Abstract
The pyrimidine derivative (4,6-dimethyl-N-phenyldiethyl pyrimidine, DPDP) was tested as a foliar spray fungicide at 50 mg l−1 for protection of eggplant (Solanum melongena) from spot disease caused by Alternaria alternata. Varied concentrations of DPDP (10–50 mg l−1) differentially inhibited mycelial growth, conidial count and conidial germination of A. alternata growth in vitro; the magnitude of inhibition increased with increasing concentration. In vivo, an experiment was conducted in pots using a complete block randomized design and repeated twice with three replications and four treatments (control, A. alternata alone, DPDP alone and combination of DPDP and A. alternata) for 5 weeks (1 plant in pot × 3 pots per set (3 replications per treatment) × 4 sets (4 treatments) × 5 weeks × 2 experimental repetitions = 120 pots). In this experiment, 10-day-old eggplant seedlings were transplanted in pots and then inoculated with A. alternata, DPDP or their combination 1 week later. Leaves of the A. alternata-infected eggplant suffered from chlorosis, necrosis and brown spots during the subsequent 5 weeks. Disease intensity was obvious in infected leaves but withdrawn by DPDP. There were relationships between incidence and severity, greater in plant leaves infected A. alternata alone and diminished with the presence of DPDP. Moreover, the infection resulted in reductions in growth, decreases in contents of anthocyanins, chlorophylls, carotenoids and thiols as well as inhibitions in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Nonetheless, the application of DPDP at 50 mg led to a recovery of the infected eggplant; the infection-induced deleterious effects were mostly reversed by DPDP. However, treatment with DPDP alone seemed with no significant impacts. Due to its safe use to host and the inhibition for the pathogen, DPDP could be suggested as an efficient fungicide for protection of eggplant to control A. alternata spot disease.

Abstract
The reaction of 6-amino-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (1) as a binucleophile with primary aromatic or heterocyclic amines and formaldehyde or aromatic (heterocyclic) aldehydes in a molar ratio (1:1:2) gave the pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidin-2,4-dione ring systems 2–5. Treatment of 1 with diamines and formalin in molar ratio (2:1:4) gave the bis-pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidin-2,4-diones 6–8. Furthermore, substituted pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidin-2,4-diones with uracil derivative 11 or spiro indole 16 were synthesized. Synthesis of pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidin-2,4-diones with different substitution at C-5 and C-7 was achieved to give 13 and 18, respectively.

Abstract
A class of hybrid molecules consisting of 4-aminoquinoline and pyrimidine were synthesized and tested for antimalarial activity against both chloroquine (CQ)-sensitive (D6) and chloroquine (CQ)-resistant (W2) strains of Plasmodium falciparum through an in vitro assay. Eleven hybrids showed better antimalarial activity against both CQ-sensitive and CQ-resistant strains of P. falciparum in comparison to standard drug CQ. Four molecules were more potent (7-8-fold) than CQ in D6 strain, and eight molecules were found to be 5-25-fold more active against resistant strain (W2). Several compounds did not show any cytotoxicity up to a high concentration (60 μM), others exhibited mild toxicities, but the selective index for the antimalarial activity was very high for most of these hybrids. Two compounds selected for in vivo evaluation have shown excellent activity (po) in a mouse model of Plasmodium berghei without any apparent toxicity. The X-ray crystal structure of one of the compounds was also determined.

Abstract
A series of [2-(substituted phenyl)-imidazol-1-yl]-pyridin-3-yl-methanones (1-11) were synthesized and screened for their antimicrobial and antimycobacterial activities. Further, a series of [2-(substituted phenyl)-benzimidazol-1-yl]-pyridin-3-yl-methanones (12-20) reported in our earlier study was also screened for their antimycobacterial activity. The antimycobacterial activity results indicated that [2-(4-Nitro-phenyl)-imidazol-1-yl]-pyridin-3-yl-methanone (8, minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 3.13 µg) was equipotent as standard drug ciprofloxacin and [2-(4-Nitro-phenyl)-benzimidazol-1-yl]-pyridin-3-yl-methanone (16, MIC = 1.56 µg) was equipotent as standard drug ethambutol. The results of antimicrobial screening demonstrated that 2-[1-(Pyridine-3-carbonyl)-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-benzoic acid (compound 11, MIC = 0.002 µg) was two times more effective than standard drug ciprofloxacin (MIC = 0.004 µg) against tested bacterial strains and [2-(2,5-Dimethyl-phenyl)-imidazol-1-yl]-pyridin-3-yl-methanone (compound 3, MIC = 0.005 µg) was equipotent to the reference compound, fluconazole against tested fungal strains.

Abstract
Twelve new 4-(1H-indol-3-yl)-6-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-ones/thiones (7-18) have been synthesized by reacting 1-aryl-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)-2-propen-1-one with urea and thiourea in ethanolic potassium hydroxide. Their structures have been confirmed by IR, 1H NMR and mass spectral data. The compounds were tested for their anti-inflammatory activity. Test results revealed that compounds showed 49.5 to 70.7% anti-inflammatory activity where-as the standard drug ibuprofen showed 86.4% activity at the same oral dose. Four compounds, 4-(1H-indol-3-yl)-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-one (8), 4-(1H-indol-3-yl)-6-(4-methylphenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-one (10), 4-(1H-indol-3-yl)-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-thione (14), 4-(1H-indol-3-yl)-6-(4-methylphenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-thione (16), that showed significant anti-inflammatory activity were selected to study their ulcerogenic and lipid peroxidation activities. All tested compounds showed significant reduction in the ulcerogenic potential and lipid peroxidation compared to the standard drug ibuprofen.

Abstract
In the molecule of the title compound, C13H10ClNO, the benzene and pyrrole rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 7.37 (12)°. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into centrosymmetric R22(10) dimers. There are C—H⋯π interactions between benzene and pyrrole rings and a benzene C—H group. A weak π–π interaction between the pyrrole rings [centroid–centroid distance 3.8515 (11) Å] further stabilizes the structure. There is also a π interaction between the pyrrole ring and the carbonyl group, with a carbon–centroid distance of 3.4825 (18) Å.

Abstract
A number of amidine derivatives (3a-i) were synthesized by condensation of cyanopyridine and cyanopyrazine with sulfonylhydrazides in the presence of sodium methoxide. 2-Acetylpyridine and 4-acetylpyridine were condensed with sulfonylhydrazides by microwave irradiation in solid phase to give corresponding hydrazones (5a-d). Indole-3-carboxaldehyde was condensed with sulfonylhydrazides by refluxing in acetic acid to give corresponding condensation product (5e and f). All the compounds, that is, 3a-i and 5a-f were purified by crystallization or by column chromatography. Structures of all the synthesized compounds are supported by correct IR, (1)H NMR, mass spectral and analytical data. Anti-inflammatory activity evaluation was carried out using carrageenin-induced paw oedema assay and compounds 3e,f and 5e exhibited good anti-inflammatory activity, that is 52%, 37% and 38% at 50 mg/kg po, respectively. Analgesic activity evaluation was carried out using acetic acid writhing assay and compounds 3a,c,e and 5f showed good analgesic activity, that is, 50%, 50%, 50% and 60% at 50 mg/kg po, respectively.

Abstract
A series of N-(acridin-9-yl)-4-(benzo[d]imidazol/oxazol-2-yl) benzamides has been synthesized by the condensation of 9-aminoacridine derivatives with benzimidazole or benzoxazole derivatives. Condensation of 2-hydroxy naphthaldehyde with functionalized diamines leads to the formation of Schiff's bases and not imidazole derivatives. All these compounds were characterized by correct FT-IR, (1)H NMR, MS and elemental analyses. These compounds were screened for anti-inflammatory, analgesic and kinase (CDK-1, CDK-5 and GSK-3) inhibition activities. Compounds 11 and 7e(f) showed good anti-inflammatory (35.8% at 50 mg/kg po) activity and good analgesic activity (60% at 50 mg/kg po), respectively. Compound 3b showed significant in vitro activity against CDK-5 (IC(50)=4.6 microM) and CDK-1(IC(50)=7.4 microM) and compound 3a showed moderate CDK-5 inhibitory activity (IC(50)=7.5 microM). The other compounds showed moderate anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities.
