Abstract
A comparison of the rates of growth and ethanol production by 11 different strains of
Zymomonas
revealed a wide range of characteristics, with some strains being more tolerant of high sugar or ethanol concentrations and high incubation temperatures than others. Some strains were unable to utilize sucrose; others produced large amounts of levan, and one strain grew well but produced no levan. One strain, CP4, was considerably better in all respects than most of the other strains and was chosen as a starting strain for genetic improvement of ethanol production.

Abstract
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) established long-term persistent infection in intracerebrally inoculated athymic nude mice. After intraperitoneal injection into outbred mice, virus was isolated for only 3 days from spleens and livers. In vitro inoculation of outbred mouse spleen fragments with IBRV resulted in persistent infection and subsequent transformation of spleen macrophages. The IBRV-specific membrane and intracellular antigens were detected by indirect immunofluorescence techniques in transformed cells in early in vitro passages. The presence of IBRV genetic formation was confirmed by in situ hybridization. The IBRV-transformed mouse macrophages induced fibrosarcomas and cystic tumors in athymic nude mice. Infective virus could not be rescued from transformed cells by cocultivation with rabbit kidney cells, treatment with iododeoxyuridine, or ultraviolet irradiation.

Abstract
Psorergates (Psorobia) sp were recovered from dermal cysts on the face, chest, and abdomen of three stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) in a breeding colony of research animals. The lesions were multiple and appeared as white, crusted structures measuring 2 to 10 mm in diameter. These lesions were not associated with pruritus or other clinical symptoms. The mites were embedded in the epidermis and associated with mild hyperkeratosis. A few mononuclear leukocytes were present in the dermal and subcutaneous tissues.

Abstract
Skull fractures resulting from trauma and leading to hemorrhage in the subdural area and brain parenchymal have been a common cause of neonatal mortality in a breeding colony of squirrel monkeys. The skull fractures may have been caused by abnormal carrying behavior by the dam or by the dam being frightened while cradling the infant during nursing.

Abstract
A thorough knowledge of the surgical anatomy of the sellar region is prerequisite to understanding the symptoms and the pathophysiology of diseases in this area. The differential diagnoses of sellar and parasellar lesions includes pituitary tumor, craniopharyngioma, carotid aneurysm, empty sellar syndrome, metastatic tumor, optic or hypothalamus glioma, meningioma, chordoma, mucocele, and bony tumor of the sphenoid sinus. The preoperative evaluation should encompass the consultations of an endocrinologist, an ophthalmologist, and a neurosurgeon.

Abstract
Infection of CD-1 mouse embryo fibroblast(s) (MEF) with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) strain HMC resulted in persistent infection and subsequent transformation of these cells. IBRV-transformed MEF cultures consisted of short fibroblastoid cells, and IBRV-specific membrane and intracellular antigens were detectable in early in vitro passages by indirect imunofluorescence (IF) techniques. The presence of IBRV genetic information was confirmed in IF-positive and IF-negative cells by in situ hybridization. IBRV-transformed MEF induced fibrosarcomas in athymic nude mice given sc transplants. Infectious virus could not be rescued from the transformed cells or from tumor cells by cocultivation with rabbit kidney cells, by treatment with 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine, or by UV irradiation. Nontransformed control cells did not survive more than 10 in vitro passages and did not induce tumors when transplanted to athymic nude mice. These observations represent new data concerning the mouse cell-transforming potential of IBRV and confirm the presence of at least part of the virus genome in the transformants.

Abstract
With the use of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), attempts were made to infect epithelial nasopharyngeal explant cell cultures prepared from nonmalignant human and squirrel monkey tissue. Explants were exposed to EBV from both HR-1 and B95-8 cells and examined for EBV-specific antigens by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Among the human specimens, no epithelial nasopharyngeal were found that could be infected with EBV. However, similar explants derived from squirrel monkey tissue were infected. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that EBV can infect at least certain explanted epithelial cells of the nasopharynx.

Abstract
Transforming Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was inoculated into eight squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) by spraying of viral concentrates into the nose and throat. Virus was inoculated into three marmosets (two Saguinus oedipus and one Calithrix jacchus jacchus) by direct injection into nasopharyngeal tissue. Two of these squirrel monkeys seroconverted after repeated inoculation as determined by the presence of EBV-specific antibodies to early antigen and viral capsid antigen. One squirrel monkey had antibody to EBV nuclear antigen only. One S. oedipus marmoset also seroconverted. None of the animals developed disease. The results show that seroconversion can be accomplished in squirrel monkeys after spraying of EBV into the nasopharynx, and in marmosets by direct inoculation of the virus into nasopharyngeal tissue.

Abstract
A simple and safe technique for the sublabial transseptal transsphenoidal approach to the hypophysis and parasellar region is described. A review of the literature reveals that this technique and other transsphenoidal routes to the hypophysis were performed more than half a century ago. These procedures fell into disfavor because fo low magnification and insufficient illumination of the operative field, infection and inadequate postoperative endocrine replacement therapy. With today's antibiotic therapy and hormonal replacement, plus the use of the operating microscope, the transsphenoidal route to the hypophysis has gained renewed interest among neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists. Each of the transsphenoidal routes and the advantages of the "from below" approach are described. The applications of transsphenoidal approach and the nonsurgical modalities for hypophysectomy are reviewed. The simplicity and safety of the sublabial transseptal transsphenoidal approach depend on a thorough familiarity with the surgical anatomy, proper positioning of the patient, and the availability of appropriate instrumentation. Photographs of specially prepared whole head anatomical specimens plus skull dissections with radiographic correlation illustrate the pertinent anatomy. Some of the vital structures to be identified and avoided are the optic canals, carotid arteries, circular sinuses, cavernous sinuses, III, IV, V, VI cranial nerves, foramen rotundum, medial walls of the orbits, medial walls of maxillary sinuses, medial pterygoid plates and pterygoid canals. A method for preoperative determination of key distances within the patient's skull is described along with other preoperative tests. This paper discusses the self-retaining speculum and other new instruments for this procedure. A gauge mounted on the front end of the speculum is calibrated to measure the size of the opening at the tip of the speculum. Thirty cases are included in this report, six of which are presented in detail. No operative mortality, CSF rhinorrhea, visual damage carotid or cavernous sinus hemorrhage fracture of the medial pterygoid plates or maxilla were encountered in this series. Three patients developed diabetes insipidus and two patients had meningitis which responded to antibiotic therapy.

Abstract
We describe a new technique for extensive retropositioning of the soft palate for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency. This technique is identified as a nasopharyngeal pushback, and has been used repeatedly in conjunction with both a Cronin nasal flap and a superiorly based pharyngeal flap when maximum retropositioning was needed. This procedure has been used for over ten years, each time obtaining an additional pushback distance equal to or greater than the distance achieved by freeling the soft palate from the posterior border of the hard palate.
