Removal of pesticides from water and wastewater by different adsorbents: a review

In this review article, the use of various low-cost adsorbents for the removal of pesticides from water and wastewater has been reviewed. Pesticides may appear as pollutants in water sources, having undesirable impacts to human health because of their toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity or causing aesthetic problems such as taste and odors. These pesticides pollute the water stream and it can be removed very effectively using different low-cost adsorbents. It is evident from a literature survey of about 191 recently published papers that low-cost adsorbents have demonstrated outstanding removal capabilities for pesticides.

Using shell-tunable mesoporous Fe3O4@HMS and magnetic separation to remove DDT from aqueous media

1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethane (DDT) is of concern in water treatment because of its persistence and health effects. A new concept is proposed to synthesize hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) with magnetic functionalization for DDT removal from aqueous media. Fe(3)O(4) nanocrystals were synthesized by a low-temperature solvothermal process, and then encapsulated in mesoporous silica through a packing approach, forming core-shell structured Fe(3)O(4)@HMS microspheres. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques. The results indicate that the silica shell conserves mesoporous structure after the removal of surfactant templates. Different from previous studies, the thickness, pore volume and surface area of silica shell can be controlled by adjusting the reaction condition. These Fe(3)O(4)@HMS materials show high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate for DDT. Because of the useful magnetic property and unique mesoporous structure, the synthesized materials provide a fast, convenient and highly efficient means to remove DDT from aqueous media.

Atrazine removal from water by polycation-clay composites: effect of dissolved organic matter and comparison to activated carbon

Atrazine removal from water by two polycations pre-adsorbed on montmorillonite was studied. Batch experiments demonstrated that the most suitable composite poly (4-vinylpyridine-co-styrene)-montmorillonite (PVP-co-S90%-mont.) removed 90-99% of atrazine (0.5-28 ppm) within 20-40 min at 0.367% w/w. Calculations employing Langmuir's equation could simulate and predict the kinetics and final extents of atrazine adsorption. Column filter experiments (columns 20x1.6 cm) which included 2g of the PVP-co-S90%-mont. composite mixed with excess sand removed 93-96% of atrazine (800 ppb) for the first 800 pore volumes, whereas the same amount of granular activated carbon (GAC) removed 83-75%. In the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM; 3.7 ppm) the efficiency of the GAC filter to remove atrazine decreased significantly (68-52% removal), whereas the corresponding efficiency of the PVP-co-S90%-mont. filter was only slightly influenced by DOM. At lower atrazine concentration (7 ppb) the PVP-co-S90%-mont. filter reduced even after 3000 pore volumes the emerging atrazine concentration below 3 ppb (USEPA standard). In the case of the GAC filter the emerging atrazine concentration was between 2.4 and 5.3 microg/L even for the first 100 pore volumes. Thus, the PVP-co-S90%-mont. composite is a new efficient material for the removal of atrazine from water.

Clinoptilolite in study of lindane and aldrin sorption processes from water solution

The scope of this study was adsorption of lindane and aldrin from water solution onto clinoptilolite rock with the following desorption using n-hexane. Both kinetic and equilibrium tests were conducted. During kinetic experiment the most part of aldrin and a half part of lindane were sorbed during the first hours. The sorption equilibria with removal of 95% of aldrin amount and about 68% of lindane amount have been set in for 48 h. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model gives somewhat better fit to the both pesticides' sorption data that may testify to the complicated and heterogeneous nature of interaction between active zeolite surface and the pesticides polar-dipole centers. OH(-)-groups and the coordinated exchangeable cations are probably the main active positions for the pesticide sorption on the clinoptilolite surface. Equilibrium experiment results show that adsorption isotherms for the low concentrations of lindane and aldrin (10-200 and 3-100 microg/L, respectively) fit well to the Freundlich and the Liner models. Only 10% of lindane sorbed and about 60% of aldrin sorbed were desorbed from the clinoptilolite using n-hexane under static conditions.

Adsorption of nitrobenzene from aqueous solution by MCM-41

Adsorption of nitrobenzene onto mesoporous molecular sieves (MCM-41) from aqueous solution has been investigated systematically using batch experiments in this study. Results indicate that nitrobenzene adsorption is initially rapid and the adsorption process reaches a steady state after 1 min. The adsorption isotherms are well described by the Langmuir and the Freundlich models, the former being found to provide the better fit with the experimental data. The effects of temperature, pH, ionic strength, humic acid, and the presence of solvent on adsorption processes are also examined. According to the experimental results, the amount of nitrobenzene adsorbed decreases with an increase of temperature from 278 to 308 K, pH from 1.0 to 11.0, and ionic strength from 0.001 to 0.1 mol/L. However, the amount of nitrobenzene adsorbed onto MCM-41 does not show notable difference in the presence of humic acid. The presence of organic solvent results in a decrease in nitrobenzene adsorption. The desorption process shows a reversibility of nitrobenzene adsorption onto MCM-41. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy are calculated from the experimental data at different temperatures. Based on the results, it suggests that the adsorption is primarily brought about by hydrophobic interaction between nitrobenzene and MCM-41 surface.

Sorption of atrazine on conventional and surface modified activated carbons

The sorption of atrazine from water has been studied using a conventional activated carbon, F400, an annealed carbon sample, F400AN, and an aminated carbon sample, F400NH(2). Characterisation of the carbon samples showed that sample F400NH(2) had the highest proportion of micropores, but had the lowest values of point of zero charge (PZC) and iso-electric point (IEP). This was attributed to the existence of a high proportion of oxygen containing functional groups. Sorption data showed that sample F400AN was superior in the sorption of atrazine to samples F400 and F400NH(2). It was noted that pore size distribution alone was not the only contributing factor for the uptake of atrazine onto the activated carbons. The sorption data were fitted well using the Freundlich isotherm. The free energy change showed that sorption of atrazine on activated carbons is a spontaneous process. A pseudo-second order kinetic model was used for analysing the kinetic data, and it was concluded that adsorption of atrazine was controlled by a film diffusion mechanism.
