Vicenin-2 ameliorates oxidative damage and photoaging via modulation of MAPKs and MMPs signaling in UVB radiation exposed human skin cells

Molecular mechanisms of selenium-biofortified soybean protein and polyphenol conjugates in protecting mouse skin damaged by UV-B

Selenium-biofortified crops are a quality functional food resource because of their anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties. In the present study, the conjugates of selenium-biofortified soybean protein and polyphenols were prepared and evaluated by alkali-induced synthesis and in vitro antioxidant tests. Moreover, the antioxidant mechanisms of protecting mice skin damaged by UV-B were studied. The results showed that the antioxidant activity of the conjugate between 7S globulin from selenium-enriched soybean (Se-7S) and EGCG (Se-7S-EGCG) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of Se-7S-GA. Structural characterizations implied that the polymerization of polyphenols with amino acid residues occurred. Se-7S-EGCG inhibited the apoptosis of epidermal cells induced by UV-B. The overexpression of phosphorylated proteins in the MAPK signaling pathway, the activation of related inflammatory factors, and the boost in the MMPs were reversed by Se-7S-EGCG. Overall, this research provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the application of protein and polyphenol conjugates in food and medicine fields.

Ligand modified cellulose fabrics as support of zinc oxide nanoparticles for UV protection and antimicrobial activities

This work is a critical preventive study for providing a healthy life and enhancing people's safety at work in which introduces of highly efficient and durable UV-protection and antibacterial textiles. With this aim, ZnO nanoparticles are in situ synthesized on the modified cotton fabric to produce the multifunctional fabrics. Herein, the cotton fabric is oxidized by periodate and then treated by 4-aminobenzoic acid ligand (PABA). The modified cotton fabrics are characterized via X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance, scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Moreover, the anti-bacterial, UV-protection, hydrophilicity, and mechanical properties of samples are investigated. The results show that pre-oxidization cotton fabric provides better active sites for the treatment with PABA. Then, PABA treatment provides significant sites for the growth of the ZnO nanoparticles and maintains cross-linking property between oxidized cellulosic fibers and the ZnO nanoparticles which improves the formation and durability of ZnO nanoparticles. The simultaneous sample treatment with ZnO and PABA had synergistic effects on UV protection, stability, and mechanical properties. Moreover, the ZnO PABA oxidized cotton fabrics show excellent UV-protection and significant antibacterial efficacy after 20 washing cycles and 100 abrasion cycles, which can be used in advanced protective textiles.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Vicenin-2 on dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in mice

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of Vicenin-2 on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. Colitis was induced in C57BL/6J mice by administration of 2% DSS in drinking water for 7 days. In addition to DSS, Vicenin-2 (50 mg kg^-1 /day^-1 ) was administrated orally to the test group. The ulceration extent and severity were assessed macroscopically, histopathologically, and by disease activity index. The Vicenin-2 treated group showed significant differences in physiological parameters including bodyweight, colon weight, and colon length, compared to DSS-induced colitis group. In addition, Vicenin-2 treatment effectively reduced stool consistency and bleeding scores. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and specific key inflammatory markers (iNOS and COX-2) significantly increased in DSS-induced colitis colon tissues. However, administration of Vicenin-2 effectively reduced the MPO activity, attenuated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and key inflammatory markers, in DSS-induced colitis mice. These results were comparable with sulfasalazine, an anti-inflammatory drug used routinely for ulcerative colitis (UC). These findings suggest that Vicenin-2 effectively suppresses DSS-induced colitis by attenuating expressions of key inflammatory mediators and found to be an attractive therapeutic drug for treating UC.
