Wastewater reuse in irrigation: a microbiological perspective on implications in soil fertility and human and environmental health

Assessment of phytotoxicity of treated water of Tabuk wastewater plant by different technologies on seed germination of chick pea (Cicer arietinum)

The use of reclaimed water as an alternative source is a sustainable way forward for an arid country like The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The sewage contains organic and inorganic pollutants from households and industrial sources that may not be removed during treatment. In this study, seeds of Cicer arietinum were germinated using six different concentrations of treated water from the Tabuk wastewater treatment plant and tap water was used as control. The physicochemical properties such as total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, and turbidity values of treated water were higher, which gradually decreased on dilution with tap water. The amount of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate was in higher concentration in treated water as compared to control. The use of 40% treated water (T3) improved the germination percentage, speed of germination and germination index of C. arietinum. The phytotoxicity test reveals that undiluted treated water (T6) is not fit for direct use on plants. All the investigated treatments confirmed that the use of more than 40% of treated water decreased the fresh weight and dry weight of the seedlings as compared to control. The results are encouraging and help in attaining water sustainability in the Tabuk region.

Does Irrigation with Treated and Untreated Wastewater Increase Antimicrobial Resistance in Soil and Water: A Systematic Review

Population growth and water scarcity necessitate alternative agriculture practices, such as reusing wastewater for irrigation. Domestic wastewater has been used for irrigation for centuries in many historically low-income and arid countries and is becoming more widely used by high-income countries to augment water resources in an increasingly dry climate. Wastewater treatment processes are not fully effective in removing all contaminants, such as antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Literature reviews on the impact of wastewater irrigation on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment have been inconclusive and mostly focused on treated wastewater. We conducted the first systematic review to assess the impact of irrigation with both treated or untreated domestic wastewater on ARB and ARGs in soil and adjacent water bodies. We screened titles/abstracts of 3002 articles, out of which 41 were screened in full text and 26 were included in this review. Of these, thirteen investigated irrigation with untreated wastewater, and nine found a positive association with ARB/ARGs in soil. Out of thirteen studies focused on treated wastewater, six found a positive association with ARB/ARGs while six found mixed/negative associations. Our findings demonstrate that irrigation with untreated wastewater increases AMR in soil and call for precautionary action by field workers, their families, and consumers when untreated wastewater is used to irrigate crops. The effect of irrigation with treated wastewater was more variable among the studies included in our review, highlighting the need to better understand to what extent AMR is disseminated through this practice. Future research should assess factors that modify the effect of wastewater irrigation on AMR in soil, such as the degree and type of wastewater treatment, and the duration and intensity of irrigation, to inform guidelines on the reuse of wastewater for irrigation.

Horticultural products irrigated with treated sewage: are they acceptable?

Public acceptance of treated sewage (TS) reuse in agriculture is a key element in successful implementation of TS reuse projects, but relevant research on the topic is limited. This study examined public willingness to accept (WTA) and willingness to pay (WTP) for agricultural products derived by irrigation with TS in Lorestan province, Iran, applying the contingent valuation (CV) method. The agricultural products determined for the study included corn, peaches, apricots, and plums, while TS was introduced in three qualities [Q1, complete TS treatment (i.e., physical treatment, aeration, and chemical treatment); Q2, partial TS treatment (i.e., physical treatment and aeration); and Q3, no TS treatment]. With reference to WTA, products irrigated with Q1 TS received 62.7% positive responses, while products irrigated with Q2 TS and Q3 TS received 21.3% and 17.0% positive responses, respectively. With reference to WTP, data showed that if the price of products derived by irrigation with TS was less than that of products irrigated with fresh water, some people would be willing to pay for these products (52.0% positive responses versus 48.0% negative responses). Awareness had a significantly positive impact on WTA1 and WTA2 (products irrigated with Q1 TS and Q2 TS, respectively) as well as on WTP1, WTP2, and WTP3 (products irrigated with Q1 TS, Q2 TS, and Q3 TS, respectively). Similarly, information sources had a significantly positive effect on WTP1, WTP2, and WTP3. Overall, individuals with high levels of health risk perception and high awareness showed high WTA, while non-processed corn and men were associated with low WTA. Concerning WTP, individuals with high awareness and those who had access to information sources showed high WTP, while men were associated with low WTP. Information about the importance of TS reuse, reduction of prices of products derived by irrigation with TS, and promotion of public confidence in TS are essential to increase public WTA and WTP.

Worldwide Research Trends on Solar-Driven Water Disinfection

“Ensure access to water for all”, states Goal 6 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This worldwide challenge requires identifying the best water disinfection method for each scenario. Traditional methods have limitations, which include low effectiveness towards certain pathogens and the formation of disinfection byproducts. Solar-driven methods, such as solar water disinfection (SODIS) or solar photocatalysis, are novel, effective, and financially and environmentally sustainable alternatives. We have conducted a critical study of publications in the field of water disinfection using solar energy and, hereby, present the first bibliometric analysis of scientific literature from Elsevier’s Scopus database within the last 20 years. Results show that in this area of growing interest USA, Spain, and China are the most productive countries in terms of publishing, yet Europe hosts the most highly recognized research groups, i.e., Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, and UK. We have also reviewed the journals in which researchers mostly publish and, using a systematic approach to determine the actual research trends and gaps, we have analyzed the capacity of these publications to answer key research questions, pinpointing six clusters of keywords in relation to the main research challenges, open areas, and new applications that lie ahead. Most publications focused on SODIS and photocatalytic nanomaterials, while a limited number focused on ensuring adequate water disinfection levels, testing regulated microbial indicators and emerging pathogens, and real-world applications, which include complex matrices, large scale processes, and exhaustive cost evaluation.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes in different soil types irrigated with treated wastewater

Diminishing freshwater (FW) supplies necessitate the reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) for various purposes, like irrigation of agricultural lands. However, there is a growing concern that irrigation with TWW may transfer antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to the soil and crops. We hypothesized that TWW irrigation would increase the prevalence of antibiotic residues together with the corresponding ARGs in the irrigated soil. We further predicted that soil texture, especially pH, clay content, and organic matter variabilities, would change the antibiotic residues concentrations and thus ARGs dissemination. To test our predictions, three soils types (loamy-sand, loam, and clay) were irrigated with two water types (FW and TWW), over two consecutive seasons. We monitored physico-chemical parameters, the abundance of seven antibiotic residues, and their corresponding ARGs together with class 1 integron (intI1) in 54 water and soil samples collected at the end of the field experiments. The results revealed increase in antibiotics concentrations and ARGs relative abundance in TWW than FW. Yet, in the soil ARGs relative abundances were independent of the irrigation water quality, but dependent on the soil type, especially the clay content. Further, there were no clear associations between the targeted antibiotics or the presence of heavy metals and ARGs' relative abundance in the water or soil samples. Therefore, our results question the link between the discharge of antibiotics and heavy metals, and the dissemination of ARGs in soil environments.

The impact of antimicrobials on the efficiency of methane fermentation of sewage sludge, changes in microbial biodiversity and the spread of antibiotic resistance

The study was designed to simultaneously evaluate the influence of high doses (512-1024 µg/g) the most commonly prescribed antimicrobials on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, qualitative and quantitative changes in microbial consortia responsible for the fermentation process, the presence of methanogenic microorganisms, and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The efficiency of antibiotic degradation during anaerobic treatment was also determined. Metronidazole, amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin exerted the greatest effect on methane fermentation by decreasing its efficiency. Metronidazole, amoxicillin, cefuroxime and sulfamethoxazole were degraded in 100%, whereas ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid were least susceptible to degradation. The most extensive changes in the structure of digestate microbiota were observed in sewage sludge exposed to metronidazole, where a decrease in the percentage of bacteria of the phylum Bacteroidetes led to an increase in the proportions of bacteria of the phyla Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. The results of the analysis examining changes in the concentration of the functional methanogen gene (mcrA) did not reflect the actual efficiency of methane fermentation. In sewage sludge exposed to antimicrobials, a significant increase was noted in the concentrations of β-lactam, tetracycline and fluoroquinolone ARGs and integrase genes, but selective pressure was not specific to the corresponding ARGs.

Effect of copper and zinc as sulfate or nitrate salts on soil microbiome dynamics and blaVIM-positive Pseudomonas aeruginosa survival

The exposure of soil to metals and to antibiotic resistant bacteria may lead to the progressive deterioration of soil quality. The persistence of antibiotic resistant bacteria or antibiotic resistance genes in soil can be influenced by the microbial community or by soil amendments with metal salts. This work assessed the effect of soil amendment with copper and zinc, as sulfate or nitrate salts, on the fate of a carbapenem-resistant (bla_VIM⁺) hospital effluent isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (strain H1FC49) and on the variations of the microbial community composition. Microcosms with soil aged or not with copper and zinc salts (20 mM), and inoculated with P. aeruginosa H1FC49 were monitored at 0, 7, 14 and/or 30 days, for community composition (16S rRNA gene amplicon) and strain H1FC49 persistence. Data on culturable P. aeruginosa, quantitative PCR of the housekeeping gene ecf, and the presumably acquired genes bla_VIM⁺ and integrase (intI1), and community composition were interpreted based on descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis. P. aeruginosa and the presumably acquired genes, were quantifiable in soil for up to one month, in both metal-amended and non-amended soil. Metal amendments were associated with a significant decrease of bacterial community diversity and richness. The persistence of P. aeruginosa and acquired genes in soils, combined with the adverse effect of metals on the bacterial community, highlight the vulnerability of soil to both types of exogenous contamination.

Rethinking water treatment targets: Bacteria regrowth under unprovable conditions

Ozonation is among the currently used technologies to remove chemical and biological contaminants from secondary treated urban wastewater (UWW). Despite its effectiveness on the abatement of organic micropollutants (OMPs) and disinfection, previous studies have shown that regrow of bacteria may occur upon storage of the ozonated UWW. This reactivation has been attributed to the high content of assimilable organic carbon after treatment. In order to investigate if ozonation by-products are the main biological regrowth drivers in stored ozonated UWW, the ozonation surviving cells were resuspended in sterile bottled mineral water (MW), simulating a pristine oligotrophic environment. After 7 days storage, organisms such as Acinetobacter, Methylobacterium, Cupriavidus, Massilia, Acidovorax and Pseudomonas were dominant in both ozonated UWW and pristine MW, demonstrating that bacterial regrowth is not strictly related to the eventual presence of ozonation by-products, but instead with the ability of the surviving cells to cope with nutrient-poor environments. The resistome of UWW before and after ozonation was analysed by metagenomic techniques. Draft metagenome assembled genomes (dMAGs), recovered from both ozonated UWW and after cell resuspension in MW, harboured genes conferring resistance to diverse antibiotics classes. Some of these antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were located in the vicinity of mobile genetic elements, suggesting their potential to be mobilized. Among these, dMAGs affiliated to taxa with high relative abundance in stored water, such as P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp., harboured ARGs conferring resistance to 12 and 4 families of antibiotics, respectively, including those encoding carbapenem hydrolysing oxacillinases. The results herein obtained point out that the design and development of new wastewater treatment technologies should include measures to attenuate the imbalance of the bacterial communities promoted by storage of the final treated wastewater, even when applying processes with high mineralization rates.

Influence of Allyl Isothiocyanate on the Soil Microbial Community Structure and Composition during Pepper Cultivation

Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), as a fumigant, plays an important role in soil control of nematodes, soilborne pathogens, and weeds, but its effects on soil microorganisms are unclear. In this study, the effects of AITC on microbial diversity and community composition of Capsicum annuum L. soil were investigated through Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that microbial diversity and community structure were significantly influenced by AITC. AITC reduced the diversity of soil bacteria, stimulated the diversity of the soil fungal community, and significantly changed the structure of fungal community. AITC decreased the relative abundance of dominant bacteria Planctomycetes, Acinetobacter, Pseudodeganella, and RB41, but increased that of Lysobacter, Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Luteimonas, Pseudoxanthomonas, and Bacillus at the genera level, while for fungi, Trichoderma, Neurospora, and Lasiodiplodia decreased significantly and Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Saccharomyces were higher than the control. The correlation analysis suggested cellulase had a significant correlation with fungal operational taxonomic units and there was a significant correlation between cellulase and fungal diversity, while catalase, cellulose, sucrase, and urease were the major contributors in the shift of the community structure. Our results will provide useful information for the use of AITC in the assessment of environmental and ecological security.

Plant and soil microbial community responses to different water management strategies in an almond crop

Climate change is one of the main challenges facing the agricultural sector as it strives to meet global food needs. In arid and semiarid areas, the scarcity of water imposes the use of alternative sources - such as reclaimed water (RW) or desalinated water (DW) - and of deficit irrigation strategies, such as regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), in order to maintain productivity. The impact of both alternative water sources and RDI strategies on soil microbial communities in conjunction with the crop response has been little studied, and far less in fruit trees. Here, we evaluated the effects of the irrigation water quantity (RDI or the optimal water amount) and quality (DW or saline RW) on: i) the biomass, composition, and activity of the soil microbial community, and ii) the plant agro-physiological response at the level of the water status, nutrients, vegetative growth, and yield of almond trees. The DW-RDI treatment had a lower vegetative growth than the rest, reducing the nutrient requirements and increasing the contents of organic carbon and nitrogen in soil. This coincided with a significant increase in the bacterial biomass and enzyme activities in soil, as well as with a decrease in plant nutrient use efficiencies and yield. Irrigation with RW increased the fungal biomass. When there were no water restrictions (RW-FI), none of the plant agro-physiological parameters were affected; when RDI was applied (RW-RDI), the highest soil sodicity was reached and vegetative growth and yield were negatively affected, although the plant nutrient use efficiencies did not decrease as much as with DW-RDI. In addition, the plant nutrient use efficiencies were negatively correlated with the soil enzyme activities. These results improve our knowledge of the functioning of plant-soil interactions in Mediterranean crops subjected to different irrigation strategies.

Evaluation of three different concentration and extraction methods for recovery efficiency of human adenovirus and human rotavirus virus A

Routine wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) effluents monitoring is essential because of enteric viruses' low infectious dose beyond molecular detectability. In current study methods for concentration and extraction, inter-method compatibility and recovery efficiency of spiked human adenovirus (HAdV) and human rotavirus A (RVA) were evaluated. For virus concentration, polyethylene glycol precipitation (PEG), charged membrane-based adsorption/elution (CMAE), and glass wool-based concentration (GW) methods were used. Nucleic acid was extracted by PowerViral™ Environmental RNA/DNA Isolation (POW), ZymoBIOMICS™ RNA extraction (ZYMO) and Wizard® Genomic DNA Purification (WGDP) and samples were analyzed by Real-Time PCR. CMAE method yielded significantly higher concentrations for both ARQ (Armored-RNA Quant) and RVA compared to PEG (P =  0.001 and 0.003) and GW (P <  0.0001). Highest HAdV concentration was obtained by PEG (P =  0.001 and < 0.0001) in relation to CMAE and GW. ZYMO yielded a significantly higher ARQ and RVA concentrations (P =  0.03 and 0.0057), whereas significantly higher concentration was obtained by POW for HAdV (P =  0.032). CMAE × ZYMO achieved the highest recovery efficiencies for ARQ (69.77 %) and RVA (64.25, respectively, while PEG × POW present efficiency of 9.7 % for HAdV. These findings provide guidance for understanding of method-related biases for viral recovery efficiency.

Circular economy fertilization: Phycoremediated algal biomass as biofertilizers for sustainable crop production

There is an urgent need to meet the demand of water and nutrients by their reuse and recycling to gratify sustainable food production system and resource conservation. Chlorella minutissima was found to be very effective in the removal of electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids, phosphorous (P), potassium (K), ammonium, nitrate, biological oxygen demand (BOD₅) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of sewage wastewater. We tested the effects of phycoremediated algal biomass addition to soil in field plots of baby corn and spinach, on plant growth, yield and soil chemical properties. The application of 100% nitrogen (N) fertilizer by algal biomass lead to higher economic yield of spinach and baby corn than recommended dose of mineral fertilizers. The available N and P content in experimental plots applied with algae biomass as biofertilizers were significantly higher than other treatments. The soil enzymes, such as urease, nitrate reductase, and dehydrogenase were analysed during the cropping season of baby corn and spinach. The soil supplied with 100% N by algae biomass (C. minutissima) significantly (P < 0.05) increased the dehydrogenase activity in spinach grown soil. While the nitrate reductase activity in soil supplied with algal manure was maximum (0.13 mg NO₂-N produced g^-1 soil 24 h^-1) and significantly higher than other treatments in baby corn grown soil. This study revealed that phycoremediation coupled with biofertilizers production from algae biomass is a recycling and resource conservation exercise to reduce eutrophication, recycling of wastewater, recycling of plant nutrients and improvement of the soil quality in circular economy fertilization.

Treated Wastewater Irrigation—A Review

As the most important resource for life, water has been a central issue on the international agenda for several decades. Yet, the world’s supply of clean freshwater is steadily decreasing due to extensive agricultural demand for irrigated lands. Therefore, water resources should be used with greater efficiency, and the use of non-traditional water resources, such as Treated Wastewater (TW), should be increased. Reusing TW could be an alternative option to increase water resources. Thus, many countries have decided to turn wastewater into an irrigation resource to help meet urban demand and address water shortages. However, because of the nature of that water, there are potential problems associated with its use in irrigation. Some of the major concerns are health hazards, salinity build-up, and toxicity hazards. The objectives of this comprehensive literature review are to illuminate the importance of using TW in irrigation as an alternative freshwater source and to assess the effects of its use on soil fertility and other soil properties, plants, and public health. The literature review reveals that TW reuse has become part of the extension program for boosting water resource utilization. However, the uncontrolled application of such waters has many unfavorable effects on both soils and plants, especially in the long-term. To reduce these unfavorable effects when using TW in irrigation, proper guidelines for wastewater reuse and management should be followed to limit negative effects significantly.

Impact of irrigation with fish-processing effluents on nitrification and ammonia-oxidizer abundances in Patagonian arid soils

This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of irrigation with diluted fish-processing effluents on soil pH, electrical conductivity, nitrification rate and abundance of ammonia oxidizers. To accomplish that, we constructed microcosms of soil from an undisturbed arid ecosystem of Patagonia, and irrigated them for 2 months with diluted effluents from a fish-processing factory or with water as control. In the initial soil sample, and along the experiment, we determined soil pH, electrical conductivity, and the concentration of inorganic nitrogen forms, which we used to calculate the net nitrification rate. We further estimated the abundances of ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria in the initial soil sample and at the end of the experiment, by qPCR of amoA genes. Soil pH decreased and electrical conductivity increased in both irrigation treatments, although the effect was higher in effluent-irrigated microcosms. Soil nitrate + nitrite concentration, and thus the nitrification rate, was higher in effluent than in water-irrigated microcosms. The abundance of archaeal amoA genes was higher under effluent than water-irrigation, but that of bacterial amoA genes did not vary significantly between treatments. Neither ammonia-oxidizing archaea nor bacteria were influenced by the changes in soil pH and electrical conductivity induced by effluent irrigation.

Evaluation of irrigation suitability potential of brewery effluent post treated in a pilot horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland system: implications for sustainable urban agriculture

The use of untreated or partially treated wastewater reuse for urban and peri-urban agricultural irrigation is a common practice in developing countries like Ethiopia. Such practices, however, pose significant environmental and public health risks. The objective of this study was to evaluate the irrigation suitability of anaerobic digestion brewery effluent (ADBE) and two-stage horizontal subsurface constructed wetland post-treated ADBE (CWPBE). A series of pot experiments were conducted in a plastic - greenhouse system arranged in three sets of irrigation schemes: Treatment Group1 (TG1): municipal pipe tap water (MPTW) irrigated pots; Treatment Group2 (TG2): ADBE irrigated pots, and Treatment Group3 (TG3): CWPBE irrigated pots. Pots packed with the same amount of sandy clay loam soil and local tomato seeds sown were irrigated following an updated tomato irrigation schedule derived from the FAO CROPWAT stimulation model for 120 days. The findings from key irrigation water quality parameters showed that the CWPBE achieved the prescribed irrigation water standards with values of pH (7.4 ± 0.15), electrical conductivity (1.9 ± 0.11 dS.m-1), total suspended solids (25 ± 4.17 mgL-1), chemical oxygen demand (185.1 ± 1.66 mgL-1), total nitrogen (17.4 ± 0.7 mgL-1), total phosphorous (8.8 ± 0.26 mgkg-1), calcium (10.5 ± 3.6 mgkg-1), magnesium (4.9 ± 0.98 mgkg-1), sodium (4.4 ± 1.51 mgkg-1), potassium (2.3 ± 1.15 mgkg-1), sodium adsorption ratio (1.6 ± 0.34), and total coliform (8 ± 0.16×10-5 CFU/100 mL). Moreover, tomato plants grown in TG3 attained higher growth such as number of leaves (85.6 ± 4.68), plant height (92.2 ± 1.29 cm), stem diameter (13.1 ± 2.35 cm) and leaf area (35.5 ± 1.03 cm2) as well as higher biomass (61.2 ± 1.33 kgm-2) and fruit (46.4 ± 3.51 kgm-2) yields over other treatment groups. The results revealed that irrigation waters significantly improved both growth and yield parameters of tomato plants with the ascending order of TG1 < TG2 < TG3. Moreover, CWPBE showed minima short-term residual effect on soil physicochemical properties as compared to ADBE, and thus, it has potential suitability for agricultural irrigation reuse.

The war using microbes: A sustainable approach for wastewater management

Anthropogenic activities and population growth have resulted in a reduced availability of drinking water. To ensure consistency in the existence of drinking water, it is inevitable to establish wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). 70% of India's rural population was found to be without WWTP, waste disposal, and good sanitation. Wastewater has emerged from kitchens, washrooms, etc., with industry activities. This scenario caused severe damage to water resources, leading to degradation of water quality and pathogenic insects. Thus, it is a need of an hour to prompt for better WWTPs for both rural and urban areas. Many parts of the world have started to face severe water shortages in recent years, and wastewater reuse methods need to be updated. Clean water supply is not enough to satisfy the needs of the planet as a whole, and the majority of freshwater in the polar regions takes the form of ice and snow. The increasing population requires clean water for drinks, hygiene, irrigation, and various other applications. Lack of water and contamination of water result from human activities. 90% of wastewater is released to water systems without treatment in developing countries. Studies show that about 730 megatons of waste are annually discharged into water from sewages and other effluents. The sustenance of water resources, applying wastewater treatment technologies, and calling down the percentage of potable water has to be strictly guided by mankind. This review compares the treatment of domestic sewage to its working conditions, energy efficiency, etc. In this review, several treatment methods with different mechanisms involved in waste treatment, industrial effluents, recovery/recycling were discussed. The feasibility of bioaugmentation should eventually be tested through data from field implementation as an important technological challenge, and this analysis identifies many promising areas to be explored in the future.

Enhancing a Transition to a Circular Economy in the Water Sector: The EU Project WIDER UPTAKE

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) require an urgent transition from a linear to a circular economy operation/design concept with a consequent resource recovery and more sustainable waste management. Natural resources have to be preserved, and wastes have to become an opportunity for recovering resources and materials (water reuse, energy, sludge reuse). However, the transition toward a circular economy is a complex and long process due to the existence of technical, economic, social and regulatory barriers. These existing barriers are critical challenges for a modern and sustainable WWTP concept. The recovery of resources must be considered a strategic target from the earliest process-design phase. In this context, the European Union’s Horizon 2020 project “Achieving wider uptake of water-smart solutions—WIDER UPTAKE” aims to overcome the existing barriers (technological, regulatory, organizational, social and economic) toward the transition from a linear to a circular economy model for WWTPs. This study is aimed at increasing the awareness of the existing barriers to a circular economy and summarizes the key contributions of the WIDER UPTAKE project in terms of water reuse, sludge reuse and nutrient recovery.

Coupling Plant Biomass Derived from Phytoremediation of Potential Toxic-Metal-Polluted Soils to Bioenergy Production and High-Value by-Products—A Review

Phytoremediation is an attractive strategy for cleaning soils polluted with a wide spectrum of organic and inorganic toxic compounds. Among these pollutants, heavy metals have attracted global attention due to their negative effects on human health and terrestrial ecosystems. As a result of this, numerous studies have been carried out to elucidate the mechanisms involved in removal processes. These studies have employed many plant species that might be used for phytoremediation and the obtention of end bioproducts such as biofuels and biogas useful in combustion and heating. Phytotechnologies represent an attractive segment that is increasingly gaining attention worldwide due to their versatility, economic profitability, and environmental co-benefits such as erosion control and soil quality and functionality improvement. In this review, the process of valorizing biomass from phytoremediation is described; in addition, relevant experiments where polluted biomass is used as feedstock or bioenergy is produced via thermo- and biochemical conversion are analyzed. Besides, pretreatments of biomass to increase yields and treatments to control the transfer of metals to the environment are also mentioned. Finally, aspects related to the feasibility, benefits, risks, and gaps of converting toxic-metal-polluted biomass are discussed.

Treated wastewater reuse for irrigation: Pros and cons

The appropriateness of using treated wastewater for crop or agricultural irrigation remains a bone of contention among experts and policymakers. Here, we outline and analyze not only the benefits but also the drawbacks of such a practice in order to suggest a way forward. To ensure that our review reflects the state-of-the-art in terms of technological advances and best practices, only literature published in the last decade is considered except for literature on the history of reuse. The review begins by highlighting growing water scarcity, the history of wastewater reuse in agriculture, and the limitations of existing studies. A short overview of the approach used in the write-up is outlined after the introduction. It then proceeds with an in-depth look at three broad areas: environmental impacts, public health impacts, and economic impacts. In terms of environmental impacts, effects on soil quality, water resources, plant growth, and soil microbial communities are analyzed. For each sub-area, the positive effects are described before the negative ones. The same approach is then applied to public health impacts, the focus of which is on human exposure to heavy metals and pathogens, and economic impacts, which are assessed with particular reference to investment cost, financial benefit to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), farm expenditure and income. Having weighed the advantages and disadvantages in each area, innovative measures are proposed for optimizing the benefits and mitigating the drawbacks of using treated wastewater for crop irrigation. Special consideration was given to contaminants of emerging concern and the known or perceived environmental and health risks associated with these contaminants.

Assessing the Industrial Effluent Effect on Irrigation Water Quality and Farm Soil near Kombolcha Town, Ethiopia

This study evaluated various industrial effluents’ effect on irrigation water quality and farm soil near Kombolcha town. Several industries such as brewery, steel iron, textile, and tannery have been installed near the Borkena River that crosses Kombolcha town. Representative samples of irrigation water and farm soil were collected from the upper and down part of Borkena river. The upper site was used as a control as it was not contaminated by industrial effluents. The analysis for selected parameters showed that the downstream irrigation water quality had mean concentrations of pH = 8.54, magnesium (Mg+2) = 5.27 mg/l, carbonate (CO3−2) = 1.25 mg/l, bicarbonate (HCO3−) = 9.10 mg/l, copper (Cu) = 0.21 mg/l, chromium (Cr) = 0.31 mg/l, and cadmium (Cd) = 0.03 mg/l which were above the permissible limit of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO’s) irrigation water quality standard. The mean concentrations of electric conductivity (EC) = 0.96 ds/m, sodium (Na+) = 3.35 mg/l, chloride (Cl−) = 7.67 mg/l, and total dissolved solids (TDS) = 612.98 mg/l were slightly and moderately restricted for irrigation. Moreover, the concentration of heavy metals, calcium (Ca+2) = 16.61 mg/l, iron (Fe) = 4.25 mg/l, manganese (Mn) = 0.18 mg/l, and lead (Pb) = 0.47 mg/l, was below the permissible limit of the FAO and nonrestricted. However, the mean concentration of EC, HCO3−, Cu, Cr, Cd, and TDS for downstream-irrigated farm soil samples was above the permissible limit of the FAO. The concentration of most selected parameters in downstream farm soil was also decreasing along with depth except pH, CO3−2, and HCO3-. Generally, there is a significant quality difference (at P ≤ 0.05) between the upstream and downstream irrigation water quality on the parameters of Mg+2, Cl−, Pb, and Cu.

Enhanced photocatalytic activity at multidimensional interface of 1D-Bi2S3@2D-GO/3D-BiOI ternary nanocomposites for tetracycline degradation under visible-light

Structural dimensionality and surface morphology are key properties that greatly affect the functionalities of materials. Herein, we report a synthesis of dimensionally coupled ternary nanocomposites from three-dimensional (3D) bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI), two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO), and one-dimensional (1D) bismuth sulfide (Bi₂S₃) nanomaterials for tetracycline degradation under visible-light irradiation. The 2%-Bi₂S₃@1%-GO/BiOI ternary nanocomposites show higher degradation efficiency than neat 3D-BiOI. The coupling of neat 1D-Bi₂S₃ with the 1%-GO/BiOI binary nanocomposite does not increase the specific surface area of the resulting 2%-Bi₂S₃@1%-GO/3D-BiOI ternary nanocomposite, but enhances notably its charge carrier separation and migration, according to the analysis of the higher photocurrent, smaller arc radius of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and lower photoluminescence intensity. The observed results suggest that the combination of dimensionally coupled composites provides a synergistic effect through an efficient charge transfer process. This work offers new insights into the design and construction of dimensionally coupled ternary nanocomposites for environmental remediation applications.

Hydroxyapatite as a passivator for safe wheat production and its impacts on soil microbial communities in a Cd-contaminated alkaline soil

The remediation of Cd-contaminated alkaline soil plays a critical role in safe wheat production. In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAP), a functional environmental remediation material, was selected to investigate the effects of HAP on cadmium accumulation in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), Cd bioavailability in alkaline soil moderately polluted with Cd (2.46 mg kg^-1) and the soil bacterial community via pot experiments. The results showed HAP effectively inhibited Cd accumulation in the grains of two investigated wheat cultivars by hindering root uptake. The Cd concentrations decreased by 49.9-81.9%, and 35.7-92.4% in the grains of Zhoumai-30 and Zhengmai-7698, respectively. HAP increased the soil pH and reduced the bioavailability of Cd. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis indicated that the changes of soil physicochemical properties changed the diversity and composition of the bacterial community by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial soil bacteria. These results demonstrated the application of 2.5% HAP combined with planting Zhengmai-7698 treatment was a potential remediation method for safe wheat production, and also benefited soil P and N cycling by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria. The good performance of HAP in inhabiting Cd accumulation in wheat grains indicated it is a promising material for safe wheat production.

Insights into the effects of heavy metal pressure driven by long-term treated wastewater irrigation on bacterial communities and nitrogen-transforming genes along vertical soil profiles

Irrigation with treated wastewater (TWW) influences soil ecological function due to the accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) and nutrients in soils. However, the interaction between HMs and microbial processes in TWW-irrigated soil has not been fully explored. We investigated the effect of HMs on bacterial communities and nitrogen-transforming (N-transforming) genes along vertical soil profiles irrigated with domestic TWW (DTWW) and industrial TWW (ITWW) for more than 30 years. Results indicate that long-term TWW irrigation reshaped bacterial community structure and composition. Irrigation with ITWW led to increased accumulation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Ni in soils than DTWW. Accumulation of inorganic N, soil organic carbon, and HMs in topsoil irrigated with ITWW contributed to the activities of Micrococcaceae. The effect of the activation of nutrient factors on Bacillus, which was the dominant species in DTWW-irrigated soils, was greater than that of HMs. HM pressure driven by ITWW irrigation changed the vertical distribution of N-transforming functional genes, increasing the abundance of amoA gene and decreasing that of nifH through soil depth. ITWW irrigation enhanced the denitrification capacity in topsoil; ammonia-oxidizing capacity in deeper soil was increased after long-term irrigation with DTWW and ITWW, suggesting a potential risk of nitrogen loss.

Antibiotic resistance development and human health risks during wastewater reuse and biosolids application in agriculture

The reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) and sewage sludge are considered as solutions to the limited water resource and sludge disposal issues, respectively. The associated environmental and human health risks need to be analyzed to assess whether they are safe solutions or not. This paper discusses issues that relate to the accumulation of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance (AR) determinants in agricultural lands and crops, following TWW irrigation and biosolid amendment. Exposure assessment and dose-response assessment are the two important aspects of risk assessment discussed in this paper. Finally, research gaps in current knowledge that are relevant to a comprehensive and quantitative AR risk assessment were identified which includes: 1.) Studies on soil conditions that increase the frequency of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between native soil resistome and pathogenic microbes in biosolids and TWW 2.) Holistic studies that examine the accumulation or dissipation of antibiotics, antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from the irrigation/biosolids application stage to crop consumption stage 3.) The influences of soil environmental conditions (e.g. salinity, nutrients) on the fate of ARB and ARGs in soil and translocation in edible plants 4.) The development of dose-response models that explicitly incorporate the potential for ARGs transfer between microbes when quantifying the risks of infection due to ARB.

Free living amoebae isolation in irrigation waters and soils of an insular arid agroecosystem

The use of freshwater in agricultural systems represents a high percentage of total water consumption worldwide. Therefore, alternative sources of water for irrigation will need to be developed, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas, in order to meet the growing demand for food in the future. The use of recycled wastewater (RWW), brackish water (BW) or desalinated brackish water (DBW) are among the different non-conventional water resources proposed. However, it is necessary to evaluate the health risks for humans and animals associated with the microbiological load of these waters. Protozoa such as free-living amoebae (FLA) are considered an emerging group of opportunistic pathogens capable to cause several diseases in humans (e.g. cutaneous and ocular infections, lung, bone or adrenal gland conditions or fatal encephalitis). In the present study we evaluate FLA presence in three different irrigation water qualities (RWW, BW and DBW) and its survival in irrigated agricultural soils of an extremely arid insular ecosystem (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain). Samples were cultured on 2% Non-Nutrient Agar (NNA) plates covered with a thin layer of heat killed E. coli and checked daily for the presence of FLA. According to the prevalence of FLA, Vermamoeba vermiformis (53,8%), Acanthamoeba spp. (30,8%), Vahlkampfia avara (7,7%) and Naegleria australiensis (7,7%) were detected in the analysed water samples, while Acanthamoeba (83,3%), Cercozoa spp. (8,3%) and Vahlkampfia orchilla (8,3%) were isolated in irrigated soils. Only Acanthamoeba strains were isolated in no irrigated soils used as control, evidencing the capability of these protozoa to resist environmental harsh conditions. Additionally, all analysed water sources and the irrigated soils presented growth of several pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, the coexistence in water and soils of pathogenic bacteria and FLA, can mean an increased risk of infection in agroecosystems.

In-situ stabilization of Cd by sepiolite co-applied with organic amendments in contaminated soils

Field experiments was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of sepiolite (S), sepiolite + fungi residues (SFR) and sepiolite + vermicompost (SVC) on in situ immobilization remediation of Cd contaminated soils. The results showed that treatments of S, SFR and SVC decreased soil Cd availability by 15.2-47.8%, 17.5-44.9% and 13.2-44.9%, respectively, when compared with the control groups. Moreover, the content of Cd in edible parts of Lactuca sativa L., Cichorium endivia L. and Brassica campestris L. was experienced a decrease of 15.9-41.9%, 1.6-38.0% and 29.0-37.4% reduction, respectively, under the amended soil. The improvement of soil fertility was obtained under addition of SVC and SFR, while the amounts of available P, K, organic matter, microbial carbon, microbial nitrogen and dehydrogenase activity were increased by 9.6-68.2%, 1.2-28.3%, 37.5-70.5%, 4.1-121.0%, 220-640% and 6.8-56.8%, respectively, in contrast to CK. Moreover, high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the combined treated soils got higher values of alpha diversity indices, Chao1, ACE and Shannon. The number of dominant phyla (Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Crenarchaeota) and genera (Aquicella, Lysobacter, Candidatus Nitrososphaera, Sphingopyxis, Mesorhizobium) were enhanced. Therefore, the use of sepiolite and organic amendments could be an adequate strategy to immobilization remediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

The challenge of removing waste from wastewater: let technology use nature!

Tertiary treatments capable of removing chemical and biological contaminants of emerging concern have been successfully developed and implemented at full scale, opening the possibility of using wastewater treatment plants as recycling units, capable of producing wastewater that can be reused in various activities, such as agriculture irrigation; However, tertiary treatments remove only part of the wastewater microbiota, leaving the opportunity for regrowth and/or reactivation of potentially hazardous microorganisms, facilitated by the poor competition among the surviving microorganisms; Under the motto 'added by technology, lead by nature', the treatment and storage of treated wastewater must find the balance to develop a protection shield against the impoverishment the microbial quality and the development of potentially hazardous bacteria.

Unveiling the transformation of dissolved organic matter during ozonation of municipal secondary effluent based on FT-ICR-MS and spectral analysis

Ozonation is a well-recognized process in advanced treatment of municipal secondary effluent for water reclamation. However, the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) during ozonation of real effluents, particularly at molecular level, has been scarcely reported. In this study, we performed ozonation treatments on real secondary effluents from two municipal wastewater treatment plants, and used Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and various spectroscopic techniques to probe the transformation of dEfOM at four ozone dosage levels (0.28, 0.61, 0.89, and 1.21 mg O₃/mg DOC). Most of the precursors were unsaturated and reduced compounds (positive double bond equivalent minus oxygen per carbon ((DBE-O)/C) and negative nominal oxidation state of carbon (NOSC)), whereas the products were mainly the saturated and oxidized ones (negative (DBE-O)/C and positive NOSC). As the ozone dosage increased, the relative abundance of O_8-19 species gradually increased in the ozonated samples, whereas an opposite trend was observed for O_5-7S₁ species. Further, we employed 18 types of reactions to represent the ozonation process, and found that the oxygenation reaction (+3O) possessed the largest number of possible precursor-product pairs, and CHON compounds possessed the highest reactivity. Besides the dominant oxygenation reactions, decyclopropyl (-C₃H₄) was relatively common reaction for CHON compounds, while it was oxidative desulfonation (-SH₂) for CHOS ones. In addition, the transformation of precursors to products accompanied with the drop of (DBE-O)/C, and the increase of NOSC and the O/C ratio. The precursors with aromaticity and fluorescence were mainly correlated with the compounds featuring higher (DBE-O)/C and lower NOSC values. This study is believed to help better understand and improve the application of ozonation process in advanced treatment of real wastewater.

A Pilot Study Combining Ultrafiltration with Ozonation for the Treatment of Secondary Urban Wastewater: Organic Micropollutants, Microbial Load and Biological Effects

Ozonation followed by ultrafiltration (O3 + UF) was employed at pilot scale for the treatment of secondary urban wastewater, envisaging its safe reuse for crop irrigation. Chemical contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and priority substances (PSs), microbial load, estrogenic activity, cell viability and cellular metabolic activity were measured before and immediately after O3 + UF treatment. The microbial load was also evaluated after one-week storage of the treated water to assess potential bacteria regrowth. Among the organic micropollutants detected, only citalopram and isoproturon were not removed below the limit of quantification. The treatment was also effective in the reduction in the bacterial loads considering current legislation in water quality for irrigation (i.e., in terms of enterobacteria and nematode eggs). However, after seven days of storage, total heterotrophs regrew to levels close to the initial, with the concomitant increase in the genes 16S rRNA and intI1. The assessment of biological effects revealed similar water quality before and after treatment, meaning that O3 + UF did not produce detectable toxic by-products. Thus, the findings of this study indicate that the wastewater treated with this technology comply with the water quality standards for irrigation, even when stored up to one week, although improvements must be made to minimise microbial overgrowth.

Effects of prescription antibiotics on soil- and root-associated microbiomes and resistomes in an agricultural context

The use of treated wastewater for crop irrigation is rapidly increasing to respond to the ever-growing demands for water and food resources. However, this practice may contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in agricultural settings. To evaluate this potential risk, we analyzed microbiomes and resistomes of soil and Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) root samples from pots irrigated with tap water spiked with 0, 20, or 100 μg L^-1 of a mixture of three antibiotics (Trimethoprim, Ofloxacin, Sulfamethoxazole). The presence of antibiotics induced changes in bacterial populations, particularly in soil, as revealed by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Parallel shotgun sequencing identified a total of 56 different ARGs conferring resistance against 14 antibiotic families. Antibiotic -treated samples showed increased loads of ARGs implicated in mutidrug resistance or in both direct and indirect acquired resistance. These changes correlated with the prevalence of Xantomonadales species in the root microbiomes. We interpret these data as indicating different strategies of soil and root microbiomes to cope with the presence of antibiotics, and as a warning that their presence may increase the loads of ARBs and ARGs in edible plant parts, therefore constituting a potential risk for human consumers.

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in vegetables in Iran: a nineteen-years meta-analysis review

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are two major protozoa reported from vegetables and environment. The prevalence of these parasites supposes to be different regarding the climate zones. This review aimed to evaluate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in vegetables according to the major climate zones in Iran. The results showed pooled prevalence 7% (95% CI: 2%, 14%) and 4% (95% CI: 3%, 6%) for Cryptosporidium spp., and Giardia spp., respectively. The prevalence of Giardia spp. in mountain, desert and semi-desert, and Mediterranean regions was 4% (95% CI: 2%, 6%), 5% (95% CI: 3%, 8%) and 7% (95% CI: 1%, 18%), respectively. Cryptosporidium spp. was reported 8% (95% CI: 0%, 65%), 6% (95% CI: 0%, 18%) and 4% (95% CI: 0%, 77%) from mountain, desert and semi-desert, and Mediterranean climate zones, respectively. This review suggests the higher prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in Mediterranean and mountain regions, respectively.

Critical flocculation concentration for polyvalent ions using silica nanoparticles; a new version of Schulze-Hardy rule

Critical Flocculation Concentration (CFC) is an important quantity because allows to know the optimal amount of flocculant required to remove (adsorb) specific quantities of metal ions in aqueous solution allowing to reduce both, the flocculation time and the excess of unreacted flocculant; this unreacted material produces, by itself, an additional contamination. The results reported here show that the standard Schulze-Hardy-Rule (SHR), based only in the valence z, is not longer valid to obtain the right values of CFC. In this work it is reported a correct determination of CFC for di- and tri-valent ions using different types of silica nanoparticles. Both, the initial pH slope (-pHo) and the valence z are required to determine correctly the CFC. The proposed modified version for CFC is CFC ∝ [(-pHo)z]−1.

Wastewaters from citrus processing industry as natural biostimulants for soil microbial community

Citrus fruit processing wastewaters (CWWs), being rich in organic matter, may be a valuable resource for agricultural irrigation and, possibly, for the improvement of soil organic carbon (TOC). This issue is becoming crucial for soils of arid and semiarid environments increasingly experiencing water scarcity and continuous decline of TOC towards levels insufficient to sustain crop production. However, before using CWWs in agriculture their effects on the soil living component have to be clarified. Therefore, in this study we assessed the impact of CWWs on soil chemical and biochemical properties. Under laboratory conditions, lemon, orange and tangerine wastewaters were separately added to a sandy clay soil reaching 1/3, 2/3 and 3/3 of its 50% water holding capacity. Then soils were incubated for 56 days at 22-24 °C in the dark and analyzed for total and extractable organic C, microbial biomass C and N, and the main microbial groups at days 7, 28 and 56, while microbial respiration kinetics was fitted to a first-order decay model by nine distinct daily rates measurements throughout incubation. During the first 3 days following the addition of CWWs, soil pH decreased by 2-3 units; however, afterwards the soil recovered its initial pH values. Total and extractable C pools, as well as microbial biomass C and N, were stimulated by CWWS with such a stimulation depending on CWWs type and added dose. Also microbial respiration kinetics was greatly affected by CWWs, although the effects were generally ephemeral at the lowest two doses, whereas at the highest dose still persisted up to day 56, especially in orange and lemon wastewaters. The concomitant general increase of both microbial and metabolic quotients after the addition of CWWs suggested that also under stress conditions, soil microorganisms were able to immobilize C. Both bacteria and fungi were stimulated by CWWs but the latter, at the beginning of incubation, were more favored probably due to a transient soil acidification by CWWs. In conclusion, CWWs when added to a sandy-clay soil increased total and labile C pools, stimulated soil microbial activity and biomass, i.e. improved the overall biological soil fertility, thus suggesting a possible role of CWWs in sustainable agriculture. However, soil electrical conductivity has to be monitored when CWWs are applied recurrently.

Water Scarcity and Wastewater Reuse in Crop Irrigation

Due to climate change, two-thirds of mankind will face water scarcity by 2025, while by 2050, global food production must increase by at least 50% to feed 9 billion people. To overcome water scarcity, 15 million m3/day of untreated wastewater is used globally for crop irrigation, polluting the soil with pathogens, heavy metals and excess salts. Since 10% of the global population consumes food from crops irrigated with wastewater, pathogens transmitted through the food chain cause diseases especially in young children and women. In this paper, we discuss the status of water scarcity and the challenges to food security, the reuse of wastewater in agriculture and the possible risks to human and environmental health. The efficiency of different irrigation systems in limiting the risks of wastewater reuse and the latest regulations of the European Commission on effluent recovery are also presented. Hence, we emphasize that irrigation offers real perspectives for large-scale recovery of wastewater, helping to reduce the deficit and conserve water resources, and increasing food safety, with the express mention that investments must be made in wastewater treatment plants and wastewater must be properly treated before recovery, to limit the risks on human health and the environment.

Amyloid hybrid membranes for bacterial & genetic material removal from water and their anti-biofouling properties

Water scarcity and contamination by biological pollutants are global challenges that significantly affect public health. Reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and ultrafiltration technologies are very effective for the elimination of pathogens and most contaminants but associated with considerable capital and operating costs, high energy consumption and the use of chlorinated chemicals to suppress membrane fouling. Additionally, the pressure needed by these techniques may disrupt the pathogenic microbial cell membranes, causing the release of genetic material (fragments of DNA, RNA and plasmids) into the water. Here, we introduce the simultaneous removal of both bacteria and associated genetic material using amyloid hybrid membranes, via a combined adsorption and size exclusion mechanism. Amyloid hybrid membranes can remove upto and beyond 99% of the genetic material by adsorption, where amyloid fibrils act as the primary adsorbing material. When the same membranes are surface-modified using chitosan, the anti-biofouling performance of the membranes improved significantly, with a bacterial removal efficiency exceeding 6 log.

Antibiotic-contaminated wastewater irrigated vegetables pose resistance selection risks to the gut microbiome

Wastewater reuse in food crop irrigation has led to agroecosystem pollution concerns and human health risks. However, there is limited attention on the relationship of sub-lethal antibiotic levels in vegetables and resistance selection. Most risk assessment studies show non-significant toxicity, but overlook the link between antibiotics in crops and propagation of gut microbiome resistance selection. The review highlights the risk of antibiotics in treated water used for irrigation, uptake, and accumulation in edible vegetable parts. Moreover, it elucidates the risks to the adaptive resistance selection of the gut microbiome from sub-lethal antibiotic levels, as a result of dietary contaminated vegetables. Experiments have reported that bacterial resistance selection is possible at concentrations that are several hundred-folds lower than lethal effect levels on susceptible cells. Consequently, mutants selected at low antibiotic levels, such as those from vegetables, are fitter and more resistant compared to those selected at high concentrations. Necessary standardization, such as the development of minimum acceptable antibiotic limits allowable in food crop irrigation water, with a focus on minimum selection concentration, and not only toxicity, has been proposed. Wastewater irrigation offers environmental benefits and can contribute to food security, but it has non-addressed risks. Research gaps, future perspectives, and frameworks of mitigating the potential risks are discussed.

Spread of resistance genes from duck manure to fish intestine in simulated fish-duck pond and the promotion of cefotaxime and As

Integrated culture is a widespread culture mode in South China, in which resistance genes (RGs) also spread in the circulation system with nutrients. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to investigate the spread of RGs in a fish-duck pond and the RGs and bacterial community of fish intestines. Five fish tanks, including a control tank and four experimental tanks (duck manure, duck manure + cefotaxime, duck manure + As, and duck manure + cefotaxime + As), were tested for 100 days. The results showed that duck manure increased both the diversity and relative abundance of RGs in fish intestines, and the addition of stress factors (cefotaxime, As) increased the relative abundance of RGs by one to two orders of magnitude. The stress-inducing effect of cefotaxime was greater than that of As. Tetracycline resistance genes were more sensitive to stress factors and were the predominant RGs in fish intestines. RGs in duck manure preferentially spread from the water to biofilm and then to fish intestines, whereas co-stress of cefotaxime and As obviously promoted the spread of RGs to fish intestines. In comparison to the control tank, duck manure and stress factors significantly changed the bacterial community of fish intestines. Correlation analysis also revealed that arsB, MOX, tetA and sul1 were significantly correlated with intI1 (P < 0.01), which hinted a potentially dissemination risk of RGs in fish intestines. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further investigating the dissemination of RGs in integrated culture systems and for evaluating the ecological risk of antibiotic and As use in aquaculture.

Agricultural use suitability assessment and characterization of municipal liquid sludge: Based on South Africa survey

Sludge recycling as an agricultural resource has gained great attention worldwide. This is exacerbated by the ever-rising municipal wastewater production and the realization of its potential as a soil amendment resource. Sludge suitability assessment and characterization is crucial to prompt informed decisions regarding its use on agricultural lands. Liquid sludge samples were collected from eighteen wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) employing three different treatment processes in South Africa. Samples were analysed for physical and chemical parameters. Sludges' pH ranged from 4.5-9.5. Heavy metals concentrations were below the threshold level except for two waste activated sludge (WAS) which were downgraded to class B due to high Lead (Pb) content. Two anaerobically digested (AnD) sludges were downgraded to classes B and C because of high Pb and Cadmium (Cd) concentrations respectively. Electrical conductivity (EC) was above the 200 mS m^-1 threshold in AnD and in one of aerobically digested (AeD) sludges whilst WAS had ≤100 mS m^-1. Nitrogen (N): Phosphorus (P) ratios of the sludges were <8. Application of biosolids with low N:P ratio based on crop N requirements would lead to P pollution. Sustainable sludge application options were either to apply dry sludge based on crop N or P requirements and supplement the nutrient deficit with other fertilizer sources. The use of current liquid sludge as irrigation water to meet crop water needs and or applying dry sludge at 10 tons ha^-1 options showed that such options are unsustainable and would add excess nutrients above crop need which would result in agroecosystems pollution. The study findings suggest that, supposedly these liquid sludges are used for irrigation, they should be diluted with fresh water or deficit irrigation should be implemented to limit nutrient load.

Responses of Microbial Community to Di-(2-ethylhcxyl) Phthalate Contamination in Brown Soil

Di-(2-ethylhcxyl) phthalate (DEHP) is applied as plasticizer, which results in the pollution of environment. In this study, the effects of DEHP on soil microbial functions, structure and genetic diversity were investigated. The concentration of DEHP in the soil were 0, 0.1, 1, 10 and 50 mg/kg, and the experimental period were 28 days. DEHP reduced the quantity, abundance, species dominance and homogeneity of soil microbes during the first 14 days. In addition, microbial utilization efficiency of carbon (carbohydrates, aliphatics, amino acids, metabolites) was impacted after 28 days, though the effects gradually weakened. Based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and clone library analysis, in the presence of DEHP, the dominant microbes in the DEHP-contaminated soil were Sphingomonas and Bacillus, which belonged to the Acidobacteria and Proteobacteriav, respectively. With 0.1 or 1 mg/kg of DEHP, the relative abundances of Acidobacteria were higher, and with 10 or 50 mg/kg of DEHP, the relative abundances of Proteobacteria were higher.

Persistence of wastewater antibiotic resistant bacteria and their genes in human fecal material

Domestic wastewater is a recognized source of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARB&ARGs), whose risk of transmission to humans cannot be ignored. The fitness of wastewater ARB in the complex fecal microbiota of a healthy human was investigated in feces-based microcosm assays (FMAs). FMAs were inoculated with two wastewater isolates, Escherichia coli strain A2FCC14 (MLST ST131) and Enterococcus faecium strain H1EV10 (MLST ST78), harboring the ARGs blaTEM, blaCTX, blaOXA-A and vanA, respectively. The FMAs, incubated in the presence or absence of oxygen or in the presence or absence of the antibiotics cefotaxime or vancomycin, were monitored based on cultivation, ARGs quantification and bacterial community analysis. The fecal bacterial community was dominated by members of the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. The ARGs harbored by the wastewater isolates could be quantified after one week, in FMAs incubated under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. These observations were not significantly different in FMAs incubated anaerobically, supplemented with sub-inhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime or vancomycin. The observation that ARGs of wastewater ARB persisted in presence of the human fecal microbiota for at least one week supports the hypothesis of a potential transmission to humans, a topic that deserves further investigation.

Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Island of Crete, Greece

Crete, located in the South Mediterranean Sea, is characterized by long coastal areas, varied terrain relief and geology, and great spatial and inter-annual variations in precipitation. Under average meteorological conditions, the island is water-sufficient (969 mm precipitation; theoretical water potential 3284 hm3; and total water use 610 hm3). Agriculture is by far the greatest user of water (78% of total water use), followed by domestic use (21%). Despite the high average water availability, water scarcity events commonly occur, particularly in the eastern-south part of the island, driven by local climatic conditions and seasonal or geographical mismatches between water availability and demand. Other critical issues in water management include the over-exploitation of groundwater, accounting for 93% of the water used in agriculture; low water use efficiencies in the farms; limited use of non-conventional water sources (effluent reuse); lack of modern frameworks of control and monitoring; and inadequate cooperation among stakeholders. These deficiencies impact adversely water use efficiency, deteriorate quality of water resources, increase competition for water and water pricing, and impair agriculture and environment. Moreover, the water-limited areas may display low adaptation potential to climate variability and face increased risks for the human-managed and natural ecosystems. The development of appropriate water governance frameworks that promote the development of integrated water management plans and allow concurrently flexibility to account for local differentiations in social-economic favors is urgently needed to achieve efficient water management and to improve the adaptation to the changing climatic conditions. Specific corrective actions may include use of alternative water sources (e.g., treated effluent and brackish water), implementation of efficient water use practices, re-formation of pricing policy, efficient control and monitoring, and investment in research and innovation to support the above actions. It is necessary to strengthen the links across stakeholders (e.g., farmers, enterprises, corporations, institutes, universities, agencies, and public authorities), along with an effective and updated governance framework to address the critical issues in water management, facilitate knowledge transfer, and promote the efficient use of non-conventional water resources.

A review of the impact of wastewater on the fate of pesticides in soils: Effect of some soil and solution properties

Reuse of wastewater (WW) as an agricultural irrigation source is being considered with increasing interest, mainly in arid and semiarid zones. However, due to the complex nature of WW its reuse can have an impact on the fate of the pesticides added to the soils and crops for pest control. This review provides a detailed insight about the main processes involved in pesticide-soil-WW interactions (adsorption/desorption, degradation, transport, plant uptake and field assays) focusing on the role of dissolved organic matter and salt content in the mentioned processes. The influence of pesticide and soil properties in these processes is also discussed. The review explores current research gaps in the pesticide-soil-WW interactions and identifies areas that merit further research, providing a perspective for further scientific exploration.

Metabolically cohesive microbial consortia and ecosystem functioning

Recent theory and experiments have reported a reproducible tendency for the coexistence of microbial species under controlled environmental conditions. This observation has been explained in the context of competition for resources and metabolic complementarity given that, in microbial communities (MCs), many excreted by-products of metabolism may also be resources. MCs therefore play a key role in promoting their own stability and in shaping the niches of the constituent taxa. We suggest that an intermediate level of organization between the species and the community level may be pervasive, where tightly knit metabolic interactions create discrete consortia that are stably maintained. We call these units Metabolically Cohesive Consortia (MeCoCos) and we discuss the environmental context in which we expect their formation, and the ecological and evolutionary consequences of their existence. We argue that the ability to identify MeCoCos would open new avenues to link the species-, community- and ecosystem-level properties, with consequences for our understanding of microbial ecology and evolution, and an improved ability to predict ecosystem functioning in the wild. An African perspective on the prevalence, fate and effects of carbapenem resistance genes in hospital effluents and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) final effluents: A critical review

This article provides an overview of the antibiotic era and discovery of earliest antibiotics until the present day state of affairs, coupled with the emergence of carbapenem-resistant bacteria. The ways of response to challenges of antibiotic resistance (AR) such as the development of novel strategies in the search of new antibiotics, designing more effective preventive measures as well as the ecology of AR have been discussed. The applications of plant extract and chemical compounds like nanomaterials which are based on recent developments in the field of antimicrobials, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and chemotherapy were briefly discussed. The agencies responsible for environmental protection have a role to play in dealing with the climate crisis which poses an existential threat to the planet, and contributes to ecological support towards pathogenic microorganisms. The environment serves as a reservoir and also a vehicle for transmission of antimicrobial resistance genes hence, as dominant inhabitants we have to gain a competitive advantage in the battle against AMR.

Fish-processing effluent discharges influenced physicochemical properties and prokaryotic community structure in arid soils from Patagonia

Along the Patagonian coast, there are processing factories of marine products in land that produce fish-processing effluents. The aim of the present study was to assess the physicochemical properties and the prokaryotic community composition of soils receiving fish-processing effluent discharges (effluent site-ES), and to compare them with those of unaltered soils (control site-CS) in the arid Patagonian steppe. We analyzed soil prokaryotic communities (using amplicon-based sequencing of 16S rRNA genes), soil physicochemical properties and fish-processing effluent characteristics. Soil moisture, electrical conductivity (EC), total and inorganic C were significantly higher in ES than in CS (p < .05). Effluent discharges induced a decrease in the total number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and in the Shannon diversity index (p = .0009 and .01, respectively) of soil prokaryotic community. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria were the dominant phyla in CS, while ES soil showed a more heterogeneous composition of phyla. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) analysis showed that fish-processing effluent discharges promoted an enrichment of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, which are active contributors to organic matter mineralization, along with a decrease of oligotrophic phyla such as Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Armatimonadetes and Nitrospirae, commonly found in nutrient-poor arid soils. The concentrations of inorganic C and ammonium, the EC and the soil moisture explained 73% of the total variation within the community composition. Due to its salinity and nutrients, fish-processing effluents have potential mainly for native salt-tolerant plant irrigation, however the impacts of soil prokaryotic community shifts over plant growth remain to be determined.

Moving bed biofilm reactor as an alternative wastewater treatment process for nutrient removal and recovery in the circular economy model

Over the last years, an increasing concern has emerged regarding the eco-friendly management of wastewater. Apart from the role of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for wastewater and sewage sludge treatment, the increasing need of the recovery of the resources contained in wastewater, such as nutrients and water, should be highlighted. This would allow for transforming a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) into a sustainable technological system. The objective of this review is to propose a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) as a novel technology that contributes to the circularity of the wastewater treatment sector according to the principles of circular economy. In this regard, this paper aims to consider the MBBR process as the initial step for water reuse, and nutrient removal and recovery, within the circular economy model.

Hydrogeochemical and mixing processes controlling groundwater chemistry in a wastewater irrigated agricultural system of India

In many parts of the world, wastewater irrigation has become a common practice because of freshwater scarcity and to increase resource reuse efficiency. Wastewater irrigation has positive impacts on livelihoods and at the same time, it has adverse impacts related to environmental pollution. Hydrochemical processes and groundwater behaviour need to be analyzed for a thorough understanding of the geochemical evolution in the wastewater irrigated systems. The current study focuses on a micro-watershed in the peri-urban Hyderabad of India, where farmers practice intensive wastewater irrigation. To evaluate the major factors that control groundwater geochemical processes, we analyzed the chemical composition of the wastewater used for irrigation and groundwater samples on a monthly basis for one hydrological year. The groundwater samples were collected in three settings of the watershed: wastewater irrigated area, groundwater irrigated area and upstream peri-urban area. The collected groundwater and wastewater samples were analyzed for major anions, cations and nutrients. We systematically investigated the anthropogenic influences and hydrogeochemical processes such as cation exchange, precipitation and dissolution of minerals using saturated indices, and freshwater-wastewater mixtures at the aquifer interface. Saturation indices of halite, gypsum and fluorite are exhibiting mineral dissolution and calcite and dolomite display mineral precipitation. Overall, the results suggest that the groundwater geochemistry of the watershed is largely controlled by long-term wastewater irrigation, local rainfall patterns and water-rock interactions. The study results can provide the basis for local decision-makers to develop sustainable groundwater management strategies and to control the aquifer pollution influenced by wastewater irrigation.

Isolation and characterization of Burkholderia cenocepacia CR318, a phosphate solubilizing bacterium promoting corn growth

Plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria benefit crop health and growth through various mechanisms including phosphate and potassium solubilisation, and antimicrobial activity. Previously, we sequenced the genome of bacterial strain Burkholderia cenocepacia CR318, which was isolated from the roots of the starch corn (Zea mays L.) in London, Ontario, Canada. In this work, the species identity of this isolate is confirmed by recA phylogeny and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (isDDH), and its plant-growth promoting characteristics are described. B. cenocepacia CR318 exhibited strong activity of inorganic phosphate and potassium solubilization. It significantly promoted the growth of corn plants and roots by solubilizing inorganic tricalcium phosphate under greenhouse conditions. Functional analysis of the complete B. cenocepacia CR318 genome revealed genes associated with phosphate metabolism such as pstSCAB encoding a high affinity inorganic phosphate-specific transporter, and the pqqABCDE gene cluster involved in the biosynthesis of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), which is a required cofactor for quinoprotein glucose dehydrogenase (Gdh). However, it appears that B. cenocepacia CR318 lacks the quinoprotein Gdh which can produce gluconic acid to solubilize inorganic phosphate. Overall, these findings provide an important step in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the plant growth promotion trait of B. cenocepacia CR318.
