Abstract
Background: Piezosurgery is a surgical procedure that is able to perform osteotomies by a micrometric and selective cut of the bone tissue. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate two different techniques; an ultrasonic device, and a drill approach for implant site preparation. Methods: A total of fifty patients were recruited for the randomized clinical trial to receive dental implants for fixed prosthetic restoration in the posterior mandible and were allotted to two groups. In Group A the implant site was prepared following a drilling technique, while in Group B the implant site was prepared using an ultrasonic device; moreover, the operative duration was recorded. Postoperative pain and swelling were evaluated at 1, 2, 4, and 6 days. The crestal bone resorption was measured at 3 months from implant placement by a three-dimensional tomography evaluation. Results: The findings suggest that osteotomies performed by an ultrasonic device cause less pain and swelling. On the other hand, the piezoelectric preparation was characterized by a significative increase in the operative time. No statistical differences in crestal bone resorption were evident in the two different approaches. Conclusions: According to the outcome of the study, ultrasonic implant bed preparation can be used with success in implantology and could be considered a suitable alternative to traditional drilling techniques for dental fixture placement.

Abstract
Different surgical techniques have been developed to reconstruct the posterior maxilla without bone graft. A barrier membrane usually placed internal to the sinus, without stabilizer or bone window, pushed inside the sinus cavity as the ''roof'' of the sinus cavity to preserve the space and help bone regeneration has been used with success. In the present technical report, the heterologous cortical lamina is used for the mechanical support of sinus membranes. The membrane is placed through two lines of 2-3 mm, mesial and distal, created at the top of the antrostomy. The half heterologous membrane is positioned on these lines and pushed to the nose wall of the sinus, and the other half is folded to cover the window. In this way the bone lamina is stable. Cone Beam Computed Tomography was used to evaluate the efficacy of bone lamina to preserve the space in sinus lifting which contributes positively to wound healing and is effective in bone formation without biomaterials.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to compare the efficacy of two different techniques for maxillary sinus augmentation using a lateral window approach: Heterologous cortical lamina without any grafting material versus 100% collagenated granular collagen porcine bone. Methods: Twenty-three healthy patients with not relevant past medical history (14 women and 9 men, non-smokers, mean age 52 years, range 48–65 years) were included. In Group I, the sinus was filled with collagen porcine bone (Geno-os, OsteoBiol, Turin, Italy) and a collagen membrane (Evolution, OsteoBiol, Turin, Italy) was used to close the lateral window of the sinus. In Group II, the sinus was treated with heterologous cortical lamina only (Lamina, OsteoBiol, Turin, Italy). Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the surgical time required to complete the augmentation procedures: 18.3 ± 2.1 min for lamina treated sites versus 12.5 ± 3.1 min for porcine bone treated sites. In Group I, the mean volume of the graft was 3101 ± 321 mm3 in the immediate postoperative examination (5–7 days), while after a six-month healing period it was 2716.7 ± 432 mm3. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the use of heterologous cortical lamina is a valid technique for the mechanical support of sinus membranes resulting in only bone tissue formation and not mixed with the graft. The graft material was biocompatible and not completely resorbed after six months, although the remains were integrated into the bone.

Abstract
Purpose: Post-operative pain and swelling are frequently observed after sinus lift procedures. The aim of the present study was the clinical evaluation of swelling and pain of two different sinus flap lift techniques using a visual analogue scale (VAS), verbal rating scale (VRS), and infrared thermal imaging (i.e., thermography). Materials Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 15 patients (30 sinuses in total) randomly allocated into two groups. For the sinuses of Group I a trapezoidal flap was used, while for Group II a modified triangular flap without anterior release was utilized. Postoperative pain was scored by means of a 100-mm VAS ranging from 0 (no pain) to 100 (worst pain imaginable), and was recorded at 2, 4, 6 and 14 days after surgery. Swelling was recorded by a verbal rating scale (VRS) and was classified into four categories: a score of 1 referred the absence of swelling, patients with intra-oral swelling in the surgical zone scored 2, any extra-oral swelling in the surgical zone scored 3, and intense swelling exhibited by extra-oral swelling extending beyond the surgical zone scored 4. The facial temperature was recorded before and after sinus augmentation, and at 2, 4, 6, and 14 days post-surgery to check the course of healing. Results: In Group I pain intensity was recorded at 2 days after surgery with a mean score of 38.67 ± 6.4 mm. Swelling was greater at 2 and 4 days, and was absent at day 6. The facial temperature difference before and after the procedure was 4.737 °C ± 0.37. In Group II the pain score were lower than in Group I (p < 0.05). The score for swelling was 2 on the first and second days, and was reduced on day 4. After the second day the difference in temperature was significantly reduced as compared to the day of surgery (0.77 °C); at 2 and 4 days no difference was registered. Conclusions: The results of this clinical study show the significant effectiveness of the modified triangular flap in the sinus lift procedure for reducing pain and swelling.

Abstract
PURPOSE The immediate placement of single postextractive implants is increasing in the everyday clinical practice. Due to insufficient bone tissue volume, proper primary stability, essential for subsequent osseointegration, is sometimes not reached. The aim of this work was to compare two different approaches: implant bed preparation before and after root extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-two patients of both sexes were selected who needed an implant-prosthetic rehabilitation of the fractured first mandibular molar or presented an untreatable endodontic pathology. The sites were randomly assigned to the test group (treated with implant bed preparation before molar extractions) or control group (treated with implant bed preparation after molar extractions) by a computer-generated table. All implants were placed by the same operator, who was experienced in both traditional and ultrasonic techniques. The implant stability quotient (ISQ) and the position of the implant were evaluated. Statistical analysis was carried out. RESULTS In the control group, three implants were placed in the central portion of the bone septum, while eight implants were placed with a tilted axis in relation to the septum; in the test group, all implants were placed in ideal positions within the root extraction sockets. The different position of the implants between the two procedures was statistically significant. CONCLUSION This work presented an innovative approach for implant placement at the time of mandibular molar extraction. Preparing the implant bed with an ultrasonic device before root extraction is a simple technique and also allows greater stability to be reached in a selective case.

Abstract
Sinus augmentation procedure has been demonstrated to be a highly predictable treatment in posterior maxilla atrophy. All the surgical interventions in the maxillary region require deep knowledge of anatomy and possible anatomical variations. In this article, pre-operative and post- operative assessments of sinus cavity as well as novel approaches to deepen our knowledge of the behavior of bone substitute materials are described. The awareness of the patient's morphologic conditions enables exact planning of invasive surgery and aids to avoid complications. Pre- operative radiologic evaluation of the region before sinus lift is advisable both for a planning of the sinus augmentation and for selection and alignment of the optimum placement of implants. On the orthopantomography it is possible to measure the vertical dimension of graft, but not the volume and 3D changes. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become the "gold standard" to plan a comprehensive implant treatment and to achieve a post-operative assessment. A computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technique is proposed to produce custom-made block grafts for sinus lift procedure, and a customized cutting guide to accurately place the lateral wall and ease membrane elevation. This procedure allows to reduce intervention time, to precisely adapt the scaffold, to reduce risk of complications and to improve operation quality. Recently, a novel approach has been used to deepen our knowledge of the behavior of BSBs: by means of synchrotron micro-tomography (SCT). It is a 3-D analyzing method, suitable to examine the dynamic and spatial arrangement of regenerative phenomena in complex anatomical structures such as bone, where tissues with several morphologies (alveolar process, unmineralized extracellular matrix, regenerated vessels, etc.) compete to achieve the final goal of bone regeneration.

Abstract
Various grafts or combination of bone substitute materials have been used in sinus lift procedures. Currently, ongoing developments in several disciplines, from molecular biology and chemistry to computer science and engineering, have contributed to the understanding of biological processes leading to bone healing after the use of bone substitute materials (BSBs) and therefore of the behavior of BSBs. The understanding of the properties of each graft enables individual treatment concepts and therefore allows shift from a simple replacement material to the modern concept of an individually created composite biomaterial. Indeed, the choice of the best BSB still remains crucial for success in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. The present article provides an overview of most of the materials currently available for sinus lift, with a specific focus on their histological, molecular, cellular and pharmaceutical aspects.

Abstract
This study evaluated four implant surfaces in a minipig model: (1) Kohno Straight dual-engineered surface (DES) (Sweden & Martina); (2) SLActive (Straumann); (3) SM Biotite-H coated with Brushite (DIO); and (4) UF hybrid sandblasted and acid etched (HAS) (DIO). The surfaces presented different topographic features on the macro-, micro-, and nanoscales. After 12 weeks in vivo, significant differences were observed in bone-to-implant contact. UF HAS, presenting moderate microroughness and high nanoroughness, showed some advantage compared to nanorough SM Biotite-H and SLActive. A more pronounced difference was observed between UF HAS and Kohno Straight DES, characterized by a nanosmooth surface. Newly formed bone was observed around all surfaces.

Abstract
Purpose The present case report presents the clinical results of delayed expansion of mandibles by ultrasonic surgery in case of mono edentulous. Materials and methods The patients with a residual alveolar ridge thickness between 2,3 and 4,1 mm in the coronal area of posterior mandible was threated. In the first stage, four linear corticotomies were carried out by ultrasonic surgical device; bone expansion was not performed. After 4 weeks, in the second stage, adequate bone expansion, without compromising cortical vascularisation, by utilising a combination of scalpel, thin chisels and threaded osteotomes was achieved and one implant was placement, after filling the gaps with a cortico bovine biomaterial. Results The postoperative course was uneventful and final width ridge was 6,17±0,26mm. Conclusions The present case report showed that mandibular ridge expansion using a delayed split-crest technique by means of ultrasonic surgery and association with biomaterial clinically lead to a good horizontal bone gain with no fractures of the buccal plate and high implant success rate.

Abstract
Background: Many bone substitutes have been applied for sinus regeneration procedures, such as autogenous bone, inorganic bovine bone, porous and resorbable hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, bioactive glass, and blood clots. The aim of the present study was a tomographic, histological and histomorphometrical evaluation in humans, of specimens retrieved from sinuses augmented with MgHA/collagen-based scaffolds, after a healing period of 6 months. Materials and Methods: Eleven healthy patients and a total of 15 sinuses were included in this study. The maxillary sinuses were filled with commercial MgHA/collagen-based scaffolds (RegenOss) with a porous three-dimensional (3D) structure (Fin-Ceramica Faenza S.p.A., Faenza, Italy). These grafts have a composite design, that replicate the organization of bone structure, obtained by a technique in which a specific hybrid organic–inorganic composite is spontaneously built by a biological mechanism. The CBCT scans were done before the procedure, after the surgical protocol (T1), and 6 months after sinus surgery (T2) for implantology. Bone specimens were stored in 10% formalin solution, embedded in a glycolmethacrylate resin and sectioned by a high-precision diamond disc. Histologic and histomorphometric analysis were carried out to evaluate the graft reabsorption and bone healing. Results: The mean volume after graft elevation, calculated for each of the 15 sinuses, was 2,906 mm3 in the immediate postoperative period (5–7 days), ranging from 2,148.8 to 3,146.4 mm3. In the late postoperative period (6 months) it was 2,806.7 mm3, ranging from 2,010.9 to 3,008.9 mm3. The sinuses were completely healed and no residual MgHA/collagen-based scaffolds were visible. Osteoblasts appeared actively secreting bone matrix and marrow spaces contained moderate numbers of stromal cells and vascular network. Osteoblasts were observed actively secreting osteoid matrix. The tissues present in the samples were composed of 1.9 ± 1.9% of lamellar bone, 36 ± 1% of woven bone and 58 ± 3.8% of marrow spaces. Conclusion: Mg-MgHA/collagen-based scaffolds can successfully be used for sinus augmentation procedures.

Abstract
PURPOSE This human case series presents the clinical and histologic results of five cases of peri-implantitis with subsequent sinus graft infections. Complications may follow maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. It is possible to have an inflammatory reaction, movement of the implant inside the sinus, formation of an insufficient quantity of osseous tissue, and the production of an oroantral fistula. Complications following maxillary subantral augmentation procedures are relatively rare; however, the risks and benefits of any surgery must be carefully evaluated at the onset. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this case series, bacterial proliferation from infected implants into the grafted biomaterial in sinus cavities was examined. In five cases, removal of infected implants from augmented sinuses did not result in resolution of the infection, but rather in persistence of the infection in the area of the sinus augmentation procedure. Intraoral examination revealed edema/redness in two cases and edema and sinus tract formation in another case. In all cases, surgical curettage of the affected maxillary sinuses was performed. The inserted biomaterials and the accompanying inflammatory tissue infiltrate were totally removed with curettes. The sample was sent for a histopathologic examination. The maxillary sinuses were filled with an autologous platelet gel. RESULTS Necrotic bone was found lining the different biomaterial grafts. Macrophages were observed around the grafted particles. No blood vessels were observed. CONCLUSION This case series is the first to document the spread of infection from an implant surface to the entirety of the graft in the maxillary antrum. Complete removal of all infected bone graft material is the treatment of choice in such cases.

Abstract
The successful clinical use of implants with microrough titanium surfaces has paved the way for the further development of surface topographies to promote enhanced peri-implant bone apposition during the early stages of bone regeneration. The aim of this study is to determine the torque resistance of the implant-bone interface of plasma sprayed titanium endosseous implants placed in the rabbit tibia in three different situations. Hydroxyapatite (HA) particles with a size ranging from 250 to 450 microm were used in the present study to fill out 6 mm bony defects created in rabbit tibia. Fourteen mature New Zealand white male rabbits, weighing about 2.5 Kg., were used in this study. The test sites were filled with HA and the non-grafted sites were used as control. A total of 28 bone defects (14 without HA and 14 with HA.) were created. Implants with plasma-spray surface were subsequently inserted. Six additional rabbits were used; in these animals no bone defects were created. The implant sites were divided into three groups: 1) implants inserted in the tibia without bone defects; 2) implants inserted in the tibia with bone defects not filled with HA; 3) implants inserted in the tibia with bone defects filled with HA particles. The purpose of this study is to measure reverse-torque in three different situations of clinically similar implant geometry in the articulation of rabbits. The null hypothesis stated that there is a difference in reversal torque between the bone regeneration with HA, native bone and bone defect without bone regeneration. Additionally, comparison between these 6-month data and the 3-month data from a previous study led to the following conclusions: a significant difference exists in the removed torque for the TPS implants in the bone regenerated by HA and native bone; increase in removal torque values was seen for the implant inserted in bone regenerated by HA compared to the implant nated in bone without biomaterials. In conclusion, bone regenerated with biomaterials possesses different mechanical characteristics to native bone.

Abstract
Dental implants are a successful treatment modality for missing teeth; however, failures do occur. These failures can occur early in the healing process after primary stability has been achieved at the time of implant placement, or after initial bone remodeling and new bone growth have taken place. The ability to detect implants that are failing or will fail is still not possible. The aim of the present study is to see if correlations exist between RFA values and histologic and histochemical evaluation of the human retrieved implants for failure. In a 5 year period, 37 root form implants were retrieved because of mobility and underwent histological examination. Thin ground sections were obtained from each implant. All the implants had been removed with a 5 mm trephine. In all cases a peri-implant radiolucency was present. Before implant retrieval, the implant stability was evaluated with Osstell (Integration Diagnostics AB, Gothenburg, Sweden). All the implants were not osseointegrated clinically and mobility was present. Radiographically, bone loss was observed around the implants and the mean ISQ values was 37 (+/- 2.7). A scarce inflammatory cell infiltrate was present in the connective tissue of some specimens. In about 10 percent of specimens, the epithelium tended to surround the total perimeter of the implant. These data suggest that implants with an ISQ<40 are irretrievably lost and there is no possibility to save them. A statistically significant correlation was found between an ISQ<36 and irretrievably failed implants.

Abstract
Biological and technical failures of implants have already been reported. Mechanical factors are certainly of importance in implant failures, even if their exact nature has not yet been established. The abutment screw fracture or loosening represents a rare, but quite unpleasant failure. The aim of the present research is an analysis and structural examination of screw thread or abutment loosening compared with screw threads or abutment without loosening. The loosening of screw threads was compared to screw thread without loosening of three different implant systems; Branemark (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden), T.B.R. implant systems (Benax, Ancona, Italy) and Restore (Lifecore Biomedical, Chaska, Minnesota, USA). In this study broken screws were excluded. A total of 16 screw thread loosenings were observed (Group I) (4 Branemark, 4 T.B.R and 5 Restore), 10 screw threads without loosening were removed (Group II), and 6 screw threads as received by the manufacturer (unused) (Group III) were used as control (2 Branemark, 2 T.B.R and 2 Restore). The loosened abutment screws were retrieved and analyzed under SEM. Many alterations and deformations were present in concavities and convexities of screw threads in group I. No macroscopic alterations or deformations were observed in groups II and III. A statistical difference of the presence of microcracks were observed between screw threads with an abutment loosening and screw threads without an abutment loosening.

Abstract
The purpose of the present microbiological study was to evaluate bacterial leakage at implant-abutment connection level of a new type of implant (Storm implant (FMD, Falappa Medical Devices®, Rome, Italy) using Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). This implant presents a polygonal external implantabutment connection with a geometry that provides a hex on which engage complementary abutments. To identify the capability of the implant to protect the internal space from the external environment, the passage of genetically modified Escherichia coli across implant-abutment interface was evaluated. Four Storm implants (FMD, Falappa Medical Devices®, Rome, Italy) were immerged in a bacterial culture for 24 h and bacteria amount was measured inside implant-abutment interface with Real-time PCR. Bacteria were detected inside all studied implants, with a median percentage of 15% for P. gingivalis and 14% for T. forsythia. Our results are similar to those reported in the English literature. Additional studies are needed to explore the relationship in terms of microbiota between the internal implant and implant-prosthetic connection. In addition, the dynamics of internal colonization needs to be thoroughly documented in longitudinal in vivo studies. As a result, microbial leakage along the implant abutment interface was acceptable and considered the most probable explanation for peri-implantitis.

Abstract
Bacterial leakage at the implant-abutment connection of a two-piece implant system is considered the main cause of peri-implantitis. Prevention of bacterial leakage at the implant-abutment connection is mandatory for reducing inflammation process around implant neck and achieving bone stability. Micro-cavities at implant-abutment connection level can favour bacterial leakage, even in modern two-piece implant systems. The conical connection with an internal octagon (CCIO) is considered to be more stable mechanically and allows a more tight link between implant and abutment. As P. gingivalis and T. forsythia penetration might have clinical relevance, it was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate molecular leakage of these two bacteria in a new two-implant system with an internal conical implant-abutment connection with internal octagon (Shiner XT, FMD Falappa Medical Devices S.p.A. Rome, Italy). To verify the ability of the implant in protecting the internal space from the external environment, the passage of genetically modified Escherichia c oli across implant-abutment interface was evaluated. Four Shiner XT implants (FMD, Falappa Medical Devices®, Rome, Italy) were immerged in a bacterial culture for 24 h and bacteria amount was measured inside implant-abutment interface with Real-time PCR. Bacteria were detected inside all studied implants, with a median percentage of 6% for P. gingivalis and 5% for T. forsythia. Other comparable studies about the tightness of the tested implant system reported similar results. The gap size at the implant-abutment connection of CCIOs was measured by other authors discovering a gap size of 1–2μm of the AstraTech system and of 4μm for the Ankylos system. Bacterial leakage along implant-abutment connection of cylindrical and tapered implants, Shiner XT, (FMD Falappa Medical Devices S.p.A. Rome, Italy) showed better results compared to other implants. Additional studies are needed to explore the relationship in terms of microbiota of the CCIO. In addition, the dynamics of internal colonization needs to be thoroughly documented in longitudinal in vivo studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Implant sealing capability is a crucial issue in assessment of implant success and peri-implant marginal bone loss. Clinical studies demonstrated presence of viable bacteria in the internal part of functioning implants during tissue healing. For this study, a volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission test was developed to evaluate the existing "seal" between implant and healing screw. Two kinds of implant-screw connection were compared: 1) internal hexagon; and 2) cone Morse. METHODS Fifteen patients were enrolled in the study, three males and 12 females, who required fixed prosthetic rehabilitation. A total of 37 implants was placed, 23 with a cone Morse taper internal connection and 14 with a screw-retained internal hexagon abutment. VOCs real-time measures were performed in the implant site immediately after removing the healing screw. RESULTS Statistical analysis was carried out. Results showed VOCs maximum peak amplitude in cone Morse versus internal hexagon showed significant difference (P <0.001), whereas VOCs time to peak showed no significant difference (P = 0.7). CONCLUSIONS Use of the new methodology for the VOCs emission test may lead to important new data for understanding how the "failed" attachment of implant components, in two-part assemblies, may contribute to implant losses. In particular, study results support the hypothesis that the microgap of the implant-screw healing junction could cause differences in bacterial penetration. VOCs emission test evaluation represents a new diagnostic tool with an effective approach to quickly analyze, in real time, sealing capability of dental implants with healing screw interfaces.

This paper aims to explore the bacteriostatic and cytotoxic characteristics of nano-TiO2 coated specimens of glass, stainless steel and ceramic with different thickness and roughness. The results show that stainless steel and glass specimens with a nano-TiO2 coating thickness of 200 nm have a bacteriostatic effect of 97% and 100%, respectively after 30 minutes of UV exposure. Glass specimens with a nano-TiO2 coating thickness of 750, 200 and 50 nm have a bacteriostatic effect of 86%, 93% and 100% after 60 minutes. Nano-TiO2 coatings show a great bacteriostatic but not a cytotoxic effect, thus representing a valuable alternative for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Background. Oral rehabilitation of partially fully edentulous patients with dental implants has become a routine procedure in clinical practice. In a site with a lack of bone GBR is a surgical procedure that provides an augmentation in terms of volume for the insertion of dental implants. Materials and Methods. In the iliac crest of six sheep 4 defects were created where an implant was inserted, three of them with different biomaterials and a control site. All animals were sacrificed after a 4-month healing period. All specimens were processed and analyzed with histomorphometry. Statistical evaluation was done to evaluate percentage of bone defect filled by new bone. Results. All experimental groups showed an increase of the new bone. Higher and highly statistically significant differences were found in the percentages of bone defect filled by new bone in group filled with corticocancellous 250-1000 microns particulate porcine bone mix. Conclusions. This study demonstrates that particulate porcine bone mix and porcine corticocancellous collagenate prehydrated bone mix when used as scaffold are able to induce bone regeneration. Moreover, these data suggest that these biomaterials have higher biocompatibility and are capable of inducing faster and greater bone formation.

Abstract
Direct laser metal forming (DLMF) is a procedure in which a high-power laser beam is directed on a metal powder bed and programmed to fuse particles according to a computer-aided design file, thus generating a thin metal layer. With DLMF, it is now possible to fabricate dental implants with a superficial porous surface. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the peri-implant soft tissues around human-retrieved DLMF dental implants. Collagen fibers, in the form of bundles, were oriented perpendicularly to a distance of 100 μm from the surface, where they became parallel, running in several directions. In some portions, only a few collagen fiber bundles appeared to be oriented perpendicularly or obliquely to the plane of the section. Collagen fibers appeared to form a dense chaotic three-dimensional network running in different, more or less parallel directions to the surface. Under scanning electron microscopy, an intimate contact of the fibrous matrix with the implant surface was evident, and some collagen bundles could be seen to bind directly to the metal surface. By changing the surface microtexture, it was possible to change the response of the peri-implant soft tissues.

Abstract
Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were cultured onto CAD/CAM zirconia (Group A), CAD/CAM zirconia after polishing (Group B), CAD/CAM lithium disilicate after polishing (Group C), and feldspathic ceramic (Group D) to evaluate their proliferation and adhesion potential. After 3 h, HGF adhesion was similar in all groups. Later, HGFs closely adhered to surfaces, particularly onto groups B, C and D, acquiring an elongated shape. Proliferation assay showed no differences in cell viability among the groups after 24 h, while significant increase was shown after 72 h in Groups B and C. After 24 h, similar Collagen I levels were found in all groups, while after 72 h Groups B and C revealed a deep reduction in respect to the 24 h level. In vitro, HGF behavior may reflect variability in soft tissue response to different surface materials for prosthetic restorations, and support that polished zirconia is able to achieve a better integration in vivo in respect to the other materials.

Abstract
The quality of bathing water is fundamental, not only from an environmental point of view but also due to the economic importance of tourism. This paper examines the water profile in the coastal belt of the province of Pescara (Italy, Central Adriatic Sea) with reference to the microbiological parameters Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci required by Directive 2006/07 of European Commission. The water quality of 15 coastal beaches was surveyed; data were produced from monitoring and controls made available by the Abruzzo Regional Environmental Prevention and Protection Agency (ARTA) and extracted and elaborated for the period of interest (2010-2013). Statistical analysis was used to confirm the aspects deduced from mean values of monitoring and control data for each stretch. The data highlight critical situations in various parts of the coast; these problems can be attributed to river pollution, mainly due to the malfunctioning of the treatment plants for urban wastewater.
