics of an exciton in rubrene was investigated by femtosecond absorption spectroscopy. Exciton relaxation to a self-trapped state occurs via the coherent oscillation with 78 cm(-1) due to a coupled mode of molecular deformations with phenyl-side-group motions and molecular displacements. From the temperature dependence of the decay time of excitons, the energy necessary for an exciton to escape from a self-trapped state is evaluated to be ~35 meV (~400 K). As a result, a self-trapped exciton is stable at low temperatures. At room temperature, excitons can escape from a self-trapped state and, subsequently, they are dissociated to charged species. The exciton dissociation mechanism is discussed on the basis of the results.

Abstract
Fetal fibroblast cell culture from cotyledons of bovine placenta and animal experiments close to term were used to elucidate afterbirth release and factors missing in the signal transduction mechanism for retained fetal membranes (RFM) after delivery. In cell culture the addition of arachidonic acid (Ara) to the medium caused rapid release to free floating cell in the culture dish, accompanied by matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activation, being consistent with previous in vivo observations, where a relation between MMP and fetal membrane release had been shown. Ara-induced cell floating was not inhibited by the addition of cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, and not induced by the addition of PGF2α or PGE2 to replace Ara, while 12-lipoxygenase (12-LOX) metabolite of Ara, 12-oxo-eicosatetraenoic acid (12-oxoETE), strongly induced cell floating. In the animal experiments, 12-oxoETE injection to delivery-induced cows (n = 6) using prostaglandin (PG) and dexamethazone resulted in rapid release of fetal membranes. In cows with natural calf delivery, a 12-oxoETE peak (11.7-16.8 ng/ml) was observed in maternal blood plasma prior to release of fetal membranes. This investigation thus gives new indications for that the mediator for fetal membrane release is 12-oxoETE and not PG.

Abstract
The skyrmion, a vortex-like spin-swirling object, is anticipated to play a vital role in quantum magneto-transport processes such as the quantum Hall and topological Hall effects. The existence of the magnetic skyrmion crystal (SkX) state was recently verified experimentally for MnSi and Fe(0.5)Co(0.5)Si by means of small-angle neutron scattering and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. However, to enable the application of such a SkX for spintronic function, materials problems such as a low crystallization temperature and low stability of SkX have to be overcome. Here we report the formation of SkX close to room temperature in thin-films of the helimagnet FeGe. In addition to the magnetic twin structure, we found a magnetic chirality inversion of the SkX across lattice twin boundaries. Furthermore, for thin crystal plates with thicknesses much smaller than the SkX lattice constant (as) the two-dimensional SkX is quite stable over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields, whereas for quasi-three-dimensional films with thicknesses over as the SkX is relatively unstable and observed only around the helical transition temperature. The room-temperature stable SkX state as promised by this study will pave a new path to designing quantum-effect devices based on the controllable skyrmion dynamics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined the association between diabetes-related factors and pathology of Alzheimer disease (AD) to evaluate how diabetes affects the pathogenic process of AD. METHODS This study included specimens from a series of 135 autopsies of residents of the town of Hisayama in Fukuoka prefecture (74 men and 61 women) performed between 1998 and 2003, who underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test in clinical examinations in 1988. We measured diabetes-related factors including fasting glucose, 2-hour post-load plasma glucose, fasting insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in 1988. Neuritic plaques (NPs) were assessed according to the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease guidelines and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) were assessed according to Braak stage. The associations between each factor and AD pathology were examined by analysis of covariance and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Higher levels of 2-hour post-load plasma glucose, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR were associated with increased risk for NPs after adjustment for age, sex, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, body mass index, habitual smoking, regular exercise, and cerebrovascular disease. However, there were no relationships between diabetes-related factors and NFTs. Regarding the effects of APOE genotype on the risk of AD pathology, the coexistence of hyperglycemia and APOE epsilon4 increased the risk for NP formation. A similar enhancement was observed for hyperinsulinemia and high HOMA-IR. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that hyperinsulinemia and hyperglycemia caused by insulin resistance accelerate NP formation in combination with the effects of APOE epsilon4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The significance of home blood pressure (BP) measurement in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) has not been well investigated. We aimed to test the hypotheses that home BP is more closely associated with target-organ damage than clinic BP, and that the presence of prediabetes/T2DM enhances the impact of home BP measurement. METHODS We studied 551 hypertensives (99 diabetics and 452 nondiabetics) whose self-measured systolic BP (SBP) was >135 mm Hg while on medication. The subjects were followed for 6 months after allocation to either a control group or an active treatment group. The changes in clinic BP and home BP were analyzed in relation to the changes in the spot urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UAR). RESULTS The extent of clinic and home BP reduction was similar between the diabetic and nondiabetic groups. The change in UAR in nondiabetics was significantly associated with the extent of SBP reduction in the clinic (r = 0.19), morning (r = 0.33), and evening (r = 0.22, all P < 0.01). In contrast, in the diabetic group, the change in UAR was significantly associated with the changes in morning SBP (r = 0.23, P = 0.02) and evening SBP (r = 0.39, P < 0.001), but not with clinic BP. The correlation with evening SBP in the diabetic group tended to be stronger than the nondiabetic group. CONCLUSIONS In hypertensives with prediabetes/T2DM, changes in home BP were better than changes in clinic BP to predict changes in UAR. In particular, this suggests the hypothesis that aggressive control of evening home BP might be equally or more important to morning BP in hypertensives with prediabetes/T2DM.

Abstract
Norovirus (NV) is an important human pathogen that causes epidemic acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Because of the lack of a cell culture system or an animal model for this virus, studies of drinking water treatment such as separation and disinfection processes are still hampered. We successfully estimated NV removal performance during a coagulation-rapid sand filtration process by using recombinant NV virus-like particles (rNV-VLPs) morphologically and antigenically similar to native NV. The behaviors of two widely accepted surrogates for pathogenic waterborne viruses, bacteriophages Qbeta and MS2, were also investigated for comparison with that of rNV-VLPs. Approximately 3-log(10) removals were observed for rNV-VLPs with a dose of 40 muM-Al or -Fe, as polyaluminum chloride at pH 6.8 or ferric chloride at pH 5.8, respectively. Smaller removal ratios were obtained with alum and ferric chloride at pH 6.8. The removal performance for MS2 was somewhat larger than that for rNV-VLPs, meaning that MS2 is not recommended as an appropriate surrogate for native NV. By comparison, the removal performance for Qbeta was similar to, or smaller than, that for rNV-VLPs. However, the removal performances for rNV-VLPs and Qbeta differed between the coagulation process and the following rapid sand filtration process. Therefore, Qbeta also is not recommended as an appropriate surrogate for native NV.
