Abstract
Hydration of interfaces with a layer of water is a ubiquitous phenomenon, which has important implications for numerous natural and technologically important processes. Nevertheless, at the nanoscale, the understanding of the wetting process is still limited, since it is experimentally difficult to follow. Here, graphene and monolayers of MoS2 deposited on dry mica are used to investigate wetting of the two-dimensional (2D) material-mica interfaces with a molecularly thin layer of water employing scanning force microscopy in different modes. Wetting occurs non-monotonously in time and space for both types of interfaces. It starts at relative humidities (RH) of 10-17% for graphenes and 8-9% for MoS2 and concludes with a homogeneous layer at 25-30 and 15-20%, respectively. Investigation of the process at the graphene-mica interface indicates that up to about 25% RH, initially a highly compliant and unstable layer of water spreads, which subsequently stabilizes by developing labyrinthine nanostructures. Moreover, these nanostructures exhibit distinct mechanical deformability and dissipation, which is ascribed to different densities of the confined water layer. The laterally structured morphology is explained by the interplay of counteracting long-range dipole-dipole repulsion and short-range line tension, with the latter causing at least in part by the mechanical deformation of the 2D material. The proposed origins of the interactions are common for thin layers of polar molecules at interfaces, implying that the lateral structuring of thin wetting layers at submonolayer concentrations may also be a quite general phenomenon.

Abstract
PURPOSE Human microbiota comprises of a variety of organisms ranging from bacterial species to viruses, fungi, and protozoa which are present on the epidermal and mucosal barriers of the body. It plays a key role in health and survival of the host by regulation of the systemic functions. Its apparent functions in modulation of the host immune system, inducing carcinogenesis and regulation of the response to the cancer therapy through a variety of mechanisms such as bacterial dysbiosis, production of genotoxins, pathobionts, and disruption of the host metabolism are increasingly becoming evident. METHODS Different electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were searched for relevant literature which has been reviewed in this article. RESULTS Characterization of the microbiome particularly gut microbiota, understanding of the host-microbiota interactions, and its potential for therapeutic exploitation are necessary for the development of novel anticancer therapeutic strategies with better efficacy and lowered off-target side effects. CONCLUSION In this review, the role of microbiota is explained in carcinogenesis, mechanisms of microbiota-mediated carcinogenesis, and role of gut microbiota in modulation of cancer therapy.

Abstract
An anionic layered coordination polymer [Eu(BTEC)0.5(HCOO)(H2O)2] (1) has been successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method (H4BTEC = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, HCOOH = formic acid). Compound 1 possesses two-dimensional layers, which further generate a three-dimensional supramolecular network by hydrogen bonds existing between carboxylic oxygen, formate anion and H2O molecules of two adjacent layers. Interestingly, 1 shows high luminescence quenching efficiency upon addition of Fe3+ ions when it was dispersed in water even in the presence of interfering ions such as Na+, Ag+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Al3+. When dispersed in DMSO solution, 1 displays excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards both Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions. Possible quenching mechanisms for detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions were carefully investigated and proposed based on a dynamic quenching process, static quenching process and fluorescence inner filter effect. Moreover, the as-prepared particles can be used for visualizing latent fingerprints on various substrates. These results indicate that a Eu(iii)-based coordination polymer has great potential in detection and security application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Polymorphisms in coagulation genes have been associated with early-onset ischemic stroke. Here we pursue an a priori hypothesis that genetic variation in the endothelial-based receptors of the thrombomodulin-protein C system (THBD and PROCR) may similarly be associated with early-onset ischemic stroke. We explored this hypothesis utilizing a multi-stage design of discovery and replication. METHODS Discovery was performed in the Genetics-of-Early-Onset Stroke (GEOS) Study, a biracial population-based case-control study of ischemic stroke among men and women aged 15-49 including 829 cases of first ischemic stroke (42.2% African-American) and 850 age-comparable stroke-free controls (38.1% African-American). Twenty-four single-nucleotide-polymorphisms (SNPs) in THBD and 22 SNPs in PROCR were evaluated. Following LD pruning (r2≥0.8), we advanced uncorrelated SNPs forward for association analyses. Associated SNPs were evaluated for replication in an early-onset ischemic stroke population (onset-age<60 years) consisting of 3676 cases and 21118 non-stroke controls from 6 case-control studies. Lastly, we determined if the replicated SNPs also associated with older-onset ischemic stroke in the METASTROKE data-base. RESULTS Among GEOS Caucasians, PROCR rs9574, which was in strong LD with 8 other SNPs, and one additional independent SNP rs2069951, were significantly associated with ischemic stroke (rs9574, OR = 1.33, p = 0.003; rs2069951, OR = 1.80, p = 0.006) using an additive-model adjusting for age, gender and population-structure. Adjusting for risk factors did not change the associations; however, associations were strengthened among those without risk factors. PROCR rs9574 also associated with early-onset ischemic stroke in the replication sample (OR = 1.08, p = 0.015), but not older-onset stroke. There were no PROCR associations in African-Americans, nor were there any THBD associations in either ethnicity. CONCLUSION PROCR polymorphisms are associated with early-onset ischemic stroke in Caucasians.

Abstract
Diverse impact of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) over the landscape of environment is generally believed in literature. As CO2 emission acutely leads to GHGs is a major contributor for global warming, it creates a serious pressure on natural resources and ecological settings. Similarly, low-carbon (CO2) economy, plenty of energy resources, and sustainable growth are a big ask for worldwide economies in this era of mechanization. This paper analyzes the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, for Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) economies, to contend the role of mega projects in BRI as an attribute for ecological detriments. The on-hand study engages fresh data information ranging from 1981 to 2016 holding with heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence as a special deliberation. The calculated outcomes expose that, mean group estimator provides strong evidence and favor the existence of EKC approximately in every region. The long-run influence is measured by pooled mean group estimators, which shows significant outcomes in every region; additionally, the EKC hypothesis affirmed in the long run especially for developed economies. Abstract
Soil-transmitted helminth infections constitute a global affliction affecting people and livestock, resulting in a significant disease burden and economic losses in endemic regions. However, control has not been entirely successful and the problem is compounded by the development of resistance to available chemotherapy. Novel alternative compounds are urgently needed, encouraging the screening of largely plant-based sources for anthelmintic effects. Date palm fruit (Phoenix dactylifera) is a popular and nutritious food much coveted for its nutraceutical effect. There are convincing reports documenting the antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects of date palm fruit but evidence for any potential anthelmintic effect remains unclear. Here we conducted a systematic review of the published information through an electronic search using six scientific databases; SCOPUS, MEDLINE COMPLETE, OVID, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE and CINAHL COMPLETE. Out of 58 studies that were initially identified only 2 manuscripts fitted our inclusion criteria. The first article reported on the anthelmintic effect of date palm fruit against the rodent nematodes Trichuris muris and Angiostrongylus cantonensis in vitro and in vivo while the second article was based only on in vivo assessment (with coconut) of the effect on the rodent cestode Hymenolepis microstoma. Our review revealed limited anecdotal reports of the anthelmintic effect of date palm fruit against parasitic helminths, however, the majority of reports were inconclusive due to mixed results, limited focus on date palm fruit and lack of any statistical analyses. Rigorous, systematic and fully controlled studies focusing on date palm fruit are needed to validate the anecdotal evidence.

Abstract
Acute febrile illnesses (AFIs) in children from the developing world can have varying etiologies. Awareness of local epidemiology helps in prioritizing investigations and empiric treatment. This prospective study was carried out in a tertiary care center in North India, aiming to determine the burden, etiology, and outcome of AFI other than pneumonia and diarrhea in hospitalized children. A total of 613 consecutive children aged 3 months to 12 years with febrile illness of < 7 days during four selected months of 2014 representing different seasons were screened for eligibility. Those with acute respiratory diseases (N = 175, 28.5%) and diarrheal illness (N = 46, 7.5%) were excluded and 217 children were enrolled. Mean (standard deviation) age was 4.8 (3.4) years. Nearly half (N = 91, 41.9%) presented in post-monsoon season. Diagnosis could be established in 187 (86.2%) children. Acute central nervous system infections were the most common (N = 54, 24.8%). Among specific infections, scrub typhus was the most frequent (N = 23, 10.5%) followed by malaria (N = 14, 6.4%), typhoid (N = 14, 6.5%), and viral hepatitis (N = 13, 6.0%). Blood culture had a low (6.5%) yield; Salmonella typhi (N = 6) and Staphylococcus aureus (N = 5) were the common isolates. Serological tests were helpful in 50 (23%) cases. In multivariate analysis, hepatomegaly and/or splenomegaly independently predicted scrub typhus. Mortality rate was 10.1%. We conclude that AFI other than pneumonia and diarrhea are a significant burden and follow a seasonal trend. Scrub typhus has emerged as an important etiology of childhood AFIs in northern India. Periodic review of regional epidemiology will help in understanding the changing pattern of infectious diseases.

Abstract
Acute oesophageal necrosis (AON), also known as 'black oesophagus', is a rare condition characterised by the necrosis of the oesophagus usually involving the distal part. It has been associated with various conditions, and the pathogenesis is thought to involve hypovolaemia combined with decreased function of oesophageal protective mucosal barriers and may be compounded by the effect of gastric secretions on oesophageal mucosa. The hallmark of this condition is characteristic circumferential black discolouration of the distal oesophagus that may extend proximally. We present a case of a man who presented with haematemesis associated with cocaine abuse. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy confirmed black oesophagus. The patient was managed with intravenous fluids, packed red blood cell transfusions, proton pump inhibitors and sucralfate suspension; however, he failed to recover. We have also reviewed the previous reported cases of AON in association with cocaine use.

Abstract
Background: Thyroid disorders are a commonly encountered problem in hilly areas of Pakistan. The objectives of the study were to determine the frequency and distribution of thyroid disorders among patients presenting with suggestive signs & symptoms of thyroid disorders in Hazara Division, Pakistan. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics & Neonatology, Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, KP, Pakistan from January, 2017 to January, 2018. Exclusion criteria was patients taking medicines such as Lithium and Cordarone. Sample size was 55 selected using consecutive sampling technique. Reference values were taken as follows; serum TSH=0.4-4.0 µIU/L, serum T3=100-200 ng/dL), serum T4=5-13.5 µgm/dL. Demographic variables were sex and age. Research variables were thyroid status (euthyroid/ hyperthyroid/ hypothyroid) and levels of thyroid function tests (TFT). Categorical variables such as sex and thyroid status were calculated by frequency and percentages whereas numeric variables such as age and TFT by Mean and SD. Descriptive statistics were calculated using SPSS Version 20. Results: Out of the total 55 patients, 11 patients were males and 44 patients were females. The minimum age was 20 years, maximum age was 90 years. Mean age was 43.24 years±15.118. Out of the total 55 patients, 14 (25.5%) were euthyroid, 30 patients (54.5%) were hyperthyroid and 11 (20%) patients were hypothyroid. Out of the 14 patients that were euthyroid, seven were males and seven were females. Out of the 30 hyperthyroid patients 26 were females and only 4 were males. All 11 hypothyroid were females. Conclusions: Hyperthyroidism is more common thyroid disorder in Hazara Division specially in adult females.

Abstract
Background: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital malformations from abnormal budding of embryonic foregut and tracheobronchial tree. We present a case of bronchogenic cyst with severe back pain, epigastric distress and refractory nausea and vomiting. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old Hispanic female presented with a 3-week history of recurrent sharp interscapular pain radiating to epigastrium with refractory nausea and vomiting. She underwent cholecystectomy 2-years ago. Computed tomography (CT) abdomen at that time showed a subcarinal mass measuring 5.4 X 5.0 cm. Subsequent endoscopic ultrasound diagnosed it as a bronchogenic cyst. Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided aspiration resulted in incomplete drainage and she was discharged after partial improvement. Current physical examination showed tachycardia and tachypnea with labs showing leukocytosis, elevated inflammatory markers, and hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. CT chest showed an increased size of the bronchogenic cyst (9.64 X 7.7 cm) suggestive of possible partial cyst rupture or infected cyst. X-ray esophagram ruled out esophageal compression or contrast extravasation. Patient's symptoms were refractory to conservative management. The patient ultimately underwent right thoracotomy with cyst excision that resulted in complete resolution of symptoms. Conclusion: Bronchogenic cysts are the most common primary cysts of mediastinum with the prevalence of 6%. The most common symptoms are chest pain, dyspnea, cough, and stridor. Diagnosis is made by chest X-Ray and CT chest. Magnetic resonance imaging chest and EBUS are more sensitive and specific. Symptomatic cysts should be resected unless surgical risks are high. Asymptomatic cysts in younger patients should be removed due to low surgical risk and potential late complications. Watchful waiting has been recommended for asymptomatic adults or high-risk patients. This case presents mediastinal bronchogenic cyst as a cause of back, nausea and refractory vomiting. Immediate surgical excision in such cases should be attempted, which will lead to resolution of symptoms and avoidance of complications.
