Abstract
The photoluminescence stability of lanthanide complex in aqueous media is a prerequisite for diagnostics probes. The combination of building blocks working in concert to facilitate host-guest structures is now considered state of the art in surpassing this roadblock, yet there still remains a tremendous challenge. Here, a stable, highly-luminescent system was developed through trapping anionic complexes sensitized by tridentate pyridine-tetrazolate (pytz) ligands within the rigid framework of ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) particles (∼60 nm in size). The key to maintaining the stable luminescence of lanthanide complexes inside ZIF-8 frameworks is a stopcock design, i.e. stopper molecules (an imidazolium based ionic liquid) selectively plugged on the pore entrances located at the exterior surface of the ZIF-8 host, which protect both the host and the guests from deteriorations by surrounding ions/water molecules. Remarkably, the obtained Ln complex encapsulated ZIF-8 particles (Ln = terbium, europium) particles possessed high quantum yields (23.2% and 8.5%), large absorption cross-section (∼10-12 cm2), and long luminescence lifetimes (1.9 and 3.0 ms) in PBS buffer. In addition, the system can realize single/multi-color encoding by altering the loading amounts and the weight ratios of complexes emitting at different wavelengths.

Abstract
In the present study, dual-layer mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by incorporating ZSM-5 zeolite into poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA) as an active layer on the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane as a support layer for pervaporation separation of ethyl acetate (EAc) from EAc/water mixtures. The ZSM-5 zeolite nanoparticles were synthesized by the hydrothermal technique and characterized using XRD, XRF and FESEM analysis. The ATR-FTIR, SEM, DSC and contact angle tests were used to characterize the fabricated MMMs. The effect of ZSM-5 concentration on the performance of the membranes was investigated by the pervaporation experiments and the results showed that loading 10% wt% ZSM-5 into the PEBA matrix had the best separation performance. The effect of feed concentration (1–5 wt%) and operating temperature (30–50 °C) on the separation factor and permeation flux of the neat PEBA/PES and PEBA/PES membranes containing 10 wt% ZSM-5 were studied at laminar and turbulent feed flow regimes. Analysis of variance was used to investigate the interaction effect of EAc concentration and temperature on the performance of the prepared membranes. It was observed that both feed concentration and temperature had positive effects on the total permeation flux and separation factor. The ZSM-5/PEBA/PES membrane containing 10 wt% ZSM-5 showed a separation factor and total flux of 124.94 and 1882 g m−2 h−1 at laminar flow and 134.22 and 1985 g m−2 h−1 at turbulent flow, respectively for a feed concentration of 5 wt% and temperature of 50 °C. Dual-layer mixed matrix membranes were prepared by incorporating ZSM-5 zeolite into PEBA as an active layer on the PES membrane as a support layer for pervaporation separation of EAc from the EAc/water mixtures.![]()

Abstract
Having a secure and stable energy supply is a top priority for the global community. Fuel-cell technology is recognized as a promising electrical energy generation system for the twenty-first century. Polyvinyl alcohol/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (PVA/ZIF-8) composite membranes were successfully prepared in this work from direct ZIF-8 suspension solution (0⁻45.4 wt %) and PVA mixing to prevent filler aggregation for direct methanol alkaline fuel cells (DMAFCs). The ZIF-8 fillers were chosen for the appropriate cavity size as a screening aid to allow water and suppress methanol transport. Increased ionic conductivities and suppressed methanol permeabilities were achieved for the PVA/40.5% ZIF-8 composites, compared to other samples. A high power density of 173.2 mW cm-2 was achieved using a KOH-doped PVA/40.5% ZIF-8 membrane in a DMAFC at 60 °C with 1⁻2 mg cm-2 catalyst loads. As the filler content was raised beyond 45.4 wt %, adverse effects resulted and the DMAFC performance (144.9 mW cm-2) was not improved further. Therefore, the optimal ZIF-8 content was approximately 40.5 wt % in the polymeric matrix. The specific power output was higher (58 mW mg-1) than most membranes reported in the literature (3⁻18 mW mg-1).

Abstract
Nickel oxide (NiO) and phosphotungstic acid (PTA) supported on a ZIF-8 (NiO-PTA/ZIF-8) catalyst was first synthesized and it showed high activity and good selectivity for the hydrocracking of Jatropha oil. The catalyst was characterized by SEM, SEM-EDS, TEM, N2 adsorption, FT-IR, XRD and XPS. Compared with the NiO-PTA/Al2O3 catalyst, the selectivity of C15-C18 hydrocarbon increased over 36%, and catalytic efficiency increased 10 times over the NiO-PTA/ZIF-8 catalyst. The prepared NiO-PTA/ZIF-8 catalyst was stable for a reaction time of 104 h and the kinetic behavior was also analyzed. This catalyst was found to bypass the presulfurization process, showing promise as an alternative to sulfided catalysts for green diesel production.

Abstract
Fermentations provide an alternative to fossil fuels for accessing a number of biofuel and chemical products from a variety of renewable and waste substrates. The recovery of these dilute fermentation products from the broth, however, can be incredibly energy intensive as a distillation process is generally involved and creates a barrier to commercialization. Membrane processes can provide a low energy aid/alternative for recovering these dilute fermentation products and reduce production costs. For these types of separations many current polymeric and inorganic membranes suffer from poor selectivity and high cost respectively. This paper reviews work in the production of novel mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) for fermentative separations and those applicable to these separations. These membranes combine a trade-off of low-cost and processability of polymer membranes with the high selectivity of inorganic membranes. Work within the fields of nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and pervaporation has been discussed. The review shows that MMMs are currently providing some of the most high-performing membranes for these separations, with three areas for improvement identified: Further characterization and optimization of inorganic phase(s), Greater understanding of the compatibility between the polymer and inorganic phase(s), Improved methods for homogeneously dispersing the inorganic phase.
