Abstract
This work examines the relationship between microstructural properties of hot-moulded chitosan networks, crosslinked with trisodium phosphate, and diffusive behaviour from these networks. Analysis through infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed successful crosslinking of the polymer chains and bioactive entrapment, while X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and dynamic oscillation in-shear elucidated the higher order structural properties of each matrix, as they transitioned from solutions to amorphous gels to semi-crystalline matrices. The picture of molecular motion observed in these systems and consequent application of the Flory-Rehner theory further indicated that different extents of chitosan crosslinking yielded a distinct water infusion functionality seen in the levels of swelling. Diffusion of caffeine from these delivery vehicles showed that network structural properties (governed by crosslinker concentration) had a significant effect on the release kinetics of the entrapped bioactive. The relationship between network mesh characteristics and diffusion properties were further confirmed by correlating caffeine release rates and molecular pore size.

Abstract
Recent advances in understanding the association of gut microbiota with the host have shown evidence of certain bacterial therapeutic potentiality in preventing and treating metabolic diseases. Hyperoxaluria is a severe challenge in nephrology and has led to the novel gut eubiosis as current therapy. The human gut commensal, obligate anaerobic, and intestinal oxalate-degrading strains of Oxalobacter formigenes have drawn a promising significant interest for the next-generation probiotics (NGPs). This nonpathogenic, potential probiotic, and specialist oxalotrophic properties of O. formigenes give a new hope as a live biotherapeutic agent for calcium oxalate renal therapy. Numerous satisfactory outcomes of in vitro and in vivo studies were achieved on evaluating O. formigenes functionality, but the commercial production of this bacterium is yet to be achieved. This bacterium finds diverse application in dietary and endogenous oxalate degradation and the improvement of gut health, on which we concentrated our attention in this review. The relationship between good anaerobic gut bacterial dysbiosis and renal complications is comprehensively discussed to address the need for the development probiotic formulation. However, the commercial production of this bacteria on a broad scale is complex, with numerous obstacles, mainly because they are oxygen-sensitive and difficult to culture. This review will coherently present the current and available methodologies in producing, stabilizing, and delivering these NGPs to treat calcium stones. Moreover, the study presents the extensive work and key milestones achieved in the research on O. formigenes from tale to the truth.

Abstract
The mainly aim of this study was to use mucilaginous solutions obtained from tamarind, mutamba, cassia tora, psyllium and konjac powdered to encapsulate reuterin-producing Limosilactobacillus reuteri in alginate beads by extrusion technique. In the particles were determined the bacterial encapsulation efficiency, cell viability during storage and survival under simulated gastric and intestinal conditions. Moreover, the reuterin production, its entrapment into the beads and the influence on viability of encapsulated microorganism were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy were employed to characterize the produced particles. The beads showed a relatively spherical shape with homogenous distribution of L. reuteri. The use of gums and mucilages combined with alginate improved the encapsulation efficiency (from 93.2 to 97.4%), the viability of encapsulated bacteria during refrigerated storage (especially in prolonged storage of 20, 30 and 60 days) and the survival after exposure to gastric and enteric environments (from 67.7 to 76.6%). The L. reuteri was able to produce reuterin via bioconversion of glycerol in the film-forming solutions, and the entrapment of the metabolite was improved using konjac, mutamba and tamarind mucilaginous solutions in the encapsulation process (45, 44.57 and 41.25%, respectively). Thus, our findings confirm the great potential of these hydrocolloids to different further purposes, enabling its application as support material for delivery of chemical or biological compounds.

Abstract
Effects of low methoxyl pectin, milk protein concentrate (MPC), and waxy starch on the encapsulation of green tea-polyphenols in alginate gels produced using spray aerosol technique were evaluated. MPC and waxy starch treated first by cold-renneted induced gelation method and gelatinization method, respectively. DSC thermal analysis and FTIR spectroscopy were used to prove the presence of polyphenols in gel matrixes. The encapsulation efficiency (%EE) and the polyphenols release were investigated using Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The results showed that the addition of biopolymers into alginate gels increased the encapsulation efficiency (%EE) but reduced the release percentage of polyphenol in water and simulated gastric fluid (SGF). Among the three biopolymers, cold-renneted MPC gave the best protection for polyphenols encapsulated in alginate microgels. It increased %EE from 63% to 68% in fresh gels, reduced the release percentage in water from 72% to 62% and reduced the release percentage in SGF from 76% to 67%.

Abstract
Chitin-glucan complex (CGC) hydrogels were fabricated through a freeze-thaw procedure for biopolymer dissolution in NaOH 5 mol/L, followed by a dialysis step to promote gelation. Compared to a previously reported methodology that included four freeze-thaw cycles, reducing the number of cycles to one had no significant impact on the hydrogels' formation, as well as reducing the total freezing time from 48 to 18 h. The optimized CGC hydrogels exhibited a high and nearly spontaneous swelling ratio (2528 ± 68%) and a water retention capacity of 55 ± 3%, after 2 h incubation in water, at 37 °C. Upon loading with caffeine as a model drug, an enhancement of the mechanical and rheological properties of the hydrogels was achieved. In particular, the compressive modulus was improved from 23.0 ± 0.89 to 120.0 ± 61.64 kPa and the storage modulus increased from 149.9 ± 9.8 to 315.0 ± 76.7 kPa. Although the release profile of caffeine was similar in PBS and NaCl 0.9% solutions, the release rate was influenced by the solutions' pH and ionic strength, being faster in the NaCl solution. These results highlight the potential of CGC based hydrogels as promising structures to be used as drug delivery devices in biomedical applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ellagic acid (EA), a potent dietary antioxidant, has limited bioavailability owing to its rapid absorption in the stomach and small intestine, and EA is transformed to more bioavailable compounds - urolithins - in the colon. An encapsulation system that sustains the release of EA in the gastrointestinal system and delivers more EA into the colon could improve the oral bioavailability of EA. Electrosprayed EA-loaded alginate-pectin beads were produced and coated with low- (LC) and high-molecular-weight chitosan (HC). The EA release from uncoated and coated beads under simulated gastrointestinal conditions was evaluated. The samples were characterized by particle size, gel strength, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. RESULTS The encapsulation efficiency (EE%) of EA ranged from 49.53% to 69.85% for uncoated beads, which was elevated up to 86.50% by coating, and LC coating provided higher EE%. Pectin addition to alginate and chitosan coating reduced the gel strength and changed the size depending on the molecular weight of chitosan. SEM images of pectin-added beads showed fewer cracks but more wrinkles, and chitosan coating presented more aggregated surfaces. The ionic interaction of alginate-pectin-chitosan and the entrapment of EA were confirmed by FTIR. In the gastric medium, EA release was very low from uncoated beads (15.2-19.8%), and totally restricted by chitosan coating. In the intestinal stage, EA release from LC-coated alginate-pectin beads was only 18%, and it was between 55% and 65% for uncoated or HC-coated counterparts. CONCLUSION The LC-coated alginate-pectin beads could be further explored as a potential system for colon-targeted delivery of EA. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The use of natural food ingredients has been increased in recent years due to the negative health implications of synthetic ingredients. Natural bioactive compounds are important for the development of health-oriented functional food products with better quality attributes. The natural bioactive compounds possess different types of bioactivities, e.g., antioxidative, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, and antiobesity activities. The most common method for the development of functional food is the fortification of these bioactive compounds during food product manufacturing. However, many of these natural bioactive compounds are heat-labile and less stable. Therefore, the industry and researchers proposed the microencapsulation of natural bioactive compounds, which may improve the stability of these compounds during processing and storage conditions. It may also help in controlling and sustaining the release of natural compounds in the food product matrices, thus, providing bioactivity for a longer duration. In this regard, several advanced techniques have been explored in recent years for microencapsulation of bioactive compounds, e.g., essential oils, healthy oils, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, flavoring compounds, enzymes, and vitamins. The efficiency of microencapsulation depends on various factors which are related to natural compounds, encapsulating materials, and encapsulation process. This review provides an in-depth discussion on recent advances in microencapsulation processes as well as their application in food systems.

Abstract
The phytochemical-rich extract obtained from black jamun pulp were encapsulated using vibrating dripping extrusion technique. The utilisation of alginate (AL) with four variations of core-shell material comprising gum Arabic (AL-GA), guar gum (AL-GG), pectin (AL-P) and xanthan gum (AL-X) was engaged to form calcium-alginate based lyophilised jamun extract encapsulated beads. It resulted that among four variations, lyophilised alginate with AL-GG based encapsulated jamun extract filled beads have better physicochemical characteristics and 95% encapsulation efficiency. The results revealed the morphological comparison of each variation. The release behaviour of AL-GG based beads has a higher release of total phenolics (TPC) and total anthocyanin content (TAC). The release kinetics model involving Ritger-Peppas and Higuchi model were applied for release TPC and TAC of all variations of beads. The Ritger-Peppas model was found best suitable in terms of average R2 (0.965) and lowest χ2 (0.0039). The release kinetics study showed that AL-GA based beads followed by AL-GG could also be the best suitable in release behaviour using simulated gastrointestinal fluids at 140-160 min. Overall, results shown the encapsulated Jamun beads have the best agro-industrial efficacy in form of phytochemical compounds based microparticles, holding decent antioxidant potential.

Abstract
Altering caffeine's negative physiological effects and extending its duration of activity is an active area of research; however, deuteration as a means of achieving these goals is unexplored. Deuteration substitutes one or more of the hydrogen atoms of a substance with deuterium, a stable isotope of hydrogen that contains an extra neutron. Deuteration can potentially alter the metabolic profile of a substance, while maintaining its pharmacodynamic properties. d9-Caffeine is a deuterated isotopologue of caffeine with the nine hydrogens contained in the 1, 3, and 7 methyl groups of caffeine substituted with deuterium. d9-Caffeine may prove to be an alternative to caffeine that may be consumed with less frequency, at lower doses, and with less exposure to downstream active metabolites of caffeine. Characterization of d9-caffeine's genotoxic potential, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacokinetic behavior is critical in establishing how it may differ from caffeine. d9-Caffeine was non-genotoxic with and without metabolic activation in both a bacterial reverse mutation assay and a human mammalian cell micronucleus assay at concentrations up to the ICH concentration limits. d9-Caffeine exhibited a prolonged systemic and brain exposure time in rats as compared to caffeine following oral administration. The adenosine receptor antagonist potency of d9-caffeine was similar to caffeine.

Abstract
In this study, emulsion gel beads for loading quercetin were prepared through an emulsification/gelation process using whey protein isolate (WPI) and pectin. Emulsion gel beads’ properties were investigated by different pectin content. Additionally, the physicochemical properties, morphology and quercetin release properties from beads were explored. Firstly, electrical characteristics and the rheology of bead-forming solutions were measured, revealing that all systems had strong negative charge and exhibited shear-thinning behavior. The textural results demonstrated that the properties of emulsion gel beads were improved with increasing the content of pectin. It was also confirmed that crosslinking was formed between WPI emulsion and pectin by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, the shape of the beads was spherical or ellipses with smooth surfaces and they had a tight gel network of internal structures, which was visualized by using electron microscopy (SEM). Finally, the amount of quercetin released in vitro was gradually decreased with increasing pectin content; it was as low as 0.59%. These results revealed that WPI emulsion–pectin gel beads might be an effective delivery system for quercetin as a colon target and are worth exploring further.

Abstract
The use of alginate microcapsules has often been mentioned as one of the ways to remove dyes from waste solvents, water and materials from the food industry. In addition, alginate can be used as a wall material for the microencapsulation of food dyes and their further application in the food industry. The aims of this study were to: (i) determine the effect of the alginate concentration (1, 2, 3 and 4%) on the ability of the adsorption and desorption of natural beetroot red dye and (ii) evaluate the kinetic parameters of the adsorption and desorption process, as well as the factors affecting and limiting those processes. According to the obtained results, the viscosity of alginate solutions increased with an increase in the alginate concentration. Based on k2 values (the pseudo-second order kinetic rate constant), when a more concentrated solution of alginate was used in the adsorption process, the beads adsorbed a smaller amount of dye. Furthermore, based on the values for n derived from the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, the dye release rates (k) were higher for beads made with lower alginate concentrations, and this release was governed by a pseudo-Fickian diffusion mechanism (n values ranged from 0.2709 to 0.3053).

Abstract
This study aimed to formulate sodium lauryl sulfate cross-linked chitosan beads and sodium alginate-chitosan films for designing a dressing that would shorten the healing time of skin wounds. Teucrium polium extract-loaded chitosan-sodium lauryl sulfate beads (CH-SLS) and chitosan-alginate (CH-ALG) films were prepared and characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling properties of the CH-SLS beads were also analyzed in a water solution. The obtained Teucrium polium extract-loaded CH-SLS beads and CH-ALG films (TBF) were further incorporated into the commercial adhesive dressing. This TBF wound dressing was then investigated for evaluation of its wound healing potential in the mice using the excision wound model. Healing was assessed by the macroscopic appearance and the rate of wound contraction during 8 days. On day 4, the TBF-treated wounds exhibited 98% reduction in the wound area when they were compared with healing ointment, elastic adhesive dressing, and untreated wounds which were exhibited 63%, 43%, and 32%, respectively. Furthermore, the application of TBF dressing reduced skin wound rank scores and increased the percentage of wounds contraction. These results demonstrate that TBF dressing improves considerably the healing rate and the macroscopic wound appearance at a short delay and this application may have therapeutic benefits in wound healing.

Abstract
Pectin grafted polyacrylic copolymer hydrogels were made by free radical crosslink copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) in an aqueous solution of pectin. N'N-methylene bis acrylamide (MBA) was used as a crosslinker. During the polymerization reaction the attapulgite (APG) filler was also incorporated in situ into the network of the copolymer gel. Several filled hydrogels were prepared by varying the amount of pectin and APG filler. These hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, 13C NMR, XRD, TGA, SEM, mechanical properties, DMA, swelling, diffusion characteristics and network parameters. The release kinetics of a model drug diltiazem hydrochloride (DT) was studied with these hydrogels. The wt% of pectin, APG and MBA was optimized with a central composite design (CCD) model of response surface methodology (RSM) with equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR), drug adsorption (mg/100 mg gel) and drug release% in 16 h as response. Accordingly, the hydrogel prepared with 5:1 AA:AM molar ratio, 25 wt% monomer concentration, 1% each of initiator and MBA concentration, 18 wt% pectin and 2 wt% APG showed an optimized ESR of 17.75, drug loading of 27.58 and a drug release % of 92.5 in 16 h at a solution pH of 7.4.

Abstract
Co-loaded (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and quercetin double emulsions and hydrogel beads were prepared, and their structure, functions, and digestion characteristics were investigated. The double emulsion particles were adsorbed by the cross-linked chains of the hydrogel beads. The encapsulation efficiencies of EGCG and quercetin within the hydrogel beads were higher than those within the double emulsion, while the antioxidant activities of the double emulsions were higher than those of the hydrogel beads. A lower amount of free fatty acids (FFAs) was released from the hydrogel beads than that released from the double emulsions. The bioavailability of EGCG was higher in the hydrogel beads than those in the double emulsions, while the quercetin bioavailability was not significantly different expect for the ratio of 3:7. The hydrogel beads remained intact in the stomach; however, numerous oil spills occurred in the small intestine. These data may improve double-emulsion-based delivery systems for controlled lipolysis and the release of co-encapsulated hydrophilic and lipophilic bioactive compounds.

Abstract
The aim of our work is to prepare mucoadhesive particles with biopolymers and 5-Aminosalicylic acid (5ASA) using the ionotropic gelation technique to ensure a controlled drug release at the colon level with potential applications in the treatment of intestinal bowel disease (IBD). The preparation of particles through the crosslinking of Chitosan (CS) with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) using different mass ratios and the influence of the k-Carrageenan (kCG) layer were studied. UV–VIS spectrometry was employed to assess encapsulation efficiency and drug release profile of 5ASA. The particles were investigated using FT-IR spectrometry for chemical characterization and the DLS results highlighted a monodisperse particle size distribution. The morphology of the polymeric beads was investigated using micro-computer tomography (µCT) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Particles based on Chitosan and k-Carrageenan were able to incorporate and preserve 5ASA in an acidic and alkaline medium. The 5ASA loaded polymeric particles obtained after immersion for 1 h in kCG solution exhibited the lowest release rate in pH = 1.2. Biocompatibility studies performed on all of the particles displayed a good viability for the CCD 841 CoN cells and low cytotoxicity. All of the results have shown that these new biomaterials could be a versatile platform of targeted carriers with potential applications in inflammatory bowel disease treatment.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TP) are a widely acknowledged bioactive natural product, however, low stability and bioavailability have restricted their application in many fields. To enhance the stability and bioavailability of TP under certain moderate conditions, encapsulation technique was applied. Kappa–Carrageenan (KCG) was initially degraded to a lower molecular weight KCG (LKCG) by H2O2, and was selected as wall material to coat TP. The obtained LKCG (Mn = 13,009.5) revealed narrow dispersed fragments (DPI = 1.14). FTIR and NMR results demonstrated that the main chemical structure of KCG remained unchanged after degradation. Subsequently, LK-CG and TP were mixed and homogenized to form LK-CG-TP microspheres. SEM images of the microspheres revealed a regular spherical shape and smooth surface with a mean diameter of 5–10 μM. TG and DSC analysis indicated that LK-CG-TP microspheres exhibited better thermal stability as compared to free TP. The release profile of LK-CG-TP in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) showed a slowly release capacity during the tested 180 min with the final release rate of 88.1% after digestion. Furthermore, in vitro DPPH radical scavenging experiments revealed that LK-CG-TP had an enhanced DPPH scavenging rate as compared to equal concentration of free TP. These results indicated that LK-CG-TP microspheres were feasible for protection and delivery of TP and might have extensive potential applications in other bioactive components.

MLE concentration had also a profound effect on color and antioxidant properties of the beads. As the concentration of MLE increased, the beads appeared lighter and their chroma increased. The radical scavenging activity was ameliorated by the MLE concentration increase for samples hardened for 8 and 20 min, whereas it was unaffected for those at 2 min. The hardening time on the contrary did not affect the inhibition of DPPH• values, regardless of the amount of extract added.

Abstract
Encapsulation is currently considered as one the most valuable methods for preserving aromatic compounds or hiding odors, enhancing their thermal and oxidative stability, and expanding their food applications. Indeed, this current article was aimed to provide an overview regarding the encapsulation of plant bioactive compounds and the spray-drying and extrusion processes with a focused discussion regarding the encountered challenges for meat and meat product preservation. Furthermore, different ranges of carbohydrates as wall materials (carriers) besides the process conditions' effects on the encapsulation effectiveness and the particle size of the encapsulated bioactive compounds have been discussed. The encapsulation of these compounds ameliorates the quality of the stored meat products by further delaying in microflora growth and lipid/protein oxidation. Therefore, the innovative technologies for plant active compounds encapsulation offer a prospective alternative for natural preservation development in the meat industry.

Abstract
This work reviews the recent development of biopolymer-based delivery systems for agricultural application. Encapsulation into biopolymer microparticles ensures the protection and targeted delivery of active agents while offering controlled release with higher efficiency and environmental safety for ecological and sustainable plant production. Encapsulation of biological agents provides protection and increases its survivability while providing an environment safe for growth. The application of microparticles loaded with chemical and biological agents presents an innovative way to stimulate plant metabolites synthesis. This enhances plants’ defense against pests and pathogens and results in the production of higher quality food (i.e., higher plant metabolites share). Ionic gelation was presented as a sustainable method in developing biopolymeric microparticles based on the next-generation biopolymers alginate and chitosan. Furthermore, this review highlights the advantages and disadvantages of advanced formulations against conventional ones. The significance of plant metabolites stimulation and their importance in functional food production is also pointed out. This review offers guidelines in developing biopolymeric microparticles loaded with chemical and biological agents and guidelines for the application in plant production, underlining its effect on the plant metabolites synthesis.

Abstract
Chitosan is one of the most abundant natural polymer worldwide, and due to its inherent characteristics, its use in industrial processes has been extensively explored. Because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, hydrophilic, cheap, and has good physical-chemical stability, it is seen as an excellent alternative for the replacement of synthetic materials in the search for more sustainable production methodologies. Thus being, a possible biotechnological application of Chitosan is as a direct support for enzyme immobilization. However, its applicability is quite specific, and to overcome this issue, alternative pretreatments are required, such as chemical and physical modifications to its structure, enabling its use in a wider array of applications. This review aims to present the topic in detail, by exploring and discussing methods of employment of Chitosan in enzymatic immobilization processes with various enzymes, presenting its advantages and disadvantages, as well as listing possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds for formulating an ideal support for this purpose. First, we will present Chitosan emphasizing its characteristics that allow its use as enzyme support. Furthermore, we will discuss possible physicochemical modifications that can be made to Chitosan, mentioning the improvements obtained in each process. These discussions will enable a comprehensive comparison between, and an informed choice of, the best technologies concerning enzyme immobilization and the application conditions of the biocatalyst.

Abstract
The Alginate-Neusilin US2 micro-composite (MC) beads were fabricated and optimized for oral delivery of hesperidin (HES). A 32 full factorial design encompassing independent variables (factors) such as the concentration of sodium alginate (X1), and Neusilin US2 (X2) and dependant variables (response) such as particle size (Y1), entrapment efficiency (Y2), and swelling degree (Y3). Nine batches were prepared by formulation design employing statistical software JMP 13.2.1. The multiple regression analysis (MLRA) was carried to explore the influence of factor over responses. Further, a prediction profiler was used to trace the optimum concentration of factors based on desirable responses. The optimized beads (OF) were characterized for their morphology and size by motic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In vitro release, kinetic studies were performed in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies revealed better absorption of HES from optimized beads (OF) compared to HES suspension which could be due to the prevention of acidic degradation of HES in the stomach. The estimated shelf life of OF formulation was found to be 3.86 years suggested better stability after fabrication. In a nutshell, the developed micro-composite beads of HES could be a better alternative for promising oral sustained delivery of HES.

Abstract
Vitamins, peptides, essential oils, and probiotics are examples of health beneficial constituents, which are nevertheless heat-sensitive and possess poor chemical stability. Various encapsulation methods have been applied to protect these constituents against thermal and chemical degradations. Encapsulates prepared by different methods and/or at different conditions exhibit different microstructures, which in turn differently influence the encapsulation efficiency as well as retention of encapsulated core materials. This review provides a summary of various microstructures resulted from the use of selected encapsulation methods or systems, namely, spray coating; co-extrusion; emulsion-, micelle-, and liposome-based; coacervation; and ionic gelation encapsulation, at different conditions. Subsequent effects of the different microstructures on encapsulation efficiency and retention of encapsulated core materials are mentioned and discussed. Encapsulates having compact microstructures resulted from the use of low-surface tension and low-viscosity encapsulants, high-stability encapsulation systems, lower loads of core materials to total solids of encapsulants and appropriate solidification conditions have proved to exhibit higher encapsulation efficiencies and better retention of encapsulated core materials. Encapsulates with hollow, dent, shrunken microstructures or thinner walls resulted from inappropriate solidification conditions and higher loads of core materials, on the other hand, possess lower encapsulation efficiencies and protection capabilities. Encapsulates having crack, blow-hole or porous microstructures resulted from the use of high-viscosity encapsulants and inappropriate solidification conditions exhibit the lowest encapsulation efficiencies and poorest protection capabilities. Compact microstructures and structures formed between ionic biopolymers could be used to regulate the release of encapsulated cores.

Abstract
In this study, caffeine (CA) was encapsulated into food-grade starch matrices, including swelled starch (SS), porous starch (PS), and V-type starch (VS). The bitterness of the microcapsules and suppression mechanisms were investigated using an electronic tongue, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and the in vitro release kinetics of CA. All the CA-loaded microcapsules showed a lower bitterness intensity than the control. The MD results proved that the weak interactions between starch and CA resulted in a moderate CA release rate for SS-CA microcapsules. The PS-CA microcapsule presented the longest CA release, up to 40 min, whereas the VS-CA microcapsule completely released CA in 9 min. The CA release rate was found to be related to the microcapsule structure and rehydration properties. A low CA bitterness intensity could be attributed to a delay in the CA release rate and resistance to erosion of the microcapsules. The results of this work are valuable for improving starch-based microcapsules (oral-targeted drug-delivery systems) by suppressing the bitterness of alkaloid compounds.

Abstract
Marine resources are today a renewable source of various compounds, such as polysaccharides, that are used in the pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic, and food fields. In recent years, considerable attention has been focused on carrageenan-based biomaterials due to their multifunctional qualities, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, in addition to bioactive attributes, such as their antiviral, antibacterial, antihyperlipidemic, anticoagulant, antioxidant, antitumor, and immunomodulating properties. They have been applied in pharmaceutical formulations as both their bioactive and physicochemical properties make them suitable biomaterials for drug delivery, and recently for the development of tissue engineering. This article provides a review of recent research on the various types of carrageenan-based biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
Traditional level of fertilisers was used by most farmers in China with the risks about resources wasting, environmental pollution together with soil structure deterioration. It is practicable to tackle the challenges about over-fertilisation and low efficiency with microencapsulated soil conditioner (MSC), which clads the water soluble core with natural polymer. Fulvic acid (FA) can be used as core material, because it possesses the characteristics of water-soluble, fertiliser maintenance and expedient monitoring. The morphology, structure, and properties of MSC were studied and compared. The particle size of MSC was ranged from 1.58 to 2.14 mm with a similar shape which was obtained by conventional measuring method due to their soft features. This was mainly attributed to the concentration of liquid paraffin and the interaction between shell materials and calcium chloride. FTIR spectra showed that a peak appeared at 1372 cm-1, and this was ascribed to the microcapsules crosslinked and solidified by calcium ions. Sustained release experiment revealed that the microcapsules owned better fertiliser-retaining and water-retaining performances, and FA may be released as long as 750 h. Biodegradation experiments revealed that an obvious pore structure was found on the surface of microspheres after 30 d of degradation, and this was consistent with the sustained release experiment. Pot experiment illustrated that the plants cured with the microcapsules showed significant growth trend and grew up to 9.2 cm with a maximum rate, and this revealed that MSC owned better performance of promoting the growth of crop root.

Abstract
Composite gel microparticles based on alginate and callus culture pectins with low and high degrees of methylesterification or apple pectin were produced. By varying the chemical composition of the pectic samples and the ratio of alginate to pectin, the gel strength, morphology, and swelling properties of composite microparticles can be altered. The inclusion of increasing concentrations of alginate in gel formulations promoted an increase in the microparticle gel strength and the formation of a smoother surface microrelief independently of the pectin chemical composition. Microparticles based on the pectin with a low degree of methylesterification (DM) and a higher concentration of alginate exhibited an increased swelling degree in the simulated digestive fluids. Microparticles based on the pectin with high DM and low alginate concentration were destroyed in the simulated intestinal fluid within 1 h due to the low Ca2+ content, gel strength, and grooved and rough surface of these microparticles. An increase in alginate concentration of gel formulations based on pectin with high DM led to increased stability of the microparticles in the simulated intestinal and colonic fluids due to increased Ca2+ content, microparticle gel strength and degree of crosslinking.

Abstract
Chitosan is a cationic natural polysaccharide, which has emerged as an increasingly interesting biomaterialover the past few years. It constitutes a novel perspective in drug delivery systems and nanocarriers' formulations due to its beneficial properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity. The potentiality of chemical or enzymatic modifications of the biopolymer, as well as its complementary use with other polymers, further attract the scientific community, offering improved and combined properties in the final materials. As a result, chitosan has been extensively used as a matrix for the encapsulation of several valuable compounds. In this review article, the advantageous character of chitosan as a matrix for nanosystemsis presented, focusing on the encapsulation of natural products. A five-year literature review is attempted covering the use of chitosan and modified chitosan as matrices and coatings for the encapsulation of natural extracts, essential oils or pure naturally occurring bioactive compounds are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The traditional treatment for diabetes usually requires frequent insulin injections to maintain normoglycemia, which is painful and difficult to achieve blood glucose control. RESULTS To solve these problems, a non-invasive and painless oral delivery nanoparticle system with bioadhesive ability was developed by amphipathic 2-nitroimidazole-L-cysteine-alginate (NI-CYS-ALG) conjugates. Moreover, in order to enhance blood glucose regulation, an intelligent glucose-responsive switch in this nanoparticle system was achieved by loading with insulin and glucose oxidase (GOx) which could supply a stimulus-sensitive turnover strategy. In vitro tests illustrated that the insulin release behavior was switched "ON" in response to hyperglycemic state by GOx catalysis and "OFF" by normal glucose levels. Moreover, in vivo tests on type I diabetic rats, this system displayed a significant hypoglycemic effect, avoiding hyperglycemia and maintaining a normal range for up to 14 h after oral administration. CONCLUSION The stimulus-sensitive turnover strategy with bioadhesive oral delivery mode indicates a potential for the development of synthetic GR-NPs for diabetes therapy, which may provide a rational design of proteins, low molecular drugs, as well as nucleic acids, for intelligent releasing via the oral route.
