Abstract
A series of giant tris(heteroaryl)methanes are easily assembled by one-pot three-component synthesis by simple reflux in ethanol without catalyst or additives. Diversely substituted indoles (Ar1) react with quinoline aldehydes, quinolone aldehydes, chromone aldehydes, and fluorene aldehydes (Ar2CHO) and coumarins (Ar3) in 1:1:1 ratio to form the corresponding tris(heteroaryl)methanes (Ar1Ar2Ar3)CH along with (Ar1Ar1Ar2)CH triads. A series of new 2:1 triads were also synthesized by coupling substituted indoles with Ar2CHO. The coupling reactions could also be carried out in water (at circa 80 °C) but with chemoselectivity favoring (Ar1Ar1Ar2)CH over (Ar1Ar2Ar3)CH. The molecular structure of a representative (Ar1Ar2Ar3)CH triad was confirmed by X-ray analysis. Model tris(heteroaryl/aryl)methylium salts were generated by reaction with DDQ/HPF6 and studied by NMR and by DFT and GIAO-DFT.

Abstract
The enantioselective conjugate addition of 2-naphthols to ortho-hydroxyphenyl substituted para-quinone methides has been achieved with the aid of a chiral phosphoric acid. Importantly, the reaction took place with excellent chemo- and regioselectivities. In addition, the protocol features a low catalyst loading, mild reaction conditions, and enables the formation of unsymmetrical triarylmethanes in good to high yields with generally high enantioselectivities. The enantioselective conjugate addition of 2-naphthols to ortho-hydroxyphenyl substituted para-quinone methides has been achieved with the aid of a chiral phosphoric acid.![]()

Abstract
Two pairs of enantiomers, (-) and (+)-securidanes A (1 and 2) and B (3 and 4) featuring unprecedented triarylmethane (TAM) skeletons, were isolated from Securidaca inappendiculata. Their structures were established by spectroscopic data, X-ray crystallography, and CD analysis. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for 1-4 based on the co-isolated precursors was proposed. Bioinspired total synthesis of 1-4 was completed in high yield, which in turn corroborated the biosynthetic hypothesis. Compounds 1-4 showed good inhibition against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). The molecular docking demonstrated that the strongest inhibitor 3 (IC50 = 7.52 μM) reaches deeper into the binding pocket and has an additional H-bond.

Abstract
A highly efficient silver-catalyzed dibenzylation of acetanilides by employing the benzhydrol derivatives as the coupling partners to yield triphenylmethane derivatives has been developed. Various functional groups were tolerated, leading to the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. Preliminary experimental results indicated that the silver ions activate the arene rings and the strong acid TfOH provides the carbocations.

Abstract
The direct enantioselective 1,4- and 1,8-arylations of 7-methide-7H-indoles and 6-methide-6H-indoles, respectively, generated in situ from diarylmethanols, with electron-rich arenes as nucleophiles, has been achieved in the presence of chiral phosphoric acids (CPAs). These two remote activation protocols provide an efficient approach for the construction of diverse hetero-triarylmethanes in high yields (up to 97 %) and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 96 %). Mechanistically inspired experiments tentatively indicate that the catalytic enantioselective 1,4-addition as well as the formal SN 1 substitution could proceed efficiently in the similar catalytic systems. Furthermore, the modification of the catalytic system and diarylmethanol structure successfully deviates the reactivity toward a remote, highly enantioselective 1,8-arylation reaction. This flexible activation mode and novel reactivity of diarylmethanols expand the synthetic potential of chiral phosphoric acids.

Abstract
An efficient, catalyst-free strategy to construct diarylmethyl sulfones via 1,6-conjugate addition/aromatization/sulfonylation reaction of para-quinone methides with sulfonyl hydrazides under mild and environmentally benign conditions has been developed. The established protocol provided a highly chemo- and regioselectivity synthesis of a diverse array of novel diarylmethyl sulfones with excellent yields, and the reaction could be scaled up.

Abstract
An unusual strategy toward novel substituted benzo[b]thiophenes has been developed. The generation of arynes in the presence of acyl ketene dithioacetals resulted in a cascade reaction involving [3 + 2] cycloaddition, and a dealkylative arylation of a thioether moiety to afford 2,3-disubstuted benzo[b]thiophenes. This route represents an expeditious approach to benzothiophenes that employs acyl ketene dithioacetals as dipoles.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of 1,1-diarylalkanes via the Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation reaction of electron-rich arenes with cinnamic acid ester derivatives or chalcones is reported. Iron triflate has been found to be the best catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation reaction with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. This reaction afforded β,β-diaryl carbonyl compounds in good yields (65-93%) and with excellent regioselectivities. Remarkably, this method is also compatible with a variety of indoles to provide 3-indolyl-aryl carbonyl compounds in excellent yields. Great efforts have been made to deduce a plausible reaction mechanism based on isotopic labelling experiments.

Abstract
We present herein an unprecedented, efficient and enantioselective synthesis of triarylmethanes and 1,1-diarylalkanes through N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed acylative desymmetrization of bisphenols. This method utilizes readily available substrates, reagents and a simple procedure to deliver the valuable products in excellent enantiopurity. DFT calculations reveal that the selectivity is governed by the C-C bond cleavage step of the tetrahedral intermediate leading to the ester product. A transition state model featuring a combination of intramolecular hydrogen bond and steric effect is developed to explain the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
The physicochemical properties of cationic dioxa (1), azaoxa (2), and diaza (3) [6]helicenes demonstrate a much higher chemical stability of the diaza adduct 3 (pKR+ =20.4, Ered1/2 =-0.72 V) compared to its azaoxa 2 (pKR+ =15.2, Ered1/2 =-0.45 V) and dioxa 1 (pKR+ =8.8, Ered1/2 =-0.12 V) analogues. The fluorescence of these cationic chromophores is established, and ranges from the orange to the far-red regions. From 1 to 3, a bathochromic shift of the lowest energy transitions (up to 614 nm in acetonitrile) and an enhancement of the fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes (up to 31 % and 9.8 ns, respectively, at 658 nm) are observed. The triplet quantum yields and circularly polarized luminescence are also reported. Finally, fine tuning of the optical properties of the diaza [6]helicene core is achieved through selective and orthogonal post-functionalization reactions (12 examples, compounds 4-15). The electronic absorption is modulated from the orange to the far-red spectral range (560-731 nm), and fluorescence is observed from 591 to 755 nm with enhanced quantum efficiency up to 70 % (619 nm). The influence of the peripheral auxochrome substituents is rationalized by first-principles calculations.

Abstract
A facile and modular synthesis of triarylmethanes was achieved in good yield via a two-step sequence in which the final step is the copper(II)-catalyzed arylation of diarylmethanols with arylboronic acids. By using this protocol a variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical triarylmethanes were synthesized. As an application of the newly developed methodology, we demonstrate a high-yielding synthesis of the triarylmethane intermediate towards an anti-breast-cancer drug candidate.
