Effects of early resource limitation and compensatory growth on lifetime fitness in the ladybird beetle (Harmonia axyridis)

Acceleration of growth following a period of diet restriction may result in either complete or partial catch-up in size. The existence of such compensatory growth indicates that organisms commonly grow at rates below their physiological maxima and this implies a cost for accelerated growth. We examined patterns of accelerated growth in response to temporary resource limitation, and assayed both short and long-term costs of this growth in the ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis. Subsequent to the period of food restriction, accelerated growth resulted in complete compensation for body sizes, although we observed greater larval mortality during the period of compensation. There were no effects on female fecundity or survivorship within 3 months of maturation. Females did not discriminate against males that had undergone compensatory growth, nor did we observe effects on male mating behaviour. However, individuals that underwent compensatory growth died significantly sooner when deprived of food late in adult life, suggesting that longer-term costs of compensatory growth may be quite mild and detectable only under stressful conditions.

Maintaining a behaviour polymorphism by frequency-dependent selection on a single gene

Accounting for the abundance of genetic variation in the face of natural selection remains a central problem of evolutionary biology. Genetic polymorphisms are constantly arising through mutation, and although most are promptly eliminated, polymorphisms in functionally important traits are common. One mechanism that can maintain polymorphisms is negative frequency-dependent selection on alternative alleles, whereby the fitness of each decreases as its frequency increases. Examples of frequency-dependent selection are rare, especially when attempting to describe the genetic basis of the phenotype under selection. Here we show frequency-dependent selection in a well-known natural genetic polymorphism affecting fruitfly foraging behaviour. When raised in low nutrient conditions, both of the naturally occurring alleles of the foraging gene (for(s) and for(R)) have their highest fitness when rare-the hallmark of negative frequency-dependent selection. This effect disappears at higher resources levels, demonstrating the role of larval competition. We are able to confirm the involvement of the foraging gene by showing that a sitter-like mutant allele on a rover background has similar frequency-dependent fitness as the natural sitter allele. Our study represents a clear demonstration of frequency-dependent selection, and we are able to attribute this effect to a single, naturally polymorphic gene known to affect behaviour.

Sperm Competition and the Evolution of Ejaculate Composition

We present a model of sperm competition that incorporates both sperm and nonsperm parts of the ejaculate. Our primary focus is on determining how ejaculate composition and size evolves as a function of the effects of seminal fluid on male reproductive success and as a function of asymmetry in sperm usage by females. The model predicts that different patterns of investment in sperm and seminal products are expected to evolve as a function of the bias in sperm usage by females. It also predicts the evolution of distinct patterns in ejaculate composition depending on the function of seminal fluid. In the discussion, we highlight a number of potential approaches for testing the theory that we develop.

Escalation, retreat, and female indifference as alternative outcomes of sexually antagonistic coevolution

Verbal and quantitative genetic models of sexually antagonistic coevolution suggest that coevolutionary arms races should be common. Sexual selection favors exaggeration of male persistence traits that are costly to females, and females, in turn, are selected to resist these traits. The heightened resistance by females is thought to then favor further exaggeration in the male trait, leading to an escalating coevolutionary arms race between persistence and resistance traits. Much of this theory, however, is based on an (implicit) assumption that there are tight constraints on how female resistance can evolve. We develop a theory that identifies and relaxes these constraints, allowing female resistance to evolve in a fashion that better reflects known empirical patterns in the evolution of female preference functions (the resistance trait). Our results suggest that evolutionary arms races that lead to the exaggeration of persistence and resistance will be much less common than formerly predicted. Females sometimes evolve indifference to male traits rather than resistance and can even evolve to discriminate against these traits. These alternative outcomes depend on the existence of genetic variance in the components of the female sensory system underlying female resistance and on the strength of natural selection acting on these components. Female indifference tends to evolve when natural selection on the sensory system is weak, and under these conditions, sexually antagonistic coevolution tends not to reduce female fitness significantly at equilibrium. When natural selection on the female sensory system is strong, however, then arms races are more likely, and female fitness is then sometimes significantly depressed at equilibrium. Sexually antagonistic coevolution is thus likely to have strong deleterious effects on population fitness only when female sensory traits are under strong natural selection to perform functions in addition to those involved with mating. Together, these results suggest that identifying the nature of genetic variation in and the strength of natural selection on female resistance should be a central goal of future studies of sexual conflict.

Effects of early resource-limiting conditions on patterns of growth, growth efficiency, and immune function at emergence in a damselfly (Odonata: Coenagrionidae)

Periods of restricted growth during early development are expected to have detrimental effects on subsequent metrics of fitness, most prominently increases in age and decreases in size at maturity. However, in some cases, animals may compensate by altering foraging effort, growth efficiency, or patterns of resource allocation between critical traits prior to maturation. Yet, even when compensation for age and size is complete, brief periods of restricted growth may carry costs persisting in the long term, and compensatory tactics may themselves be costly. We investigated the long-term costs of early growth restriction and mechanisms of compensatory growth in the damselfly Ischnura verticalis (Say, 1839). Larvae were temporarily exposed to one of three feeding regimes in the early stages of development, after which food levels were restored. In the period of unrestricted growth prior to emergence, partial compensation for structural size in the lowest food treatment was observed, while both resource-limited groups accelerated mass gain relative to controls. Changes in food consumption and food conversion efficiency were ruled out as mechanisms for accelerating growth following diet restriction. We tested for changes in resource allocation patterns that could explain the observed compensatory growth and found that adult body shape may depend on early growth conditions in females. There was no evidence of detrimental effects on immune function at emergence, although males tended to have higher phenoloxidase activity (a measure of immunocompetence) than females.

The shaping of senescence in the wild

A central prediction of classical theories of senescence states that environments posing a high risk of mortality favor the evolution of rapid intrinsic deterioration, or ageing. Although widely cited as being largely corroborated by existing data, empirical support for this prediction has been mixed. Recent theory suggests that this expectation should only be realized under particular circumstances, and this could account for the equivocal empirical findings. Here, we highlight the salient features of some of the recent developments in this field and suggest some ways in which progress might be made. We argue that it is necessary to move beyond the simplistic classical expectation and to take a more comprehensive and precise approach to studies of senescence, both theoretically and empirically.

A comparison of parasite loads on asexual and sexual Phoxinus (Pisces: Cyprinidae)

In light of the inherent disadvantages of sexual reproduction, the existence of sex is often seen as a paradox. There are a variety of hypothetical benefits of sexual reproduction that may balance its disadvantages. The Red Queen hypothesis proposes that sexually reproducing species are better able to evolve resistance to parasites than asexually reproducing species. A prediction of the Red Queen hypothesis is that a parasite should evolve to preferentially exploit an asexual species over a sexual species. To test this central prediction of the Red Queen hypothesis, intensity of infection by the parasite Gyrodactylus eos Mayes, 1977 (Monogenea) was compared between sympatric asexual and sexual fish species in the genus Phoxinus Rafinesque, 1820. In each lake where these species coexist, the asexual fish should suffer higher intensities of infection than the sexual fish. In the majority of lakes sampled, there were more parasites on asexual than sexual fish.

Detecting sexual conflict and sexually antagonistic coevolution

We begin by providing an operational definition of sexual conflict that applies to both inter- and intralocus conflict. Using this definition, we examine a series of simple coevolutionary models to elucidate fruitful approaches for detecting interlocus sexual conflict and resultant sexually antagonistic coevolution. We then use published empirical examples to illustrate the utility of these approaches. Three relevant attributes emerge. First, the dynamics of sexually antagonistic coevolution may obscure the conflict itself. Second, competing models of inter-sexual coevolution may yield similar population patterns near equilibria. Third, a variety of evolutionary forces underlying competing models may be acting simultaneously near equilibria. One main conclusion is that studies of emergent patterns in extant populations (e.g. studies of population and/or female fitness) are unlikely to allow us to distinguish among competing coevolutionary models. Instead, we need more research aimed at identifying the forces of selection acting on shared traits and sexually antagonistic traits. More specifically, we need a greater number of functional studies of female traits as well as studies of the consequences of both male and female traits for female fitness. A mix of selection and manipulative studies on these is likely the most promising route.

Intralocus sexual conflict and the genetic architecture of sexually dimorphic traits in Prochyliza xanthostoma (Diptera: Piophilidae)

Because homologous traits of males and females are likely to have a common genetic basis, sex-specific selection (often resulting from sexual selection on one sex) may generate an evolutionary tug-of-war known as intralocus sexual conflict, which will constrain the adaptive divergence of the sexes. Theory suggests that intralocus sexual conflict can be mitigated through reduction of the intersexual genetic correlation (rMF), predicting negative covariation between rMF and sexual dimorphism. In addition, recent work showed that selection should favor reduced expression of alleles inherited from the opposite-sex parent (intersexual inheritance) in traits subject to intralocus sexual conflict. For traits under sexual selection in males, this should be manifested either in reduced maternal heritability or, when conflict is severe, in reduced heritability through the opposite-sex parent in offspring of both sexes. However, because we do not know how far these hypothesized evolutionary responses can actually proceed, the importance of intralocus sexual conflict as a long-term constraint on adaptive evolution remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the genetic architecture of sexual and nonsexual morphological traits in Prochyliza xanthostoma. The lowest rMF and greatest dimorphism were exhibited by two sexual traits (head length and antenna length) and, among all traits, the degree of sexual dimorphism was correlated negatively with rMF. Moreover, sexual traits exhibited reduced maternal heritabilities, and the most strongly dimorphic sexual trait (antenna length) was heritable only through the same-sex parent in offspring of both sexes. Our results support theory and suggest that intralocus sexual conflict can be resolved substantially by genomic adaptation. Further work is required to identify the proximate mechanisms underlying these patterns.

Sexual selection, genetic architecture, and the condition dependence of body shape in the sexually dimorphic fly Prochyliza xanthostoma (Piophilidae)

The hypothesis that sexual selection drives the evolution of condition dependence is not firmly supported by empirical evidence, and the process remains poorly understood. First, even though sexual competition typically involves multiple traits, studies usually compare a single sexual trait with a single "control" trait, ignoring variation among sexual traits and raising the possibility of sampling bias. Second, few studies have addressed the genetic basis of condition dependence. Third, even though condition dependence is thought to result from a form of sex-specific epistasis, the evolution of condition dependence has never been considered in relation to intralocus sexual conflict. We argue that condition dependence may weaken intersexual genetic correlations and facilitate the evolution of sexual dimorphism. To address these questions, we manipulated an environmental factor affecting condition (larval diet) and examined its effects on four sexual and four nonsexual traits in Prochyliza xanthostoma adults. As predicted by theory, the strength of condition dependence increased with degree of exaggeration among male traits. Body shape was more condition dependent in males than in females and, perhaps as a result, genetic and environmental effects on body shape were congruent in males, but not in females. However, of the four male sexual traits, only head length was significantly larger in high-condition males after controlling for body size. Strong condition dependence was associated with reduced intersexual genetic correlation. However, homologous male and female traits exhibited correlated responses to condition, suggesting an intersexual genetic correlation for condition dependence itself. Our findings support the role of sexual selection in the evolution of condition dependence, but reveal considerable variation in condition dependence among sexual traits. It is not clear whether the evolution of condition dependence has mitigated or exacerbated intralocus sexual conflict in this species.

Resource limitation, predation risk and compensatory growth in a damselfly

Periods of poor nutrition during early development may have negative fitness consequences in subsequent periods of ontogeny. In insects, suppression of growth and developmental rate during the larval stage are likely to affect size and timing of maturity, which in turn may lead to reduced reproductive success or survivorship. In light of these costs, individuals may achieve compensatory growth via behavioural or physiological mechanisms following food limitation. In this study, we examined the effects of a temporary period of food restriction on subsequent growth and age and size at maturity in the larval damselfly Ischnura verticalis (Odonata: Coenagrionidae). We also asked whether this temporary period of reduced nutrition affected subsequent foraging behaviour under predation risk. I. verticalis larvae exposed to a temporary food shortage suffered from a reduced growth rate during this period relative to a control group that was fed ad libitum. However, increased growth rates later in development ensured that adult body size measurements (head and pronotum widths) did not differ between the treatments upon emergence. In contrast, adult dry mass did not catch up to that of the controls, indicating that the increased growth rates for size dimensions occur at the cost of similar gains in mass. Predators reduced foraging effort of larvae, but this reduction did not differ between control larvae and those previously exposed to poor nutrition.

Interactions among mechanisms of sexual selection on male body size and head shape in a sexually dimorphic fly

Darwin envisaged male-male and male-female interactions as mutually supporting mechanisms of sexual selection, in which the best armed males were also the most attractive to females. Although this belief continues to predominate today, it has been challenged by sexual conflict theory, which suggests that divergence in the interests of males and females may result in conflicting sexual selection. This raises the empirical question of how multiple mechanisms of sexual selection interact to shape targeted traits. We investigated sexual selection on male morphology in the sexually dimorphic fly Prochyliza xanthostoma, using indices of male performance in male-male and male-female interactions in laboratory arenas to calculate gradients of direct, linear selection on male body size and an index of head elongation. In male-male combat, the first interaction with a new opponent selected for large body size but reduced head elongation, whereas multiple interactions with the same opponent favored large body size only. In male-female interactions, females preferred males with relatively elongated heads, but male performance of the precopulatory leap favored large body size and, possibly, reduced head elongation. In addition, the amount of sperm transferred (much of which is ingested by females) was an increasing function of both body size and head elongation. Thus, whereas both male-male and male-female interactions favored large male body size, male head shape appeared to be subject to conflicting sexual selection. We argue that conflicting sexual selection may be a common result of divergence in the interests of the sexes.

Detecting sexually antagonistic coevolution with population crosses

The result of population crosses on traits such as mating rate, oviposition rate and survivorship are increasingly used to distinguish between modes of coevolution between the sexes. Two key hypotheses, erected from a verbal theory of sexually antagonistic coevolution, have been the subject of several recent tests. First, statistical interactions arising in population crosses are suggested to be indicative of a complex signal/receiver system. In the case of oviposition rates, an interaction between populations (x, y and z) would be indicated by the rank order of female oviposition rates achieved by x, y and z males changing depending upon the female (x, y or z) with which they mated. Second, under sexually antagonistic coevolution females will do 'best' when mated with their own males, where best is defined by the weakest response to the signal and the highest fitness. We test these hypotheses by crossing strains generated from a formal model of sexually antagonistic coevolution. Strains differ in the strength of natural selection acting on male and female traits. In our model, we assume sexually antagonistic coevolution of a single male signal and female receptor. The female receptor is treated as a preference function where both the slope and intercept of the function can evolve. Our results suggest that neither prediction is consistently supported. Interactions are not diagnostic of complex signal-receiver systems, and even under sexually antagonistic coevolution, females may do better mating with males of strains other than their own. These results suggest a reinterpretation of several recent experiments and have important implications for developing theories of speciation when sexually antagonistic coevolution is involved.

Multiple mating and sequential mate choice in guppies: females trade up

The trade-up hypothesis outlines a behavioural strategy that females could use to maximize the genetic benefits to their offspring. The hypothesis proposes that females should be more willing to accept a mate when the new male encountered is a superior genetic source to previous mates. We provide a direct test of the trade-up hypothesis using guppies (Poecilia reticulata), and evaluate both behavioural and paternity data. Virgin female guppies were presented sequentially with two males of varying attractiveness, and their responsiveness to each male was quantified. Male attractiveness (ornamentation) was scored as the amount of orange coloration on their body. Females were generally less responsive to second-encountered males, yet responsiveness to second males was an increasing function of male ornamentation. These attractive second males also sired a greater proportion of the offspring. There was an overall tendency for last-male advantage in paternity, and this advantage was most exaggerated when the second male was more ornamented than the first. Finally, we found that our estimate of relative sperm number did not account for any significant variation in paternity. Our results suggest that female guppies may use pre-copulatory mechanisms to maximize the genetic quality of their offspring.

Natural selection in a bottle

The study of natural selection in laboratory systems undergoing experimental evolution can provide important insights into the relationship between natural selection and adaptation. We studied selection on the norm of reaction of age at first reproduction in a laboratory population of Drosophila melanogaster. This population had been selected on a discrete generation schedule in the laboratory for more than 600 generations. Using genetically marked strains, we studied development time, size, female fecundity, and viability of flies that began development at different times relative to the initiation of each bottle. Only flies that began development within 30 h of the initiation of the bottle were reliably able to eclose before the next transfer. Theory predicts that flies initiating development around this critical time should decrease size at maturity to ensure eclosion by the 14-d deadline, but late flies are not smaller. This result suggests an unknown constraint on response to selection on age at maturity in this population. Ultimately, laboratory systems provide the best opportunity for the study of natural selection, genetic variation, and evolutionary response in the same population.
