Constructing B─N─P Bonds in Ultrathin Holey g-C3N4 for Regulating the Local Chemical Environment in Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to CO

The lack of intrinsic active sites for photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and fast recombination rate of charge carriers are the main obstacles to achieving high photocatalytic activity. In this work, a novel phosphorus and boron binary-doped graphitic carbon nitride, highly porous material that exhibits powerful photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity, specifically toward selective CO generation, is disclosed. The coexistence of Lewis-acidic and Lewis-basic sites plays a key role in tuning the electronic structure, promoting charge distribution, extending light-harvesting ability, and promoting dissociation of excitons into active carriers. Porosity and dual dopants create local chemical environments that activate the pyridinic nitrogen atom between the phosphorus and boron atoms on the exposed surface, enabling it to function as an active site for CO2RR. The P-N-B triad is found to lower the activation barrier for reduction of CO2 by stabilizing the COOH reaction intermediate and altering the rate-determining step. As a result, CO yield increased to 22.45 µmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation, which is ≈12 times larger than that of pristine graphitic carbon nitride. This study provides insights into the mechanism of charge carrier dynamics and active site determination, contributing to the understanding of the photocatalytic CO2RR mechanism.

Elevated temperature-driven coordinative reconstruction of an unsaturated single-Ni-atom structure with low valency on a polymer-derived matrix for the electrolytic oxygen evolution reaction

A high-temperature pyrolysis-controlled coordination reconstruction resulted in a single-Ni-atom structure with a Ni-Nx-C structural unit (x = N atom coordinated to Ni). Pyrolysis of Ni-phen@ZIF-8-RF at 700 °C resulted in NiNP-NC-700 with predominantly Ni nanoparticles. Upon elevating the pyrolysis temperature from 700 to 900 °C, a coordination reconstruction offers Ni-Nx atomic sites in NiSA-NC-900. A combined investigation with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and soft X-ray L3-edge spectroscopy suggests the stabilization of low-valent Niδ+ (0 < δ < 2) in the Ni-N-C structural units. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key process during water splitting in fuel cells. However, OER is a thermodynamically uphill reaction with multi-step proton-coupled electron transfer and sluggish kinetics, due to which there is a need for a catalyst that can lower the OER overpotentials. The adsorption energy of a multi-step reaction on a single metal atom with coordination unsaturation tunes the adsorption of each oxygenated intermediate. The promising OER activity of the NiSA-NC-900/NF anode on nickel foam was followed by the overall water splitting (OWS) using using NiSA-NC-900/NF as anode and Pt coil as the cathodic counterpart, wherein a cell potential of 1.75 V at 10 mA cm-2 was achieved. The cell potential recorded with Pt(-)/(+)NiSA-NC-900/NF was much lower than that obtained for other cells, i.e., Pt(-)/NF and NF(-)/(+)NF, which enhances the potentials of low-valent NiSAs for insightful understanding of the OER. At a constant applied potential of 1.61 V (vs. RHE) for 12 h, an small increase in current for initial 0.6 h followed by a constant current depicts the fair stability of catalyst for 12 h. Our results offer an insightful angle into the OER with a coordinatively reconstructed single-Ni-atom structure at lower valency (<+2).

Intranasal delivery of thin-film freeze-dried monoclonal antibodies using a powder nasal spray system

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) administered intranasally as dry powders can be potentially applied for the treatment or pre-exposure prevention of viral infections in the upper respiratory tract. However, a method to transform the mAbs from liquid to dry powders suitable for intranasal administration and a device that can spray the dry powders to the desired region of the nasal cavity are needed to fully realize the potentials of the mAbs. Herein, we report that thin-film freeze-dried mAb powders can be sprayed into the posterior nasal cavity using Aptar Pharma's Unidose (UDS) Powder Nasal Spray System. AUG-3387, a human-derived mAb that neutralizes the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was used in the present study. First, we prepared thin-film freeze-dried AUG-3387 powders (i.e., TFF AUG-3387 powders) from liquid formulations containing different levels of mAbs. The TFF AUG-3387 powder with the highest solid content (i.e., TFF AUG-3387C) was then chosen for further characterization, including the evaluation of the plume geometry, spray pattern, and particle size distribution after the powder was sprayed using the UDS Powder Nasal Spray. Finally, the deposition patterns of the TFF AUG-3387C powder sprayed using the UDS Powder delivery system were studied using 3D-printed nasal replica casts based on the CT scans of an adult and a child. It is concluded that it is feasible to intranasally deliver mAbs as dry powders by transforming the mAbs into dry powders using thin-film freeze-drying and then spraying the powder using a powder nasal spray system.

Analysis of multiple biomarkers revealed the size matters of Cu particles for barley response under foliar exposure

The impact of particle size of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on plant response has marginally been investigated under the foliar application so far. Concerning the significance of particle diameter for their properties and interaction with plants, the effect of size should be considered in the analysis of the effect of micronutrient-based ENPs on plants. It is of particular importance for ENPs containing Cu due to plants needing a relatively low amount of this element, thus there is a risk of overdosing during application as a fertilizer or pesticide. Here, we examined the biochemical and transcriptional response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to Cu nanoparticles (nano-Cu) with different diameters (25 nm, 50 nm, 70 nm), microparticles (micro-Cu), and chelated Cu (EDTA-Cu). The plants suffering from Cu deficiency were foliar sprayed with Cu compounds at 1000 mg/L during the tillering stage. 1- and 7-day plants were analyzed in terms of biomass, Cu content, the activity of enzymes involved with antioxidant response, the content of low molecular weight compounds, and the expression of genes regulated metal homeostasis, aquaporins, and defense. The results showed that the Cu leaf level was differentiated over time and after 7 days it was higher under exposure to the smallest nano-Cu than other particulate Cu. Regardless of the duration of exposure, the Cu content was highest in plants treated with Cu-EDTA. The cluster analysis of all markers revealed a clear distinct response to the smallest nano-Cu and other particulate and ionic treatments. The bigger nano-Cu, depending on the markers, caused the medium effects between the nano-Cu 25 nm and micro-Cu and Cu-EDTA. The found size thresholds at the nanoscale will be useful for the fabrication of safe-by-design agrochemicals to provide crop security and attenuate environmental impact.

DFT and experimental studies of the facet-dependent oxygen vacancies modulated WS2/BiOCl-OV S-scheme structure for enhanced photocatalytic removal of ciprofloxacin from wastewater

The present study explores visible light-assisted photodegradation of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) antibiotic as a promising solution to water pollution. The focus is on transforming the optical and electronic properties of BiOCl through the generation of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and the exposure of (110) facets, forming a robust S-scheme heterojunction with WS2. The resultant OVs mediated composite with an optimal ratio of WS2 and BiOCl-OV (4-WS2/BiOCl-OV) demonstrated remarkable efficiency (94.3%) in the visible light-assisted photodegradation of CIP antibiotic within 1.5 h. The CIP degradation using 4-WS2/BiOCl-OV followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with the rate constant of 0.023 min-1, outperforming bare WS2, BiOCl, and BiOCl-OV by 8, 6, and 4 times, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis aligned well with experimental results, providing insights into the structural arrangement and bandgap analysis of the photocatalysts. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis utilized for identifying potentially degraded products while scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping analysis elucidated the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This research contributes to advancing the design of oxygen vacancy-mediated S-scheme systems in the realm of photocatalysis, with potential implications for addressing water pollution concerns.

Wastewater Treatment Using Membrane Bioreactor Technologies: Removal of Phenolic Contaminants from Oil and Coal Refineries and Pharmaceutical Industries

Huge amounts of noxious chemicals from coal and petrochemical refineries and pharmaceutical industries are released into water bodies. These chemicals are highly toxic and cause adverse effects on both aquatic and terrestrial life. The removal of hazardous contaminants from industrial effluents is expensive and environmentally driven. The majority of the technologies applied nowadays for the removal of phenols and other contaminants are based on physio-chemical processes such as solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and adsorption. The removal efficiency of toxic chemicals, especially phenols, is low with these technologies when the concentrations are very low. Furthermore, the major drawbacks of these technologies are the high operation costs and inadequate selectivity. To overcome these limitations, researchers are applying biological and membrane technologies together, which are gaining more attention because of their ease of use, high selectivity, and effectiveness. In the present review, the microbial degradation of phenolics in combination with intensified membrane bioreactors (MBRs) has been discussed. Important factors, including the origin and mode of phenols' biodegradation as well as the characteristics of the membrane bioreactors for the optimal removal of phenolic contaminants from industrial effluents are considered. The modifications of MBRs for the removal of phenols from various wastewater sources have also been addressed in this review article. The economic analysis on the cost and benefits of MBR technology compared with conventional wastewater treatments is discussed extensively.

Biocompatible and antibacterial poly(lactic acid)/cellulose nanofiber‑silver nanoparticle biocomposites prepared via Pickering emulsion method

Developing biocompatible and antibacterial materials with biodegradable polymers is an ideal strategy to improve public health problems and plastic pollution simultaneously. In the present study, novel biocompatible and antibacterial poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA, coded as P)/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF, coded as T)‑silver nanoparticle (AgNP, coded as A) films were first developed. The core/shell PT Pickering emulsion was prepared by sonication treatment. The TOCNF shells with -COO-Na+ groups (∼1.5 mmol/g cellulose) were used as the support to in situ synthesize and immobilize AgNPs on the PT emulsion droplets. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mmol/g cellulose) was added to the PT emulsions. Then, ion-exchange reaction and hydrothermal reduction were conducted to form PTA (PTA1-PTA4) emulsions. After centrifugation to remove the excess Ag+, filtration, oven-drying, and hot-pressing, the PTA composite films were successfully prepared. The PTA3 film contained AgNPs 12.4 ± 2.8 nm in diameter and exhibited the highest antibacterial activities against the E. coli (85.2%) and S. aureus (80.1%) at 37 °C, where the initial bacterial suspension concentrations were approximately 2 × 108 CFU mL-1. Therefore, the biocompatible and antibacterial PTA3 film is a promising candidate for biomedical applications, in particular as an antibacterial bioactive packaging material.

Controlled Encapsulation of Gold Nanoparticles into Zr-Metal-Organic Frameworks with Improved Detection Limitation of Volatile Organic Compounds via Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have harmful effects on human health and the environment but detecting low levels of VOCs is challenging due to a lack of reliable biomarkers. However, incorporating gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) shows promise for VOC detection. In this study, we developed nanoscale Au@UiO-66 that exhibited surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity even at very low levels of toluene vapors (down to 1.0 ppm) due to the thickness of the shell and strong π-π interactions between benzenyl-type linkers and toluene. The UiO-66 shell also increased the thermal stability of the Au NPs, preventing aggregation up to 550 °C. This development may be useful for sensitive detection of VOCs for environmental protection purposes.

Efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water emerging contaminants through nanoarchitectonics of pore sizes and optical properties of zirconium-based MOFs

Over the past decades, the presence of pharmaceutical emerging contaminants in water bodies is receiving increasing attention due to the high concentration detected from wastewater effluent. Water systems contain a wide range of components coexisting together, which increases the difficulty of removing pollutants from the water. In order to achieve selective photodegradation and to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst on emerging contaminants, a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF), termed VNU-1 (VNU represents Vietnam National University) constructed with ditopic linker 1,4-bis(2-[4-carboxyphenyl]ethynyl)benzene (H₂CPEB), with enlarged pore size and ameliorated optical properties, was synthesized and applied in this study. When compared to UiO-66 MOFs, which only had 30% photodegradation of sulfamethoxazole, VNU-1 had 7.5 times higher adsorption and reached 100% photodegradation in 10 min. The tailored pore size of VNU-1 resulted in size-selective properties between small-molecule antibiotics and big-molecule humic acid, and VNU-1 maintained high photodegradation performance after 5 cycles. Based on the toxicity test and the scavenger test, the products after photodegradation had no toxic effect on V. fischeri bacteria, and the superoxide radical (·O₂^-) and holes (h⁺) generated from VNU-1 dominated the photodegradation reaction. These results demonstrate that VNU-1 is a promising photocatalyst and provide a new insight for developing MOF photocatalyst to remove emerging contaminants in the wastewater systems.

Feasibility of intranasal delivery of thin-film freeze-dried, mucoadhesive vaccine powders

Intranasal vaccination by directly applying a vaccine dry powder is appealing. However, a method that can be used to transform a vaccine from a liquid to a dry powder and a device that can be used to administer the powder to the desired region(s) of the nasal cavity are critical for successful intranasal vaccination. In the present study, using a model vaccine that contains liposomal monophosphoryl lipid A and QS-21 adjuvant (AdjLMQ) and ovalbumin (OVA) as a model antigen, it was shown that thin-film freeze-drying can be applied to convert the liquid vaccine containing sucrose at a sucrose to lipid ratio of 15:1 (w/w) into dry powders, in the presence or absence of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC) as a mucoadhesive agent. Ultimately, the thin-film freeze-dried AdjLMQ/OVA vaccine powder containing 1.9% (w/w) of CMC (i.e., TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% powder) was selected for additional evaluation because the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% powder was mucoadhesive and maintained the integrity of the antigen and the physical properties of the vaccine. Compared to the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA powder that did not contain CMC, the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% powder had a lower moisture content and a higher glass transition temperature. In addition, the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% thin films were relatively thicker than the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA thin films without CMC. When sprayed with Aptar Pharma's Unidose Powder Nasal Spray System (UDSP), the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA powder and the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% powder generated similar particle size distribution curves, spray patterns, and plume geometries. Importantly, after the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% powder was sprayed with the UDSP nasal device, the integrity of the OVA antigen and the AdjLMQ liposomes did not change. Finally, a Taguchi L4 orthogonal array was applied to identify the optimal parameters for using the UDSP device to deliver the TFF AdjLMQ/OVA/CMC_1.9% vaccine powder to the middle and lower turbinate and the nasopharynx regions in both adult and child nasal replica casts. Results from this study showed that it is feasible to apply the TFF technology to transform a nasal vaccine candidate from liquid to a dry powder and then use the UDSP nasal device to deliver the TFF vaccine powder to the desired regions in the nasal cavity for intranasal vaccination.

O and S co-doping induced N-vacancy in graphitic carbon nitride towards photocatalytic peroxymonosulfate activation for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Doping-induced vacancy engineering of graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) is beneficial for bandgap modulation, efficient electronic excitation, and facilitated charge carrier migration. In this study, synthesis of oxygen and sulphur co-doped induced N vacancies (OSGCN) by the hydrothermal method was performed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) antibiotic degradation and H₂ production. The results from experimental and DFT simulation studies validate the synergistic effects of co-dopants and N-vacancies, i.e., bandgap lowering, electron-hole pairs separation, and high solar energy utilization. The substitution of sp² N atom by O and S co-dopants causes strong delocalization of HOMO-LUMO distribution, enhancing carrier mobility, increasing reactive sites, and facilitating charge-carrier separation. Remarkably, OSGCN/PMS photocatalytic system achieved 99.4% SMX degradation efficiency and a high H₂ generation rate of 548.23 μ mol g^-1 h^-1 within 60 min and 36 h, respectively under visible light irradiations. The SMX degradation kinetics was pseudo-first-order with retained recycling efficiency up to 4 catalytic cycles. The results of EPR and chemical scavenging experiments revealed the redox action of reactive oxidative species, wherein ¹O₂ was the dominant reactive species in SMX degradation. The identification of formed intermediates and the SMX stepwise degradation pathway was investigated via LC-MS analysis and DFT studies, respectively. The results from this work anticipated deepening the understanding of PMS activation by substitutional co-doping favoring N-vacancy formation in GCN lattice for improved photocatalytic activity.

Fabrication and Characterization of Functional Biobased Membranes from Postconsumer Cotton Fabrics and Palm Waste for the Removal of Dyes

Textile industries currently face vast challenges for the active removal of colored wastewater. Indeed, sustainable, recyclable, and green approaches are still lacking to achieve this aim. Thus, the present study explored the utilization of highly functional, green, recyclable, fully bio-based, and cost-effective composite membranes from post-consumer cotton fabrics and palm waste for wastewater treatment purposes. Highly functional cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were produced from waste cotton fabrics and filter paper using an acid hydrolysis technique. The yield of nanofibers extracted from waste cotton fabrics and filter paper was 76.74 and 54.50%, respectively. The physical, chemical, and structural properties of nanofibers were studied using various advanced analytical techniques. The properties of isolated nanofibers were almost similar and comparable to those of commercial nanofibers. The surface charge densities were -94.0, -80.7, and -90.6 mV for the nanofibers of palm waste, cotton fibers, and filter paper, respectively. After membrane fabrication using vacuum and hot-pressing techniques, the characteristics of the membrane were analyzed. The results showed that the average pore size of the palm-waste membrane was 1.185 nm, while it was 1.875 nm for membrane from waste cotton fibers and filter paper. Congo red and methylene blue dyes were used as model solutions to understand the behavior of available functional groups and the surface ζ-potential of the membrane frameworks' interaction. The membrane made from palm waste had the highest dye removal efficiency, and it was 23% for Congo red and 44% for methylene blue. This study provides insights into the challenges associated with the use of postconsumer textile and agricultural waste, which can be potentially used in high-performance liquid filtration devices for a more sustainable society.

Theranostic doxorubicin encapsulated FeAu alloy@metal-organic framework nanostructures enable magnetic hyperthermia and medical imaging in oral carcinoma

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as attractive candidates in cancer theranostics due to their ability to envelop magnetic nanoparticles, resulting in reduced cytotoxicity and high porosity, enabling chemodrug encapsulation. Here, FeAu alloy nanoparticles (FeAu NPs) are synthesized and coated with MIL-100(Fe) MOFs to fabricate FeAu@MOF nanostructures. We encapsulated Doxorubicin within the nanostructures and evaluated the suitability of this platform for medical imaging and cancer theranostics. FeAu@MOF nanostructures (FeAu@MIL-100(Fe)) exhibited superparamagnetism, magnetic hyperthermia behavior and displayed DOX encapsulation and release efficiency of 69.95 % and 97.19 %, respectively, when stimulated with alternating magnetic field (AMF). In-vitro experiments showed that AMF-induced hyperthermia resulted in 90 % HSC-3 oral squamous carcinoma cell death, indicating application in cancer theranostics. Finally, in an in-vivo mouse model, FeAu@MOF nanostructures improved image contrast, reduced tumor volume by 30-fold and tumor weight by 10-fold, which translated to enhancement in cumulative survival, highlighting the prospect of this platform for oral cancer treatment.

Thermochemical Conversion of Plastic Waste into Fuels, Chemicals, and Value-Added Materials: A Critical Review and Outlooks

Plastic waste is an emerging environmental issue for our society. Critical action to tackle this problem is to upcycle plastic waste as valuable feedstock. Thermochemical conversion of plastic waste has received growing attention. Although thermochemical conversion is promising for handling mixed plastic waste, it typically occurs at high temperatures (300-800 °C). Catalysts can play a critical role in improving the energy efficiency of thermochemical conversion, promoting targeted reactions, and improving product selectivity. This Review aims to summarize the state-of-the-art of catalytic thermochemical conversions of various types of plastic waste. First, general trends and recent development of catalytic thermochemical conversions including pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal processes, and chemolysis of plastic waste into fuels, chemicals, and value-added materials were reviewed. Second, the status quo for the commercial implementation of thermochemical conversion of plastic waste was summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of catalytic thermochemical conversion of plastic waste including the design of sustainable and robust catalysts were discussed.

Interfacial nanoarchitectonics for ZIF-8 membranes with enhanced gas separation

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are potentially useful in gas separation applications. Conventional methods of MOF membrane preparation require multiple steps and high-pressure conditions. In this study, a reliable one-step interfacial synthesis method under atmospheric pressure has been developed to prepare zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membranes supported on porous α-Al₂O₃ disks. To obtain optimal ZIF-8 membranes, three reaction parameters were investigated, namely, reaction temperature, reaction time, and concentration of the organic linker (i.e., 2-methylimidazole). The growth of ZIF-8 membranes under various parameters was evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and the optimal synthesis conditions were determined (i.e., 80 °C for 12 h in 50 mM of 2-methylimidazole). The as-synthesized ZIF-8 membranes were then applied to CO₂/N₂ gas separation, which exhibited a maximum separation factor of 5.49 and CO₂ gas permeance of 0.47 × 10^-7 mol·m^-2·s^-1·Pa^-1.

MCP-1-Functionalized, Core-Shell Gold Nanorod@Iron-Based Metal-Organic Framework (MCP-1/GNR@MIL-100(Fe)) for Photothermal Therapy

The low vessel density and oxygen concentration in hypoxia are the main causes of reduced efficiency of anticancer therapeutics and can stimulate the tumor's relapse. Research showed that macrophages could cross the blood-vessel barriers and reach the hypoxic regions of tumors. Using macrophages in a drug delivery system has been a promising method for tumor targeting in recent years. In this work, we successfully modified monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and iron-based metal-organic framework (MIL-100(Fe)) on the photothermal agent, gold nanorods (GNRs) (i.e., MCP-1/GNR@MIL-100(Fe)), to increase cellular uptake and biocompatibility. The results of TEM, UV-vis, and FTIR all confirmed that we'd synthesized MCP-1/GNR@MIL-100(Fe) successfully, and the MCP-1/GNR@MIL-100(Fe) also showed good biocompatibility. A transwell migration assay illustrated that our material attracted macrophages, and the material uptake amount was increased by 1.5 times after MCP-1 functionalization. It also indicated that the macrophages have a tumor-targeting ability. In the in vivo experiment, we subcutaneously implanted U251 MG cells in nude mice as a xenograft model to demonstrate the photothermal activity of MCP-1/GNR@MIL-100(Fe). With successive NIR treatment, the tumor growth could be controlled, and the tumor volume still remained below 100 mm3 after laser treatment. MCP-1/GNR@MIL-100(Fe) combined with the laser treatment showed an excellent antitumor efficacy from the histology of tumor tissues, survival rates, and bioluminescence imaging.

High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes Prepared From Dispersions of Tetrabenzonaphthalene-Based Conjugated Microporous Polymers and Carbon Nanotubes

In this study, we prepared a series of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) through Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-couplings of a tetrabenzonaphthalene (TBN) monomer with pyrene (Py), tetraphenylethylene (TPE), and carbazole (Car) units and examined their chemical structures, thermal stabilities, morphologies, crystallinities, and porosities. TBN-TPE-CMP possessed a high surface area (1150 m2 g-1) and thermal stability (Td10 = 505 °C; char yield = 68 wt %) superior to those of TBN-Py-CMP and TBN-Car-CMP. To improve the conductivity of the TBN-CMP materials, we blended them with highly conductive single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Electrochemical measurements revealed that the TBN-Py-CMP/SWCNT nanocomposite had high capacitance (430 F g-1) at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 and outstanding capacitance retention (99.18%) over 2000 cycles; these characteristics were superior to those of the TBN-TPE-CMP/SWCNT and TBN-Car-CMP/SWCNT nanocomposites.

Recycling Polymeric Solid Wastes for Energy-Efficient Water Purification, Organic Distillation, and Oil Spill Cleanup

Conventional approaches (e.g., pyrolysis) for managing waste polymer foams typically require highly technical skills and consume large amounts of energy resources. This paper presents an ultrafacile, cost-effective, and highly efficient alternative method for recycling waste packaging and cleaning foam (e.g., polymelamine-formaldehyde foam). The designed solar absorber, a polypyrrole-coated melamine foam (PMF), features a highly porous structure, excellent mechanical strength, low thermal conductivity, and rapid water transport capacity. These exceptional properties render the PMF suitable for multiple applications, including energy-efficient solar-powered water purification, ethanol distillation, and oil absorption. In water purification, the PMF yields a solar-thermal conversion efficiency as high as 87.7%, stability that is maintained for more than 35 operation cycles, and antifouling capabilities (when purifying different water types). In solar distillation, the PMF achieves a concentration increase up to 75 vol% when distilling a 10 vol% ethanol solution. In oil absorption, the PMF offers an oil-absorption capacity of ≈70 g g^-1 with only a 7% loss in capacity after 100 absorbing-squeezing cycles. Thus, systems combining solar energy with various waste foams are highly promising as durable, renewable, and portable systems for water purification, organic distillation, and oil absorption, especially in remote regions or emergency situations.

In Search of Excellence: Convex versus Concave Noble Metal Nanostructures for Electrocatalytic Applications

Controlling the shape of noble metal nanoparticles is a challenging but important task in electrocatalysis. Apart from hollow and nanocage structures, concave noble metal nanoparticles are considered a new class of unconventional electrocatalysts that exhibit superior electrocatalytic properties as compared with those of conventional nanoparticles (including convex and flat ones). Herein, several facile and highly reproducible routes for synthesizing nanostructured concave noble metal materials reported in the literature are discussed, together with their advantages over noble metal nanoparticles with convex shapes. In addition, possible ways of optimizing the synthesis procedure and enhancing the electrocatalytic characteristics of concave metal nanoparticles are suggested. Nanostructured noble metals with concave features are found to show better catalytic activity and stability hence improve their practical applicability in electrocatalysis.

Quantum Mechanical Calculations for Biomass Valorization over Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)

Metal-organic framework (MOF) in biomass valorization is a promising technology developed in recent decades. By tailoring both the metal nodes and organic ligands, MOFs exhibit multiple functionalities, which not only extend their applicability in biomass conversion but also increase the complexity of material designs. To address this issue, quantum mechanical simulations have been used to provide mechanistic insights into the catalysis of biomass-derived molecules, which could potentially facilitate the development of novel MOF-based materials for biomass valorization. The aim of this review is to survey recent quantum mechanical simulations on biomass reactions occurring in MOF catalysts, with the emphasis on the studies of the catalytic activity of active sites and the effects of organic ligand and porous structures on the kinetics. Moreover, different model systems and computational methods used for MOF simulations are also surveyed and discussed in this review.

Highly selective and high-performance osmotic power generators in subnanochannel membranes enabled by metal-organic frameworks

The electric organs of electric eels are able to convert ionic gradients into high-efficiency electricity because their electrocytes contain numerous "subnanoscale" protein ion channels that can achieve highly selective and ultrafast ion transport. Despite increasing awareness of blue energy production through nanochannel membranes, achieving high-performance energy output remains considerably unexplored. Here, we report on a heterogeneous subnanochannel membrane, consisting of a continuous UiO-66-NH₂ metal-organic framework (MOF) and a highly ordered alumina nanochannel membrane. In the positively charged membrane, the angstrom-scale windows function as ionic filters for screening anions with different hydrated sizes. Driven by osmosis, the subnanochannel membrane can produce an exceptionally high Br^-/NO₃ ^- selectivity of ~1240, hence yielding an unprecedented power of up to 26.8 W/m² under a 100-fold KBr gradient. Achieving ultrahigh selective and ultrafast osmotic transport in ion channel-mimetic MOF-based membranes opens previously unexplored avenues toward advanced separation technologies and energy-harvesting devices.

Decoration of silver nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped nanoporous carbon derived from zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) via in situ auto-reduction

We discovered an in situ auto-reduction method to embed silver nanoparticles onto a nanoporous carbon (NC) derived from the zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8), without any requirement of the reducing agents. The detailed analysis demonstrated the formation of Ag NPs by the replacement of the metallic Zn residue in the NC with Ag ions. The synthesized Ag@NC exhibited a superior catalytic activity toward the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol.

Assessment of agricultural waste-derived activated carbon in multiple applications

To minimize waste production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, agricultural waste such as rice straw has been actively used in biochemical production. In Taiwan, cellulosic waste has been used in anaerobic digestion for bioethanol production. This process produces a large amount of biomass-associated sludge that may become a serious environmental issue. Therefore, in this study, the anaerobic digestion sludge was recycled for the production of activated carbon via pyrolysis and activation by KOH. Surface characterization showed increased surface area and development of microporous structure upon activation. The FTIR image showed that high temperature activation eliminated most functional groups in the activated carbon, except for CO and C-O groups. The results showed that the activated carbon could be used for pollutant adsorbents such as molecular dyes (methylene blue: 217 mg g^-1) and metal ions (copper: 169 mg g^-1) from aqueous solution. In addition, the as-synthesized activated carbon can be used for CO₂ capture and capacitor. Instead of focusing on one single application, we proposed that centralized production of activated carbon could be used in various applications, while further modification could be adopted depending on the need of its specific application.

De Novo synthesis of platinum-nanoparticle-encapsulated UiO-66-NH2 for photocatalytic thin film fabrication with enhanced performance of phenol degradation

The structural and chemical stability of UiO-66-NH₂ and its simulated solar irradiation responsive characteristic make it a suitable metal-organic framework (MOF) candidate as photocatalytic material. Platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) are typically immobilized in MOF to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. However, introducing high metal content in MOF with high dispersion is still challenging using conventional methods. In this paper, we present de novo synthesis of Pt@UiO-66-NH₂, which can reach a highest metal content of 16 wt% with an average nanoparticle size of around 2 nm as confirmed by ICP-MS analysis and TEM images. The presence of benzoic acid plays multiple important roles in Pt@UiO-66-NH₂ formation, including binding formation with Zr clusters, facilitating Pt dispersion, and being a modulator in MOF construction. In addition, the Pt@UiO-66-NH₂ is fabricated on the α-Al₂O₃ substrate as a photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) for phenol degradation, which shows over 70 % removal efficiency under light irradiation and H₂O₂ addition. The recycle test shows that the PMR can maintain high catalytic efficiency. The facile de novo synthesis method proposed in this study enables effective immobilization of high metal content in MOF, and construction of membrane-based photocatalyst for scale-up application.

Nanoarchitectured Structure and Surface Biofunctionality of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), one of the important porous materials, have garnered interest owing to their highly attractive physicochemical features and advantageous morphological attributes. They are of particular importance for use in diverse fields including, but not limited to, adsorption, catalysis, and medicine. Despite their intrinsic stable siliceous frameworks, excellent mechanical strength, and optimal morphological attributes, pristine MSNs suffer from poor drug loading efficiency, as well as compatibility and degradability issues for therapeutic, diagnostic, and tissue engineering purposes. Collectively, the desirable and beneficial properties of MSNs have been harnessed by modifying the surface of the siliceous frameworks through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species, and through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species and their conjugates. Substantial advancements of these innovative colloidal inorganic nanocontainers drive researchers in promoting them toward innovative applications like stimuli (light/ultrasound/magnetic)-responsive delivery-associated therapies with exceptional performance in vivo. Here, a brief overview of the fabrication of siliceous frameworks, along with discussions on the significant advances in engineering of MSNs, is provided. The scope of the advancement in terms of structural and physicochemical attributes and their effects on biomedical applications with a particular focus on recent studies is emphasized. Finally, interesting perspectives are recapitulated, along with the scope toward clinical translation.

Advances in lignin valorization towards bio-based chemicals and fuels: Lignin biorefinery

Lignin is one of the most promising renewable sources for aromatic hydrocarbons, while effective depolymerization towards its constituent monomers is a particular challenge because of the structural complexity and stability. Intensive research efforts have been directed towards exploiting effective valorization of lignin for the production of bio-based platform chemicals and fuels. The present contribution aims to provide a critical review of key advances in the identification of exact lignin structure subjected to various fractionation technologies and demonstrate the key roles of lignin structures in depolymerization for unique functionalized products. Various technologies (e.g., thermocatalytic approaches, photocatalytic conversion, and mechanochemical depolymerization) are reviewed and evaluated in terms of feasibility and potential for further upgrading. Overall, advances in pristine lignin structure analysis and conversion technologies can facilitate recovery and subsequent utilization of lignin towards tailored commodity chemicals and fungible fuels.

Development of Sulfonic-Acid-Functionalized Mesoporous Materials: Synthesis and Catalytic Applications

Sulfonic acid based mesostructures (SAMs) have been developed in recent years and have important catalytic applications. The primary applications of these materials are in various organic synthesis reactions, such as multicomponent reactions, carbon-carbon bond couplings, protection reactions, and Fries and Beckman rearrangements. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent developments in the field of SAMs with a particular emphasis on the reaction scope and advantages of heterogeneous solid acid catalysts.

High performance capacitive deionization using modified ZIF-8-derived, N-doped porous carbon with improved conductivity

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) composite-derived carbon exhibiting large surface area and high micropore volume is demonstrated to be a promising electrode material for the capacitive deionization (CDI) application. However, some inherent serious issues (e.g., low electrical conductivity, narrow pore size, relatively low pore volume, etc.) are still observed for nitrogen-doped porous carbon particles, which restrict their CDI performance. To solve the above-mentioned problems, herein, we prepared gold-nanoparticle-embedded ZIF-8-derived nitrogen-doped carbon calcined at 800 °C (Au@NC800) and PEDOT doped-NC-800 (NC800-PEDOT). The newly generated NC800-PEDOT and Au@NC800 electrodes exhibited notably increased conductivity, and they also achieved high electrosorption capacities of 16.18 mg g-1 and 14.31 mg g-1, respectively, which were much higher than that of NC800 (8.36 mg g-1). Au@NC800 and NC800-PEDOT can be promisingly applicable as highly efficient CDI electrode materials.

Curved Fragmented Graphenic Hierarchical Architectures for Extraordinary Charging Capacities

An approach to assemble hierarchically ordered 3D arrangements of curved graphenic nanofragments for energy storage devices is described. Assembling them into well-defined interconnected macroporous networks, followed by removal of the template, results in spherical macroporous, mesoporous, and microporous carbon microball (3MCM) architectures with controllable features spanning nanometer to micrometer length scales. These structures are ideal porous electrodes and can serve as lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes as well as capacitive deionization (CDI) devices. The LIBs exhibit high reversible capacity (up to 1335 mAh g^-1 ), with great rate capability (248 mAh g^-1 at 20 C) and a long cycle life (60 cycles). For CDI, the curved graphenic networks have superior electrosorption capacity (i.e., 5.17 mg g^-1 in 0.5 × 10^-3 m NaCl) over conventional carbon materials. The performance of these materials is attributed to the hierarchical structure of the graphenic electrode, which enables faster ion diffusion and low transport resistance.

A Novel Method for the Pentosan Analysis Present in Jute Biomass and Its Conversion into Sugar Monomers Using Acidic Ionic Liquid

Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) are used for biomass valorization into valuable chemicals because of their remarkable properties such as thermal stability, lower vapor pressure, non-flammability, higher heat capacity, and tunable solubility and acidity. Here, we demonstrate a method for the synthesis of C5 sugars (xylose and arabinose) from the pentosan present in jute biomass in a one-pot process by utilizing a catalytic amount of Brønsted acidic 1-methyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate IL. The acidic IL is synthesized in the lab and characterized using NMR spectroscopic techniques for understanding its purity. The various properties of BAIL are measured such as acid strength, thermal and hydrothermal stability, which showed that the catalyst is stable at a higher temperature (250 °C) and possesses very high acid strength (Ho 1.57). The acidic IL converts over 90% of pentosan into sugars and furfural. Hence, the presenting method in this study can also be employed for the evaluation of pentosan concentration in other kinds of lignocellulosic biomass.

Highly Zeolite-Loaded Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Membranes for Alkaline Fuel-Cell Electrolytes

Having a secure and stable energy supply is a top priority for the global community. Fuel-cell technology is recognized as a promising electrical energy generation system for the twenty-first century. Polyvinyl alcohol/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (PVA/ZIF-8) composite membranes were successfully prepared in this work from direct ZIF-8 suspension solution (0⁻45.4 wt %) and PVA mixing to prevent filler aggregation for direct methanol alkaline fuel cells (DMAFCs). The ZIF-8 fillers were chosen for the appropriate cavity size as a screening aid to allow water and suppress methanol transport. Increased ionic conductivities and suppressed methanol permeabilities were achieved for the PVA/40.5% ZIF-8 composites, compared to other samples. A high power density of 173.2 mW cm-2 was achieved using a KOH-doped PVA/40.5% ZIF-8 membrane in a DMAFC at 60 °C with 1⁻2 mg cm-2 catalyst loads. As the filler content was raised beyond 45.4 wt %, adverse effects resulted and the DMAFC performance (144.9 mW cm-2) was not improved further. Therefore, the optimal ZIF-8 content was approximately 40.5 wt % in the polymeric matrix. The specific power output was higher (58 mW mg-1) than most membranes reported in the literature (3⁻18 mW mg-1).

Mesoporous TiO2 Embedded with a Uniform Distribution of CuO Exhibit Enhanced Charge Separation and Photocatalytic Efficiency

Mixed metal oxide nanoparticles have interesting physical and chemical properties, but synthesizing them with colloidal methods is still challenging and often results in very heterogeneous structures. Here, we describe a simple method to synthesize mesoporous titania nanoparticles implanted with a uniform distribution of copper oxide nanocrystals (CuO@MTs). By calcining a titanium-based metal-organic framework (MIL-125) in the presence of Cu ions, we can trap the Cu in the TiO₂ matrix. Removal of the organic ligand creates mesoporosity and limits phase separation so that tiny CuO nanocrystals form in the interstices of the TiO₂. The CuO@MTs exhibits superior performance for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (4760 μmol h^-1) that is >90 times larger than pristine titania.

Synthesis of MOF-525 Derived Nanoporous Carbons with Different Particle Sizes for Supercapacitor Application

Nanoporous carbon (NC) materials have attracted great research interest for supercapacitor applications, because of their excellent electrochemical and mechanical stability, good electrical conductivity, and high surface area. Although there are many reports on metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials, previous synthetic studies have been hindered by imperfect control of particle sizes and shapes. Here, we show precise control of the particle sizes of MOF-525 from 100 nm to 750 nm. After conversion of MOF-525 to NC, the effects of variation of the particle size on the electrochemical performance have been carefully investigated. The results demonstrate that our NC is a potential candidate for practical supercapacitor applications.

Strategies for Improving the Functionality of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks: Tailoring Nanoarchitectures for Functional Applications

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) built with tetrahedral metal ions and imidazolates, offer permanent porosity and high thermal and chemical stabilities. While ZIFs possess some attractive physical and chemical properties, it remains important to enhance their functionality for practical application. Here, an overview of the extensive strategies which have been developed to improve the functionality of ZIFs is provided, including linker modifications, functional hybridization of ZIFs via the encapsulation of guest species (such as metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and biomolecules) into ZIFs, and hybridization with polymeric matrices to form mixed matrix membranes for industrial gas and liquid separations. Furthermore, the developed strategies for achieving size and shape control of ZIF nanocrystals are considered, which are important for optimizing the textural characteristics as well as the functional performance of ZIFs and their derived materials/hybrids. Moreover, the recent trends of using ZIFs as templates for the derivation of nanoporous hybrid materials, including carbon/metal, carbon/oxide, carbon/sulfide, and carbon/phosphide hybrids, are discussed. Finally, some perspectives on the potential future research directions and applications for ZIFs and ZIF-derived materials are offered.

Trifunctional Fe3O4/CaP/Alginate Core-Shell-Corona Nanoparticles for Magnetically Guided, pH-Responsive, and Chemically Targeted Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy of bladder cancer has limited efficacy because of the short retention time of drugs in the bladder during therapy. In this research, nanoparticles (NPs) with a new core/shell/corona nanostructure have been synthesized, consisting of iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) as the core to providing magnetic properties, drug (doxorubicin) loaded calcium phosphate (CaP) as the shell for pH-responsive release, and arginylglycylaspartic acid (RGD)-containing peptide functionalized alginate as the corona for cell targeting (with the composite denoted as RGD-Fe₃O₄/CaP/Alg NPs). We have optimized the reaction conditions to obtain RGD-Fe₃O₄/CaP/Alg NPs with high biocompatibility and suitable particle size, surface functionality, and drug loading/release behavior. The results indicate that the RGD-Fe₃O₄/CaP/Alg NPs exhibit enhanced chemotherapy efficacy toward T24 bladder cancer cells, owing to successful magnetic guidance, pH-responsive release, and improved cellular uptake, which give these NPs great potential as therapeutic agents for future in vivo drug delivery systems.

Shielding against Unfolding by Embedding Enzymes in Metal-Organic Frameworks via a de Novo Approach

We show that an enzyme maintains its biological function under a wider range of conditions after being embedded in metal-organic framework (MOF) microcrystals via a de novo approach. This enhanced stability arises from confinement of the enzyme molecules in the mesoporous cavities in the MOFs, which reduces the structural mobility of enzyme molecules. We embedded catalase (CAT) into zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-90 and ZIF-8), and then exposed both embedded CAT and free CAT to a denature reagent (i.e., urea) and high temperatures (i.e., 80 °C). The embedded CAT maintains its biological function in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide even when exposed to 6 M urea and 80 °C, with apparent rate constants k_obs (s^-1) of 1.30 × 10^-3 and 1.05 × 10^-3, respectively, while free CAT shows undetectable activity. A fluorescence spectroscopy study shows that the structural conformation of the embedded CAT changes less under these denaturing conditions than free CAT.

Nanoarchitectured Design of Porous Materials and Nanocomposites from Metal-Organic Frameworks

The emergence of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a new class of crystalline porous materials is attracting considerable attention in many fields such as catalysis, energy storage and conversion, sensors, and environmental remediation due to their controllable composition, structure and pore size. MOFs are versatile precursors for the preparation of various forms of nanomaterials as well as new multifunctional nanocomposites/hybrids, which exhibit superior functional properties compared to the individual components assembling the composites. This review provides an overview of recent developments achieved in the fabrication of porous MOF-derived nanostructures including carbons, metal oxides, metal chalcogenides (metal sulfides and selenides), metal carbides, metal phosphides and their composites. Finally, the challenges and future trends and prospects associated with the development of MOF-derived nanomaterials are also examined.

Boron-Functionalized Graphene Oxide-Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient CO2 Capture

The capture and storage of CO₂ have been suggested as an effective strategy to reduce the global emissions of greenhouse gases. Hence, in recent years, many studies have been carried out to develop highly efficient materials for capturing CO₂ . Until today, different types of porous materials, such as zeolites, porous carbons, N/B-doped porous carbons or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have been studied for CO₂ capture. Herein, the CO₂ capture performance of new hybrid materials, graphene-organic frameworks (GOFs) is described. The GOFs were synthesized under mild conditions through a solvothermal process using graphene oxide (GO) as a starting material and benzene 1,4-diboronic acid as an organic linker. Interestingly, the obtained GOF shows a high surface area (506 m²  g^-1 ) which is around 11 times higher than that of GO (46 m²  g^-1 ), indicating that the organic modification on the GO surface is an effective way of preparing a porous structure using GO. Our synthetic approach is quite simple, facile, and fast, compared with many other approaches reported previously. The synthesized GOF exhibits a very large CO₂ capacity of 4.95 mmol g^-1 at 298 K (1 bar), which is higher those of other porous materials or carbon-based materials, along with an excellent CO₂ /N₂ selectivity of 48.8.

Synthesis and Cytotoxicity of Dendritic Platinum Nanoparticles with HEK-293 Cells

Dendritic platinum nanoparticles (DPNs) have been synthesized from l-ascorbic acid and an amphiphilic non-ionic surfactant (Brij-58) via a sonochemical method. The particle size and shape of the DPNs could be tuned by changing the reduction temperature, resulting in a uniform DPN with a size of 23 nm or 60 nm. The facets of DPNs have been studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The cytotoxicity of DPNs has been investigated using human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293), and the biological adaptability exhibited by DPNs has opened a pathway to biomedical applications such as drug-delivery systems, photothermal treatment, and biosensors.

Multimodal Superparamagnetic Nanoparticles with Unusually Enhanced Specific Absorption Rate for Synergetic Cancer Therapeutics and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPMNPs) used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) cancer therapy frequently face trade off between a high magnetization saturation and their good colloidal stability, high specific absorption rate (SAR), and most importantly biological compatibility. This necessitates the development of new nanomaterials, as MFH and MRI are considered to be one of the most promising combined noninvasive treatments. In the present study, we investigated polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSMO) SPMNPs for efficient cancer hyperthermia therapy and MRI application. The superparamagnetic nanomaterial revealed excellent colloidal stability and biocompatibility. A high SAR of 390 W/g was observed due to higher colloidal stability leading to an increased Brownian and Neel's spin relaxation. Cell viability of PEG capped nanoparticles is up to 80% on different cell lines tested rigorously using different methods. PEG coating provided excellent hemocompatibility to human red blood cells as PEG functionalized SPMNPs reduced hemolysis efficiently compared to its uncoated counterpart. Magnetic fluid hyperthermia of SPMNPs resulted in cancer cell death up to 80%. Additionally, improved MRI characteristics were also observed for the PEG capped La1-xSrxMnO3 formulation in aqueous medium compared to the bare LSMO. Taken together, PEG capped SPMNPs can be useful for diagnosis, efficient magnetic fluid hyperthermia, and multimodal cancer treatment as the amphiphilicity of PEG can easily be utilized to encapsulate hydrophobic drugs.

Reduced graphene oxide nanosheets decorated with Au-Pd bimetallic alloy nanoparticles towards efficient photocatalytic degradation of phenolic compounds in water

Reduced graphene oxide nanosheets decorated with Au-Pd bimetallic alloy nanoparticles are successfully prepared via a chemical approach consisting of reducing the metal precursors using ascorbic acid as reductant at an elevated temperature. The prepared nanocomposite is employed as a photocatalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants such as phenol, 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), and 2-nitrophenol (2-NP). The complete degradation of phenol is achieved after 300 min under natural sunlight irradiation whereas the degradation of 2-CP and 2-NP is completed after 180 min. The activity of the photocatalyst is evaluated considering several parameters such as the initial phenol concentration, the photocatalyst loading, and the pH of the solution. The degradation kinetics of all the compounds is carefully studied and found to follow a linear Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. Furthermore, the reusability of the photocatalyst is successfully achieved up to five cycles and the catalyst exhibits an excellent stability.

Nanoarchitectures for Mesoporous Metals

The field of mesoporous metal nanoarchitectonics offers several advantages which cannot be found elsewhere. These materials have been showcasing impressive enhancements of their electrochemical properties for further implementation, compared to their micro- and macroporous counterparts. Since the last few decades, various methods have been developed to achieve narrow pore size distribution with a tunable porosity and particle morphology. While hard templates offer a reliable and intuitive approach to synthesize mesoporous metals, the complexity of the technique and the use of harmful chemicals pushed several research groups to focus in other directions. For example, soft templates (e.g., lyotropic crystals, micelles assemblies) and solution phase methods (requiring to control reduction reactions) offer more and more possibilities in terms of available compositions and morphologies. Indeed, various metal (Pt, Pd, Au, Ru, etc.) can now be synthesized as dendritic, core@shell, hollow or polyhedral nanoparticles, with single- or multicomponents, alloyed or not, with unprecedented electrochemical activity.

Functionalized magnetic iron oxide/alginate core-shell nanoparticles for targeting hyperthermia

Hyperthermia is one of the promising treatments for cancer therapy. However, the development of a magnetic fluid agent that can selectively target a tumor and efficiently elevate temperature while exhibiting excellent biocompatibility still remains challenging. Here a new core-shell nanostructure consisting of inorganic iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles as the core, organic alginate as the shell, and cell-targeting ligands (ie, D-galactosamine) decorated on the outer surface (denoted as Fe₃O₄@Alg-GA nanoparticles) was prepared using a combination of a pre-gel method and coprecipitation in aqueous solution. After treatment with an AC magnetic field, the results indicate that Fe₃O₄@Alg-GA nanoparticles had excellent hyperthermic efficacy in a human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2) owing to enhanced cellular uptake, and show great potential as therapeutic agents for future in vivo drug delivery systems.

Functionalized Fe3O4@silica core-shell nanoparticles as microalgae harvester and catalyst for biodiesel production

Core-shell Fe3O4@silica magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with a strong base, triazabicyclodecene (TBD), were successfully synthesized for harvesting microalgae and for one-pot microalgae-to-fatty acid methyl ester (FAME, or so-called biodiesel) conversion. Three types of algae oil sources (i.e., dried algae, algae oil, and algae concentrate) were used and the reaction conditions were optimized to achieve the maximum biodiesel yield. The results obtained in this study show that our TBD-functionalized Fe3O4@silica nanoparticles could effectively convert algae oil to biodiesel with a maximum yield of 97.1 %. Additionally, TBD-Fe3O4@silica nanoparticles act as an efficient algae harvester because of their adsorption and magnetic properties. The method presented in this study demonstrates the wide scope for the use of covalently functionalized core-shell nanoparticles for the production of liquid transportation fuels from algal biomass.

Integrated, cascading enzyme-/chemocatalytic cellulose conversion using catalysts based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles

This article reports a novel approach to deconstructing cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with a high yield (46.1%) by integrating a sequential enzyme cascade technique in an aqueous system with solid acid catalysis in an organic-solvent system. We executed the rational design and synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with various pore sizes and surface functionalities, which proved to be useful for the immobilization of various enzymes (i.e., cellulase and isomerase) and nanoparticles (i.e., magnetic Fe3 O4 ) and for functionalization of various acid groups (i.e., H2 PO3 , COOH, and SO3 H). We separately applied the synthesized biocatalysts (i.e., cellulase-Fe3 O4 @MSN and isomerase-Fe3 O4 @MSN) and chemical catalysts (i.e., HSO3 -MSN) in a sequential cellulose-to-glucose, glucose-to-fructose, and fructose-to-HMF conversion, respectively, across both aqueous- and organic-solvent systems after the optimization of reaction conditions (e.g., reaction temperature, water ratio, catalyst amount). The integrated enzymatic and chemocatalytic concept in this study could be an effective and economically friendly process for various catalytic applications.

Platinum-free counter electrode comprised of metal-organic-framework (MOF)-derived cobalt sulfide nanoparticles for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs)

We fabricated a highly efficient (with a solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency (η) of 8.1%) Pt-free dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The counter electrode was made of cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanoparticles synthesized via surfactant-assisted preparation of a metal organic framework, ZIF-67, with controllable particle sizes (50 to 320 nm) and subsequent oxidation and sulfide conversion. In contrast to conventional Pt counter electrodes, the synthesized CoS nanoparticles exhibited higher external surface areas and roughness factors, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) element mapping, and electrochemical analysis. Incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) results showed an increase in the open circuit voltage (V_OC) and a decrease in the short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) for CoS-based DSSCs compared to Pt-based DSSCs, resulting in a similar power conversion efficiency. The CoS-based DSSC fabricated in the study show great potential for economically friendly production of Pt-free DSSCs.

Liver cancer cells: targeting and prolonged-release drug carriers consisting of mesoporous silica nanoparticles and alginate microspheres

A new microsphere consisting of inorganic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and organic alginate (denoted as MSN@Alg) was successfully synthesized by air-dynamic atomization and applied to the intracellular drug delivery systems (DDS) of liver cancer cells with sustained release and specific targeting properties. MSN@Alg microspheres have the advantages of MSN and alginate, where MSN provides a large surface area for high drug loading and alginate provides excellent biocompatibility and COOH functionality for specific targeting. Rhodamine 6G was used as a model drug, and the sustained release behavior of the rhodamine 6G-loaded MSN@Alg microspheres can be prolonged up to 20 days. For targeting therapy, the anticancer drug doxorubicin was loaded into MSN@Alg microspheres, and the (lysine)4-tyrosine-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (K₄YRGD) peptide was functionalized onto the surface of MSN@Alg for targeting liver cancer cells, hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2). The results of the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy indicate that the MSN@Alg microspheres were successfully uptaken by HepG2 without apparent cytotoxicity. In addition, the intracellular drug delivery efficiency was greatly enhanced (ie, 3.5-fold) for the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD)-labeled, doxorubicin-loaded MSN@Alg drug delivery system compared with the non-RGD case. The synthesized MSN@Alg microspheres show great potential as drug vehicles with high biocompatibility, sustained release, and targeting features for future intracellular DDS.
