Abstract
Contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) is a major cause of morbidity, and increased costs as well as an increased risk of death. This study was evaluated effects of exogenous sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC) administration on CIN in rats. Eight animals were included in each of the following eight groups: control, control phosphate-buffered solution (PBS), control SPC 2, control SPC 10, CIN, CIN PBS, CIN SPC 2 and CIN SPC 10. The induced nephropathy was created by injected with 4 g iodine/kg body weight. SPC was administered 3 d at a daily two different doses of 2 μm/mL and 10 μm/mL intraperitoneally. The severity of renal injury score was determined by the histological and immunohistochemical changes in the kidney. Malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined to evaluate the oxidative status in the renal tissue. Treatment with 2 and 10 μM SPC inhibited the increase in renal MDA, NO levels significantly and also attenuated the depletion of SOD in the renal injuryCIN. These data were supported by histopathological findings. The inducible nitric oxide synthase positive cells and apoptotic cells in the renal tissue were observed to be reduced with the 2 and 10 μM SPC treatment. These findings suggested that 2 and 10 μM doses can attenuate renal damage in contrast nephropathy by prevention of oxidative stress and apoptosis. The low and high dose SPC may be a promising new therapeutic agent for CIN.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study's aim was to investigate the effect of melatonin in terms of mitigating the effects of smoking on the laryngeal mucosa of rats exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. DESIGN Rats were divided into four groups: Melatonin + Smoking group exposed to smoke with melatonin; Smoking group exposed to smoke without melatonin; Saline group not exposed to smoke without melatonin; Melatonin group not exposed to smoke with melatonin. CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were evaluated in plasma and tissues. Tissues were also examined the changes of squamous hyperplasia, keratosis, parakeratosis and epithelial hyperplasia by light microscope and the ultrastructural changes by electron microscope. RESULTS Tissue SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities were significantly higher in Saline and Melatonin groups than Melatonin + Smoking and Smoking groups. Plasma CuZn-SOD and CAT activities were significantly higher in Saline and Melatonin groups than Smoking group. Plasma GSH-Px showed no significant difference. The rate of epithelial hyperplasia was significantly higher in Smoking group than the other groups. The rate of parakeratosis was significantly higher in Smoking group than the other groups. The epithelial cells in Melatonin + Smoking group displayed, normal cell structure similar to those in Saline group under electron microscope. CONCLUSIONS The study shows that smoking induces substantial pathological changes in the laryngeal mucosa and melatonin may have some beneficial effects in partially reversing smoking-induced laryngeal injury by inducing the expression of antioxidants; biochemical and histological outcomes also support these findings due to preventing tissue damage in laryngeal mucosa exposed to smoke.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study was proposed to examine the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS), and to compare these parameters with healthy controls. We also compared the possible association of the circulating levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, and VEGF with cardiovascular risk factors in patients with MetS. We also compared the possible association of the circulating levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, and VEGF with cardiovascular risk factors in patients with MetS. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 45 patients with MetS and 17 healthy controls with a body mass index (BMI) less than 25 kg/m2 were enrolled in the study. Plasma MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, and VEGF levels were determined using ELISA. RESULTS TIMP-1,-2, MMP-2,-9 levels were significantly higher in patients with MetS compared with healthy controls (p < 0.001). Carotid intima-media thickness and serum VEGF levels were found to be significantly increased (p < 0.01, p < 0.05 respectively) in MetS compared with healthy controls. According to the ROC curves, TIMP-1 levels were both sensitive (93.3%) and specific (81.2%). CONCLUSIONS We observed that the patients with MetS have increased circulating concentrations of MMP-9, MMP-2, and TIMP-1, TIMP-2 that are associated with increased concentrations of VEGF. These findings suggest that MMP-2 may have a role in the increased cardiovascular risk of MetS patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE After MI pathological LV remodeling is one of the major causes of death. We previously showed the NO mediated beneficial effects of nebivolol in rat MI model, in this study we aimed to evaluate the NOS related mechanisms in this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS Rats were divided into four groups: sham operated (sham-control), MI-induced (MI-control), immediate nebivolol loaded (MI-neb1), orally nebivolol treated (MI-neb2). MI was induced by the ligation of the LAD. Loading dose of nebivolol (0.1 mg/kg) was administrated i.v. during reperfusion and continuation dose was administrated orally (2 mg/kg) by gastric gavages once daily. NOS related mechanisms were assessed either in acute (2nd day) and sub-acute (28th day) period of MI by histologic, hemodynamic and biologic studies. RESULTS Compared to MI-control rats, physiological functions of LV (LVEDP, Δ±dp/dt) were prevented in both nebivolol treated groups. Improvements in anatomical parameters (LEV, HW, LVW/HW) were consistent with functional improvement too. Moreover, oxidative (characterized by decreased MDA and increased SOD levels) and nitrosative (characterized by decreased ONOO- levels) damage were limited in these groups. Compared to MI-control rats, most marked change was seen in the nNOS labelling in the nebivolol treated groups. The decrease in iNOS labelling was also prominent in these groups too. CONCLUSIONS NOS mediated mechanisms of nebivolol can be summarized as: 1) diminishing iNOS expression together with restoration of MI induced eNOS activation both in vascular bed and myocytes at the acute period of MI, and 2) prevention of deterioration in nNOS expression in myocardial cells at the sub-acute period of MI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we investigated the alterations of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), acute inflammation, and oxidative damage in the circulatory system and the intestine in response to mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). METHODS Twenty-one rats were divided randomly into the following three groups (n = 7 in each group): a sham group (CG), an ischemic group (IG), and an I/R group (I/RG). MMP-9, TIMP-1, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method, and lipid peroxidation (quantified as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) content), ischemia-modified albumin, the prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were measured spectrophotometrically. The degree of intestinal injury was evaluated according to the Chiu scoring system. RESULTS A significant difference between the mean serum TIMP-1 and MMP-9 levels and the alanine transaminase activity was found among the groups. Compared with the I/RG group a significant difference in the mean tissue MMP-9, MPO, and TBARS levels in addition to the PAB and FRAP was found between the CG and IG groups. The level of MMP-9 also demonstrated a strong, positive, and valid correlation with the TBA-RS levels. A significant morphological change was observed in both the IG and the I/RG groups. The degree of intestinal injury was more severe in the I/R group and was characterized by either villous denudation or villous loss. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that MMP-9, TIMP-1, MPO, and oxidative stress may be important in the intestinal injury development that is induced by acute mesenteric I/R in a rat model. MMP-9 overexpression may increase the extent of intestinal villous loss, particularly when MMP-9 is upregulated by the TBARS present in the intestinal injury.

Abstract
SETTING Sarcoidosis and tuberculosis share notable clinical, radiological, histological, and immunological similarities. The importance of vitamin D has long been investigated in these two granulomatous lung diseases. Cathelicidin is an antimicrobial peptide of the innate immune system, directly induced by vitD3. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the role of cathelicidin in sarcoidosis and tuberculosis development. DESIGN The study included 30 consecutive patients with active lung tuberculosis, 30 patients with sarcoidosis, and 20 healthy controls. 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and cathelicidin levels were measured in blood samples. RESULTS Vitamin D levels were significantly higher (p<0.001) in tuberculosis patients (22.5 ± 9.96 ng/ml) than in sarcoidosis patients (11.75 ± 8.92 ng/ml). Severe vitamin D deficiency was as frequent as 47% in sarcoidosis patients compared to only 3% in tuberculosis patients. Cathelicidin levels were significantly higher in the control group (120.37 ± 41.03 pg/ml) than in sarcoidosis (67.68 ± 38.03 pg/ml) and tuberculosis (68.74 ± 39.44 pg/ml) patients (p<0.001). However, no significant difference in cathelicidin levels was observed between tuberculosis and sarcoidosis patients (p=0.966). The optimum cathelicidin cut-off value to distinguish sarcoidosis patients from healthy controls was 107.14 pg/ml (sensitivity 81.5%, specificity 71.2%). CONCLUSION Cathelicidin appears to play different roles in the development of granulomatous lung disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of miR-21, nitric oxide (NOx) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) with subclinical atherosclerosis in carotid arteries by measuring carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in patients with hypertension and healthy controls. DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 28 hypertensive and 28 healthy controls were enrolled. MiR-21 expression was analyzed by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR and NOx, and eNOS levels were measured by ELISA assay. CIMT was evaluated by ultrasonography and CIMT ≥ 0.8 mm was accepted as increased CIMT (iCIMT). RESULTS C-reactive protein (CRP) level, plasma miR-21 expression level and CIMT were found to be significantly higher in the hypertension group when compared to the control group (p = 0.009, p = 0.002 and p < 0.001, respectively). NOx and eNOS levels were significantly lower in the hypertension group compared to the control group (p < 0.001, both). MiR-21 level was positively correlated with the clinical systolic blood pressure, clinical diastolic blood pressure, CRP and CIMT. MiR-21 was also negatively correlated with NOx and eNOS. Eighteen patients with hypertension had iCIMT. MiR-21 and CRP levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001), whereas NOx and eNOS levels were significantly lower in patients with iCIMT (p < 0.001, both). CONCLUSION The decreased levels of NOx and eNOS found in this study indicate the co-existence of endothelial dysfunction and hypertension once more. In the absence of microalbuminuria, the increased miR-21 expression in patients with iCIMT made us conclude that this miRNA might be involved in the early stages of atherosclerotic process in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
We compared Turkish patients with cardiac syndrome X (CSX) and controls with respect to serum pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine levels, as well as the single-nucleotide polymorphisms located in the promoter regions of their related genes. This study included 111 consecutive patients angiographically diagnosed with CSX and 111 healthy controls with similar demographic characteristics. Serum interleukin (IL) 6, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and IL-10 levels were measured, and the genotypes of the patients and controls were determined using standard methods. Serum IL-6 and IL-10 levels were significantly higher in the CSX group than in the control group ( P < .01, respectively). Serum TNF-α level was lower in the CSX group than in the control group ( P < .001). On the other hand, participants with CSX and healthy controls were not significantly different with respect to the genotype distributions of IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10 genes. As a result of our study, both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines may play a role in the pathogenesis of CSX. In contrast, the studied gene polymorphisms did not influence CSX pathogenesis.

Abstract
Background Vitiligo is a chronic, common disease of unknown etiology, and oxidative stress is suggested to have a role in its etiopathogenesis. Objective Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were evaluated regarding their role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo as well as their relationship with clinical presentation and disease severity, and these parameters were compared with those of healthy controls. Methods The study included 53 patients with vitiligo and 20 healthy volunteers as the control group. AOPP level, PAB, and FRAP were determined by colorimetric methods. Results PAB and FRAP level were significantly higher in patients with vitiligo than in healthy controls (p<0.001). The AOPP levels in vitiligo patients were not statistically significantly higher than those in healthy controls. The Vitiligo Area Scoring Index positively correlated with disease duration (rs: 0.531, p<0.001). Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of AOPP and PAB status in vitiligo. PAB may be used as an indicator for oxidative stress in the etiopathogenesis of vitiligo. Our results show that these parameters may play a major role in the melanocyte damage observed in vitiligo. Further studies are required to confirm the mechanisms underlying this effect.

Abstract
Accidentally ingested corrosive substances can cause functional and structural damage to the esophageal tissue resulting in stricture formation. It has been reported that the administration of olmesartan (OLM) can have anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic and antiapoptotic effects on injured tissue. The aim of our study was to check if OLM could prevent formation of scars in the corrosive esophageal burn model. Fifty-one Wistar Albino rats were divided into six groups: Control, Sham, OLM, Sham + OLM, Burn, and Burn + OLM. Olmesartan (5 mg/kg) was given by gavage once per day for 21 consecutive days after injury. The morphology of the esophagus was assessed after Masson trichrome staining, and apoptosis was evaluated using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferased UTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method. The serum nucleosomes (as an indicator of apoptosis), serum p53 protein, and esophageal tissue p53 protein levels of each group were measured by immunoassays. Muscularis mucosa damage, submucosal collagen deposition, and tunica muscularis injury in the Burn + OLM group decreased significantly compared with the Burn group (p < 0.05). Similarly, the number of apoptotic cells in the Burn + OLM group decreased compared with the Burn group (p < 0.05). Serum levels of nucleosomes and p53 and tissue of p53 protein did not differ between the groups. Exogenously administered OLM can effectively prevent the occurrence of esophageal strictures caused by corrosive esophageal burns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Reactive oxygen species have a known potent role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis. Iloprost, a pharmaceutical, is a chemically stable derivative of a naturally- occurring human prostacyclin. Several studies have demonstrated protective effects of iloprost via its antioxidant and its anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of iloprost on oxidant/antioxidant status, as well as the large bowel histopathology in experimental colitis. MATERIALS AND METHOD Forty adult male Wistar-albino rats were randomly divided in to four equal weight-matched groups: sham group (n=10), iloprost administered sham group (n=10), colitis group (n=10), iloprost administered colitis group (n=10). Acetic acid (1 ml of 4% solution) was used to induce colonic inflammation in the rats. RESULTS Colonic tissue and plasma malondialdehyde levels were significantly lower in the iloprost administered colitis group than the colitis group (p<0.01). Tissue glutathione levels of the iloprost administered colitis group were significantly higher than the colitis group (p<0.001). CONCLUSION We have demonstrated in this study iloprost to be an antioxidant, as well as iloprost demonstrating protective activity against colitis induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to determine the systemic levels of oxidative stress markers, such as ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and the prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), to clarify protein redox homeostasis in patients with Alzheimer's disease, and to compare them with mentally healthy persons of the same age. METHODS A total of 38 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 34 sex- and age-matched mentally healthy control subjects were included in this study. RESULTS The patients had significantly higher AOPP, IMA and PAB in the patient group than in the control group (P = 0.004, P = 0.001, P = 0.007, respectively). The FRAP was significantly lower in the patients with AD than in the control subjects (P = 0.002), and according to the receiver operating characteristic curves, the IMA and AOPP areas are below the 0.700 receiver operating characteristic curve line (area under the curve 0.817 and 0.730, respectively; 95% CI 0.709-0.898 and 0.612-0.828, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Increased IMA, AOPP and PAB, and decreased FRAP are likely to be results of oxidative stress, a condition in which an imbalance occurs between the production and inactivation of reactive oxygen species in AD. The IMA could be used for the better evaluation of clinical status, as well as the independent characteristic symptoms of AD, for the purposes of routine clinical laboratory analysis.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) has been reported to be associated with augmented reactive oxygen radicals and cytokines. Currently, we aimed to examine the influence of fluoxetine, which is already used as a preoperative anxiolytic, in the context of IR induced by occlusion of infrarenal abdominal aorta (60 min of ischemia) and its effects on renal oxidative status, inflammation, renal function, and cellular integrity in reperfusion (120 min post-ischemia). Male rats were randomly assigned as control, IR, and pretreated groups. The pretreated group animals received fluoxetine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) once daily for 3 days. Renal tissue oxidative stress, myeloperoxidase activity, proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6), histology, and function were assessed. As an anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10 was also assessed. IR led to a significant increase in lipid hydroperoxide, malondialdehyde, and pro-oxidant antioxidant balance and decrease in superoxide dismutase activity and ferric reducing/antioxidant power level (p < 0.05), but fluoxetine was able to restore these parameters. High concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, and myeloperoxidase activity caused by IR were significantly decreased in kidney tissue with fluoxetine. In addition, interleukin-10 levels were high in fluoxetine pretreated group. IR resulted in disrupted cellular integrity, infiltration of tissue with leukocytes, and decreased serum creatinine-urea levels (p < 0.05). Fluoxetine significantly restored impaired redox balance and inflammation parameters of rats subjected to IR to baseline values. This beneficial effect of fluoxetine on redox balance might be addressed to an improvement in renal function.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on rat muscles during tibial distraction osteogenesis (DO) at normal and hyperdistraction rates. Animals in groups 1 and 2 were distracted by 0.5 mm/day and those in groups 3 and 4 by 1 mm/day. Groups 2 and 4 received HBOT during distraction. Group 5 served as control. Superoxide dismutase (SOD; U/g protein), malondialdehyde (nmol/g protein), glutathione (mmol/g protein), and protein levels (g/dl) were determined. SOD was significantly higher in group 2 (4.59 ± 0.97) than in controls (2.19 ± 0.7) (P = 0.0001), and lower in group 4 (3.74 ± 1.70) than in group 2 (P=0.011). Malondialdehyde was significantly higher in group 2 (0.72 ± 0.23) than in controls (0.38 ± 0.10) (P=0.005). Total protein levels were better preserved with HBOT in distracted muscles: group 2 (3.24 ± 0.37) vs. group 1 (1.88 ± 0.60), and group 4 (3.45 ± 0.70) vs. group 3 (2.03 ± 0.75) (both P=0.0001). Numbers of fibres were lower in group 1 (4.88 ± 0.59) than in group 2 (6.07 ± 0.86), and in group 3 (5.13 ± 0.36) than in group 4 (6.14 ± 0.74) (both P=0.001). Numbers of nuclei were higher in group 1 (11.29 ± 2.47) than in group 2 (9.03 ± 1.53) (P=0.04), and in group 3 (12.43 ± 3.32) than in group 4 (9.08 ± 1.58) (P=0.001). Fibres and nuclei with HBOT were similar to those of controls. HBOT decreased the inflammatory cell infiltrate for group 1 (19.8 ± 8.54) vs. group 2 (4.2 ± 2.53) and group 3 (36.54 ± 11.29) vs. group 4 (21.5 ± 9.23) (both P=0.001). HBOT improves the adaptation of distracted muscle by increasing fibres and antioxidants while decreasing inflammation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the main effect of polymorphisms in genes involved in endothelial pathophysiological mechanisms, LOX-1 K167N and 3'UTR188CT single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in relation to preeclampsia (PE) risk and possible interactions between the gene polymorphisms and plasma oxLDL and soluble LOX-1 (sLOX-1) levels on PE in Turkish population. METHODS LOX-1 K167N and 3'UTR188CT polymorphisms were studied in 113 pregnant women with preeclampsia and 96 healthy pregnant women by the PCR-RFLP techniques. sLOX-1 and oxLDL levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in all study subjects. RESULTS Patients having LOX-1 3'UTR188CT (OR 3.55, 95% CI 1.89-6.67, P = 0.001) or 3'UTR188CC (OR 3.04, 95% CI 1.25-7.38, P = 0.012) genotype had a significantly higher risk of PE than those with 3'UTR188TT genotype. Also, patients having K167N KK (OR 2.73, 95% CI 1.33-5.61, P = 0.005) genotype had a significantly higher risk of PE than those with K167N NN genotype. LOX-1 3'UTR188TT and LOX-1 K167N NN genotype carriers were associated with significantly increased serum sLOX-1 level (P = 0.001). We further investigated the potential combined effect of these polymorphic variants on risk of PE development. According to the combined genotype analysis of LOX-1 3'UTR188TT and K167N NN polymorphisms, sLOX-1 and oxLDL levels also showed significant differences between PE patients and controls with or without combined TT/NN genotype carriers. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that higher plasma sLOX-1 and oxLDL concentrations, and the LOX-1 3'UTR188C>T and LOX-1 K167N gene polymorphisms were significantly associated with risk of developing preeclampsia. Plasma sLOX-1 may be a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of preeclampsia.

Abstract
The aims of this study included an examination of soluble lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-1 (sLOX-1) levels in hypertensive (HT) patients. Another aim examined sLOX-1 associations with oxidized LDL (oxLDL), nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and nitric oxide (NOx). A final aim was to compare these parameters between HT patients, white-coat hypertensive (WCH) patients and healthy controls. The three groups, HT, WCH and controls, were comprised of 35 patients each. sLOX-1 and oxLDL levels were significantly increased in WCH and HT patients compared with controls. The eNOS activation was significantly lower in HT than in the control group. sLOX-1 and oxLDL levels were significantly negatively correlated with eNOS levels in the WCH and HT groups. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) measurements were significantly higher in the WCH and HT groups compared with controls. There was a significant positive correlation between CIMT and sLOX-1 and oxLDL; however, there was a negative correlation with eNOS in WCH. Regression analysis revealed that sLOX-1 was the variable that had a significant effect on blood pressure (P<0.001, odds ratio (95% confidence interval=23.273 (5.843-92.688)). A possible endothelial impairment may act as a cardiovascular risk factor in WCH. Necessary measures should be considered in terms of atherosclerosis risk with HT, especially in early identification of endothelial damage by looking at sLOX-1 levels. We believe sLOX-1 levels are strong biomarkers for determining early endothelial damage in HT, and especially in WCH patients.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this paper was to evaluate the association between blood glucose, oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and paraoxonase activity as contributors to the accelerated atherosclerosis seen in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidized LDL (oxLDL), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) levels and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity were measured in sixty type 2 diabetic patients, 30 of whom had macrovascular complications, and 30 controls. RESULTS Diabetics with macrovascular complications had higher levels of MDA, oxLDL, MCP-1, ICAM-1, VCAM-1 than those without, and the difference was significant for all molecules except for ICAM-1. PON1 activity and ApoA1 levels of the controls were significantly higher than that of the patients, while PON1 activity and ApoA1 levels in the patients with macrovascular complications were significantly lower than that in patients without. Ambient plasma glucose concentration showed a significant positive association with plasma MDA, oxLDL, MCP-1, and VCAM, and a significant inverse association with PON1 and ApoA1 in diabetic patients. A significant positive correlation between oxLDL and MDA, a negative correlation between oxLDL and PON1; a significant inverse association between MDA and PON1; a positive correlation between MDA and MCP-1 and VCAM while a negative correlation between PON1 and MCP-1 and VCAM were detected in patients. CONCLUSION Hyperglycemia might play a significant role in generating increased oxidative stress, and decreased PON1 activity, resulting in elevated oxLDL, MCP-1 and VCAM levels. This might be one of the causal pathogenic factors initiating accelerated atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The implication of these findings are unclear and therefore further studies are required.
